LETTERS TO THE EDITOR | CARTAS AL EDITOR

Dear Editor, The Caribbean Marine Association (CMA) is planning to campaign to have the sale of TBT (Tributyltin) marine anti-foul paint banned throughout the Caribbean. The use of TBT marine anti-foul paint is currently banned in most of the world but not yet in the Caribbean. Research has proved that TBT is very harmful to the marine environment and, as an area which relies heavily on the environment for its tourism industry, the Caribbean needs to be mindful of the harm being done by the continuing sale of TBT paints to yachts and other sea going vessels. For a variety of reasons it would be difficult to get all Caribbean nations to agree to ban the sale and use of TBT based anti-foul paint. Equally, no single Caribbean island wishes to be the first to introduce a ban and put itself at a trading disadvantage with its neighbors, therefore, the CMA has decided to deal with the problem at its source the retailers. A number of retailers in the Caribbean already refuse to stock TBT paint and the CMA is hopeful of persuading those retailers who still sell TBT paint to desist from doing so. The CMA would like to enlist the help of the press by publicizing the CMA’s initiative. Yours faithfully,

John J Duffy President - Caribbean Marine Association

IN BRIEF

Sunset Harbour Yacht Club Unveils Sustainable, Eco-Friendly Practices to Protect the Environment unset Harbour Yacht Club, South Beach’s only private, fivestar yacht club, is setting an unprecedented benchmark for green, environmentally friendly marinas across the country. As a designated Clean Marina by the State of Florida, SHYC has already taken a proactive approach to environmental stewardship by complying with a set of green (a.k.a clean) policies designed to protect Florida’s waterways. These measures address critical environmental issues such as sensitive habitat, waste management, storm water control, spill prevention and emergency preparedness. Recently, SHYC has taken extraordinary and costly measures utilizing state-of-the-art technology to exceed current guidelines including: • SHYC has contracted with a private firm to install a water quality monitoring device that can track water flow, sediment build up, chemical and biological factors and alert local agencies if there is a spill (oil, etc…) of any kind. • SHYC management is pursuing wind and water generation devices that would meet the self-sustaining needs of the Marina and foster the creation of additional energy. • SHYC has switched from wood to eco-friendly, fiberglass composite pilings manufactured by Pearson Pilings which are stronger than wood, steel or concrete pilings and have a life span of 100-plus years because they do not rot or rust. In addition, these piling do not contain chemical preservatives that eventually leach into the water. • Current pressure-treated wood decking is being replaced with Marine Hybrid Deck Panels, which are 100 percent recyclable, composed of 55 percent rice hulls and 45 percent recycled plastic. • SHYC has contracted with Waste Management to provide recycling services, including two 90-gallon bins on property. • Future plans for SHYC include possibility of creating a natural reef under SHYC docks as a wave attenuation device that will benefit Biscayne Bay. “SHYC is setting a precedent in the marine industry by partnering with several organizations to implement stronger measures to protect the environment,” said Doug Mason, general manager of SHYC. “These socially responsible initiatives will not only reduce SHYC’s carbon footprint but preserve our waterways for future boating generations.” Nestled on two acres along the beautiful Biscayne Bay, just a mile and a half north of Government cut, Sunset Harbour Yacht Club features fixed, concrete docks and 125 deep-water slips with 10’ depths to accommodate 45 to 160 ft. sport cruisers, sail boats, catamarans and mega yachts up to 65’ height. ifty-six classic sailing yachts took part in a series of races and events involving boat owners, crewmembers, sailing lovers and journalists who traveled to Antigua from every corner of the world to experience the most important gathering of classic yachts in the Caribbean. The prestigious event culminated with Lone Fox being awarded with a Special Edition Panerai watch as the overall winner of the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta 2012. This year, surrounded by the beautiful scenery of English Harbour, all eyes were undoubtedly on Eilean, the Bermudian ketch created in 1936 by the Scottish Yacht Designer William Fife III. A multimedia exhibition set up inside the charming, historical Georgian shipyard Nelson’s Dockyard, presented the history of Eilean, from her inception, to her discovery in ruin five years ago by Panerai CEO Angelo Bonati, to this year’s triumphant return home to Antigua. Members of the rock band Duran Duran, who shot the video for “Rio” aboard Eilean exactly 30 years ago on these same shores, also took part in the festivities in celebration of Eilean’s return. Simon Le Bon, a passionate sailor himself, along with Nick Rhodes and Roger Taylor were thrilled to accept Panerai’s invitation to return to Antigua and sail again on Eilean. Winner of the Panerai Prize for First Overall Classic Class was Saphaedra. Winning 1st Place in the Spirit of Tradition Class A was Rebecca. The winner of Vintage Class A was Mariella, helmed by Carlo Falcone with Dennis Conner. Eilean, helmed by Andrew Cully and, for several races, Simon Le Bon, won the Woodstock Restoration Trophy in Vintage Class A for Best Restored Yacht. Dorade won First Place in Vintage Class B, and also was the Overall Winner for the Concours d’Elegance.

ailing can be therapeutic for anyone, let alone for someone who is suffering from a serious illness like cancer. A day spent in the ocean away from land and all its troubles, can help one detach from anything. That is exactly what Sailing Heals does: offer a sigh of relief even if just for a day. They match sail boat owners with patients and their caretakers, to whisk them off for a day of relaxation in the deep blue sea. This time, this wonderful organization set sail from South Florida. Founded by leading luxury Italian watch maker Officine Panerai, Sailing Heals was formed in 2011 in conjunction with the North American Circuit of the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge as a way to give back to the communities who support their annual regattas.

Trisha Boisvert was asked to become executive director of Sailing Heals in order to organize a nonprofit, that would get captains willing to take cancer patients out for a day of healing. “I jumped at the opportunity,” she said. “My mother has been battling multiple myeloma for 8 years. My father and several friends have experienced it too.” So Boisvert got to work and launched the first event in Marblehead, Massachussetts in August of 2011. Last March, during Miami Sailing Week, Sailing Heals teamed up with North Shore Medical Center in Miami and Good Samaritan Medical Center in Palm Beach, to give cancer patients a day of sailing in Biscayne Bay and the Palm Beach Intracoastal. Many members of the Coconut Grove Sailing Club in Miami donated their time and sailboats to this event. Member Becky Lyons offered her 1988 Tartan 40 Sloop for the day. A registered nurse from South Miami hospital MASC recovery room, Lyons says she’s very happy to volunteer. “I think that for a patient who’s worried about the future, sailing is a great escape to nature and a way to disengage from their problems, even if just for a while.” Lyons who has been sailing for over 30 years, mostly in Louisiana and the Mississippi Gulf coast, lost a Tartan 37 sloop during hurricane Katrina. “Sailing is very therapeutic. I look forward to more outings with Sailing Heals”. For more information, please visit www.sailingheals.org

Let’s hope that the 2012 Olympics stay quiet and the athletes are allowed to do what they do best.

The Olympic Games are a special time. At least they should be. A time to put aside all our differences and grudges, and allow our representative athletes to compete at the pinnacle of their skill. The 2012 games will be held in London, England. If you’re thinking of attending, the sailing venue is 134 miles southwest of London in the seaside town of Weymouth, from July 27 to August 12. Skipper of a 470, representing Argentina, Lucas Calabrese and his crew Juan de la Fuente, were in Palma de Mallorca when I caught up with them. Calabrese said their strategy includes a hectic schedule of four European regattas prior to the event in order to get themselves in the best shape for the Olympics. “We will be racing the Princess Sophia Trophy in Palma; Spring Cup regatta in Les Sablettes, France; World Championships in Barcelona; and Skandia Sail for Gold in Weymouth as well,” he said. “Once all those (races) are finished”, he added, “we will be living in Weymouth for 45 days before the Olympics start.” “In this class there are at least ten boats with chances of medaling,” says Calabrase. “But” he continued “ I guess the toughest would be Australia, Great Britain and France.” These are world-class sailors with nothing on their minds but taking a couple of gold medals home. During the Games you must be in possession of a mooring in London in order to be allowed onto the Thames. The 2012 Marina is offering moorings for yachts (South Dock Marina and Greenwich Yacht Club) up to 59-feet in length and motor boats (Millwall Dock) with a maximum air draft of 27 feet. If you’re taking your yacht to Weymouth you’ll likely dock in Portland (deep water slips for boats over 79feet) then take a 15-minute cab ride to the venue.

he best advice I was given when I was buying a boat was that every day when I walked down the dock and saw my boat, I should get excited. I remembered that, and when I bought a boat it was one that I loved looking at. Oh, it sailed well too. Cuyler Morris, president of Morris Yachts, and his team must have received the same advice. There isn’t a boat in their two lines (M-Series Modern Classics and Ocean Series Performance Cruisers) that I don’t like. I boarded an M-Series M36 day sailer at the Miami Shake-a-Leg docks. This Morris-built semi-custom yacht was tied between her sister ships the M29 and M42. It was an impressive lineup for these Maine-built boats. There were three of us on board: Cuyler Morris, Morris’ CEO Doug Metchick and me. We motored away from the dock into ex-

tremely light winds with gusts hitting five knots. Look out! It was getting crazy out there. We had the full main up with only the working jib barely moving. Still it was an impressive performance that the boat was moving at all. We would make two knots, on occasion. Then Cuyler made a suggestion. “Should I put up the G-zero?” That’s the North Sails designation for its light air gennaker. It made all the difference. With the larger light-air sail flying I exceeded wind speed four times. Once I was making five knots. Holy smoke. Punching the numbers into the sail area /displacement program reveals that the 36-footer has a number of 20.78 which places it just over the line in the racer category. Add, oh, let’s say, approximately 600 pounds for additional crew and a variety of boat “stuff” and it will quietly slip down into the upper (faster)range of the cruiser/racer category(19.9). That’s still a respectable place to hoist your sails from. Add its exemplary sailing performance in light air to its impeccable attention to construction details and you have a sailboat that anyone would be proud to own. The 36-footer we sailed had the standard draft of five feet three inches. Other offers are a deep draft which at six feet six inches makes going to weather easier and a shoal keel of four-and-ahalf feet draft, perfect for cruising The Bahamas. Designed by Sparkman & Stephens, Morris’ M36 is a traditional, classic styled boat intended for short or single-handed sailing. It shows a slightly curved shear line intended for day sailing, or weekending, it only has five feet of headroom and no lifelines. That’s okay, They would detract from the poetry of the look of the M-series yacht. Unless one is going offshore for an extended trip there really is no reason for them. chick y yo.

that she has long overhangs(a mark of S&S designs), which increases the waterline, and so too its speed, as it heels over to the wind. The 25-foot L.W. L. is 11 feet less than the 36-foot L.O.A. that gives up nearly 30 percent of its length to overhangs. That‘s generous. A modest, though comfortable cabin is below. It contains a vanity head, a galley with sink, 12-volt refrigerator and provision storage. The port and starboard settees are thoughtfully designed for lounging or sleeping. The forepeak space contains a v-berth. Alternatively, the area is taken up with storage. Forward of the helm are spacious port and starboard cockpit seats, over six feet in length that are suitable for seating six adults comfortably. Cockpit seat hatches on all three seats allow lazarette access. The thought that the company put into the performance is commendable. For instance the sail handling has been engineered for simplicity, reliability, and ease of use. All control lines, sheets and halyards are led below the deck to control/winch pods located aft in the cockpit. Self-tailing primary winches are standard. The starboard winch is electric, which makes raising the mainsail from the cockpit easy. The only sheets running above deck are for the optional cruising gennaker. These are led aft to a location nearby the helmsman and are controlled by self-tailing manual winches. All of these features allow the helms-person to comfortably single-hand the boat whenever that becomes necessary. Cuyler said, “All of the boats are rigged the same.” That way, if you get aboard another Morris Yacht there is only a minimal learning curve to deal with. It’s apparent that Morris loves their boats, even while they are building them. It shows in the teak decks and the joiner work. Being a semicustom boat, it will build the interior anyway an owner wants it. Like the late founder Tom Morris said “It’s all about sailing.” A telling quote, that is now emblazoned on the cover of the company’s sales brochure.

It’s apparent that Morris loves their boats, even while they are building them. It shows in the teak decks and the joiner work. Being a semi-custom boat it will build the interior anyway an owner wants it.

ob Johnstone knows how to keep peace at home—name every boat he builds after his wife. Mary Johnstone’s Motorboat, that’s what the MJM stands for. At first glance it’s rather cryptic. Once you know what it means all of the mystery disappears—but the magic remains: a yacht of uncompromised quality. Bob Johnstone explained, “We were getting older and realized that our boating was going to be in power boats.” Looking for a powerboat that handled the way he and Mary wanted, proved fruitless. Johnstone along with his brother Rod, are the “J” in J boats, the most successful production performance sailboat line in history. So you can imagine that his bar is set mighty high. Being familiar with boat construction, he knew what he wanted and how to get it. He turned to Doug Zurn for the design and naval architecture. The Z in the boats’ designation stands for Zurn. It was Zurn who drew all of the hulls from the 29-foot day boat through the 34z, the 36z and

A primera vista suena bastante enigmático.

the 40z. For the construction, Johnstone enlisted Boston Boat Works, a company that has been building high-tech composite boats since 1996. Let’s not forget the romantic notion, every boat that Bob Johnstone builds is named after his wife. Zurn drew them all with a modified deep-V, offshore hull design with sharp entry and moderate beam having dual lifting strakes, chine flats, 19-degree transom deadrise carried forward 13 feet, that provide stability at rest, a dry ride and level acceleration. The details of the rest of the boats’ lines combined with the execution of the build using Kevlar and epoxy, result in the boat being a point of deserved pride for Johnstone. “We are one of a few vessels of this size certified and built to ISO CE Mark Class A Ocean structural standards,” Johnstone said. Which means engineered to meet ISO structural standards for a vessel capable of 45 knots in 21 ft. seas. That’s a beating. Since all systems and finishes are “builder installed” nothing is left to chance. Every MJM yacht is launched in Boston Harbor and undergoes sea trials before delivery. Tests of systems and calibration of instruments are conducted to insure zero defects. That way when an owner takes delivery, the only surprises are good ones. Here is how they get it that way: exceptionally

strong & light composite construction results from the use of pre-impregnated stitched biaxial E-glass/Kevlar material under great pressure with Gougeon slow-set epoxy, with a glass to epoxy ratio of 60:40. I was aboard a 40z, Downeast edition, on the Intracoastal Waterway in Palm Beach with Bob Johnstone and Scott Smith, co-owner of Boston Boat Works. Also on board was a couple who were considering buying an MJM boat. Conditions were light and the seas were flat. The perfect day for a boat ride. We were heading north from the boat show, sailing in a no-wake zone for a few miles. So, we were forced to keep the speed down to a crawl. Once we got out of the no-wake area and were able to open it up, I got out my critic’s pen. It didn’t write a thing, the boat performed impeccably. Johnstone adjusted the trim tabs, then gave it full throttle. There was no appreciable bow rise, preventing forward vision. We easily reached its top speed of 39 knots (45 mph). The boat turned at speed nicely, crossing a few wakes the MJM 40z exhibited no yaw or rolling at all. Impressive to me, and the potential customers, but to Johnstone and Smith, it was just another day on the water with the boat they built. No surprises. “Twice the fun half the fuel,” has long been MJM’s mantra. The boats use half the fuel of

their counterparts at 25 knots and faster. Even talking was a snap. No matter what speed we were doing or where we stood in the boat, conversation was never a problem. Something that impressed me was the items that were standard: The dinette converts to a Pullman style double berth with privacy curtain and the pilothouse becomes a twin sleeping cabin when surrounded by privacy curtains. Johnstone said, “Most of the time you’ll go there will be just two people. Occasionally friends or family will be along for an overnight. So they can be accommodated.” They’ve also included a separate shower on the starboard side of the forward cabin. Side-opening doors, port and starboard, abaft the rear-facing settees, overcome a common problem— boarding or disembarking when handling dock lines. There is also a door in the starboard transom that can be utilized for boarding from the swim platform by raising the settee and removing the cushion. Roll-up side and aft curtains and three fully-opening windshield panels regulate airflow in the pilothouse. The combination of the maneuverability of Volvo’s IPS drive and the fact that the MJM 40z lived up to its reputation impressed the couple; 2 days later they purchased a new 40z with the same hull color as the one we were on, majestic blue.

yeron. No había sorpresas.

The new Pershing 92’, pencilled by designer Fulvio De Simoni with the fundamental support of the technical staff of Pershing and the close collaboration with Norberto Ferretti, the AYT (Advanced Yacht Technology) and the Centro Stile of the Ferretti Group, is characterized by its slim and aggressive external profile, with tight lines that permit the enlargement of the internal volume, creating more room especially in the hall and the stern cockpit on the main deck. Pershing 92’ develops all the stylistic elements that distinguish the models of its fleet: the windows of the superstructure, the wide glass walls, the big foldaway door which divides the cockpit from the hall, as well as the inimitable performance of each Pershing yacht. An absolute novelty lies in the choice of color for the hull: white pearl, a distinctive note of the new Pershing model, which has always anticipated design standards and established the trends of international sailing. Apart from size, the accessibility to the sun deck has been improved, thanks to a wide staircase that facilitates access to the bridge. This does not modify the racy and slim profile of the hull thanks to a careful study of space that makes the sun deck almost invisible. On the bow sun deck, there is a big seat with an adjustable coffee table, in front of another big permanent sun deck. The wide cockpit, furnished with two sofas facing one another, a big table and a mobile bar, is striking because of its airy spaces, and it is one of the most comfortable areas on the boat. In line with the continuous evolution of the Pershing fleet, this area seems to extend into the big upper hall where life on board is fully expressed and where natural light flows in generously through the apertures of the big lateral windows. And that is not all: as it was on its predecessors, from the bow, one can access the hall through a foldaway glass door, designed in collaboration with Besenzoni, made up of two independent sections equipped with electro-hydraulic handling, which slide downwards until they vanish. The elegance of the furnishings is the result of the collaborative teamwork of two historic Made in Italy labels: Poltrona Frau, which has designed the pilot house, all the seating and all the details of the internal furnishing, and

The area below deck, which can be accessed through a comfortable staircase behind the pilot’s seat, consists of 4 cabins: a full-beam ship owner suite, situated in the middle of the boat enhanced by suggestive natural lighting, the VIP Pershing cabin at the bow with furnishings and spaces that have been studied up to the finest detail and two guest cabins with two side by side beds and an en-suite bathroom. The use of Poltrona Frau leather enriches all the seats and beds, contributing to a welcoming and sophisticated atmosphere. Accessible from inside and outside, there is an area at the stern that has been equipped as crew lodging. It is made up of two cabins with bathrooms that are linked to the kitchen. Finally, at the stern, above the engine room, where two MTU motors are situated, there is a spacious hangar with a folding swimming platform that allows for storage of a tender and a water motor. In the standard version, Pershing 92 is motorized by 2 MTU diesel of 16 V with 2638 horse power with surface propellers and ARNESON transmission, and reaches the maximum velocity of 42 knots and 38 knots at cruising speed. Its slimmer profile, larger volume and the study of space confirm the great care given to the project making Pershing 92’ a new point of reference that can revolutionize the concept of on board living. “Always faithful to the philosophy of the brand, the Pershing 92’ has once again shown the perfect mix of technical innovation and avant-garde design, an indissoluble binominal that makes Pershing one of the most representative Italian nautical brands worldwide, contributing to the prestige of the Ferretti Group at an international level” – declares Norberto Ferretti, President and Founder of the Ferretti Group, who follows the new products of the Pershing brand and all the Ferretti Group brands personally. | 40 | www.yachtingtimesmagazine.com

piece of history is getting a $175,000 face-lift. The 87-year-old wooden schooner “Hindu” is more than a showpiece, it’s a sweet ride. This May, everyone is invited to hop aboard. First stop: Key West, FL. “‘Hindu is a dream come true,” new owner William L. Rowan, 67, of Key West said on a Sunday in February. Setting down his woodworking tools and wiping the sweat from his brow he states, “I’m happy I could save this historic boat before it rotted away.” Rowan, a historical architect, has been working with a team that has replaced hull planking, cotton caulking, keel bolts, and innumerable other parts on Hindu over the past seven months.

A History of Service At Sea The story behind this sleek, 79-foot schooner rivals the tall tales of any salty dog.

Canada at the turn of the 20th century. The soldiers, in turn, honored her in a song. Like her namesake, the schooner proved to be beautiful and capable. In 1938 William A. Parker bought the schooner and sailed her to India to retrieve spices for trade in the U.S. The schooner’s name had changed twice by the time Parker bought the boat going from Princess Pat to Saispas (French for “do not know”), to Anna Lee Ames. Parker changed the boat’s name for the last time following his journey to India, christening her Hindu. Two years later during World War II, the U.S. Navy commissioned the schooner, painted her gray and mounted a machine gun on her foredeck. According to log books, she patrolled the coast searching for German U-boats engaging them on more than one occasion. Following the war, Hindu settled in Provincetown, MA in 1946 and remained there for decades serving as a charter vessel that helped former owner Albert “Al” Avellar, Jr. pioneer the whalewatching industry on the east coast. Despite the boat’s popularity in Provincetown, Hindu ultimately fell into disrepair in the early 2000’s. She was facing demolition in a Massachusetts boatyard when Kevin “Foggy” Foley, 65, of Key West, FL rallied enough support to fully rebuild her in 2006. Foley grew up in Massachusetts and developed a strong connection with Hindu having crewed on her as a 12year-old boy. He went on to charter the Hindu in Provincetown for the summer seasons and Key West during the winter until a series of unfortunate events resulted in a bank ownership in 2009. The boat deteriorated once again as it sat unused for nearly two years in a Key West boatyard. Last August William Rowan bought “Hindu” from the bank and began restoration work with the help of friends and family. “My dad doesn’t just own a boat,” Joshua Rowan said. “He’s a caretaker of an important part of our history.” A new branch on “Hindu” family tree “It’s been a long road and my family has sacrificed a lot of time and money, but I think it’s paid off,” Rowan said, looking up from his box of electrical wiring equipment. “We’ve been very lucky that so many people have helped us along the way. By the time we’re done, I think the boat will be in the best shape of its life.” One person in particular donated thousands of dollars in labor and expenses: Chuck Hurley, a long-time friend of former owner Captain Foley who has replaced the boat’s electrical wiring twice. In addition to Hurley, nearly a dozen people from around the world | 44 | www.yachtingtimesmagazine.com

sponsored the replacement of hull planks, donating $350 each. Currently, Hindu’s all-female crew is raising money to complete the schooner’s restoration by selling “topless” calendars. The calendars feature professionally shot black-and-white photographs of the women at work, not wearing shirts, but obscured by marine equipment. Beginning in May, Rowan and his crew will sail north from Key West, FL to Provincetown, MA stopping along the way to join other tall ships in public events organized by the military, Operation Sail, Inc. (OpSail) and Tall Ships America (ASTA). The Rowans are accepting applications for one or two paying guests who would like to crew on some or the entire journey north. Dockside tours during events are free and open to the public. “My parents always instilled an appreciation of history, especially of the tall ships, when we were growing up,” Bonnie Rowan said. “It makes me happy to think they are now a part of that history.”

MIKE HORN AND THE PANGAEA EXPEDITION MIKE HORN Y LA EXPEDICIÓN PANGAEA Photos by | Fotos por Chase Jarvis/Panerai

his summer, this celebrated South African explorer is culminating the final leg of a four-year expedition which was launched in October 2008 from the southernmost city in the world: Ushuaia, capital of Argentina’s Tierra del Fuego. This journey, which was done in several stages, took him to every single continent, including Antarctica, to raise awareness of the current state of our planet. The name of the expedition is ‘Pangaea’ and – in accordance with the motto of the expedition ‘explore, learn, act’ – Mike Horn did not restrict himself to observing, but was actively involved in trying to make our planet a better place. Learn more about the project in www.mikehorn.com. The headquarters of Pangaea, for the four years of the expedition, was an aluminum ship built in Brazil. At 35 meters in length, the 30-berth vessel combines comfort and safety with rugged versatility and premium innovation. During the expedition Mike Horn worked together with various educational institutes and local experts in each region. These young adults, whilst supported by environmental specialists, engaged in clean-up projects and other tasks that could benefit the inhabitants, the environment, and most importantly, the future of our planet. This new challenge of the explorer who became famous for reaching the North Pole on foot has been supported by Officine Panerai. The Florentine company, which has become renowned throughout the world for its highly technological, innovative sports watches asked Mike Horn to wear a specially designed model, thus putting it to the test. Respecting Panerai’s tradition, it was a laboratory watch on which studies measuring its resistance and functionality, under extreme conditions, were carried out.

PANERAI LUMINOR 1950 SUBMERSIBLE DEPTH GAUGE FOR THE PANGAEA EXPEDITION With the Luminor 1950 Submersible Depth Gauge Officine model, Panerai marks its historic continuity and reaffirms its great traditions in the field of professional precision measuring instruments. The first professional divers’ watches in history were created by Panerai and supplied to the commandos of the Italian Navy in the first half of the 20th century. Panerai also made the depth gauges which these pioneers wore on their wrists. Today these two indispensable measuring devices have been combined in a single instrument: the Luminor 1950 Submersible Depth Gauge. This new model from the Officine

Panerai Manufacture is an underwater watch with automatic winding and a chronometer certificate (C.O.S.C.) It is fitted with a depth gauge, the measurement accuracy of which has been individually tested and certified by the officially qualified body METAS (the Federal Office of Metrology based in Berne, Switzerland). Officine Panerai was keen for this watch to have this certification, being well aware of the fact that malfunctioning of the depth gauge or the display of inaccurate measurements, could result in dangerous situations for the divers. The Luminor 1950 Submersible Depth Gauge is officially recognized as a professional instrument. 47 mm in diameter like the historic models and is executed in titanium, a hypo-allergenic metal that is extremely resistant and at the same time very light; in contrast, the depth gauge push-piece and the bridge protecting the winding crown are in brushed steel. Unlike the historic wrist depth gauges used by the Italian Navy, which were usable to a depth of 30 metres, the innovative Luminor 1950 Submersible Depth Gauge measures depths of 120 metres, and it also memorizes the greatest depth encountered in the course of the dive. This is achieved by a sophisticated electronic device, an independent instrument fitted inside the case of the watch. A wholly mechanical depth gauge was not selected since the technology available would not have satisfied the standards of safety and accuracy required by Panerai.

South Pacific Rallies & Rendezvous Rallies y Reuniones en el Pacífico Sur Text & Photos by | Texto y Fotos por Diane Selkirk

n case you haven’t heard, the South Pacific, which has long been known for its isolated anchorages and miles of solitary sailing, has gotten a bit racy. Between the initial migration of the Pacific Puddle Jumpers in March and April, to the Port2Port rally from Vanuatu to Bundaberg, Australia in October and November, or the All Points Rally to Opua, New Zealand in November, there are more than a few opportunities to get your race on. he town of Douarnenez, located on the coast of the Brittany region of France, is a bustling fishing town with a very strong bond to the sea. In the early 1900’s, around 850 ships supplied the 30 canning factories in the town with sardines and mackerel. However, over-fishing in the last 30 years has caused a decline in the fishing industry, and Douarnenez has become more of a tourist destination. The city, quite different from the commercial port it used to be, still maintains the maritime influence since the town has turned its port into a unique museum: The Port-Musée (Port-Museum), inaugurated in the 1993. The Oseberg Ship A Viking Treasure El Oseberg Un tesoro vikingo Text & Photos by | Texto y Fotos por Laurence Tunbridge

here’s no question that the Viking period of 800 A.D. to 1030 A.D. is synonymous with navigation and shipbuilding. It is well known that Viking ships were strong enough to cross the North Sea even in a storm, but light enough to haul across long distances of land when necessary. Although there are sagas with full accounts of sea voyages, information about the construction and appearance of their ships has not been well documented. Tombstones in Gotland, Sweden, have engravings showing Viking ships under sail. In Denmark, Viking ships were found at the bottom of the Roskilde fjord, but these ships, which are now partly restored and shown in the local museum, were used mainly to prevent enemies from entering Denmark and offered little in the way of interesting artifacts. Other well-known excavations such as the Tune ship in 1867 in Norway, gave us a glimpse of ship building techniques, but the Gogstad ship discovered in 1880 and the Oseberg ship discovered in 1904, give us a more in depth view into the ship building and culture of the Vikings. The Oseberg ship was discovered in 1903 at a farm named Lillie Oseberg in Slagendalen, a small town near Toensberg in southeastern Norway. Oskar Rom, a farmer, had become obsessed with a mound on one of his fields. It was rumoured that the mound was haunted, with some locals believing that victims of the plague known as the “Black Death” were buried there. Others whispered about hidden treasures. Rom finally decided to investigate what lie beneath the mound. It did not take him long to

find a piece of wood elaborately decorated with complex carvings. He took the piece to Professor Gabriel Gustafson, an archeologist at the University of Oslo, who determined that the carvings were part of an ancient wooden ship. Excavations began on June 13, 1904. The oak carvings and many other objects were as fresh as the day the mound enclosed them in spite of the ship having been crushed by the weight of tons of clay and stone. Although the local soil was clay, the mound itself was built of an enormous number of turf sods, packed tightly together with grass sides up. This, together with the blue clay of the subsoil, resulted in the remarkable preservation of the wooden objects and clothing for more than a thousand years. Analysis of timbers in the grave chamber dates the burial to the autumn of 834. According to legend, strange events occured in the valley of Slagendalen. A magnificently decorated ship was pulled up the little river on round logs to its final destination on a flat area.

The corpses of two women were carried on board and placed in beds inside a new built tomb at midship along with household articles. Some time during that summer, the aft part of the ship was covered by a semi-circular mound, the forward part stayed uncovered. Ceremonies were held around the ship and animals were sacrified and buried in the grave with the two women. When the ship was uncovered in 1904, two female skeletons were found. Research revealed that one of the women was between 25-30 years old when she died, and the other approximately 60-70 years old. Who were these women who were given such an extravagant funeral? That remains unknown. However, it was rumoured that the body of the older woman was that of Queen Asa of Agder, the grandmother of Harald Fairhair, the first king of Norway. The household articles consisted of a richly decorated cart, three beautifully carved sleighs, a working sled, three beds, textile ornaments, two tents and a complete kitchen with pots and pans, spoons, knives, plates and cups. In addition, there were skeletons of at least 10 horses and farmers tools like plows and harnesses for horses. Personal belongings like combs, clothing made of linen, silk and wool held together by pins and buttons, and shoes made from leather were found. Keys found on the women in the grave tell us they held a strong position in the household. There is reason to believe that these women were important or were royalty, since only this group, in Norse culture, would be buried with their belongings to accompany them upon entering Valhalla in the afterlife. arcilloso, el montículo estaba hecho de una enorme cantidad de paneles de césped agrupados de manera apretada, con el césped que crecía hacia arriba.

Oseberg Viking Ship Foundation is a project sponsored by a non profit organization. Its mission is to build an exact replica of the ship using ancient techniques and tools in the Norwegian town of Toensberg. The project team has made use of laser and computer scanning devices of the original ship along with visual examinations to produce new drawings. A model was built and tested in a ship model tank at Marintek Trondheim. The Oseberg ship is thought to have been used only for coastal voyages but may be more seaworthy than anticipated. The ship is scheduled to be launched June 20, 2012. The entire project is being filmed by the National Geographic Channel and will be broadcasted sometime later in 2012. If you find yourself visiting Norway this year, the project is under way at Toensberg’s busy waterfront. Volunteers are welcome to join boatbuilders, woodcarvers, blacksmiths, carpenters, weavers, textile workers and history intermediaries.
