A renovation project is rarely a breeze. But Rebeka Morgan, the founder of BuildHer Collective, wants more women to have the confidence to embark on a real estate rejuvenation for profit or pleasure. BuildHer is a school for women who want to learn the building ropes, from selecting a property to the moment they crack the Moet in the new marble kitchen. In this edition, we meet Morgan and understand her motivation for starting the collective, whose graduates go on to create homes that dazzle on the market. ●

is teaching women to take charge of a home renovation.

hen Rebeka Morgan started BuildHer Collective in 2017, her purpose was to create a space that empowered women through the building and renovating process. She aimed to give novice renovators the tools to navigate what is usually a daunting task, and turn it into a brighter experience. Morgan created online courses, including a masterclass, where

women can learn the tricks of the trade, better understand the design and building model and arm themselves with the knowledge to undertake a massive project that sucks up time and energy. The courses come with access to the building experts, question-andanswer sessions and a trade discount system. But more than that, it’s about giving women the support they need when embarking on a large-scale project so they know what to expect from a builder and how to work with reputable suppliers. There’s a handy little black book of contacts and plenty of local suppliers to choose from. “With the cost of

living going up, the idea of retiring on our superannuation is a challenge, so as women we need to take some steps to create our own financial freedom,” says Morgan, a mother of six who started in construction management in her late 20s and registered as a builder six years ago. Her decision to start BuildHer Collective stems from an increasing number of women asking her how she manages to renovate and raise her family at the same time. And in the male-dominated industry of building, Morgan is all about giving women the confidence to speak up and avoid common mistakes. “Women would also come up to me to see how I was renovating homes; they had a lot of questions on how, why, what and when. They wanted

“We know women are the ones who play a huge role in the renovation game – they know how they want their homes to look, what rooms need to be larger, how they’ll see their family grow and evolve in that space. It’s important they’re part of the process from the vision to fruition.” Morgan, who grew up in Canterbury and bought her first house in Berwick before converting it into a rooming house when she was

20, says success takes time. She has a degree in construction management from RMIT, and although she no longer works in construction, she’s more than happy running her own show with a personal focus on joint building ventures and renovating existing homes. “You can’t go and buy into the forever home any more; you have to walk your way through a few different scenarios and look at ways you can improve the outcome,”

Morgan says. “It’s about giving up on thinking your kids will live in an amazing suburb from the get-go.” She loves nothing more than scouring the property market with her husband to find a suitable rundown home to be turned into a lavish offering, which they then sell. “We look at how to create value and appeal to the market the best way possible,” Morgan says. ● ● buildhercollective.com.au

It made sense to create the courses,” Morgan says. “These women often had a builder and were trying to deal with a lot of issues on all fronts. Often the relationships became tricky or overwhelming. “BuildHer is where you head to figure out the process from the beginning to avoid arguments, issues and problems. We try to solve problems before they crop up.” According to Morgan, once builder and client relationships are damaged, it can make getting on with the job much harder. “BuildHer Collective is about teaching you how to manage that relationship, what you should be asking your builder, and what you should be receiving in return. We wanted to set up a system to allow the build to be fun and smooth and get people to work out what they want from the process and not arrive at a point of saying, ‘if I only knew’,” Morgan says. The masterclass runs for 10 weeks and gives women a communal place to express their concerns, and network, learn budgeting tips and brainstorm.

orking from home is here to stay. Bosses have finally confirmed and enshrined a hybrid model, which many workers have come to expect and enjoy in a COVID-19 world. This has led to experts calling for safer practices when it comes to workers’ physical and mental health while working from home. Physiotherapist Jennifer Dodge, from the group The Office Athlete, who specialises in health and

wellness in the workplace, has seen it all when it comes to bad workfrom-home set-ups. This includes Zoom meetings from bedrooms or sitting at the dining table with a chair not designed for hours of meetings, or working from a comfy leather couch that was not made for working on a laptop. There are a few things that need to be taken into consideration as we establish a new working-fromhome normal.

Now is the time to get it right. “I think using the wrong desk and sitting in a chair that does not support you whatsoever while working long hours from home are two of the most common causes of posture, back and neck pain I am seeing, especially over the past two years,” Dodge says. “Working from home also limits those incidental but important movements that we’d normally tap into such as catching public transport, walking downstairs to get a coffee and so on, so workers really need to remind themselves to get up and move during the day while working from home to allow the body to stretch, and break up the time spent staring at a screen for long periods of time.”

As well as working from an adjustable and supportive chair, Dodge also recommends setting up a computer stand for your laptop and using an external keyboard to allow a relaxed forearm resting position on your desk at home. Clinical psychologist Dr Aileen Alegado says you need to look after your mental health working from home as you would in the office. This includes exercise, avoiding working where you sleep, having digital detoxes at night and staying

connected with your colleagues. That doesn’t mean online on Zoom calls or the ubiquitous Microsoft Teams. Instead, head out for a coffee every now and then with a colleague, just like in the old days. The big one for Alegado is separating work and home life. “It is very important to keep clear boundaries between your work and home life otherwise we can fall prey to becoming easily distracted and ineffective in running our day-today,” she says.

“When our brains don’t have clear associations when it is time for work or time for relaxation, not only does that affect our motivation but also our energies to make good decisions, memory and thinking. At its worst, a lack of boundaries can put us at risk for higher stress levels that can lead to depression and anxiety.” The consensus from both experts is that most employees and bigger companies are now adopting a hybrid model, with two or three days in the office, and the rest at home. ●
