It’s the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Yes, it’s back and this year there will (hopefully) be no COVID cancelling, as the team behind the fest get ready for some belly-laughs. Also ready is our cover star Claire Hooper, whose show Sweet Charity explores her desire to not only be a funny person but a good person too. She tells us about the show and her 20 years behind the mic stand. ●

fter a rough few years, we could all do with a good laugh. As director of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Susan Provan knows that better than most. The 2020 festival didn’t happen, the 2021 festival was a shrunken affair and last year everyone who came got COVID. “The virus was just going nuts,” Provan says. “It was so stressful. We spent the whole festival cancelling and rescheduling shows, and I never want to have one of those again. “This year, there’s an optimism and enthusiasm and people just wanting to get on with it.” Sure enough, this year’s program feels like the festival is getting back to doing what it does best – showcasing the cream of comedy from home and abroad.

Go on, have a laugh Melbourne’s comedy festival is back to its pre-COVID best. The number of gigs is back at preCOVID levels, with about 600 shows booked at venues across Melbourne. Comedians are flying in from farflung spots in the United States, Britain and Asia (the latter as part of the ever-expanding Comedy Zone Asia showcase). “Stand-up comedy in India and South-East Asia has really boomed in the last 10 years,” Provan says. “We take tours there every year, we make a lot of friends and then we bring those friends back [here].” This year it includes rising stars from Malaysia, Singapore and India and Indonesia’s first Muslim female stand-up comic, Sakdiyah Ma’ruf. Provan says that, aside from the joys of Melbourne itself, the main draw for international comics is the festival’s relaxed atmosphere.

“In Edinburgh, and in the big festivals in the US, there’s always this underlying stress, because of who’s watching and who’s going to get signed,” she says. “Whereas I feel that in Melbourne, people just enjoy themselves. There’s great camaraderie and artists just all love seeing each other’s shows and making friends.” This friendliness extends to making the festival open to as many people as possible, including families. Parents are invited to bring their six- to 12-year-olds to the Comedy Club for Kids, a school holiday showcase featuring circus, sketch, stand-up and musical comedy. Other highlights include an opening night gala hosted by Hannah Gadsby (who started

out at one of the festival’s open mic nights), a new show from Circus Oz, First Nations dancer-turnedcomedian Sean Choolburra, British transgender comedian Jordan Gray, and breakthrough local star Lizzy Hoo. Provan says she hopes all Melburnians will feel welcome. But what shows would she recommend to someone who is yet to step foot in a festival gig? “Mel Buttle,” she says, after a quick disclaimer about not picking favourites. “She’s just gone off on TikTok and she’s so relatable. From overseas, I’d point them towards our headliners, Shen Wang, the Lucas Bros and Patti Harrison. Oh – and Josie Long! Even if you think you

don’t like comedy, you’ll find everybody falls in love with [her].” Having first taken on the mantle of director back in 1995, Provan is approaching three decades overseeing the festival. Times have changed. With the social media age has, arguably, come a new censoriousness – the notorious cancel culture – but she believes there’s still a need for freewheeling comedy. “Comedy is a really important way of telling stories, and generating understanding of people who are different to you,” Provan says. “We certainly believe very, very firmly in free speech and artists’ right to express their opinions. “But, having said that, we make it very clear that we don’t think normalising violence against women, homophobia, racism or ableism is funny. Comedy can be challenging, it can be robust, but it’s generally underpinned by kindness, not brutality.” ● MELBOURNE INTERNATIONAL COMEDY FESTIVAL \ March 29 to

s she celebrates 20 years as a stand-up comedian this year, Claire Hooper is pondering what comes next but is also doing things differently this time around: She’s picking up the phone to make calls to various family members to clear the jokes she will share at this year’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Sweet Charity is perhaps that career crossroads moment for Hooper, who is exploring her sister-inlaw’s separation – and yes, she has done the polite thing and called her and the ex-partner to make sure it’s OK. Forget cancel culture; nothing is more bastardly than breaking the family code of silence – even if they do live in New Zealand. As she takes the call for this interview, Hooper is attending to a sick dog, trying to get the attention of her husband, who is discussing their property renovation with the builder at their Brunswick home, and attempting to hustle her way into a quiet bedroom. She finally succeeds.

“Nobody does the same thing for 20 years any more, do they?” she says. “It’s an interesting thing to ask myself why I am still doing this. But I also have a deep sense [that] I am not quite finished with comedy yet.” Hooper says there is always something new to discover about the art form. “I am always so curious about the people I know who walk away from it, like Judith Lucy,” she says. “I am 100 per cent behind her decision and I love that she knows she is ready. “But, to me, it’s a question of, ‘How do you know you feel finished with an art form like this?’ ” Hooper was only a year into an occupational therapy course in Perth when she realised theatre would be her schtick instead. She moved into theatre studies at Curtain University and also worked at her parents’ garden shop – earning herself a horticulture and design qualification and designing a garden for a client. “It was one garden design, but I did it,” she says.

mention focus on becoming a vegetarian again! “I have always tried to be a good human that gives back to society,” she says. “In 2022 I had that realisation again. “Prior to having kids, I did a lot more volunteering. I was vegetarian, which I was comfortable with, and when I fell pregnant I [thought I’d] go back to meat because it seemed easier. “I thought more about what I used to be like – someone who was more engaged with their beliefs – and I have been going back to that slowly.” Hooper went to Vanuatu a year ago with ActionAid and has also hosted happy-hour comedy nights to raise money for the global women’s rights organisation. “Going to Vanuatu with ActionAid was an energising moment for me,” she says. “It got me thinking about the internal conflict I often have on stage. I am fairly left-wing and I don’t want to alienate those at my show who aren’t. I do ask myself how I can be true to my own beliefs and

“I talk about others on stage in this new show and really decided to be courteous,” she says. “My sis-in-law is going through a marriage separation and I made sure I ran the content by her and her husband. “One of my daughters also told me not to tell certain stories on stage; I got the stern ‘no, that is out of bounds’. Luckily, I have a husband who says, ‘Say whatever you want.’ He is generous like that. “We spent last summer with my in-laws in NZ and it’s a tricky line to work into my show. I am … thinking I do have to be mindful of their feelings.” The 46-year-old grew up in Perth and moved to Melbourne at age 30 and has been here since (except for a two-year stint on radio in Sydney). She says the city she calls home acts as a midway point between her husband’s family in New Zealand and hers on the west coast. Surviving in stand-up for two decades is no easy feat, and when I ask Hooper what inspires her to keep on keeping on, she admits it’s the unknown.

She’s best known for her appearances on shows such as Network 10’s Good News Week alongside Paul McDermott and a five-year TV hosting role of The Great Australian Bake Off Off. Since 2005, Hooper has regularly performed at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. In 2006, she scored a Best Newcomer nomination at the festival and made it into a top-five comedy pick at Scotland’s Edinburgh Fringe around the same time. She has written and performed solo shows including Show Girl, Storybook, One Small Thing and Forget Your Troubles C’mon Get Hoopsy. The new show, Sweet Charity, was always on the cards (she performed it at the Adelaide Fringe before MICF) and now the timing is right. But comedy hasn’t always been enough. Hooper admits now that her children are primary-school-aged and not babies any more, she can also devote time to charity work and getting behind good causes. Oh, and not to

not compromise on them but make everyone feel included in the show. “I talked to comedian Tom Ballard about it for a while, and ended up settling on the idea that as long as I am not lampooning myself, I can still talk about my beliefs.” While she has not drawn up any five or 10-year plans, Hooper has started making a list of things she’d like to achieve before she turns 50. So far, writing a new comedy show has a tick alongside it. “I feel lucky I keep getting asked to do things,” she says. “I haven’t been strategic about my career and what has happened so far, and I don’t honestly know what I’ll do next. “Who knows, I might have an out-of-character planning session about the next five years. “Wait and see.” ● CLAIRE HOOPER: SWEET CHARITY \ March 30 to April 9, Mantra on Russell. ● comedyfestival.com.au

If your arms aren’t too heavily laden with the spoils of your shopping, take a stroll down Kyneton’s other main drags, Mollison and High streets. Here the streets are lined with historic buildings and shops with beautiful antique facades and verandahs. Stop to admire the heritage-listed Post Office building, which was constructed in 1871, then drop into the c1860 Newmarket Kyneton Hotel for a well-deserved drink. Feeling inspired by the abundance of artists in town? At the Old Auction House in the centre of Kyneton, a variety of short courses from jewellery making to fabric marbling are on offer – perfect for a weekend getaway. The building also houses a retail store specialising in art and craft supplies as well as two gallery spaces with rotating exhibitions.

For those who like to spend time in the great outdoors, the Campaspe River walk is easy and picturesque, or you could hop back into the car and take a scenic 15-minute drive to Hanging Rock.

Food and drink Dining in Kyneton is a glorious affair; from indulgent bakeries to hatted restaurants, the eateries here punch well above their weight. You’ll want to start your day early, because there is a lot to fit in. For breakfast, head to Monsieur Pierre, a cafe-deli hybrid serving up fresh, buttery croissants that transport you to Paris. Pair your pastry with a fantastic espresso. At lunchtime, take a short drive to Kyneton Ridge vineyard, a familyrun estate that underwent an impressive renovation in 2019.

Enjoy a hosted, seated wine tasting (the pinot noir is a standout) before settling down on the deck for share plates and pizza while taking in views of Blackhill Reserve. Come nightfall, the cosy Spaghetti Bar is the perfect place to finish up. The menu changes weekly, but expect to be taken on a tour of Italy’s regions with dishes including squid ink spaghetti with crab, agnolotti filled with local, seasonal produce and silky smooth panna cotta. The small but interesting wine list is mostly local, with Italian varieties. If you’ve got the stamina for one last stop, Animus Distillery, an award-winning small-batch gin producer, won’t disappoint. Choose a cocktail from its extensive menu or go all out with a gin flight, matched with interesting garnishes and wellpaired sodas.
