A Note from the Editor

With the publication of this issue of Door Wedding, we’ve reached a new milestone: we’ve now featured upwards of 100 couples who have gotten married in Door County! It’s a proud moment to think back on the past seven years and see how this magazine and the wedding industry itself have evolved. Each year brings new faces and families to the area – all in the name of love.

On a more personal note, my husband and I are also approaching a milestone: our 10-year anniversary in 2027. I’ve been reflecting on how fast that decade seemed to go and all the things that we’ve faced together: our achievements and losses, our pivots and mistakes, and the big, life-changing decisions we’ve made.

Today, we are very different people from those young newlyweds we once were; we’ve learned lessons we’ve never wanted to learn and have also grown in ways we could have never predicted. Opinions we once held strongly have softened (or surprisingly flipped), and beliefs that once seemed to define us have changed.

Yet, despite the constant undulations and reinvention, we are still strong in our commitment to sharing this life together and supporting each other in chasing our passions, finding fulfillment and savoring life as a family. It’s a beautiful thing to look back on our wedding day now and see the journey we’ve been on and recall all the versions of ourselves we’ve grown through.

So this year, I want to give a special shout-out to all Door Wedding couples out there celebrating a new milestone together – cheers!

May your love be everlasting and ever-evolving.

COTTAGE, EPHRAIM

Grace & Thor

Lakes have always been a theme in Grace and Thor’s love story. The couple initially met when a mutual friend invited them both for a weekend at a family lake house and they hit it off in spectacular fashion. Grace’s family has been in Door County for generations, and she introduced Thor to the area. It wasn’t long before he and his family were also infatuated with the peninsula and the surrounding bays and lakes.

The wedding was a shared vision from day one; Grace’s parents and her aunt and uncle had both celebrated their marriages at the family cottage, so Grace and Thor were committed to carrying on the tradition. “We both shared the vision of an outdoor ceremony overlooking the water, having a cocktail hour on the beautiful lawn and dinner and dancing on the tennis court with a big tent to cover it,” Grace said.

The cottage itself was already a beautiful setting, having benefited from being owned by a career interior designer, Grace’s grandmother. Set back from the shoreline on Eagle Harbor in Ephraim, it offered a picturesque combination of classic cottage elegance and shimmering views of the bay of Green Bay. The couple incorporated family heirloom elements into their signage, decor and invitations, using details like the hundreds of black and white photos adorning the walls of the cottage and highlighting the beautiful stone sculptures around the property.

The logistics of hosting the 200+ person event at a private residence was the hardest part; from powering the entire tent with electricity to the bread baskets and serving utensils — they had to consider every detail. Then there was the added logistics of planning a bus schedule to deliver each guest to the cottage (and later return them).

“Luckily we had the help of some amazing local vendors to make those tasks less daunting,” Grace said.

“My parents and aunt and uncle were all married at the family cottage, so we knew we wanted to carry on the tradition from the start.”

Grace

“Seeing each other for the first time that day on opposite sides of the aisle was magical. Our ceremony itself was short and sweet and after we got to enjoy every minute of our cocktail hour with guests, which was a blast,” Grace said. “Since it was the longest day of the year, we took pictures after dinner at sunset — unforgettable!”

Asked for planning advice, Grace said “embrace the amazing local vendors and get to know more about their businesses and the people you are hiring. All of the vendors are incredibly passionate and dedicated, which makes a Door County wedding one of a kind.”

TRIED AND TRUE

When Grace’s parents celebrated their wedding at the cottage they put a big tent over the tennis court for the reception, had a variety of live music and bussed guests in and out — so they did the same!

TABLE FOR TWO

“We both agree that dinner alone together at the sweetheart table was so special,” Grace said. “It was the perfect opportunity to take time to reflect and celebrate just us two.”

PRE-CEREMONY VOWS

Grace and Thor both handwrote their custom vows, which were delivered to each other by members of the bridal party. It was a special moment to read them just before the ceremony began.

PLANNING JOURNEY

“Some favorite memories from the planning process were weekends spent in Door County prior to the wedding with our families discussing plans over yummy meals and meeting vendors,” Grace said.

Allison & Sean

A Family & Folk-Art-Inspired Celebration on the Bay

BJÖRKLUNDEN + TOP DECK AT GORDON LODGE, BAILEYS HARBOR

Allison and Sean initially met in 2018 as recent transplants to Los Angeles — connecting over their shared experience of relocating there — but it wasn’t until years later when Allison had moved back to Wisconsin to be closer to family during the pandemic that they gave dating a shot. Sean messaged her via Instagram after seeing she was recently single and she decided to take a chance, saying “I told him if he was serious he could visit me on one of two free weekends I had in the foreseeable future. He booked a ticket ASAP and after a few months of long-distance dating, I moved back to LA!” An engagement happened on Leap Day in 2024 at Luna Luna in Los Angeles; Luna Luna is a touring art amusement park that was developed in the 80’s and was gathering dust in storage until Canadian rapper Drake bought it and revived it for a Global tour.

As for their wedding planning, Allison described herself as a “reluctant bride,” saying “I was very bent on eloping at first! I was not the kind of girl who spent hours of my youth dreaming about a wedding, so it was very hard for me to even know where to start. Sean on the other hand pointed out a lot of good reasons to have

a real, live, in person wedding, mainly that it’s one of the only celebrations of your life that you’re alive and present for.”

Narrowing it down to Door County was pretty simple. Although they didn’t have family ties to the area, Sean and Allison had both visited independently before meeting and knew it was a magical destination. After they stumbled on a photo of Boynton Chapel at Björklunden they immediately agreed that it was where they wanted to host their wedding. Within the week they had booked the chapel and Top Deck at Gordon Lodge, both in Baileys Harbor.

Comfort and time together were top priorities when it came to planning. “I just really wanted the whole event to be kind of homey and warm, and really the biggest priority was making sure our guests had an absolute blast,” Allison said. “We wanted our venues to be gorgeous but cozy, and we wanted to create an environment where everyone really got to spend quality time together fueled with topnotch food and drink. For many of our guests, it was their first time all meeting across family lines, and everyone’s comfort and ease were top priority. Everything else — décor, florals, attire — were not details we sweated. It was, most simply, intended to be a really, really great party, and everything else came second.”

“We knew no matter where we chose, our guests were putting in a huge effort to join us for our wedding. I put myself in my guests’ shoes and asked if I had to travel hours or even days to attend this wedding, where in Wisconsin would be most worth my while?”

Allison

As for aesthetics, Allison pulled a lot of inspiration from old family photos and design elements from her childhood home, saying: “I was especially inspired by a lot of my grandma’s and mom’s quilting, and my dad’s woodworking and carving — and folk art in general.”

A favorite moment of the day was post-ceremony, pre-reception after they had departed as newlyweds in Sean’s prized yellow Audi A4. “We grabbed a few canned iced coffees from Baileys 57 and just pulled over and caught up after not seeing each other all day,” Allison said. There wasn’t anything they would change about the event, “except maybe I would’ve tacked on late night cheese curds to our catering menu!”

NO PEEKING

They didn’t do a ‘first look’ which surprised a lot of people. “There are so few great surprises in life anymore, so we both felt strongly about preserving that tradition” Allison said.

HAND HEWN

“I asked my dad to make our cake topper because in my head I knew I wanted something reminiscent of those Dutch kissing couple figurines but couldn’t find any as a bride and groom,” Allison said.

REHEARSAL PIZZA

The rehearsal dinner was held at

Sister Bay Village Hall and was catered by Wild Tomato pizza. Allison said “10/10 recommend both if you’re trying to do a rehearsal dinner that’s budget-friendly!”

MAGIC AT HAND

Cocktail hour was a major highlight as they hired a magician who did several sets of close-up magic. “There was a lot of shared laughing and delighted shrieking!” Allison said.

VENDORS KNOW BEST

When planning, Allison says “let your venue/vendors guide you, especially if you’re not from the area! Find people you jive with, and let them do their best work.”

Aubree & Patrick

An Elegantly Modern Event in Emerald

Aubree and Patrick met while in college together at Creighton University, but didn’t date until life brought them back together in the Twin Cities after graduation. Aubree spent summers in Door County at her family’s summer home, which is also where Patrick chose to propose. “Door County is our happy place,” Aubree said, “so getting engaged there with our families around us made it incredibly special.”

Getting married in Door County was an easy choice, but Patrick had one request: to avoid the hottest months of the year. “We crossed our fingers that late August would cooperate,” Aubree said, “and turns out we couldn’t of ask for better weather.”

One of the biggest challenges was finding a venue to comfortably accommodate the 250+ guest count, plus securing lodging well in advance. “Encourage your guests to book early as accomodations do fill fast in peak season,” Aubree recommended.

The overall vision was “country club meets elegant supper club,” and with an interior designer mother and wedding photographer sister, Aubree had talented assistants to help her create a timeless and modern event. “The hardest part of the planning was the logistics. The design and decor was the fun part!” Aubree said.

LOVE NOTES

Aubree surprised Patrick with a song she wrote and recorded for him, which played during the ceremony. “It was such a heartfelt moment and made the day feel even more special,” Patrick said.

CHEESE FOR ONE

Aubree’s family has owned a

cheese business, so were sure to have personal cheese boards at each person’s seat for dinner.

DANCE UNTIL YOU DROP

Aside from their “I dos,” the dance floor was the highlight. “Our live band had everyone dancing non-stop and the energy was amazing! We didn’t want the night to end,” Patrick said.

Lindsay & Tommy THE ALPINE RESORT, EGG HARBOR
A Classic Wedding with True Door County Charm

Lindsay describes first meeting Tommy as a “love at first Chris Farley quote” type of moment. Mutual friends had painted the picture for them saying, “I think you’re either going to love or hate this person” since their personalities are so similar. “We are both always the loudest in the room and bring a sense of humor,” Lindsay said. “Luckily for us, the attraction was instant!”

Lindsay’s family had been coming to Door County for years, and when she was young and single, she told her dad that it was her dream wedding destination. So when Tommy popped the question on the pier in Sister Bay — one of their favorite sunset viewing locations — she knew he understood the assignment. “As long as he could have all the people he loved in one place, he was on board with Door County,” Lindsay said. “The peninsula holds a special place in my heart. Once you head north, it’s nothing but friendly faces, good times, stunning views — and endless cheese curds!”

Since many guests had not visited the county before, Lindsay focused on highlighting the quirky, charming elements that make Door County unique. She pulled inspiration from all around the peninsula — supper clubs, orchards, goats — with an empasis on cherries, which were used on invitations and signage, to top the cake and cherry gummy candies were given as guest favors. “My hope was that our wedding would give them a preview to all the amazing things about the peninsula,” Lindsay said. “And it worked: so many guests have told us that Door County has become a new vacation spot for their own families after attending our wedding!”

“I wanted to highlight the things that make Door County so special cherries, goats, a supper-club-vibe while elevating the beauty of our venue.”
Lindsay

Planning the event from 200 miles away came with its challenges, but the couple prioritized working with local vendors whenever possible, which helped make everything fall into place. “Lean into working with local vendors to support the community and bring the authentic regional charm into your day,” Lindsay said.

The sentimental ceremony was held on the lawn overlooking the water and they found ways to honor their faith while keeping the ceremony modern, personal and fun for guests.

Afterwards, they enjoyed an extended cocktail hour to give themselves time to greet guests. Before dinner they took a walk on the pier and popped a special bottle of champagne which a friend had hand-painted as a surprise for them. “It gave us a chance to reconnect and soak everything in for a moment and cheers to the start of the rest of our lives together,” Lindsay said.

When it comes to wedding planning, Linsday says “take note of the elements you’ve loved — or would change — from wedddings you’ve attended and keep those in mind. Consider the location of your wedding and try to make things as seamless as possible for your guests so they can truly relax and enjoy the experience. And most importantly, if you love something, go for it! Don’t let other people’s opinions steer you away from what feels right for you.”

so we kept it to siblings. We’re lucky that our brothers and sisters are some of our closest friends so keeping it simple felt right,” Tommy said.

Tommy surprised Lindsay with a handmade “shotski” that he had his friend make and bring from Minnesota. “It was a fun way to get the party going!” Lindsay said.

AN AISLE ADDITION

“I chose to have my mom and my dad walk me down the aisle,” Lindsay said. “They’re my best friends and I’ve always felt mothers can sometimes be overshadowed by traditional roles. Having them both by my side made it incredibly special for me.”

Sam and Ryan are originally from the same small village in Wisconsin, but didn’t end up meeting each other until they were both graduated from college and back in the area. Then, things started to fall into place for them, and in 2024 overlooking a beautiful waterfall in Iceland, they got engaged.

“We originally thought we would do a destination wedding, but we also have a lot of important people in our life we wanted to include, so Door County was the perfect option!” Ryan said. “Every year when we vacation to Door County, we always leave thinking ‘we could live here’ and we wanted to share that sentiment with all our loved ones.”

They also both had very similar visions of the wedding; they wanted to make sure that everyone important to them was there to celebrate, but also keep it as intimate as possible. “We both wanted a wedding that was fun, relaxed, and all about celebrating our bond,” Sam said. “I think our favorite Google search leading up to the wedding was something along the lines of ‘cozy fun wedding ideas.’”

“Neither of us would probably describe the other as overly formal or over-the-top. We wanted our wedding to be fun for not only us, but our nieces and nephews, loved ones, and best friends.”

Ryan

Getting family from across the country (and Mexico City) up to Door County was a bit of a process with navigating different airport options and transportation. “In the end, it all went off without a hitch and we are so thankful to have chosen Door County for our wedding,” Ryan said. Instead of a rehearsal dinner the night before the wedding, they opted to host a welcome party at Welcker’s Point inside the Peninsula State Park complete with pizza from Wild Tomato and s’mores for dessert. On the day of, they also kept it casual and spent the day together getting ready.

“Waiting to walk down the aisle together is one of our favorite memories. We hung out in the lower barn while all our guests arrived and were so excited seeing everyone there for us,” Ryan said. “Along with that, hugging all our guests after the ceremony in the beautiful backdrop of Woodwalk. The location, weather and company could not have been more perfect. Growing up, we never could have imagined this day becoming a reality, so it was such a blessing to have all our loved ones with us to celebrate. We are so lucky to have found Woodwalk — it truly made for the most beautiful and memorable day of our lives.”

Alexis & Keith

A Marriage in the Golden Hour Glow

Alexis and Keith met like many other modern day couples: via a dating app. Alexis had recently returned to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, after spending time in Florida and Keith was working in the city when they connected. They hit things off and Keith proposed on Memorial Day at Kadish Park in Milwaukee, the site of one of their early dates.

Once planning begun they each had their own asks: Keith wanted somewhere not in Milwaukee with a preference towards a barn-style event, while Alexis wanted something that felt effortless and for the weekend to feel like an intimate escape for their friends and family. Once they toured the Northern Haus (which they had discovered while helping plan a friend’s bachelorette party) they knew it was the perfect fit. Alexis is also an enrolled Forest County Potawatomi Tribal Member, which added another unique layer of meaning to hosting their event in the county.

NORTHERN HAUS, SISTER BAY

Door County also was a great location to not inconvenience both of their families for travel, with Alexis’ family coming from northern Wisconsin and Keith’s family coming from the Chicago area. “We also wanted a place we can visit frequently and take our future family,” Alexis said.

“Our top three most important event elements were food, floral and bar, and we wanted to ensure our guests didn’t have to worry about anything. From food allergies to transportation and accomodations — we wanted to make the wedding weekend as smooth as possible,” Alexis said. “Trusting someone to capture our vision was very hard for both of us as we are both pretty type-A people. Knowing when to be hands-on and hands-off was a learning curve we weren’t expecting! But at the end of the day, it’s about you and your partner. You won’t be able to control everything, but you can control your attitude and perspective on the situation.”

In the end the only thing they said they would change about their day was to make sure they were by each other’s side more throughout the night. One way they did that was by having a sweetheart table, as Alexis recalled “sitting next to each other at dinner and looking out at all those that love us was one of our favorite times of the day.”

“We knew we wanted to bring a warm, golden-hour of summer vibe to the wedding. Ultimately, our color pallete inspiration came from an Anthropologie rug!” Alexis

POTAWATOMI TRADITIONS

The couple incorporated a traditional blanket ceremony to signify their unity and Alexis’ cousin gave a prayer in Potawatomi to bless the food at dinner.

PLANNING POINTER

“We learned along the way that it was easier to keep planning decisions between us to avoid unecessary input, because at the end of the day, no one cares more about your wedding than you do,” Alexis said.

DESSERT DONE DIFFERENT

There was no cake cutting as both Alexis and Keith preferred other dessert options - opting for gelato from Door County Creamery.

The couple worked with Gracious events to bring in Chicago-style hot dogs for the late night food option.

Brianna & Ryan

An Intimate Island Ceremony & Vintage Cocktail Party

A dating app connected Brianna and Ryan in December of 2019, and they grew close quickly. A few months after meeting they found themselves faced with the 2020 pandemic, and it was a no brainer to quarantine together. They dated for close to two years and then — at the end of a family photoshoot at Christopher Farm’s in Sheboygan, Wisconsin — Ryan proposed. Several months later, Brianna proposed to Ryan at Kohler Andre State Park with her family and a photographer hidden down the beach.

“We planned probably 20 versions of our wedding. The original vision was to elope in New Zealand at a winery. We then wanted to do a big classic wedding at a museum, but every time we had to get down to the details we kept coming back to an intimate ceremony and cocktail party. After we realized this was what mattered most to us we knew Door County was the perfect place,” Brianna said.

“We wanted a small intimate ceremony in nature. We wanted our florals to be from a local farm, we wanted the feel to be romantic and warm.” The vision for the ceremony was to be casual, warm and a space where gathering and conversation could happen. A true cocktail party. “Our biggest priority was that we were able to share the day with each of our guests.”

“The inspiration was us, our relationship. If it passed the vibe check, it was included.”

With rain in the forecast, they kept umbrellas at the ready. “We were committed to being outside and I was so worried about my hair holding up,” Brianna said. “But walking down the aisle to Somewhere Over the Rainbow with the rain coming down was unforgettable.”

As for advice to couples considering Door County as a wedding destination, Brianna said, “it is worth the extra planning logistics! I loved the wedding as an excuse to make a few extra trips to the area. You can plan a budget friendly wedding in Door County despite what you hear.”

PLANNING SEASONALLY

“Starting to plan in the winter off-season can prove difficult, so make sure you start at least the summer before your event,” Brianna said. “I would also recommend planning where you will stay far in advance!”

Kate & Meg

HORSESHOE BAY BEACH CLUB, EGG HARBOR
An Upscale Celebration of Love on the Lakeshore

According to Meg, Katemet her at not quite her best moment: having recently undergone elbow surgery that led to a staph infection. “As my family would tell you, I’m not exactly the easiest patient during recovery. But that didn’t scare Kate off. Instead, she jumped right into the role of doting nurse — dressing my wound and sitting through every doctor’s appointment,” Meg said.

From then on, they were inseparable. Soon their two pups, Emmie and Ridges, became best friends and the four of them spent the next year and a half visiting each other between Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Lake Forest, Illinois. “I’ve spent my whole life waiting for someone like Kate — and when she came along, everything fell into place,” Meg said. “Being with her made everything feel right — like she’d always been meant to be here. I have never met a kinder soul, someone with quicker wit or a more genuinely thoughtful human. She has a gift for making everyone she meets feel seen and valued.”

“In many ways, the short timeline was both a blessing and a curse; it forced us to make decisions quickly, without overthinking or second-guessing, and ultimately helped us trust our instincts.”

Meg

The couple’s initial vision was an intimate tented wedding surrounded by flowers, soft lighting and a palette of gentle, muted tones to highlight the natural beauty of the surroundings. However, they were on a tight timeline; with just three and a half months to plan, their options were limited, especially for the band. Fortunately, a last-minute cancellation worked in their favor, allowing them to book a full band from Chicago with incredible reviews.

“One of the best decisions we made was hiring a wedding planner who lives in Door County. Carrie (of Door County Event Planners) seamlessly handled so many details that Kate and I couldn’t manage from a distance. We felt confident in her recommendations, which allowed us to enjoy the planning process instead of stressing over the logistics,” Meg said. They wanted family to be a centerpiece of the event and chose to have both sets of parents walk each of them down the aisle. Meg had her brother and best friend as her Best Man and Maid of Honor respectively saying, “I wanted the people who mean the most to me by my side, regardless of tradition.” Kate had her twin sister and best friend as her bridesmaids, and their nieces and nephews served as

flower girls and ring bearer. “Kate’s brother and sister shared readings that spoke deeply to us as a couple, making the ceremony feel personal, intimate and full of love.”

The brides also revised tradition and got ready together with their bridal party to experience the morning side by side, but then seperated during the final stages of getting ready to save the moment for their first look. “It took place on the rocks of Lake Michigan, with our two dogs running in at the perfect moment for a few unforgettable photos!” Meg said.

“The fireworks were the perfect fairytale ending. Seeing the sky light up together felt like the perfect celebration of our love, a breathtaking capstone to a day we’ll cherish forever.”

“The most unforgettable moment of the day for both of us was seeing each other walk down the aisle” Kate said. “It was the culmination of finding the right person and celebrating that love surrounded by our family and friends.”

Another favorite moment of the day was sitting and listening to the speeches and taking a pause to look around at the intimate group of people gathered for them. “All of our favorite people in one room — it was a quiet, grounding moment that made us feel incredibly lucky and grateful,” Meg said.

A SURPRISE IN THE SKY

“Kate surprised me with a grand fireworks display at the end of the night. Fireworks have always felt magical to me, and seeing a show put together just for us and our guests was unforgettable. It was the perfect cherry on top of our wedding day—a breathtaking, joyful moment that capped off a day full of love, laughter and celebration,” Meg said.

HAVE TUNNEL VISION

“The best advice we received was to remember that the day was about Kate and me,” Meg said. “By focusing on our own vision and doing things our unique way, we were able to create a celebration that truly reflected us — what we wanted to feel, see and taste on our special day.”

SENTIMENTAL LOCALE

On choosing Door County: “From its stunning shores to its quaint shops, warm locals and breathtaking sunsets, the area creates a natural backdrop that needs little enhancement,” Kate said. “For us, it’s more than a location — it’s a place that holds memories, joy and the promise of returning to again and again as our special place.”

INTImaTE WEDDINGS

Weddings with smaller guest counts have unique benefits: added time spent with guests, a more flexible budget and having more venue options. Here’s a peek at how three couples planned their own unique events.

DaWN & JoHN

Dawn and John both had previously been married and experienced large wedding celebrations, which led them to desire a small ceremony with only family and friends. “We wanted the day to focus on our union of becoming husband and wife,” Dawn said. “We imagined our wedding in the fall with the ceremony being in a small church or chapel, our guests enjoying a delicious dinner with desserts to follow, and we wanted everyone to enjoy the gorgeous fall colors and a couple days of relaxation with a lake view.”

When they started planning, they were not set on a specific date, which ended up being helpful for planning with vendors. “We had four dates picked out and as planning progressed, our second favorite date became our wedding date,” Dawn said.

PRaIRIE INSPIRED

“We are both Little House on the Prairie fans and a lot of our vision was inspired by the show,” said Dawn.

aNNElISE & JaNSEN

While Annelise and Jansen met in Verona, Wisconsin, dated long distance while Jansen finished his doctoral program in Colorado, and now live in South Dakota — they share fond childhood memories of visiting Door County with their respective families.

After a trip to Door County in the summer of 2022, they knew they wanted to have their wedding ceremony at Boynton Chapel, Björklunden, due to its beauty and simplicity. “We knew it had minimal seating capacity, so we would have to keep our guest list small. This also enabled us to spend time with each of our guests so they felt appreciated,” Annelise said.

“Our vision was Art Nouveau, whimsical academia and nature themes.” For decor, symbolic books were incorporated into centerpiece displays and table names and guests were invited to participate in a book swap. In addition to a traditional wedding cake they also had a fully fruit cake built from a watermelon base.

a TRaDITI oN ToSSED

Instead of a garter toss, Jansen invited all adult guests to participate in a “whiskey box toss,” where the catcher received a bottle of scotch at the end of the reception.

a NoD To loVE

The couple wore custom wedding hats from Greeley Hat Works with their vows inside. Annelise got additional bridal detailing on her hat from McLaughlin & Hayes Hat Co. in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

RoSES FoR all

Instead of a bouquet toss, Annelise gave a rose to all of the guests who wanted one, as a statement that all women have value, whether they are married or not. Everyone’s journey deserves respect, and not everyone wants to get married.

m EGaN & JUSTIN

Both Megan and Justin loved Door County seperately as a favorite vacation destination. After they began dating, their first trip together was to camp in Baileys Harbor and they’ve continued to visit often. Once engaged, a small event was always the plan; “we always planned for a wedding with only our closest friends and family,” said Megan. With the help of their planner, Shannon Mead, “everything was perfect. It was like my Pinterest Board came to life!”

GoING THE DISTaNCE

“Living in Milwaukee was the hardest part,” Megan said. “We had to plan vendor visits ahead of time so we just made little weekends out of it anytime we were going to meet the wedding planner. But honestly she made everything so easy!”

CooKoUT THEm E

They adapted elements to fit their backyard cookout vibes: they rented string lights and had Steel Belly BBQ from Algoma, Wisconsin. Megan’s best friend made a playlist, they served artisan gelato cups instead of cake and their featured drinks were wine slushes and old fashioneds, which were a hit. Plus, their collie, Wrigley, acted as a ring bearer.

“Being alone in Peninsula State Park before the wedding to do our private vows was my favorite moment for Justin and I,” Megan said. “We were able to have time together to just enjoy the moment.”

THE AUGUSTA CLUB, BAILEYS HARBOR

August 23, 2025 Alexandra & Ahmad

A Funky & Cultural Supper Club Celebration

Alexandra and Ahmad met while she was home for the holidays in Austin, Texas. They began dating long distance until Ahmad made the move to New York City, where they still reside. While celebrating her 30th birthday in Paris, France, Ahmad proposed to an unsuspecting Alexandra.

Alexandra has known the peninsula because her grandparents have been summering in Door County all her life and then retired in Sister Bay. “It’s my happy place,” Alexandra said. “I love doing cold plunges, bike rides and

spending time with family. It’s Ahmad’s happy place now too.”

They prioritized choosing the right venue and having great music. “We knew those two things would set the tone,” Alexandra said. The Augusta Club made their vision come to life. “We loved the juxtaposition of a daytime outdoor ceremony and cocktail hour followed by the moody, romantic vibe for the Augusta Club for dinner and dancing,” And as for the music, “we wanted to take guests on a journey: blues at cocktail hour to honor our Texas roots, international jazz at dinner and a mix of disco, Arabic and Spanish music at the reception.” When planning, Alexandra said “start earlier than you think and find vendors who share your values and understand your vision. It makes all the difference on the day of. No stress, just trust!”

PRESENCE OVER PERFORMANCE

“We didn’t have a wedding party because we just wanted our loved ones to simply sit and be present,” explained Alexandra. “Plus, I wanted my friends to wear whatever made them feel fabulous and confident. I love fashion and I wanted everyone to have fun with their looks.”

VINTAGE QUALITY

“On Sunday evening while saying goodbye to loved ones we heard many say “we’ll be back!”

Seeing our friends fall in love with this place too made me emotional and grateful.”

“We love the quality and experience of shopping vintage, and since we live in one of the best places for it, we wanted to incorporate that into our wedding day,” explained Alexandra. “I wore a 1990’s raw silk dress and an early 20th century veil from Gossamer. Ahmad wore a vintage tuxedo from Crowly Vintage in Brooklyn.”

FAVORITE MOMENTS

Outside of the ceremony, Alexandra had a few favorite moments: “Jumping off the dock in Sister Bay with my parents the morning of, picture-perfect weather for the cocktail hour, our dads giving toasts and doing the dabke with our families!” The dabke is a traditional Lebanese dance performed at celebrations, where dancers hold hands and follow a leader at the front through synchronized, repeated foot patterns marked by rhythmic stomping.

DJ TURN IT UP

The couple worked with Ahmad’s cousin who DJs in New York City to curate a playlist that represented their lives and families — from childhood Spanish songs, disco classics, traditional Lebanese music and more.

OLD POTATO FARM, WASHINGTON ISLAND

Chelsea’s grandparents came to Washington Island in the 1970’s and since then members of her family have been coming to the island every summer. “We’re lucky enough to be able to enjoy my aunt and uncle’s house on the west side of the island,” Chelsea said. When Chelsea and JJ reconnected in Chicago and soon after began dating, he became part of the family’s summer pilgrammage as well.

“We got engaged in March 2023 in front of my grandparents’ memorial bench on Schoolhouse Beach. The ground was still covered in snow and I did not want to get out of the car with JJ to walk down to the water. He insisted I come with him, and I’m glad I did. We celebrated with beers at Middle Bar and lots of phone calls to our friends and family,” recalled Chelsea. They both knew that they wanted to host their wedding on the island, and soon hired local planner Rachel, of Pink Door Events, to help bring their vision to life. “Our wedding planner was the best decision we made. She connected us with appropriate vendors and ensured that we had nothing to stress about on the dayof.”

In terms of a vision: “I wanted something inspired by the 1960’s and

A FERRY CROSSING BUDGET

“It would be an understatement to say we underestimated the cost of getting all of our vendors to the island,” Chelsea said. Planning to include the additional travel cost of ferry crossings for an island event is a necessary piece of the puzzle if you choose Washington Island as your host destination.

classic Door County iconography. My Pinterest was full of pictures of vintage cocktail napkins, Audrey Hepburn and outdoor garden parties,” Chelsea explained. Many of the design elements from the wedding were icons any visitor to Door County or the island would recognize. The red and white stripe motif was inspired by the awning at Wilson’s Restaurant and the Cherry Train. The escort cards were handmade pull-tabs. Each dinner table was assigned an island icon: cherries, sandhill cranes, trout, daisies or stars. For the invitations, Chelsea painted a scene of the island’s daisy-spotted fields and moonlit pine trees. And rather than traditional champagne, they made their own mini bitters bottles to toast with.

“Our guests traveled hours on trains, planes, automobiles and ferries to get to an island in Wisconsin to celebrate with us, so it was important that every element felt specific and personal,” Chelsea said. “JJ created both of our signature cocktails, with one being named after our dog, Clementine. I designed our website, and made sure to include old family photos on the island and photos of JJ’s family on summer vacations. JJ’s mom, Jone, graciously volunteered to embroider our guests’ names on their dinner napkins, and little cherries on all of the cocktail napkins. Everything was made with so much love.”

EMBRACE THE AUTHENTICITY

“Door County is not a Parisian hotel, or a Californian vineyard — don’t try and make it one. It’s a place with so much natural beauty and its own, unique culture. It’s home to a thriving creative community and so many kind people. Try and take advantage of it all,” Chelsea recommended.

DOUBLE DUTY DRESS

For the day before their wedding, Chelsea wore a beaded Aya Muse dress, and for her wedding day she wore her grandma’s wedding dress from 1961 followeed by a Prea James mini dress at the reception.

ALIGNED TIMELINES

When it comes to advice, Chelsea recommends setting a schedule for yourself that allows for plenty of wiggle room. “I designed and executed almost all of the paper projects for the wedding myself,” Chelsea said. “And while I do not regret it, I wish I would have set a more forgiving schedule for myself and, more importantly, stuck to it!”

IMPORTING REQUIRED

“There are so many wonderful businesses and beautiful locations on the island, but we still had to import from the mainland,” Chelsea said. “I was desperate to get a sailcloth tent and the closest one available was in Madison, Wisconsin. JJ and I both wanted a meal that was prepared on-site, and we tasked Rachel with finding a caterer willing to cook outside, on the Island. We got a few no’s before landing on Crave Cuisine — and lucky we did — the food and service was excellent.”

ALL ABOARD

Renting the Cherry Train for the wedding party was a non-negotiable for Chelsea. “My sister and I never got to ride the Cherry Train as children,” she said. “My wedding day was our chance and I’m so happy it worked out. Riding the train around the island after the ceremony was so fun. We got to romp in a field of flowers and take bitters shots at Nelsen’s Hall Bitters Pub with our friends... I will never forget that.”

CHERRIES EVERYWHERE

There were Door County cherries everywhere: the napkins, the invites, the dessert which JJ’s mom, Jone, made — a sour cherry küchens based on a family recipe.

“I

spent an enormous amount of time designing a visual language for our wedding that could translate some the Island’s magic for our guests.”

W inter Season Weddings

Once the leaves fall and temperatures drop, Door County adapts to a slower pace, offering couples an opportunity to plan an event that doesn’t compete with the crowds or busy calendars. Here are three couples that embraced the off-season as the perfect time to bring their families together and celebrate their marriage.

WINTER WARMTH

“I have always wanted a winter wedding!” Klara said. “I wanted a warm, cozy unique atmosphere. We decided on early January in hopes of a good winter snow, which unfortunately did not happen, but despite this, our photographer Luke was able to give us photos with the perfect winter look we wanted!”

CENTERING FAITH

“We wanted a traditional Catholic wedding ceremony as our Catholic faith is the pillar and center of our marriage and life,” Klara said. They are active members of the Stella Maris Catholic Church and wanted to include their priest in their ceremony.

SAVORING THE MOMENT

Having worked at Thyme Restuarant and Catering for many seasons, it was an easy decision for Klara to choose to host their reception there. “I had been looking forward to one of Thyme’s filets from the beginning of my wedding planning process!”

Thyme was also helpful in navigating Jerry’s allergies to gluten and dairy for the dinner and for their wedding cake. “They made the most delicious cake within those restrictions,” Klara said.

To start the day Klara savored a sandwich and coffee from Blue Horse Beach Cafe while getting her hair and makeup done. “(As a caterer) I have seen too many brides not have time to eat, but our wedding was so relaxed I got to savor all of the fun little moments.”

INNER CIRCLE ONLY

To ensure a stress-free day, the couple only included their closest friends and family and decided to not have their photographer attend the reception. “We wanted to keep the reception relaxed and intimate. We instead had one of Jerry’s sisters take Polaroids throughout the evening,” Klara said.

FUN & GAMES

“Both of our families play a lot of board games, and it is one of our favorite activities, so rather than dancing, we played games throughout the evening,” said Klara. “Our favorite board game is Ascension, but we really like playing anything!”

HOMEGROWN ROOTS

Laina grew up in Green Bay and Curtis grew up in Sister Bay and graduated from Gibraltar High School. The couple met after being introduced through a mutual friend at Poh’s Corner Pub in Sturgeon Bay. Having chosen Sturgeon Bay as their current home, and with family in the area, it only made sense to celebrate their wedding in the county.

A SLOWER PACE

“Curtis is a chef and I am a hairstylist, so needless to say, summer is pretty busy for both of us living in Door County,” Laina said. “We thought early November would still capture some of that fall magic.”

WEATHER OR NOT

“Really, the only hard thing was not knowing if it would be warm or dry enough to have photos outside. The rest of the wedding was all planned indoors so the weather wasn’t a big concern,” said Laina.

MEANINGFUL MOMENTS

The most memorable moments for Curtis included: Having coffee in the morning and thinking about marrying Laina, having bourbon with his groomsmen before the ceremony and seeing his wife for the first time during their ‘first look.’

For Laina it was: Dancing with her bridesmaids before the ceremony, walking down the aisle seeing Curtis tearing up, and being surrounded by all of their loved ones. “I loved dancing with my nieces on the dance floor,” Laina said. “I also loved that Curtis and I decided to end the night with a slow song so we could have one last slow dance together.”

PLANNING PRIORITIES

When it comes to planning advice, Laina recommends taking care of the big things first, so time can be spent with all the smaller details. “My favorite part of the planning process was the smaller DIY things that really felt personal to us,” Laina said. “Also, trust your vendors! The vendors in Door County are amazing and know what they are doing. It was so exciting watching all of them come in and do what they do! Door County truly is a magical place. The scenery, the coziness, and the incredible people are what make it feel so special.”

CLOSE TO HOME

When Northern Haus was being built in 2019 five minutes from where Helen grew up, she told her parents that’s where she wanted to get married one day. Later, when Nick came into her life via an introduction through a mutual friend, the stars aligned. Nick fell in love with the area alongside falling for Helen, and with her deep family roots here it was an easy decision to choose to host their wedding here.

FIVE RINGS OF HELEN

A MEANINGFUL MARCH

“We got engaged in March on a ski trip, and when Northern Haus had a March date available, it felt like the perfect full-circle moment,” Helen said. “March can look like winter or the very first signs of spring, and we honestly didn’t know which weather we would get. However, the venue and area are so beautiful that it didn’t matter what it would be like outside.”

Family was at the heart of the day, so incorporating heirlooms and generational touches became the perfect way to honor tradition in a personalized way. The most special example was the collection of “Five Rings of Helen,” representing engagement and wedding rings passed down from the bride’s great-grandmothers, great-aunt and Nicholas’ great-grandmother Helen’s ring as part of this tradition. It was a beautiful, symbolic connection between the two families and a legacy they are proud to continue.

COMMUNITY CARE

“If you have ties to Door County, lean into them. And if you don’t, you’ll still find that people are genuinely kind and want to help make your day amazing. The community really shows up,” Helen said. “My biggest advice is to choose what feels right for you as a couple. Door County is beautiful in every season, and your day will reflect that. Trust the process, enjoy the little moments and let the area work its magic.”

GUESTBOOK BOARD

During their first year dating, Nick helped Helen relearn to snowboard. “It really made me fall in love with him, because it required a lot of patience,” Helen said. Later, during a ski trip to Lake

The Griffin Inn 920-868-8168 thegriffininndoorco.com contact@thegriffininn.com

The Griffin Inn, as it was once known, has a rich and interesting history beginning around 1872. First as a home, then in 1910 as an Inn, the way you’ll find it today. Families would travel from places such as Chicago, first by sail, then on steam ships, to spend their Summer near water with Nature. More than just cherished old buildings, behold the lovely gardens and grounds she’s nestled on… The Griffin Inn is quintessential old Door County. Over a 150 years of history and memories to build upon; still in her original form, emblematic of things as they once were, a witness as to why so many of us love Door County! So, what is the Griffin Inn today? A unique venue for you, your family and friends to experience together your most special days; wedding, rehearsal, reception, a bonjour brunch… How about a chance glimpse at the Northern Lights? We’re the only venue, in the last Dark Sky region, in Door County. Give us a call or better still, come take a look.
