Shaping Your Summer Soundtrack

I

t’s easy to overlook the score of your favorite film. But music is what makes so many movie moments memorable – from the creepy dance scene in The Silence of the Lambs, set to Q Lazzarus’ “Goodbye Horses,” to the ending explosions of Fight Club, set to The Pixies’ “Where Is My Mind?” In some cases – think Pulp Fiction or Boogie Nights – the music makes the movie, contributing to the “feel” of it as much as the plot and characters do. Real life doesn’t come with background music. There are no tense strings to warn you that bad news is coming, or sad piano to indicate this is the last

time you’re going to see someone. For better or worse, it’s up to you to create the soundtrack to your life. But even off-screen, the right song at the right time can feel downright cinematic. Think hearing the opening notes of the first dance at a wedding, or flipping to the perfect breakup song on the radio when you need a good cry. Better yet, think of that moment at a concert when all you can register are the lyrics you’re singing along to and the heavy beat of drums you can feel in your chest. You’ll have plenty of chances to chase that feeling this summer. In your hands is a live music

schedule that goes through the end of July. In addition to the dates and times are performance highlights, venue details, weekly music offerings, festival information and the scoop on the county’s resident classical-music groups. An August music preview published later will cover the remaining dates of the season. Here’s to a summer of music that feels like something out of a movie. – Sam Watson, Summer Music Preview editor
