Celebrating the Impact of Tourism in Our Community

As we move into May, there is a renewed sense of energy across Door County. Shops and restaurants are reopening for the season, boats are returning to the marinas, and communities throughout the peninsula are preparing to welcome visitors once again. For many of us who live and work here year-round, this time of year is about more than just the start of the tourism season. It is a reflection of the pride we take in our communities and the shared effort that goes into making Door County such a special place.

That community pride is on full display every year as local businesses, nonprofit organizations, municipalities, and residents work together to create the welcoming atmosphere that our seasonal residents and visitors have come to know and appreciate. Whether it’s maintaining our parks and shorelines, hosting festivals and events, or simply offering friendly service to guests, the success of Door County’s visitor economy is truly a community-wide effort.

The impact of that effort is significant. In 2024, visitors to Door County generated more than $651 million in total economic impact, supporting over 3,500 jobs across the county. Just as important, the state and local taxes generated by visitor spending help offset the cost of essential services for residents, reducing the tax burden on local households.

That is one of the reasons destinations across the country — including right here

in Door County — will be celebrating National Travel & Tourism Week from May 3–9. This annual recognition is an opportunity to thank the many individuals who contribute to our local economy and quality of life, from frontline hospitality workers and small business owners to volunteers, community leaders, and residents who help create memorable experiences for our guests.

At Destination Door County, our work is guided by a simple principle: tourism should strengthen our community while preserving the character and natural beauty that make this place home. Our strategic plan reflects that commitment by focusing on economic vitality, collaboration, and stewardship, ensuring that the benefits of tourism continue to support local businesses, sustain jobs, and enhance quality of life for residents across the peninsula.

A key driver of our collective success is the dedicated community of local tourism professionals who work tirelessly each day to ensure Door County continues to thrive. To provide greater insight into the individuals working together for the county’s shared prosperity, we invite you to meet these leaders on the inside pages of this publication, representing Destination Door County, our Community Business Associations, and the Door County Tourism Zone.

As we look ahead to the upcoming season, even with all that is happening in the world, there is every reason to feel optimistic. With strong partnerships, dedicated local businesses, and a community that takes pride in welcoming visitors, Door County is well positioned for another successful year — one that continues to support our economy and strengthen the place we all call home.

Free Accessibility Assessments Available for Door County Businesses This May

Destination Door County (DDC), in partnership with Wheel the World, is inviting local businesses to participate in a second round of free accessibility assessments taking place in mid-June.

The program was first launched last fall, with 40 Door County locations participating in professional assessments and gaining visibility on Wheel the World’s global platform.

Businesses selected for this next round will receive a visit from a trained mapper, who will document existing accessibility features such as wheelchair access, visual and auditory

accommodations, and other inclusive elements.

The assessment is completely free, voluntary, and strictly informational. It is not an ADA compliance audit.

Participating businesses don’t need to be fully accessible. The goal is transparency, helping businesses clearly communicate what they offer to potential visitors while identifying opportunities for improvement.

Businesses that take part will receive: A free private accessibility assessment

with suggestions for improvement

The Accessibility Verified Seal

Access to a one-hour staff training through Wheel the World Academy

In addition, participating locations will be featured on Wheel the World’s global platform, increasing visibility among travelers seeking accessible experiences.

This initiative continues to build toward a more inclusive Door County.

I joined Destination Door County in 2008 after relocating to the area. What motivated you to become part of your organization?

Carlsville only has 10 businesses and we don’t offer a full-time position to be the community coordinator due to our size, so when I saw the need for Carlsville to become more involved in the grand scheme of Door County, I talked to my boss at Door County Coffee and she agreed and the rest is history. I love showing people what makes Carlsville so special.

What motivated you to become part of your organization?

Southern Door is home. I grew up here, went to school here...and ultimately, when I moved away to attend college for a few years, I realized Door County is where I want to spend the rest of my life. I care deeply about the community, traditions and people.

What’s one of your favorite things about your community?

I’ve loved Sister Bay since visiting my grandparents who lived here throughout my childhood, and even more so since moving here six years ago. What drew me to SBAA was its focus on making Sister Bay an amazing place to live, work, and visit — and I wanted to be part of that.

What’s one of your favorite things about your community?

The people. Since moving to Sister Bay, I’ve met so many of the amazing people who make up this community. Everyone here is kind, willing to help, and up for fun.

Sara Lancaster Membership & Office Manager –Visit Fish Creek

What motivated you to become part of your organization?

Not long after launching our business, OneEighty Petals, in 2017, my husband John and I joined Visit Fish Creek at the encouragement of longtime community figure Digger DeGroot. Through my work nearby, I saw firsthand the support, connection, and creativity the organization brought to local businesses—and joining was one of the best decisions we made. In 2023, after stepping away from a full-time role to focus on family and our business, a conversation with Meredith Coulson-Kanter led me to the Membership and Office Manager role. It’s been a natural fit, allowing me to use my background in communications and marketing to support and stay connected to the community I love.

What’s one of your favorite things about your community?

It looks and feels like nowhere else—while somehow being in the heart of everything. It is also home to some of the hardest working, most community-minded people I’ve ever met. It’s special and unlike anywhere else I’ve ever lived or visited.

The Baileys Harbor Community Association and the Washington Island Chamber of Commerce are also valued Community Business Association partners, but were not included due to timing constraints.

Regenerative Coffee Cup Campaign Launches May 1

Destination Door County, in collaboration with local partners, is excited to launch a new sustainability pilot program: the Regenerative Coffee Cup Campaign.

Running May 1–31, this initiative will take place at Kick Ash in Ellison Bay and focuses on reducing waste by replacing traditional coffee cups with compostable bamboo alternatives. Even more importantly, the program “closes the loop” by collecting used cups and ensuring they are composted locally.

“Chris and I, along with our entire team, are truly excited to be part of this meaningful collaboration,” said Carol Ash, co-owner of Kick Ash. “At Kick Ash, our

guiding values are the three C’s—Community, Connection, and Collaboration—and this opportunity aligns beautifully with our mission. We’re grateful to work alongside such impactful organizations in our community and look forward to what we can accomplish together.”

Getting Room Tax Reporting Right: A Guide for Lodging Owners and Managers

Room tax is a mechanism to fund tourism promotion and development, balance community interests, and provide business accountability and fairness in Door County. Local governments rely on these taxes to fund tourism, infrastructure, and public services. For property owners and managers, ensuring accurate reporting is not just a legal obligation, but a critical part of running a trustworthy operation.

Understanding Room Tax

reconciliation process helps catch errors early and ensures filings match actual sales. In the event of an audit, documentation is your best defense. Keep copies of filed returns, payment confirmations, exemption certificates, and detailed booking records for all rentals.

Know Your Filing Deadlines

Room tax—sometimes called lodging tax or transient occupancy tax—is a passthrough tax collected from short-term guests and remitted to the Door County Tourism Zone for distribution amongst municipalities and Destination Door County. The taxes are charged to the guest, not the lodging provider. However, lodging providers and/or managers are required to pass the room tax payments and reporting to the correct entities in an accurate and timely manner.

Track Every Booking Carefully

Accurate reporting starts with detailed recordkeeping. Every reservation should include check-in and check-out dates, nightly rates, fees, and exemptions if applicable. Even if you use a property management system to automate this process, check transactions to ensure reservation records are captured consistently and accurately.

Separate Taxable and Non-Taxable Charges

Not all charges are subject to room tax. The most frequent mistake made by lodging providers and managers is completing room tax reports based on net income instead of the total sale. Room tax is applied to the total lodging cost paid by the guest, not the net amount which reaches the lodging provider’s bank account. Cleaning fees, guest service fees, additional guest fees, and pet fees, for example, are all taxable fees that need to be included in room tax reports as a portion of total lodging sales. Clearly separating taxable room revenue from non-taxable income helps prevent overpayment—or worse, underpayment that could lead to penalties and interest.

Reconcile Monthly Reports

Before submitting a room tax return, lodging providers and managers need to reconcile reported revenue against booking records. Discrepancies can arise from cancellations, refunds, or Marketplace Provider fees. A monthly

The Tourism Zone requires monthly room tax reports to be submitted for each month the lodging property is permitted. The deadline is the final day of the following month (ie March room tax reports are due April 30th). Setting calendar reminders or using accounting software with compliance alerts can help ensure timely submissions. Missing a filing deadline can result in penalties, interest charges, or audits. Additionally, if a lodging property is advertising and/or renting for months outside of what is listed on their permit, those months can be added to the reports required with additional interest and penalties applied.

Leverage Automation and Professional Help

Many online booking platforms collect and remit certain taxes on behalf of hosts—but do not complete property reporting and may not always pay all taxes. Don’t assume full compliance without verifying what is covered.

Accounting software tailored for hospitality businesses can simplify calculations and reporting but must also be checked for accuracy. For added assurance, consider working with a tax professional familiar with lodging regulations.

Stay Proactive Tax compliance isn’t a one-time task. Regular internal reviews and occasional consultations with experts can help ensure ongoing accuracy. If a reporting mistake is found, contact the Tourism Zone as quickly as possible.

Communicating with the Zone before errors are discovered by staff and pursued for compliance issues goes a long way.

The Bottom Line Room tax reporting may seem like a small administrative task, but errors can carry significant consequences. By staying organized, informed, and proactive, property owners and managers can avoid costly mistakes and contribute fairly to Door County and its operations.

many cups are distributed and how many are returned for composting, helping to build a scalable, data-driven model for expanding sustainable business practices across Door County.

This collaborative effort includes support from the Climate Change Coalition of Door County, Door County North, and Mighty Wind Farms.

Visitors and locals alike are encouraged to participate by returning their cups for composting and supporting businesses committed to caring for Door County’s natural beauty and long-term sustainability. Together, we’re turning small actions into meaningful impact—one cup at a time. #carefordoorcounty
