The Story In the summer of ‘42 in Argentina during the Buenos Aires - Mar del Plata regatta, Recluta, a Camper & Nicholsons yawl from 1901 captained by its owner Charlie Badaracco, ran aground in the shallow waters of Cape San Antonio during the night in the middle of a storm. In the attempt to free the yacht, the crew engaged in a swift maneuver causing a man to fall overboard. When tacking to rescue him, Recluta ran aground again. This time forever. Naval designer Germán Frers Senior (1899-1986) soon offered Recluta a second chance: he redesigned it and began its reconstruction with the pieces rescued from the shipwreck. It was planned to be the largest yacht ever built in South America at the time. Despite his

he Story Behind Recluta is the tale of a nautical epic that began in 1942 and spanned nearly eighty years in the Frers dynasty of naval architects. It tells the story of a sixty-seven-foot wooden sailing yacht that has traveled across generations, and is one of the projects closest to the heart of renowned yacht designer Germán Frers.

enthusiasm, work was delayed as Europe suffered at the hands of the Second World War and there was a shortage of materials to build the ship. As the war persisted, the project was finally suspended. Recluta “ran aground” again. Decades later, world-famous yacht designer Germán Frers discovered among old files those magnificent designs made by his late father. He then decided to restart the project of building Recluta and, at the young age of eighty, has finally launched a replica of this stunning yacht to enjoy with his family. The Yacht Buenos Aires has a long tradition of excellent wooden boatbuilding with craftsmen who are truly world class. Recluta is living proof of their skill. It is built as a classic, double-skinned like the original would have been, and using no modern materials or weight saving short cuts. The bronze winches are not self-tailing but standard winches by The Classic Winch Company in Holland, and the custom-made deck hardware is all from Argentina. The woods used throughout were laminated Viraró for the stem, ribs, bilge planks, and deck beams; Cedar for the double-skinned hull; Kiri and Chestnut wood to plate the bulkheads and the doors inside the cabin; and Sytka Spruce for the mast and boom. Recluta is an ocean racer, built as a cruiser-racer so she could offer

comfort to the designer’s family and friends. Frers is an accomplished racer who likes to helm his yachts in the Mediterranean Classic Circuit. As soon as Recluta was launched, she embarked on an Atlantic crossing and arrived in the Med in time to take part in several Classic regattas this past summer. Frers sails with his family and crew from Argentina who have become friends. His daughter trims the mainsail, his son is tactician, his grandson is on the coffee grinder during the whole regatta day working hard trimming the big headsails. A true family affair! The Book Recluta’s adventure is documented by Zelmira Frers, granddaughter and daughter of the renowned Frers yachting designers. As an architect, creative director and photographer of immense sensitivity, Zelmira connects with the legacy of her grandfather (whom she never met) and with the instinct and precision of her father, to recreate the story of Recluta in a book of immense historical, aesthetic and emotional value. “This book allowed me to review the concept of time, the flowing rythm of life that transcends and is transmitted from generation to generation,” says Zelmira Frers. To connect with the stories on nautical adventures, she read all those her grandfather wrote about the boats he designed. “I got to know him through those stories he

wrote, and I discovered an adventurous, curious man with a great sense of humor. From him I learned that life needs to be embraced as it comes. From his ability to adapt on high seas, I learned to accept that we are at the mercy of nature and the unexpected, and we must be smart enough to act accordingly.” For three years she carefully filmed and photographed every detail of the building of Recluta, immersing herself in the working routine of her father Germán Frers and his team of nautical carpenters. “I believe that the history of a community or a culture is built by small individual voices. There are stories that bear witness to changes in times and traditions. In this particular case, Recluta is a testimony to a thriving period in Argentina, when the nautical industry was at its peak, the time of my grandfather. Today, this industry lives in a different reality. In this book I want to immortalize part of the beauty of the history of Argentina’s nautical development, and its silent protagonists.” This book covers the passion, tradition and sense of excellence of a family lineage, which once again hoists sail to create a project, this time uniting three generations. The book will be a delight for those passionate about the yachting world, as well as anyone who loves design, architecture, history and art. It can be purchased at www.thestorybehindrecluta.com

Powered by a 170HP engine and reaching speeds of up to 50mph, the Speedster delivers the performance to match its beautiful looks. The build quality and workmanship are nothing short of first class. So much so that the official Porsche has featured the Speedster boat on its own website, endorsing what Seven Seas has created. No surprise then that Seven Seas Yachts Americas has already delivered six Speedsters to happy US owners. Seven Seas in Fort Lauderdale usually has a boat or two in stock. No es de extrañar entonces que Seven Seas Yachts America ya haya entregado seis Speedsters a felices propietarios estadounidenses. hree things strike you as you cruise the Exumas chain of the Bahamas: the islands cover a lot of territory, the water is really shallow, and you’ll never – ever – find the right words to describe the colors of the sea. I’ve seen beautiful water in different parts of the world – the Cyclades Islands of Greece, the reef over Huahine in French Polynesia and the perfection that is the Tobago Cays in the Grenadines. But never have I seen so many shades of blue and green as I witnessed in the Exumas. As a cruiser, it’s easy to get lost in the Exumas eddy. Boats enter and stay – for years. But with a weeklong charter, you have a packed schedule which is both a blessing and a curse. A curse for obvious reasons – you can’t stay forever. A blessing for the same reason and that means you’ll have to find your way out of the eddy and back to doing something productive with your life. We chartered Malouna, a 45-foot Lagoon catamaran with Sunsail out of Nassau. The chain starts about 20 miles south of Providence Island after you cross Yellow Bank, a bar of nasty looking coral heads. With a short itinerary, the challenge with the Exumas is what to cover on the way down, versus what

Charteamos Malouna, un catamarán Lagoon de cuarenta y cinco pies con Sunsail desde Nassau. islands to pick up on the way back north. Even if we explored only the Northern and Central Exumas, we’d be covering over 170 miles round trip and no matter how you slice it, the first crossing is long and into the wind. Early afternoon on the first day brought us to Allan’s Cay and its famous iguanas that come running when they see a dinghy pull up on the beach. They love fruit but so do the seagulls which are nasty little bandits that will attack you, your goodies and the iguanas. Feeder beware. We had some fun with the lizards and with plenty of daylight left, we set course for Shroud Cay at the top of the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park, a 176-square-mile preserve with 15 major isles. Shroud has tidal creeks, one of which allows motorized traffic. A meandering dinghy trip through the mangroves with turtles all around brought us to Driftwood Beach that looks like a Hollywood set of a desert island. We pulled the dinghy up on the beach and then waded back into the water to catch a wonderful drift ride toward the Exumas Sound (east side of the chain). A sandbar stops you from being washed out to sea so you just walk back up the beach and do it again, and again – like a ride at Disneyland. The colors of the water as they swirl between the sandbars give your camera a workout but no matter how hard you try, it’s impossible to capture what can be seen by the naked eye. Warderick Wells was the next stop with a walk to Boo Boo Beach, a pile of driftwood inscribed with boat names. It’s a sort of cruisers’ shrine that keeps a silent record of all who pass, until the next hurricane blows it clean off the island. Having paid for a mooring ($100), we opted to stay the night. The next morning, we headed down to Big Major on Fowl Cay for the world-famous swimming pigs. There are about 50 of them, all jostling for whatever food arrives via dinghy. Some are big and demanding, some are tiny and shy, but all enjoy a treat. Just around the corner is Thunderball Grotto, a cave

desagradable.

that was once a site for a James Bond movie. Two tips on this cave: 1) try to go at lowish tide in the morning when there are fewer visiting dinghies and 2) take some reef shoes to walk up to the top to jump through the hole in the ceiling and drop forty feet into the water below. We were only a few days in but not having the luxury of time like real cruisers, we had to turn back north so we set course for O’Brien’s Cay and the “Aquarium”. We picked our way there carefully and at one spot the crew thought we were anchoring because we came so close to land. There were at least five different hues of aquamarine waters around us that changed with the sand and water depth. It was distracting but so was the narrow pass we were threading. The Aquarium is a small rocky cove with tons of fish that are well trained. Bottles filled with oatmeal and water will cause a fish frenzy. Nearby is a small plane in about 10 feet of water that’s an excellent snorkeling target. Of course, it comes with a price because everyone then has to get back in the dinghy from deep water. That’s always hard and never pretty. We had stretched our itinerary as far as we could and it was time to turn around so we enjoyed a nice sail north to Norman’s Cay to check out the real sunken airplane attraction – a much larger plane that sits just below the surface.

1980s, Carlos Lehder of the Medellin drug cartel was running a lucrative operation from this island ferrying drugs into the U.S. One of his pilots missed the runway with a load of cocaine. The fuselage is cracked open so you can snorkel inside and all around the wings and engines. A last stale baguette and our oatmeal bottles did the trick again with the fish and even a large stingray glided back from the nose cone to check out the treats. Crossing Yellow Bank back to the north was uneventful but also lacked a breeze so we motored to Rose Island and dinghied to Footprints beach bar. From here, it was an easy jump back to Palm Cay the next morning where the base drivers met us via dinghy before we reached the marina entrance. A charterer had landed his boat on the rocks just outside the entrance the week before so the base was taking no chances and insisted that we leave the driving to them. Iguanas, pigs, some heart-stopping navigation and excellent snorkeling – what’s not to love? It was all amazing but the real draw was that every day brought a new hue of blue that I’d swear I never saw before. I wished my entire wardrobe could be made of the various shades of Exuma waters. I’d never have to wear the same color twice! Those colors will make me visit the Exumas again. Oh, who am I kidding? I’d be a lifer in that chain if I could and let’s face it, being productive is overrated.

Esos colores me harán volver. Oh, ¿a quién engaño?

nveiling our extensive property redevelopment this season, and with a new selection of villas ideal for social-distancing, Le Sereno is primed to welcome [visitors] and offer a safe and unforgettable experience,” wrote Luis Contreras, owner of Sereno Hotels. Le Sereno, with its expansive cerulean, private waterfront, exclusive bungalows and villas, is located on Anse de Grand Cul de Sac, at the east end of the Caribbean island of Saint Barthélemy, commonly known as St. Barts. This picturesque French marine reserve boasts turquoise waters and a protected coral reef that is a fragile and battered ecosystem. The hotel’s recent redesign took sustainable practices and climate change into consideration: There are new solar panels, energy efficient upgrades, in addition to new water systems that desalinate ocean water, use it in the hotel, and around the grounds. Yet nothing compares to the mesmerizing views: a palette of aquamarine and Caribbean blue. Here is the source of inspiration for Yachting Time’s style and design this season.

n the heart of Coconut Grove stands a sophisticated skin clinic run by Dermatology PA Cornell graduate Paula Brezavscek. In its warm setting, youthfulness is subtly restored to each individual’s natural beauty by using the most modern, innovative and effective scientific advancements with a holistic, proactive approach. As Paula herself explains: “I feel more like an artist and sculptor instead of a dermatologist PA, and I have found a new passion as a “restoration artist.” I believe in describing the aging process to my patients and explaining to them how I can interrupt this with the variety of non-surgical procedures available today. Each person is unique, and there is so much beauty in that fact, so I believe it is best not to alter faces, but refresh them, using the least invasive processes possible, and the most natural as well. This is art, and art is interpreted individually. I do believe in subtlety, and my work is my perspective of art. I take pride in being a cosmetic injector whose work is imperceptible to most, as I strive to maintain my patients looking natural, unaltered, and individualistic.” Are you interested in preventing aging process? Would you consider having minimally invasive procedures performed along your lifespan in order to maintain collagen levels within the skin and therefore decrease the rate at which you visually age, in order to “look good” for your age and ultimately avoid having cosmetic surgery? If your ultimate goal is to feel good about the skin that you are in, you should definitely consider visiting Azala for a consultation with Paula. Azala is located on 3444 Main Highway, Third floor, Coconut Grove, FL.
