Chairman's REPORT
Dear Members,
It continues to be both an honour and a privilege to serve as President of DOGS NSW and to work alongside the passionate members, volunteers, clubs and exhibitors who contribute so much to our organisation and the wider dog community across New South Wales. The Board remains focused on strengthening DOGS NSW, supporting members and ensuring a positive and sustainable future for purebred dogs, dog sports and our broader community.
A key priority for the Board is the ongoing implementation of the DOGS NSW Strategic Plan Central to this process is the use of real membership data to guide future decision-making and help the organisation continue to evolve in response to member needs. Encouragingly, the strategic planning process has already generated strong engagement from members, many of whom have offered ideas, support and assistance. This response highlights the passion members have for the future of DOGS NSW.
An important focus moving forward is attracting younger members and supporting the next generation of exhibitors, competitors, volunteers and officials.
The recent online Member Forum and Strategic Plan launch demonstrated strong member interest, receiving overwhelmingly positive feedback from across the state. Members appreciated the increased transparency, accessibility and opportunity to engage directly with the Board from their own homes. As a result, future online forums and Q&A sessions will continue to play an important role in improving communication and engagement with members throughout NSW.
DOGS NSW also continues to see strong growth and enthusiasm across its sporting disciplines. In the coming months, a Dog Sports Planning process will be undertaken to develop long-term strategies aimed at supporting continued growth. Areas of focus will include volunteer development, judge and steward pathways, infrastructure planning, increased participation opportunities and improving regional access to facilities and equipment.
Particular excitement continues around the growth of SprintDog, Earthdog and scent work activities, which are attracting strong participation and introducing many new people to the organisation. To support this momentum, the Board has committed further investment into SprintDog infrastructure and development across regional NSW. This initiative aims to provide members in regional and remote areas with greater access to facilities and opportunities without the need for extensive travel to metropolitan centres. Funding will support SprintDog development and infrastructure projects across the state over the next two years.
The Board is also continuing to modernise governance and improve operational efficiency. Initiatives include enhanced cybersecurity and document access, improved communication systems, the exploration of Microsoft Teams for collaboration and streamlined meeting structures through the introduction of consent agendas. These changes are designed to improve transparency, efficiency and long-term governance.
Mentoring and youth engagement remain key priorities. Planned initiatives include structured mentoring opportunities for new members, “buddy”-style support systems, a Youth Forum and pathways for future volunteers and leaders. The Board recognises that encouraging and supporting new participants is critical to the longterm sustainability of the organisation.
DOGS NSW representatives also continue to review proposed legislative changes affecting dog ownership and breeding in NSW. This important work is being undertaken by volunteers and members of the Media and Government Legislation Committee, who continue to advocate on behalf of members and provide updates as developments occur.
As DOGS NSW moves forward, collaboration, teamwork and constructive engagement will remain essential in building a strong and successful future for the organisation and its members.
The Honourable Margaret Beazley AO KC, Governor of New South Wales
Dear Members,
Editor's MESSAGE
It's not often we receive articles from Dogs West, however, they appear to be leading the way in the introduction of a new dog sport to Australia - 'Bale Seek.' For the past three years, the sport has been promoted unofficially in Western Australia through practice days led by Brigitte Walkey, a former Judge in the related North American discipline of Barn Hunt. Dogs Australia has now appointed Ms Walkey as Chair of the National Bale Seek Working Party, a role that will help unify and standardise the sport across the country. Interest in Bale Seek continues to grow nationally and the article is a terrific introduction to it and features on page 24.
As our spotlight breed for June is the Irish Setter, we have a special article featuring Irish Setter siblings, Artemis and Jasper, who are dedicated therapy dogs. Artemis works directly with a clinical psychologist in Rockhampton, providing direct care to adults with disabilities. Jasper is very calm and patient, with a love of children, and has been placed on a program for very vulnerable children. Quite a testament for this unique and beautiful breed. The article appears on page 22.
We acknowledge, with sadness, the passing of Peter Hosie on 12 January 2026. A highly respected Obedience Judge and trainer, Peter was well known in NSW and Canberra regions. He received a Distinguished Service Award in 2014 in recognition of his long and outstanding service to the Obedience disciplines in NSW as a Mentor, Judge and Trial Manager and he will be sorely missed by many. His vale appears on page 8.
Coverage of the Complex Fundraising Working Party AM and PM Championship Shows on 27 April appears on page 12.
Author and photographer, Kerry Martin, travels Australia and has offered a wonderful article entitled 'Snowy Paws & Happy Tails,' a Pet Parent's Guide to taking your Dog to the Snow. Whether it be a first time introduction for your dog, what to take, or where and when to go, this article gives some great tips along with beautiful photography of dogs enjoying the snow (particularly the first one). The article is featured on page 26.
The winners of April's 'Wilding Road' Competition were Russell Thurling, Kath Drew, Denise Reynolds, Vivienne Gail Jones, Beatriz Insausti and Janet Power.

VALE:
Peter Hosie
21 May 1941~13 January 2026
Peter was very well known in the dog world, in particular within the New South Wales and Canberra regions.
Peter initially joined the ACT Companion Dog Club in 1971 where he progressed through to becoming a fully qualified Instructor with the ACT Canine Association in 1972. This allowed him to instruct all Obedience classes up to Utility Dog level, (the highest classification at the time). In 1974, Peter passed the ANKC Judge’s examination at Companion Dog level (Novice Class) progressing through to Companion Dog Excellent in 1975 and Utility in 1976. He became a fully qualified Obedience Judge, capable of officiating anywhere in Australia and by invitation, the world. Peter gained his Tracking Judge licence in 1976 followed by his Agility licence in 1989. Peter officiated at Obedience, Tracking and Agility trials throughout NSW, as well as, having the honour of being the sole Obedience Judge at the Royal Melbourne Show. Peter also judged in Darwin, Alice Springs, South Australia Obedience Titles, DOGS NSW Spring Fair a few times, and the ACT Royal on a number of occasions. Peter assisted in the training of ACT Obedience and Tracking Judges, to mention a few, Terry Griffin and Sid Schuck, well known identities in the trialling community.
In 1997, Peter joined the Eurobodalla Club and became actively involved in dog obedience in the Eurobodalla area. During his time at our club, he acted in many positions: Chief Instructor, President, secretary and demonstration team leader. In 2003, we awarded Peter with Life Membership and the following year, his wife Shirley was presented with Life Membership for their outstanding service and commitment to our club. Peter happily shared this knowledge with everyone he met; mentoring several people throughout the NSW and ACT region, ensuring not only our Eurobodalla Canine Club, but numerous other clubs on the NSW South Coast and Canberra region had qualified instructors to assist members who joined their clubs in the basics of dog training through to official dog trialling.
Peter, along with his wife Shirley, helped to establish obedience trials for the Bega Valley Kennel Club, where he was President for 10 years, before retiring and handing the reins to Charlie and Liz Giles.
On the 30 August 2014, Peter was presented with the DOGS NSW Distinguished Service Award in recognition of his long and outstanding service to the Obedience disciplines in NSW as a Mentor, Judge and Trial Manager.
In addition, Peter designed and conducted many obedience courses and mock trials, which in turn, assisted in building a strong number of instructors for dog clubs throughout the NSW South Coast region. This also led to many handlers becoming obedience judges. His legacy has continued with several handlers competing to the highest of standards, not only in the obedience ring, but also in rally, tracking and agility, to name a few.
Peter was a great advocate in teaching children ‘dog stranger danger’ and along with a few instructors and their dogs; they went to every primary school in our area to make them aware of how to approach dogs safely. He encouraged community interaction, which saw many club members and their dogs attend school fetes and open days doing teamwork demonstration in obedience. Additionally, Peter volunteered at the Eurobodalla Animal Welfare League Branch and assisted with their open days.
Peter has trained and also shown Cocker Spaniels, Shetland Sheepdogs, Miniature Poodle, Schipperke, and a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. His most embarrassing moment in the obedience ring was when he was trialling his three legged Shetland Sheepdog named ‘Pancho’ in the novice ring and ‘Pancho’ felt the need to pee. At the time, fouling in the ring was a 10 point deduction and by the time he finished the ‘heel free’ exercise, he had used up the total 200 points. Needless to say, not a good trialling day!!
During his 50 plus years of service to the dog obedience world, Peter has guided thousands of handlers and their canine companions into becoming good ‘citizens’, a perfect result for everyone. His legacy will live on in the way in which we train our dogs and in turn, we pass on that knowledge to future handlers and their dogs.
Sadly this is the end of an era. Both Peter and Shirley will be long remembered by everyone blessed enough to have met them in the ‘dog world’ and we are quite confident that they are running a successful obedience club in heaven.
We extend our sincere condolences to his family. Peter's legacy lives on, and we remember him fondly every time we train our dogs.

Breaking Ground with Stores forPaws Promotions
For the last three years, the DOGS NSW Grounds Development Committee and our team of wonderful volunteers take immense pride in participating in the Bunnings Stores for Paws events, promoting the activities of DOGS NSW and our pure-bred dogs.
We extended our commitment over three stores this year, plus agreed to run the sausage sizzles. So, we hit the tongs at Castle Hill, selling over 870 snags and were run off our feet. Huge thank you to Liz Wells, Marilyn Parker, Bel Beves, Rebecca Braid, Aaron Brooker, our little champion Henry Brooker (Aaron's son), and my husband John for helping with this one.
Meanwhile at Bunnings Penrith , we were able to assist the Pomeranian Club of NSW with a double sizzle, making an excellent profit and funds towards their next shows.
"So, all they do is cook sausages, I hear!" Well, we also ran in-store promotions with our dogs.
and
At Bunnings McGraths Hill, Jeanie Montford took her Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, ‘Dido’ and ‘Dotty’, and Margot Stuckey her Golden Retriever ‘Lacie’. Pictured on page 11.
At Bunnings Castle Hill, we had Mara Bontempo-Ross and Rebecca Braid with Mara’s beautiful Standard Poodles 'Coco' and 'Prince,'plus Louise Patterson and Colleen Bourke with their Golden Retrievers.
We did have Stephen Oliver and friends ready for Bunnings Penrith but had to cancel this time around due to illness.
Bunnings is very community focused and extremely pet friendly. Our dogs received lots of pats, as well as loads of attention and photos from the crowds. Our volunteers and Committee members spoke about our activities, gave out DOGS NSW information brochures, as well as the promotional flyers for the up-and-coming Dogs on Show Open Day event on 13 June 2026. All of this created plenty of interest with the attending public.
I could not be prouder of what we do. Everyone attended with a smile, lots of enthusiasm, and reported back at the end of the day exhausted, but still with smiles on their faces. I’m so pleased with what we achieved over this weekend.
Teamwork makes the dream work.

CHAMPIONSHIP SHOWS
When the government announced an additional public holiday on Monday, 27 April in 2026, the Show Committee acted swiftly to seize this unique opportunity in the calendar.
As a result, Dianne Wright organised two extra shows, both of which attracted more than 500 entries each. These events proved highly successful, generating essential funds for our grounds and supporting our vendors. Exhibitors enthusiastically embraced the chance, making the most of the occasion and contributing to a vibrant, well-attended series of shows.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to the office staff, grounds team, judges, stewards and vendors for their collective efforts in making this event a reality. Their collaboration and dedication truly brought the occasion to life. Thank you to Barbara Killworth for photographing both shows.
Outstanding effort from Dianne and her team! Their commitment and hard work truly made a remarkable impact on the event’s success.

Irish Setter
History
Derived from a variety of spaniels, setters and pointers, the Irish Setter was initially a red and white dog, with shorter legs than today’s breed. In the 19th Century, following intensive selective breeding efforts, the lusterous, pure chestnut-red setter emerged, to win both prizes and hearts.
Red and white dogs of Setter appearance were present in Ireland in the early 1800s, but by the late 1800s, entirely red dogs became more popular. The earliest English dog shows, commencing in 1859, included both coloured varieties of widely differing appearances. The first standard was adopted in 1882 and has remained largely unchanged since then.
Temperament
In the 1970s, Irish Setters gained the reputation for being stupid which was, and still is, unjustified. After a rapid increase in numbers, they suffered from the attention of ill-informed people who raised litters without adequate understanding of the breed’s requirements.
Most current breeders raise puppies with the correct care and attention and produce well-balanced dogs. The Dogs Australia standard describes Irish Setters as ‘demonstrably affectionate’.
An intelligent dog, they are quick learners and excel at obedience training. They are high spirited and will give undying loyalty and love.
Appearance
The Irish Setter has been described as the world’s most beautiful dog, with its long, glossy, deep red coat. They should have an intelligent and friendly appearance and be active and substantial, yet elegant in outline.
Height: Dogs 68.5cm and Bitches 63.5cm (measurements being made at the withers).
Weight: Dogs 33-35 kg and Bitches 27-30 kg.
The Irish Setter is a spirited and graceful gundog, admired for its speed and striking red coat.
Renowned as an exceptional family companion, it combines a gentle nature with an affectionate, endearing personality.

Suitability
Irish Setters have an excellent sense of smell, are extremely active and curious, and learn very quickly. These characteristics mean they’re not suited to everyone. It is recommended that puppies are shaped and trained from a very early age. The most successful placements are with people who have owned dogs before, or at least owned horses or goats, and know how to train and manage animals.
Irish Setters should be brushed and combed regularly, which keeps their coat in condition, free from knots, etc. Always pay particular attention to under the stomach and between the legs, so that knots don’t cause the dogs any discomfort. Also, trim the hair between the toes, as the hair can also knot and cause discomfort.
It is not necessary to bath the dog every week, but when you do, use a quality pet soap, shampoo and conditioner and remember to rinse out all soap, shampoo and/or conditioner.
Irish Setters need a good-sized garden or yard (fully fenced and escape-proof). Regular walks are a very important aspect of ownership.
The Irish Setter is very friendly, will let you know if strangers are about, and will play with children for hours.
As with all Setters, if brought up with other animals, Irish Setters get along very well with them. Any new pet should be introduced slowly under strict supervision. The new pet could be crated and the Setter be allowed to see the new one after being made to sit and stay, and then allowed to sniff the new pet through the bars of the crate whilst being restrained on a lead. This should be repeated at least twice every day until the Setter is familiar with the new pet. That is, the new pet is held by you, or is on your lap, and the Setter is relaxed with this situation. Introduction of a new pet can take up to two weeks. Always contact your breeder if you have any questions.
Before committing yourself, take a thoughtful look at your lifestyle. Is there room in your life for a dog? Are you prepared to take him to Puppy School to get him socialised. Later on it is also a good idea to seek out your local Obedience Club. Irish Setters are lively and affectionate and can be stubborn, so you need patience to train them. However, they are willing to please and excel at obedience training.
You need time to walk the dog and consider whether it is fair to leave him alone for long hours. Of course the perfect solution is to own two Irish Setters so they are company for each other!

TheTail of Two Setters
Meet ‘Eirean Mystify’, affectionately known as Jasper, a name of Persian origin meaning “bringer of treasure”, a title he lives up to every day with the comfort and joy he brings to those around him. Alongside him is ‘Eirean Artemis’, lovingly called Artemis, named after the Greek goddess of the hunt and protector of women and children - a fitting tribute to her gentle, caring nature. Together, these remarkable Irish Setters have found a special purpose as Therapy Dogs, touching hearts wherever they go.
Artemis and Jasper are litter siblings from Multi-Best in Show Supreme and Grand Champion Eirean In To My Arms (AI), affectionately known as Nico, and Champion Eirean Simply Irresistible (AI), known by the call name Hayleigh. Each is part of the esteemed Eirean kennel in Tyabb, Victoria, known for breeding setters with a focus on type, temperament, soundness and movement. In Artemis’ and Jasper’s case the preeminent attribute being temperament.
Forget what you may know of ‘Redbud’, the infamous Irish Setter starring alongside Andy Farmer (Chevy Chase) in the 1988 movie ‘Funny Farm’, these two are not just pretty faces, each has followed separate paths to be a Therapy Dog.
When one thinks of the Irish Setter, a high-energy, affectionate and intelligent sporting breed, known for its stunning mahogany or chestnut red coat and "rollicking," clownish personality, are descriptors that come to mind. Originally bred as a hunting dog, they are lively companions that require significant daily exercise and thrive on human interaction. But what is sometimes overlooked is the breed’s temperament and personality. Being overly affectionate and social, they are known to be loving, sweet-tempered and gentle, making them excellent family pets that generally get along well with children and other dogs. However, with the right balance of nature and nurture they can be most suitable as therapy dogs.
Artemis has followed what may be the more traditional path with rigorous obedience training, socialisation and specialised skills, training with a qualified and experienced dog training professional.
Whereas, Jasper travelled an alternate route. Jasper’s predecessor, an Irish Setter named Charlie, (Gwyndara Mystify) was raised in a loving home and often visited aged care facilities where he provided informal care and loving to the residents. How could you not love him when he would place his head in the lap of an elderly lady, where upon she would lovingly pat him, only to be advised by the nursing personnel “you know she is blind”. Unlike Charlie, Jasper’s love is children.
Every day we hear “you don’t see many Irish Setters these days” - well Jasper has been on a mission to catch up with his siblings and closest relatives and has had play dates with over 30 Setters from the Eirean line. That is another story, but was the reason to take a 4,000km return road trip to visit Artemis, his litter sister. Artemis was the inspiration for Jasper to be a Therapy Dog, after he joined her with her trainer on a training session in a busy Bunnings store in Rockhampton.
After he received a “you are doing really well” from the professional trainer the rest is history. The many days of socialising on the high street, the offleash park, the children passing the front gate on their way to the local primary school and close bonding with his ‘advocate,’ Jasper was well on his way and was assessed and passed muster by qualified animal behaviour professions at a leading Australian Therapy Dog Organisation to be a ‘real therapy dog’.
ARTEMIS
Artemis works directly with a clinical psychologist in Rockhampton, who provides direct care to clients, including adults with disabilities and their carers, first responders, returned veterans, and those affected by PTSD. Artemis is particularly sensitive to recognising anxiety and stress levels and provides targeted caring responses.
Ensuring criteria of responsible pet ownership and animal welfare, Artemis is only permitted to work every second day. Subsequently, clients with children will always double check appointment dates to ensure Artemis is rostered on, as the children will sometimes show marked reluctance to attend a session if Artemis is not there.
First responders face difficult situations and high-pressure incidents that can affect their mental health. Queensland Fire Department members are no exception, and Artemis is extremely popular with the firies when she visits, especially on the annual R U OK? Day.
JASPER
Jasper has other attributes and being so very, very calm and patient, along with a love of children, he has been placed on a program for very vulnerable children, where he attends every second week. The facility offers both respite and palliative care. Many of the children may be non-verbal, have restricted movement, and may have multiple chronic and life determining illnesses. Jasper has the amazing ability to read all the signals and, along with his extremely quiet and placid nature, he displays amazing patience, allowing the children to determine the level and type of engagement. Jasper may sit quite still, but attentive, for 20 minutes or more before a child may show a response and engage, whereupon Jasper will respond appropriately with love and affection; causing an immediate response from the nursing and therapy staff to reach for the facilities mobile phone/camera to take photos and videos to share with the child’s parents and carers.
The Irish Setter may not be the breed for every owner but are certainly a very versatile breed, both demanding and giving an enormous amount of love and affection.

Dogs Australia is pleased to welcome this new dog sport to Australia. The name may be new, but a similar sport has been enjoyed in a few other countries over the past 10-14 years. The conditions and code of ethics in Australia dictate that the rules and sport be different from its overseas origins, in the props used, classes offered, and non-live quarry/ scent tubes.
The sport derives its roots from farm dogs, ridding sheds and storage areas of vermin that damaged food. This involved searching, scenting and agility to access where the vermin hid. If a dog could not reach the vermin, it would alert its master to the location, and together they could remove the vermin.
The sport has been unofficially promoted for the past three years in Western Australia through fun practice days, led by Brigitte Walkey, who is a past Judge in the related discipline of Barn Hunt in North America. Ms Walkey also titled three of her own dogs in that discipline.
We are pleased to note that Dogs Australia has appointed Ms Walkey to become the Chair of the National Bale Seek Working Party. This will unify and standardise the sport of Bale Seek across Australia. Currently, there are six States getting involved - Western Australia, Queensland, New South Wales, Tasmania, South Australia and Victoria.
The sport is open to all breeds of dogs and Associate Registered dogs. Some of the dogs that have enjoyed the fun, training days came from the Toy group; such as English Toy Terriers and others from the Working and Utility groups, such as Australian Kelpies and Mastiffs. To date, we have seen breeds from every Group participate. The sport is held in a well-fenced area and involves bales of straw or hay (7-9 bales in the Instinct level, and up to 50 bales in the Master level) set out in specific patterns that include a tunnel made of bales and support boards. The Novice class has a short, straight tunnel, but in the highest class, Master, the tunnel will contain 3-4 turns! The amount of hidden PVC tubes varies per class, from 3 tubes in Novice to 8 tubes in Master.
If you have had the chance to come watch this sport, or participate, you know how much fun the dogs are having! They get to use their best attribute - their noses - to search around and over bales of straw or hay, looking to indicate to their handlers where the “quarry” is hiding. The scented items are hidden in strong PVC tubes that are lightly covered with loose straw so that neither the dog nor the handler can see them, yet the dog can smell them. Once the dog indicates the find (through touching the tube with their nose, pawing at it, staring, and/or vocalising) then the handler must call it, so the Judge may then confirm it, or it might be an empty tube! That’s where training helps, so the dog and handler work as a team. The sport challenges the team to work together.
SPORTS
There are titles to be earned in six regular classes and Veteran classes, plus an unofficial, fast-paced class called Super Seven Snuffle. Bale Seek is an excellent spectator sport, too! The events are currently held at Dogs West in the cooler months from late April until early October.
Western Australia is leading the way with training Foundation Judges and hopes to hold their first official Trials in September and/or October of this year. Other States are not far behind, because last year Ms Walkey already visited Tasmania, New South Wales and Queensland to promote Bale Seek through fun practice days. There is a huge interest in participation and welcoming this new sport officially across Australia. We hope you and your dog will come join the fun at the next Bale Seek event!

Snowy Paws & Happy Tails:
A Pet Parent's Guide to Taking Your Dog to the Snow
Words | Photography: KERRY MARTIN
It's quiet and I’m all tucked up in bed. Our dogs are snuggled tight in the crook of my knee. The unfamiliar light wakes me; a strange blueness glowing through the window. Suddenly I'm awake, remembering where we are. I leap out and gaze out the window to find the world transformed. The snow has fallen silently overnight, blanketing the trees, making uneven ground even. Crisp. Sparkling. Bright. Inviting us to leave pawprints on this new pristine world.
The dogs pick up on the excitement before we've said a word. We dress hastily, pulling on each layer until our limbs are plump with clothing. I grab the leads, my camera, and we step out.
This is Dinner Plain in the Victorian High Country. And for the past decade-plus, it's been the place Sam and I plan our winter around.
The Snow Country Catch
Australia isn't known as a snowy country. Compared to most of the world, our snow is limited, seasonal, and often fleeting. But it does fall, and NSW gets its share of it, particularly across the Snowy Mountains, the Blue Mountains, and the Central and Northern Tablelands.
The catch is that most of NSW's reliable snow falls inside National Parks and Alpine Resorts, where dogs aren't permitted. That means if you've ever stood in your kitchen looking at a snow forecast, dog at your feet, and thought "we should go," you've probably also discovered that "we" doesn't include the dog.
There are exceptions, and they're worth knowing about. Jindabyne, the town that sits below the major NSW resorts, sometimes sees snow on the ground when it falls at low levels. Other spots, including Oberon, Hampton, the Blue Mountains, and Orange, all get the occasional dusting, more so in big-snow events like the so-called "Blizzard of Oz" winters. None of them have reliable snowfall. When it comes, it will mostly be fleeting. The trick to experiencing snow in these parts is to keep an eye on the forecast and be ready to move when conditions line up.
Corin Forest in the ACT, just 45 minutes from Canberra, takes a different approach. Each September it holds a Dog Day Out (or two) in its Snow Play Area. It's the only time dogs are allowed in. It's on-leash, can get busy, and suits sociable dogs better than the worried ones, but for Canberra and Sydney pet parents wanting a snow sampler, it's a worthwhile day trip.
So when pet parents ask me where I head with my dogs for snow play in Australia, with chalets to stay in, deep snow to play in, and trails to walk on, I tell them about Dinner Plain.
What Makes Dinner Plain Different
Dinner Plain sits at 1,500 metres above sea level on the Great Alpine Road, between Mount Hotham and Omeo. It's a small village of architecturally designed chalets built in the spirit of the old high country huts. Think tiny European alpine village… with possums.
It's also the only place in Australia, above the snowline, where dogs are welcomed without a permit or special permission. Nowhere else in this country can you wake up in your own chalet, open the door, and walk straight into fresh snow with your dog.
Because of the altitude, the snow here is more reliable than at lower elevations, and the village itself is sheltered enough by Mount Hotham to be spared the worst of the western storms. Peak snow cover historically runs mid-July to mid-August, with the season stretching from June through September, depending on what the weather feels like doing. Occasional snowfall from May through to December can also occur.
What makes it work for dogs (and the people who love them) is the village itself. Dinner Plain is small and walkable. You can enjoy a hot chocolate around a fire pit with your dog by your side. Some of the cross-country trails double as hiking routes. There's a general supermarket for essentials, with Bright and Omeo down the mountain for anything more substantial.
The First Time Your Dog Meets Snow
But the village description doesn't really tell you what the place is. The dogs do. I'll never forget our first morning at Dinner Plain with Keiko, our Japanese Spitz. We didn't tell him where we were going (this conversation would have been one-sided). We just arrived, opened the door, and watched.
Cue the head-tilt. Then the cautious paw-lift. Then the dawning realisation that his world had turned into the most extraordinary playground of his life. Keiko went on to spend the weekend alternately overjoyed and amused, chasing snowballs with the kind of focused commitment usually reserved for treatos. Summer, who came along on later trips, took an entirely different approach: she demanded snowballs be thrown for her, then performed elaborate aerial interceptions. Scout, our newest pack member, hasn't met snow yet… but I can't wait to experience this first with him this winter.
Every dog meets snow differently. Some bound. Some dig. Some stand quite still, nose lifted, working hard to find the smells they expect to be there and aren't, or trying to figure out where the few that remain are coming from. Some do the full snow-spraying zoomies, and others quietly contemplate it like serious philosophers. Whatever kind of dog yours is, the snow brings out a side of them you've not seen before, with the kind of puppy-like exuberance you don't see often once they're grown.
For me, that's the bit I keep coming back for. The photographs are everything I hope they'll be, proof that the moment happened, that you were there together. But there's also what happens between you and your dog in a place this far from ordinary. The TV stays off. The pace slows down. You walk through the snow gums with your dog beside you, sharing the same crisp air, the same hushed quiet, the same wide-open beauty.

Planning Your Snow Trip (And What Not To Do When You Get There)
For your Snow Dogs trip, aim for July through August for the most reliable snow. Booking early helps especially for dog-friendly accommodation, which can fill well ahead of the winter season. Snow Dogs photography sessions, if you'd like photographs to be part of your experience, run for a fixed window each winter and are intentionally kept small. They also fill before the season gets underway.
Dinner Plain has a range of dog-friendly accommodation, from cosy chalets for two to larger lodges for groups. Bright, Omeo and Harrietville offer more accommodation options within day trip driving distance.
From Sydney, Dinner Plain is roughly an eight-hour drive. From Canberra, around six. The most direct route passes through Albury and Bright, then up the Great Alpine Road, which is one of the prettier drives in the country. Stop in Bright if you can. It's worth a visit, and is a pretty spot for a leg stretch.
You’ll drive through Mount Hotham to reach Dinner Plain, but don't stop here. You'll need a paid day pass to do so, and unless you're a resident with a permit, dogs aren't permitted within the Mount Hotham Resort during snow season. Keep moving, and you'll be at Dinner Plain in another ten minutes anyway.
These are mountain conditions. Carry chains and check road conditions before you set off. Pack everything you might need for your dog from home, including their usual food. The Dinner Plain supermarket is lovely and handy, but it has limited product lines.
Snow with your dog is not an everyday experience in this country. That's a large part of what makes it worth doing. There's something about the combination of altitude, snow gums, low light and a dog moving easily through it all that genuinely stays with you. Of all the places Sam and I have travelled with our dogs across Australia, Dinner Plain is the one we keep coming back to. There aren't many places where you can wake up and find your dog in deep snow at the door. We've never grown tired of it.
If a snow trip with your dog has been on your "one day" list, this might be the year to plan it in.

Vets Warn of Hidden Zoonotic Parasite Risk in Australian Homes
First all-in-one parasite protection that includes tapeworm launches in Australia
Australian dog owners are being urged to rethink how they protect their pets, as vets warn that parasites are no longer just a seasonal concern but a year-round health risk, including zoonotic parasites that can be transmitted to humans and impact human health.
New independent research from Advocate™ Ultra Chew conducted in partnership with PureProfile 1 surveyed more than 1,000 dog owners across Australia revealing a significant gap in parasite awareness, with over one in three dog owners (35%) unaware that common canine parasites such as tapeworms, hookworms and roundworms can infect humans.
Tapeworms in particular remain under-recognised by many dog owners, despite being the intestinal worm of most concern to pet owners. While 42% of owners report seeing symptoms that could indicate a tapeworm infection such as “bum scooting", most tapeworm infections remain invisible, posing a silent risk to both dogs and their families.
This warning comes with the launch of Advocate™ Ultra Chew, Australia’s first all-in-one monthly parasite treatment that kills tapeworms. It protects against fleas, ticks, heartworm and intestinal worms, including those that can pass from animals to humans and pose a serious risk to human health, like the hydatid tapeworm. It’s a reminder that some parasites are a risk, not just to dogs but to the families they live with.
Dr Liisa Ahlstrom, Technical Services Veterinarian at Elanco for Advocate warns, “Canine parasites are more than just a nuisance, they can have serious and even life-threatening consequences in dogs and in people. ”
Ahlstrom says, “Today, dogs are truly part of the family, sharing our homes, our holidays and even our beds. The bond between people and their dogs has never been closer, making consideration of zoonotic parasite risks and protection increasingly important.”
“We’re now seeing a shift in veterinary recommendations on how parasite protection is approached, with a growing focus on more comprehensive, all-in-one solutions that can help simplify the process and address these risks more effectively.”
With dogs now considered a member of the family, the risk of zoonotic parasites is increasing. The prevalence and dangers of parasites (particularly tapeworms) are often underestimated by dog owners. There are often very few or no visible signs meaning infections can go unnoticed, increasing the potential risk to humans. Importantly, the behaviours of most Australian dogs put them at risk of parasites, including tapeworms.
Advocate™ Ultra Chew
Advocate™ Ultra Chew simplifies parasite protection for pet owners. By including tapeworm protection, or the first time in Australia, there is a product that has been formulated to deliver the broadest spectrum2 of coverage that is available in a single monthly chew. The product combines four active ingredients into one palatable chew, protecting against:
● Fleas
● Ticks (including the deadly paralysis tick, brown dog ticks and bush ticks)
● Heartworm
● Intestinal worms, including tapeworms
● Demodex mites
Zoonotic Tapeworm Risks
● Hydatid Tapeworm (Echinococcus granulosus): A risk for dogs that can explore off-leash where there are livestock or wildlife, or for dogs fed raw untreated offal. Can cause a rare but deadly disease in people, slowly forming large cysts in vital organs (e.g. lungs, liver, brain) that can be difficult and risky to treat.
● Flea Tapeworm (Dipylidium caninum): The most common tapeworm in Australian cats and dogs, transmitted when pets ingest infected fleas during grooming. Infected people, usually children, can have an itchy bottom, mild intestinal upset, and crawling tapeworm segments around their bottom or in their underwear, and whilst not serious, can be very distressing.
How People Become Infected
● Infected dogs release microscopic worm eggs in their faeces that can be directly infectious to people, or via a flea.
● People can quite easily come into contact with eggs or fleas through close contact with an infected dog, forgetting to wash hands before eating, and for children, putting their hands and other things into their mouths.

2. Check for ticks regularly: especially around their head and neck if you’re in a paralysis tick region.
3. Plan ahead: If travelling with your dog, ask your vet for advice about parasite risk in your destination and ensure your dog’s up to date with their parasite protection.
4. Hygiene: wash hands before eating, dispose of dog faeces promptly, don’t feed dogs untreated raw meat or offal.
