Keystone Terraces, Lyneham

A SPACE TO DOWNSIZE WITHOUT COMPROMISE

Keystone Terraces have been thoughtfully designed to support independent living today while providing the flexibility to adapt for tomorrow. Purpose-built for ageing in place, every residence features step-free transitions, wide hallways and doorways, generous circulation spaces, adaptable bathrooms and a private internal lift supporting wheelchair accessibility. Living areas have been carefully planned to allow comfortable wheelchair manoeuvring, while the future-proof design enables mobility upgrades and in-home care with minimal modification if needs change. Located just 50 metres from Lyneham Shops, Keystone Terraces combine accessibility, independence and low-maintenance living in one of Canberra' s most established Inner North neighbourhoods. For a limited time, purchasers can also take advantage of a development incentive of up to $30,000, which can be used towards furniture, whitegoods or taken as a cash contribution at settlement. Combined with recent ACT Government stamp duty concessions for eligible owner-occupiers, purchasers may achieve total savings of more than $100,000, making the move to a new home more affordable than ever.

Note from the editor

There is joy in fnding a property that captures the optimistic spirit of the 1960s while embracing the demands of today. Our cover home this week is a standout O’Connor residence that strikes that balance. Infused with desert-oasis charm, Mellow Yellow House is a triumph of light and texture. Vivid, citrus-toned exteriors give way to a breezy layout anchored by a plant-flled atrium. The interplay of timber, cork, and tile creates a nostalgic atmosphere without feeling dated. The real magic, however, lies in its forward-thinking upgrades. With robust thermal credentials and renewable power, it proves that mid-century charm and 21st-century living are a match made in heaven.

Mid-century mellow vibe

It’s always sunny at 183a Miller Street, O’Connor – a refined mid-century modern home known affectionately as the Mellow Yellow House.

The three-bedroom duplex exudes a distinct Palm Springs vibe, says listing agent Theo Koutsikamanis of Bastion Property Group.

The rooms wrap around an internal courtyard, offering an indoor-outdoor flow. White interiors are complemented by pops of colour, from the lemon facade and front door to the peachy kitchen and olive tiles in the living area.

Exposed brick, recycled timber, cork flooring, custom cabinetry and antique brass accents honour the era.

The retro design is matched by exceptional energy efficiency, solar integration and provisions for EV charging. A built-in study nook, a large butler’s pantry and an outdoor entertaining area with its own kitchen cater to a contemporary lifestyle. For sale by negotiation, the Mellow Yellow House is where timeless design meets modern performance. Lucy Jones

Behind its classic Canberra red brick exterior, this home may surprise you. Its solid 1960s bones have been updated and expanded, resulting in a modern, versatile property. Large windows and skylights food the rooms with light, while an internal patio redefnes indoor-outdoor living. Natural textures create warmth, from the hybrid timber fooring to the built-in cabinetry and cosy wood fre. It’s set back from the street and surrounded by established gardens, so you’ll appreciate the quietness of your new neighbourhood.

NAt home with space and grace

ew blocks around Canberra are generally shrinking in size, while others are increasingly being rezoned to ofer higher-density dwellings.

However, there are parts of Canberra where history and neighbourhood character set the standard, and blocks are generous, expensive and tightly held.

Andrew Chamberlain of Blackshaw Manuka, who lists this week’s feature property, says Inner South suburbs like Red Hill and Forrest are unique.

“It would be hard to fnd equivalents in any state capital that have such big

blocks so close to the CBD,” he says. “We can trace that to earlier times in Canberra’s growth when blocks in those areas were ofered from 2000 square metres up – and often several times bigger.”

Chamberlain says that’s generally how they remain today, and “that combination of location, grand homes and large landholdings contributes to the aspirational appeal of Red Hill and Forrest”.

Stephen Thompson of LJ Hooker Manuka says there can be signifcant

family wealth in these suburbs, and homes tend to be tightly held.

“These are often generational properties that can stay in the same family for decades,” he says. “Part of the appeal is in the spaciousness of the blocks and the privacy that mature plantings, such as trees and hedging, deliver. They all add to a feeling of exclusivity and sanctuary.”

Thompson says considerations like heritage protections and the preservation of neighbourhood character provide certainty for home owners and buyers.

INNER SOUTH BLOCKBUSTERS

Heritage scale

Big blocks with deep setbacks, mature trees and generous breathing room give a gardencity feeling. Buyers love the sense of history and charm.

Neighbourhood character

Wide frontages, open lawns and established greenery create a relaxed, leafy vibe. It’s the experience people value – soft streetscapes and a neighbourhood that says “home”.

Long-term stability

Larger parcels offer privacy, peace and a sense of permanence close to the city. Owners appreciate the steady feel of the neighbourhood, comfort, and long-term confidence in property value.

Vancouver Street is one of the most prestigious addresses in Red Hill, and a dress-circle location needs a home to match. The house at No. 5 lives up to the billing.

This luxury residence enjoys a highly private setting on almost 2100 square metres, amid a dense screening of mature trees, hedges and established plantings.

The three-level home delivers 556 square metres of living space, though it

is “living” on a whole new level.

A marble-tiled foyer leads into an expansive, rich-timber-floored living zone that includes formal lounge and dining rooms, a billiards/media room, and the kitchen and family rooms.

The formal lounge is highlighted by a fireplace and enhanced by curved windows framing a garden outlook.

The kitchen provides its own statement with branded appliances –including a Gaggenau oven and Franke

There are four bedrooms on this level, one with an en suite, and a separate study or home office.

Stacker doors lead onto an expansive covered terrace with an outdoor kitchen, a spectacular swimming pool, and a lounge area.

six-star en suite and a generous walk-in wardrobe.

The lower level offers a teenager’s retreat with a kitchenette, gym, wine storage, workshop and parking for seven vehicles, along with storage.

Where design meets nature

This Deakin home was crowned ACT Home of the Year last year, and you certainly don’t have to look hard to see why.

The house sits elevated on the hillside, making the most of views from the Brindabellas to Parliament House.

Covering more than 600 square metres across three levels, it’s clear that every detail has been considered, from the commercial-grade lift connecting each foor to the cantilevered architecture that gives it such a commanding presence.

Natural stone and walnut joinery carry the tone throughout. The showpiece kitchen is wrapped in extensive marble, extending across the oversized island and splashback, while integrated appliances and a full butler’s pantry ensure it’s every bit as practical as it is beautiful.

A three-sided marble freplace anchors the main living space, with walls of glass opening onto expansive entertaining terraces with stretching views.

Every single bedroom is its own sanctuary. The elevated main-bedroom

“The sheer scale and consistency of the highquality detail, combined with the level of amenity, make this home exceptionally rare. It is the perfect collaboration of architecture and nature.”  suite features a skylit dressing room, make-up station and a luxurious en suite. Three additional bedrooms include their own en suites, skylights and space for a study, while a separate guest wing, cinema, gym and multiple living spaces provide fexibility.

Outside, the luxury continues with a heated mineral pool and spa, a cedar sauna, a resort-style cabana with a builtin barbecue, and a sunken fre pit that might just be Canberra’s best spot to watch the sun go down.

DESIGN

The power of a colourful palette

Creative colour pairings are emerging as a defning feature of modern interiors, ofering a more layered alternative to neutral-led palettes.

From sunlit yellow and merlot to blues grounded in chocolate brown, designers are embracing expressive colour combinations that move beyond safe neutrals. For Shannon Shlom of We are Duet, the most compelling palettes push boundaries. “The most rewarding combinations are those that edge into unfamiliar territory … it feels more considered, and joyful,” she says. Here, top colour alchemists reveal their perfect palettes to bring spaces to life through inventive, considered colour.

Peacock hour

“Aubergine paired with teal ofers a deep, immersive palette,” says Shlom. “It thrives on depth through layering and nuance, such as lustrous silk, weaves, or richly grained timber.”

Architecture and light should guide the palette. “Instead of standard dark blue, explore teal that is less obvious yet grounded in nature,” says Dominique Brammah from We are Duet. “Each element carries weight, but it’s the balance that defnes the outcome.”

Sunny-side up

“Colour is a cost-efective way to generate an emotional response. When used with intent, it can completely shift how a space feels,” says Nick Browne of Goldie Homes.

“I’m drawn to Dulux’s Happy Yellow paired with Natural White for its sense of sunshine, playfulness and optimism against a calm, crisp backdrop,” he says. Browne begins with a base colour running from exterior to interior for a calm, cohesive thread, then layers in colour to create a mood.

Too soft? Too bold? Just right “Unexpected soft and strong pairings that pique that Goldilocks’ just right’ moment is my ideal combination,” says designer Juliette Arent from Arent & Pyke. “When combined, they’re neither overpowering nor underwhelming.”

For a living space in a home in Sydney’s Elizabeth Bay, Arent paired a caramel oak table with cobalt legs against

purple and green tones. “In living rooms, natural light is key in determining shades,” she says.

“If light is lacking, I uplift the walls with an energising colour, then balance it with darker, patterned rugs with grounding spice notes.”

Breezy, bright and toasty

“I’m drawn to blues paired with earthen browns,” says designer Brahman Perera. “Blue brings lightness while brown is grounding. Handled with restraint, it feels familiar yet contemporary, lifting the density of natural fnishes to create a calm atmosphere rather than a decorative one.” Brammah is drawn to a palette in which earthy paprika meets blue. “The warmth of paprika brings emotional intensity, while blue ofers a sense of calm, creating a layered experience that feels both evocative and composed.” Melbourne studio SSdH layers these tones against timber and stone.

“We have a soft spot for blue and brown, such as a deep blue bathroom sitting alongside a spotted gum timber hallway,” says director Jean-Marie Spencer.

Rosé all day

Shona McElroy from SMAC Studio balances expressive colours by leaning on muted tones. “It allows a space to embrace colour while still feeling liveable,” she says, citing pink, which feels instantaneously sophisticated and playful.

“We tend to be more subdued and upmarket in the kitchen; however, take me to the powder room, bathroom, or bedroom, and things change!

Trufe

THE LOCAL EDIT

Unfolding from now until August each year, trufe season has become one of the most delicious experiences on the ACT’s culinary calendar, seeing top restaurants and producers testing their skills to treat foodies to their paddock-toplate creations.

The Perigord trufe – also known as the French black trufe or “black gold” –is a species of trufe native to Southern Europe. It is one of the most expensive edible fungi in the world, prized for its intense, earthy taste.

The Canberra region’s microclimate perfectly mimics the traditional trufegrowing regions of France – its cold winters and warm, dry summers are perfect for the rare fungus to thrive. With many farms under an hour’s drive from the city centre, the ACT trufe region is also unique because it’s one of the only places in the world where you can experience a commercial trufe hunt within a capital city’s limits.

Take, for example, Beltana Farm in Pialligo. Home to a trufe farm of over 800 trees, it hosts various events and activities for people to immerse themselves in during the season – from guided hunts to long lunches and intimate trufe masterclasses. Their Unearthed Tasting Menu is also designed with trufe lovers in mind, celebrating the best of the farm and the region.

Left: Amid the trufferie of over 800 trees, dig into rustic charm and contemporary luxury at Beltana Farm.

During trufe season, a visit to The Trufe Farm is a must. Surrounded by a picturesque oak tree forest and boasting captivating views of Mount Majura Winery’s lush vine-covered trellises, here trufe lovers can immerse themselves in a true farm-to-fork adventure.

With the option to book in for a traditional trufe hunt or indulge in either the Hunt + Brunch or the Hunt + Degustation, guests are taken on an exhilarating trufe hunt experience where they learn about the farm’s history before diving into a decadent trufe-

focused meal. A chaufeur-driven tour and dining experience, in partnership with QT Canberra, is also available on August 8 for $229 per person.

Just a short drive down the road, the Mount Majura Vineyard Trufed Brie and Wine Tasting is also a must-do during winter. Using fresh trufe from their neighbours at The Trufe Farm, a deliciously rich triple-cream brie-style cheese is paired with a fight of three matched Mount Majura Vineyard wines for a decadent seasonal experience.

Or why not take a road trip this winter to Bungendore for a tour that blends French heritage with Australian charm? Chef Christophe and Josephine Gourmet Tours and Experiences hosts a trufe hunt experience, led by Chef Christophe (a recipient of France’s prestigious National Order of Agricultural Merit) and his wife Josephine.

After foraging for black trufes with spirited border collie, Largo, guests

enjoy a rustic French brunch of delights such as egg brouillard on a warm baguette with lashings of shaved fresh trufe, a fresh salad, and more. And did you know that Australia’s only biodynamic trufe farm is located just over an hour from Canberra?

A small family-run, certifed organic and biodynamic trufe farm in the southern tablelands of NSW, Elvesgate Trufe Farm in Harolds Cross, hosts an immersive trufe-themed experience that includes a hunt with their Labrador Billy and a feast by the fre pit. There are also family-friendly sessions.

This winter, everybody’s trufin’.
