BIG FEELINGS, SMALL STEPS

Have you ever felt so mad you wanted to stomp like a dinosaur? Or so sad it felt like a raincloud followed you around all day? Maybe you’ve been so excited you couldn’t sit still! Big feelings like these are totally normal and guess what? Even grown-ups have them.
But sometimes, big feelings can feel like they’re too much. That’s where small steps come in.
WHAT ARE BIG FEELINGS?
Big feelings are strong emotions that can take over your body and mind. They can be:
Anger – like a volcano ready to erupt
Sadness – like a puddle you can’t get out of
Fear – like your heart is racing
Joy – like you’re flying on a rainbow
These feelings are not “bad” they’re part of being human! But when they get really loud inside, they can make it hard to focus, talk kindly, or feel calm.
THE POWER OF SMALL STEPS
You don’t have to make your big feelings disappear all at once. You just need to take one small step at a time.
Here are some small steps you can try:
1. NAME IT TO TAME IT
Say how you feel out loud or in your mind:
“I feel mad.”
“I feel worried ”
“I feel happy!”
When you name your feeling, it’s like turning on a light in a dark room things suddenly feel a little clearer.
2. BREATHE LIKE A BALLOON
Take a slow, deep breath in through your nose and out through your mouth. Pretend you're blowing up a balloon. Try it 3 times. This helps your brain calm down so you can think better.
3. MOVE IT OUT
Dance, walk, stretch, or shake your hands like jelly. Moving your body is a healthy way to release big emotions.
4. DRAW OR WRITE
Grab a notebook and doodle your feelings. Or write a letter (you don’t have to send it!).
Creative things help you understand what’s going on inside.
5. TALK
TO
SOMEONE YOU TRUST
Find a grown-up or friend who listens well. You don’t have to fix everything alone. Talking helps you feel lighter.
REMEMBER: YOU’RE GROWING!
Just like learning to ride a bike or tie your shoes, learning how to handle your feelings takes practice. You won’t always get it right and that’s okay! What matters is that you keep trying, one small step at a time.
YOU are brave. YOU are strong. And YOU can handle big feelings little by little.
So the next time your emotions feel as big as a mountain, take a deep breath, find your small step… and climb it.

Trusting God: Even When You Can’t See the Whole Path
Have you ever walked in the dark with a flashlight? You can’t see the whole road—just a few steps in front of you. But with every step you take, the light moves ahead and shows you more.
THAT’S KIND OF WHAT IT’S LIKE TO TRUST GOD.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO TRUST GOD
Trusting God means believing that He knows what's best for us, even when we don’t understand what’s happening.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” – Proverbs 3:5
God sees the whole picture our past, present, and future. When we trust Him, we’re saying, “God, I know You love me, and I believe Your plan is good—even when it’s hard.”
BUT WHAT IF I’M SCARED OR UNSURE?
Great question! Everyone feels scared or confused sometimes, even adults. But here’s the awesome thing: God is big enough to handle our fears. You can pray and say: “God, I’m nervous about this test...”
“God, I don’t understand why my friend moved away...”
“God, I’m worried about my family...”
And He listens. He’s always listening.

REAL-LIFE FAITH IN ACTION
Here’s a simple way to practice trusting God:
Take one step. Don’t wait to understand everything. If God is nudging your heart to be kind, help someone, or try something new go for it!
Pray first. Even a short prayer like “God, help me trust You” can make a difference.
Tell someone you trust. Talk with a parent, teacher, or leader about what’s on your heart.
TRUST CHALLENGE
Write this in your journal or say it out loud:
“Even when I don’t understand everything, I trust that God loves me and will guide me.”
GOD’S PROMISE:
“When I am afraid, I put my trust in You.” – Psalm 56:3
