Apart from the toll on the economy and individual businesses, one of the biggest issues to come out of the pandemic is the effect of such massive change on peoples’ mental health. There are worrying numbers of children affected, and many adults, too, are reporting poor mental health. There are numerous approaches to take, and for this week’s cover star, Demon Max Gawn, mental health was of particular importance over the course of 2020. Now regularly employing mindfulness in his life, his is an interesting story. ●

FASHION Emma Addams is back in black with an AC/DC range. Wo r d s

or Heart of Bone founder Emma Addams and her brother Lenny, working with AC/DC – who made their famous video clip A Long Way to the Top in Melbourne’s Swanston Street in 1976 – is a childhood dream come true. The Melbourne label is the first to collaborate with the band on a limited edition range of jewellery and clothing. Conversations began in 2019, so the collection, which also features cashmere sweaters made from the Chanel-owned House of Barrie in Scotland, has been a labour of love and determination. “AC/DC was the first concert I ever went to when I was 13,” says Addams from her Collingwood studio. “If you had asked me back when I first started Heart of Bone, with a five-month-old baby, who my dream collaborations of my career would be, I honestly could never have imagined this.”

It all ties in with the 40th anniversary of the band’s Back in Black release. Long before the AC/DC collaboration, Heart of Bone had already made inroads with celebrities and musicians around the world, including Billie Eilish, who discovered the label in 2019 and created a frenzy when she appeared wearing a bunny ring. In Australia, the label is stocked at David Jones, and the range comes packed with plenty of grunt: think embellished skulls, daggers, bones and hearts themed with rock’n’roll debauchery. It was Addams’ brother Lenny’s idea to start a

separate business, Custom Creed, that would link what they do with luxury rockwear for the music industry. There’ll be more collaborations on the way after the AC/DC coup. “To provide a steady income stream to try and make up some of the losses from touring and live music grinding to a halt made sense,” Addams says. Through blood, sweat and tears, Addams has come through and lived to tell. A divorce from her husband of 18 years took its toll last year. She home-schooled their two children, all while trying to navigate the AC/DC deal and working from home during lockdowns. “But we’re back, and this time, nothing is going to stop us. I suddenly knew everything in my life had given me the skills I’d need for what was coming, and my life was changed forever. “It hit me that freedom was on the other side of fear, and I was getting there whatever way I could,” she says.” ● ● heartofbone.com

Lululemon’s newest ambassador breaks down the barriers of mental health.

ll-Australian, best and fairest, club captain: Max Gawn’s on-field credentials are immense. But a new foray off-field and outside the football environment has him hoping for even further sporting success. The Melbourne captain, naturally a players’ player to whom his teammates gravitate, is arguably one of the greatest ruckmen seen in the game in decades. The Demon – pick 34 in the 2009 AFL draft and a firm fan favourite – also has a lively entrepreneurial spirit and has strong community connections. It’s this off-field strength he plans to build further, now joining forces with athleisurewear company Lululemon as a brand ambassador. “Mental health, mindfulness and fitness are three things that I’m pretty passionate about,” Gawn says.“Mental health, in particular, is something that I’ve come to appreciate more as my career has progressed. I’ve witnessed first-hand how impactful it can be and how important a good mental state is for professional sport. “There’s a range of things footballers can get involved in, and I’m at a stage in my life where I’m really hoping to associate with brands that share the same values I do.” On the day of our interview, Gawn is driving from his new Mornington Peninsula home in Blairgowrie. The recent sea change gives him the chance to be closer to the water; a decision made to enhance his mindfulness. “I have daily mindfulness practices that help me, and as a leader, I encourage all players to do the

same. Part of my mindfulness routine is a visit to the beach,” he says. “I’ll simply walk along the beach with no technology, which helps me keep a level head. “I’m also big on keeping a notepad and recapping my day. I love to know why I’m feeling a certain way throughout the day. From that, I’m able to make that connection between stress and underperformance.” Gawn is adjusting to life back home after what was a tumultuous year. The rollercoaster ride of 2020 saw AFL players become accustomed to life in the “hub” – a bubblelike quarantine facility where players would eat, train, play and sleep, on repeat. Although the hubs proved essential for the game’s survival, many players found themselves away from family and friends, and harbouring mental and physical health repercussions related to the insular nature of a 21-week quarantine. But with the role of captain comes the inherent responsibility of uplifting the playing cohort, providing a shoulder to lean on. “Fortunately, I was able to see [the hub] quite differently to a lot of other players and people involved; I had to,” Gawn says. “Players had different circumstances and different experiences, but I was glad I was able to keep a level head to be able to assist my teammates, which was important to me. “As a football player, it’s really important to be able to switch off from the game, and it’s one of the hardest things we tend to struggle with. That’s potentially what the hub escalated because you were constantly surrounded by football.” Gone are the days when hardened AFL players would ignore inner feelings of struggle, stress and hurt, and would suffer in silence. And although the hub life was a trigger for some, it also enabled a positive conversation to exist in a space thought otherwise.

“The topic of mental health is certainly becoming more prevalent within the AFL,” Gawn says. “I also believe our industry is also doing a good job in leading the space for the rest of society. “We’ve had lots of cases recently where players have had the chance to take time off without any judgment from coaches, staff members, teammates and supporters, which is great to see. “In today’s world with COVID and lockdowns and everything else, I believe that our AFL players are leading the charge with the topic of mental health, so I’m really proud of our industry at the moment.”

t’s a far cry from 2004, when former Hawk Nathan Thompson became the first AFL player to publicly disclose he had depression, only to be told such an announcement would curtail his career. Gawn notes much has changed, and 2021 is a different time: “That’s where football is going; we’re not stuck in the Stone Age where players are made to be how the club wants them to be ... we want them to be who they want to be.” Away from the game, Gawn enjoys the idleness of a small beach town, coupled with his love for his family. In his role as Lululemon ambassador, he is looking to help spread the message of mindfulness and the importance of keeping a healthy mind - two things he encourages all to explore. “There is still a stigma around mindfulness, but I don’t see it that way. The whole thing around mindfulness is just about finding that balance: find something that suits you. If it’s meditation, it’s meditation. If it’s a walk, it’s a walk,” he says. “Find something that keeps you in the present.” ● ● lululemon.com.au

Full of hidden natural delights to discover, the Maranoa Botanic Gardens is one of the oldest and most impressive native gardens in the country. Entering the suburban Balwyn park, I can almost hear the trickle of its rainforest waterfall, concealed just beyond a green glade. Benches sit nestled in surrounding native shrubbery, shaded by various trees and foliage – the muted colours of the southern Australian bush enhanced by birdsong. The gardens have always been a botanist’s dream. When they opened in 1919, about 500 people attended to see the new expanse of native flora from Australia and New Zealand, uncharacteristic of a time when English gardens were de rigueur. There are more than 4000 native plant species here, and placards along the paths educate me. While it isn’t a spot for ball games or dog walks, there are toilets and heaps of space for a picnic. I pass the Indigenous plant display – a gorgeous area made up of predominantly grassy woodland

species. One of the more striking flowers I come across is the fuchsia heath, or Epacris longiflora, a bell-shaped, red-and-white beauty. This educational aspect makes it such a great place for teaching kids about native ecosystems. WHO WILL YOU FIND THERE?

The park is serenely quiet, except for the birds. I walk around its circumference in complete solitude before I come across two older ladies, who chat to each other and point to the top of the trees. Closer towards the rainforest zone, the pleasant sound of running water crescendos. There’s a vinecovered arch that looks and feels entirely magical. As I pass through, the roof of the canopy hangs low and I need to crouch slightly to see the falls and a creek that runs under a tiny bridge. I emerge onto the park’s main path and walk to an arid region, where there are crooked oaks and bursts of orange banksias. I meet Chris and Steve, who have lived in the area for about 30 years.

he Early Childhood Learning Centre at Wesley College is a place where children begin an educational journey enjoyed by students across the globe. The College is one of 5000 schools in more than 150 countries that offers the International Baccalaureate (IB) and, since 2003, the IB has been offered to Wesley’s youngest students. Children as young as three years of age take part in the IB Primary Years Program, which encourages the development of the whole child alongside personal and academic achievement. “If parents ask me the greatest features of the Primary Years Program, I tell them it’s all about the way we teach. The IB focuses on inquiry learning, adopting a hands-on approach and teachers knowing the individual child,” explains Jacinta Janssens, Head of Elsternwick Campus. “The IB also embraces international mindedness, and our students learn the importance of having a local understanding and a global perspective.” As part of the Primary Years Program, students from prep to year 6 learn Chinese and follow six units of inquiry that incorporate social studies, science, technology and health. The units comprise: “Who we are”, “Where we are in place and time”, “How we express ourselves”, “How the world works”, “How we organise ourselves” and “Sharing the planet”. They all fit together to provide a broad learning framework. Within these units, connections are made across disciplines to build deeper knowledge. “When you make connections and teach skills across disciplines, you deepen understanding. Teachers and specialists collaborate and tap into what is happening in the core classroom to enable students to see things from different perspectives,” says Janssens. At the heart of all IB programs is the learner profile that encourages students to be inquirers, knowledgeable, thinkers, communicators, principled, open-minded, caring, risk-takers, balanced and reflective. Even in Wesley’s early childhood program, these attributes are nurtured. “The ECLC is play-based, but through a structured program we teach students about different cultures and encourage them to be open-

minded and to think about their role in the different communities to which they belong - their family, the school and the local community. We don’t teach formal literacy and numeracy at this stage, but we encourage the children to be questioning and to develop their communication skills,” says Janssens. The Primary Years Program also builds problemsolving skills and, instead of formal rules being put in place, students and educators negotiate essential agreements. “Children articulate how they want to be and why, and if they make a choice that doesn’t reflect their principles, we use restorative practices. We talk things through and help the child come to an appropriate response themselves,” says Janssens. Wesley’s motto, “Dare to be wise”, aligns perfectly with the IB philosophy in that it encourages individuals to try new and different things with which they may not be as familiar or comfortable to help them learn and grow.

The end of the Primary Years Program is celebrated with a special exhibition in which year 6 students showcase what they have learned from their IB journey. Children choose a concept within a transdisciplinary theme, such as the environment, and then explore a related issue. Their investigation culminates in a presentation to inform and educate their peers and the school community. “Children choose something they feel passionate about and embark on a journey to explore, document and show their understanding of that issue. They work with mentors to reflect on what they have learned and achieved,” says Janssens. “When our students finish year 6, they are extremely capable. They’re good at asking questions and articulating their thinking, they’re confident, and they have a voice and agency. They are actively engaged in their learning and are ready to be challenged in the next stage of their journey at Wesley.” ● SARAH MARINOS
