2016 Progressive Insurance Miami International Boat Show Q&A with Cathy Rick-Joule - Show Manager

T

here has been much controversy in the last few months around the new location of the Miami Boat Show, which will move on February 2016 from the Miami Beach Convention Center to the site of the Miami Marine Stadium in Virginia Key. Both the Village of Key Biscayne and several South Florida environmental groups oppose the project. Yachting Times Magazine is featuring here a brief Q&A with Cathy Rick-Joule, the Show’s Manager. Yachting Times Magazine: What would the environmental impact be? Cathy Rick-Joule: The Miami International Boat Show has had a 30-year record of protecting and respecting the environment that surrounds its events, and we intend to uphold this track record. An initial field observation study conducted by Coastal Systems International analyzed the basin to determine if there would be any potential for environmental impact as a result of the boat show’s plans. The study showed that there was limited sea life in the basin, including the areas where pilings will be placed. We are working with the Miami-Dade Department of Environmental Resource Management, the Florida Department of Environmental Resources, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and other environmental agencies to ensure compliance with all requirements as we have always done. YTM: What measures are you taking to minimize this environmental impact if any? CRJ: We have been working with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and other regulatory agencies to ensure that any sea life in the

| 16 | www.yachtingtimesmagazine.com

area is not harmed and that we comply with all regulations. Part of this effort is the building of a new encapsulated dock system that is 100% EPA compliant for the 2016 show. The docks are encased in high-density one-piece molded polyethylene tubs that are permanently sealed. This design ensures a water-tight seal and prevents any material from entering the environment. YTM: What would the financial impact be? CRJ: The show is a tremendous economic driver for the state of Florida with an annual economic impact of $600 million annually, creating an excess of $30 million in sales tax. Both a domestic and international tourism driver, the Miami Boat Show attracts more than 100,000 visitors and fills 200,000 hotel room nights annually. YTM: How could you work together with those who oppose the project? CRJ: The National Marine Manufacturers Association is working closely with the City of Miami and Key Biscayne, and we remain optimistic that the City of Miami and the Village of Key Biscayne will be able to come to a resolution. Preparations continue for the 2016 Progressive Insurance Miami International Boat Show at Miami Marine Stadium Park and Basin, and we look forward to continuing the event’s 74-year legacy. NOTE: Yachting Times Magazine has been trying to reach South Florida environmental groups who oppose this project to hear their side of the story. If interested in sharing your views, we’ll gladly feature you in our upcoming Winter issue. In the meantime, we sincerely hope that both sides reach an agreement and are able to work together, in the best possible way, so that Virginia Key and Biscayne Bay remain protected from any harm.

eing able to photograph the Volvo Ocean Race was a dream come true. Living on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and specializing in nautical photography, has allowed me to photograph everything from catboat gatherings to schooner regattas. This past May, one of the stopovers for the Volvo Ocean Race was in Newport, Rhode Island. For over a week I attended press conferences and spent much of my time on a media boat in Narragansett Bay’s East Passage photographing the world’s best sailors. The last day of the stopover was the most exciting one: the media boat I was on followed the teams out over seven miles allowing me to take some of my best images. What a sight - thousands of people lined the shore of Fort Adams State Park giving the teams a rousing send-off as they headed across the Atlantic to Lisbon, Portugal. During this stopover, Leg 7, which ran from May 5 to 17, over 130,000 people visited Race Village at Fort Adams State Park.

This edition of the world’s longest professional sporting event and leading offshore sailing competition started in Alicante on October 2014 and ended in Gothenburg on June 2015. The race consisted of nine offshore legs and 10 in-port races that covered 38,739 nautical miles and crossed four oceans—Atlantic, Pacific, Indian and the Southern Ocean. Seven teams, 19 nationalities and an all-female team took part in the one-design event. This diverse fleet of sailors came from China, France, USA, UK, Belgium, Denmark, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, New Zealand, Sweden, Brazil, Netherlands, Switzerland, UAE, Argentina, Spain, Australia, and Antigua. Teams consisted of eight sailors along with a non-sailing multimedia reporter. The female team raced with 11 sailors and a non-sailing multimedia reporter. To qualify for the Volvo Ocean Race, boats were required to sail 2,000 nautical miles non-stop. Each of the participating teams were required to have two members on their crew that were born after October 1, 1984—the under 30s. The last leg was in Gothenburg, the second largest city in Sweden and home to Volvo. All of the Volvo Ocean Races have either visited or ended in this shipping and maritime center. Here Skipper Ian Walker and his crew aboard Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing sailed into Gothenburg after almost 39,000 nautical miles at sea and were presented with the Volvo trophy. ace officials and dignitaries recently gathered at the Royal Yacht Squadron’s Castle, in Cowes, England, to honor the winners of one of the most challenging offshore races. This year’s 2,800-mile race from Newport, Rhode Island, to The Lizard, a peninsula in southern Cornwall, England, drew entries from classic yachts to modern wonders. The Transatlantic Race is one of the world’s oldest transoceanic yacht races. The New York Yacht Club ran its first Transatlantic Race in 1866, 15 years after they won off the British (now the America’s Cup). The race is now held irregularly with the most famous being in 1905 when it was a political consequence in the build up to the First World War. Kaiser Wilhelm II, in his attempt to illustrate German supremacy at sea, presented a solid gold ‘Kaiser Cup’ as the prize for which the event would be raced. That race was won by the American schooner Atlantic, captained by Charlie Barr. The threemasted, 227” yacht completed the race in a remarkable 12 days and 4 hours, 1 minute and 19 seconds. One hundred years passed before that record was beaten.

America proved itself again when Chicagoan Bryon Ehrhart’s Reichel/Pugh 63 Lucky was the winner of this year’s Transatlantic Race organized by the Royal Yacht Squadron, the New York Yacht Club, the Royal Ocean Racing Club and the Storm Trysail Club. Jim Clark and Kristy Hinze-Clark’s 100’ Comanche recorded the fastest monohull crossing in 7 days, 11 hours, 35 minutes and 11

seconds (outside of the course record of 6 days, 22 hours, 8 minutes and 2 seconds set by George David’s Rambler 100 in 2011) and Lloyd Thomburg’s MOD70 trimaran Phaedo 3, the fastest multihull in a time of 7 days, 2 hours, 4 minutes and 5 seconds. ’ve sea trialed lots of boats in my career. Some I like, some I like less and I’m always leery of what I’ll find at the end of the dock on test day. A great boat is a welcome surprise so when I stepped aboard the Jeanneau Prestige 500 Fly and saw that it had a good story to tell, I was delighted. The Prestige line is 20 years old and over 2,500 yachts from 35 to 75 feet have been built. Prestige is the powerboat side of Jeanneau sailboats and technically a part of Groupe Beneteau although the two brands compete fiercely. The Prestige 500 is offered in two

La línea Prestige tiene más de 20 años y ha construido más de 2.500 yates de 35 a 75 pies. versions; Sport and Flybridge, and it’s expected that 80% of the models sold will be the Fly version. The hard-chine hull was designed from scratch to accommodate Volvo Penta IPS pod drives so there was no shoehorning of modern technology into an older hull. These pods allow for smaller engines that have better fuel economy and the placement of the engines is farther aft in the hull, which creates more interior living space. And of course, the best thing about the pods is that they make the boat more fun to drive and easy to maneuver, making just about any captain look like a star. On Deck Steps, both port and starboard, lead up from the swim platform to the aft cockpit where a settee is integrated into the transom and converts into a sunpad. On the Sport, the entire transom settee raises to expose access to a garage that will fit a ten-foot dinghy with outboard attached. The Fly model has an optional crew cabin. I doubt many American owners will have a professional captain on a vessel this size, but the separate cabin will be perfect for a grandkid or a teenager. Steps, on the port side of the cockpit, lead up to the large flybridge. The helm, with full controls and navigation electronics, is to port. Visibility is good from up here all the way to the bow so you can see anyone who is helping with anchoring or catching a mooring. A sunpad is next to the driver to starboard and will most likely be a favorite hangout. An optional second galley behind the helm seat includes a sink, fridge and electric grill. On the bow, a triple-wide sunpad lays flat or tilts up into a chaise and has an optional folding cabana for shade. It’s a very “loungeable” space. Between the aft cockpit, the flybridge and this bow sunpad,

aunque ambas marcas compiten fuertemente.

there are at least three exterior areas that allow small groups to congregate and socialize without disturbing one another. Accommodations There are some truly striking elements to the Prestige 500 Fly accommodations. First, this 50-footer feels like a 60-footer inside. Every inch both forward/aft and across the beam has been incorporated into a functional interior. Second, is the amount of light that comes in from the surrounding windows complete with opening sections. And third, is the way each space integrates with the other areas aboard for a finely-tuned flow. For example, the galley is aft and to port. From here the cook can pass meals forward to the portside dinette or directly aft to the party in the cockpit. The patented three-panel aft glass doors slide to both port and starboard to open up each side as needed. The divided floor plan is also a standout feature. For maximum privacy, the master stateroom in this three-cabin, two-head layout has completely isolated access. Steps across from the galley lead down behind the starboard side settee to a luxurious, full-beam master with a centerline queen bed. To port, there is a lounge with two seats and a vanity table next to a large window. A posh head with a separate step-down stall shower is forward. This kind of separation for owner’s accommodations is rarely seen on anything short of a superyacht. Forward are the guest quarters, accessed by a second set of steps below which an optional washer/dryer may be installed. To starboard, there is a shared bathroom that doubles as a day head and to port there is a guest cabin with twin singles and good storage. The VIP cabin is in the bow with an island bed that splits into two single | 28 | www.yachtingtimesmagazine.com

berths if desired. Just lift the aft end of each section of the bed and pivot outboard. Instantly, the cabin transforms from one appropriate for a couple to one that will accommodate kids or guests who prefer not to be that cozy. On the main deck level, the helm to starboard is well laid out and compact so most controls are easy to reach. Twin MFDs (Raymarine e120s) sit astride the wheel with a full complement of rocker switches to the left. The Volvo Penta joystick is outboard which is good for right-handed drivers and a second joystick, just aft, is for the bowthruster. I’m not sure a thruster is necessary in a boat with pods but it’s a handy backup for super-tight situations or that unexpected gust that sends the bow in the wrong direction. Performance We headed out on a sunny afternoon to see what the Prestige 500 could do. As we opened up the throttle outside the jetty, I actually noticed the lack of squeaks and rattles. The boat was solid and the joinery held together well. We popped up on plane just shy of 2000 rpm with little bow rise and took off like a shot over calm water. I maneuvered figure eights in our own wake but each time we crossed, there was barely a thump. We topped out at 3550 rpms and 28.2 knots of speed. Downwind we did a little better. Depending on the desired cruising speed, say between 16 and 20 knots, the range will be between 250 and 300 nautical miles with a tankage of 340 gallons of fuel. Everything about the ride was calm and quiet. The boat took the turns slowly and gracefully because the IPS system will not allow an out-of-control turn and the helm was responsive. For a while under way, I sat out on the aft cockpit settee. I wasn’t bounced or jostled

I stayed dry even in the turns. The Prestige 500 Fly is a well thought-out, coastal cruiser that will get a couple and their guests to their destination quickly and will even accommodate a professional crew, although it hardly needs one. Mostly, it will allow the owner to walk guests through the myriad onboard details and watch their eyes light up with the clever surprises this boat has up its sleeve. Now that is a boat story worth telling.

ufour Yachts has built over 80 models since the company was formed in 1965. Today, the French builder produces 300-plus hulls per year of various models in their Grand’ Large (cruising) and E (performance) lines. Their newest flagship is the 560, which is large, elegant and easy to handle. With its amazing dual-purpose cockpit and simple sail plan, it is equally well suited to on-the-water entertaining as it is to fast sailing. You could hardly ask for more from one platform. On Deck The GL560’s profile is low with a plumb bow and a hard chine. It looks serious and fast – maybe even a little aggressive. The beam is 16’ 6” and it flows well aft making it quite wide at the transom. The cockpit is divided into the “maneuvering” and “comfort” zones to segregate the business of running the boat from the enjoyment of lounging and entertaining. In the aft comfort zone, the “tower” holds a grill, a sink and a prep surface so you can stand on the drop-down transom and barbecue. The forward comfort area has twin settees, a sun pad and a folding table that holds an optional sink and fridge. In between, the working cockpit has twin helms and electronics on either side, easily reachable winches and good sightlines forward. Everything you need to tack or maneuver the boat is at your fingertips. Altogether, the various cockpit spaces can accommodate

a dozen people without anyone feeling crowded. On the other end, the bow has an integrated bowsprit that has a solid stainless steel structure overlaid with fiberglass to form a traditional anchor roller as well as an attachment point for a gennaker. The deck-stepped 7/8 fractional rig offers a versatile sail plan that provides a traditional or in-mast furling mainsail, an 87% self-tacking jib or an overlapping genoa, and an optional staysail that may be put on a furler. An asymmetrical spinnaker is optional and sail handling is easy even when short-handed. The jib sheets come back to winches on the cabintop freeing the Lewmar primaries to manage the double-ended mainsheet or spinnaker sheets. Halyards and lines are stowed in bins below the cockpit sole at the companionway so the cockpit is clear of clutter. Below the waterline, the GL 560 has a cast iron keel (7’2” or 8’ 2”) with a large bulb – a feature that has appeared on Dufour yachts for the past fifty years. An optional retractable bow thruster makes it easy to maneuver in tight quarters but also lifts up into the hull to reduce drag under sail. Impeccable Interior The GL 560 is revolutionary below and a far cry from traditionally dark and cramped sailboat interiors. The galley is especially unique in that it is far forward, ahead of the salon and it runs athwartships, across the entire interior. It’s separated from the salon by two low

alcance y buena visibilidad hacia adelante.

cabinets that hold dishes and a popup flatscreen TV. There’s even a built-in, hinge-out espresso maker and because this is a French boat, there’s storage for up to 39 bottles of wine, 25 of which can be placed in Dufour’s signature wine rack below the salon sole. Because the mast was moved farther forward than on the smaller models, the salon and galley area are enormous. To port is a U-shaped settee and convertible table while to starboard is an L-shaped settee with a forward-facing nav station. The design is Euro-chic with angular furniture, light wood veneers and clean lines everywhere the eye wanders. The sheer number of layout options underlines Dufour’s focus on personalization. The standard accommodations include one master stateroom forward, two guest cabins aft and three heads. An over/ under cabin may be added to starboard but that means losing the head and the nav station. Also, the master can be configured three different ways in the owner’s version: with a centerline berth and split head and shower compartments, with a Pullman berth to port and the head combined in the bow area and with an island berth that is offset to port allowing access to the bed from either side. A charter version splits this area into two forward cabins with separate shower and head areas just aft. In total, you can have five cabins below plus the crew cabin on bow accessible from the deck.

Performance On flat water with a decent breeze the GL 560 will sail 8-10 knots and points very well. The hard chine keeps her on her feet and comfortable with minimal heeling. The standard engine is 110 hp Volvo Penta diesel, which is upgradable to 150 hp and that may be advisable for anyone who plans to motor to weather frequently. In order to allow for placement of the engine farther aft in the boat (thereby creating more living space in the salon below) the engine/ transmission configuration is a V-drive rather than a straight shaft. On flat water, with the upgraded engine and a four-bladed propeller, she will motor at 9.4 knots at 2800 rpm. It’s a good design that can both cruise and club race well. However, it is an exceptional design that can sail as well as entertain a crowd with few compromises. It is indeed, the best of both worlds.

Sustainable Seafood:

How to purchase with confidence Pescado y marisco sustentable: cómo comprar con confianza By JULIA BEATY, Fisheries Social Scientist. Por JULIA BEATY, Científica Social del Sector Pesquero Article courtesy of | Nota cortesía de SAILORS FOR THE SEA.

A sea of choices n today’s globalized world, even those of us who live far from the coast have access to a plethora of seafood choices in our local restaurants and grocery stores. As you peruse your seafood options, you may find yourself wondering which are best to eat, and I am not just talking taste.

I

Which seafoods are sustainable? This simple question can feel overwhelming, but if you know the right questions to ask, you can find out which fish and shellfish were harvested sustainably and which were not. But what does it really mean for seafood to be sustainable? By the simplest definition, a seafood product can be considered sustainable if it’s harvested in quantities small enough to prevent a negative impact to its population, and is caught in a way that does not harm other species or marine habitats. Sustainability is all about the future productivity of marine ecosystems. But without a crystal ball, how can we know how the actions we take today will influence tomorrow’s ocean? Our seafood choices consist of many different species caught by using many different methods from all corners of the globe. So there is no single metric that can be used to determine if a given type of seafood is or is not sustainable. There are, however, a few key concepts that are commonly used to assess its sustainability. By understanding them, you too can become an educated seafood consumer.

The questions you should ask Use these five questions to find out if your seafood is sustainable: • What type of gear was used to catch this fish or shellfish? • How much bycatch does this gear usually cause? • Does this gear type damage marine habitats? • Where on the food chain does this species fall? • Is it wild or farm-raised?

Fishing Gear Gear type has a major impact on other species and marine habitats. And trust me, there are a lot of different types out there. There are two very basic generalizations that you should understand about the relationship between gear type and seafood sustainability. 1. Indiscriminant gear, such as purse seines, gill nets and trawls, usually results in more bycatch (more on that below) compared to selective gear, such as hooks, traps, and harpoons. Yes, you can buy seafood

caught by harpoon! 2. Gear that touches the seafloor (such as bottom trawls and dredges) is more likely to damage marine habitats than those that avoid the seafloor. 3. Ask your server or seafood dealer how the fish was caught. You can also find out how your favorite seafood is normally caught with a quick Google search. Discarded fish “Bycatch” refers to fish that are caught incidentally by fishermen who are usually targeting one or two species of fish. In the United States, fishermen are permitted to fish on a species-by-species basis and are subject to regulations on when and where they can fish, as well as the size and number of the fish they are allowed to keep. “Bycatch” can include a species that a fisherman is not permitted to harvest, such as a fish caught out of season, or one that is smaller or larger than the legal size. Sometimes fishermen accidentally catch too many fish of a particular species and they have to throw some back. This is also considered bycatch. Fishery regulations in the United States require that most bycatch be discarded at sea. Because the fish and shellfish discarded are usually dead, bycatch can have a major negative impact on marine ecosystems. Habitat damage If fishing gear touches the seafloor, it can damage marine habitats. This causes a major impact on other species and on the overall health of marine ecosystems. Bottom trawls, which catch fish by dragging heavy gear along the bottom, are the most notorious example of fishing-induced habitat destruction. They are particularly harmful to rocky habitats, sponges, and corals making pole-caught, handline, troll, or trap-caught seafoods better options. Food chain Fish that are low on the food chain are generally sustainable options because they are, for the most part, more abundant than fish that are higher on the food chain. They also reproduce at a younger age, which helps them recover relatively quickly from low to moderate levels of overfishing. In the U.S. we tend to prefer long-lived predatory fish such as cod, tuna, swordfish, salmon, and halibut. By expanding your tastes to include species lower on the food chain, you can support healthy marine ecosystems by reducing pressure on the larger species, several of which are overfished. Some tasty options that are low on the

Eat local: The fishing fleet of Kodiak, Alaska. By purchasing your seafood from a farmer’s market or Community Supported Fishery you can feel confident that you are eating locally and sustainably.

Be brave: Ask where your fish came from and how it was caught. Knowledge is key to eating sustainably. Look for fishing methods that are indiscriminate – for example fish caught by a line and poll has less bycatch than a net.

food chain include mackerel, tilapia, catfish, mussels, clams, and oysters. There are some exceptions to this rule, which is why it’s important to do a bit of research when considering your seafood options. For example, shrimp are low on the food chain, but in the U.S. it is mostly farm-raised in ways that cause significant habitat damage. Americans consume more than one billion pounds every year, and 90% of that is imported from overseas aquaculture facilities. Shrimp aquaculture operations in some developing countries have a particularly bad track record for habitat destruction and human rights violations. Wild vs. farm-raised Most of the seafood consumed in the U.S. is harvested from wild populations. However the amount of farm-raised fish and shellfish in U.S. seafood markets is rapidly expanding. There are many benefits associated with aquaculture, but also many environmental costs. It tends to generate strong opinions. Some argue that aquaculture is necessary to feed a growing human population while also supporting the health of marine ecosystems by taking pressure off wild stocks. Others argue that aquaculture relies too heavily on wild-caught fish to create feed for farm-raised fish, that it pollutes the environment with fish waste and antibiotics and that escapees can harm wild populations by introducing diseases or altering the wild gene pool. Farm-raised mussels, clams, and oysters are generally beneficial to marine ecosystems because they feed by filtering seawater and do not require artificial feeds. They also improve water quality in the surrounding region. If you purchase these farm-raised species you can feel confident that you are supporting healthy

Tiende a generar fuertes opiniones.

marine ecosystems. For other farm-raised species, speak with your seafood dealer and decide if they are sustainable options or not. In general, it is best to avoid seafood from aquaculture operations in developing countries because they tend to have fewer regulations compared to the United States. Eat local A great way to learn more about seafood sustainability is to buy your seafood locally and talk with fishermen and dealers specializing in seafood. You may be able to find seafood at your local farmers’ market or join a Community Supported Fishery (CSF). If you buy your seafood from a farmers’ market or a CSF, you can feel confident that it is sustainable. CSFs follow the model of Community Supported Agriculture in that they bring fresh, seasonally available, locally caught seafood directly to consumers. They also offer a great way to support both healthy marine ecosystems and coastal economies.

Take Action • Be brave, ask your server one of the five questions above every time you order fish. • Eat fish and shellfish that are caught locally. Your farmers’ market can be a great resource. • Join a Community Supported Fishery (similar to Community Supported Agriculture). Visit Communityfisheriesnetwork.org and Localcatch.org to learn more. • Before you head to dinner, find out what types of fish you prefer that are sustainable. y aquellos que logran escapar pueden dañar a las poblaciones silvestres incorporando enfermedades o alterando el pool genético silvestre.

aybe it’s the somber clothing; the women dressed in flowing black dresses and hijabs, or perhaps it’s the reserved way the locals interact, but the Maldives feel very sedate and very unsurprising. It’s not the kind of place where you’d expect to have 12 different names for a coconut. Or even where a coconut might be detained by the police. But during the 2013 election, a kihah (a young coconut) was suspected of being infused with black magic and was accused of vote-rigging in a key presidential election. It was later found innocent and released. Part of what makes the Maldives so fascinating is how

Pero durante las elecciones de 2013, se sospechó que un kihah (un coco joven) había sido imbuido en magia negra y fue acusado de fraude electoral en una clave elección presidencial. little most people know about this small Islamic country. The common perception is of a peaceful, sun-kissed Indian Ocean paradise that caters mostly to celebrities and honeymooners. In truth, it’s a deeply complex country with a population of 394,000 (one third of those being foreign or illegal workers). Most people either work in the resorts, for the government or the fishing industry. And right now, this Islamic republic is struggling to stabilize its nascent democracy. Until 2010, when the local tourism laws went into effect, visitors knew little about the internal workings of the country. All boaters ever saw of the Maldives were select ports and, if they were lucky, a couple of the 112 secluded private-island resorts. Most villages were off limits. But, with the changing of laws came a change in cruising itineraries—not only could boaters explore the tried and true ports of Uligamu, Kulhudhuffushi, Hulhumale and Gan, but with the new laws, the whole country was suddenly accessible. The Maldives are made up of thousands of islands, with tongue twister names, that are scattered between 26 atolls running down the country’s 510 miles in length. Only a portion of these islands offer secure all-weather anchorage and even fewer are highlighted in any sort of cruising guide. A visit here requires a combination of old-fashioned adventurous seamanship and the judicious use of modern technology. Basically, we checked the charts to pinpoint good anchorages and then download images from Google Earth to help with navigation. Our next step was to understand the weather. Since ancient times, the Maldivian people have organized their lives around two seasonal monsoons: the northeast monsoon or Iruvai and the south west monsoon called

Hulhangu. Iruvai means hot and dry and Hulhangu means hot and wet. Historically, Hulhangu starts on April 8 but the feedback we got from local fishermen is that due to climate change monsoons are changing. So, we should make sure to combine the historical data with the local weather reports. Cruising permits vary in length for the Maldives—we’d decided to take two months to explore the country. Our goal was to make our way south from Uligamu to Gan as the southwest monsoon set in—along the way, we hoped to discover the perfect mix of uninhabited islands, remote villages and luxurious resorts. An Island of One’s Own Uninhabited islands are the stuff of cruising dreams, and in the Maldives there are so many to choose from that our quest for the perfect one quickly became specific. Ruffushi in the north Thiladhunmathee atoll had spectacular snorkelling through fields of healthy coral. At one point, a curious turtle swam past us—slowing enough for a photo op. In the distance, we caught sight of a pod of dolphins and were tempted to swim against the current for a better look—something we were able to do in the Ari atoll a few weeks later when an entire pod of dolphins spent an hour swimming with us. Despite the great snorkeling, we moved on quickly from Ruffushi. Not only did the reef offer limited protection from the wind and waves but the anchorage was 80 feet deep, and there was only a distant sandbar to land on. Nolhivaranfaru’s secure anchorage offered more of what

we were looking for: nearby fishing, a good beach for the kids to play on during the day and an area perfect for barbeque potlucks at night. However, it didn’t have much of a reef to explore. While we’d eventually find the perfect uninhabited island further south at Thilamaafushi on the Faadhippolhu atoll, Nolhivaranfaru did have the lure of a nearby village. And when the distant loud speakers started to broadcast the ancient rhythms of a Koran reciting competition, we decided to leave our private tropical paradise to check out village life.

A man stopped us and shook our hand—welcoming us to the village. He pointed out his house which was surrounded by fruit trees and barely visible behind a high coral wall painted with political slogans. In the center of the village, we came across an ancient banyan tree that was shading a busy playground. From there, we followed the sounds of the Koran reciting competition to the school where we were shown some seats to watch how some little girls made their way through the text. At one point, one of the girls got so distracted by our presence - we must have been among the few tourists to visit the village -that she stumbled over her words. In other villages, where the locals were more used to visitors, our reception usually included a tour and a drinking coconut. On one island, we were invited to dinner by a local family and I asked if it was the novelty of having outsiders on the islands that made Maldivians so friendly to guests. Our host seemed surprised by my question and answered that while tourists may be new on some islands, hospitality isn’t. He explained that in a country of remote islands when a guest arrives, it’s important to give them refreshments and then show them around to make sure they’re comfortable and happy, “Isn’t that what all people do?” he asked. hombros y rodillas cubiertos, nos dispusimos a caminar por el pueblo de Nolhivaranfaru recorriendo desde casetas en la costa hasta la prolija cuadrícula de calles.

take luxury to a new level. While not all welcome visiting boaters (or have suitable anchorage for yachts) a number of them do offer day rates or short-stay options which will let you indulge in a special meal or a decadent massage. At Anantara Kihavah Villas, my family was hosted for two days and soon discovered that our plush, over-water bungalow was so well appointed it would be easy to spend our entire stay wandering between our private infinity pool, giant glass-bottomed bathtub and outdoor shower. But, despite the allure of all that fresh water, this would have meant missing out on a Maldivian cooking class and one of the most memorable meals we’ve ever had at Sea restaurant. While it may seem strange to need a vacation from sailing somewhere as gorgeous as the Maldives, just arriving at Anantara Kihavah’s reception and sipping champagne in the breezy entry felt special. By the time we were shown to our villa, we were completely relaxed. Part of the reason is, unlike in the villages, there’s no dress code in the resorts. Short skirts and bikinis are expected. The other difference is that unlike in the rest of the Maldives (including larger towns) alcohol is legal—so that welcoming glass of champagne was a special treat. Aside from the opportunity to shower as many times

a day as we wanted, resort life also gave us access to fine dining—something that is in short supply in the Maldives outside of the resorts. Seven restaurants offer up international options while the Spice Spoons cooking class let us try our hand at local specialties. One of the dishes we made was garudhiya, one of the Maldive’s national delicacies: a seemingly simple soup of slowsimmered fish broth, tuna and a few vegetables. In a modern overwater kitchen, offering gorgeous views of a vibrant reef, we started with a fragrant vegetable stock then added crunchy cabbage, spicy red onion, chillies and ruby cubes of fresh yellow fin tuna. Then we blended the soup with fresh coconut cream, creating a velvety version of garudhiya that was as sophisticated as the setting. Leaving Anantara Kihavah was difficult—but as we pulled away from our mooring, we had the sense that more adventure was scattered among the atolls to our south.

great meal includes a variety of elements. There’s the food: the base ingredients need to be fragrant and fresh before they’re combined with artistry by a skilled chef. Then it needs to be served in a gorgeous setting by wait staff who are passionate about their trade. And of course, a meal can be elevated from memorable to unforgettable when a talented sommelier is added to the mix, pairing each dish with a fine wine. Dinner at Sea restaurant at Anantara Kihavah resort in Baa Atoll in the Maldives falls right into this unforgettable category. He amused us by looking fierce while we enjoyed our meal. Each table has a book of Maldivian reef fish to help with identification and we quickly became familiar with the various fish that swam by. Our daughter Maia spotted a little orange and white anemone fish, “I found Nemo!” she gasped with excitement. Between courses, our charming waiter amused us with stories about growing up in the southern Maldives; giving us an insider’s glimpse into the local culture. He also had the skill of a dive master, and demonstrated he was as knowledgeable about the fish that swam by as he was about our meal when he pointed out a big grouper as it stalked a smaller fish; adding that extra element to an already extraordinary meal.

n a recent, high-season trip to Ibiza— where the sea is cerulean, the paella is fresh and the nights of extravagant parties run from dusk ‘til dawn—I was struck at the bohemian sensibilities of the Balearic revelers and holiday-makers alike. On a sail around the nearby island of Formentera, a man wore navy, nautically-inspired shorts with a varnished leather jacket and Fedora. Over a candlelight dinner at an elegant eatery back in Eivissa, Ibiza’s official name, a woman donned gemtone flats, billow herringbone pants and a diamond, tiered necklace. Men, who later on bought bottles of Dom Pérignon at the yacht club, mixed tie-die shirts with blazers and dress slacks. A day later, svelte models sashayed along Playa d’en Bossa in metallicembellished kaftans, leather pants and bikinis to electronic dance DJ Armin van Buuren’s impressive outdoor concert at the Ushuaïa Beach Hotel. Even the masterful DJ himself embodied that nonchalant rock ‘n’style of the right potage of urbane collectedness and flower-child ease. “Tonight, we are in a state of Trance!” he announced

as he played his biggest tracks of the summer to thousands of enthusiastic party-goers. The aesthetic is a bit iconoclastic for yachting, but it’s an eclectic way to spruce up your style as we head into cooler weather. Focus on adding a touch of shimmer and glimmer to your look. Take for instance, Ella Luna’s frothy white tunic dress with gold collar, or, Giuseppe Zanotti’s startlingly rock star-hip, python biker jacket. Feeling more subtle? Keep the glossy notes to your accessories by opting for Yliana Yepez’s iridescent mini Stella python bag, and Giuseppe Zanotti’s gold-tipped, whitesoled slip on. Kenzo’s sparking timepiece, and Chaumet’s dazzling Parure N°1 sapphire and diamond necklace, will undoubtedly add even more amp to your gleam. Additionally, tie-dyes and prints, gold zippers and black separates with energetic ornamentation, speak to a cool vibe. At the base of all things disco and downtown, are references to more classic elements: Chestnut browns and carrot, rustic knitwear, velvet with sheen. Consider Strelli Homme’s luxurious dress pants paired with Vans’ tiedye tee, or, Charlotte Olympia’s gem-studded flats and Marie Sixtine’s black slacks; both dynamic, but feasible combinations. While dancing to the great DJs such as Armin van Buuren is surely a highlight of Ibiza, other pleasures focus on adventure and leisure. In this edition of Yachting Times,

Mientras bailar al son del DJ Armin van Buuren es lo máximo en Ibiza, otros placeres son la aventura y el ocio. like companies that specialize in products to keep my electronic devices safe in the harsh environment that water-based sports or boating may present. Lifedge is just that sort of company, based in the United Kingdom. Their new Lifedge Ultimate Charge/Sync Cable was just released and with its patented anti-corrosion connectors, it’s that one piece of gear that should be on every boater’s gift list this season. The cable works with all Apple devices with a Lightning to USB connection, plus it’s 6.5 feet long which is quite convenient. It’s also 100 percent waterproof and guaranteed for life. While you’re at it, you may want to check out their Float Accessory. I remember almost losing a camera while snorkeling because the little strap that came with it wasn’t up to the job and broke. This handy strap is fully buoyant and will keep your iPhone or iPad safe (if it’s in a waterproof case, of course!). Visit www.lifedge.co.uk for more information.

McMurdo Smartfind AIS MOB Device + Fastfind 220 PLB

I

www

Dispositivo McMurdo Smartfind AIS MOB + Fastfind 220 PLB n keeping with the theme (UK companies that make Smart & Safe Boating equipment), I nominate the Smartfind S10 personal AIS Beacon. Don’t leave homeport without it. McMurdo’s Global Sales Director, Ross Wilkerson said, “The Smartfind S10 offers a major advance in MOB (Man Over Board) systems, recognizing that the key to successful recovery is the speed in which the mother vessel can be made aware of the casualty in the water. It is already making a real difference to the personal safety of mariners around the world.” The Smartfind S10 has been designed to be waterproof down to 984 feet and when manually activated, it transmits both AIS and GPS data to the vessel and to other ones equipped with AIS, within a four-mile radius. McMurdo introduced the world’s first personal AIS Man Overboard (AIS MOB) device three years ago, which was the life-saving device in the high-profile rescue of Andrew Taylor in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race. They also make the world’s first compact Personal Locator Beacon (PLB), the Fastfind 220 in the same price range as the Smartfind 220 (about $300). You must register it with the Search And Rescue Satellite Aided Tracking (SARSAT) system operated by the National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). And like the Smartfind, it has an internal GPS receiver that can pinpoint your location to within about 200 feet. In an emergency, your PLB will send a coded message via global 406 distress frequency, which is then transmitted by satellite back to earth to the nearest search and rescue station, bringing help to your precise location. Visit www.mcmurdomarine.com/where-to-buy, to find one new you. Stay safe out there and have fun on the water.
