The Seventy Fourth Annual General Meeting of the South Australian Canine Association (Trading as Dogs SA) was held 15th March 2026. We did make quorum with just over 40 members in attendance. The meeting itself was uneventful as there was nothing on the agenda which could be considered controversial. The most interesting part of the night was the open discussion with a number of suggestions being put forward by the members present. These suggestions will be discussed and many developed further by Council. I thank all those members who attended the meeting and participated in the open discussion that pursued.
Adelaide received some very welcome rain over the past month which will assist in the recovery of the lawns. With the rain we are also seeing some milder temperatures which indicates the start of many of the sporting disciplines. I encourage all members to visit the disciplines be they conformation or sporting just see what is available for members and their dogs. It is about being active and socializing with friends and others with like interests. Also encourage your not so doggy friends who may become interested and reconsider their thoughts that a dog is just something you have at home and there are a lot more activities open to them.
With the war in the Middle East continuing and the cost of fuel rising it will hit our affiliates particularly those in the country areas. I urge all members to rally around these club and where possible find a way to assist them. From all reports the fuel crisis will be here for a number of months yet as, even if the war concludes it will still take months to ramp up production and distribution.
Nothing has been heard in relation to the proposed new draft of the standards and guidelines for the breeding of Dogs and Cats. This is to be expected with the state election now in full swing. This will come back on the political agenda soon after the election has been declared and considering all indications are a return of the Labor Government nothing will change.
As notified in the March Journal the Dogs SA Constitution was removed from the AGM Agenda. This was primarily due to the number or regulation changes being considered by Dogs Australia and also the redrafting of our own rules which will need to align to both Dogs Australia and our constitution. The Constitution will be dealt with at a Special General Meeting (SGM) of members in the near future. Council has amended the constitution which was presented in 2025 to reflect the considerations of the members. The amended constitution and rules (to be changed to By-Laws) will be available for review and comment by the members prior to the SGM.
Please consider what you put on Face Book and other social media as a small negative comment will inevitably blow out into a major issue once the key board warriors get involved. If you have an issue come and talk to us to see if it can be fixed with out going out of control. Remember it is becoming human nature to promote the negative which will in turn out weigh the positives.

RULES FOR AGILITY NOT FOR COMPETITION (NFC) Runs (07/21)
Current Rule:
1.2. NFC and Competition Class Eligibility
A NFC run in a specific class replaces the dog’s competition run in the class for which it is normally eligible. An exception is made for a dog entered under the Junior Handler NFC category.
A handler who elects to undertake a NFC run in either of the Agility Novice, Excellent, Masters, or Elite classes will be excluded from undertaking a competition run in any of those classes in that trial. However, the dog can compete in Jumping and/or any Open classes. Similarly, a dog may run NFC in a Jumping class and still be eligible for competitive runs in Agility classes. Open classes can be run as NFC. A dog entered in NFC in an Open class will not be excluded from competing in Novice, Excellent, Masters, or Elite in that trial.
NFC runs will be deemed to be Non-Qualifying runs for the purposes of Annual Awards.
A Junior Handler NFC run does not replace or exclude a competition run for the entered dog in any class in that trial aside from Novice Agility or Novice Jumping.

PRESS RELEASE
Ehrlichiosis in Australiathe advancing threat
Cases of Canine Ehrlichiosis have now been seen extensively across northern Australia, from Western Australia, Northern Territory, Northern and Northwestern Queensland and down through northern parts of South Australia. This is no longer a notifiable disease as the condition is now seen as endemic in these areas and the chance of eradication of this terrible disease has long gone. There is still a biosecurity obligation to take all reasonable steps if you suspect you have an infected dog to prevent further spread of this disease.
Cases have been reported in every state bar Tasmania, however, at this point in time, cases reported in both NSW and VIC have been from dogs that have travelled from the Northern Territory. There are new restrictions on dogs travelling into Tasmania as a result.
The number of areas where cases have been reported in QLD has increased and at latest reporting (early 2026), many north and north western districts have been listed including Mt Isa, Townsville, Carpentaria to list a few.
Any dog that is travelling through brown dog tick infested areas of Australia (including the whole of Queensland) may be at risk of infection. Brown dog tick infested areas include northern NSW, and with increasing climate warming, this line may push ever southwards. Maps that show the extent of where the brown dog tick is found throughout Australia can be seen on most (DAFF) Government sites.
Equally, most state web sites now have fairly up-to-date information available on Ehrlichiosis, the disease, its treatment and ways to try and prevent infection.
This is a deadly disease, and all dog owners should be aware of this advancing threat.
Best sites to check:-
• Australian Government’s Department of Agriculture: Search Results - DAFF - review details on Canine Ehrlichiosis guidelines for dog owners and guidelines for veterinarians.
• Ehrlichia canis information for veterinarians | Business Queensland - updated 4.11.25.
I would strongly recommend that all owners regularly check their individual state’s information bases (usually the Department of Agriculture) for regular updates on this fairly rapidly moving situation. While 2 of these sites are aimed at veterinarians, they offer very good information about the disease itself, its diagnosis, treatment and above all, prevention!
Check dates, recent updates are important to keep in mind as the most current information available of where the deadly disease is moving.

Accidental Breeding Avoiding
Accidental breeding in dogs is more common than many owners realise and can lead to unexpected financial, emotional and health challenges. A single unplanned mating may result in a litter of puppies requiring veterinary care, vaccinations, microchipping, and responsible rehoming. Beyond cost, there are welfare concerns — particularly if the parents have unknown genetic backgrounds or health issues that could be passed on.
One of the main causes of accidental breeding is inadequate supervision. Female dogs can come into season as early as six months of age, and male dogs are highly driven by scent. Even a brief escape from a yard or an unsecured gate can result in mating. Many owners also underestimate how persistent male dogs can be when a nearby female is in heat.
Some helpful hints to avoid this from happening
1. NEVER leave them unsupervised together, even for a minute
2. Keep the female dog inside and the male outside (or vice versa)
3. Use separate rooms with secure doors
4. Consider temporary boarding for one of the dogs
5. Secure Fencing around the home
6. Avoid Public Places During Heat Cycle
7. Skip dog park visits completely
8. Avoid pet stores and dog-friendly cafes
9. Don’t schedule playdates with other dogs
10. Take walks in less populated areas
11. Training a strong recall and obedience skills can also help reduce risk in unexpected situations.
12. Spay or Neuter
13. And again, NEVER leave them unsupervised together, even for a minute
Responsible pet ownership includes planning ahead. By understanding reproductive cycles, securing environments, and considering desexing, owners can significantly reduce the risk of accidental breeding and ensure the wellbeing of their dogs and the wider community.
Remember that prevention is always easier than dealing with an unwanted pregnancy. With proper planning and diligence, you can successfully manage your intact dogs and prevent unwanted puppies.

PART XV CODES
A. CODE OF ETHICS FOR MEMBERS
Each Member shall comply with the following Code of Ethics and any Member who fails to do so shall be guilty of an offence against these Rules. Maximum Penalty $5000 (07/22)
As a Member of the South Australian Canine Association:
1. I shall ensure that at all times all dogs under my control are properly and effectively contained by fencing or enclosure, and are properly housed, fed, watered, exercised and given proper Veterinary attention if and when required.
2. I shall not allow any dogs under my care to roam at large, and, when away from home, ensure they are kept fully leashed and under effective control, or otherwise under effective control at all times. (01/16)
3. I shall breed only for the purpose of improving the quality of the breed in line with the breed standard and strive to eliminate hereditary diseases in the breed/s that I produce.
4. I shall strive to have all my breeding stock tested, where tests are available, for hereditary diseases.
5. The health and welfare of a bitch being bred from is of paramount importance and I will adhere to the following minimum standards. (01/20)
(a) No bitch owned by me and/or under my control be mated before she is twelve months of age or older as prescribed in the ANKC Ltd Regulations Part 6. (04/25)
(b) No bitch can be whelped more than twice in any 18-month period without the prior approval of the SACA. (04/25)
(c) No mother/son, father/daughter or brother/sister matings are allowed. Puppies from such matings will be registered on the Limited Register and flagged never to be upgraded. (04/25)
(d) No bitch is allowed more than 5 litters in her lifetime. Puppies from such matings will be registered on the Limited Register and flagged never to be upgraded.(04/25)
(e) No bitch over 8 years of age can be bred from unless at the time of mating there was a current veterinary certificate stating that the bitch is in good health. The veterinary certificate must be presented at the time of registering the litter resulting from this mating. A current veterinarian certificate is defined as a certificate dated within the three months prior to the mating. (04/25)
6. I shall ensure that none of my pure bred dogs are mated to a dog of a different breed, to a cross bred dog, or to an unregistered dog of the same breed, or to a dog of the same breed which is entered on the Limited Register, unless specific permission is given by the SACA. (04/26)
7. I shall not sell or otherwise transfer from my care any puppy under eight weeks of age, thus allowing for vaccination to be given at six weeks of age and thereby allowing for the ten to fourteen days for the vaccine to take effect. Upon the disposal of the dog I shall provide the owner with a current vaccination certificate of that dog issued by a Veterinary Surgeon. Accepted Veterinarian vaccination certificates are C3 12/36 months, C4, C5 or an annual Titre Test accompanied by a Veterinarian letter. (01/19)
8. I shall not knowingly sell or otherwise transfer from my care any dog that is not in good health.
9. I shall ensure that any puppy that is to be exported shall be a minimum of eleven weeks of age and micro-chipped. (01/12)
10. I shall ensure that all persons acquiring dogs from me clearly understand their responsibility for the care and welfare of the animal as defined in Clause 1 and 2 above. I shall not knowingly misrepresent the characteristics of the breed, nor falsely advertise, or mislead any person regarding the performance of any dog. I shall provide to all purchasers of dogs or those placed by me, written details of all dietary and vaccination requirements and responsible dog ownership and/or an appropriate publication relating to such requirements.
11. I shall not sell any dog to commercial dog wholesalers, retail pet dealers, or directly or indirectly to allow a dog to be given as a prize or donation in a contest of any kind or to be auctioned. (01/12)
12. I shall ensure that every dog in every litter I breed will be registered as required in the SACA Rules. (07/22)
13. Where a litter has been found to not comply with this Code of Ethics – 5 all puppies resulting from that litter must be placed on the Limited Register. Once placed on the Limited Register a dog may only be upgraded to the Main Register with the express approval of Council. (08/25)

AGILITY NEWS
Thank you to Retiring Agility Judges
JANE CAULTON
Jane has been training and competing in agility for about 35 yrs. Although much of her agility career and judging was interstate, she has been judging in SA for a number of years and has chosen to retire from the role this year. Jane’s first agility trial was with her GSD Bobby (f) in 1991. Her first judging appointment was in Canberra in 2011 - after doing 2yrs training in Sydney. This was a 2hr drive one way and demonstrated her commitment to the role. Her contribution to agility judging has been extensive. Jane was responsible for introducing the SA agility community to agility seminars run by interstate trainers, which had an enormous impact on many competitors in the state, exposing them to expertise and handling methods and in many cases revolutionising their handling. Jane has been active in other disciplines, and many people would also have met her through herding. The SA agility community thanks Jane for her commitment to the sport of agility and wishes her well in her retirement. Enjoy your beach walks with your dogs Jane and we will no doubt see you around in dog related activities.

JANE LAWRENCE
We celebrate the retirement of Judge Jane Lawrence whose involvement in Agility in South Australia as a competitor and Judge has spanned more than 35 years.
Jane’s first agility dog was a Gordon Setter named Bailey who Jane also achieved an obedience Utility title with.
In the early days of agility, the existing obedience Judges were given the title of Agility Judge so that they could officiate at agility trials. Jane wasn’t an obedience Judge and therefore was the first South Australian female Agility Judge to achieve their licence through the assessment process.
During those early times, Jane remembers using Collapsible tunnels (often a 44-gallon drum with a chute attached (often canvas) which the dogs had to run through. Small, light dogs
often had difficulty passing through the canvas when it was heavy with rainwater. A triple jump was also used. Both items are no longer a part of agility due to how the sport has evolved.
Jane later had another Gordon Setter named Willow, then a Chesapeake Bay Retriever, Abbey, both of whom achieved their AD titles under the very old agility rules.
In 1992 Jane achieved Highest Scoring dog in Agility trials, and Agility Dog of the Year at PDODC which was a thriving agility club at the time.
At the beginning of Agility in South Australia, Jane was an Instructor at PDODC and later held the position of Head Agility Instructor in 1998 & 99, then Joint Head Agility Instructor in 2004 & 05 at Para.
For extra training, Jane also attended MPDOC and GDTC. Around 20 years ago, Jane shifted her focus to training and running Kelpies with her much-loved Clancy, Diesel, Massey, Tayte, Mikki and Madge over that time.
MPDOC eventually became Jane’s ‘home’ when she took on a role as Instructor and from 2010 to 2023, shared the role of Head Agility Instructor with Paul Schroeder at Munno.
Over her journey, for many years Jane has been on the Agility Judges Assessment Panel and has capably mentored trainee Judges. She has judged in Tasmania, NSW (including the Sydney Royal), Victoria and Darwin.
Jane achieved Life Membership at PDODC and MPDOC for her services to each club.
Thank you, Jane.
Jane has always been a highly respected member of the agility community with her cheerful disposition, whether she has been judging, instructing, running her dog, stewarding or just being around her agility companions.
We wish Jane every happiness in her new chapter of life with Terry and Kelpie Madge, as they explore Australia in their caravan and enjoy their new accommodation with a sea change.
