The Skye Terrier originated four centuries ago on the Isle of Skye, Scotland. Bred by farmers as a hardy working Terrier, the breed was an agile worker in rocks, and the breed’s keen sense of smell and flexible body helped it to locate vermin underground as well. The Skye Terrier’s short, sturdy legs were well-suited for digging and the double coat protected it from the wet weather

Chairman's REPORT
Dear Members,
It has been another busy and rewarding period for our organisation, with a number of standout events and positive developments across the canine community.
The recent Advance™ Sydney Royal Dog Show proved to be a major success, once again showcasing the very best of our dogs, exhibitors, and volunteers. We also showcased the Canine Sports Spectacular and the Fast N Furious Twilight Group Spectacular, both wonderful events that highlight the diversity, innovation, and enthusiasm within our community. These events continue to demonstrate the strength of our organisation and the important role we play across the canine sector.
As we look ahead, we are particularly excited to see the return of sheep for the upcoming herding activity season, which has been warmly welcomed by members. Many have reached out to express their enthusiasm, and we look forward to strong participation. We are currently seeing a clear increase in nonconformation activities, particularly SprintDog™ and Scent Work. These disciplines, combined with initiatives, such as the $10 introductory Associate Membership , are contributing to strong growth and helping us broaden engagement across the organisation.
This busy period would not be possible without the dedication of our clubs, committees and volunteers. As we approach one of the most active times of the year, I sincerely thank everyone for their hard work, commitment and ongoing support.
We also recognise an extraordinary milestone - Maree Dodds’ 71 years of membership with DOGS NSW. Her longstanding contribution and dedication are truly inspiring, and we thank her for her exceptional service to the canine community.
Membership renewals for the 2026–2027 period opened on 1 April, and I would like to thank all members who have renewed early. Your continued support is greatly appreciated. As an added incentive, members renewing during April and May will go into the draw to win one of eight $250 fuel vouchers.
The DOGS NSW Strategic Plan is a key focus for the Board which was presented by the Directors in late April 2026. There will be opportunities to further engage with the plan as we deliver the strategies through our key organisation committees and roadmap.
The Board is now focused on progressing the “Roadmap to Success” with emphasis on timelines and the delivery of key operational priorities. At the same time, we continue to strengthen our governance framework and ensure our committees are aligned with the strategic direction of the organisation. Expressions of Interest have been called for the Governance Framework Working Party, led by Director Hoffman, and it is encouraging to see members stepping forward to support this important initiative.
In addition, the Board is implementing an annual calendar to ensure Directors are present at key events throughout the year, strengthening connection and visibility across the organisation.
Finally, as we continue to grow and evolve, it is important that we treat one another with respect, understanding and compassion, maintaining the positive culture that underpins our success.
Thank you to all members for your ongoing support and contribution.

Dear Members,
Editor's
MESSAGE
In this edition, we proudly recognise and celebrate Maree Dodds on the remarkable milestone of 71 years of membership with DOGS NSW. Now 89 years of age, Maree continues to inspire, generously mentoring newcomers and sharing her extensive knowledge of purebred dogs. Congratulations, Maree. I encourage you to read more about her outstanding contribution on page 7.
Our coverage of the Fast N Furious Twilight Spectacular begins on page 8. Held on Friday, 13 March, the four shows embraced a vibrant neon 80's theme, with strong entries across all events. The continued success of the innovative ‘Fast N Furious’ format highlights its popularity among exhibitors, offering a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere for all involved.
The Canine Sports Spectacular returned for its second year, once again attracting both members and the general public to participate in a wide range of canine activities. While Retrieving and Herding were not featured this year, the remaining sports drew enthusiastic crowds, with participants eagerly queuing to take part. Coverage of this lively event, along with a dedicated SprintDog™ feature, begins on page 23.
Looking ahead, our next major event, Dogs on Show, will be held on Saturday, 13 June, and hosted by the DOGS NSW Events Committee. The day promises something for everyone, including two conformation shows alongside a variety of canine sports, demonstrations and a Pageant of Breeds.
Also on this day, we will host an informative talk in the Library presented by behaviourist Sarah Rutten. Bookings can be made by contacting DOGS NSW or via the website under Upcoming Events.
This month’s breed spotlight turns to the Skye Terrier. An elegant yet robust breed, the Skye Terrier originated on Scotland’s Isle of Skye as a skilled vermin hunter. Distinctive in appearance, it is long, low, and level, with a flat-lying coat and characteristic feathered ears that stand erect. Despite its refined appearance, the breed is hardy and intelligent. Typically calmer than many terriers, the Skye Terrier is strong-willed, yet eager to please, making it a rewarding and capable companion when properly trained. To read more about the Skye Terrier please turn to page 18. Finally, the winners of March's competition to win a copy of Sarah Rutten's book, 'The Canine Perspective' were Vicki Case, Leilani Lynch, Leanne Campain and Paul Hoffman.
If you think you have been a continuous member with DOGS NSW for 25 years or more, please call DOGS NSW® on 9834 3022 or email: info@dogsnsw.org.au
For those members who have reached their 60, 50 and 25 year membership status, we would like to acknowledge these members and thank them for their continuing support of our organisation with a badge and certificate. Please note the recipients below.

71 Years in the Dog World!
Celebrating Maree Dodds and a Lifetime with DOGS NSW
For most people, a hobby might last a few years. For Maree Dodds, a passion for dogs has spanned more than seven decades.
In 2026, Maree celebrated an extraordinary milestone: 71 years as a member of DOGS NSW, having first joined the organisation in 1955. At nearly 89 years of age, she remains deeply connected to the dog world, attending shows, mentoring newcomers and continuing to share the wisdom she has gained from a lifetime dedicated to purebred dogs.
Her story is not just one of longevity, it is a story about mentorship, learning, preserving breed standards and ensuring the future of the pedigree dog community.
A Childhood Shaped by Dogs
Maree’s journey with dogs began long before she formally joined DOGS NSW. Her father had dogs and was involved in showing them, and Maree quickly became immersed in the world of breeding and exhibition. Growing up, she watched closely as experienced breeders worked with their dogs, learning through observation and hands-on involvement.
One of her earliest influences was Gladdy Osborne of Glendallo Kennels, who became Maree’s mentor. Gladdy bred Collie (Rough) and was instrumental in introducing Maree to the discipline, knowledge and attention to detail required in the dog world.
“I had a wonderful mentor,” Maree recalls. “She would make me sit and watch and then ask me what I liked about a dog and why.”
That early mentorship would shape Maree’s approach for decades to come.
Travelling Across Sydney to Show Dogs
As a young exhibitor, getting to dog shows was far from simple. Maree remembers travelling across Sydney using public transport to attend shows.
“I would get the tram from Bondi to Central, then the train out to Blacktown,” she says.
Those long journeys marked the beginning of her showing career, one that would eventually see her become known as a skilled handler and respected breeder.
A Life in the Show Ring
Throughout her life in dogs, Maree has worked with a wide variety of breeds. She spent most of her career as a handler , working with dogs including:
● Pomeranians
● Pekingese
● Japanese Spitz
● German Shepherd Dogs
● Shetland Sheepdogs
She also recalls being involved with one of the first Japanese Spitz in New South Wales, a notable moment in the development of the breed in Australia.
However, one breed captured her heart.
The Love of Pomeranians
Maree’s lifelong love of Pomeranians can be traced back to a family story after the second World War.

13 MARCH 2026
DOGS NSW was proud to present the Fast N Furious (FNF) Twilight Group Spectacular Shows on Friday, 13 March 2026. The event proved to be a wonderful night of fun, celebration and innovation for our organisation and our sport.
The evening was conducted in a relaxed and energetic atmosphere, with music, colour and a strong sense of community throughout the complex. This new and innovative event model was a great success and demonstrated how creative thinking and new event formats can support the future direction of our sport while complementing our existing show program.
Events like this provide additional opportunities for members and exhibitors and help ensure our sport continues to evolve, remain engaging and attract participation into the future.
Feedback from exhibitors, officials and attendees has been very positive, and DOGS NSW looks forward to delivering similar events for our members in the future. The evening was very much about enjoying our sport, trying something new and thinking positively about the future of showing.
It was a privilege to have our judges and stewards involved in this inaugural event and to be part of a piece of DOGS NSW history. Their leadership, professionalism and willingness to support this innovation trial played a significant role in the success of the evening. Judges (pictured above, left to right) included: Wayne Lewis (NSW), Rebecca Preece-Pickering (NSW), Kim Tresidder (NSW), Vickie Harris (NSW), Rebecca Rafton (NSW), Nellie Abela (NSW) and Peta Weber (NSW). At the back: Nathan Jennings (ACT), Darryl Chapman (NSW), David Dawes (ACT) and Addam Barter (NSW). The front row is Laurie Wheeler (NSW), Ted Pickering (NSW), Annette Bowe (NSW), Sue Bownds (NSW) and Samantha King (NSW).

Images: (pictured left) Our Stewards at the Fast N Furious Group Spectacular. Opposite page (top): The Fast N Furious Committee (left to right): Christina Rafton, Ross Sinclair, Judith Woolley, Lorne Hyde, Peter King-Brown.
Interest has already been shown by other states who are keen to meet with DOGS NSW following the completion and evaluation of this Group Spectacular format.
On the night, 28 Groups were delivered across Groups 1, 2, 3 and 4, along with 28 Puppy in Group competitions for our exhibitors. The event ran to schedule, and exhibitors were excellent in working with officials to maintain timing throughout the evening. Our judges and stewards did an outstanding job managing the tempo of the night and ensuring smooth transitions between shows.
Adding to the atmosphere, the evening featured 1980s music, bright lights, glow sticks and plenty of colourful 80s-themed outfits, creating a fun and memorable experience for everyone involved. There was strong engagement on social media throughout the night, with many photos and videos shared and later featured in the DOGS NSW highlights reel.
DOGS NSW extends sincere thanks to the hardworking organising committee, our wonderful judges, stewards and volunteers, and our generous sponsor Royal Canin for their support of this event. Special thanks to Director Christina Rafton, Director Tracy Hofman, Director Vickie Harris and Director Neil Curwen for their support on the night. We also acknowledge the tireless work of DOGS NSW President Ross Sinclair, Peter King-Brown, Judith Woolley and Lorne Hyde, who worked throughout the evening to ensure the event ran smoothly and on time.
Innovation is a cornerstone of continuing to improve and grow our sports, and nights like this demonstrate what can be achieved when we work together with a shared vision. Events such as the FNF Twilight Group Spectacular help keep our sport vibrant, progressive and enjoyable for our members.
As with all innovation projects, DOGS NSW conducted a Survey evaluation for participants to complete so that a thorough review of the event could be undertaken and improvements considered for future events.
Overall, the FNF Twilight Group Spectacular Shows were a successful and exciting initiative for DOGS NSW, and we look forward to building on this success in the future.

Distinguished Service and Life Membership Awards
These awards exist to recognise the valuable contribution of individuals to the current and future existence of the organisation. In particular, the Awards System, described below, is intended to recognise a wide range of factors, more than simply by being a long-term Member. It also seeks to create awards so that significant contributions to DOGS NSW may be recognised appropriately.
The two Awards available to Members are:
1. Distinguished Service Award
2. Honorary Life Membership
The award of Life Membership is the highest honour that DOGS NSW can bestow on an individual. It is conferred on those who have made an exceptional contribution to the existence and advancement of the organisation. The aim is to make life membership hard to obtain so that it is respected by members and valued by recipients
PROCEDURE
Members wishing to nominate a fellow Member for either Award may apply to the Office for the appropriate Nomination Form.
Each form must be completed by two Members, in good standing and lodged with the Office prior to the advertised closing date for nominations.
All nominations are to be treated in the strictest confidence.
Nominations will be referred to the Honours Working Party for due consideration to be followed by the Working Party’s recommendations to the Board of Directors.
AWARD CRITERIA
1. Distinguished Service Award
The Nominee is to be a continuous financial member of DOGS NSW for a minimum period of 15 years.
The Nominee must have served the dog world in an effective and meaningful way; such as Member of an Affiliate, a Committee Member, a Steward, an Event Organiser and any of the other many contributing roles which require a considerable degree of personal endeavour, involvement and dedication.
2. Honorary Life Membership
The Nominee is to be a continuous financial member of DOGS NSW for a minimum period of 25 years.
The Nominee must have demonstrated significant, sustained and high quality service enhancing the reputation and future of the overall organisation particularly to the administration, development and promotion of the canine world.
Exceptional Criteria
Should a member lack the membership precondition, but it can be demonstrated that the member has provided outstanding and meritorious services to DOGS NSW, then a nomination may well be warranted.
NOTE:
The members of the Honours Working Party are of the view that should a nomination not be successful, further nominations for that nominee should not be considered for a minimum period of three years.
If you require either a Distinguished Service Award or a Honorary Life Membership nomination form please email info@ dogsnsw.org.au
Please forward the completed nomination form, marked to the attention of: The Company Secretary DOGS NSW by either:
Post: PO Box 632, ST MARYS, NSW 2790; Email: info@dogsnsw.org.au;

Skye Terrier
History
The Skye Terrier originated approximately four centuries ago on the remote Isle of Skye, Scotland. It was bred by farmers as a hardy Terrier, with immense courage and loyalty. The breed would follow the scent of vermin, such as fox and badger. An agile worker in rocks, the breed’s keen sense of smell and flexible body helped it to locate vermin underground as well. The Skye Terrier’s short, sturdy legs were well suited for digging, and the profuse, double coat protected it from the wet weather.
Appearance
A stylish and elegant dog, best described as long, low and level, the Skye Terrier is a strong dog with a profuse coat that falls straight down to the ground. When seen in profile, these elegant but substantial terriers are twice as long as they are high. Skye Terriers are 25cm tall and approximately 1.4m long, from nose to end of tail, and weighs approximately 12-15kg.
The breed can have either drop or prick ears. Originally, the drop-eared variety was favoured for farm work, but later, in the nineteenth century, the erect eared variety became more popular as a pet and show dog, partly as a result of Queen Victoria’s fondness for the breed. The erect 'bat-like' ears are large, with beautiful black feathering that frames the face. The Skye Terrier is bred in a range of colours including cream, silver, grey and black. The ears and nose on all colours must be black.
Temperament
The breed is affectionate and willing to please, and has the temperament of a typical working Terrier; it is fearless and very loyal to its master. It is a ‘one man’ dog and can be distrustful of strangers, but never vicious. The breed enjoys being part of the family.
The Skye Terrier excels at many different disciplines including, but not limited to Obedience, Earthdog, Agility and Conformation. The breed enjoys learning new things and is keen to make things a game.
'The Skye is a very intelligent but strong-willed breed, calmer than many of the terrier breeds. They are amenable to training, provided it is consistent and done in a positive manner. They are sensitive to correction and will withdraw from harsh or negative training methods. Like all terriers, they can be stubborn, but they enjoy interaction with their humans and are eager to please. The Skye is reserved by nature and should be well socialised from a very young age to ensure a happy and outgoing personality. For those who understand the breed's temperament and raise the dog with love and proper training and socialisation, there is no more delightful companion.' 1.
Health
The Skye Terrier is a reasonably hardy Terrier with a lifespan usually in excess of 10 years. There are some health issues that can affect the breed including early closure of growth plates in the front legs, and Renal Dysplasia has been noted in the breed, although not in large numbers. Screening programs currently being used can eradicate this in the breed.
Because of their long and low structure, Skye Terriers can experience disk injuries, and Skye puppies should never be allowed to go up and down stairs excessively or jump onto hard surfaces from any height.
Grooming
Regular grooming for the Skye Terrier in full coat requires a good brush through a couple of times a week. Always pay attention to behind the ears and the legs, as the coat can become knotted in these areas. Do not scrub the coat during shampooing, as that can cause it to matt.
Bathing and nail clipping should be undertaken regularly, and ears cleaned and checked. The hair under the pads can be trimmed as required. The breed will usually shed the softer undercoat once or twice per year.
Exercise & Suitability
The Skye Terrier is a multipurpose Terrier with an inquisitive nature. The breed makes a loyal family dog that requires a reasonable amount of exercise per day. It does enjoy being part of the family and doesn’t like being left out of activities. The breed can benefit from basic Obedience training as it is a strong-willed dog. The Skye Terrier is a wonderful companion and usually gets along well with other dogs.
'The Skye Terrier has minimal exercise needs and will usually be content with whatever level of activity is comfortable for his owner. Even a short daily outing will benefit him both physically and mentally. Skyes enjoy play sessions and participating in canine sports with their people, and the breed can be found competing in dog shows, agility, obedience, and earthdog events.' 2.

71 Years in the Dog World!
Celebrating Maree Dodds and a Lifetime with DOGS NSW
Continued from page 7....
The Love of Pomeranians
Her grandfather returned from the war and brought home a small dog. Like many returned soldiers, he affectionately called the dog “Digger”, a nickname used among wartime mates.
As a child, Maree would visit and take the dog for walks. “I stayed with them from that point,” she says. At the time, Pomeranians were larger than many seen today, and Maree developed a deep appreciation for the breed’s character, expression and history.
Over time, she would go on to breed and show Pomeranians herself, while also keeping dogs in obedience and working with Shetland Sheepdogs
Building a Successful Kennel
In the early days of her career, Maree established Arderne Kennels, beginning in 1955. Through her breeding program she produced Supreme Champions, continuing to develop and refine her lines with great care. However, life has a way of shifting priorities.
Despite stepping back from active breeding, she has never truly left the dog world, remaining involved in the community and continuing to attend shows.
Still Ringside at 89
Even now, Maree remains an active presence in the show community. Last year she attended the Sydney Royal Dog Show, not as an exhibitor but as an observer.
“I like to go around and see what is in the ring,” she says. For Maree, watching dogs compete is still an opportunity to learn. “You can’t sit back, you have to see what is around.”
That curiosity and willingness to keep learning is something she encourages in new exhibitors.
Advice
for the Next Generation
Maree began showing dogs at 18 years of age , and when asked what advice she would give newcomers today, her answer is clear:
"Find a mentor."
“Most people just look, but you should have a mentor,” she says.
Her own mentor taught her to observe carefully. She would be asked to watch dogs in the ring and explain what she liked and more importantly, why.
“It makes you think about the breed and the standard.”
Maree also recommends that newcomers arrive early at dog shows and set up near experienced exhibitors.
“Sit near people with good dogs so you can see how they do things.”
This type of informal learning, she believes, is invaluable.
Giving Back Through Mentorship
Mentorship remains an important part of Maree’s life. Today she mentors Liz Nelson , attending shows with her and continuing the tradition of guidance that once shaped her own career.
Mentoring, Maree believes, is about encouraging people to think.
71 Years in the Dog World!
Celebrating Maree Dodds and a Lifetime with DOGS NSW
Giving Back Through Mentorship
“You ask them what they like and why they like it,” she explains. “It helps them understand the breed properly.”
A good mentor should also help newcomers learn the breed standard and recognise the differences between correct type and fashionable trends.
Promoting Purebred Dogs to the Public
One of Maree’s greatest concerns is the decline in visibility of purebred dogs in everyday life .
“People don’t see them anymore,” she says. Because fewer pedigree dogs are out and about in the community, many people simply aren’t aware of them or understand their breeds.
Her advice is simple: Take your dogs out.
Let people meet them, talk about them and learn about the breed. These everyday conversations, she believes, play an important role in promoting pedigree dogs.
A Lifetime Contribution to the Dog Community
Across her decades in the dog world, Maree has done far more than breed and show dogs. She has:
● Stewarded at dog shows for around 15 years
● Helped run many shows
● Mentored new exhibitors
● Promoted purebred dogs within the community
Through all of this, she has remained committed to one central idea: Always strive to improve the breed.
“Only breed a dog if it improves what you already have,” she says.
That philosophy has guided generations of responsible breeders and continues to shape the future of the dog world.
Celebrating 71 Years of Dedication
Few people can claim seven decades of involvement in the dog world. Maree Dodds’ 71 years of membership with DOGS NSW is a remarkable testament to her dedication, passion and lifelong love of dogs.
From travelling across Sydney by tram and train to attend her first shows, to mentoring new exhibitors today, Maree’s journey reflects the rich history and community spirit of the purebred dog world.
Her story reminds us that the future of pedigree dogs depends on knowledge, mentorship, respect for breed standards and a willingness to share our dogs with the wider community.
After more than 70 years, Maree Dodds continues to embody all of these values.

SprintDog™
7 March 2026
Steals the Show at DOGS NSW Canine Sports Spectacular
WORDS: KATH PURKIS
This is the sport taking the Australian canine world by storm, and nowhere was it more electrifying than at the DOGS NSW Canine Sports Spectacular.
One of the day's most heartwarming highlights was the SprintDog™ fun runs , which saw a remarkable 100 dogs take to the track across the course of the event. Open to both DOGS NSW members and members of the public, the fun runs gave every dog, regardless of breed, size, pedigree or experience, the chance to feel the wind in their ears and their paws on the track.
And what a variety turned up. Alongside seasoned competitors came family pets experiencing their first sprint, discovering a hidden talent for speed, and tentative first-timers who, once released, ran like they'd been born for it. There were many happy dogs and owners, doing what dogs do best, running with pure joy, and owners cheering them on as though they'd just won gold. It was, in many ways, the perfect embodiment of what SprintDog™ is all about: not just a sport, but an invitation for every dog to shine and have fun.
Now in its second year, the family-friendly event is open to all members of the public and their dogs, offering exciting demonstrations, hands-on fun, expert advice, food and drinks, and a quiet zone to relax. Doors opened at 10.00am and the action ran through to 4.00pm.
SprintDog™was a crowd favourite, drawing cheers and more than a few happy faces from the sidelines.
The sport's title pathway gives competitors something to work towards long after their first ribbon. Titles progress from SprintDog™ Novice through SprintDog™, Advanced, Excellent, Master and ultimately SprintDog™ Champion. We had our 2nd NSW SprintDogTM Champion obtain their title at our trial. Congratulations to Lisa Heeley and her Brittany Spaniel “Lollipop”, who is the first of her breed in Australia to become a SprintDog TM Champion.
The track team running the SprintDog™ Trial and Try-outs was made up of volunteers from Sydney, Newcastle, Albury, ACT and beyond. A big thank you to the track team who made the event and weekend of trials possible for the community.

Ancient ‘spaghetti’ in dogs’ hearts reveals surprising origins of heartworm
Global DNA study rewrites the evolutionary history of canine disease
Research led by the University of Sydney is reshaping scientific understanding of one of the world’s most widespread canine parasites, suggesting heartworm disease has a far deeper and more complex evolutionary history than previously believed, including a possible ancient origin of Australian heartworms linked to dingoes.
In a global genome-wide study of canine heartworm parasites, researchers analysed more than 100 heartworm genomes collected from dogs and wild canids across multiple continents. The findings challenge the long-held assumption that heartworm spread largely through recent, human-mediated movement of domestic dogs. Instead, the study points to a new evolutionary paradigm, where ancient canid hosts, such as wolves and dingoes, played a pivotal role in shaping the global distribution of heartworms over tens of thousands of years. The paper is published in Communications Biology.
Heartworm disease, caused by the parasite Dirofilaria immitis, is transmitted by mosquitoes and can be fatal for dogs if left untreated. Adult worms, often described as looking like strands of spaghetti, can grow up to 30 centimetres long and live in the blood vessels of the heart and lungs. One of the most intriguing findings relates to Australia. Genetic signatures in Australian heartworms suggest they may share ancestry with parasites from Asia. This raises the possibility that heartworm could have arrived in Australia with the continent’s first dingoes, which are believed to have migrated from Asia thousands of years ago. However, the researchers caution that the evidence is not conclusive. An alternative explanation, that heartworm was introduced to Australia more recently, following European colonisation, cannot yet be ruled out.
“While our data suggest an ancient link between Australian and Asian heartworms, the sample size means we need to be careful about drawing firm conclusions,” said senior author Professor Jan Slapeta from the University of Sydney School of Veterinary Science. “What we can say with confidence is that heartworm evolution is far older and more complex than a simple story of parasites hitchhiking with modern dogs.”
The international team used whole-genome sequencing to compare heartworms from different regions, allowing them to reconstruct population histories and track how parasites diverged over time. By examining patterns across continents, the researchers identified distinct regional heartworm populations, shaped by the movements and isolation of ancient canids during ice ages and interglacial periods. Lead author, Dr Rosemonde Power, who completed her PhD at the University of Sydney and is now based at Stockholm University, said the findings overturn long-standing assumptions in parasitology. “For decades, we assumed heartworms were spread mainly through recent human activity,” Dr Power said. “What we’re seeing instead is evidence of deep co-evolution between heartworms and their canine hosts, even before humans were part of the picture.”
The research also has important implications for animal health today, particularly as drug resistance to heartworm treatments emerges in parts of the world.
“Understanding where heartworms come from and how different populations are related helps us respond more effectively to disease and drug resistance,” Professor Slapeta said. “Heartworms are not the same everywhere, and local history matters.”
The authors emphasise that while the study analysed over 100 genomes, further sampling, particularly from under-represented regions, will be needed to refine timelines and test competing hypotheses, including the origins of heartworm in Australia. Still, the study marks a significant step forward in understanding the ancient, global journey of one of dogs’ most dangerous parasites – and the long evolutionary history hidden within that unsettling spaghetti in a dog’s heart.

Names and addresses of contributors may be withheld from publication on request but must be supplied. While every effort is made to ensure that all material is reproduced correctly, DOGS NSW accept no responsibility for any error.
NOTICE TO ADVERTISERS
The Competition and Consumer Act came into force
on 19 April 2011. Certain provisions of the Act relating to consumer protection place a heavy burden upon advertisers, advertising agents and the publishers of advertisements. In view of the obvious impossibility of our ensuring that advertisements submitted for publication comply with the Act, advertisers themselves need to ensure that the provisions of the Act are strictly complied with. Advertisers are warned that it is their responsibility to be able to substantiate any statements or claims made in advertisements. In cases of doubt, advertisers are asked to seek legal advice before submitting advertising material.
DISPUTES
From time to time, members refer to DOGS NSW matters in which it is not appropriate for our organisation to become involved. For example, disputes between members in relation to the sale of dogs. These are usually private matters to be determined by the contractual agreements between parties. Disputes on such matters should be resolved by the courts and not by DOGS NSW.
Members are requested to refrain from referring such matters to DOGS NSW. They are issues of a private or domestic nature and should properly be resolved by the courts or the Department of Fair Trading.
