'Despite the Afghan Hound's regal appearance, they can exhibit an endearing streak of silliness and a profound loyalty. Since ancient times, they have been famous for their elegant beauty, but the thick, silky, flowing coat isn't just for show. It served as protection from the harsh climate in mountainous regions where Afghans originally earned their keep. Powerful, agile hounds built for a long day's hunt, their huge pawpads acted as shock absorbers on their homeland's punishing terrain.' ~ American Kennel Club

Chairman's REPORT
Dear Members,
This month we have highlighted some of the outstanding achievements and activities that continue to showcase the passion, dedication and commitment of our members, volunteers and staff.
A major highlight is the Advance™ Sydney Royal Dog Show, including the Canine Hero Awards and the Canine Grooming Competition. These events demonstrate the very best of our canine community and would not be possible without our remarkable volunteers. Year after year, they deliver world-class events with professionalism, enthusiasm and dedication. On behalf of the Board and all members, thank you to everyone who contributed to making these events such a success.
This month we recognise the exceptional work of our grounds staff at Orchard Hills. Their efforts are often behind the scenes, but they are fundamental to everything we do. Day in and day out, they maintain and improve our facilities, enabling members to enjoy high-quality grounds for conformation and performance dog activities. Their dedication allows us to continue running the events and activities that support our beloved hobbies and sports. We sincerely thank them for their ongoing commitment.
I would also encourage all members to support the upcoming Sydney Dog Lovers Festival in August. This event provides a wonderful opportunity to showcase our breeds, sports and activities to the wider community. It allows us to engage with the public in a relaxed, educational and family-friendly environment, while promoting responsible dog ownership and the many opportunities available through DOGS NSW. I look forward to seeing our members proudly representing the organisation and sharing their passion together and with the public.
This month's breed spotlight features the magnificent Afghan Hound, often referred to as the "King of Dogs." Renowned for its elegance, history and unmistakable presence, the Afghan Hound remains one of the most admired breeds in the world. Looking ahead, the Board remains focused on delivering the priorities outlined in our Strategic Plan. Over the coming months we will continue to focus on our strategic directions, closely monitor key organisational data, establish a Youth Forum to encourage future thinking about our hobbies and sports, and commence development of a State Dog Sports Plan, to support this important and growing area of our organisation.
I would like to sincerely thank Director Ann Moy for her dedicated service representing the Western Region. Ann's contribution to DOGS NSW has been greatly valued and appreciated. I am also pleased to welcome Amy Gilson, who has been appointed by the Board to represent the Western Region on an interim basis. This position will be subject to election through the upcoming Board election process, and we look forward to Amy's contribution during this period.
I would also like to acknowledge Lisa Hadley, whose final day with DOGS NSW was 16 June. Lisa has been a valued and long-serving member of our staff team for 14 years. Her commitment, professionalism and service to members have been greatly appreciated, and we thank her sincerely for her contribution. We wish Lisa every success in her future endeavours.
In addition, Anthony Kharmas, our Operations Manager, will be leaving DOGS NSW on 28 August after eight years of dedicated service. Anthony has made a significant contribution to improving member outcomes and supporting the growth and operational success of the organisation. On behalf of the Board, staff and members, I thank Anthony for his service and wish him every success in the future.
DOGS NSW will undertake an appropriate recruitment process to ensure these important roles are filled and that we continue to provide strong support and service to members.
I am excited about the future of DOGS NSW and the opportunities ahead. By remaining focused on our strategic priorities and continuing to work together, we can strengthen our organisation and deliver ongoing improvements for members. Thank you for your participation, commitment and support of DOGS NSW. Together, we will continue to build a strong and successful future for purebred dogs, dog performance sports and the wider canine community.

DOGS NSW is more than just a venue for canine events; it is a living, breathing environment that requires constant care, planning, and adaptability. Behind the scenes, Grounds Supervisor Chris Gedzyk and his dedicated team continue to work tirelessly to ensure the grounds remain in top condition for members, exhibitors, competitors, and visitors alike.
Following on from last year’s feature, we caught up with Chris to hear about the challenges faced throughout 2026, the projects completed across the grounds, and what it really takes to maintain one of Australia’s busiest canine facilities.
Battling the Elements
This year has presented some unique challenges for the grounds team. High humidity, significant rainfall, and the natural conditions of the floodplain have resulted in unprecedented grass growth.
“The growth has been exponential this year,” Chris explains. “High use areas are being cut twice a week to maintain an appropriate height.”
The already challenging hydrophobic clay soil continues to be a major focus. While the soil naturally repels water, ongoing soil management programs are helping improve water absorption and drainage throughout the grounds.
At the same time, the team has had to manage rising operational pressures, particularly around fuel usage and supply.
“When we are running tow machine daily we are going through 60-70 of diesel in a single day,” Chris says. “Plus wear and tear on machinery increases significantly when mowing frequencies double.”
Interestingly, fuel supply issues have eased a little in recent weeks.
“When the shortages first started, we needed four weeks’ notice for fuel deliveries. Now it’s reduced to ten days, which is a big improvement,” he explains. “But there are still challenges. Unleaded fuel only lasts around five weeks before it begins to degrade, so storage and supply management are still really important.”
Preparing the Grounds for Winter
As autumn transitions into winter, the focus turns to preparing the rings for the cooler season.
The team has been busy seeding and fertilising the grounds, particularly with rye grass, which thrives in cooler weather and helps maintain the lush green appearance exhibitors are familiar with during winter and spring.
“We fertilise, top up with more seed as needed, and then the ryegrass is left to establish before gradually cutting it shorter,” Chris explains. “Once we get that first heavy frost, everything slows down considerably. Everywhere else might be brown, but our rings stay green.”
“The growth has been exponential this year,” Chris explains. “High use areas are being cut twice a week just then at an appropriate height.”
DOGS NSW Grounds Staff (left to right): Fredy Icao, Dave Hayes & Chris Gedzyk
Maintaining that standard, however, has become increasingly difficult due to global supply issues.
“Seed availability has become a real problem,” he says. “A lot of our seed comes from the USA, and tariffs have pushed prices up significantly; around a 60% increase. The issue now isn’t just the cost, it’s actually being able to get enough supply.”
Fertiliser costs have also been impacted by international supply pressures linked to the ongoing conflicts The team also continues its proactive weed and pest management program. “This year we’ve been dealing with Fleabane grass, which has become resistant to a lot of herbicides ,” Chris says. “We’ve been working hard to get the noxious weed that under control without using extremely harsh Hebrides .”
Alongside weed management, insect control remains essential to protecting the rye grass, with treatments targeting black beetles, ticks and ants.
While much of the work focuses on maintaining and improving the existing grounds, the team has also been busy delivering major infrastructure projects to support the growing range of canine sports held at DOGS NSW.
The SprintDog™ Area Now Complete
One of the biggest achievements this year has been the completion of the dedicated SprintDog™ area.
The project, which began late last year, has now been fully finalised with:
• The grounds levelled & prepared
• Old fencing removed
• New Fencing installed
• Power connected
• Toilets completed
• Road access improved & levelled
The area is now being utilised, with events regularly running during both the day and night across most weekends.
“It’s fantastic seeing the area in full use now,” Chris says.
“There’s been a lot of work behind the scenes to get it operational.”

Supporting Other Disciplines
The grounds team has also completed upgrades for other canine sports and activities around the grounds.
EARTHDOG
For Earthdog events, new hides had been purchased and built, the team is planning on having a new pedestrian access gate to improve movement between areas, along with two sheds and hides for judges.
“Working with all the different sporting disciplines is always interesting,” Chris says. “Every group has different requirements, and it really pushes our problem-solving skills.”
HERDING
The paddocks have been treated with lime for the return of the sheep. Noxious weeds have also been identified in the paddocks, which have now been sprayed.
Upgrading Camping Sites
We recently upgraded 20 previously unpowered camping sites to include both power and water connections, following many requests from our frequent campers. Approved by the Board, and completed in October, the project has already proven extremely popular with members and visitors alike.
A special acknowledgement goes to Chris, our Grounds Supervisor, who coordinated the project delivery and achieved almost $10,000 in savings by combining the excavation works for both the power and water installations at the same time.
Managing Around Events
As always, balancing maintenance with a packed events calendar remains one of the biggest operational challenges. With shows increasing throughout the year, the team works to a carefully structured weekly schedule.
“Monday is usually pack-up from the weekend’s events,” Chris explains. “Friday is all about preparing for the next show, which leaves about three days in the middle of the week dedicated purely to grounds management.”
Weekend staff member Fredy continues to play an important role in supporting event operations and ensuring the grounds are maintained during busy periods.

Biodiversity around the Grounds
Beyond the rings and roads, the DOGS NSW grounds continue to support a surprisingly diverse ecosystem.
The dam remains a key biodiversity project, with naturally occurring mites continuing to successfully control invasive weeds.
“You’ll see the weeds spreading, then a few weeks later the mites have reduced them again,” Chris says. “It’s a really effective bioactive approach.”
The team has also noticed the return of more native wildlife to the grounds in recent months “We’ve seen more foxes, kangaroos, and even tortoises returning, especially since the roadworks nearby have started to reduce,” he says. “We try to let that ecosystem manage itself naturally where possible.”
Looking Ahead
Chris says there are still plenty of projects on the horizon for the grounds team.
The team is hoping to continue upgrading roads around the facility, while several other projects are currently in the planning stages. “There are a few things in the works, but we’re working through the planning phase right now,” Chris says.
"For example, we have just renovated the old Jack Russell Terrier building in the Performance Field area to a fully functional meeting room space. This will provide another useful space for people to use in that area. Previously it had just sat idle." (See pictured right)
One question often raised by visitors relates to the unmown verge area between the DOGS NSW boundary fence and the roadway.
"We are working with council to have the section of land put on the councils maintenance schedule," says Chris.
Pride in the Work
For Chris, one of the most rewarding parts of the role remains seeing the grounds presented at their very best for members and visitors.
“There’s always something happening here,” he says. “The weather, the events, the sports, the grounds themselves,it all changes constantly. But that’s what keeps it interesting.”
With careful planning, innovative problem solving, and a hands-on team approach, Chris and the grounds staff continue to ensure DOGS NSW remains one of the premier canine facilities in the country.

Afghan Hound
One of the most beautiful and striking of all breeds, the Afghan Hound is an efficient hunting hound and a member of the group of sighthounds, commonly known as Eastern Greyhounds. They are long-legged and built for speed and endurance, with the ability to hunt small to mediumsized game by sight over rough terrain. They are keen hunters, noted for their independent spirit, and can work alone or as part of a pack.
History
The breed is an ancient one, but because Afghanistan’s Islamic culture forbids the depiction of animals in art, there is no early pictorial record of the breed. The only known early drawing is an etching around 1813, of a native soldier with a dog, which remarkably resembles young Afghans of today, indicating that the breed was very similar nearly 200 years ago.
The forebears of today’s Afghan Hounds were imported directly from Afghanistan and surrounding regions, where they were discovered by the British military in the 19th century. The hounds of Afghanistan and their legendary hunting ability were mentioned in letters from the Afghan front in the early 1800s, and some may have arrived in the UK at that time. However, they were first exhibited at dog shows in the mid 1880s and continued to appear in “Foreign Dog” classes, up to World War Some litters were bred, but it is doubtful that any survived the war years.

In the 1920s the importation of Afghan Hounds gathered momentum. The first group to arrive in 1920 were mostly of the rangy, lightly coated type, to become known as the “Desert” or “Bell Murray” (after their importer) type. In 1925, a Mrs Amps brought in another group, some of which were more compact and heavily coated, known as the “Ghazni” or “Mountain” type, of which a red dog “Sirdar of Ghazni” was undoubtedly the most impressive import to date, and became a very influential stud dog.
A great controversy arose as to which type was correct, with a famous exchange of letters in the dog press, but inevitably interbreeding took place, and the foundation of the modern Afghan Hound is a combination of both types. In the 1920s and 1930s the Afghan Hound went to Europe and America, and after a slow start, became as popular, as it was in the UK.
Afghan Hounds in Australia
The first Australian litter was born in April 1935, and some were exhibited at Sydney Royal in 1936. With the onset of World War II, there were no further litters bred and the bloodlines died out.
In the late 1930s and early 1940s the breed was considered a threat to stock by the pastoral community and was the subject of adverse newspaper coverage. The breed was last represented at Sydney Royal in 1940, but in Tasmania two were being shown in 1949. Unfortunately these valuable bloodlines were then lost, as no further breeding took place.
In 1950 Mrs. Ward (Golitha Kennels) brought a male, Devilkin Dasti Pasha, and a bitch in whelp, Devilkin Datoobhos, into Western Australia, and these hounds formed the basis of the breeding in Australia, with many of modern hounds tracing their ancestry back to them. From then on imports arrived at a steady rate, and by the mid 1960s the breed was well on the way to popularity in Australia, with many kennels established which are still active today. The quality of Australian Afghan Hounds is still considered to be amongst the highest in the world, and many have been exported to other countries including Europe, Asia, Scandinavia, UK and the Americas, where they have been highly successful. The breed may now be numerically small, but still retains its well deserved reputation as one of the most successful in the show ring.
Temperament
Afghan Hounds are dignified, independent, aloof and very very active. They can live indoors, but require a reasonably sized, well-fenced yard. They are self exercising and should also receive plenty of mental stimulation. They can be taught to obey basic commands with persistent training. Some Afghans have been known to succeed in Agility, Lure Coursing and other sports.
Appearance
The gait of the Afghan Hound should be smooth and springy with a style of high order. The whole appearance of the dog should give the impression of strength and dignity combining speed and power. The head must be held proudly.
• Head and skull: Skull long, not too narrow, with prominent occiput. Foreface long with punishing jaws and slight stop. The skull well balanced and surmounted by a long ‘top knot’. Nose preferably black, but liver is no fault in light coloured dogs.
• Eyes: should be dark for preference, but golden colour is not debarred. Nearly triangular, slanting slightly upwards from the inner corner to the outer.
• Ears: set low and well back, carried close to the head. Tail: not too short. Set on low with ring at the end. Raised when in action. Sparsely feathered.
• Neck: long, strong with proud carriage of the head.
• Forequarters: shoulders long and sloping, well set back, well muscled and strong without being loaded. Forelegs straight and well boned, straight with shoulder, elbows held in.
• Body: back level and well muscled, with moderate length, falling slightly away to the stern. Loin straight, broad and rather short. Hip bone plus removed dashbones rather prominent and wide apart. A fair spring of ribs and good depth of chest.
• Coat: One of the main features of the Afghan Hound is its coat, which should be allowed to develop naturally, is very long, and is finely textured on the ribs, the forequarters, hindquarters and flanks. All colours are acceptable. On the face, the hair is short, but is long from the forehead backward. It has a distinct, silky topknot and well coated ears.
In adult dogs, the hair from the shoulder backwards and along the saddle is naturally short and close. The Afghan’s legs are well coated, but the pasterns may be bare.
Sizes: Dogs 68-74cm; Bitches 5-8cm smaller.
Health
A hardy breed, Afghan Hounds have a lifespan of 12 to 14 years. They are relatively free from hereditary disease, but there have been instances of cataracts and hip dysplasia. Testing by responsible breeders has greatly decreased the incidence of both.
Suitability
Suited to almost any household that can provide enough space and exercise for such an active breed, Afghan Hounds get along very well with children.
The coat of an Afghan Hound being shown in the Conformation ring requires a reasonable amount of upkeep, including bathing and blow-drying each week to keep the long coat in top condition.
A pet Afghan Hound should be bathed fortnightly and will require regular brushing to keep the coat healthy and free from matting. They can also be partly or fully clipped to reduce grooming time.

Daily probiotic could help prevent skin infections in dogs
Adelaide University researchers and industry partners have uncovered scientific evidence that daily probiotic and postbiotic supplementation can significantly boost gut and skin health in dogs, offering pet owners a promising alternative to antibiotics.
The findings, published in Veterinary Dermatology and Veterinary Research Communications, are the result of one of the most detailed microbiome studies ever conducted in dogs, using advanced DNA sequencing techniques.
Over a 90-day period, the team of researchers, veterinary dermatologists and a veterinary company specialising in immune health products for dogs, tracked changes in the microbes of 12 healthy Golden Retrievers.
They found a significant positive correlation between gut health and skin quality, supporting the gut-skin axis in dogs.
While probiotics are commonly associated with digestive benefits, their broader systemic effects have remained largely unexplored in veterinary science, according to Darren Trott, Professor of Veterinary Medicine at Adelaide University and Director of the Australian Centre for Antimicrobial Resistance Ecology.
“This study addressed that gap, by examining whether oral supplementation could also influence the skin microbiome, an important barrier against infection and inflammation,” Professor Trott said.
“Our results show that a simple daily supplement can promote beneficial bacteria not only in the gut, but also on the skin. This opens new opportunities to support skin health in dogs without relying on antibiotics.”
After 90 days of supplementation, the researchers observed an increase in beneficial bacterial species, including Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus johnsonii and Limosilactobacillus reuteri, in both gastrointestinal and skin samples.
The team also found shifts associated with healthier microbial ecosystems. Dogs receiving supplementation showed increased microbial diversity, widely recognised as a marker of resilience and health, alongside a reduction in potentially harmful bacteria such as Staphylococcus pseudintermedius, which is commonly linked to skin infections.
The research relied on full-length 16S rRNA gene sequencing using PacBio technology, allowing scientists to identify bacterial species with greater precision than traditional methods.
This approach enabled a more comprehensive understanding of how microbial communities evolve over time and across different body sites.
“By focusing on healthy dogs in a controlled environment, we were able to isolate the effects of supplementation without the confounding factors often present in clinical populations,” according to Adjunct Professor Michael Shipstone, from Dermatology for Animals.
“This provides an important baseline for future studies investigating dogs with existing skin conditions, such as atopic dermatitis, where microbial imbalance is a known contributor,” he said.
The findings also have broader implications for antimicrobial stewardship. Skin disease is one of the most common reasons for antibiotic use in companion animals, contributing to the growing global challenge of antimicrobial resistance. Strategies that support microbial balance without relying on antibiotics could play an important role in reducing this dependence.
“Anything that helps reduce reliance on antibiotics while maintaining animal health is a win,” said Professor Trott.
While the results are promising, further work is needed to determine how these microbiome changes translate to clinical outcomes in dogs with diagnosed skin disease.
Future trials will focus on whether similar supplementation can restore microbial balance and improve symptoms in affected animals.
N.B. The study was conducted in collaboration with Activ Dog Health, a company specialising in microbiome canine health, who submitted their products for rigorous independent testing

Canine Grooming Competition
Sydney Royal 2026
On 13 April 2026, DOGS NSW Canine Grooming Committee once again ran a grooming competition in conjunction with the RAS Sydney Royal Dog Show.
The grooming competition was once again held in the Howie Pavilion and we welcomed two international FCI Grooming Judges: Mr Bernard Ong from Singapore and Mr Simon Yu from New Zealand.
Our major sponsor for this event was Plush Puppy along with Advance, DGS Imports, Oz Grooming World, Snout Snacks and Puppy Pal.
The standard of grooming was extremely high across all levels and categories. We received a larger entry in Model Dogs than last year and the competition was extremely difficult for our judge Simon Yu. Model dogs are mannequins that are traditionally used to practice clipper techniques, scissoring and creative pet grooming. Model dogs can be presented in Pure Breed, Asian Fusion or Creative. Model dogs intrigued the many general public that stopped to enjoy watching the groomers showcase their skills.
These competitions don’t just happen; it takes a lot of hard work for months prior by a very dedicated committee. Our committee members are Tricia Cutler (Chair), Tina Mougios (Assistant Chair), Angus McIlrath (Judges Liaison), Chrissy Mougios (Timekeeper) and Kath Purkiss (Media). We can’t forget our volunteers on the day Elizabth Vassallo, Melissa Fox, Alexandra Fox, Denise Bonwick and Victoria Masterfield. A special thank you to our very talented photographer Melissa Fox, for capturing not only our podium shots but many candid shots.
A special acknowledgement to Georgia Hawkins, Domestic Animals Events Manager and her team, for all their assistance to ensure the smooth running of our competition.

Making Memories & Breaking Records
Sydney Royal Dog Show
A Right Royal Wrap Up of the 2026 Advance™ Sydney Royal Dog Show
12 days and thousands of entries but for one dog, the show stopping ‘Anton’, it took just a single second and a flurry of camera flashes to secure his place in the history books.
The Best in Show win by the seemingly unbeatable four-year-old Standard Poodle was indeed one of the big moments of the 2026 Sydney Royal Easter Show, not to mention the first back to back BIS victory since 1934.
It wasn't, however, the only record broken at this year's ADVANCE™ Sydney Royal Dog Show.
The gates opened and the dog pavilion came to life on 2 April with the Sydney Royal Obedience and Rally Trials. Pristine judging lawns, a full grandstand and a big increase in entries for 2026 set the scene for a competition with Sydney Royal glory and a Best in Trial title on the line. It’s a big atmosphere, as any Sydney Royal Exhibitor will tell you, but nothing Border Collie Nahrof Zypperty (FS GR CH. HTM.GR.CH. O.GR.CH. R.CH. NAHROF ZYPPERTY CCD RAE TK.A UDX.) hadn’t seen before; Penny Dalzell’s much loved dog-sports superstar, effortlessly breaking his own record with his eighth Best in Trial win, an astonishing six in a row.
Obedience paved the way for conformation judging starting on Good Friday with more than two and a half thousand entries across the ADVANCE™ Sydney Royal Dog Show and Sydney FCI International. We welcomed five international Judges whose long-haul flights were made even longer, courtesy of an illtimed conflict in the middle east. Mary White from Canada, Boris Špoljarić from Croatia, Warner Céspedes-Arias from Costa Rica, Antonio Almeida from China and Australian Janelle Robbins who travelled from the UK, heaped praise the quality of the dogs along with the hospitality they experienced as Sydney Royal Officials. They were part of an outstanding panel of 17 Judges and more than 50 Stewards whose knowledge, passion and enthusiasm are the backbone of the Sydney Royal.
This year the Sydney Royal was privileged to host Specialty Shows for the Pointer, German Shorthaired Pointer, Jack Russell and American Staffordshire Terrier Clubs of NSW, while the NSW Police Canine Team and the Agility Dog Club of NSW lit up the lunch breaks with their incredible displays.
The Festival of Dog Sports was back in 2027 with competitions in Scent Work and Trick Dog while the skills and high-octane action of the Sydney Royal Agility Trial once again proved the ultimate crowd pleaser on day twelve.
With thousands of Show-goers making a beeline each day for the dog pavilion, the Sydney Royal Meet the Breed display is always the perfect opportunity to put pedigree dogs centre stage. This year over a dozen clubs each went to enormous efforts bringing dogs and decorations, providing endless pats and answering countless questions. It was an impossible choice, but the DOGS NSW cash prizes went to the Field Spaniel and Australian Terrier Clubs.
DOGS NSW also brought the glitz and glam of the Canine Grooming Show to the Royal with another busy competition that had crowds of onlookers jostling for the best view inside the pavilion.
Amid the non-stop program of competition, entertainment and displays, it’s General Specials Day that looms the largest. The stakes are high, the trophies polished, the atmosphere charged and the champagne on ice.
In front of a packed grandstand and after a dream Show, Border Collie ‘Lyanna’ (A2O GR CH FIN. MVA. INT.CH. SUP.CH. PUKAWIDGEE THE MOON IN WINTER HECW-25 WW-25) was awarded Sydney FCI International Best in Show. Owned, bred and shown by Ashlee Houlden, Lynette Houlden and Jarrod Tyler, the accolade is a coveted addition to an already impressive list of achievements.
As for Anton’s incredible repeat Best in Show victory at the Sydney Royal, co-owner James Bennett says, like in 2025, it’s all a blur. It may have been BIS win number 81 for A2O CH C.I.B. SUP.CH. VOILA RAISING THE STAKES (AI) but not in a million years did James think they could do it again.
The Best in Show official ceremony also saw the presentation of the 2026 RAS Awards by association President John Bennett OAM. Deirdre Crofts was honoured for 25 outstanding years of service as a Sydney Royal Dog Show Steward, Judith Docksey, Lynette Brand and Patricia Thomas for their loyalty and contribution as Exhibitors, each of more than 25 years, and Aimee Meagher received the Youth Medal for her excellent work encouraging the next generation to showing.
SYDNEY ROYAL
In their ninth year as major sponsors of the event, the ceremony was also an opportunity to recognise the enormous contribution and generosity of ADVANCE, which shares the Sydney Royal’s love for dogs, their health and wellbeing. Kaye McGhie was farewelled after a remarkable 30 years and Royson Valore welcomed to the team.
The Sydney Royal Best in Show event not only packed out the grandstand at the dog lawns of Sydney Showground but brought in viewers from across the world with the livestream event. To date the broadcast has clocked up more than 19 thousand views and continues to grow.
The Final Word – John Bryson RAS Companion Animals Committee Chair
What a Show! So many stand out moments, well deserved wins and proud achievements. Every day I heard praise from our Judges about the quality of the dogs or the sportsmanship and camaraderie among Exhibitors.
It’s what the Sydney Royal Dog Show is all about, a showcase like no other that reflects the enormous dedication of Exhibitors to breeding and training their dogs.
Each year the Show runs on the contribution, the passion and the hard work of those with a shared belief in the history and purpose of the Royal. It’s the Committee’s ongoing privilege to manage the event, we thank you for your support this year and hope you will join us again in 2027.
2026 RAS Canine Hero Awards
Proudly Sponsored by the Australasian Animal Registry Images: Kerry Afford Photography
Two extraordinary Canine Heroes were crowned on Best in Show Day at the Sydney Royal, each representing very different forms of service, but both perfect examples of the deep impact dogs have on our lives.
From a long list of contenders, Golden Retriever ‘Abby’ was the winner of the Assistance or Companion Dog Award, the nine year old honoured for her years of work as a Delta Therapy dog, visiting hospitals, rehabilitation centres and specialist schools across the Newcastle region. The award was particularly meaningful for owners Ralph and Trish Carlier who took on an anxious and withdrawn Abby after the death of her original owner. Her journey to becoming a therapy dog, connecting with and providing comfort to people experiencing trauma has taken much patience, love and encouragement.
Abby shared the stage with ‘Service Dog Winner’, NSW Police Explosives Detection Dog ‘Gary’, handled by Sergeant Sandra Laughlin. Gary was deployed as a first responder during the Bondi terrorist attack last December, clearing the area for emergency services and investigators. The role the black Labrador unofficially fulfilled in the aftermath was just as impactful, providing comfort and lifting the morale of traumatised first responders and members of the public.
The $1500 cash awards, courtesy of the RAS and Australasian Animal Registry were presented by NSW Police Minister, the Hon Yasmin Catley with the dogs and their handlers receiving a mighty cheer from the grandstand during their lap of honour of the judging lawns.
The 2026 AAR Service Dog Award: ‘Gary’, Sergeant Sandra Laughlin, NSW Police Dog Unit.
The 2026 AAR Companion or Assistance Dog Award: ‘Abby’, Ralph and Trish Carlier

DOGS NSW Information Stand
2026 ADVANCE™ Sydney Royal Dog Show
The 2026 Advance Sydney Royal Dog Show has come and gone, and what an exciting event it was!
Our grounds team, Chris Gedzyk and Dave Hayes, arrived early to set up in the Howie Pavilion, paving the way for staff members Kerry Christofi and Abby Davis to establish the DOGS NSW stand. This year’s standonce again included three key sections: our main Information Stand, the ‘Ask the Breeder’ area, and a dedicated Dog Sports area.
We were thrilled to welcome many new volunteers this year, who worked alongside our experienced member-volunteers to educate the public about the various dog sports they can enjoy with their pets as well as breed and club information. Led by stand supervisor John McLean, our volunteer team did a fantastic job throughout the event. The team this year were enthusiastic and proud to represent and promote our beloved sports and hobbies, helping the public discover all the ways they can get involved with DOGS NSW. We also had strong merchandise sales for our plush toys.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to all our fabulous volunteers for their dedication, enthusiasm and support as well as our members who came to show their breed to the public at the ‘Ask the Breeder’ section.

Important Update for Members & Clubs
TRANSITION TO ELECTRONIC BANKING
DOGS NSW wishes to remind members and Affiliate Clubs that the organisation will be moving fully to electronic banking and will progressively phase out the acceptance of cheques.
This initiative was originally approved by the DOGS NSW Board following a recommendation from the Finance Committee in September 2018. Since that time, DOGS NSW has encouraged the use of electronic payment methods, and the majority of members and Clubs have already transitioned successfully.
To complete the transition, the Finance Committee has now recommended the following implementation dates:
• Affiliate Clubs: electronic banking only from 1 January 2027
• Members: electronic banking only from 30 June 2027
The move to electronic banking will provide a more efficient and secure payment process while reducing the administrative costs associated with cheque handling, manual reconciliation, bank processing fees, and staff safety and travel for cheque deposits.
This direction also aligns with broader banking industry changes, including the Reserve Bank of Australia’s announced phase-out of cheques by 2030.
DOGS NSW will continue to provide information and support to assist members and Clubs with the transition. Further details regarding payment methods and processes will be communicated closer to implementation dates.

2026 ADVANCE™ Sydney Royal Dog Show
OBEDIENCE & RALLY TRIAL
Celebrating Skill, Partnership and Performance
A Strong Showing in 2026
Obedience and Rally Trials opened the 2026 ADVANCE™ Sydney Royal Dog Show showcasing impressive displays of skill, control and teamwork. The event attracted a competitive field, with handlers presenting well prepared dogs trained to a high standard, and ready to perform on one of the country’s most prestigious stages.
There were 164 entries across both disciplines, representing a 44% increase on 2025 and highlighting the continued growth of performance dog sports. Border Collies again featured prominently, alongside a diverse range of breeds including Labrador Retrievers, NorwichTerriers, Schnauzers, Old English Sheepdogs, Miniature Pinschers, Spanish Water Dogs, Golden Retrievers, Dutch Shepherds, Briards, Staffordshire Bull Terriers and Whippets.
Precision, Partnership and Performance
While Obedience and Rally each present distinct challenges, both are founded on clear communication and a strong working partnership between dog and handler.
Obedience demands accuracy, control and consistency through structured exercises, while Rally offers a more fluid format, with teams navigating a continuous course of stations that test precision, timing and connection. Across all classes, competitors demonstrated the results of dedicated training and a genuine commitment to the sport.
The trial was supported by an experienced judging panel, with Jill Houston (WA) and Jake Blight (NSW) officiating Obedience classes from CCD through to UDX, including the Dual Title class, which recognises dogs competing with both conformation and performance titles. Rally judging was conducted by Jill Houston (WA) and Veeni Craig (NSW), who presented thoughtfully designed and well-balanced courses across all levels.
Stewards
The event was further strengthened by the efforts of the stewarding team – Carmen Kong, Sue Brazier, Kathie Minton, Nigel Andrew, Dori Leadle, Sandra Gluck, Marie
Wardle, Ron Probert, Alan Luc and Carolyn Jenson –whose professionalism ensured the smooth running of the rings throughout the day.
A Stand-out Champion
The prestigious Best in Trial award was once again awarded to the outstanding Border Collie, FS GR CH HTM GR CH O GR CH R CH NAHROF ZYPPERTY CCD RAE TK.A UDX (Zypperty), handled by Penny Dalzell (pictured above).
In a closely contested run-off that reflected the depth of quality across the competition, Zypperty delivered another exceptional performance to secure the title, qualifying for the run-off with wins in both Open and Utility Dog Excellent. This achievement marks Zypperty’s eighth Sydney Royal Best in Trial win (2017, 2018, 2021–2026), including six consecutive titles: an extraordinary record that firmly establishes this team among the most successful in the event’s history.
Looking Ahead
The 2026 Obedience and Rally Trials were a resounding success, showcasing the quality of competition and the dedication of competitors, officials and volunteers. Congratulations to all competitors, particularly those who achieved new titles. We look forward to welcoming everyone back in 2027.
Agility once again proved to be one of the standout attractions of the 2026 Sydney Royal Dog Show, with competitors, officials and spectators treated to a full day of action-packed entertainment and high calibre competition.
With strong crowds throughout the day, the agility arena showcased the athleticism, training and teamwork that continue to make the sport one of the most exciting disciplines on the Sydney Royal program.
Competitors travelled from across Australia to take part in this year’s event, with the unique atmosphere of the Royal once again providing an added challenge. Between the crowds, public announcements and constant movement surrounding the arena, the Sydney Royal environment remains unlike any other agility competition in the country.
The day commenced with the ever-popular Gamblers classes, judged by Ms Simone Tolhurst (WA), before competition moved into the Jumping and Agility classes officiated by Mrs Joanna Comber (NSW) and Ms Tolhurst.
Throughout the day, competitors tackled flowing yet technically demanding courses that tested speed, accuracy and teamwork, while spectators were treated to fast-paced and highly entertaining competition. Several outstanding runs throughout the event drew strong applause from the crowd, with competitors and dogs rising impressively to the occasion under the pressure and intensity of the Royal environment.
One of the defining features of agility at the Sydney Royal continues to be the strong sense of camaraderie and sportsmanship displayed throughout the event. Competitors consistently supported one another both inside and outside the ring, celebrating clear rounds and encouraging fellow exhibitors across all classes.
The competition also provided an important opportunity to promote agility and organised dog sports to the wider public. Throughout the day, many spectators took the opportunity to speak with competitors and officials to learn more about getting involved in agility with their own dogs.
A sincere thank you must be extended to this year’s judges, Mrs Joanna Comber (NSW) and Ms Simone Tolhurst (WA), whose well-designed courses provided an enjoyable challenge for competitors while creating exciting viewing for the crowds in the grandstand.
Thank you must also be extended to the stewarding team for their work throughout the competition, together with the Agility Dog Club of NSW, which once again supplied the agility equipment used during the event and presented the popular lunchtime agility demonstrations that have become a staple feature of the Sydney Royal Dog Show.
The club’s ongoing support and contribution continue to play an important role in showcasing agility to one of the largest live audiences in the country.
The 2026 Sydney Royal Agility Competition once again highlighted the extraordinary partnership between dogs and handlers while celebrating the passion, dedication and community spirit that continue to drive the sport forward.

2026 Sydney Royal Festival of Dog Sports

The Sydney Royal Festival of Dog Sports, proudly sponsored by Ora Pet Beds, returned in 2026 as one of the defining features of the ADVANCE™ Sydney Royal Dog Show.
In just three years, performance sports have moved from a new inclusion on the program to a firmly embedded and highly anticipated part of the Royal experience.
The Festival was established in 2023 following the journey of Dashiell Hendricks, whose promising agility and conformation career came to an abrupt close after the loss of his front leg. What began as a response to one dog’s resilience has evolved into a celebration of adaptability, partnership and opportunity, showcasing disciplines that allow dogs and handlers to continue to compete, challenge themselves and thrive.
Scent Work
Scent Work once again commanded quiet concentration around the ring. Excellent and Masters Containers classes unfolded against the distinctive backdrop of the Royal, with dogs working methodically through carefully constructed searches. Spectators leaned in as subtle changes of behaviour signalled source, often witnessing the discipline for the first time and quickly grasping its technical depth.
Judges Natasha Neppl and Sharon Wee delivered thoughtfully designed searches that challenged competitors and translated effectively to a live audience. Sharon Wee officiated the Containers classes, with Natasha Neppl judging the remaining elements.
Trick Dog
Across two evenings, the Double Trick Dog Tests brought energy and colour to the Festival program. The ring became a stage for inventive choreography, technical precision and moments of genuine connection between dog and handler. From advanced routines requiring complex sequencing to performances built around personality and timing, the discipline again demonstrated both the challenge it presents to Exhibitors and the entertainment value enjoyed by evening Show crowds at the dog lawns.
Judges Shanelle Corben, Loretta Rabbitt and Carolyn Jensen presided over the competition, fostering an atmosphere that balanced encouragement with appropriate competitive standards.
Behind the scenes, stewards, officials and volunteers ensured the smooth delivery of each evening’s program and their professionalism and dedication underpins the event’s continued success.
The ongoing support of the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW and the Sydney Royal Dog Show Committee has enabled performance sports to reach one of the largest live audiences in the country, strengthening their profile within the broader canine community.
At the end of the day though, it’s the Exhibitors and their canine partners who are the lifeblood of the Festival. Competing within the demanding Royal environment requires composure, preparation and adaptability and in 2026, they delivered all three.
The Sydney Royal Festival of Dog Sports once again demonstrated that performance disciplines are not simply an addition to the Royal program — they are an important and much valued part of its identity.
