Chairman's REPORT
Dear Members,
I am pleased to report that the Strategic Planning Committee has endorsed the DOGS NSW Strategic Plan 2026–2030 , which was approved by the Board at the March 2026 Board meeting. The plan will be launched to members at the upcoming April Town Hall meeting and establishes a clear five-year roadmap for the organisation. I would like to sincerely thank the Strategic Planning Group and the Board for their commitment and collaboration over the past four months in developing this important framework. The plan will guide future improvement, growth, investment and strategic direction for DOGS NSW and strengthen strategic leadership at Board level.
The Office is also progressing a number of administrative process enhancements aimed at modernising services and improving the experience for members. Work is currently underway to investigate the introduction of digital pedigrees and titles delivered via email, as an alternative to traditional postal delivery, while still allowing members to request physical documents if preferred. Options are also being explored to allow sporting title applications and dog transfers to be submitted via email, removing the need for members to return original pedigrees to the Office as part of the process. Planning has also commenced for a potential online dog transfer feature, which would allow a current owner to initiate a transfer directly to a new owner through an online process.
Further improvements are being explored with our online service providers to enable real-time access to data from the DOGS NSW database, rather than relying on overnight updates. This will provide members with more accurate and current information when entering shows, particularly close to closing times. Recent initiatives, such as the introduction of Apple Wallet and Google Wallet digital membership cards, have already been extremely well received by members.
The DOGS NSW Dog of the Year, Puppy of the Year and Neuter of the Year event, held on 28 February 2026, was a wonderful celebration of excellence in our sport and a reminder of the passion within our community. With an outstanding entry of 168 competitors and very positive feedback from attendees and viewers, the event was widely regarded as one of the best in recent years. Congratulations to all exhibitors and finalists, and thank you to the Show Committee, judges, sponsors and volunteers whose dedication made the evening such a success.
DOGS NSW also recently recognised individuals who have made significant contributions to our community. Congratulations to Mrs Magda Smyth, who was awarded the DOGS NSW Distinguished Service Award for 2025, in recognition of her outstanding dedication to Obedience and the Eurobodalla Canine Club.
Congratulations also to the winner of the 2025 Wendy Downing Memorial Trophy, Ashsinhalt Dim Of Light JC. SPRD. FDX, affectionately known as “Tynk,” owned and handled by Samantha Raines, who has demonstrated exceptional enthusiasm and performance in lure coursing.
Events such as the Take Me to the Beach Cluster, hosted by the Wollongong & District Kennel Club, together with the DOGS NSW Illawarra & South-East Region, continue to showcase the dedication and commitment of our clubs and volunteers across the state.
Sadly, we also acknowledge the passing of John Canellis, who passed away on 23 February 2026. Together with his wife Patti, John bred and exhibited dogs under the Spicnspan prefix, producing American Cocker Spaniels, English Cocker Spaniels and later Pekingese. A respected judge known for his knowledge, fairness and integrity, John remained active in the sport well into his nineties. On behalf of DOGS NSW, we extend our sincere condolences to John’s family and friends.
Thank you to our members, volunteers, clubs and staff for your continued dedication to DOGS NSW.

Magda
Smyth
Magda Smyth has been a long-term active member of the Eurobodalla Canine Club, being a founding member since its commencement in 1993, having previously trained and competed in the Canberra region. She completed the DOGS NSW instructor course in 1994 and the refresher course in 1998.
Magda has performed many executive roles at the club, which there are too many to name, but currently handles all telephone enquiries from perspective members, meets and greets our members on training nights collecting their training fees, as well as catering for our bi-monthly meetings.
Each Saturday, when not at competitions, Magda happily imparts her knowledge and supports newcomers training their dogs in various dog sports and co-ordinates the classes. Each session, Magda drives 60 kilometres round trip and at the age of 86 is to be much admired.
Throughout our area, Magda is quite well known for her tireless work, whether supporting responsible dog ownership, RSPCA, Meals on Wheels, where recently she was awarded her 20 years long service award at the Eurobodalla Garden Club.
Magda has trained her Hungarian Vizslas to Obedience Champion title, as well as numerous other titles throughout her competition years.
Magda has been a stalwart member of our club and it was my extreme pleasure along with Chris Ritchie and Karen Gould to nominate Magda for this prestigious Distinguished Service Award for 2025 in recognition of her dedication to dog sports and in particular dog obedience and the Eurobodalla Canine Club.

2025 SHOW DOG, PUPPY & NEUTER OF THE YEAR
Saturday, 28 February 2026
“We’re back, baby!” — and yes, those were the legendary words of Shannon Lancaster, perfectly capturing the electric atmosphere of the evening.
This year’s event? Without question, the best we’ve seen in many a year - a spectacular celebration and a muchneeded boost for DOGS NSW and its passionate community.
The praise has been nonstop and second to none. The buzz, the feedback, the smiles, we’re truly overwhelmed. With an outstanding entry of 168 and a beautifully produced catalogue at an affordable $10, success was always on the cards.
And the entertainment? Isaiah was simply sensational. This young talent can sing — and he had the room completely captivated.
The live streaming? Industry best. A huge thank you to Rodney and Co. for delivering a seamless broadcast that allowed everyone to share in the magic.
In true show-stopping style, our judges, known only to two committee members, Rosemary Duffy and Lynda Brandt , were the best-kept secret in the dog world. When they stepped into the spotlight, they looked absolutely amazing, setting a new benchmark for events to come.
Our stewards were dressed to impress and performed a sterling job throughout the night — polished, professional and proud – thank you Christina Rafton, Aaron Brooker, Tracie Buckley and Tony Tau.
A heartfelt shout-out to our powerhouse committee: Deb Harbin, Jane Fisher, Deirdre Crofts, Lynda Brandt, Rosemary Duffy, Marilyn Parker and Vickie Harris. Your dedication made the night shine.
To our tireless Directors and volunteers on the night: Ross Sinclair, Vickie Harris, Christina Rafton, Lorne and Scott — we see you, and we thank you.
Special appreciation also to Paul Britza and Ozentries for a job exceptionally well done.
Our photographers Noeleen Marmont and Jo Meadows worked tirelessly all night to capture those special ring shots for our exhibitors’ future memories, as well as casual photos and those all-important official podium shots. Many thanks to our generous sponsors: Royal Canin, Sires on Ice, Pets on the Park, Marellan Show Ribbons, Delete, ShowAquipment, Orivet, Dog News, Ozentries.
When passionate people come together with a shared vision, wonderful things happen. And on this night, they truly did.

Wendy Downing Memorial Trophy Winner for 2025
Wendy Downing was a force of nature; not just a talented administrator and dog sport leader, but also someone with the rare knack of raising and conditioning consistent performers on the field from a diversity of prefixes. The Wendy Downing Memorial Trophy is awarded in her memory.
Meet Tynk the Whippet, Ashsinhalt Dim Of Light JC. SPRD. FDX the 2025 Winner
Tynk was bred by Ashsinhalt Whippets and is loved and handled by Samantha Raines.
Tynk commenced Lure Coursing in 2024, and there was no looking back. With her speed and drive, she quickly demonstrated just how much she loves the sport. Lure Coursing is, without doubt, her favourite thing to do. When she’s not giving her all on the field, Tynk also enjoys Flyball, especially the chance to run alongside some of her favourite doggy friends and humans.
Congratulations 'Tynk' and Sami!

Fur-friendly Guide to the Central Coast
From beaches and brekkie spots to pet-friendly stays and places to play
For a growing number of us, the worst thing about taking a family holiday is leaving the fur-baby behind and let’s face it, seeing those puppy eyes as you walk out the door doesn’t put anyone into the holiday mood. Plus, there’s the hassle, expense and fretting of planning a pet-sitter. So, why not check out these pet-friendly places on the sublime Central Coast and let your pup come along for the ride. After all, it’s less than a 60-minute drive from Sydney.
A place for every pooch
From beachside retreats and coastal caravan sites to hinterland hideaways, there are myriad options for pets and their people up and down the coast.
• Pearl Beach Shack, Pearl Beach - Hamptons-inspired and fully fenced with three bedrooms, a large undercover deck and a lush lawn. An easy stroll to a beautiful beach with an off-leash area. Pictured top right.
• Breakfast Creek House, Spencer – a renovated three bedroom farmhouse on 60 acres with a heated outdoor pool, separate one-bedroom cottage and sweeping valley views surrounded by Dharug National Park. Pictured second right.
• Lakeside at MacMasters Beach - a chic coastal rental opposite Cockrone Lagoon on the edge of Bouddi National Park with four bedrooms and a roomy backyard. Nearby Copacabana and MacMasters Beach are dog-friendly and so are many local cafes.
• Scenic Heights in Terrigal is a contemporary holiday home with a secure garden, sun-drenched deck and spa. Walk to fur-friendly cafes and the doggie zone at The Haven.
• JoeAnne on Blue Bay Beach is the ideal holiday house with four bedrooms, a fenced yard and a deck with beach views. Plus, there are boredom-busting bikes, kayaks, board games and table tennis. Pictured bottom right.
• Toowoon Bay Holiday Park in Toowoon Bay enjoys a prime beachside location and pet-friendly powered and ensuites sites, as well as a resort-style pool and jumping pillow. A popular off-leash sandy strip at Shelly Beach North is an easy walk away. See below and top right of page 15.
• Norah Head Holiday Park in Norah Head welcomes well-mannered dogs at its powered, unpowered and ensuite sites and enjoys direct access to The Lakes and Soldiers Point beaches, making it the perfect pick for fans of fun in the sun and water sports.
• Kim’s Beachside Retreat in Toowoon Bay is an adults-only retreat which also welcomes small pooches in select bungalows. Nestled with sub-tropical rainforest, Kim’s has an on-site restaurant, cocktail bar and spa for an indulgent escape.
• Two Shores Holiday Village in The Entrance North is a lakefront escape beloved by fans of boating, fishing and kayaking with easy access to beaches and national parks. Choose from pet-friendly cabins, powered sites and ensuites powered sites. Pictured right.
How to fill your dog-friendly days
The Central Coast is home to a collection off-leash parks, reserves, picturesque, shared pathways and beautiful beaches where your four-legged mate can enjoy the great outdoors with the whole family.
Barking good beaches
What pooch doesn’t love an endless stretch of soft white sand? Or some waves to paddle in? Whether entirely fur-baby-friendly or featuring designated off-leash zones, popular picks include North Avoca Beach, the long stretch from Copacabana to MacMasters Beach, Budgewoi Beach, North Shelly Reserve at Toowoon Bay, The Entrance North, Patonga Beach, Ettalong Beach and Putty Beach Road Reserve.
Enjoy a family frolic in Strickland State Forest (pictured right), where fur-babies can bushwalk with you. From wildflowers and woodlands to lush rainforest, the forest is a family favourite and one of the Central Coast’s ecotourism gems.
Let them loose in one of many wide-open spaces along the Central Coast – some even have agility obstacles for pups who love to show off. Favourites include Tuggerah Dog Park (see pictured below), Mataram Ridge Park in Woongarrah, Adcock Memorial Park in West Gosford, Captain Cook Reserve in Green Point, Fagan Park in Point Clare, Kariong Recreation Reserve, Terrigal Haven , and Colongra Bay Reserve at Lake Munmorah.
Canine-friendly cafes
Fancy a puppuccino in between days at the beach and playing fetch in the park? The Central Coast is home to plenty of cafes and restaurants which are ready and willing to welcome your four-legged friends.
Local favourites include The Point and Like Minds in Avoca Beach (the shaded garden at this zero-waste café is a hidden gem); The Bees Knees Eatery and Burnt Honey Bakery in Copacabana ; Bellyfish Café and Terrigal Beach House in Terrigal (pictured below); Café Mocha and Local Hero Coffee Brewers in Bateau Bay; Bark’n’Bone in Erina (the doggie treats looks as good as yours); and the Balinese-style vegetarian and vegan Bamboo Buddha in Holgate.
If you’d rather take your pup for a pint or a pinot than a hot cup then check out The Kincumber Hotel, The Boathouse Hotel Patonga, Bay Rd Brewing in Gosford, Firescreek Botanical Winery in Holgate, or the tavern at The Wyong Milk Factory where your four-legged friends will love the creek walk.

4. CHAIRMAN’S REPORT
I have had the privilege of serving on the Board of DOGS NSW since 2016 and, for the past seven years, I have been part of the Executive Committee. I was first elected President in November 2021, serving until April 2023, and was re-elected to the position in November 2023. Serving two separate terms on the Board.
The years from 2021 to 2025 have presented numerous challenges. Among the most significant were the ongoing threats posed by Government legislation, which cast a shadow over much of the optimism within the dog community. In addition, unprecedented weather conditions
disrupted our grounds and the COVID-19 pandemic severely limited our ability to engage in regular weekly activities, which are central to the social and recreational lives of our members and their dogs.
Looking ahead, key areas that must be addressed for the continued success of DOGS NSW include:-
Membership growth and retention: It is crucial to sustain and increase our membership base.
A positive outlook from members.
Strategic planning: We must develop a long-term strategy that considers our location and embraces opportunities for innovation to ensure a positive future for the organisation.
Currently, I serve as the Chair of the Media & Government Legislation Committee. Along with the Committee members, I am actively engaging with prominent members of the NSW Parliament to emphasise that DOGS NSW is the leading authority for responsible dog breeders in New South Wales.
Despite the challenges across the industry, our organisation has achieved a net surplus result for the 2024/2025 financial year. The results in the past few years have been supported by strong interest income results and the Board remains committed to delivering improved operational and financial performance.
Our Office is recognised as one of the most efficient in Australia, particularly in terms of processing registrations, transfers and other administrative tasks. The staff, who handle the wide range of responsibilities within the organisation, deserve full credit for this achievement.
I would also like to extend special recognition to our Company Secretary, Virginia Gagan-Wilson, who manages a wide array of tasks, from member complaints and Committee communications to preparing the extensive monthly Board meeting agenda, and Anthony Khamis for constant upgrading our valuable data and more.
Finally, I would like to express my deep gratitude to the members of the Board, who volunteer their time and expertise for the betterment of our organisation.

7. CONSIDERATION OF FINANCIAL REPORT – FOR THE YEAR-END 30 JUNE 2025
Mr Ross Sinclair, Chair of the Finance Committee and Director Elect spoke to the Financial Report.
Thank you to the DOGS NSW Management Team, our wonderful Board and the whole DOGS NSW organisation for your work and significant contributions in 2024/2025.
The 2024/25 accounts presented are a clean set of accounts and I thank the Financial Accountant, Kenny Liu, for your efforts in guiding this work with the organisation. It was a good clean result.
The Financial Statements are presented in pages 27 to 55 of our Annual Report and reflect a year of maintaining our fiscal and balance sheet position. Our working capital and net assets in the Balance Sheet remain in a solid positive position which indicates financial strength in delivering our short-term obligations.
The Board, Management and our governance frame through our peak Committees continue to be focused on improving business and operational performance to continue to drive balance sheet maintenance and improvement.
The 2024/25-year Statement of Profit and Loss and Other
Comprehensive income performance saw:In 2024/2025 Revenue including interest was $3.9m up from $3.5m, however, we must always not look at revenue in isolation but consider our offsetting Expenses of $3.6m which was up from $3.2m from the previous year.
This financial position saw a NET SURPLUS of $308k up very modestly on last year of $278k.
If we now normalise the result by taking out the interest income of $237k in 2024/2025, which was $278k last year, we have a true operational result for the business of:- $70,794 in 2024/2025 up very modestly from $66,740 in the previous year.
Note interest received fell by $26k year on year.
One-off business impacts this year were from the Agility National of approximately $50k one off loss due to bad weather and impacts to the grounds requiring restoration.
All in all, we held the line this year and we will work with the Management, the Board and our Committees and the organisation to ensure we remain financially viable in the face of increasing costs, regulation and key activity changes in the forwards.
The Board of Directors, Management and key organisation members will deliver a Strategic Plan in the coming quarters to provide a roadmap and a runway for innovation, improvement and growth to seek business opportunities, models and solutions. The Board is committed to delivering strategic directions to facilitate this organisation improvement.
I want to call out some positive good news stories achieved by the organisation driven by the Management team. We saw some real productivity and efficiency savings achieved for postage, printing and copier leases and there has been some good negotiation around energy pricing in the forwards.
Statement of Financial Position (Balance Sheet)
• Current Assets for 2024/2025 were $6.3m up from $6.0m from last year (due to cash and cash equivalents)
• Total Assets were $7.7m for this year up from $7.4m last year
• Current Liabilities are $1.4m this year the same as last year
• Net Assets of the Business and Retained Earnings are $6.1m up from $5.8m last year.
Statement of Changes in Equity
Retained earnings are at $6.1m
Statement of Cash Flows
Net increase in cash held was $471k for this year down from $537k from last year.
Independent Auditors Report
As mentioned previously, we had an unqualified audit opinion, so great work to Kenny and the Management Team.
Conclusion
In closing, thank you to our hard-working Committees that continue to focus on business and financial improvement, thank you for your work and your service. This is all voluntary work we undertake so a big shout out and a big thank you to all those who volunteer their time and skills. Let’s keep recruiting our army of helpers and volunteers. Thank you to the Management Team for your incredible work in dealing with the operational and statutory complexities of a large business, so well-done team.
As a newly elected Board member, I understand how privileged we are to have a committed, hardworking and professional Management Team and Board team and I am really excited about the strategic opportunities we have as an organisation to deliver sustainability and success moving forward. The fiscal environment remains challenging as the results have indicated and this will require commitment and focus from the Board and all of us. We need to be brave and adopt new ways of working and support innovation and change to foster future growth and success. Thank you.

Building Membership Through Education, Engagement and Community
There is a strong consensus that one of the most effective ways to encourage membership growth and long-term retention is through education and active engagement with the general public.
The challenge we face is that joining DOGS NSW is often not front of mind for many dog owners, particularly those who see their dogs primarily as family companions rather than as participants in organised canine activities.
We believe the key to shifting this mindset lies in education and awareness, achieved through hands-on experiences, accessible opportunities, and visible community involvement.
Expanding Our Reach
To support this, DOGS NSW is widening its offerings in several meaningful ways:-
• The Canine Sports Spectacular – an open event where anyone can bring their dog, watch demonstrations, try canine sports, and discover more about our world.
• Participation in community events – from large-scale shows like Dog Lovers Festival to grassroots initiatives such as Bunnings BBQs and The Blacktown Festival, we’re bringing DOGS NSW into everyday community spaces.
• Engaging, educational online content – creating and sharing trusted, relevant information that appeals to a broader audience and positions DOGS NSW as the authority on all things dogs in NSW.
The Missing Link
While DOGS NSW is increasingly present within the community, what remains missing is a consistent way for the public to connect with us, through ongoing communication, accessible sports, and inclusive community engagement.
Research supports the need for this approach:-
• 45% of Australian dog owners say they are inexperienced (having only recently acquired a dog or owning one for the first time).
• 79% of current pet owners report experiencing some challenges with pet ownership (up from 66% in 2019).
• Among dog owners, 64.3% list increased responsibility as a challenge, while 61.8% cite dog training as a key difficulty.
These figures highlight a clear opportunity for DOGS NSW to provide education, support, and community for new and aspiring dog owners.
Our Vision
DOGS NSW is already doing a great deal to build community presence. There remains a gap between positive engagement and membership conversion.
We believe this is often because the general public may not yet feel ready to compete or commit to formal membership. By introducing a pathway that allows them to be part of the community first: engaging in sports, attending training sessions and accessing resources that we can nurture this interest over time.
Ultimately, this approach will help people transition naturally from
community involvement to DOGS NSW membership, whether through beginner obedience, puppy training, or introductory canine sports.
FAQs
Why can’t I downgrade to a Community Membership?
Community Membership is designed as an entry point for people who are new to DOGS NSW and are not yet members. Its purpose is to welcome and educate the general public about canine sports and activities. Existing members already have access to greater privileges and opportunities, so this membership type wouldn’t be valid or appropriate for current members.
Why does the membership use the word “enter” if members cannot compete?
To participate in any canine sport or activity, a person must enter and provide their details to the organising club for insurance and administration purposes. We understand that the word “enter” may cause confusion and will work to clarify this terminology over time.
Why introduce this membership when existing members pay a higher rate?
This initiative is aimed at encouraging a broader audience to engage with DOGS NSW. We recognise that participation in dog shows and sports has been declining, and we need to create accessible pathways to attract new people into our community.

MOVED A McIlrath SECONDED K Charnock
(a) The Board of Directors may admit as a Community Member a natural person whohas attained the age of 16 years and who wishes to participate in canine activitiesthat do not involve conformation showing or dog breeding (full stop) They may beincluded in obedience, agility, scent work and other ANKC Ltd recognised dog sports.
(c) amendment – enter and “train”……. (not participate) LOST
A number of members expressed strong support for measures that lower barriers to entry and convert community engagement into membership. Whilst the “Community Membership” concept was well-received in principle it was defeated due to wording concerns.

Press Release: Ehrlichiosis in Australia
Ehrlichiosis in Australia - the advancing threat
Cases of Canine Ehrlichiosis have now been seen extensively across northern Australia, from Western Australia, Northern Territory, Northern and Northwestern Queensland and down through northern parts of South Australia. This is no longer a notifiable disease as the condition is now seen as endemic in these areas and the chance of eradication of this terrible disease has long gone. There is still a biosecurity obligation to take all reasonable steps if you suspect you have an infected dog to prevent further spread of this disease.
Cases have been reported in every state bar Tasmania, however, at this point in time, cases reported in both NSW and VIC have been from dogs that have travelled from the Northern Territory. There are new restrictions on dogs travelling into Tasmania as a result.
The number of areas where cases have been reported in QLD has increased and at latest reporting (early 2026), many north and north western districts have been listed including Mt Isa, Townsville, Carpentaria to list a few.
Any dog that is travelling through brown dog tick infested areas of Australia (including the whole of Queensland) may be at risk of infection. Brown dog tick infested areas include northern NSW, and with increasing climate warming, this line may push ever southwards. Maps that show the extent of where the brown dog tick is found throughout Australia can be seen on most (DAFF) Government sites.
Equally, most state web sites now have fairly up-to-date information available on Ehrlichiosis, the disease, its treatment and ways to try and prevent infection.
This is a deadly disease, and all dog owners should be aware of this advancing threat.
Best sites to check:-
• Australian Government’s Department of Agriculture: Search Results - DAFF - review details on Canine Ehrlichiosis guidelines for dog owners and guidelines for veterinarians.
• Ehrlichia canis information for veterinarians | Business Queenslandupdated 4.11.25.
I would strongly recommend that all owners regularly check their individual state’s information bases (usually the Department of Agriculture) for regular updates on this fairly rapidly moving situation. While 2 of these sites are aimed at veterinarians, they offer very good information about the disease itself, its diagnosis, treatment and above all, prevention!
Check dates, recent updates are important to keep in mind as the most current information available of where the deadly disease is moving.

A COPY OF
WILDLING ROAD
For as long as we’ve lived alongside dogs, they’ve been more than companions. They’ve been friends, fur babies, workers, and witnesses to our lives. That enduring bond sits at the heart of Wildling Road, the latest novel from award-winning Australian author Nikki Lee Taylor.
Set among the snow-dusted peaks of Australia’s high country, Wildling Road centres on female canine search-andrescue officer Mia Thomas and her Border Collie, ‘Koda’, as they are called into a remote national park to search for a missing teenage girl. But what begins as a routine operation soon uncovers long-buried secrets within a tightly knit rural community.
The novel has already earned industry recognition, winning the Hawkeye Publishing Manuscript Development Award in 2025. While the book delivers the tension expected of a rural noir thriller, it is the working partnership between handler and dog that gives the story its emotional depth.
“When I began writing this book, it was with the idea to combine two of my greatest loves - crime fiction and the relationship we have with our dogs,” Taylor says.
“Over the years, I’ve been lucky to have the love of three incredible dogs, all who seemed to find me at exactly the right time. But that’s what dogs do, isn’t it? They know what we need even before we do.”
Mia’s journey through Wildling Road is as much an internal battle as a physical one. Tested by the extremes of the alpine wilderness and the pressure of a male-dominated rural town, she is repeatedly forced to confront her own limits. But when things get tough, it’s always Koda she can lean on.
“Writing Koda allowed me to really explore the bond we have with our dogs, not just when we work or compete together, but how they steady us emotionally when things feel overwhelming,” Taylor says.“Dogs have the ability to love us at our absolute worst, and for me, that’s a love worth writing about.”

Pointer
History
Though the origin of the Pointer lies in Europe, the English created the breed as we see it today, from the Spanish Pointers imported with returning British troops after the Spanish War of Succession in 1713. Pointing and Braque type dogs can be seen in paintings from Italy and France from the 1500s, but few of these dogs would have been imported to England.
The Spanish Pointer was a heavier type of dog. A slow, methodical and very accurate worker, its lack of speed complemented the style of hunting at the time, with the use of flintlock guns and nets. As technology evolved and the pace of hunting increased, a faster dog with more stamina and endurance was needed.
Some breeders decided to outcross using Foxhounds, Greyhounds, Bloodhounds and Terriers. These outcrosses were not accepted by all breeders, as some feared that the changes would reduce the ‘pointing’ instinct.
Dog shows saved this breed. The first recorded dog show was held in 1859 at Newcastleupon-Tyne. It was restricted to Pointers and Setters, and its aim was to settle the argument as to which of the working Gundogs was better looking. As dog shows became more frequent, the Pointer breeders decided to stop the tendency to change the breed’s appearance with the outcrossing to Hounds and Terriers. They set a ‘type’ using the existing lines and strains, and it is still very undesirable today for a Pointer to show Hound or Terrier traits. As a result, the general characteristics of Pointers today have changed very little from their forebears. They are powerful, energetic hunting dogs of medium size.
Appearance & Characteristics
The Pointer’s freeze on classic point is unmistakeable, with nose and head held high, tail straight, taut and carried level with the top line, and showing every muscle of its well-built body. They are a symmetrical series of graceful curves and lines, having a strong but lissom appearance. Bred to gallop, they need strength, endurance and speed.
The head is the feature of the breed. Pointers should have a well defined stop and from this point forward the muzzle should be somewhat concave, giving a slightly ‘dish-faced’ appearance. The stop alone is not what creates the Pointer’s ‘dish face’; it is also enhanced by the carriage of the head. When on the move and especially when working in the field, the head and arched neck are carried high, as the Pointer’s role is not to follow foot or ground scent but to detect game scent in the air.
The ‘dish face’ with a large, moist, open nose, provides better scenting ability, and allows the dog to gallop without holding its head overly high. A dog with a level or downward-sloping muzzle has to hold its head in an unnaturally high position. This puts strain on the neck and can restrict the windpipe, reducing air intake. This in turn affects endurance and stamina.
Tail: The tail is medium length, thick at the root and tapers to a point. On the move it is carried straight and level with the top line, lashing from side to side with each stride. There should never be any upward curl or high carriage of the tail. The foundation breeders described the tail as a ‘bee sting’, and considered a tail with a high carriage a very undesirable Hound trait.
Gait: Being a working Gundog and expected to run all day, the Pointer must have a smooth, frictionless gait, covering plenty of ground – definitely not a hackney gait. It should have long reach in front, hocks that reach under the dog to drive it forward and a driving hind action.
Coat: Pointers have a short coat with a decided sheen, which makes them low maintenance. Colours are black, orange, liver and lemon, either solid or in any combination with white. Tricolours are also acceptable. There is no such thing as a badly coloured or marked Pointer.
Temperament & Trainability
Pointers’ kind, even disposition makes them excellent for field work, showing or a family pet. Gentle and fun loving, they enjoy human interaction and are very loyal and affectionate.
Their willingness to please makes them a good choice for Obedience, Agility and Jumping, or as a jogging companion. As they are highly energetic and enthusiastic hunters, they require an owner who can provide lots of exercise.
The aristocrat of the Gundogs, the Pointer is a professional worker, an elegant, eye-catching show dog and an ideal companion for an active family. The only problem with Pointers is that once you own one, it’s very hard not to have two or three.

In all sports there are those competitors who establish benchmark performances, and the field trial world is no different. Bruno Pollini’s Pointer Dual Champion Montenero Dougal CM, 'Whinger,' set a record that may never be broken in Pointer and Setter Field trials.
A breakdown of Whinger’s record gives indication of his achievements: 88 Field Trial Championship points, including two Victorian Championships, one Novice win, and the rest Open wins. At one stage 'Whinger' had a string of 8 consecutive Open wins to this credit. Included in his ‘haul’ were wins under three British judges, plus the nomination of Best Pointer at the Pointer Club Open Trial judged by the late John Nash of Ireland in 1988. 'Whinger' was also awarded a Certificate of Merit for his performance in one particularly hard-fought trial which he won.
He was also awarded the title of ACT Field Trial Dog of the Year in 1989, 1990, 1991 and 1992; and the Pointer Club of Victoria’s Field Trial Dog of the Year in 1991 and 1992. Two of his progeny have been awarded Novice Field Trial Dog of the Year in 1991 and 1992 by the Pointer Club, and in a nip and tuck affair, 'Whinger' just edged out his son in the triumph.
The title of Dual Champion was well earned by 'Whinger'. With 255 points in conformation shows, including Best of Breed at the Canberra Royal on 6 October 1986 (with a record entry) and Runner Up Best of Breed at Melbourne Royal.
'Whinger' added another illustrious feather to his cap on 6 June 1993, when he comfortably won the Inaugural Top Pointing Dogs Challenge Match at which all Utility Gundogs and Pointers and Setters were eligible to compete. This dog was unquestionably an outstanding representative of the breed.
Owners Colleen and Bruno have fond memories of 'Whinger' spending his later years sleeping at the foot of their bed.

Wollongong & District Kennel Club Inc. & The Illawarra & South East Region of DOGS NSW
Friday, Saturday to Sunday, 30 January - 1 February 2026
2026 saw the Wollongong & District Kennel Club ‘Take Me To The Beach’ shows host the Illawarra & South East Region of DOGS NSW shows making it a great summer cluster. Sunrise on Friday was just perfect so we knew it would be a great weekend weather wise. Next to the beach and walking tracks these shows attract interstate and local exhibitors alike. Located at the Shamrocks Rugby Union ground, Woonona, the shows are a mere 30 metres from the surf and sand.
Our theme of beachwear for exhibitors, Judges and Officials, saw the best (and worst) in beach wear. Rumour has it that Lowes sold out of their gaudy shirts (that they normally can’t sell lol) Competition for best dressed was hot and it was great to see all exhibitors, stewards and Judges get into the theme. The result - a relaxed fun weekend with lots of laughs and exhibitors enjoying the beach with their favourite pooches. We had fantastic weather and the dogs loved their beach swims.
The entry of almost 400 on Saturday proved that exhibitors love the regional venues. Our panel of Judges were well received and commented on the great atmosphere in and around the judging rings. Our Stewards made sure that the rings ran smoothly. And our raffle means the Club will be donating over $1000 to Ovarian Cancer research as our 2026 Club Charity.
Saturday also saw over 20 new exhibitors enter our feature event, the ‘New Exhibitor Sweepstakes’. Pauline Grutzner, Steve Wraith and Kerry Cannon were our sweepstakes Mentor Judges and ensured every exhibitor was given valuable tips and tricks to bring out the best in their dogs. A special thank you to them. The class was sponsored with prize money by Jayveeque Italian Greyhounds. First place was awarded a lovely boxed rosette and cash award. Thank you to Jackie Hardwicke for the generous sponsorship. From the 6 finalists 1st place was awarded to Oksana Chumakova and her Border Collie puppy Lapochka Stormfly. Well done!
Shamrocks Committee members with 1st place being awarded to the Bullmastiff ‘Sausage Dog’ Ch Bullmaster Blue Da Ba Dee and his owner David Simmons dressed with apron and barbeque tongs (see pictured below). There were formal complaints lodged by other contestants as it was touted that our Judges, the Shamrocks barbeque kings may have made a political decision! Better luck next year girls, you need to play to the judges!
The licenced bar was again a feature with alfresco seating, the Shamrocks Club members cooked their usual mean barbeque and threw in some friendly banter for free. With a walking and bike track next to the ground, the shows are always a drawcard for the general public. The Club would like to thank all the exhibitors who answered questions and chatted to the families who came to the show looking at the different breeds for their next family pet. Additionally, there were a number of new exhibitors who are keen to get to more shows due to the positive experience they received from other exhibitors. Well done!
Wollongong’s major sponsor was Purina Proplan with the Illawarra & South East Region of DOGS NSW Shows having Royal Canin. Thankyou for the excellent product donated as prizes. Thanks must also go to our vendors, Show Aquipment and Plackys Coffee and to the Shamrocks Rugby Union Club. Without their support and the great venue, the Wollongong and District Kennel Club ‘Take Me To The Beach’ Shows would not be the success that they are.
Bring on 2027!

John Canellis, a respected member of the dog community and a true gentleman, passed away on 23 February 2026 at Hawkesbury Hospital. He was laid to rest in Richmond on 6 March 2026. John was 91 years of age and leaves behind a remarkable legacy through his family, his lifelong love of dogs, and his many contributions to the purebred dog world.
John met his wife Patricia, affectionately known as Patti, when they were both young. What began as a pen-pal friendship soon blossomed into a lifelong love story. Together they built a wonderful life and family, raising four children and later welcoming many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom John was immensely proud of. His family was the centre of his world and remained his greatest joy throughout his life.
John and Patti shared another great passion - dogs. Their journey began when they purchased their first dog, an English Cocker Spaniel, while their children were still young. What started as a family interest soon grew into a lifelong dedication to breeding and exhibiting dogs. Under their well-known prefix Spicnspan , the couple bred and successfully exhibited championship-winning English Cocker Spaniels, American Cocker Spaniels (among the early breeders of the breed in Australia), and later Pekingese.
Beyond breeding and exhibiting, John earned considerable respect as a knowledgeable and honest Judge, officiating across the Toy, Gundog and Working Dog Groups. Known for his fairness and keen eye, John’s integrity and understanding of dogs earned him widespread admiration throughout the dog community.
John also possessed a remarkable ability to help dogs physically, often assisting exhibitors by assessing and working with dogs to improve their movement and comfort. Many affectionately referred to him as something of a “dog chiropractor” or orthodontist. Long after his own showing days had finished, he continued helping others and their dogs reach their full potential. Dogs instinctively trusted John and Patti, and their gentle approach earned them countless grateful owners, and many enthusiastic dog kisses.
Outside of dogs, John enjoyed swimming, a good round of golf, long conversations with friends, and a glass of quality red wine. His enthusiasm for life never faded; he was still playing golf and judging dogs well into his later years. John and Patti were devoted members of DOGS NSW, having joined in 1965. John remained a member for 61 years, a testament to his lifelong commitment to the organisation and the sport he loved.
John Canellis lived a full and generous life. His warmth, honesty, determination and unwavering work ethic left a lasting impression on all who knew him. He will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by his family, friends and the many people whose lives he touched within the dog world.
Many thanks to Denise Bartalis, John's daughter, who kindly provided much of this information for the vale.
Thanks to Noeleen Marmont Photography for providing the show images of John judging at some of his later show appointments.

In cases of doubt, advertisers are asked to seek legal advice before submitting advertising material.
DISPUTES
From time to time, members refer to DOGS NSW matters in which it is not appropriate for our organisation to become involved. For example, disputes between members in relation to the sale of dogs. These are usually private matters to be determined by the contractual agreements between parties. Disputes on such matters should be resolved by the courts and not by DOGS NSW.
Members are requested to refrain from referring such matters to DOGS NSW. They are issues of a private or domestic nature and should properly be resolved by the courts or the Department of Fair Trading.
