How a Dollar Academy Travel Scholarship Opened the Door to Volunteering in Sri Lanka

The Chapman/Buist Travel Scholarship is an annual prize awarded to Form VI Dollar Academy pupils who have a vision for the future and an interest in understanding and experiencing other cultures to see first-hand the challenges and opportunities they face.

In 2023, Mia Reid-Thomas (Former Pupil 2022) had the life-changing opportunity to travel to Sri Lanka and volunteer at an orphanage in the coastal town of Ambalangoda. This experience, made possible through the Chapman/Buist Travel Scholarship, not only allowed her to support children in need but also deepened her understanding of a different culture and helped her grow in confidence and adaptability.

“I was inspired to apply for this travel prize after hearing friends share their experiences from similar volunteering programmes, ” she explained. “Their stories were incredibly motivating, and I knew I wanted to embark on a journey that would allow me to make a meaningful impact while immersing myself in a new culture.” 1

Each afternoon, after the children returned from school, she spent time at the girls’ home, helping them with their English through storytelling, games, and arts and crafts. Beyond education, her goal was to create a fun and supportive environment where the girls could feel engaged and encouraged. With around 30 children at the home, ranging from ages 3 to 17, every day was different, filled with laughter, learning, and meaningful interactions.

One of the most memorable moments of her trip came on her very first day at the orphanage. As she arrived, several of the girls ran up to her with open arms, greeting her with hugs and smiles. However, she also noticed a few children standing back, more hesitant and reserved. Over time, through patience and kindness, she was able to build trust with these girls. As the weeks passed, she saw them slowly come out of their shells, eagerly participating in activities and seeking her out for games and conversation. Even with language barriers, she discovered the power of non-verbal communication and the importance of simply being present. “It was an incredibly special moment when the shyest girls finally opened up to me, ” she recalled. “We couldn’t always communicate in words, but over time, we built a bond through shared activities, smiles, and laughter. That was one of the most rewarding aspects of the entire experience.”

Reflecting on the trip, Mia expressed sincere gratitude to the donors who made it all possible. Their support not only funded her travel but also enabled her to bring essential supplies for the children, including colouring books, pencils, school jotters, and stickers; small gifts that brought immense joy. More than that, their generosity gave her the chance to form meaningful connections, leaving a lasting impact on both her and the children she worked with.

Mia’s story is a powerful reminder of how donor support can extend far beyond financial assistance, it can open doors to new experiences, foster global citizenship, and create lasting positive change. Thanks to the kindness of Dollar’s supporters, this Former Pupil’s journey of giving will continue to inspire others for years to come.

Background to the award: Roy and Colin Chapman and Sonia Buist (nee Chapman) were born in India and moved to Dollar in 1945, at the end of World War II. They are funding this Travel Award in appreciation of the superb education they received at Dollar Academy and the expectation that the recipients find that travel in resourcepoor countries can be transformational in deepening their understanding of the responsibilities and opportunities we all have to make the world a better place “I cannot thank the donors enough for the opportunity,” she said. “Their generosity allowed me to step outside my comfort zone, experience a new culture, and most importantly, make a difference in the lives of the children, even in small ways. I will always be grateful for this unforgettable experience.”
