It might sound strange, but I feel like I can relate to our gorgeous cover star Nicole Trunfio. Certainly not because I’m a leggy, glamorous model who’s strutted the catwalk for the biggest fashion brands in the business, but because I understand that feeling of “home” Trunfio gets when she comes back to Australia from her home in Austin, Texas. It was 12 years ago that I made Melbourne my home from a small country town and, while I love it here, there’s nothing like breathing in that fresh country air. ●

PLANNING As Melbourne gets bigger, how do we make it better?

City of the future

n the 20 years since soil was first turned on the piazza at Federation Square, Melbourne has been ceaselessly mushrooming up and out from its centre-point. The once-controversial bold architecture in the heart of city is now all-too-familiar to most Melburnians, but the metropolis surrounding Federation Square is becoming increasingly unrecognisable. In 1998, Melbourne’s population was an innocuous 3.3 million, the height aspirations of the city’s skyscrapers could only be described as humble, and large swathes of what we now call Melbourne were still paddocks. Although many could have guessed there was change in the air, few would have imagined the extent. The Australian Bureau of Statistics, for its part, forecast the city’s population would boom to just over 4 million by 2021. We’re already a city of nearly 5 million people – and it’s only 2018. But if you thought the city has changed in the past 20 years, steel yourself Melbourne. Because the one thing we know for sure about Melbourne in 2038 is that we’re going to be a lot bigger. And we’ll need to keep up.

Changing how we work

Welcome to Australia’s biggest city If the current population growth rate continues – and there’s no signs of it abating – Melbourne will overtake Sydney as Australia’s biggest city in just five years, says demographer Glenn Capuano of data consultancy .id. “In the next 20 years or so, we’re looking at six-and-a-half to seven million people,” he says. For context, seven million is bigger than Madrid or Houston, and creeping up on Hong Kong.

Melbourne will face major issues by 2038 if jobs continue to be centralised in the inner city, experts say. “Currently, all the jobs in health, finance, legal, design, IT, education, even the major health precincts, are mostly focused around the inner city,” says Patrick Fensham, SGS Economics principal. That’s a problem, he says, because not everyone has equal access to inner Melbourne and concentrating opportunities away from big groups of people creates major social dysfunction.

It also means most of those seven million Melburnians could be cramming on our already overloaded roads and public transport to get to the same place for work. “The idea that everyone has to travel in one direction is not sustainable,’’ says Capuano. “We really need to start creating jobs where people live.” So by 2038, Melbourne will need other major job hubs. Instead of commuting to the CBD, we will be travelling to Monash, Dandenong, La Trobe, Sunshine or Werribee to work. Futurist Peter Ellyard says a huge number of us will also work remotely: “Cafes will be used as offices,” he says. “People will have their meetings in the suburbs and we will encourage staggered working hours, so the peak-hour rush will conceivably disappear.”

The infrastructure we’ll need There’s no doubt governments are attempting to solve present transport issues, with billions recently announced for road and rail infrastructure in state and federal budgets. But experts say these projects are addressing problems we already have and do little for those we’ll face when the city is a third larger. “If we limit our agenda to the [projects already on the table], we’re just in catch-up mode,” Fensham says. The North-East Link should help ease some existing congestion by 2038, and we may have an iteration of the West Gate Tunnel or a resurrected East-West Link – depending on which party wins and maintains state government. But many believe we will be less car-reliant by then, with congestion tolls deterring people from driving in the inner city. We will embrace buses to link Melbourne’s radial train lines, leave roads mostly for commercial

vehicles, and share data through smart cars and infrastructure to help ease traffic jams. The Metro Tunnel will be long completed but, on top of that, a City of Melbourne research paper says we will need two more underground rail tunnels by 2035. Melbourne Metro 2 would link Newport to Clifton Hill via Fishermans Bend, with trains running out to Wyndham Vale and Mernda. Melbourne Metro 3 would run from Southern Cross Station, east to Doncaster and north to Tullamarine. A Melbourne Airport rail link will be one of the most important pieces of infrastructure needed by 2038. In 10 years, the number of trips made to and from the airport is expected to compare with Heathrow Airport today.

The CBD As the city continues to expand outwards, the CBD will rise upwards. Southbank is already destined for Crown Casino’s Queensbridge Hotel Tower (323 metres) and Australia 108 (319 metres). A cluster of skyscrapers will also emerge on the city’s western skyline, including West Side Place (270 metres) on the corner of Spencer and Lonsdale

Curved architecture will alter the monolithic skyline, with projects such as the Zaha Hadid-designed tower in Collins Street and the Beyonce-inspired Premier Tower on Spencer Street. Ellyard believes the CBD will also become more resident-focused, as many of the buildings used for office space are converted to apartments.

Liveable Melbourne If Melbourne can spread opportunities across the city, build a bigger public transport system that more people can access, cut car access and better use some of the space we already have, Federation Square will remain at the heart of a liveable city in 2038 (albeit with the addition of a controversial flagship Apple store). It’s a big job, but there’s no more amazing city up to the challenge. ●

But an appearance on one of the original reality shows on Australian television – Search For A Supermodel in 2002 – changed all that. At 16, after winning the competition, Trunfio left for New York, and has literally not stopped working since. getting on the plane for the Big Apple for the first time. “I was going to come back and study law at university. “So to hear you say I’ve been working for 16 years, it’s incredible, to be honest. “I’ve never felt better and I’ve never enjoyed my job more, and I’ve never been so grateful and humbled by it.” Trunfio is based out of Austin, Texas, with her husband, American musician Gary Clark Jr. The couple have two children, Gia, six months, and Zion, three. She introduced Gia to Australia for the first time in July, when she was

named the face of Chadstone’s 2018 spring/summer fashion campaign. When she returns to Australia, she always gets the same feeling, this is despite the fact she has spent half of her life living away from home. “You have your first soy latte, and your first breath of fresh air,” she says. “It’s nostalgia. “Australia has a really great family culture, you see all the kids running around. I need this to be part of my children’s upbringing, as much as possible.” Her children now are her top priority, so she chooses her work very

carefully. The job for Chadstone fitted in perfectly, and the trip home came at the right time. She loves the routine of being a mother, and she wants to set a good example for her children. “You have to take care of yourself as a mother, because the more you take care of yourself, the better you can be as a mother,” she says. “Your kids will always learn from that.” Trunfio seems genuinely happy with this new phase or her life – mother, wife and, of course, model. “I’m loving life, there are no complaints at all,” she says. ●

Thai chicken dumplings Ingredients (Serves 2) 250g chicken mince 15g garlic, minced 1 shallot, finely chopped 1 tsp roasted coriander seed, crushed Small handful of coriander roots, finely chopped 6 kaffir lime leaves, thinly sliced Sugar, a pinch 1 tsp cornflour ½ tsp vegetable oil 1 tsp fish sauce 20 dumpling wrappers Vegetable oil, for frying ½ cup water Nahm Jim dressing 1 long green chilli, finely chopped ½ bunch of coriander, finely chopped

1 garlic clove, minced 2 tbsp fish sauce ½ cup lime juice 2 tbsp palm sugar, grated ¼ cup water Method Start by making the dumplings. Place all the dry ingredients into a mixing bowl, add the oil and fish sauce, combine. Rest in the fridge, covered, for 30 minutes. ■ For the dresssing, combine fish sauce, palm sugar, lime juice and water. Whisk until sugar dissolves. Add the rest of the ingredients and set aside. ■ To make the dumplings, place the dumpling wrappers on a clean board, covered with a damp cloth to prevent drying out. There are many ways to fold ■

a dumpling and I used a round dumpling wrapper. Place one teaspoon of the dumpling mixture in the middle. Using your fingertip, wet the border of the wrapper with some water and fold the bottom over the top to close tightly. Make sure there are no air pockets. Now pinch the sides to overlap each other. Repeat for each dumpling. ■ Using a non-stick pan with a lid, place the pan on medium heat. Drizzle in some oil when it’s hot. Place the dumplings down and cook on one side for approximately 3-5 minutes. Add in ½ a cup of water and place the lid on and cook for another 3 minutes. ■ Remove from heat and serve in a platter with the dressing. ●

health and fitness, but desperate attempts being made to change hated things about themselves. This is when those people need a body-image bootcamp. I first heard the term from our 28 psychologist and body image expert, Sarah McMahon, and it is something that I think all of us need from time to time. A body image bootcamp involves shifting the focus away from changing your body to changing how you feel about your body. From my experience, even the fittest and leanest people have insecurities and something about themselves that they wish to change. When these insecurities begin to have negative impacts, on your work, relationships or other important parts of your day-to-day life, it’s time to work on building your body confidence. When reaching weight-loss goals isn’t enough or you practice negative body-checking behaviours (such as excessively weighing yourself), then you need to improve your body image. Trust me, I know that this isn’t easy and it’s certainly not going to happen overnight. For some people, this can be quite a long journey, particularly

ead of digital technologies Mark Schumann and year 12 student Zara Nicholls share a love of design. Having worked together since Zara was in year 9, both have learnt a lot from each other. This year, Zara’s IDM work was displayed as part of the VCE Top Designs Exhibition.

I’ve been at Yarra Valley Grammar since year 7 and I’ve always loved being creative. This year I’m the arts captain and so I’m working on the school’s Arts Week with other captains. I first became interested in digital design in my year 9 basic IT class designing logos. Mr Schumann introduced me to typography, graphic design and digital art using graphic tablets. I was initially nervous to do interactive digital media because I didn’t have any experience using digital design programs but, with Mr Schumann’s encouragement, I decided to take the class. It was one of the best decisions as I have learnt skills in programs and areas I never would have thought I would, such as website development and animation. It has been an honour to have my works displayed as part of the Top Designs Exhibition. Seeing the work of other students across the state that is all so individual and unique has inspired me. After I finish this year, I want to go to university and complete a creative design course to continue to learn more skills. I’ve thought about exploring the possibility of opening up an art cafe. I also sing and play the guitar so that would allow me to share my love of art and design with others. Mr Schumann is passionate about everything he does. He isn’t afraid to go above and beyond to help with work or my often crazy ideas. He’s taught me to be open minded. I’ve never heard him shut down a student’s idea – he is always willing to listen, help and will try his best to help them make an idea become a reality. Also, to never take the easy option. He embraces challenges and this has taught me to as well. I’ve also learnt to not be afraid of hard work and to just dive in. Mr Schumann is one of the most hard working people I have ever met. He’s taught me that hard work and effort does pay off and this has helped me to grow as a student and a person.

ZARA NICHOLLS & MARK SCHUMANN

MARK SAYS ... I’ve been at Yarra for about 12 years. I started in IT and I wanted a new challenge, a way of connecting and supporting the students more directly. It was really the great work of my colleagues who inspired me to teach. I completed my diploma of education in 2013 with media and IT as my methods. I’m very grateful that the school supported me as I made this transition. I’m the head of digital technologies, teaching media from years 10 to 12 and IT in middle school. That includes teaching skills such as web development, coding, filmmaking, visual design and animation to name a few. Technology is always changing and I’ve always liked learning new ideas and new technology, and particularly their implications. There’s always something new to learn. In year 12, media students complete a production throughout the year. The great benefit is that they have the scope to create products across a range of media forms such as film, print or animation. It’s also critical that students learn how the digital world that they engage with works so that they can

make more informed decisions and take greater control of their lives within these spaces. This could be anything from social media data aggregation to the way images can be manipulated to influence opinions. It’s been a great privilege working with Zara. From teaching her for basic IT in year 9 to IDM and media in VCE, she’s incredibly passionate about everything she does. She’s guided by her intuition and has a very clear picture of what she wants to accomplish. In this way it makes it easy to support her as we’re always on the same page. She’s also inspired by the stories of those close to her such as her family. These drive her ideas, which are represented in the products she creates. I was so proud to see her rewarded for all her effort when her animation and website were both accepted into Top Designs. Her unique ideas have always provoked great classroom discussions that inspire me to think differently and find new approaches in my teaching. Students like Zara have taught me about the importance of knowing your students’ passions and helping them find ways to bring these into the classroom. I’m very lucky that I have the scope to do that in the subjects that I teach. ●

s the principal of Fintona Girls’ School, and a mathematics teacher with decades of experience, Rachael Falloon still gets advice, and from the most unexpected places. “I was in a taxi at the very start of this year. It was early January and I was going home from work,” Falloon explains. “The taxi driver said, ‘What do you mean you’re working? Don’t you have holidays?’ And I explained that I’d just started a new role and he went on to tell me this heartfelt story about his relationship with his mother and of her wisdom. ‘‘He said to me, ‘All you need is patience and to listen’. “And I thought what wise words, because there is so much wisdom and knowledge in people working in any environment, and schools are no different. “Taking the time to listen and getting to know the community is such an important thing to do.” At Fintona, Falloon has applied herself to getting to know the community since the start of the year when she took on the job of principal. ‘‘I was working around the corner at Camberwell Grammar as the deputy head. The reputation of Fintona, a leading girls’ school, really attracted me to the role. “I think the size also attracted me. I’m someone who likes to be part of a community and I think the size – being smaller than most – provided me with a great entree into my first principalship.” Before becoming an educational leader, Falloon was a mathematics teacher, inspired by her own female teachers to follow their career path. “I had fabulous teachers from my very first year at school,’’ she says. “I had women who encouraged and inspired me – pushed me in a whole range of areas. I think because I had such inspirational women as teachers it just seemed a natural course to follow them into education.” Falloon began her teaching career in Warragul, before moving interstate to Western Australia and then back to Melbourne, teaching in both co-ed and single-sex schools. She is passionate about the education of girls. “I think single-sex education and girls’ education is about the fact that anything is possible. There are no stereotypes, we work on the premise that you can be the best you can be, whatever your passion,”

Falloon says. “We have a very strong science community here, we have really good specialist maths class sizes, we have girls who play football, girls who are talented musicians. It doesn’t matter what you choose to do, you can be successful.”

Though she has been principal such a short time, Falloon says she has learnt a lot about Fintona. “I’ve learnt it is a tight-knit community, that it is really warm, that the staff genuinely love working here and are, like me, passionate about educating girls.” And while she may have been on the receiving end of a lot of advice, Falloon also has some guidance to offer, particularly for those wanting to become a teacher. “It’s one of the most rewarding careers you can ever have. I think the ability to transform other people’s lives to watch them grow, to be inspired is a wonderful experience. ‘‘It is a job where you never stop learning.” ● MELISSA HEAGNEY

From the High Line Park in New York City to reclaimed docklands in Stockholm, the world is full of examples of forwardthinking planners, designers and community members who have seen potential in old and forgotten corners of the urban landscape. So what do the world’s best urban renewal projects have in common? We spoke to planning, design and development experts.

Ashley Bramich, sales and marketing director of YarraBend in Alphington, which will turn an old paper mill site into a mixed-use residential project, says the High Line sets a global standard for developers hoping to leverage existing architecture for a new purpose. “There’s nothing like going to a place where there’s a story to tell.”

She cites the example of False Creek South in Vancouver, which turned an industrial park into a mix of affordable and for-profit housing, gardens, courtyards and green space. “Thought went into how people of various ages are going to live and how they’re going to need the appropriate services and infrastructure,” says Whitzman. HAMMARBY SJÖSTAD IN STOCKHOLM: INVESTING IN INFRASTRUCTURE \ Hammarby Sjöstad was an industrial area surrounding a lake in central Stockholm until the 1980s, when city planners and private companies began to turn it into a sustainable city district for 25,000 people. It has a focus on environmentally friendly infrastructure, including a plan for residents to produce much of their own energy through solar panels, recycled waste water and biofuel. YarraBend, a 14.5-hectare development on the site of the former Amcor Paper Mill in Alphington, has drawn inspiration from around the globe. “We travelled the world and tried to get to the bottom of what encapsulates a great urban renewal project,” says Bramich, YarraBend’s sales and marketing director. YarraBend will highlight the site’s industrial heritage through the reuse of old buildings and materials. But it has also been built to improve residents’ lives by future standards of liveability, such as convenience, connectivity and wellbeing, according to research conducted by international trend forecaster The Future Laboratory. The project includes a co-working centre, free wifi for residents in parks, an IT concierge, Scandinavian road design to encourage cycling and walking and an app connecting residents to surrounding amenities. “Our research finds that factors that will influence liveability in the future boil down to how communities can be optimised

Locals and tourists alike now flock to Melbourne CBD’s famous music venues, laneway bars and theatres, but it was only about 25 years ago that the city was a run-down ghost town. “I’d say one of the best examples of urban renewal in Melbourne is the CBD itself, which went from having very few people living there in the 1980s to many thousands of people now,” Whitzman says.
