FROM THE EDITOR I would like to express my deepest condolences to those affected by the catastrophic damage that hurricane Dorian has wreaked mainly over the Bahamas, and also over parts of Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas. Please find out in your community about ways to assist the storm-ravaged Bahamas, like donating food, clothes or supplies. We could also take this time to learn about the effect that climate change has over hurricanes. Just recently, I read an article about how global warming has increased water temperatures, creating a higher potential for tropical cyclones to develop. Slowmoving storms like Florence, Harvey and Dorian are becoming more common as the earth gets hotter. Hurricanes now tend to move more slowly over both land and water, which is awful news for any community in their path. There are many ways you can personally help in the fight against global warming. Calling your Senators and Representative is the first step in building a relationship with your congressional offices and creating the political will needed to solve this environmental disaster. week-long regatta was recently held at Harbor Court, Newport, RI to celebrate the 175th Anniversary of the New York Yacht Club. The event, first run in 1844, took place on Narragansett Bay and Rhode Island Sound. Members of the New York Yacht Club along with four invited yacht clubs - Royal Thames Yacht Club, Royal Yacht Squadron, St. Francis Yacht Club and Yacht Club Costa Smeralda- and U.S. service academies entering yachts with an LOA of 30 feet or more, participated in this grand event.

The Largest Fleet Ever of 12 Metres Gather in North America

wenty-one historic 12 Metres from six countries gathered in Newport, Rhode Island for the 12 Metre World Championship. Many of the 12 Metres racing once sailed in America’s Cup competitions here in Newport from 1958-1983 (Modern and Traditional Divisions); some having been built with winged keels specifically for the 1987 Cup (Grand Prix Division); and some dating as far back as the 1920s (Vintage Division). A 12 Metre Spirit Division also sailed. Columbia (US-16), chartered by Anthony Chiurco of Princeton, N.J., and helmed by owner Kevin Hegarty of Newport took the World title in the Traditional Division. Italian Patrizio Bertelli’s Vintage Division entrant Nyala placed first in her division. In the 12 Metre Spirit Division America II (US-42), skippered by Michael Fortenbaugh of Jersey City, N.J. won by one point over America II (US-46), its stable mate from the New York Harbor Sailing Foundation, skippered by Scott Curtis of New York, NY. Challenge XII (KA-10), owned and skippered by Jack LeFort of Jamestown, R.I. won the Modern Division. welve of the world’s most beautiful yachts measuring 20 to 56 metres competed in the 2019 Candy Store Cup Superyacht Regatta held in Newport, Rhode Island. With light breezes during the two-day regatta, the yachts sailed the 15NM course finishing off of the Castle Hill lighthouse. David Ray, owner of Bannister’s Wharf and the Clarke Cooke House, said “The original Candy Store Cup started in 1977 and was always held on the first lay day of the America’s Cup in IOR boats. The course went three times around the harbor with spinnakers and it was a terrific tradition for many years. Our superyacht edition of the Candy Store Cup is the only event in the US that brings yachts of this size together to race which makes it very special and fun for all of us involved.” Geoff Pierini, owner of Sirona (19.9m Martin Marine-built Sloop) was the overall winner of the 2019 Candy Store Cup on a tie-breaker; he also won the overall series for Class A, Nakupenda, (33.3m Danish Yachts-Built Sloop) captained by Clive Youlten won Class B and Delta House (29.9m Hodgdon Yachts-Built Sloop) won Class C. Newport Shipyard, a superyacht marina and working shipyard on Newport’s waterfront, and Bannister’s Wharf hosted this year’s Candy Store Cup.

When moving here a year ago from Atlanta, I underestimated the advantages of owning a boat to truly appreciate living in a paradise location such as South Florida. Experiencing the area from inland and the beaches left a lack of satisfaction that could only be obtained by exploring the bay and ocean by boat. When I was a child, my uncle owned a 1976 Invader Intruder with a 1976 Evinrude 115hp that we would take into Galveston Bay, Texas to fish for Redfish and Flounder. My uncle has since fell ill and cannot use the boat, therefore I shipped it from Houston to Miami for the memories and sentimental value. After restoring the interior, rewiring the electrical, and tuning up the Evinrude’s powerhead and lower-unit, my girlfriend and I are now out in the bay every weekend. Our favorite destinations are Elliot Key and Boca Chita Key at Biscayne National Park. Someday we’ll trade up to a yacht, but I’ve heard life is about baby-steps... Oceanmax Collaborates with Marine Biologists to Develop Shark and Manta Ray Satellite Tag Innovation

arine coatings export company Oceanmax, the maker of industry-leading foul-release products Propspeed and Lightspeed, announced their great white shark and manta ray marine tagging collaborations with Conservation International’s Asia-Pacific Marine Program, the New Zealand Department of Conservation, the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, and Auckland’s Tindale Marine Research Charitable Trust. “Lightspeed was essential to eliminating marine growth on the tag’s surface because biofouling can prevent tag sensors from functioning properly,” said Monterey Bay Aquarium researcher Chuck Winkler. “One type of tag sensor measures light; obviously, marine growth will interfere with its measurements.” To facilitate retrieval, Chuck is always aiming “to improve the markings that we put on our tags,” which typically include returnto-sender-type info. “Besides being nontoxic, Lightspeed is clear, which allows our labels to show through.” | 28 | www.yachtingtimesmagazine.com

he design and engineering of this one-off fast cruiser, powered by a pair of 2600 hp MTU engines and Arneson transmission that can reach and exceed 45-knot maximum speed and 35-knot cruising speed, is the result of the collaborative efforts of CEO Gianfranco Zanoni, who is also Production director and tester (as an OTAM mechanical engineer), and Umberto Tagliavini, from Marine Design & Services. The Paris-based “JDA” Joseph Dirand Architecture firm, represented by Maxime Foster, dealt with all the details of the interior layout and design, according to the wishes of the Client. The external layout offers huge convivial and relaxation areas, translating the needs and requests of the client who wanted to customise and build this unit as an Open Day Boat for his summer property.

The shape of the semi-open hard top is made with advanced composite materials that have been specifically modelled according to the Customer’s specific style. It integrates the engines’ air inlets, protects the areas served by grills for outdoor lunches and dinners and perfectly conceals the mechanism for opening the top, which is also fully customised. “We wanted to emphasize the sleek character of the boat”, explains Dirand, “by stretching the lines of the superstructure as much as possible. Covering the entire deck floor with teak helps us also to bring out this character. All the elements that interfered with this sleek quality were eliminated. We worked on the flexibility of the open/closed duality. The challenge was to offer protected spaces that are airy and bright. Thus, the sunroof, which we wanted to have the widest possible opening, allows to bring more light in while being protected from the wind”. OTAM - www.otam.it

Or as the people at Hacker-Craft suggest… tenders are “the luxury that starts long before you reach the yacht.” Hacker-Craft has been building tenders since the early part of the last century. In fact, The Hacker Boat Company is the oldest constructor of wooden motor boats in the world. Its founder’s major design and engineering accomplishments include the invention of the “V”hull design and the floating biplane for the Wright brothers. The company was known for its superb runabouts, utilities, commuters, and tenders. And it still is. Two grace the Christina O, the former Aristotle Onassis yacht. “Hacker” tenders have and do serve on other well-known yachts: Talitha G (owned by John Paul Getty, Jr, and named after his wife), Bread, Odessa II, and more.

While Hacker-Craft continues to build Runabout and Sport model tenders, the company is now building more custom projects such as limousines and a new commuter model, which sell for around $1 million. They also build their Open Sport model, which is a hybrid of their Sport model and is available in 28’, 30’ and 33’LOA. “The new 35’ commuter design is intended to offer the feel of a Venetian style water limousine, but more luxurious, with an air conditioned cabin, plush upholstery and running water, and with improved seakeeping characteristics and as much open outdoor space as enclosed space for passengers”, says Jeff Brown, the company’s naval architect, who trained at the Southampton Solent University in England for yacht and powerboat design, and is an associate member of the Royal Institute of Naval Architects. He adds, “this is a welcomed design option to the currently popular fully enclosed limousine type tender.” The Commuter can accommodate up to 12

passengers in air-conditioned comfort. Unlike builders of fiberglass tenders or RIBS, Hacker-Craft tenders are built of mahogany, by hand, using traditional methods, but with newest technology. The hulls and sides are constructed using the W.E.S.T. System (Wood Epoxy Saturation Technique) which offers unparalleled strength, resistance and impermeability for the wood. The mahogany is further protected with an ‘Enhanced Protective Pre-treatment’ (EPP) process, a multi-stage procedure which ensures that adverse effects on the boat are minimized. Jeff Brown says, “we design and build our tenders to be resilient, maneuverable and safe in the most challenging conditions. nce a small fishing village on southwestern France’s Basque coast, Biarritz was made fashionable after 1854 by the summer stays of Napoleon III and his Spanish-born empress, Eugénie. Also visited by European royalty like Queen Victoria, Edward VII of Great Britain, and Alfonso XIII of Spain, Biarritz began to call itself “the queen of resorts and the resort of kings.” Beautiful Biarritz has lost none of its charm over the years, and still remains a prestigious and chic seaside resort. Elegant villas and heritage-listed residences, which glitter with belle époque and art deco details, have retained their glamour. I spent a delightful week this summer here, lodged just one block away from pretty Grande Plage. My apartment overlooked the Biarritz Casino, an elegant and imposing art deco building that has been the center of the town’s social life since it opened in 1901. The other gorgeous building on the beach is Hôtel du Palais, the attractive palace built for Empress Eugénie around 1855 as a

summer villa. In 1880, the villa was sold and converted into a splendid hotel that attracted the international elite, including members of the European royalty. Eventually, the property fell into disrepair and closed for a period of time in the 1950s, but it has since been refurbished and is again a luxury hotel. The region’s mild climate, the variety of beaches and scenery, and the town’s luxurious tourist accommodations continue to draw an international clientele, but the exclusive image of Biarritz has changed. Tourism is now more diversified, and surf has played a part in this. In the 1950s, California surf culture was introduced to Europe on its sandy beaches, and since then Biarritz has always been a major surfing destination. The old town is lovingly restored and it’s a pleasure to stroll around while window shopping. Stylish clothing and home décor boutiques stocked with local brands abound, and there’s a nice ambiance in all cafés and restaurants. One delight of this town is the number of small, independent shops. There are specialist cheese shops, as well as chocolate, confectionery and cake shops. Bonbon-making is a tradition and I can personally vouch that they’re absolutely delicious! Biarritz looks beautiful from all angles. A wild coastline, dotted with rocks and cliffs shaped by the force of the

waves, border long, sandy beaches. Seaside promenades along the coastal paths overlooking the ocean offer amazing views and allowed me to savor the charm of this pristine town. Biarritz offers one of the most attractive seaside strolls in France, on a route lined with tamarisks and hydrangeas. It starts at the lighthouse, built in 1834. I climbed its 258 twisting steps inside the 73m-high Phare de Biarritz, and was rewarded with sweeping views of the Basque coast. The promenade then passes the Grande Plage and the Casino Barrière, the peaceful old square Place Sainte Eugénie and the Museum of the Sea. On to Fishermen’s Port, built by Emperor Napoleon, and the Rock of the Virgin Mary. The statue of the Madonna, set up to keep

local fishermen safe, is across a bridge designed by famous engineer Gustave Eiffel. I walked till I reached the magnificent beach La Côte des Basques, where I saw several surfers. Along the road, I saw some signs with images of people surfing that dated back to the 50’s and 60’s. They included detailed information about the origin of this sport in the region. I didn’t want to leave town without enjoying the feeling of being in the sea with a surfboard. So, on my last day here, I rented a board and a light wetsuit and spent a couple of hours in the water with Grande Plage in the background. Both the feeling and the view were superb, and certainly added a magical dimension to this special week. I hope to return to Biarritz very soon.

Crewed Luxury Charter Crewed charters provide a staff to help you enjoy your vacation. Smaller boats (say under 60 feet) will usually have at least a captain and sometimes a chef. Larger vessels (60-200+ feet) will have a captain, mate or deck hand, chef and a steward. Missy Johnston, owner of Northrop-Johnson Yacht Charters in Rhode Island is a certified charter broker who works with yachts 50200 feet. She says these yachts usually carry 1-12 passengers and are part of a database called YACHTFOLIO, which specialized brokers access to find vessels offering charter in different parts of the world. Brokers working with luxury crewed charters typically belong to one or many professional associations including AYCA (American Yacht Charter Association), CYBA (Caribbean Yacht Brokers Association), or IYBA (International Yacht Brokers Association). If you want to charter a large yacht, start by finding a broker via one of these organizations.

There are luxury crewed charters usually on large motoryachts with a captain, chef and crew, and bareboat charters in which you’re the captain who makes all the decisions and manages the rented vessel on your own.

To experience a high-end charter, you first need to decide where you want to go. Most of these yachts run a circuit. For example, yachts work the Caribbean in the winter and then head up to New England or to the Mediterranean in the summer. The Med also splits into the western side (Spain, France and Italy) and the eastern side (Croatia, Turkey and Greece). Some yachts stay in the Pacific working French Polynesia, Fiji or East Asia, while others wander up to Mexico and Alaska. Not all yachts are flagged to legally work in all places so you need to decide what you want to see. Bareboat Charter When you charter a vessel that you will command without professional crew or a chef, it’s called bareboat chartering. Most bareboat chartering is done on monohull or catamaran sailboats but there are organizations (The Moorings, MarineMax Vacations) that charter powercats. Dedicated charter companies have bases around the world and

Charter Know How Los ABCs del alquiler de embarcaciones In our charter issues, we’ll focus on aspects of chartering (crewed or bareboat) that will help make you a pro in no time. Let’s start with seven tips on how to make bareboating easier. Start small. Unless you have handled a 50-footer before, charter vessels that are easier to sail, reef and dock. Consider a catamaran if you need the extra room. Cats are easier to dock due to their twin engines, easier on people who suffer from seasickness and they provide more space so everyone’s comfortable. Do not miss the chart briefing. There’s no substitute for local knowledge whether it’s about tourist highlights, shoal areas, weather or even how to pick up a mooring. Ask about good restaurants, anchorages and secret snorkeling spots. Don’t skip the technical checkout where you’ll learn about your boat and all its systems. Make sure you know how to run the genset, monitor the batteries, change water tank manifolds and read the electronics. Use your phone to record the information or bring a friend for a second set of ears. Most companies now give you a dedicated cell phone on which to call the base and some provide WiFi and/or other assistance. Choose only partial provisioning and then supplement with food and beverages from local markets. However much you think you need, cut it by a third because there are many temptations to eat and drink on shore. Don’t over plan your itinerary. Plan to be flexible. Consider shoulder seasons for savings. For example, May and June are good times in the Caribbean when charter rates are lower and the crowds are smaller. Not only are shoulder season prices considerably lower than the peak dates (as little as half), but there are often additional incentives such as extra days allowing you to sail longer for the same price. If you do charter during hurricane season, pay for travel insurance so you can protect yourself against the unexpected. Virgin Islands in the Caribbean, possibly the most popular charter destination in the world. With manageable winds and short hops between islands, the BVIs are perfect for newbies but their sheer beauty, prevalent eating establishments and perfect weather bring back seasoned sailors again and again. Not to be missed are the Baths on Virgin Gorda, Foxy’s famous watering hole on Jost Van Dyke and snorkeling at the Indians. A highlight is the island of Anegada. Once completely off limits to charter boats, the 11-mile island on the horizon is like a siren’s song. Up until a few years ago, Anegada’s entrance was not easy to navigate. You had to line up compass bearings and keep a sharp lookout for coral while avoiding Anegada’s eighteen mile-long Horseshoe Reef, a notorious boat eater. Today, the entrance is well marked with buoys and unless the weather is howling, there’s no reason not to visit this quiet paradise, even if just to get away from the party scene. In the afternoon, make reservations at the Anegada Reef Hotel for a perfect candlelit dinner as you enjoy having your toes in the sand and a forkful of lobster in a dish of butter. Salt Island is home to the wreck of the Royal Mail Steamship, the Rhone, which sank in 1867 during a hurricane. The hulk collapsed long ago and now lays mostly flat along the bottom with little vertical structure. It’s easy to snorkel the length of the ship out to the bow buried in 60 feet of water and see it well even without dive gear. The ship is an eerie sight as you follow the long drive shaft until the propeller comes into full view. Trellis Bay highlights local artists and the Last Resort – an unlikely bar on Bellamy Cay in the middle of the bay. Founded by a Polish yachtsman named Wagner in the 1950s, this is a bar you can only visit by dinghy and even so, beware the coral heads that reach up for your outboard prop. Here you’ll find perhaps the best painkiller cocktails in all of the BVI. No visit to the BVIs is complete without at least a day at Jost Van Dyke, home of the Bubbly Pool and Foxy’s Tamarind Bar. Hike to the Bubbly Pool, a tiny inlet with a constricted rock opening to the northeast swell. Periodically, the waves come crashing through and churn up the waters in the pool with a great force that turns the water into foam. It’s like taking a dip in a washing machine as the water tosses you about and turns even staid adults into squealing kids. The BVI is a good place to visit about nine months a year, skipping August to October, which is hurricane season. Many sailors choose this destination as their first bareboat experience and none are disappointed.

eart disease is considered to be the leading cause of death in the US, closely followed by cancer. With some dietary and lifestyle changes you can dramatically impact the health of the arteries. Blood pressure rises can be seen for different reasons: * when the arteries become hardened due to a buildup of plaque (cholesterol) inside the arteries * when there is hardening of the walls of the arteries due to age and a lack of vitamin C in the diet which is needed to build collagen which in turn keeps the skin and arteries supple. * when the blood thickens and there are clots present When you look at dietary factors - the first thing that often comes to mind is SALT. Many of us are eating poor quality, heavily refined “table salt” and way too much of it. Sometimes by simply eating out less we see a dramatic drop in sodium levels but we also need to consider the sodium to potassium balance. There are countless studies to show that lowering sodium levels and upping potassium can significantly lower the BP. Low potassium can also manifest as fatigue and mental confusion. Banana’s, avocado, potato and Lima beans are particularly good sources of potassium. Other minerals to check are magnesium and calcium - it has been shown that there is a strong link between a deficiency in magnesium and risk of heart attack. Adding magnesium to the diet prevents muscle cramping and the heart is possibly the most important muscle in the body! Seaweeds, nuts, and whole grains are good sources of magnesium. People who show the lowest incidence of heart disease are vegetarians, Japanese, Koreans and the Inuit people. These are

Classic Grandma Pizza Recipe Pizza de la Abuela Makes 1 9”x13” pan pizza Prep Time: 15 minutes + 2 hours for pizza dough Cook Time: 10-15 minutes Ingredients: 12 ounces fresh mozzarella, torn 1 package of Colavita Crushed tomatoes or 1 jar of Colavita Marinara Sauce Flaky sea salt and crushed red pepper flakes Fresh basil for garnish Colavita Extra Virgin Olive Oil 1 recipe Homemade Pizza Dough or 1 recipe Homemade Semolina Pizza Dough

Para una pizza de 19”x13” Tiempo de preparación: 15 minutos + 2 horas para la masa Tiempo de elaboración: 10-15 minutos

Instructions: Preheat oven to 500°F for at least 1 hour before baking. Drizzle a 9”x13” rimmed baking sheet with Colavita Olive Oil, spreading it over the bottom and sides. Place dough onto baking sheet and stretch to outer corners of baking sheet, creating a rectangle. If the dough stretches back, let it rest for 5 to 10 minutes and stretch again. Once you’ve stretched the dough, allow it to rest for 10 minutes until slightly puffed. Spread about ½ cup of the crushed tomatoes on top of the dough. Place the torn pieces of mozzarella cheese on top of the crushed tomatoes. Drizzle with 1 tbsp Colavita Olive Oil and sprinkle with sea salt and crushed red pepper flakes. Lower the heat of your oven to 450°F and bake for 15-20 minutes (individual ovens will vary, so keep an eye on your pie!). Remove from the oven and slide onto a cutting board. Garnish with fresh basil, slice and serve.

ny company that names its product “Outcast” must have something good going on, right? Soundcast is that company. If you love great sound like I do, then you’ve probably tried other “portable” Bluetooth speakers, ranging from little cylinders, speakers built into coolers, or ‘boom box’ throughbacks. And as my Father wisely & often told me, “you get what you pay for.” None had the quality of sound that I desire. Personally speaking, I’m a sound-hound. I love good quality sound and frankly, it has to be portable. There’s nothing better than taking your favorite tunes with you, to the beach, to the bow, or in the cockpit. When my husband and I were cruising, I came up with some playlists to create a special atmosphere for specific times. Music always makes me feel good, and makes even the most tedious tasks, more enjoyable. My favorite playlist is still “Getaway”! I played it every time we pulled anchor to head off to our next port. performance for any environment. The VGX series are the world’s first outdoor Bluetooth speaker with capacitive touch interface. Wait! What? If you have a smart phone or device, then you already know what this is. A capacitive touch screen is a control display that uses the conductive touch of a human finger for input. The VGX5 model supports Bluetooth 4.2, NFC smartphone pairing (meaning, devices can pair without you pushing any buttons), and Qualcomm’s True Wireless Stereo, so that you can pair two identical speakers and operate them as a left/right stereo pair. The capacitive touch controls for play/pause, volume, and mute functions are located on top. The 17-inch-tall VG5 has a columnar form with a 6.0-inch downfiring woofer at the bottom and a pair of 3-inch full-range aluminumcone drivers on either side. These three drivers are bi-amplified, with 60 watts RMS going to the sub and 10 to the full-range drivers, giving the VG5 enough low-end booming sound to fill the expanses of any listening environment.
