BACARDI® Newport Sailing Week. Featured at Newport Regatta® - July 13-15, 2012
ot on the heels of the America’s Cup World Series, Sail Newport remained a hotbed of activity as Rhode Island’s community sailing center next hosted one of the summer’s most diverse sailing events – The Newport Regatta® featuring BACARDI® Newport Sailing Week Presented by EFG. Over 200 boats entered the regatta which provided competition in 19 one-design classes. Among them were the J/80, Star and Viper 640 classes which raced for both the Newport Regatta and BACARDI Newport Sailing Week trophies. The J/24 class had the largest number of boats registered as that class was also competing for their Northeast Regional Championship, along with a berth to the 2013 J/24 World Championship for the top-finishing U.S. helmsperson not previously qualified. The Etchells class used the regatta to determine their Atlantic Coast Champion, the 505s their Region 1 Champion and the Vanguard 15s their Atlantic Coast Champion, making for a total of five classes using the event to determine a major class championship. Marking its 28th year of competition, the Newport Regatta has become one of the largest multi-class events on the east coast. Also racing was A Class catamarans, Club 420, J/22, J/105, Laser, Laser Radial, Sunfish, Swan 42, Snipe, VX One and 49er classes, bringing together nearly 1,000 sailors from 15 states and several countries to compete. The talents of more than 100 skilled volunteers from Ida Lewis Yacht Club, New York Yacht Club, Newport Yacht Club, Coasters Harbor Navy Yacht Club and Barrington Yacht Club was called upon to run the massive event. Savoring the Sea with Sailing Heals he beautiful coastal areas of Marblehead and Nantucket, MA along with Newport, RI have been the back drop for many healing sails this August for Massachusetts-based Sailing Heals. The nonprofit, who takes VIP Patient Guests out for healing days on the water thanks to volunteer Host Captains, has arranged for many of their sails this month to be tied into the 2012 Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge N. A. Circuit. Many sailors, guests and members of the media were on hand at all three beautiful New England classic yacht regattas, that make up the PCYC circuit to take in the beautiful vistas and highly competitive racing. Sailing Heals Executive Director Trisha Boisvert credits founding sponsor Panerai for helping them deliver such great experiences. “Panerai saw a true opportunity to engage in their clients’ communities and put up, not only the seed money to get the healing sails off the ground and in the waves so to speak, but has also included Sailing Heals guests in spectacular, oncein-a-lifetime events such as the reception on the Tall Ship Pride of Baltimore II in Nantucket.” Nantucket resident and cancer patient Shelley Ferguson, who attended the Pride of Baltimore II event as well as a healing sail, had this to offer: “There is an indescribable feeling that I got from actually being on the water. Maybe this is what pure happiness is? To watch my husband and son happily engaged in the running of the ship was a joy! I spent the day relaxing and letting them - and the crew - do all the work. These are memories that will be savored and shared for years.” With the sails tied to the PCYC, Sailing Heals will have taken out over 40 VIP patient guests, plus their caregivers, in New England alone this season to savor the healing powers of the sea. Improvements continue at Williams Island Marina illiams Island Marina in Aventura has begun construction of a new marina office. The marina, located in Aventura on the 80-acre island known as The Florida Riviera, recently completed an expansion and upgrade project that added 600 feet of new dockage and enhanced electrical services. The expansion increased the total slips to 106, with 1000 feet of 3-phase electric power and allows for vessels up

to 160 feet with a maximum draft of 8 feet. A pump-out system for 22 slips was added, as well as a portable pump-out cart. With that phase of improvements completed, the focus is now on construction of a new marina office, complete with crew facilities and covered parking for marina customers. The new office will be located on the ground floor of the Bellini residential tower, the last residential tower to be built at Williams Island. Construction is in progress and the new office is scheduled to open Summer of 2013. Residency requirements do not apply at the marina so the new facilities were designed to meet the specific needs of marina customers. Input from current dock tenants and crew members provided valuable insight to the needs of both longterm and transient customers. The new office facilities will include improved amenities for owners and crew, including showers, laundry and crew room. Dockage at Williams Island includes free club membership access to the Williams Island Resort including clubhouse, restaurants, tennis, spa and fitness center. With access to world-class amenities and a location conveniently located between Ft. Lauderdale and Miami, Williams Island is often a destination marina for vacationing yachters. The improved office facilities are the finishing touches to a world-class marina experience. For more information or to make an appointment, call 305-937-7813 or visit www.williamsislandmarina.com

he classic sailing world is preparing for the most spectacular event of the season which this year also celebrates a firsttime alliance of absolute excellence. Officine Panerai is the Atlantic Yacht Club’s new partner in the Panerai Transat Classique 2012. The regatta will see a fleet of dozens of stunning classic sailing yachts cast off on December 2nd from Cascais, in Portugal, home to the prestigious Clube Naval de Cascais, and race their way across the Atlantic Ocean for the Caribbean haven of Barbados. The yachts may also accumulate points for the final standings in the course of two preliminary races, participation in which is optional. The first one started from Douarnenez in Brittany (July 22nd 2012) and the second will set sail from Saint-Tropez (October 25th 2012), before the entire fleet gathers in Cascais to race its way across the Atlantic. The first race was won by Persephone, a 1969 Dick Carter design owned by Yves Lambert. Mowgli and Gweneven came in second and third respectively. Almost 40 yachts have already entered this edition of the Panerai Transat Classique and amongst them are some of the most famous names in sailing history, including Pen Duick II, Moonbeam IV, Marianna and The Blue Peter. The winner will be presented with an Officine Panerai Special Edition watch (500 pieces) with the Panerai Transat Classique 2012 logo engraved on its case-back.

n August 11th and 12th, Corinthian Yacht Club (Marblehead, MA) hosted the harbor’s most beautiful yacht regatta of the season. The 2012 Corinthian Classic Yacht Regatta, presented by Officine Panerai, provided visions of yesteryear’s yachting landscape. In the first of a three-part series which includes Nantucket Opera House Cup and Newport’s Museum of Yachting Regatta, this Panerai North American Challenge is one of the most premiere events on the yachting calendar. The 2012 Corinthian Classic welcomed a record-breaking 68 yachts for two days of spectacular racing. Although the weekend’s forecast was threatening, sailors enjoyed two days of near perfect conditions and courses that routed through the small rocky islands and lighthouses of Massachusetts’ North Shore. Saturday’s 15-knot breeze was the heartier of the two days, yet Sunday’s wind direction kept tacticians focused with crowded mark roundings and clean lanes. As immense classics Spartan (NY50) and Black Watch (68’ Yawl) vied for mark room near smaller yachts such as Aquila (27’

Herreshoff S-boat) and Sea Robin (Little Harbor 37’), spectators and competitors alike witnessed a picturesque backdrop that paralleled the early days of Marblehead racing. After Saturday’s racing, owners, captains and crew enjoyed a treasured evening of fine dining and a tremendous presentation by naval architect Halsey Herreshoff, grandson to renowned America’s Cup and Classic yacht designer Nathanael Greene Hereshoff. As Halsey brought the captivated audience down a nostalgic maritime course, listeners looked out upon many of his grandfather’s designs resting on moorings throughout the harbor. Halsey recalled his introduction to the CYC and said that whoever modeled the club did everything very well “...except for those rocks outside the window.” His “S” boat was moored in Marblehead at the time of a hurricane and ended up on the rocks outside the dining room window. Halsey’s detailed chronology of the family’s beginnings as hard working immigrants to the creators of patented inventions, engineering marvels and yachting design prominence were fascinating and sprinkled with personal color. Sagas of overcoming long odds, personal disabilities, perseverance, and flat out hijinks kept the audience spellbound. The evening was truly appreciated as a once in a lifetime opportunity to spend time with a great sailor, engineering genius, and a fantastic gentleman.

Sanlorenzo SL94 Let me entertain you and delight you! ¡Estoy aquí para entretener y deleitar! Text by | Texto por Bill Ando Photos by | Fotos por Sanlorenzo Yachts anlorenzo’s 94-footer takes entertaining seriously enough to move the tender and its crane to the lazzarette. As I walk down the dock to board Sanlorenzo’s SL94 yacht for the sea trial, I notice something seems to be missing. There is no clutter up on the flybridge. Normally, aboard a yacht of this size, the aft end of the flybridge is taken up by an athwartships mounted tender and the requisite crane to lift it up there. Aboard this new boat there is no clutter. I think perhaps there is no tender yet on board. Where is the crane? They couldn’t have hidden it that well. As it turns out, they did hide it though not on the flybridge. Alastair Callender, Sanlorenzo’s creative director, explained that the main reason the tender is stored down below was so that they could dedicate the flybridge area to guest socializing spaces. Yes, you can put a hot tub up there (if you want one) while

a 15-foot jet tender stores athwartships in the lazarette, moved by an overhead beam crane. That also makes it much easier to recover the tender when there is a sea running through the anchorage, which is not the time when you want 15 feet of jet tender hanging off the side of the boat and swinging around. Given the design teams familiarity with the pencil, they were able to retain the twin, port-andstarboard, transom stairways from the swim platform to the main deck, without moving the engine space or bulkhead forward. The spacious flybridge has moveable chaise lounges on the aft section with the helm, as well as a barbecue and wet bar forward under the optional hard Bimini that doubles as an electronics arch. Entry and exit for the flybridge is via a stairway from the aft main deck to port or the centerline companionway, through the raised pilothouse. Francesco Paszkowski, along with Sanlorenzo’s in-house technical department, are responsible for the design of the SL94 which made its U.S. debut at the Miami Boat Show earlier this year. They gave her rectangular port lights along the fiberglass planning hull to let daylight into the staterooms, as well as copious amounts of glass along the coach roof sides on the main deck. The side decks are wide and the bulwarks are
high enough to make one feel safe going forward, no matter the weather. The well-lit interior is beautifully thought out. Entering from the aft deck through a glass slider, there is seating on moveable furniture to the port side, and opposite is a built-in credenza that contains a pop-up flat-screen TV/entertainment system. Forward, there is sculptural grid work of burnished hide leathers, laced with stainless steel accents, supported on a freestanding stainless structure. This area separates the lounging space from the dining area forward. One can pass on either side the wall to access the dining area, which can be closed off with a doorway on either side. On the port side is a day head as well as the stairway up to the bridge in the raised pilothouse. As you walk past the dining table, that comfortably seats eight, you enter the galley and crew mess, which can be closed off from the other areas. Here, you will also find the stairway to the crew quarters below with two twin bunk cabins that sleep four, each of which has its own head and shower. Down the starboard side, you’ll find the stairway to the lower deck and the guest and owner accommodations. One touch that I found interesting was the inclusion of a Zen garden at the top of the stairs, which compliments the general décor quite well and might offer some comfort if the seas are running heavy. The VIP stateroom is forward and just abaft of that are two twin cabins, one on either side of the hallway. Full beam amid ship, the owner’s spacious stateroom features a separate water closet and shower for maximum privacy. The interior of this yacht offers a contemporary feel but it doesn’t have to be that way. As this is a semi-custom yard, if you order one they will build it to your desires in Sanlorenzo’s 538,295-square-foot Ameglia, Italy facility where they build the eight Sanlorenzo SL model line from 62 feet to 118 feet. Sanlorenzo turns out approximately 20-30 units annually from 3 different ranges of yachts, offering a flagship 46Steel, 164 foot superyacht. Standard power is a pair of 1,890-horsepower CAT C32 Acert diesel engines that push the SL94 up to 27 knots top speed and 25 knots cruising speed. However, the boat as tested has the optional pair of 2,300-horsepower MTU

Sin embargo, el barco tal como fue testeado tiene el par de motores diesel MTU 16V 2000M84 opcional de 2300 caballos de fuerza, brindando una velocidad máxima de 29 nudos y una velocidad crucero de 27 nudos. iva, iconic Ferretti Group brand, announces the birth of the new flagship of their open line, featuring racy exteriors with a strong personality: 63’ Virtus, is the largest open yacht produced by the shipyard, characterized by an unmistakable style and a distinctly Mediterranean character. Created following the lines of the Vertigo, a classical, highly successful Riva model, 63’ Virtus recaptures the strong character of the Rivale, another Riva open boat which has marked the shipyard’s history, but uses larger spaces which guarantee excellent liveability and total on-board comfort. The new model is the product of a close working relationship between Officina Italiana Design, the studio that exclusively designs all yachts in the Riva range, the AYT – Advanced Yacht Technology, the Ferretti Group’s naval research and design centre, and the team of architects and designers at Centro Stile Ferrettigroup. 63’ Virtus has been designed as a sporty yacht, created for owners wishing to experience the sea first hand. The exteriors feature spacious areas which enable owners to enjoy the yacht in the company of their guests, also thanks to two large sundecks, one at bow and one astern, under which the garage for the tender is located. iva, marca ícono del Grupo Ferretti, anuncia el nacimiento del nuevo yate insignia de su línea abierta, el cual presenta exteriores de competición con una fuerte personalidad: 63’ Virtus, es el yate abierto más grande producido por el astillero, y se caracteriza por un estilo inconfundible y un distintivo carácter mediterráneo.

ble aspect of the yacht is also extended to the helm area, where the driving seat consists of a three seater sofa, enabling owners to share the pleasure of driving the yacht with their guests. It is protected by a large windshield with a double curve which ensures comfort while cruising. The cockpit is spacious, comfortable and equipped with a fridge, sink and –upon request– a grill. In the cockpit, there are three sofas, one of which is L-shaped, located on the port hand side, one astern and a third equipped with a system which slides and enables it to move closer to the varnished teak table which has a flip up section. Moreover, the cockpit is covered with a large, electro-hydraulically operated bimini which can also be kept open whilst running. Typical of Riva, the class and attention to fine detail is evident in the cleats and in the electric winches skilfully concealed to ensure aesthetic fluidity. Painstaking attention has also been paid to creating the functional, well-designed instrument mast in line with the style of all Riva open models. The interior fittings have been studied in such a way as to attain the very best availability in terms of space and comfort, with a large salon which makes it possible to place a wooden table, able to accommodate up to six in this area, without having to reduce the size of the galley. 63’ Virtus is a yacht featuring contrasts of color and materials: the alternation between the light shades of the oak and darker ones of the leather, and between the opaque and polished lacquering create a style which gives the new model a further touch of modern style without forgetting the traditional elegance of all Riva yachts. The master cabin is located portside astern and set slightly lower than the other two, and has been enriched with a bed with a leather stitching finish. The slightly lower position of the cabin makes it possible to use all the space available. The guest cabin, also located portside midship, features bunk beds, set out in an L-shape which offers a pleasant panoramic view of the surface of the water. The master and VIP cabins, set at bow, both feature ensuite heads, whilst the day head is located opposite the guest cabin.

“Riva is an extraordinary brand, and always manages to innovate, creating unique, cuttingedge models, whilst still maintaining the charm and magic which have characterized it for over 170 years,” said Norberto Ferretti, Honorary Chairman of the Group bearing the same name. “The new 63’ Virtus, with her strong, decisive character combined with the elegance and refined features which are typical of this brand, is the perfect addition to the Riva range.” The new Riva 63’ Virtus is also at the cuttingedge for her on-board technological equipment. Featuring twin 1360mhp MAN 12V engines, the new Riva 63’ Virtus delivers an excellent performance, with a top speed of 40.5 knots and a cruise speed of 35 thanks to the tried and tested hull equipped with direct shaft line tunnel propulsion.

six boats in the Corsair line range from 22 feet to 36 feet and its smallest boat is the popular 20-foot Silver Bullet. Chris Craft held its annual press event June 12-14 at the Hyatt Regency in Sarasota, FL, to showcase every boat they currently build, and members of the press got to play with them for a day or two. The company is on schedule to build 350 boats during the 2013 model year according to Jeff Ellis, Chris Craft’s vice-president of sales. According to Julius, the dashboard is what the company keeps control of. The dealers can mess with anything except for that one area. It’s a unique look that is on every Chris-Craft boat built, the company’s trademark of sorts. “If I had my way we’d control the entire area,” says Julius. Adding that it’s not practical because he realizes that people require different electronics and each owner wants them installed in a different area. The dash plate is stylized stainless steel. The dash cover follows the curve of the higher-mounted electronically driven knot meter. On either side of the knot meter is a tachometer for each engine. Below them are oil pressure and temp gauges for each engine. Single-engine boats feature a different layout for the dash. Three new models that were made available to test during the three-day press event were the Launch 32 and the Corsair 36 and 32. The Corsair 36 can be ordered in the European version which means that there isn’t a teak covered walkway down the centerline to the aft platform. Instead, the area is filled with an athwartships bench seat across the aft end of the cockpit and the rest of the stern area is given over to a spacious sunpad. The feature of the Launch 32, as with all of the company’s launches, is the open bow. The 32, which is the largest of the series, includes a cabin for two and a head. The aft seating just forward of the sunpad gives the boat a Euro vibe. A windshield panel folds over to port, allowing easy and stand-up access to the bow area. The Corsair 36 is the flagship of the Chris-Craft fleet, although there is a 38-footer on the drawing board that they say is coming soon. The 36 includes a double stateroom to port with a forward dinette table that drops down to create a

As it was the U.S.A. edition that was at the dock, the aft seating area featured a table that rises out of the floor electronically, encouraging an alfresco dinning experience. It’s a clever use of the space. The Corsair 36 is by far the most desirous of the new vessels to join the fleet. I would opt for the U.S.A. model. I like the unfettered access to the swim platform, and the automatic table in the cockpit too. The result of his experiences and his academic training is an impressive talent when portraying the littoral culture and lifestyle. He describes himself as a beginner in the arts, dedicating himself almost only to black and white prints. His inspiration comes from oceans, nature and cultures, and he recreates his experiences through his drawings, engravings and paintings. However, his favorite means of expression is drawing, which best conveys his testimony of people and their relationship to nature. At the present time he lives in Brittany where his work is centered on creating geographical maps for Géorama, a publishing house specialized in travel books. He also collaborates with the Port-Musée Douarnenez, and with magazines such as Le ChasseMarée, Yachting Times Magazine and ArMen, for which he designed the cover.

The Galapagos Islands: A Wildlife Sanctuary

any biologists have most likely dreamt about visiting the Galapagos Islands. I was no exception. A planned diving cruise allowed me to see this naturalist’s paradise. After a short flight from Guayaquil, I set foot on Darwin: a barren volcanic island, surrounded by beautiful turquoise waters. The first dives allowed us to become familiar with local species like the playful sea lions, peaceful sea turtles seemingly flying over the reefs, “gringos”, red fish that looked like they had stayed in the sun for too long, iguanas that resembled monsters of older times, and armadas of dancing eagle rays. It was like diving into a tropical tank. As fun and amazing as it was to see the islands, I could not be completely satisfied until I saw what I came to see: whale sharks. The locals, who refer to them as Big Mama, are rather superstitious and believe that just by saying their name will make them leave their amazing waters.

“ In order to have a better chance of seeing this so called biggest fish on earth, we needed to reach the most remote islets of the Galapagos archipelago. After a night of sailing in Darwin’s past territory, not much more than a rock lost in the ocean, we encountered a pod of pilot whales. We all took that as a good sign that whale sharks may be nearby. Before entering the water for the first time, we went over the dive master’s briefing for the dive plan. As I was taking photos of tiny colorful sea slugs, I heard the dive master’s shaker rings. I turned towards him and saw a huge shadow darken the reef. It was what I came to see. Placid, the huge creature slowly swam away. I realized that my long-standing dream had come to fruition. It was a pregnant female and the first of eight whale sharks that we observed in a single dive. They gather here to feed on huge quantities of plankton, which they swallow in a matter of

seconds. Other fish, like schooling hammerheads, also congregated in the area. Literally hundreds of schooling hammerhead sharks circled us, adding more thrill to the dive. Other impressive large creatures joined this underwater festival: manta rays, silky white-tipped and black-tipped sharks also swam with us and fed my fascination. On the surface of the sea that surrounded our boat, dolphins were often seen playing nearby. Although we could hear them whilst underwater, clicking everywhere, we were not able to even catch a glimpse of one. enorme criatura se alejaba lentamente.
What is the link between Darwin and the Galápagos Islands? | 60 | www.yachtingtimesmagazine.com
Charles Darwin (1809-1882) renowned naturalist who has proposed innovative and controversial theories in the field of biology, first embarked on board the HMS Beagle from 1831 to 1836 as a geologist. The initial goal of the expedition was to map the coasts of South America. Scientists on board took advantage of the stopovers to make observations and collect samples of flora and fauna. In the GalĂĄpagos Islands, Darwin noticed that the same animals had gradually evolved to become different species on the islands where conditions, like food availability, were different. For exam-
ple, the Darwin’s finches’ beak morphology had evolved according to the kind of food available. For Darwin, two big ideas emerged from this trip that later would revolutionize the field of biology: the unity and diversity of life can be explained by evolution, and natural selection drives adaptive evolution. In 1838, he speculated that all living species evolved from one or a few common ancestors, with time, through the process of natural selection. For a long time, these ideas did not have unanimous support but nowadays they make up the foundation of biology. www.yachtingtimesmagazine.com | 61 |

When we surfaced and loaded back on the boat, everyone emerged with big smiles on their faces from the exciting dive we had just completed. The crew was always ready with warm, dry towels, hot chocolate, and cookies, which was greatly appreciated. Not only was there amazing life to see under the water, there were also fascinating birds such as frigate birds and boobies, that followed the boat behind us, as well as Galapagos penguins. My eyes were overworked while attempting to see everything, but it was impossible due to the extreme diversity of life, sites and scenes to observe. As we sailed back, a variety of landscapes from the different volcanic islands, appeared to our already amazed eyes. On land the biodiversity was astonishing. A quick visit to Santa Cruz allowed the sights of land iguanas, tortoises, and Darwin’s finches. When it was time for me to leave these amazing islands and their surrounding waters, I found myself wanting to return to discover more of the terrestrial species that Darwin first described so long ago. I would love to think that this precious wildlife sanctuary would always be protected for further generations to enjoy.

e are headed for Myanmar, formerly Burma; it’s January, the best time to travel in Southeast Asia. The Ayeyarwady (Irrawaddy) and the Mekong are full of history, and certainly two of Southeast Asia’s most venerable rivers. This year we are going to travel up the Ayerarwady River on a flat bottom barge from Mandalay to above Kyauk Myaung, a relaxed three-day trip. This is my second trip to Myanmar. I first visited the country in 2008 because I was interested in the history and archeology of the region. Theirs is an old civilization and I like the people and their Buddhist way of life. The temples and stupas (mound-like structure containing Buddhist relics) are something to behold as you come upon them in a cultivated field or along the river. Having spent a lot of time at sea in the past, a river journey became very appealing to me because there is lots of activity on the water and habitation on both banks. The Ayeyarwady begins in the Himalayas coursing through mountains where the river is joined by one of its main tributaries: the Mai Kha. Here the waters run swift and deep, surrounded by deep gorges and teak forests. After Bhamo, the river widens and slows its 1300-mile course to the Andaman Sea. Our departure point, Mandalay, is the midpoint of the Ayeyarwady and the country. The fifty-five foot barge that our guide, Ainda, arranged for our adventure is called the Taing Win, but we dubbed her the African Queen due to her well-worn nature that evoked vivid

stories. This is to be a different kind of river trip, not a cruise, rather more rustic and adventurous. The African Queen is a two level open barge; the main deck in front of the pilothouse is ample with casual lounge chairs set up for watching river traffic. The dormitory style sleeping quarters are below deck. As we leave Mandalay heading north to Kaukauna, we pass a camp of farmers who come up river every winter during the dry season to fish. They build temporary bamboo huts along the river bank, then in the wet season the fishermen leave the huts and go back down river as the waters swell, returning to their farming villages where they cultivate peanuts, corn and green crops. The river is very shallow this winter. In the summer months, the snowmelt comes out of the Himalayas often flooding the river basin. But this is the dry season and the river is lower, so low that the African Queen moves slowly, zigzagging her way to avoid treacherous sand bars and islands as the river widens. A boatman stands at the bow with a bamboo pole measuring the depth and calling out the measurement to the captain, often three to five feet deep. Most of these river towns have stupas and pagodas, all white and golden, rising high above the fringe of trees. Sprinkled throughout the area are ruins of ancient cities, monasteries, and the site of a former king’s royal headquarters. Today village gardens of corn, tomatoes and green onions are planted among the ruins. About four hours out, there is a sighting of river dolphins. We shut off the engines and float with them for a while. The Irrawaddy dolphin, cousin to the Orca whale, is blue or gray, snub nosed, and vulnerable to extinction. They travel in small pods, no larger than ten. These gentle creatures play in the water around us as we drift with the current. The dolphin sighting is unusual as the Ayerarwady River is the main artery for commerce and usually these mammals seek quieter tributaries. We pass barges full of ceramic vessels pushed by tugs towing rafts of bamboo poles over 100” long and nearly as wide, and other rafts of teak logs curing in the water as they head for market. Boats pass us with animals on board and lean-to huts for shelter from the sun, or for cooking and sleeping. And then there are the large barges hauling every kind of tractor and earth moving equipment. People live on the water for weeks at a time. We anchor for the night beside a large sand bar, in an inlet not far from tomorrow morning’s destination: the big river market at Kyauk Mayung. Tables are set up on deck for a home cooked Burmese dinner of fish and meat curries with sticky rice and noodles. We watch the sun go down over the trees as the moon

comes up on the other side of the river; a beautiful time for a swim before dinner. The African Queen arrives with many other boats from the river villages. Tuesday market at Kyauk Myaung is a lively affair. Everything is sold here from baskets to batteries; beautiful greens and exotic charbroiled fish, even live ducks and pigs. Women walk through the market carrying their goods balanced on their heads in large ceramic bowls and baskets. Our cook searches for local delicacies for today’s lunch and dinner on board. Ainda walks with us to the next village to see where the large ceramic vessels are made. These are the same vessels that we see being loaded onto barges and carried down the river. The huge ceramic containers are mainly used for food storage and are big enough for a person to hide in. The African Queen’s next stop is the Sheinmarker Tawra Monastery, which is run by Buddhist monks and serves as a school for the local children. To get to the monastery, we climb a very steep series of steps that allows us to overlook the broad sweep of the Ayerarwady with its many twists and turns. Nearby Mingun village is known for an enormous incomplete stupa, the Mingun Pahtodawgyi, which had it been completed would have been the world’s largest religious monument. Started in 1790 by King Bodawpaya, it was abandoned after his death in 1819. In 1808 the King also commissioned the world’s largest bell for the stupa. At nearly 100 tons, it is still the heaviest ringing bell in the world. After three days on the river, we leave the African Queen for Sagaing and the Tilawka Guru Monastery for our land based travel. I am impressed by how much cargo is carried on the river, especially the giant pontoons of bamboo and teak logs. There certainly isn’t much in the way of recreational sailing but we did pass one touring ship called the Mandalay. I have heard there are other cruises complete with staterooms and elegant facilities that take as long as 5 - 6 days up river but they can’t go where we went. * Irrawaddy: Recently the Myanmar government has changed the name of the river to Ayeraywady. There are currently a number of different spellings. The Irrawaddy Dolphin’s name remains the same.

fter a busy and exciting week participating in the International Rolex Cup Regatta, my husband and I decided to take a few extra days off and actually relax. We’d seen lots of photos of Frenchman’s Reef in promotional media, and viewed the resort from the sea when racing in and out of the harbor at Charlotte Amalie, but we never quite made our way down there on our previous visits to St. Thomas. It lies off the beaten path just to the southeast of Charlotte Amalie on a cliff with stunning views that look back at the harbor and capital to the northwest, the Morning Star beach to the east and across the Caribbean to St. Croix to the south. The resort derives its landmark name from the XVII century when the French Huguenots, fleeing from religious persecution, took refuge in St. Thomas and the entire southeast section of the island became known as Frenchman’s Bay Quarter. In early April, the time of our visit, the resort had just completed a major renovation so the hotel was sparkling. We arrived into a large open air lobby where we were welcomed by very friendly staff. The hotel, with just 478 rooms, was quiet and its surrounding areas had a very nice ambience. Our room was fresh and comfortable with a fantastic view of the harbor and Charlotte Amalie. For those of us that like boats, watching three cruise liners being slotted into the long wharf while having morning coffee on the balcony was a great way to start the day. Even though our interest was to just kick back and relax, activities and outings of every type abound via the concierge services, including treatments at the new spa facility, the beach and beautiful pools all overlooking the Caribbean. The resort’s capability to facilitate weddings, conferences and any other type of event in a beautiful relaxed setting make it somewhere to consider for any group .

As a young boy, Rowan fell in love with sailing boats, and promised one day to travel the world with no fear of the uncertain nor care for a normal life. Born in Exeter, England into a family of artists and engineers, the south coast of Devon fueled his desire as childhood sailing excursions built the foundations of his inspiration, the simplicity of forms and function combined. As he grew up, he found a physical way to express himself through cycle racing, a sport where determination and sacrifice were essential. He could see how aerodynamics were a vital factor, how man and machine were both streamlined to create perfect air penetration, the human body shaved, exposed and elegant, yet showing great strength. Whilst his peers were studying, he was training, racing, pushing his limits, outside in the elements.

Following his childhood dream, he studied architecture at University of Bath but found the size of the projects too impersonal; “there was not enough physical contact, too many complications and constraints. The design and artistic content were lost in physics, politics and the need to justify”. Recognizing this, he changed his tack and embarked on a degree course in Furniture Design and Craftsmanship at Buckinghamshire University College. The simple beauty of the hands-on craft carried him away to a place where he could transform his ideas into reality. “Furniture, quite literally, touches us all physically but for me it’s more than that”. Tom’s designs take us on a journey of imagination, invoking memories and passions in which one can see elements of boats, airplanes, racing cars or bicycles. Each piece has a minimalist form reflecting his taste for visual purity, toying with speed and excitement. “My furniture says that although we may be locked indoors or living with constraints, there is hope - something more - a reason to dream…. I will never settle for what is given, living just to live is not enough - dare to dream”. Through his portfolio of over 30 exclusive designs, Tom confirms that he lives for the challenge of meeting a customer’s personal needs and can design and build their furniture dreams. This passionate young designer is definitely worth following, don’t worry he promises his racing days are over!!! Please contact Tom Rowan at contact@tomrowan.fr

A través de su porfolio de más de 30 diseños exclusivos, Tom demuestra que vive para el desafío de cumplir con las necesidades personales de sus clientes, y puede diseñar y construir los muebles de sus sueños. ill the recreational boating business finally make it to prime time? Check your local listings. Michael Borrelli, President, of Metan Marine, is a reality tv junkie. For quite a while, he’s harbored a dream to make a reality show at his business. Metan Marine specializes in restoring classic powerboats like Boston Whalers and SeaCraft models, among others. He now has the opportunity to get his business on reality TV with the working title “Walk On Water” attached. About a year ago, confident that he had a good thing going, Borrelli began taping for the show. He said 10, half-hour long episodes have been filmed. ”Even if they don’t go with it we’ll sell what’s in the can, then see if they want to go into production on it.” "We have plans A, B and C." Borrelli shares. "So we'll get on TV, we just don't know how, yet. We’ve showed it to National Geographic as well as the Discovery channel. It’s in the discussion stage, but it’s been frustrating.” Borrelli admits as he learns to deal with the entertainment industry. They are working with an experienced production company, Morning Dew Pictures who according to Borrelli, have done the housewife series as well as the current CBS hit Dogs in the City. The couple is confident that the stories that come from the customers, and the interactions that go on within the shop, are interesting and exciting enough to keep a TV audience watching. It’s a family affair. Borrelli’s wife, Pamela, runs the business’s marketing and advertising. Their son, Joey, is a shop worker who will hopefully take over the business one day and their daughter Tessa, a talented singer/songwriter, wrote the Metan theme song. Pamela says their aspirations right now are to focus on continuing to grow Metan Marine internationally, and to make a show that boosts the boating industry and showcases Metan's work. She says they hope “it will match the classic car [and motorcycle] television craze...only in the boating industry.” “Walk On Water” (the title is subject to change based on the whims of the network) will give some much-needed publicity to the recreational boating market. Here’s hoping they can sell it and that it’s a hit, best of luck! Contact Metan Marine at (781) 293-2755, www.metanwalkonwater.com

“Tenemos planes A, B y C” explica Borrelli.
