what our Breeders have to say:

It has been many months since I first fed my Labradors Royal Canin Maxi Adult Expert. I have found it to be nothing short of amazing for my dogs. Not only did my dogs love it, never leaving anything in their bowls but I observed how well this food improved their coats, helped each hold condition without an increased amount, it is easily digested and an excellent source of nutrtion for them.

Highly recommend feeding Maxi Adult Expert, great product Royal Canin.

President’s Message

February 2026 has been a month to reflect and celebrate the successes of 2025.

On Friday 6 February and Saturday 7 February 2026, the 2025 final of the Puppy of the Year, Neuter of the Year and Dog of the Year were held at Durack.

Congratulations to all those who qualified and those who made it through the various rounds. The winners can be seen on page 30 of this publication.

I’d also like to acknowledge all those people who worked for months to bring this event together. First and foremost, Katrina Santas the Chair of the Committee and the small but passionate members who contribute their time and expertise in co-ordinating the event. Our office staff especially Rob Harrison and Barbara Cumming for their constant support and patience. Thank you also to our wonderful sponsors for their generous donations and our judges, stewards, livestreaming platform manager, commentators and show manager.

We are always open to feedback on how these events are conducted. We are truly fortunate to have the opportunity to have “livestreaming” of these events, allowing people around the country to enjoy the judging. This is something that has only been available in recent years, and is provided free to those who wish to access.

Whilst we appreciate feedback on how you, the end user, would like an enhanced experience, disrespectful and derogatory comments are totally unacceptable! Please think before you post! Our committee is comprised of volunteers who contribute countless hours and personal expense to bring these events together. Respectful communication on Social Media platforms doesn’t seem too much to ask?

We are always seeking volunteers to assist with these events. Our committee is small, so please feel free to contact Katrina Santas (dqboardksantas@ dogsqueensland.org.au), Rob Harrison (rob@dogsqueensland.org.au) or me (dqboardcryan@dogsqueensland.org.au) if you’d like more information on how you can help. Perhaps you can put your suggestions to good work?

On Sunday 15 February 2026, our Dog Sport competitors came together to celebrate their successes over 2025.

Congratulations to all those members who achieved Championships in their various sports as well as those who were the winners of the various pointscores. Our dog sport world is growing more every year, so this is a wonderful opportunity for everyone to get together to celebrate each other’s accomplishments.

Board Notes – March 2026

INITIATIVES IN RESPONSE TO DNA TESTING DELAYS

At the December Members’ Forum, a number of concerns were raised regarding ongoing DNA testing delays and the impact these delays are having on Members’ ability to finalise Litter Registrations.

Dogs Queensland acknowledges that these delays are unacceptable and, in the longer term, will continue working with current DNA providers to improve turnaround times.

In the interim, Dogs Queensland will trial for 6 months the following initiatives to assist Members with registering litters and entering shows/trials.

Initiative 1

Members will be permitted to enter Baby Puppies in Conformation Shows in Class 1 and Class 1a only, using their Prefix Name, Proposed Puppy Name and Microchip Number in place of a Registration Number. This will be processed via a manual entry in Show Manager which will be exclusively managed by the Dogs Queensland Office and the Baby Puppy will be given a “Provisional Registration”. Members wishing to take advantage of this “Provisional Registration” should email rob@dogsqueensland.org.au with the following details, all details must be received no later than 1 week prior to the closing date of entries for the first Show that Members are wishing to enter;

• Initial Show wishing to enter

• Prefix Name

• Proposed Name of the Puppy concerned

• Microchip Number of the Puppy concerned

• Breeder / Owner Number

• Breeder / Owner Name

• Date of Birth, Age, Sex, Colour, Breed of the Puppy concerned

• Sire and Dam Name and Number

Once completed, Members will be notified that

they can transfer the dog into their Show Manager account. The dogs will not be registered on the ANKC database at the Dogs Queensland Office. All further entries into any class other than Baby Puppy, will require completion of the normal ANKC registration process. Once this ANKC registration is completed then you will be able to transfer the dog via Show Manager from the “Provisional Register” in your account.

Please note: This concession applies to Queensland shows only.

Initiative 2

In cases where a litter is submitted for registration and one or more puppies fail DNA Parentage Verification through no fault of the Member, consideration may be given on a case-by-case basis to registering the remaining puppies in the litter for showing or trialling purposes. Litters registered under these circumstances must be fully finalised within three (3) months of the initial registration date.

Members seeking consideration must provide:

• Dates of initial DNA testing

• Dates of upcoming shows or trials

• A copy of the failed DNA report showing the puppy’s microchip number

Dogs Queensland hopes these temporary initiatives will assist Members in getting their puppies into the show ring as soon as possible.

VETTING AT TRIALS – DOGS QUEENSLAND RULE 48

All Members and Club Secretaries are reminded of the following Rules around Vetting at Exhibitions and especially at Trials.

48 – VETERINARY EXAMINATION

48.1 The appointment of a veterinary surgeon or a Steward appointed for that purpose by the Club Committee is optional at any Exhibition, except for Sports Disciplines (as defined), where it is mandatory for entire bitches only. The Exhibition Schedule must advise if vetting is to be conducted at the Exhibition in question.

48.2 At every Exhibition at which a qualified veterinary surgeon or a Vetting Steward appointed for that purpose by the Show Committee is in attendance, he/she shall examine each dog at the entrance to the Exhibition (at a reasonable distance from the ring or point of assembly for competitors) and shall examine any dog objected to during the Exhibition and he/she shall refuse to allow any dog to enter the Exhibition or shall order any dog to be removed from the Exhibition if, in his/ her opinion, it is suffering from any contagious or infectious disease or any of the disqualifying features referred to in Rules 78.2(10), (12),

(13), (14), (15) and (16), or has been treated or prepared for Exhibition in contravention of the Rules of the CCCQ Ltd. His/Her decision in this regard shall be final. If the veterinary surgeon/ Steward takes action against any dog under this Rule he/she shall, at the time of examination, give his/her opinion in writing, signed, to the Show Secretary who shall forward it within seven (7) days to the CCCQ Ltd. No dog objected to may leave the Exhibition before examination.

A Club and the Event Manager have a responsibility to manage and run the operations of sanctioned events to be fair and equitable to all exhibitors and this important principle is a paramount objective at all sanctioned events. The sanctioned event must be demonstratively fair and equitable and exhibitor perception is one (1) of the elements in determining this principle.

48.3 Dogs which are brought to an Exhibition at which vetting is conducted after the completion of veterinary examinations, thereby being too late for such examination, will be prohibited from entering into the precincts of, or taking part in, the Exhibition.

48.4 At every Exhibition, a bowl of suitable disinfectant against contagious or infectious disease and a towel shall be provided for the use of veterinary surgeons/Stewards and Judges.

BEDLINGTON TERRIER

The Bedlington Terrier benefits from regular exercise, enjoying daily walks, but most of all he enjoys being included as part of the family ... they can sometimes be very quiet and docile and then sometimes do funny things to make the whole family laugh…

With its soft woolly coat, tasselled ears and narrow skull the Bedlington Terrier really does have a very different appearance and is the perfect breed for someone who would appreciate a dog with a unique look and a very loving and affectionate nature. They just love people and being part of a family. Although they are a terrier they are much more laid back, not as excitable or as active as the average Terrier. They are generally considered to be more hound-like than terrier-like and very much enjoy life as a loveable lounge lizard.

HISTORY

Modern historians of the breed believe the Bedlington and Dandie Dinmont Terriers both descended from a breed of terriers which originated in the north of England. These working terriers were similar in appearance but what the old terrier folk of the day were really after was their gameness, agility, and hunting prowess.

In the early part of the nineteenth century a Mr Edward Donkin had a pack of foxhounds which he used to hunt. He also had some working terriers in his kennels. In particular two of them “Old Peachem” and “Pincher” were quite famous around the district for their hunting abilities. It is believed that “Old Peachem” was the forefather of the Bedlington breed. He was mated to a bitch named “Venom” whose sire was the son of “Old Flint”…… “Old Flint” was born in 1782. Compared to many of our other terrier breeds it’s easy to see that the Bedlington has been around for a very long time! Piper, one of the early dogs descended from “Old Peachem”, has been described as of slender build, a liver colour, about 15 ins high and 15lbs in weight, with a coat of hard woolly, linty hair, large ears with some feathering at the tip. He was later mated to “Phoebe” who was described as black or blue black with a light coloured silky topknot. Piper and Phoebe display the appearance of the breed as we now know it.

The longer body and shorter legs of the Dandie Dinmont probably came from the introduction of blood from the longer bodied, short legged terriers from over the border in Scotland.

Meanwhile the longer legged, more slightly built of these terriers caught the attention of Lord

Rothbury of Bedlington in Northumberland County. Bred to hunt, the breed’s endurance, speed and great hunting ability so impressed Lord Rothbury, he used the dogs to hunt vermin on his estate and the breed soon became known as Rothbury’s Terrier. The name was later changed to the Bedlington Terrier in 1840.

The breed’s popularity spread quickly throughout the 1800’s, with the local miners using the dogs to guard their lunch boxes, rid the mines of rats, and to catch a rabbit or two for the family dinner pot. The Bedlington was also a popular breed amongst the poachers. Being light on feet, very agile and their ability to hunt and kill with a quiet calm nature made them an ideal choice for the poachers to use in their midnight raids on the fields of the local landed gentry.

EXCEL AT

Bedlingtons are quite a versatile breed, being

Ingrid Matschke Photography

favoured as a family pet, a good working dog or as a show specimen. Despite the lamb-like appearance they are one of the most commonly worked of all the breeds in the UK and the working dog shows always feature a large entry of Bedlingtons. There are two distinct camps in the breed in England; the working dogs and the show community and there is a fair bit of animosity between the two.

Bedlingtons are often crossed with a greyhound or whippet to produce the lurcher which is a very popular breed in the UK.

They also enjoy taking part in sports such as Sprint dog trials, Earthdog and Obedience trials. They are also easy to train because they just love to please you. Many Bedlingtons have performed well in obedience as they are so responsive and love to please their owners. Their lithe muscular body, as described in the breed standard, makes them an ideal choice for Agility trials. I often describe them

as part dog, part cat and part goat especially when they leap from one lounge to another in our family room.

TEMPERAMENT

The breed benefits from regular exercise, enjoying daily walks, but most of all he enjoys being included as part of the family – whatever you are doing he wants to do it too, even following you to the bathroom! They can sometimes be very quiet and docile and then sometimes do funny things to make the whole family laugh……like doing zoomies around the family room! They adapt well to the situation they are in and will either run madly around the backyard playing football with the children or later, sit quietly and watch television with the family. They love children and children seem to appreciate that the Bedlington is good to cuddle up to on the lounge, or take to bed. For the girls in the family, the females just love to have their nails painted or be dressed

up in Christmas gear. As a family pet they are good watchdogs, will bark to let you know when visitors arrive or the delivery man has just driven down the drive! However, they are more likely to lick the visitor to death than defend the home. They may look lamb-like but they do have “the courage of a lion”. Whilst they won’t go looking for trouble or to pick a fight, if trouble comes looking for them they will fight to the death. His courage is renowned amongst the working terrier men in England.

COLOURS AND COAT

The unusual colours and some of the features of the Bedlington coat are another unique characteristic of the breed. The colours of the Bedlington are blue, liver and sandy, with or without tan. It may surprise some people to discover that blue Bedlingtons are born black, livers a dark purplish brown and sandies are a yellowish brown. So, with the bi-colours we have

blue and tan, liver and tan and sandy and tan. The tan markings are on the face, chest, vent, tail, legs and feet. The tan markings often fade on maturity to a pale cream. The skin colour of a blue is dark blue and in the livers is a caramel colour. Blue Bedlingtons will lighten off through various stages to light grey and then to silvery white around 12 months of age. They will gradually develop their adult colour but this can change with the seasons and females seem to change after a litter or after having a season. Livers go through a similar colour change from brown, to light caramel and then to a sandy cream at 12 months. Bedlingtons have a very distinctive coat, which is thick and has a linty texture. The coat is an admixture of soft and hard twisty hairs, quite dense and this makes the jacket spring away from the body. The harder twisty hairs sprinkled throughout the coat are black in the blue variety and brown in the liver and sandies. If a Bedlington has an injury he will develop a dark patch of coarse hair in the

coat at the injury site; black in the case of a blue Bedlington and brown in the liver and sandies. This dark patch is only temporary and will grow back to correct colour in about six months.

SIZE

The Bedlington standard calls for the height to be 41cms (16 inches) at the withers allowing for a slight variation below for a bitch and above for a dog. Often, male dogs are 42 cms (16 ½ ins) to 43 cms (17 ½ ins) and the females 38 cms (15 ins) to 39 cms (16 ins).

BEST SUITED FOR

Bedlingtons live happily as a family pet with a backyard to run around in. They also live quite happily in an apartment where their owners are able to take them for several walks each day. They get along very well with other breeds and cats. Some Bedlingtons possess a high prey drive so may not be a good choice with free ranging chickens or small animals eg rabbits and guinea pigs. The Bedlington doesn’t shed any coat over the house or furniture and is free of doggy odour making

them the ideal indoor family dog. They are one of several breeds that are a good choice as a doggy companion for people who suffer from allergies. They are suited for families with children. They love to play a game of football in the backyard with the young ones. They are equally a good choice for an older person as they seem to have the intelligence to lower their activity levels with older folk and are happy to potter around the house, share their owner’s breakfast toast and snooze on the lounge in the afternoon.

GROOMING

They are a very clean breed and love to look good so they need someone who is prepared to spend a little time on coat care and is willing to have the coat clipped at regular intervals (about 6-8 weeks). Some owners take their dogs to a grooming salon for their bath and trim while others choose to buy some clippers and do it at home. A regular brush once a week with a soft wire slicker brush followed by combing through the coat with a fine toothed metal comb is all that’s needed to keep the coat free of knots. From an early age it is best to train

puppies to accept having their nails, ears and feet checked. Nails need a regular clip to keep them nice and short. The hair inside the ears needs to be plucked and a cleaning solution applied to inside the ear. This will help prevent any ear infections. Trimming the hair in between the pads and checking in between the toes on a regular basis can alert you to the presence of any grass seeds.

HEALTH

During the mid- nineties it became apparent that much of the breed in Australia were having some serious liver related health problems. It was discovered that these dogs were storing copper in their livers to toxic levels, a bit like heavy metal poisoning. They were diagnosed as having an inherited disease Copper Toxicosis (CT). All of the show/ potential breeding stock that were tested came back as positive for the disease. A group of breeders decided to stop breeding, form a syndicate to import some stock from overseas and work together to eliminate CT from their lines. Around this time several breeders sent DNA samples from their affected stock to Dr George Brewer at

the University of Michigan who later successfully identified a marker that was normally inherited with the defective gene. Further research has enabled the identification of affected, clear or carrier dogs. The syndicate were fortunate to acquire a tested clear dog from Sweden and another from England. These two dogs were used over the affected females to produce carriers. Later imports have been brought in from England, Sweden and Russia. The breeding programme has continued over the years and this disease is no longer affecting the Australian lines. We were successful in having an ANKC regulation introduced that requires breeders to DNA test the sire and dam before a litter can be registered.

Cases of eyes being affected with progressive retinal dysplasia (PRA) and the feet being affected with hyperkeratosis (cracked pad and corny feet) have been reported overseas however I haven’t seen either disease so far in Australian Bedlingtons.

All in all the Bedlington here seems to be quite a hardy and healthy breed.

Grand Nights! Supreme Dogs! Champion Times!

Queensland you've done it again! What a great evening was Puppy, Neuter and Dog of the Year for 2025.

These nights bring everybody together in our world, our community, our love of our animals, which allows us to showcase the best we have here in Queensland and probably some of the best dogs in Australia.

Puppy of the Year saw a fantastic entry of 100 puppies. The night was a little longer than expected due to Brisbane traffic issues that occurred that evening and the time to get through a great amount of entries … but nevertheless the dogs that won were certainly deserving of their wins and those that came through the ring that night were certainly the superior puppies being shown around our great state. Congratulations on your achievements in 2025.

At Neuter of the Year, there were some spectacular exhibits of both young and mature generations, parading themselves in true conformation fashion. These dogs are a testament to their owners and legitimate winners that prove themselves on the night as worthy of the level of their recognition.

The class of the neuters this year was certainly of a great standard and were noted by the judges as being some of the best neuters in current exhibition in Australia.

Dog of the Year saw a spectacular array of entries that had come from Best in Show winners at all breed shows, agricultural shows, limited breed and group shows, as well as breed specialty Best in Show achievers. Each dog was highly deserving of being exhibited on the night, showcasing their breed hallmarks, and owning the ring in every fashion. It was evident in every single entry the true pride and honour each owner brought their dog into the ring with. The sportsmanship and the congratulations from exhibit to exhibit as they passed through the ring was certainly noted by the judges as they made their decisions and had to retire a dog at each round – some of those decisions were extremely hard and made the judges certainly think as so many were multiple Best in Show winners but only one could be crowned Dog of the Year.

Our overall winners in every category look fantastic in their photos and showcased themselves with such great pride in the ring that night. It was easily one of the best nights on our Queensland calendar and was amazing to see so many faces from near

and far, all enjoying the comradery of our sport.

These events cannot be held without the help and dedication of a few exceptionally hard workers. Barb in the office with Rob and the team and of course the grounds staff headed up by Jess were just amazing. I'm sure you can attest that the grounds themselves looked so prestigious for the event and the catalogue produced by those in the office highlighted the wonderful array of dogs.

Thank you to all the exhibitors for sending your images in to showcase your dogs for this year's top events … congratulations on all the wins that you achieved to be there and representing your breed. We look forward to seeing you next year and wish you great success to qualify again.

To those on the night that assisted and helped, we thank you with all our hearts for helping us to enjoy such a spectacular evening.

To John Burgess our Ring Stewart, keeping the judges on time and managing them out in the ring … you always do a fabulous job!

To Graham Kerr and Brian, making sure our exhibits were at the ring ready to enter, thank you for rounding everybody up and making them feel rested and confident as they ran into the ring.

To Sue Hewinson, thank you for stepping up to volunteer to manage us at the admin table, making sure all the exhibits were checked in and their paperwork was correct and fine, and where

that the drawer was managed and that no hitch was too large.

To John Mitchell who help sell all our raffle tickets and ensure that everybody was having a good night with fashions on the field and having a bit of fun with the crowd … you certainly made for a fun evening and thank you for helping us in our fundraising efforts on the night.

To Carolyn Ryan our President, thanks for being the backup plan if needed at Dog of the Year as an emergency backup judge, although not needed, we appreciate you being able to step up to the mark when called, if called.

Thank you to Bill Smith for being our Show Manager and making sure that our event ran smoothly. And Andrew Ness for assisting in the showbag and trophy presentations.

Thank you to Belinda Thomas and Janet McGreggor for assisting us with the online commentary for the live feed … and of course to Shane Yate for managing the live feed. That's never an easy job and there's always options that we could do for next year but for those viewers at home I hope you enjoyed the evening and managed to gain an appreciation of the fun we were having there on the night.

Thank you must always go to Tracy Hopper, as our photographer, you took some amazing photos for us on the night and to Bruna for the ring side shots … thank you again … they certainly proved

contributing over $72,000 worth of vouchers and products for all the exhibitors to share in and enjoy from their show bags and welcome packs through to the final Dog, Puppy and Neuter of the Year recipients … your gifting was amazing and we thank you for all your generous support. We hope to see many of you back for other events that we conduct as a committee throughout this coming year and for the Dog of the Year in 2026.

But an event would not be an event without the fabulous judges making decisions … and the decisions on the two nights were not easy as the quality of the dogs was so very high. Many thanks to our panel: Val Carter from South Australia, Lyn Brown from NSW and Geoff Whitfield from

New Zealand for all your adjudication over the nights, your comments of appreciation and your feedback on our beautiful dogs that were presented before you.

As usual these events cannot be held or run properly without the assistance of several people and those people are few and far between because everybody wants to show an exhibit at Dog of the Year, and for those of us that help run the event we never get the opportunity to show at them even though many of us qualified.

There's always suggestions and there's always ways that things could be done differently and we're always as a committee welcoming any comments, feedback and suggestions. So if you have any constructive thoughts, please feel free to email us with the details of what you think might be able to assist us to help grow this event and make it from fantastic to amazing. At the same time, we're always looking for people to become part of our committee and we would love to hear from you and have you become involved in helping us organise this great event and of course the other events that we conduct at Dogs Queensland. Please feel free to email (dqboardksantas@ dogsqueensland.org.au) or contact me personally and let me know how you would like to be involved to help us make this great event even more amazing.

We look forward to seeing you all at the 2026 event. Keep a look out for the upgraded rules and information for the 2026 event in the very close future. Congratulations to everybody again, let's look to getting as many dogs qualified for 2026 event as what we did for 2025!

Dog Laws in Queensland -

Do you know the dog laws that affect you?

Whether you own one dog or several, Queensland has clear legal responsibilities for dog owners that apply from the moment a dog comes into your care. From registration and microchipping through to containment, nuisance behaviour and welfare obligations, understanding the law helps you protect your dogs, avoid fines, and be a responsible member of the community.

1.

STATE-WIDE LEGAL FRAMEWORK

Animal Care and Protection Act 2001

Under this Act you must provide your dog with appropriate care – including food, water, shelter and health attention (Section 17). It’s an offence to cruelly treat, abandon or neglect a dog (Section 18 and 19).

Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act 2008 (AMCDA)

This is the main law regulating dogs in Queensland, including:

• Identification and registration: All dogs must be registered with your local council and microchipped.

Pixabay

• Responsible ownership: You must control your dog and ensure it doesn’t become a nuisance or danger to the community.

• Regulated dogs: Some breeds/classes of dogs are considered restricted or dangerous. Owners must comply with extra requirements (permits, enclosures, signage, muzzling), and councils can declare a dog dangerous or menacing based on behaviour.

• Breeder obligations: If a dog has a litter, the breeder must register as such and provide a supply number when selling or giving away puppies. As a Dogs Queensland Member, you can provide your DQ Membership number when selling puppies as your supply number.

Local councils enforce registration, microchipping, restricted breed rules, and responsible ownership under state law.

2. MICROCHIPPING & DOG REGISTRATION

Microchipping (Section 14)

• Dogs must be microchipped before being sold or given away (usually between 8–12 weeks of age).

• If your dog is being microchipped before 8 weeks of age, proof from a veterinary surgeon is required stating that implanting the dog with a microchip at less than 8 weeks of age is not likely to be a serious risk to the health of the dog.

• When selling a puppies/dog, the owner of the dog must update the microchip details within 7 days of the change with the

relevant microchip registry (Section 16).

If you are unsure which registry your dog is registered with, you can search the microchip here at Pet Address. Simply type the microchip number in the search field; then click to search. If your number is found in one of the databases you will be directed to the database for further information.

Registration (Section 46)

• All dogs must be registered with the relevant local council by 12 weeks of age or within 14 days of keeping the dog in the Council area.

• You must renew registration annually and provide evidence of desexing, if your dog is desexed, to claim a discount rate. Some Councils also offer a discounted registration rate for Dogs Queensland members.

3. LOCAL COUNCIL RULES

While state law sets the framework, local councils can add rules (e.g., number of dogs per property and permit requirements), generally called Local Laws, that are enforced by Council.

• Many councils allow up to two dogs per household without a permit

• Some councils allow more (e.g. Ipswich allows up to four on larger properties).

• Permits may be required for multiple dogs, breeding or restricted breeds.

• Dogs must be contained on your property and not roam (secure fencing).

• Minimum standards apply when keeping a dog. The requirements vary between councils but generally include that the person keeping the dog must:

* Take all reasonable steps to prevent the animal from making a noise or disturbance that causes a nuisance or disturbance to the occupiers of neighbouring properties

* Ensure that any enclosure in which the animal is kept, is properly maintained in a clean and sanitary condition; and an aesthetically acceptable condition

* Waste waters from enclosures are drained in a nuisance free manner and

that run-off is kept off adjoining land

* Excreta, food scraps, and other material that is, or is likely to become, offensive is collected at least once in each day

* The area available to the animal kept on the premises is appropriately sized so that the animal can be effectively and comfortably kept

* Any animal food is stored in a fly and vermin proof container

* All animals kept on the premises are provided with and have access to adequate shelter, drinking water and appropriate food

Note: Specific limits and requirements vary between councils, so always check with your local council’s website for precise rules.

• Councils may impose fines for non-compliance with local laws.

4. REGULATED, RESTRICTED & DANGEROUS DOGS

Queensland law includes special categories of dogs:

Restricted/Prohibited Dogs

The following breeds are prohibited to own and import into Australia:

• Dogo Argentino

• Fila Brasileiro

• Japanese Tosa

• American Pit Bull Terrier or Pit Bull Terrier

• Perro de Presa Canario or Presa Canari

Dangerous or Menacing Dogs

• A local council can declare a dog dangerous or menacing based on behaviour.

• If declared, strict controls apply (e.g., signage, housing, leashing and muzzling).

• Owners can appeal decisions to tribunals such as QCAT.

5. TRANSPORTING DOGS IN VEHICLES

Thousands of dogs are injured each year while travelling in the back of utes because they aren’t properly restrained. Under the Animal Care and Protection Act 2001 (the Act) you have a legal obligation to make sure your dog is safe when travelling inside a vehicle and on a vehicle tray or trailer.

• You must not transport a dog inside a vehicle if any part of the dog, other than its head, can protrude from the vehicle.

• If you are transporting a dog on the tray of a vehicle or on a trailer, the dog must be secured to stop it from:

* falling off the tray or trailer

* moving off the tray or trailer

* being injured by the movement of the vehicle or trailer.

Unsplash

The safest way to transport a dog in the back of an open vehicle is in an enclosed cage.

Ensure the cage is:

• the right size—to prevent cramping and overcrowding

• well covered—to provide shelter from sun, wind and rain

• placed behind the cabin—to minimise exposure to dust and wind.

If you choose to tether your dog to the back of the ute, ensure that the lead or chain:

• attaches to a secure neck collar or properly fitted dog harness

• secures to a point in the middle of the cabin or tray

• is the right length—long enough to allow the dog to move about comfortably, but not long enough for the dog to reach the side of the ute

• swivels at both ends to prevent it becoming entangled.

Note: If your dog is helping you move livestock, it can ride in the tray or trailer without being secured.

Common animal-related offences

Avoid fines by being aware of the common animalrelated offences.

They include:

• failing to register, microchip or get a permit for your pet

• walking your dog off leash (unless in a designated leash-free area)

• not cleaning up after your pet in public

• allowing your animal to wander in public

• not having control of your dog in a public place

• excessive animal noise

dog from wounding another animal

Breeder Alert –Puppy Scam Websites

Dogs Queensland has become increasingly aware of Puppy Scam Websites using legitimate Dogs Queensland Registration and Queensland Breeder Identification (BIN) Numbers to sell puppies. Dogs Queensland Registration Numbers are obtained from legitimate websites such as Dogs Queensland or DogzOnline, where they are displayed as required by the Queensland Government.

Please see the Queensland Dog Breeder Fact Sheets for regulations and guidelines for Queensland Dog Breeders.

An example of a typical scam is:

• A Dogs Queensland Membership number is lifted from current advertising on the internet.

• The scammer researches and obtains personal details of the breeder including name, suburb, prefix.

• A domain name similar to the Kennel prefix is registered on an offshore registry.

• Once the breeder has ceased advertising the litter of puppies a new website is published.

• No physical address or phone numbers are advertised on the website.

• The seller avoids permitting you to physically see the cyber puppy and only sends non genuine pictures.

• The seller insists on only accepting payment by a crypto currency or a funds transfer.

As a breeder what can you do to avoid being an unknowing victim of a Puppy Scam:

• Regularly Google search the internet for websites using a similar Domain Name as your Prefix.

• Put a warning notification in your online advertising to alert buyers to check any website they are looking at is legitimate.

• Encourage puppy buyers to verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland and make direct inperson contact with you.

• Ensure puppy buyers check communications are made with verified contact details.

• Encourage puppy buyers to meet the puppy and breeder before handing over payments.

As a buyer what can you do to avoid being a victim of a Puppy Scam:

• Verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland.

• Ensure communications are made to verified contact details.

• Meet the puppy and breeder before handing over payments.

• If paying online, use a credit card or PayPal where you have a degree of buyer protection.

• Check website is an established site with a website security certificate.

• Avoid websites without physical address or phone numbers.

• A sk for proof, including ANKC registration papers and veterinary health records for any puppy.

Importantly you should report any suspect sites or advertising to the ACCC ScamWatch website. Please let us know about any suspect websites too by contacting Dogs Queensland on 3252 2661 or by email at info@dogsqueensland.org.au.
