Door County begins in the quiet. In the hush of a summer morning, as fog drifts over Lake Michigan and the first light filters through dense forests of maple, birch, and pine, the peninsula feels still. It’s waiting, for just one moment, to be discovered.
But it’s so much more than just lakeside serenity; this slice of Wisconsin is defined by the land itself. Jutting between the azure waters of Green Bay and Lake Michigan, the Door Peninsula offers a rare concentration of protected shoreline, forests, and open space, with more than 30,000 acres preserved for exploration and adventure.
Here, the landscape isn’t just a scenic backdrop; it’s an invitation. Limestone bluffs climb from the water, groves of trees tower over hidden coves, and quiet trails lead to some of the Midwest’s most memorable views. From the iconic overlooks of Peninsula State Park to the wave-carved cliffs of Cave Point County
Park, the outdoors is always within reach. Each season reshapes the experience of nature. In summer, bike trails wind beneath a verdant canopy, and long days are spent out on the water. Fall sets the peninsula ablaze in color, drawing visitors to its kaleidoscopic fold. Winter transforms, quieting the terrain into a place for snowshoeing, Nordic skiing, taking a sauna, and beyond. Spring, sometimes overlooked, reveals cherry blossoms, migrating birds, and a sense of renewal across the region.
But what makes Door County distinct isn’t just its beauty, it’s its accessibility. More than 31,000 acres, roughly 10% of the area, are permanently protected. With five state parks, dozens of county and local preserves, and miles of publicly accessible shoreline, outdoor adventure here doesn’t require planning weeks in advance. It simply asks you to take a step outside.
So whether you’re chasing a sunset over the bay, paddling along the rocky cliffs of the Niagara Escarpment, or hiking a trail, Door County offers something increasingly rare in this era: space and opportunity to explore, and the freedom to do it your own way.

Door County’s landscape is shaped by water and stone. The peninsula unfolds gradually, through tree-lined roads, glimpses of craggy shoreline, and stretches of fields. At its core is the Niagara Escarpment, a band of ancient dolomite that runs through the region and surfaces here in subtle but persistent ways. In some places, it rises into bluffs overlooking Green Bay; in others, it meets the open water of Lake Michigan in sheer, weathered edges. Over time, wind and waves have worn into the land, shaping ledges, fissures, and even the occasional cave.
The county is further defined by glacial movement, which left behind a patchwork of terrain — thin soils over bedrock, pockets of wetlands, and mixed forests of hardwood, cedar, and pine. It’s a landscape that resists uniformity. Within a short distance, the ground underfoot can change from packed earth to exposed rock to sand (and back again).
That variation is part of what draws people, both visitors and locals, outside. Trails move between cover and exposure, rising and falling, occasionally opening to wide views of water before returning to the woods. The scale is manageable, and the outdoors approachable, but the experience rarely feels repetitive. What changes is not just the scenery, but the way it’s encountered and enjoyed, whether on foot, by bike, or from the water. Much of that access is shaped by the peninsula’s parks, places where the landscape is not only preserved, but made tangible through recreation.
With five state parks in one county, the only place in Wisconsin to boast that statistic, Door County’s parks aren’t just destinations, they’re an optimal way to explore the treasures of the outdoors.
Potawatomi State Park
Just outside Sturgeon Bay, the 1,200 acres of Potawatomi State Park serve as Door County’s welcome mat. Perched along the waters of Green Bay, the park is all about elevation, with limestone bluffs rising above the shoreline, serving up big-sky views and the first real taste of peninsula wildness. Potawatomi’s trails snake through mixed hardwood forest and out onto sunlit ridges, sometimes surprising you with a sudden, sweeping view of the bay. One must-do in the park is the eastern terminus of the Ice Age Trail, a bucket-list route and National Scenic Trail that starts (or ends) right here before stretching more than
a thousand miles across the Badger State.
Peninsula State Park
Hugging the shores of Green Bay, Peninsula State Park is a sprawling but never daunting 3,700 acres. It’s known as Wisconsin’s most complete park for its varied offerings, and it’s the sort of place where you can spend the whole day outside with zero agenda, letting curiosity (and maybe a picnic basket) lead the way. Kick off your morning on the bike trails, gliding through the fragrant forest and along sparkling shorelines. By midday, it’s hard to resist the call of the water. Watch for kayaks launching, swimmers splashing, and the steady hum of summer fun. Trails climb to Eagle Bluff for that accessible ‘wow’ moment: a sweeping bay view made even more glorious as the sun drops. Come winter, Peninsula swaps wheels for skis and snowshoes, but the magic stays, just a little quieter in the cold.
Newport State Park
Way up at the peninsula’s northern tip, Newport feels like Door County’s best-kept secret — a little raw, wild, and totally unplugged. (And with spotty cell phone service, it can also be an accidental digital detox! Please plan accordingly.) As a true wilderness park, Newport is light on amenities and big on adventure with miles of quiet trails, secret beaches, and that enchanting sense of being away from it all. While trails here meander along the water and through the woods (perfect for day hikes, wildflower walks, or a quiet paddle) this park truly comes alive at night. As Wisconsin’s first designated International Dark Sky Park, it’s a pilgrimage spot for stargazers: bring a blanket and watch the Milky Way twinkle overhead, catch meteor showers in August, or simply let the silence and darkness reset your senses. And with special programming designed around this Dark Sky designation, like
stargazing with an astronomer and guided nighttime hikes, there’s nothing quite like it.
Rock Island State Park
Getting to Rock Island is an adventure in itself and a true Door County rite of passage. No cars, no bridge, no shortcuts. Just a double ferry hop that shuttles you across ever-wilder water, until you feel the mainland slip away. As one of the state’s least-visited parks, the island hums with purposeful quiet. But you’ll see why it’s well worth the trek when you lace up your boots to meander along the nearly ten miles of paths. Think postcard-worthy views, hike-in campsites, and Icelandic-inspired architecture. Be sure to bring binoculars: birding here is exceptional, especially during spring and fall migrations. Down by the water, anglers cast for bass, walleye, and pike, while paddlers kayak for a new perspective on the rugged shoreline. And at the island’s tip, a short hike from the
ferry drop, stands Pottawatomie Lighthouse, Wisconsin’s oldest. The view from this storybook sentinel is all horizon, with the rest of Door County a dreamy blur on the edges.
Whitefish Dunes State Park
Next, swing on over to the Lake Michigan side for Whitefish Dunes, 867 acres of lakeside serenity. Due to its famed massive beach, summer is for swimmers and sun-chasers, but even then, you’ll usually find plenty of elbow room.
Off-season, it’s just you, the wind, and the rhythm of the waves, a totally different type of feel. Don’t miss the state’s largest sand dune, Old Baldy, which rises almost a hundred feet above the lake. Reach it via a 2.8 mile hike to the observation tower for the best views in the park.

Cave Point County Park reveals Lake Michigan at its most dramatic. Waves crash relentlessly against limestone cliffs, sculpting pockets and ledges through centuries of repetition. On brisk, windy days, mist erupts from the rock face and drenches even those who stay on land. Adventurous visitors can paddle around the base of the cliffs, earning hidden perspectives accessible only from the water. When the lake is calm, kayaking here becomes one of the most memorable ways to explore the park. Yet sometimes, the simplest act, like walking the shoreline, watching the lake’s constant push and pull against the rock, offers just as much wonder without being weather dependent.
Schoolhouse Beach on Washington Island stands in striking contrast. Its shore is lined not with cliffs, but with
smooth limestone rocks (a rarity, as one of an estimated five sandless beaches worldwide). The water here is remarkably clear, and the division between land and lake blurs into a seamless transition. Swimming in this protected cove is a Door County rite of passage, and well worth the ferry ride to access it (another dose of adventure on the water.)
On and around the peninsula, sailing sets its own tempo. At Ephraim Yacht Club, boats glide in and out, their sails billowing with every change in wind. Lessons and youth programs keep this tradition vibrant and accessible by inviting newcomers into the fold.
Fishing offers a quieter, water-based counterpoint. Early mornings on Lake Michigan are marked by lines cast into silence and time slowing down. Here, patience is the point, and contentment can be found in the simple act of being present, regardless of the catch. (But if they’re biting, anglers can expect to ensnare everything
from salmon and trout to walleye, northern pike, bass and perch.)
On Land
Step away from the lake, and Door County trades its watery soundtrack for a slower, earthier tone. Sunlit fields stretch between emerald forests, gravel roads snake past orchards laden with fruit, and the landscape feels like a boundless invitation to adventure. Horseback riding offers one of the most unhurried ways to move through it. Trails thread beneath a canopy of mixed hardwoods and softwoods, where sun-dappled light showcases the peninsula’s more overlooked side. Enjoying the region at this slow-motion pace offers another lens on the Door County experience.
Inland, the hiking changes character entirely. Trails move away from open shoreline and into denser, quieter landscapes that feel more layered than expansive. At The Ridges Sanctuary, boardwalks wind through
wetlands and forest, where the differing views create a sense of enclosure that feels distinct from the coast. Other inland paths, like at White Cedar Nature Preserve, pass through cedar swamp and dense forest, where sound carries differently and it’s less about sights and more about atmosphere. For a more elevated perspective, quite literally, guided zipline courses move through the canopy, offering an additional way to enjoy the land. It’s a reminder that Door County’s terrain isn’t defined only by its edges, but by everything in between. Golf, too, feels perfectly at home here. Courses embrace the natural contours of the land, fairways rolling gently through open fields and reaching toward shimmering water. Ready to swap clubs for a set of wheels? Biking is pure Door County magic, where one minute you’re pedaling beneath a green cathedral of trees, and the next you’re coasting past farmland or a blooming,
wildflower-filled meadow. The Ahnapee State Trail offers perhaps the best long distance option in the county. Built along a former rail corridor, it carries riders through small towns and stretches of open countryside on a mostly level, crushedstone path. The motion here is steady and uninterrupted, allowing the landscape to unfold in long, unbroken sections rather than quick bursts. Of course, you don’t have to stick to the official trails. County roads loop together major towns like Fish Creek, Ephraim, and Baileys Harbor, with orchards and woods stitched between. These rides are Door County at its most spontaneous, where the real fun is in the freedom to stop whenever something, like a fully stocked farm stand or an especially epic visage, catches your eye.
What unites these landbased experiences is space, thousands of protected acres that offer the room to wander without hurry, to linger without a plan, and to discover
Door County’s quieter corners, some far from the water’s edge. On land, the peninsula doesn’t clamor for your attention; instead, it rewards careful observation and a willingness to slow down.
Ice, Ice Baby
When the season turns, Door County quiets, tucking in its edges and letting the hush of snowfall redraw the shape of the land and coast. In this slower season, different recreational activities abound. Ice fishing is a key sign of winter’s shift, with a scattering of tiny, colorful shanties dotting the frozen bay. Underneath, the lake is alive, moving unseen beneath the surface. Above, time slows, marked by a thermos steaming, laughter carrying far across the quiet, the occasional nibble on the line, made all the more special by the company you keep.
From there, winter stretches inland, with Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, and winter hiking. These activities dial the
pace down even further. Fields and forests become spaces for slow exploration, every step deliberate and meditative.
Listen for the crunch of snow, the hush of wind threading through bare branches, the exhale of your own breath made visible in the cold.
But winter isn’t all peace and quiet. At Hill 17, sledding is pure, uncomplicated joy: laughter echoing as you speed downhill, the world a blur of white snow and pink cheeks. And if conditions allow, the fun continues on the ice, when the frozen lake becomes an impromptu hockey rink, the soundtrack a mix of shouts, skates scraping, and the slap of a stick reaching for the puck. The rules are simple: show up and play and savor the fleetingness of natural lake ice.
And always, after the crisp cold, there is blissful warmth.

Step from biting air into the warm embrace of cedar, let the sauna heat seep into your bones, and watch the world blur. It’s not an escape, just a new way to inhabit and appreciate winter, to hold both chill and comfort in the same breath.
In the end, Door County returns to the quiet. It’s a place that doesn’t reveal itself in a single view or adventure, but in layers, each one shaped by how you choose to explore it. And long after you leave, it’s that sense of outdoor discovery that stays with you: not just what you saw, but the feeling of having found it, if only for a moment, in your own way.

newport state park
Wisconsin’s only formally designated wilderness park — 2,373 acres of forests, wetlands, and meadows. Fern Trail has interpretative panels to guide visitors through the forest. There are miles of hiking and offroad biking trails, cross-country skiing paths, beaches, and campgrounds.

The last few miles of highway 42 curves and zig zags through fields and forest and ends at Northport Pier. It is one of the county’s most beautiful and photographed sites — especially in autumn when maple trees are in full color. A must see.

There are exhibits on shipwrecks, lifesaving techniques, and the Ted Berch model collection — twenty Great Lakes vessels, including one of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald. Tour a 1930s tug boat and watch a film of its last fishing trip.
This tranquil village, nestled on the shoreline of Lake Michigan, has sandy beaches, rocky shoreline cliffs, peaceful trails, quiet back roads, parks, festivals, and a great farmer’s market.

This park has the tallest sand dunes in the state of Wisconsin. Watch the waterfowl at Clark Lake, hike the trails, or use the boardwalk to explore the wetlands. Ecology, geology, and human history exhibits are on display in the park’s nature center.

On Deck turns 40. The story behind it spans back further.
This year marks four decades since Mitch Larson opened his first On Deck location, though the story begins well before that — with a friend who didn’t like to drive.
“He used to take me to clothing shows,” Larson recalls. “He goes, would you drive me to Chicago? So we went to Chicago, then Dallas, and I thought, I really like this. You walk into a room and pick out merchandise.”
At the time, both he and his partner had full lives outside the store. It was a side venture for them both. Eventually the calling became clear. Mitch’s instinct, eye for what fits, what lasts, and what belongs, has driven On Deck ever since.
Today you’ll find an On Deck store in three towns, each distinctly different not just in layout or location, but in the merchandise itself, with brands and styles rarely the same between them.
Larson still does most of the buying. He’s already planning for 2027. “That’s the fun part. We’re always looking for what’s next.”
The Sister Bay location occupies the same property on which Larson’s great-grandparents, Mary and Wenzel Bunda, ran a business in the late 1800s. After changing of hands, fires, passing of generations, Mitch made it his own.
He restored the storefronts, studying old photographs, working with his architect to reconstruct how the block once looked. Layers have been peeled back, revealing original floors and headboard ceilings, restoring them for whoever comes next.
“We wanted something that would be there for the next 100 years,” Larson says. “It doesn’t have to be On Deck.” The belief that the places we build matter beyond our own tenure within them is one he has implemented with each On Deck location. When On Deck opened, the season ran Memorial Day to Labor Day. Today the peninsula draws visitors year-round, and On Deck has kept pace, staying open through every season.
With year-round business, Larson built a loyal full-time staff. When asked what he’s most proud of after 40 years, he doesn’t mention square footage or sales volume. “I didn’t do it alone,” he says simply. “I’ve had the most amazing career with the people I’ve worked with.”
He calls the On Deck experience “merchantainment,” a Walt Disney term he’s fond of. The music, the lighting, the way goods are arranged. It’s all considered. “I just want it to be a great experience,” Mitch says. “Something you’ll tell your friends about.”

This old harbor town was settled in 1835 as a logging center and is the gateway to the peninsula — Northern Door. Three historic districts, centuryold lighthouses, and museums reflect its legendary maritime heritage. Go on a boat tour!

The well-known Rowleys Bay Resort sadly burned down in 2023, but the area still offers one of the most astounding water views in the county. Featuring easy land and water access to
Mink River Basin, a watershed and flowage with excellent fishing, it’s hard to overstate the beauty of a blue-andgreen estuary view that spills out from the verdant shoreline towards greater Lake Michigan.
This little fishing village sits on the Green Bay shoreline in Southern Door. Increase Claflin, the county’s first settler, built a log cabin here in 1835. Today it is known for walleye, bass, and perch fishing. Its annual festival, ‘Little Sturgeon Days’ has live music, a horseshoe tournament and parade. Go fishing! Located in the town of Gardner.
This surprising little place, tucked away in the heart of the county, is surrounded by farmland. There’s a winery that offers tastings and a shop with its own products, a restaurant with a model train that entertains kids and adults alike, a friendly pub, and a pizza place with outdoor dining. Congratulations to the Sister Bay Bowl on its 75th Anniversary! Over three generations, the Willems family’s legacy has made this historic gathering spot a cherished Bowling Hub and Supper Club, where making traditions, treasuring memories, and creating community are at the heart of every visit. From Earl and Rita Willems’ earliest days running ‘The Bowl’ in 1951, to their 1958 purchase of the Sister Bay Hotel, to building the storied 6-lane bowling alley and opening the supper club in 1964, their vision shaped a welcoming space for locals and visitors.
For decades, The Bowl has been a meeting place, weaving generations together through hospitality, food, and nostalgic charm. The history lives on with its famous perch, BBQ ribs, Brandy Old-Fashioned Sweet, even the paper score sheet and bowling-lane tables. From family reunions and weddings to business events, casual nights, and the Barney Fun Run charity event, The Bowl remains the trusted backdrop for countless special moments.

How many art and design careers were ultimately launched by the famed Peninsula School of Art, you may wonder? One such artist is Russ Zabler, who was taking PenArt photography classes back in the late 1960s and went on to take his first Metal Arts class in 1972. The year 2026 marks Russ’s 54th year creating unique jewelry designs.
“Jewelry had lit a fire in me,” Russ said recently. First, he worked at a trade shop doing jewelry repair and custom work on Jeweler’s Row in downtown Chicago at 5 N. Wabash. He subsequently took over that business and ran it for seven and a half years, all while pursuing his own work in summer art shows. In 1983, Russ bought his current Ephraim shop and remade it into Zabler Design Jewelers. A year later, he acquired his store in the Chicago area, in Clarendon Hills, Illinois.
As always, the two stores offer countless alternatives for engagement rings, from antique diamond rings to peach-pink sapphire to morganite and rose gold combinations. Russ simply has an original and inventive way to inspire clients with a curated selection.
Today, Russ Zabler’s motivation remains the same as when he started out in the business. “Honestly, I just love the connections I get to make with individuals and being able to work with beautifully colored gems and rare objects.”

An Excerpt from Theresa Evans’s “Choosing to Die”
Journal entry. August 21, 2020.
After two weeks in quarantine due to Covid, I am relieved to have moved into Mom’s home and settled in for the next three months. She has chosen her 80th birthday to drop her body. The rich palette of the summer is on full display in Mom’s garden. Sun glints off abundant shades of greens and illuminates the flowers in a kaleidoscope of color; boundaries are muddled as one plant spills into another. Bees unwittingly carry the pollen collected on their hairy bodies from plant to plant; butterflies flit amongst the flowers, seeking out their soft landings, and droplets of water twirl in the air as songbirds bathe in the pond to clean their feathers. It is still the season of activity and growth.
Despite the cacophony of life and color surrounding me, a heavy, dull ache has taken root in my sternum. This is the last season I will stand in my mother’s garden. In eighty-six days, she will lie down and she will not get up. Right now, eighty-six days feels like enough, but I know time will warp my perception, and eighty-six days will feel like eighty-six minutes. This entry is the beginning of a journal I will keep to document these last days with Mom and my sisters. Eighty-six days until November 15.
Mom has chosen to die on November 15 at 11:00 a.m. Medical Assistance in Dying, or MAID, has been legal in Canada since 2016. By 2023, 60,301 Canadians had died using MAID. We have heard the objections of those who consider this an abomination: a sin against God and a selfish decision that is not ours to make. These religious and philosophical objections have prompted Mom to keep her decision to a close circle of family and friends. It is
enough to consciously die; for even when death feels like a welcome reprieve, we are hardwired to live. Once the choice has been made, there is no room for the opinions of others. Her body, mind, and heart must meld into a cohesive unit in support of this literal life-altering decision. This is but one of the ethical dilemmas we find ourselves divided over in our current culture. Resolving these dilemmas is not the purpose of this book. I am not writing to take on these big questions. I am writing to record the final days spent with my mom before she lay down in her bed and received the medication that stopped her breathing and ended her life. I am writing for myself as I continue the process of integrating and accepting that she really is gone. I am writing for my daughter Stephanie, who was not able to be with us. I am writing for anyone who has thought about medically assisted death as an option, and I am writing for those who have never considered medically assisted death as an option. Before this, I would have put giving birth to my daughter at the top of my list of most profound life experiences. Now a birth and a death share equal weight in my heart. So, I write because I feel called to share this most profound experience with anyone
who feels called to read about it.
For four years before Mom’s death, I made multiple emergency visits home. There is never a convenient time to be called to your mother’s deathbed. Our lives are filled with countless moving parts, and mine is no exception. These twelve-hour drives were arduous. I vacillated between guilt and envy younger sisters were there shouldering the hands-on care. I had moved a thousand miles away in my late teens. Now in my late fifties, I was scheming ways to return to my family’s hometown in southwestern Ontario.
Autopilot got me through these long drives home. Years of navigating this trip made my internal GPS more reliable than my current muddled mind and my tear-filled vision.
Emanating from deep beneath the surface of my breastbone was a hot and heavy sensation. This is where the ache of getting there too late to say goodbye and hold Mom one last time always took up residence. And what if she didn’t die? Would this be but one more step deeper into the downward spiral that had become her current quality of life? The medications and interventions promising relief from the ravages of end-stage heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) felt like broken promises. When did my prayers shift from wanting her to live? Now I prayed that these interventions tenuously tethering Mom to her physical body would prove ineffective. That the power of her free spirit would take flight. More than anything, I wanted Mom to die peacefully. I prayed that if grace and the universe were on my side, I would be there with her when she left.
I had memorized my way through the maze of elevators and long corridors in this hospital hundreds of miles from my home. I knew which floor the ICU was on as my hand automatically reached for the buzzer to ask for admittance. I knew which floor the cafeteria was on. I knew where to park without having to
pay. I knew how to navigate the after-hours entrance.
Like entering a church, I quietly tiptoed into the ICU. Instead of an altar, there was the nurse’s station. The hub of the unit. As a registered nurse, I had spent several years working in Intensive Care Units. I knew the protocol. I knew how to approach without being labeled a needy family member. Bowing and making the sign of the cross were replaced with a nod and a glance. Tithing included a box of bagels for the nurses. Time and circumstances would dictate whether I felt the need to flex my nursing muscle to advocate for Mom. My heart belonged to the child who loved her mother. My brain had been taught to make meaningful medical decisions.
It was always the middle of the night when I arrived. My sisters would ask me to wait until morning. Common sense told me to wait until morning, but I was never willing to hedge my bet that Mom would still be there if I delayed my arrival by even a few hours. On one of these visits, I walked into Mom’s room after
completing a ten-hour drive not knowing whether she was dead or alive. This was before the days of cell phones. I wrapped my arms around her and held her close. I told her how glad I was that she was still alive so I could tell her how much I loved her. Years later, she would tell me, “That was the moment I knew you really loved me.” Mom and I shared a complicated kind of love.
It was a relief when she was admitted to the intensive care unit. The alternative was a ward or a shared room. This is Canada, where most hospitals are utilitarian and not five-star hotels. The ICU meant a private room filled with silence, save for the beeps and humming of the monitors recording vital signs for the doctors and nurses. I watched her sleep. The hospital gown and bedsheets were tangled around her. Mom’s knees were drawn up toward her chin while her shoulders and head curled down toward her knees. I recognized this protective posture; the fetal position is the oldest hardwired reflex in all living creatures. We spend our first nine months in the womb in this position. I have heard it said those nine months are our most peaceful and where we feel the safest. Whenever we feel threatened, an unconscious response activates and curls us into versions of this round ball. We do it to protect our vital organs. We do it to protect our heart. We all do it—even woolly caterpillars do it. Mom was imitating a woolly caterpillar while her nervous system responded to pain and fear.
Even with the oxygen face mask, her breaths were shallow. She looked worn-out, tired and fragile. When she opened her eyes, they glistened not with life, but with fear. Silently, Mom was pleading with me to help her. Despite my years as a registered nurse, I felt completely inept. Did she want me to help her live or did she want me to help her die?

After an Illness, Walking the Dog
Wet things smell stronger, and I suppose his main regret is that he can sniff just one at a time. In a frenzy of delight he runs way up the sandy road— scored by freshets after five days of rain. Every pebble gleams, every leaf.
When I whistle he halts abruptly and steps in a circle, swings his extravagant tail. The he rolls and rubs his muzzle in a particular place, while the drizzle falls without cease, and Queen Anne’s lace and Goldenrod bend low.
The top of the logging road stands open and light. Another day, before hunting starts, we’ll see how far it goes, leaving word first at home. The footing is ambiguous.
Soaked and muddy, the dog drops, panting, and looks up with what amounts to a grin. It’s so good to be uphill with him, nicely winded, and looking down on the pond.
A sound commences in my left ear like the sound of the sea in a shell; a downward, vertiginous drag comes with it.
Time to head home. I wait until we’re nearly out to the main road to put him back on the leash, and he —the designated optimist— imagines to the end that he is free.

The Baileys Harbor Range Lights, built in 1869 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989, are the only functional lighthouses of their design. These structures helped keep ships safe from the reefs and shallows of Baileys Harbor. Sailors would align the white light of the 39-foot Upper Range Light with the red beacon of the 22-foot Lower Range Light to navigate safely. With emphasis on 1870-1940, our collection of farm buildings and old-time farm implements is impressive. 19th century craft demonstrations and kids’ activities on summer Wednesdays. The Veblen Study Cabin is an especially unique piece of Island history. From 1896 to 1926, world-famous economist Thorstein Veblen spent summers here, and in 1916 he built a study cabin and home. The Washington Island Heritage Conservancy moved the cabin and it is being restored on the shore of Little Lake, next to Jacobsen Museum.

Saving the Stories of the Peninsula
Founded on October 1, 1926, the Door County Historical Society began with a simple but powerful mission: to preserve and share the unique history of Wisconsin’s peninsula communities before those stories were lost to time. What started as a small group of passionate local historians has grown into a vibrant organization dedicated to protecting Door County’s heritage for future generations.
Over the past century, the Society has collected thousands of artifacts, photographs, documents, and personal stories that help tell the story of Door County—from its earliest Indigenous inhabitants and immigrant settlers to its maritime traditions, agricultural roots, fishing villages, and thriving communities. The organization was instrumental in the creation of the Door County Museum, helped establish the Door County Parks system, and erected monuments and markers at historic sites across the peninsula to ensure important stories and places would never be forgotten.
Today, the Society operates some of Door County’s most treasured historic sites, including Heritage Village and Eagle Bluff Light Station. Through immersive exhibits, living history demonstrations, tours, lectures, and special events, visitors can step directly into the stories that shaped the peninsula.
As the Door County Historical Society celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2026, it does so not only with pride in its accomplishments, but with renewed commitment to the future. From restoring historic structures to recording oral histories through projects like “100 Stories for 100 Years,” the Society continues to ensure that Door County’s history remains alive, relevant, and deeply connected to the community it serves.

The Making of ‘Birthplace of the Thunder’
Door County’s natural beauty and unmistakable creative spirit have long inspired artists — and our band, Zen of Thieves , is no exception.
The County’s landscapes, trails, and community played a defining role in shaping our debut album, Birthplace of the Thunder , recorded at the Sturgeon Bay studio of Grammy nominated cellist Hans Christian.
The project showcases an extraordinary lineup of beloved Door County performers, including Eric Lewis, Jimmy Kaplan, Karen Mal, Steve Koehler, Lee Becker, Paul Taylor, Amy Chaffee, Holly Feldman, and Matt Zembrowski.
Described by one critic as “arrestingly beautiful”, the songs offer a psychospiritual take on today’s world, exploring compassion, optimism, mysticism, myth, and the life of Northern Sky legend Fred Alley.
Many of these songs were born directly from Door County’s landscape. North by Night emerged during a midnight walk along Red Cherry Road over Easter weekend, where the steady North Star gave a sense of calm and continuity. When I was teaching in the San Francisco Bay area, I’d fly into Milwaukee at night on school breaks. Driving a rented car up I-43 to the Door, it felt like with every mile I was escaping further into a world of comforting darkness and safety. All these thoughts came together into this new song.
Door County’s trails also shaped other tracks on the album. Nothing but a Song took root on Newport’s gorgeous Hotz Trail; The World as I Found It came together on Peninsula State Park’s Hemlock Trail; and The Lantern was born during another Red Cherry
Road walk under the stars. Each piece carries its own slice of the peninsula’s magic.
The album also pays tribute to my dear friend Fred Alley, cofounder of Northern Sky Theater, whose artistry and spirit continue to resonate 25 years after his passing. Songs such as PureHeart Guitar, Fisher Goes to the Skyworld , and Moonlight and Marshmallows (originally written for Fred’s voice) are woven deeply with his memory. Matt Zembrowski and Karen Mal deliver a beautiful performance of Moonlight and Marshmallows on the album.
To celebrate this project, Northern Sky Theater will host a special album release concert on Sunday, July 19 , at the indoor Gould Theater — an event that promises to bring the community together for an evening of music, storytelling, and Door County magic. Birch Creek’s 51st Season
Birch Creek Music Performance Center is Door County’s one-ofa-kind concert venue, offering performances in its historic Dutton Concert Barn. Each summer, advanced music students and professional faculty artists come to campus for four two-week academy sessions in Percussion, Steel Pan & World Music; Symphony and Big Band Jazz. Located three miles east of Egg Harbor, the rural setting provides an inspiring backdrop where students learn and rehearse with faculty by day and present 30 matinee and evening concerts throughout the season. Additional outreach performances take place at venues across Door County. The 2026 season begins Thursday, June 18, with pre-concert music at 6:30 pm and the main performance at 7:00 pm .
Faculty members and guest artists return for the Fall Concert Series on Saturday evenings in September, followed by Birch Creek’s annual Christmas and Valentine’s concerts . Wind Ensemble, Chamber Music, and Piano Retreats are held in mid-August.

Fishstock Concert Series’s 2026 season begins with a July 5th performance by singer/songwriter Will Kruger and continues through nine additional concerts to the season’s final concert by Eric Lewis & Friends on Sept. 6th.
The 10-concert Fishstock Concert Series includes a wide range of well-known musicians in the genres of folk, Americana, and alternative music, said concert promoter Steve Ellmann. “This is a group of touring musicians that represents many of the best musicians on the current music scene, with the heavy emphasis on folk that our patrons have always enjoyed.”

Working in a converted chicken coop north of Ellison Bay, for 40-plus years writer Norbert Blei (8/23/1935 – 4/23/2013) chronicled Door County through the lives of its inhabitants. Door County Journal: July Notebook
It slips in at the heels of June, entirely unannounced, but for the usual hoopla surrounding the advent of the Fourth of July. Which in Door County marks the true beginning of the tourist season. The first time of the year when all the motel rooms may be booked, when all the condos may be occupied, when all the restaurants will have a wait, when all the gift shops will experience a field day, and all the major roads through the towns and villages will be clogged with traffic. When one begins to hear, on almost a daily basis, the scream of the ambulance, the flashing lights through towns and villages, down the main two highways, 42 and 57, as paramedics rush to attend yet another roadside accident. Welcome to summer.
But outdoors, in the sun, in the woods, on the water, one barely perceives the drift from one month to the other. Especially if the hot and humid weather, the dog days of July, have not yet appeared. We take whatever is handed us in weather. We remain, still somewhat dazed, in the presence or absence or merely memories of spring. We wait for whatever comes next. And what comes inevitably, hot or cold, rain or shine, is the Fourth of July. The county will not rest again till Labor Day and the slow retreat of the summer tourist. Not complete until Fall Fest, and the waning golden days of October
Aside from the usual Fourth festivities, this is also the weekend when the local economics becomes almost laughable (for those of us who have lived here long enough to witness and criticize the insanity of the summer season) as everyone, including the non-business local, without restaurant, gift shop, gallery, motel, etc., attempts to get in on the act, entice the visiting hordes and cash in, by the only, most rudimentary enterprise available for a local left to his own devices: the ubiquitous yard/garage/rummage sale. When locals (especially those lucky enough to be located along the major Door highways) decorate their lawns and mailboxes with a string of pennants, colorful streamers, balloons, and handmade YARD SALE signs, attempting to hook passersby into slowing down, stopping, turning in, taking a look at all the treasured junk accumulated through the years (or left over from last year) and hopefully sold at bargain prices.
I’m reminded of one house along the main drag of a particular village where each year the owner religiously spreads out clothing and junk on tables and racks outside the garage and down the driveway every weekend of the summer season. Pure peddler mentality. Another negative impact of rampant tourism on local culture. (To be reduced to this...mostly sham, a small part necessity.) Just trying to make a living off the tourist industry, folks. And I’m low man on the totem pole. This is the best I can do. This is all I can do. All I’ve got.
Muggy morning. You can feel the earth gasping for breath. A coolness from the lake, drifting over the woods and fields last night, evidenced by remnants of a vaporous mist in the yellow light of the sun, a sparkling dew brightening the evergreens and tall grasses. The roadside growth yields its mystery, the invisibility of nature’s quiet warfare in such dewy light. A green battleground mined with intricate patterns of ground and aerial spiders’ webs hang, sway, flutter like flags, pocket the lower clumps of grasses like filigree dream flowers, pulsing in the morning sunlight.
July Morning, Sister Bay
A morning after a night of heavy thunderstorms when the earth smells like fresh wash hung out to dry and the wafting fragrance of sweet clover rises like heat from the fallen tangle of vibrant green weeds and wildflowers cut the day before in the ditches along the roadside.
In the backyard, the night air heavily ladened with scent of mock orange, the white flowers filled with their light and perfume.
In the ditch across the road, orange tiger lilies open. (In early July.) Garnet, pink, and white flocks. Black-eyed Susans, Sweet pea in full flower in all the ditches along Highway Q, high above Ephraim.
By the middle of July, though the intensity of summer everywhere still in evidence, careful eyes will note a subtle change upon the landscape. The lush green of the woods and fields has reached a standstill. Now a gradual turning back. A slight fading of summer green infiltrates the undergrowth; a limpness to leaves and blades of grass to be seen and felt. Vibrant green fountains of ferns curl stiffly, tiny leaves turn crispy brown. The once proud sprays extinguish themselves as the plants swoon back to earth. Before the month in over, forest floor, fields, the tops of trees will yield their color dramatically, invisibly, in a slow retreat toward fall.
The hard white cherries in the orchards are taking on a pink sunburn by mid-July.
The dust and heat of haying has begun in those fields, among those dwindling Door County farmers where the land is still worked in the old ways of sustenance and pastoral beauty. Tractors and balers and hay wagons. Not as many rectangular bales as the past. Now the huge round cylinders of hay occupy the sunset fields like some prehistoric animals lounging in the landscape. Ah, but what a beauty and holiness to the earth in haying times. What a serenity to fields trimmed and groomed, basking in the early evening, the lavender light of midsummer.
It comes, usually in July. Sometimes ushered in the bedroom windows at night. A sound through the leaves of the maple trees, a scent of freshness like cool water, a feeling of difference in the air wafting over your sleeping body, causing you to reach in the darkness for the sheet, the thin layer of blanket tossed over the foot of the bed in deference to hot summer nights, and loosely gather the body’s warmth of this night’s domain between two exceedingly comfortable areas of repose: a border of partly warm, partly cool. With daylight all of the outdoors seems invigorated, refreshed in this singular moment of cool air rushing over the water, through the flashing leaves of the trees, into the very fields, making the wildflowers dance. The message is as clear as the cool wind: autumn is on its way.
July is just too full of everything; I can’t wait to be left alone.

Driving alone down the backroads in the center of the county, a whiff of ripe manure from the barnyard. A stench so sweet, so real. A reminder of what the county used to be. What the earth is. How we desecrate it, our very nature, through development. — Norbert Blei
