President’s Report I trust all our members who attended the Adelaide Royal Show have now recovered and are back in the swing of things. The Show was a success, with most exhibitors very positive about the conduct of the event. In ZH VDZ VRPH FKDQJHV WR WKH SURJUDP LQFOXGLQJ $JLOLW\ WDNLQJ FHQWUH VWDJH RQ WKH ÀUVW Saturday. While this was successful in many respects, there are some areas that will require IXUWKHU UHYLHZ DQG ÀQH WXQLQJ ,Q SDUWLFXODU WKH XVH RI WKH PDLQ EHQFKLQJ DUHD GLG QRW SURYLGH the level of activity or engagement anticipated by the public and our sponsors with minimal demonstrations in that area. As always, there is room to review, learn and improve for future years. Of great importance is the progress being made in relation to David Roche Park. NOMINATIONS CLOSE ON FRIDAY 30 OCTOBER 2026 AT 4.00PM Nominations for Council With nominations being called for in September/October 2026 for the election in February 2027 for half the officers of the South Australian Canine Association (SACA) Council, required to serve for a three-year term, it is relevant to provide the following information for interested members. SACA (trading as Dogs SA) is a member of the Australian National Kennel Council Ltd (trading as Dogs Australia) and is the controlling canine body for the State. It is responsible for matters relating to breeding standards, the registration and exhibition of pure-bred dogs as well as the promotion and encouragement of recreational, sporting, training and trialling activities of Dogs SA registered dogs. Dogs SA is a non-profit organisation. It relies heavily on the support and voluntary involvement of many people to service its members and affiliated club organisation. Dogs SA is governed by an elected Council comprising a President, Vice-President and nine Councillors. The Council determines policies and procedures within the limits imposed by the SACA Constitution and Rules, the ANKC Ltd Rules, Regulations, Codes and the regulatory environment of Common Law and legislative obligations associated with State and Local Government bodies. The officers of Council and members of supporting Committees are not renumerated for their services or travelling expenses. Any member considering nomination to a position on the Council should understand that regular evening meetings must be attended in person, and one must have available time to commit to the work involved including participating in various Council Committee meetings and activities. You must be prepared to serve as a team player and be able to offer to Council with enthusiasm, skills and experience required to help chart and drive the future viability of the Association. A GOOD NEWS STORY
Booker as a Delta Therapy Dog As you may remember Booker moved to Canberra in 2024 & whilst looking for new friends & experiences, we decided to try out volunteering with Delta Therapy Dogs. For those who have not heard of this organisation they are a for-purpose organisation who deliver animal assisted services to hospitals, aged care facilities, mental health facilities, palliative care wards, disability organisations, schools & other workplaces. Booker applied in early 2025 & he was invited to attend a Canine & Handler assessment session in May later that year. These assessment sessions are held twice a year in Canberra. So, we set off for the other side of town to a Scout Hall in Ainslie, where we were met by a group of volunteers & coordinators. This assessment was to GHWHUPLQH %RRNHU·V WHPSHUDPHQW UHVSRQVH WR GLIIHULQJ SHRSOH HQYLURQPHQWV Prior to this assessment occurring, I had been interviewed in relation to my reason why I wanted us to volunteer, this was conducted via video, references & vet checks were provided. Delta Therapy Dogs seek dogs who are aged over 18 months but under 9 years of age, who are attentive & responsive to instruction & basic cues such as sit & stay & who are attentive & calm when approached by various people. The volunteer also must pass scrutiny too; needing to be able to provide a consistent commitment to Delta Therapy Dogs & enjoy engaging with people. Both dog & volunteer need to have a strong bond with each other & be responsive to each other. 2Q WKH DVVHVVPHQW GD\ %RRNHU , HQWHUHG WKH 6FRXW +DOO ZKLFK ZDV D FRUUXJDWHG WLQ VKHG ZLWK D ZRRGHQ ÁRRU VR LW ZDV YHU\ QRLV\ )LUVWO\ %RRNHU stayed with the assessor whilst I left the room to determine how he would react, he was not that keen on that idea, but he knew which door I was behind & did not move until I reappeared. We were then assessed on a number of other tasks, for example we had to calmly walking through a small crowd of people using various mobility aids. The good news was that Booker and I successfully passed, the assessor stating that she was so impressed that he went around & greeted every SHUVRQ WKHUH 2QH SHUVRQ SLSHG XS VDLG KH GLGQ·W JUHHW PH DW ZKLFK %RRNHU WXUQHG ZHQW RYHU WR WKH YRLFH OHDQW KLV KHDG DJDLQVW KHU OHJ IRU D pat. (This is a favourite trick of his) Then it was on to be photographed for our ID badge (see above) & measured for our T shirt & bandana. Within a month we had been onboarded with agreement & screening requirements which included a police check & working with vulnerable people check being conducted, we received our assignment which consists of fortnightly visits to a local dementia ward. Which we have now been attending until recently regularly for a year. (Currently I have been unwell so not able to visit but we are hoping to get back into the swing very soon.) Booker has learnt how to go up & down in the lift, that there is sometimes cheese with afternoon tea & that sometimes things are going to take a while so he might as well lay down and have a snooze. 0RVW VHVVLRQV JR IRU DERXW ² PLQXWHV 7KH ÀUVW WLPH %RRNHU ZHQW ZH JRW EDFN KRPH DW SP KH KDG D VPDOO VQDFN WKHQ ZHQW WR VOHHS RQ WKH couch till 6pm, got up had tea, a wee etc, then went back to sleep at 6.30 & slept without moving (on the couch mind you) until 7am the next morning! But now as soon as the bandana comes out & I am in my red T shirt he is rushing to get into the car, he knows when we turn into the carpark & gets ready for work. He has met a variety of interesting people, many who have or had their own dogs & miss them terribly. He brings smiles to not only the patients & their families but also the staff, one nurse when he sees Booker literally drops everything & runs over to cuddle him, he misses his dog in Nigeria. Another patient he met was a shearer & roustabout in his younger days & spoke about missing his 3 dogs, he had been in hospital for several months. The next time we visited his niece was there & said Uncle you were not kidding when you said a “golden dog had visited you” (She thought he had made up the story). Others want their picture taken with him so they can show family who has visited. Another lady who was a patient for over 3 months, would always don the brightest red lipstick & have the biggest smile when she saw Booker, we spent a lot of time with this lady as WKH GD\ ZH ÀUVW YLVLWHG VKH KDG MXVW OHDUQW WKDW KHU 3HNLQHVH KDG SDVVHG VR VKH ZDV YHU\ XSVHW %RRNHU VDW WKHUH ZLWK KLV KHDG RQ KHU ODS ZKLOVW she cried & told us all about her dog. On another day we helped her celebrate what would have been KHU SXSS\·V ELUWKGD\ %RRNHU KDG FKHHVH WKDW GD\ D IHZ UHG OLSVWLFN NLVVHV RQ KLV KHDG 3HUKDSV WKH cutest story to be told, was when we were asked by family to visit a young girl who was playing in the sunroom whilst the family were talking with the nurses about Granma. When I introduced Booker to her as sometimes being called Books for short, I was very soundly told that he was not a “Books because these are books (pointing to books on a bookshelf) & you open them up to read, you cannot do that with a GRJ µ VKH GLG DJUHH KRZHYHU WR JLYH KLP D SDW :H KDYH ORWV RI SHRSOH DVNLQJ DERXW %RRNHU·V EUHHG ZLWK VHYHUDO JRRJOLQJ WR ÀQG RXW PRUH IRU WKHPVHOYHV %RRNHU DOZD\V SRVHV IRU SLFWXUHV DFFHSWV FXGGOHV & cheese or the special treats that I carry especially for people to give him with the utmost gentleness & care. Booker is always being complemented on being so patient, calm, receptive & kind. He just manages to win hearts from the time he jumps out of the car in the carpark until he leaves. You can see people deliberately waiting or coming over to say Hi & have a pat & cuddle.
