Before I climbed up behind my husband and began riding with him, I knew absolutely nothing about riding. Oh, there was a lot I thought I knew, but the only thing I really did know was that I had no experience riding and I didn’t know anyone who did. All I thought about bikers and biking was what I had either seen on television (which is an incredibly bad teacher) or what I had assumed. Neither of those sources of “information” prepared me to get on a bike. My husband gave me plenty of instructions, but some things you have to actually do in order to learn them. While I may still be new to riding, I have passed the first blush of physical youth. I suspect that some of the nuances of riding that I have to work hard to achieve probably come more naturally to a younger rider. Riding behind someone on a bike looks so easy, but I learned the hard way that, for me at least, it takes work and practice. And attention. A LOT of attention. One of the most embarrassing struggles I have while riding with my husband has to do with, I suppose, my ability to balance. I can stay on the bike, no problem. What I can’t seem to do is hold myself in my seat tight enough to avoid the front of my helmet colliding with the back of my husband’s helmet. I’m better at it than I used to be, but it’s still a challenge for me. It usually happens when I let my attention wander. While my mind is off in the clouds, I miss the cues that tell me the bike is slowing down faster than I am. I forget to hold myself in place and crack! My face shield taps the back of my husband’s helmet and the noise of it reverberates in my head. I’ve often wondered why my husband has never commented on it.

One day while riding, I was once again inattentive because I was looking at scenery. This time when we came to a quick stop, I was turned slightly in my seat. The side of my helmet (instead of my face shield) hit the back of my husband’s helmet…and I barely heard a click. My face shield, because it is by necessity thinner, suffers a greater impact in those little collisions than the side of my helmet did that day. The thicker helmet protects me more than the face shield. There’s a lesson in there for us. Many times the mistakes we make (sins, actually, if you want to call it what it is) begin with something we see or hear. The suggestions (temptations, really) come through our “face shield.” Even though a face shield provides some protection, it has to be thin in order for us to see through it. And it’s that stuff that gets through it that can get us in trouble. Story & Photos:

Our eyes and ears are windows by which our enemy (the devil) will seek entry into our hearts and minds. They are assaulted by more sin and temptation than other parts of our bodies. Often the sin we commit with our bodies begins with something we see or hear. Even though as followers of Christ we wear the helmet of salvation, we have to be careful what we allow past our “face shield.” We have to be careful about what we watch and keep alert to what we allow within our hearing. It all has an impact. Make sure it’s a good one. I know helmets are a matter of debate for bikers. Some prefer them. Some merely comply with the law to keep out of trouble. Some go for the half helmet. Some choose to ride without one at all. That’s all well and good. Your life, your brain, your choice.

You also have a choice on whether you wear the helmet of salvation (yep,there’s a helmet in the Bible). However, choosing not to wear this helmet will cost you even more on the other side of eternity than not wearing one could physically cost you when you ride on this side. Never heard of the helmet of salvation? No worries. It’s part of the armor God gives us for the battles we face. Why the armor? Because we are at war, folks. But this war isn’t fought in the world we see. It’s fought in the one we can’t see. That’s why our armor is spiritual, because so is the battle.

“In conclusion be strong—not in yourselves but in the Lord, in the power of his boundless resource. Put on God’s complete armour so that you can successfully resist all the devil’s methods of attack. For our fight is not against any physical enemy: it is against organisations and powers that are spiritual. We are up against the unseen power that controls this dark world, and spiritual agents from the very headquarters of evil. Therefore you must wear the whole armour of God that you may be able to resist evil in its day of power, and that even when you have fought to a standstill you may still stand your ground. Take your stand then with truth as your belt, righteousness your breastplate, the Gospel of peace firmly on your feet, salvation as your helmet and in your hand the sword of the Spirit, the Word of God. Above all be sure you take faith as your shield, for it can quench every burning missile the enemy hurls at you. Pray at all times with every kind of spiritual prayer, keeping alert and persistent as you pray for all Christ’s men and women.” Ephesians 6:10-18 PHILLIPS

hoice I could break down all the parts of the armor God gives us for the battles we face, but let’s focus on that helmet: salvation. That’s a big word, but the gift it stands for is even bigger. It cost Jesus His life. Do you think He would have died for it if it wasn’t important for you to have it? “God Himself made the way so you can have new life through Christ Jesus. God gave us Christ to be our wisdom. Christ made us right with God and set us apart for God and made us holy. Christ bought us with His blood and made us free from our sins.” 1 Corinthians 1:30 NLV We have a choice about how we ride in this life, but our choice has consequences. Maybe the word “salvation” leaves a bad taste in your mouth because of past experiences, but trust me that hell is going to leave a worse one, and it will leave it forever. Don’t let your past make your choices for you. Trust God. Admit you need His helmet. He wants to give it to you, but He won’t make you take it. It’s your life, your choice…for now. Make it while you still have time. “Seek the LORD while He may be found; Call on Him [for salvation] while He is near.” Isaiah 55:6 AMP “If you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Romans 10:9 CSB”

Over 600,000 miles since my first Sturgis Rally. I’m so grateful of my Sturgis family. I have been coming to the rally since 2003. It’s a great place to talk about the heroes I ride for. Especially my brother Michael killed on 9/11. I will never forget him and that day.

Wyatt’s story started in 2020 when he was 7 years old. He set up a roadside lemonade stand during the Sturgis Rally off I-90 in Piedmont, SD. All he wanted was to earn enough money to buy a Lego set. The lemonade was free but he accepted donations. He quickly surpassed his goal and raised enough for the Legos so he decided to donate his earnings on several charities and save for college. Wyatt has donated to St. Jude, Mission 22, Piedmont Fire, Western Hills Humane Society and many others. This year, Wyatt’s 2026 donation will be over $14,000 once all monies are received and accounted for. This will bring his 7 year total donations to over $133,000...amazing!!!

Ohio’s Triple Nickle: Scenery Worth Slowing Down For As much as the road gets your attention, the countryside makes you want to stop and take it in. The route winds past quiet farms, thick woods, pastures, streams, and small communities where life still seems to move at a backroad pace. Ohio State Route 555—better known to riders as the Triple Nickle—is not a lazy Sunday cruise. Running roughly from Zanesville down toward Little Hocking, this ribbon of pavement rolls through southeastern Ohio’s Appalachian foothills with enough tight turns, blind rises, and quick elevation changes to keep both hands honest from start to finish. That is exactly why riders talk about it. One minute you’re crossing open farm country, the next you’re diving into a shaded bend or cresting a hill where the road asks for your full attention. The Triple Nickle has a reputation for being fun, scenic, and a little unforgiving—in other words, the kind of road that rewards riders who respect it.

Chesterhill is also home to the Triple Nickle Diner, a nice local stop that I previously wrote about in a “Ride to Eat” article for my blog, ijustwant2ride.com. It is the kind of place that fits the rhythm of a day ride: park the bike, stretch your legs, grab a bite, and talk about the road with whoever asks where you’re headed.

Respect the Road > Plan ahead. Services are limited once you get rolling, so top off the tank before you commit to the ride. Make sure the bike is ready, bring water, and pack a snack or two if you plan to take your time.

> Ride within your comfort zone. The road throws curves, hills, blind rises, and changing pavement at you. Some turns appear right at the top of a hill, so keep your eyes up, stay loose, and do not let the road talk you into riding faster than you should. And yes, pay attention for “road apples.” This is rural Ohio, and the Amish communities along the route mean you may share the road with horse-drawn buggies— and whatever the horse leaves behind. > Respect the locals. Route 555 passes homes, farms, and small communities. Keep the noise down, watch your speed through town, and give residents, farm equipment, and buggies plenty of room. > Watch for surprises. Gravel, wildlife, slow-moving vehicles, and buggy traffic can show up where you least expect them. The Triple Nickle is fun because it keeps you alert, so treat every blind curve like something might be waiting on the other side.

A Day Well Spent For us, the Triple Nickle makes for a solid day ride. We stopped at Fink’s Harley-Davidson in Zanesville, enjoyed the run down 555, rolled through historic Marietta, and eventually pointed the bike back toward the house.

9th Annual Shenandoah Baptist Church Scripture Run 2026

ROCKY MOUNT, NC Oh what a beautiful day April 18 th 2026 was. Probably the best weather day we have ever had in 9 years. God is so good! We had a record number of bikes and spectators. Our parking lot was full of cars and motorcycles and they just seemed to keep coming. We had the American flag in the parking lot, compliments of Tommy Wood and Wood’s Machine. Tommy is always faithful in bringing the flag for us and it is a wonderful background to our enormous prayer circle. The Prayer Circle has grown so much over the years and is my favorite time of the day. We take a few minutes hand in hand to welcome everyone to our annual event that supports our children going to church camp every year and other youth ministries and then we were led in prayer by our youth director, Calvin Peacock. Once the prayer is finished the first group of bikes fire up and head out. Nash County Sherriff officers again blocked traffic at 97 highway for them to safely begin the ride.

The cake auction is always a hit and the five deserts added to the final total raised. The winner of the high hand this year was Howard Kendrick. The Low had went to Timmy Ruffin and the 50/50 drawing won by Corbin Brown was donated back, ($185). Thanks Corbin We had an added surprise this year with Nancy West-Brake of the Nashville Graphic in attendance. We were so happy to have her in attendance and thank the Nashville Graphic for the support. We were more than Blessed this year as the total for all parts of the Scripture Run, concessions, silent cake auction, raffle and door prizes had us making $12,000. Year over year, we have increased the funds raised. Our church family and MANY friends have always been generous in supporting our youth. The ride went through Wilson and Nash counties. Our stops this year included Harper’s Nursery/Wendy’s Hole in the Wall, Cyclemax, Rose mart on Highway 97 and Sparkling Creations. It was about a 60 mile ride. Everyone enjoyed the ride and returned safely. When they returned, each person who registered was treated to a goodie bag and a hot dog lunch and of course plates were available for sale as well. We had over 150 door prizes and gift cards as well as many cash donations. Our raffle this year 1 st prize an AR5.56 riffle won by Ricky Gupton. 2 nd prize was a 65” Roku TV won by Phil Taylor and the 3 rd prize was 2 tickets for 3 shows at the Rudy theatre in Selma won by Johnny King. We are so very thankful for the participation and the number of tickets sold.

My name is Kecia Balose, and I am a proud lady rider from Matthews, North Carolina. While many riders start young, I didn’t begin my motorcycle journey until I was 42 years old. In 2009, I rode on the back of my boyfriend’s bike, knew I wanted one of my own, so I took the MSF course, earned my motorcycle endorsement, and discovered a passion that has changed my life.

Motorcycles have always been part of my family’s story. My grandfather rode, and my mother and aunts rode as well, so you could say it was in my blood all along. Today, I ride a 2020 Indian Scout and proudly serve as President of the Chrome Angelz RC Twistin’ Sisterz Matthews Chapter. Riding has given me so much more than a hobby. It has brought me lifelong friendships, confidence, adventure, and opportunities to give back through charity rides and community events. My journey is proof that it’s never too late to teach an old dog new tricks! Whether I am exploring back roads, supporting a cause, or simply enjoying some wind therapy, every ride reminds me to chase my passions, embrace the freedom of the open road, and never let age define what I am capable of.

One Of The Best Decisions I’ve Ever Made! Dalia The Isle Of Man

My motorcycle journey started three years ago when my son turned 18. As his birthday was approaching, I asked him what he would like for his special birthday present. Without hesitation, he said, “Mom, I want a motorcycle.” I agreed on one condition: he had to complete his CBT first. He did, and I bought him his motorcycle. He was absolutely delighted. Not long after, he said to me, “Mom, why don’t you get your CBT too? Then we can ride together.” My first thought was that there was absolutely no chance of that happening. I couldn’t even ride a bicycle, never mind a motorcycle! But then I thought, why not at least give it a try?

Livin' The LIFE

I completed my CBT on my own motorcycle, and to my surprise, I absolutely loved it. It took me a few months to build my confidence, but once I did, I decided to go for my full motorcycle licence. It wasn’t easy. It took me three attempts to pass my full bike test, but giving up was never an option. Looking back now, it was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Today, my son, my partner, and I ride together whenever we can. We have become completely obsessed with motorcycles and the amazing lifestyle that comes with them. Through biking, we have met so many wonderful people and made great friends. I also live on the Isle of Man, a place famous around the world for the TT races. Every year for the last three years, we have eagerly looked forward to TT fortnight—the incredible riders, the atmosphere, the events, and the excitement that takes over the island. It’s an amazing experience that brings together people from all over the world who share the same passion. Motorcycling has given me confidence, unforgettable experiences, lifelong friendships, and countless memories with the people I love most. Without a doubt, getting my motorcycle licence is one of the best things I have ever done.

“A

1 stick margarine or butter, melted 1 cup apple cider vinegar 1 red pepper, chopped 12-15 doves, cleaned & dressed 12-15 Bacon Strips Combine margarine or butter, apple cider vinegar, and red pepper (heat this until warm). Wrap each dove breast in bacon and secure with water-soaked toothpick. Dip dove breasts in sauce and cook over medium hot coals… continue basting with sauce until done (10-15 mins). CORN PUDDING 2 ½ cups fresh sweet corn 3 eggs 1 tablespoon flour 1 tablespoon sugar

2 tablespoons butter or margarine 1 ½ cup evaporated milk ½ teaspoon salt

Beat eggs. Add salt, flour, sugar, milk, melted butter and corn. Stir. Pour into a greased baking dish and bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes or until firm.

JO’S CORN BREAD CAKE 1 cup self rising flour 1 cup chopped peacans 1 cup sugar 1 cup brown sugar 3 eggs 3/4 cup vegetable oil 1 tsp vanilla Mix dry ingredients first. Beat eggs, pour eggs, vanilla and oil. Hand stir gently. Pour into lightly oiled cake pan. Bake at 350* till middle is done. Edges will be hard if over cooked. A glass dish will need to be removed from oven a few minutes early to avoid overcooking. MOLASSES GLAZE

Hello to my happy people! Well...to continue from the last article. I hate saying it but it is what it is. We decided to shut down the club. To some, it made their lives a little easier. Times are hard these days. With the economy, and just the times the way they are. You’re either working all the time to stay afloat, and then using your free time to catch up with family. It just got to a point. The club time was cut so much. It was best just to call it quits. It wasn’t an easy decision...not to me. A huge part of my life was made while I was in our club. When I first got introduced to Unspoken Sons, it was kinda wild, because at the very moment, a longtime friend wanted to start a motorcycle club. We played with ideas and finally came up with a name. That same week, I met Deuce. We talked briefly and then he invited me out to their clubhouse. Folks, I wasn’t there probably a few hours and really digged the whole set up. I did later tell my buddy about it but he wasn’t into it. So, I sat with my thoughts. Should I follow his lead or break off on a path of my own.

After a few days, I made my decision. I was going to be an Unspoken Sons member. Lord, what a path I took. It changed my whole life. I met my wife through the club. Made life long bonds with brothers of the club. It’s just not something you scratch off the Calendar. But I got to be real...I wasn’t as much involved the last couple of years between work and raising a family. Club life was just a part of my life. Family and my job took a lot of my time. I would try to make a ride here and there but I wasn’t being as devoted as some of my brothers. That’s how I added to the cracking of the foundation. I do feel bad but I am a family man first through and through.

It sometimes totally sucked to feel in my chest I was ripping myself apart. Love for Family, love for the club. So...that’s why I said, yeah...

It’s hard sometimes to think back and realize it’s all gone. There will never be another club like Unspoken. Something about going 70 mph throwing bud light beers at each other, or egging a prospect on top of the club house. You can’t make memories like the ones I know. Leaving Jacksonville at night with the temperatures at 19 degrees. How about a freezing rain washes over you and you just made it back from an hour long trip. Next thing you know, you make it to the club house and everyone is about naked trying to get out of wet clothes. Really nice way to impress the soon to be mother in law...HAHA! Lord the fun we all had during the prospecting stage. I can’t even type some of that up here. How about those little side missions? Ever heard of a coon dick tooth pick ? Hahaha. Yeah... Some things have to be left Unspoken. Ha ha ha!

I will say this, I am thankful. I am thankful for the memories. I am thankful for the life it gave me. I am thankful to all those who showed so much love and devotion to the club. I can’t tell you how many people I’ve met and made great friendships with through the club. I look back at all my pictures and I can’t help but flash back to that very moment. The laughs, and the tears. It was hard also...because during our time as a club, we lost two souls. Daytona, and later in years, we lost Smokie Joe. I felt we were leaving them behind. Like how can we keep their memories alive? Like I said, it’s not easy. It’s not as easy as closing a door. There’s way too much living energy and great times. Too much loyalty these two brothers had for the club...So, I was thrilled to hear my brothers are going to keep to one of our traditions. We are going to keep a ride we have always made for Daytona and now we are adding Joe. We are going to have a lost brothers ride to remember them. That made me feel good. To me, it keeps their memory alive. We can do it forever if it’s up to me. “Till the end”. We can continue ‘til we are all eventually laid to rest ourselves.

But I look back in my history on my phone or F. book and it’s completely loaded with club life. I mean, I went the family way, but I was a lifer. I made my time on 2 wheels. I did what I could do. Made what I could make.

I want to take a minute to give credit where credit is due. Having a club that was like ours, you saw a lot of personalities. There were a lot. Different people, different ways of life. Sometimes you got along, sometimes you didn’t. That’s a brotherhood, and my brother Nasty was a whole different breed all to himself. He gave all to the club, I mean, all. So many sacrifices, and a lot of brothers didn’t realize it. To some it was party central, to others it was a second family. Nasty, it was a way of life. I admired him for it, too.

mer... Yea...Unspoken Sons forever, Forever Unspoken Sons. Absolutely... I’ve been invited to go to other clubs, and trust me, I’m honored to be asked. I think the best route at the moment is to forever be an Unspoken Son. There may not be a patch, but sometimes Brotherhood goes beyond the patch. The brotherhood lives in USS. Today, on August 12th. My new cutt came in. It’s a plain canvas. No patches as of yet but there will be. 2Timer will still be my name, my brothers will forever be my bros. Nothing will change that. My cutt will have a few added memories so that will make it mean something to me. I say that, because we lived an old skool biker club way of life. So to me, patches are earned. It was hard to wrap my head around, just having a cutt. but I’m settled with it, just knowing there will be some old thread sewn in the cutt. Yeah...I’m good with it. Time changes everything. We don’t know what tomorrow will bring, so be thankful. Find God, live life and twist that throttle back. 2Timer

There’s Going To Come A Time In the Old testament King Solomon wrote this in the book called Ecclesiastes which means (Teacher) Chapter 3 For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven. A time to be born and a time to die a time to plant and a time to harvest. A time to kill and a time to heal. A time to tear down and a time to build up. A time to cry and a time to laugh. A time to grieve and a time to dance. A time to scatter stones and a time to gather stones. A time to embrace and a time to turn away. A time to search and a time to quit searching. A time to tear and a time to mend. A time to be quiet and a time to speak. A time to love and a time to hate. A time for war and a time for peace. King Solomon who asked God for this wisdom said God has made all of this, and one cannot see the whole scope of God’s work from beginning to end.

Frank, a brother who lost a son, loves to rebuild motors and carpentry. Awareness For Allen Memorial Ride Freshwater Beer Company 904 Pollock St. Law Enforcement will be escorting this ride. KSU 11am. We’ll ride through downtown New Bern and across the bridge. Traveling up Hwy 17, we’ll turn down Aurora Rd then head towards Grantsboro. We’ll make a stop for a quick break at Motion Church for drinks and snacks at Allen’s place of worship. Then we’ll make our way back over the bridge to Freshwater. Allen loved cars before he loved motorcycles. We welcome all vehicles to participate. The front of the ride will be the motorcycles with the cars following behind. We welcome everyone to stay around Freshwater after the ride for fellowship. Share some stories of Allen or about your own rides. We’ll have a 50/50 raffle as well as some other raffle prizes. This is a free event, but donations are graciously accepted. 100% of all donations will go directly to the non-profit being formed in honor of Allen.
