Appearances Can Be Deceiving
One of the local annual poker runs for charity begins at a gas station not far from our home. One year, while waiting for the ride to begin, my husband and I sought the shade of the gas pump stands to escape the heat of the noonday sun.
We leaned against the concrete pillar and chatted quietly while we waited for KSU. We’d been there a few minutes when the gentleman one pump down from us finished filling his tank. He headed into the station to pay. As he passed us, he said, “Good morning.” I replied cheerfully, “Good morning!” When I replied, the gentleman looked up. For the first time, he saw — really saw who he was speaking to. There was a slight hitch in his step as he passed us. Then as he went by, he tucked his head, murmured “Jesus loves you,” and scurried toward the building. I replied, “Yes! Yes, He does,” but I don’t think he heard me.
I’d like to think that gentleman could feel in his heart that my husband and I were his brother and sister in Christ, but let’s be honest. I was standing there in boots, jeans, and an old bike rally t-shirt with a turquoise streak in my braided hair. He was probably not wondering what church I attended. He was more likely wondering if I had ever heard Jesus’ name used any way other than in vain. Regardless of how the gentleman meant what he said, I am glad he had the courage to speak of Jesus. I am glad he had such compassion for a stranger that he felt compelled to share God’s love with us.
People make assumptions based on what they see and in light of their own life experiences. They interpret what they see based on what they know. What they don’t know, they assume.
(If you see an elderly lady and a young man standing beside a disabled car, who do you assume is helping whom?) The problem is, appearances can be deceiving.
That’s just one of the wonders of our great God. He looks beyond what’s visible to what’s beneath: the heart. God looks beyond the leather — or the expensive suit or the dirt and grime or the pasted-on smile or the bad attitude — and sees the hurting soul beneath, the soul that He loves and that He longs to draw to Himself. When you look at those around you, ask God for His vision of them: souls, precious in His eyes and to His heart. Be willing, like that gentleman at the gas station, to share God’s love wherever you go.
Perhaps you’ve never encountered the love of Jesus. Or maybe you did, but you thought it came with a lot of “don’t do” strings attached. It doesn’t, by the way. It’s a gift. God offers it freely to you, but He won’t make you accept it. That’s up to you.
Sometimes it’s the simplicity that trips us up. In this give-and-take fallen world of ours, we are hard-wired to look for the “catch” in what we see as a deal too good to be true. Well, God’s love is the exception that proves that rule. While you do have to understand it to accept it, it doesn’t cost YOU a thing because Jesus already paid for it.
Can you recognize that you’re not perfect? Welcome to the human race. Every one of us is broken. Can you admit that you can never be perfect? We all know it’s true, but few of us want to admit just how broken we are. However, you’re not telling God anything HE didn’t already know. It’s YOU that needs to see it and admit it.
Do you know what Jesus did for your brokenness? He took it on His own shoulders. He became your brokenness so that you could be saved from yourself and from separation from God forever. There’s no disputing that who we are will live on long after this physical house we’re “renting” succumbs to rack and ruin. The only question is where we’ll live once our lease on these earthly bodies is up.
And that, my friend, is totally up to you.
One of the lessons I learned about a year ago is that if your ride’s not moving, it’s falling. Same principle. If you aren’t throttling toward heaven by accepting what Jesus did for you on the cross and asking Him to be your Lord and Savior, then you’re falling toward hell — and the landing is going to be a very hard, very ugly and very FINAL one.
Don’t fall for the schemes of the enemy, because once this ride is done, there’s no going back.
“Christ suffered for our sins once for all time. He never sinned, but he died for sinners to bring you safely home to God. He suffered physical death, but he was raised to life in the Spirit.”
1 Peter 3:18 NLT
“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus or Lord.”
Romans 6:23 NLT
“If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”
Romans 10:9 NLT

Mission BBQ
On Friday night 4/10/26 my family and I had the honor of dining at and learning about Mission BBQ. This is thanks to my very good friend, veteran and man with a spirit like no one else I have ever met, Ob jammer (Bill Amerson). See they are opening a new restaurant location in Raleigh and are building their Honor Wall for Fallen Heroes. Ob told them about Travis and I. He put me in touch with Jonathan Windham at Mission BBQ and long story shortened Travis has been added to the wall and a bio, was created to be read by patrons of the restaurant. This is just one of the big things this organization does for veterans, police officers, firefighters, first responders, as well as their families and the community. So, although I don’t think thank you is enough, Thank you Ob and Mission BBQ for helping ensure Travis and so many others will not be forgotten. ~Wendy Nixon

If you are a Proud American Biker send us your photo with our American flag to include here!

Proud American Bikers
If you are a citizen of the United States you should be proud to live in the greatest country on the face of this planet! You should be proud that you have more freedoms here than anywhere else in the world! Being American is an honor, not a privilage. We all have the same opportunities regardless of your background, race, religion, gender, class status, etc.

You are free to come and go as you wish. You are free to practice whatever religion you believe in. America is a place where everyone has the opportunity to go to college, open your own business, marry, peacefully assemble and protest, vote, own your own home, etc. Many or all of these things are forbidden in many countries around the world.
Send your photo to: behindbarz333@ gmail.com You can also post to the Proud American Biker Facebook page.

In some places women are not aloud to vote and gay marriage is also not allowed. In many of those same places people are imprisoned/killed for those very reasons. Some countries you can’t even protest or defy the government or you will be put in prison just for speaking your mind.
Everyone who is protesting, hating, or bad mouthing this great country of ours you need to step back and take a look at how fortunate you are. You might not like the president that we voted in! You might not like the fact that male masculinity is back again! You might not even like that our military believes “stronger people are harder to kill!” But one thing is for sure, there are many of us who are proud American bikers! We fly the flag, we support our president and we will defend this great country to our last breath!

Behind Barz Tennessee
Welcome to Behind Barz Mag Tennessee edition! After twenty-two years supporting the motorcycle culture and its riders in three states, were expanding into a state filled with iconic rides; The Tail of The Dragon, The Devils Triangle and The Snake.
As with any region and its rides, its also what attracts and keeps riders coming back. Our strategy into the Volunteer state is simple, put Behind Barz in front of the hundreds of thousands of riders, car club drivers, off-road adventurists and more importantly, spotlight the places they’re going. So let’s top off our tanks and shift gears.
First stop, the iconic Brushy Mountain Penitentiary in Petros, TN. Brushy has been dangerous since 1896 and operated as the states most isolated and feared prison for one hundred and thirteen years and became the end of the line for many. In fact, one of its most notable cons, James Earl Ray, died in a local hospital after twenty-nine years into his life sentence at Brushy.

Nestled into rugged terrain, the prison is a fortress with its high concrete walls adorned with guard towers and rows of razor wire. In its storied history, there was only one successful escape. Successful only because three convicts managed to escape, but gave up because of the formidable terrain.

Brushy has been a tourist attraction since it closed in 2009, and now hosts prison tours, a museum, the only “legal” prison distillery, two restaurant’s, paranormal tours, an ORV mecca, special event accommodations, moonshine sales in their gift shop, a new RV park with fifty-seven full hook up 50 amp sites, top performers (Jamie Johnson, Dwight Yoakam and Aaron Lewis to name a few), in the prison yard concert venue and soon, cabin rentals.

If a day at Brushy isn’t enough to grab your attention, then let’s add it’s right on The Devils Triangle!
The triangle is a combination of technical riding along with a few scenic vistas and one general store to take in. The Triangle, at forty-four miles long, is more of a diamond shape as it connects Petros, to Rocky Top and down to Oliver Springs, TN with sharp double hairpin fist gear brake dragging turns to slalom weaving along the river where you can put your feet up on the pegs and cruise along.
Make plans to visit Brushy, ride The Devils Triangle and enjoy all of the region’s offerings.

SPRING MOTORCYCLE

A nononsense list to get your bike—and yourself— back on
the road
Spring is here! The salt is (mostly) gone, the roads are calling, and your motorcycle would like to stop being a very expensive garage ornament. Before you twist the throttle and chase that first warm day, take a few minutes to prep both bike and rider. You already know TCLOCS is mandatory—so let’s talk about the stuff riders forget.
Check Your Gear
Pull your riding gear out of hibernation. If it’s been living in a saddlebag since October, it probably smells like last season’s optimism. Wash it according to the manufacturer’s instructions—machine or hand as appropriate—and reapply waterproofing if needed. And remember: getting caught in a rainstorm is not the same thing as cleaning your gear.

Inspect Your Helmet:
Those bugs from last season should come off easily by now. Remove and clean the interior padding per the manufacturer’s instructions and check every nook and cranny for uninvited squatters—especially spiders (the eightlegged kind, not the CanAm)
Evaluate and Replace Gear:
Riding gear is safety equipment, not fashion. If your helmet, gloves, or jacket are questionable, don’t negotiate with them. Repair or replace as needed. You’re responsible for your own hide—dress accordingly.
Give Your Motorcycle a check for unwanted guests:
If your bike wasn’t properly winterized, take a look in places critters love—exhaust, airbox, and tuckedaway corners. Mice don’t pay rent, and they chew wiring
Give your bike a once over:
Clean and polish everything. Wash off the dust and grime that settled in over winter. This is also the perfect time to wax painted surfaces and protect what the elements will try to destroy all season.
Restock your saddlebags or backpack:
Check your firstaid kit and replace anything used or expired.
Sunscreen and ChapStick… might want to swap out the vintage 2021 flavors for something new.
That emergency candy bar? Eat it now. You’ve earned it. Replace it before the next ride.

MOTORCYCLE RIDING PREP
Review the owner’s manual:
Get yourself reacquainted with the functions of your motorcycle.
Check your insurance:
Did you stop or reduce your insurance on your motorcycle over the winter?
Give a quick call to your agent to get your insurance up to date.

Practice Panic Stops:
Find an empty parking lot or quiet road. Get up to speed and brake hard. Learn what your bike does when it really matters. Ride twoup? Practice with your passenger. It’s better to learn together in a controlled environment than be surprised when it counts. And yes—check your brakes first.

I Just Want 2 Ride... I started riding at 5 years old, before I could ride a bicycle. Recently retired for the second time, my wife and I live in southeast Ohio right across the river from West Virginia.
This isn’t an allinclusive list, and every rider will add their own rituals. But a little preparation now means fewer surprises later—and more miles spent smiling inside your helmet.

We welcome “I Just Want 2 Ride” to the Behind Barz family! Each issue they will be enlightening us on all things motorcycle. From riding how to’s, tips, ideas, trip preperations, bike maintenance, etc.
Check out their Facebook page! Especially if you can’t wait until the next issue. Great reads and photos on their page!

LEGION RIDERS Chapter 265.
JACKSONVILLE, NC
11 April 26
The 4th Annual Be The One Suicide Prevention Ride and 3rd Annual Car Show and Vendor Event. Participants gathered to ride together from Fayetteville to Jacksonville to raise awareness and support for suicide prevention efforts. There are so many to thank for this weekend’s successful event. Not crazy enough to try and name them because they know who they are. We do want to call out the multiple County Sheriff Deputies who escorted over 100 bikes and cages safely from Fayetteville to Selma to Goldsboro to Jacksonville, couldn’t have done it without them. Then the Car Show and Vendor Event in Jacksonville at American Legion Burton-Cowell post 265 a special thanks to National Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram and Kartunez for their continued support and sponsorship of this event.
This event is a powerful reminder that connection saves lives. By showing up, checking in, and standing together, we can help ensure no one faces their struggles alone.
We thank our veterans and their families for their service, sacrifice, and continued strength, and for reminding us that together, we can make a difference. The success today is 1. Everyone is safe. 2. Everyone involved helped raise just under $5,800.00 for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention North Carolina Chapter. Great job everyone!

Great Things Accomplished Because of Great Bikers
RALEIGH, NC
American Legion Riders 116 Tobacco Road HD 28 March 26
Saturday was an incredible day for the American Legion Riders, NC Post 116!
They held their 2nd annual “Rev It Up for Colon Cancer Awareness Ride,” and over 60 riders showed up ready to make a difference.
Even though it was a bit chilly and windy, the turnout was amazing. These folks came together not just for the ride, but to raise both money and important awareness for colon cancer.
The group kicked things off at Tobacco Road HarleyDavidson, made fun stops along the way at Shakey Rays, Garden State Grill, and finished back at Post 116 with a great meal.
By the end of the day, they had blown past last year’s total of $2,800 and raised over $4,000 for the Colon Cancer Coalition. That’s real impact!
This special ride was started last year by Rider Director Chris Stocker, after losing his brother-in-law to colon cancer. Just weeks later, another Rider lost her brother to the same disease. Both men were younger than 50 when they were diagnosed.
That heartbreaking loss is what drives this ride — to spread the message that early screening saves lives.
After the ride, as everyone was talking and sharing, one rider said something that made it all worthwhile to another member.
“I’m going to talk to my doctor. This has been the most impactful conversation I’ve had with anybody tonight.”
That, right there, is exactly why these events matter. One conversation. One decision to get screened. One life that might be saved.
Huge thanks to everyone who rode, volunteered, and supported this cause. Your hearts and horsepower made a real difference.

2Cents from 2Timer...

Hello my happy riders!!!
The weather has got me rolling up my sleeves up one minute, then rolling them back down. I was riding the other day to get my plates updated and the weather was absolutely perfection. It made the whole experience that day wonderful. I just cruised with zero ambition to do nothing else. I twisted the wick just enough to make the limit and sat on it. The whole ride was just bliss, if you know what I mean. That’s when it hits me. I’m so caught up with family, sometimes I forget how cool it is to be an ol’ Biker man. To walk out to the shed. Clean the pollen off and fire it up. I love to just let it idle. I usually do that if it’s been a week or so since she’s been awakened. I let it run and let her wake up soft and easy. She’s been a sleep for a week, she might be a little cranky, Ha!
I’m getting ready to drop some cash on her, though. Tires and oil change. Maybe I can knock out the switch. Either way, I’m ‘bout to get her really ready.

Being a Biker does get you noticed. Like it or not we do stand out from the crowd. While others wear the latest trends, we tend to hold still to the ol’ black and blue. Harley shirt and some jeans. Black boots and maybe a wallet chain. We see each other from a mile away. The reason I’m saying this is I caught myself saying something I’d thought I’d never say. I was asked would I seriously recommend for a teenager to ride a motorcycle. At first, ...remember, I just came off the high way. Being highway 40. A traffic full of mentally handicapped people that were driving 80+ miles an hour with a phone glued to their complete attention. Heart is racing and I’m burning one down...oops and said...Nooooo... My mind still coming down from the adrenaline high I had from battling lanes on the highway with zombies.
But...I caught myself. I was a teen on a motorcycle. I started early, but I was in the country. A few hardly ever used roads around the house. I taught myself to ride. There were no phones, but that didn’t mean that the dangers were not there...oh no.
No phones in a cage dwellers lap back then but it was because the phone replaced the beer can. Oh yea. 1990’s the old Chevy hard body from the 1980’s had unforgiving chrome bumpers and an operator with a belly of cold beer, with a cigarette in one hand and one hand on the wheel. One eye shut and the other one focused on the center line. Yelp, that’s what phones replaced, the beer can. So, we didn’t have a Facebook distraction, nope...We got T-boned by Bubba, 7 beers deep and to soon be sitting there talking to the Trooper, saying... Dam’n...I didn’t even see him...hic up.
Yeah, at first my mind was coming off a crazy highway. I was thinking how crazy it was and then someone asked, What do you think of teenagers on Motorcycles? I said, No...But yeah. I started young. I got my scars. I’ve had the beautiful buffing marks of an old paved back road. I’ve had moments, I could have pinched the small size piece of vinyl from my motorcycle seat with my very own butt hooo leee hoooooo. Yelp, I’ve been that scared. Ha ha ha! I see green light, the cage dweller, well...they seem to see opportunity. When you see it unfold for the first time. I almost needed to go home and change.
Now I’m 50. It’s nothing new. You see morons all the time about to do some stupid shit. You just make the choice in your head. Do I gas it? Or Do I stop? Really that simple. But for a newbie. You’ll grab some Rose Mary’s and holy Jesus’s or what ever you support lol! You’ll rethink it all, hahaha trust that.
It goes back to what my Grandpa said, Never loose respect for a motorcycle, or it will make you.
It’s true.
I guess it’s the individual. You got to have a mind set. Like today I’m going to ride and ask God to place his hands around me. I’m going to ask God to protect me, for I will not fear. Amen and roll baby!!
Well guys, that’s all I got right now. Look it’s about to be that time where the 2 or 3 wheels are spinning. Look around. Stop! Look twice or hell just one more look! Save a biker!
Love ya! 2Timer

Men Who Live Life Behind Barz

the good news!
Rodger Duvall ~ Jesus Freak
You’ll never know when this could happen to you, and when it does, you’re just going to have to be okay with it. You see I lost my riding passenger today. For the past two seasons I would wait for this request from them, ”I’d like a ride today” I would always be at the ready for that request, for me it meant that we were on the same page for wind therapy. Like my bike, I was always ready for Behind Barz in the wind. To have their company that close to me to enjoy the ride, perfect weather, road and no words communicated, just shared thoughts of possessing freedom in the wind. Same mindset, but different thoughts to ponder to release frustrations, concerns and situations that had been jammed up. And as the twists and turns maneuvered us our minds would maneuver to be free. Free from the confusion to purpose to resolve to be lost from everything the world finds us thinking. Before we’d know it, it was time to turn around and head back, and this meant everything had been worked out in our minds, your heart, Spirit and Soul. All of us have a mind and soul and a mind, our Spirits are shaped by experiences our heart is shaped by that those also. Riding with my passenger was a connection that I always treasured. But I have lost my passenger today, she put trust to me to command the barz to steer, clutch to shift, throttle and brake to ride free and safe.

I had been riding alone for a while, I do not have my passenger anymore, at times I would ponder the thoughts’ of not having them. Now I have lost them, and I’ve come to realize I must give up my will to a much greater will them, what God has purposed for them I have to accept. Our will, minds, heart, spirit, soul were created and purposed way before we are even born. God knew us before we even know ourselves, He knew I would lose my riding passenger, it’s bittersweet, I miss them because of my love for them, but I know they are in a better place. I have to turn sorrow into joy knowing they are much happier, she truly is free. My joy with them as my passenger I treasure, so I have to let them go. Don’t be sad for me ok, they are still with me, just not as close, their Spirit is near, just not as my passenger.
You see, SHE, bought her own bike! And isn’t that what we are supposed to do? I’ve done my job, introduced them to freedom, to riding free with her knees in the breeze. God’s word says one plants, one waters but it is God who gives the increase, we are planters and know we get the joy of seeing them free, watching them now smile helmet strap to helmet strap on their way to following the One who is the way truth and life behind their own barz of this life’s highway to heaven.
