The most complete parasite protection, all in one tasty, monthly chew

Valid to 30 April 2026
Ihope everyone had a great Christmas break and we are now well and truly into 2026.
Over the last few months we have had some events that make us all sit back and consider our own circumstances in life and just how lucky we are to be alive.
We have had the sad loss of one of our much loved members, Lindy Ryan. I would like to extend my condolences to Lindy’s family and friends. I would also like to thank those members who assisted on the evening when Lindy fell ill. We owe our gratitude to these members who step up in these difficult circumstances to give their expertise and assistance.
Moving into 2026, I hope members show consideration and understanding towards their fellow members, exhibitors, competitors and volunteers. With more and more events having limited entry numbers and some requiring a ballot, I do hope members consider the prospects of actually being able to attend the event before finalising their entry. We all understand that there will be circumstances that make it impossible to

attend an event, but double entering shows and trials for example, when an exhibitor can’t possibly be in two places at one time, is something that should be avoided.
We had a very successful meeting with members on 20 December 2025. This gave the members an opportunity to raise issues directly with the Board of Directors. We are working on finding solutions to the problems identified. We have agreed to have these meetings in all three Zones across the State and hold them every quarter. Thank you to those members who attended and contributed to the success of the meeting.
Our next major event is our final of Puppy, Neuter and Dog of the Year. We have an amazing entry of beautiful qualifiers and look forward to two exciting nights of competition. Thank you to Katrina Santas and her small committee for their work in organising the competition with super support from our sponsors.
Carolyn Ryan Dogs Queensland President

RULES FOR THE CONDUCT OF LURE COURSING COMPETITIONS (ENCOMPASSING LURE COURSING SANCTIONED EVENTS & LURE PURSUIT SANCTIONED EVENTS) – EFFECTIVE 1 JANUARY 2026: CORRECTION
The National Lure Coursing Committee has identified an administrative error involving the placement of a title within the rules. In the version of the rules distributed this morning, the prerequisite title for the Lure Pursuit Champion was incorrectly listed as the LPM title. The correct prerequisite title is the LPX title.
This oversight has now been rectified, and the revised version of the rules appears in the following link.

So just bring your chairs and tables and set yourself up for a great night ringside and cheer on your favourite dog which may be yours, your canine bestie’s or the one you drew in the sweeps.
There will be limited catering through Wagz Café on the night and prepaid orders will be available too –hot and cold savoury boxes as well as a sweets box too – pre ordered through Show Manager.
I’d like to thank our many sponsors that are coming together for the event and all the hard work of the Dogs Queensland Office and the Events Committee thus far for their efforts to get the event up and running for this year.
As Dog, Puppy and Neuter of the Year are such prestigious events for Queensland, I’d like to reiterate that no committee members or their immediate family shall be entering dogs that are registered in their name nor exhibiting dogs at this event. The committee do look forward to ensuring the nights are spectacular events and are working hard to ensure a great couple of evenings for all.
Congratulations to all the qualifiers and good luck on the night. We look forward to having you all at the 2025 Dog, Puppy and Neuter of the Year this month. Bring out your best cheers and enjoy this fantastic night together!

Stuart grew up on a small farm in Kilmore one hour North of Melbourne in Victoria, Australia. Stuart graduated with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science from the University of Melbourne in 1999. After graduation, Stuart worked in mixed practice for 2 years before moving to a small animal only practice in 2002. His small animal practice exposed him to canine reproduction work notably canine and feline breeding and parturition management. Stuart developed a keen interest in the field of small animal reproduction and undertook training with the American College of Theriogenologists to become a Diplomate in 2012. In 2012 Stuart also became a member of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists via examination in Animal Reproduction.

In 2014 Stuart published a landmark paper in small animal reproduction. The paper entitled: ‘Comparison of endoscopic-assisted transcervical and laparotomy insemination with frozen-thawed dog semen: A retrospective clinical study’ was published in Theriogenology, an esteemed animal reproduction scientific journal. The study showed that Stuart had achieved a 20% higher pregnancy rate using transcervical insemination (TCI) of frozen semen in bitches, when compared to insemination via surgery under an anaesthetic. This study was the first of its kind and a landmark study as it showed that the TCI method of insemination is more successful and has cemented Stuart as one of the leaders in his field worldwide.
Stuart has published many scientific papers and spoken at many veterinary conferences in Australia and overseas.
Stuart is the owner and Director of Doncaster Veterinary Hospital in Melbourne’s Eastern Suburbs, a general practice small animal clinic with a specialist reproduction department. Stuart is a registered specialist in Animal Reproduction – Small Animal.

The team running the SprintDog™ Trial, will do whatever it takes to get dogs to cross the finish line and earn a well deserved reward. Whether it’s a Pomeranian, Pug, Terrier, or a larger sighthound like a Borzoi or Greyhound, SprintDog™ welcomes all.
The biggest draw of SprintDog™ is the sheer fun it brings to dogs and their owners. It’s not about competing for the fastest time but about celebrating each dog doing its best and enjoying itself. The atmosphere is community focused and supportive, where participants cheer each other on. Even novice participants can jump right in without formal training in the sport (just make sure you read the rules).
Each SprintDog™ run involves two handlers: one at the start line and one at the finish. The Releaser holds the dog, waiting for the Sprint Marshall’s call of “Tally Ho!”— which signals the beginning of the run. As the lure begins to move, the dog is released to run after it or directly towards the Catcher at the finish line.
The way a dog finishes the race isn’t what matters; crossing the line within 60 seconds does.

To participate, your dog must be a member of Dogs Queensland (or other ANKC Member Body). Handlers should be prepared with a flat collar and two slip leads—one for the releaser to walk the dog into the Start Box and another for the catcher in the catching pen. A flirt pole can be a useful training tool for dogs that need motivation or practice.
SprintDog™ events are well organised with safety protocols and proper separation between dogs. This ensures a relaxed atmosphere where participants can focus on having fun. Events are held across various locations, not limited to Sydney. The sport welcomes everyone, including volunteers who want to learn and support the community.
SprintDog™ prides itself on being inclusive. It’s embedded in the sport’s ethos that all dogs, regardless of background or limitations, are

welcome. As long the dog is able to complete the
the finish line within 60 seconds can earn a dog a qualification, and each achievement is celebrated with the team and spectators.
Those interested in trying SprintDog™ or volunteering can attend events, mock trials, and training sessions. Beginners receive guidance, ensuring their dogs can safely participate.
SprintDog™ is more than just a sport, it’s a bridge between different canine activities, from show dogs to family pets, offering a chance to bond, play, and grow within a supportive community. Join the fun, get involved, and share unforgettable moments with your dog at SprintDog™.

Dogs Queensland has become increasingly aware of Puppy Scam Websites using legitimate Dogs Queensland Registration and Queensland Breeder Identification (BIN) Numbers to sell puppies. Dogs Queensland Registration Numbers are obtained from legitimate websites such as Dogs Queensland or DogzOnline, where they are displayed as required by the Queensland Government.

Please see the Queensland Dog Breeder Fact Sheets for regulations and guidelines for Queensland Dog Breeders.
An example of a typical scam is:
• A Dogs Queensland Membership number is lifted from current advertising on the internet.
• The scammer researches and obtains personal details of the breeder including name, suburb, prefix.
• A domain name similar to the Kennel prefix is registered on an offshore registry.
• Once the breeder has ceased advertising the litter of puppies a new website is published.
• No physical address or phone numbers are advertised on the website.
• The seller avoids permitting you to physically see the cyber puppy and only sends non genuine pictures.
• The seller insists on only accepting payment by a crypto currency or a funds transfer.
As a breeder what can you do to avoid being an unknowing victim of a Puppy Scam:
• Regularly Google search the internet for websites using a similar Domain Name as your Prefix.
• Put a warning notification in your online advertising to alert buyers to check any website they are looking at is legitimate.
• Encourage puppy buyers to verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland and make direct in‑ person contact with you.
• Ensure puppy buyers check communications are made with verified contact details.
• Encourage puppy buyers to meet the puppy and breeder before handing over payments.
As a buyer what can you do to avoid being a victim of a Puppy Scam:
• Verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland.
• Ensure communications are made to verified contact details.
• Meet the puppy and breeder before handing over payments.
• If paying online, use a credit card or PayPal where you have a degree of buyer protection.
• Check website is an established site with a website security certificate.
• Avoid websites without physical address or phone numbers.
• A sk for proof, including ANKC registration papers and veterinary health records for any puppy.
Importantly you should report any suspect sites or advertising to the ACCC ScamWatch website. Please let us know about any suspect websites too by contacting Dogs Queensland on 3252 2661 or by email at info@dogsqueensland.org.au
Veterinary medicine is continually evolving, with new discoveries reshaping how we understand and care for animals. Much like in human medicine, research drives this progress—providing the evidence-based insights needed to improve health, wellbeing, and quality of life.
For veterinarians, breeders, and owners alike, continuous learning is essential to making informed, compassionate decisions that truly benefit animals. Ultimately, research and education unite everyone who cares for pets in the shared goal of helping them live healthier, happier lives while advancing the future of both animal and human care.
The Waltham Petcare Science Institute—owned by Mars Petcare—is a globally recognised leader in scientific research and innovation in pet nutrition and health. Based in Melton Mowbray, UK, the institute has been advancing the science of pet care for more than 50 years.
Working in collaboration with leading universities, veterinary professionals, and industry experts, Waltham conducts world-class research to improve the lives of pets around the globe. Its work spans a broad range of fields—including nutrition, behaviour, and the human–animal bond.
Among its many achievements, Waltham has developed growth charts using data from tens of thousands of healthy animals—providing breeders and veterinary professionals with an invaluable tool to assess and monitor puppy and kitten growth.
The institute also leads efforts to promote sustainability in pet nutrition, pioneering the use of microalgae as an alternative, renewable source of omega-3 fatty acids. This innovation helps reduce dependence on fish-based oils while supporting marine ecosystem preservation.
Beyond nutrition, Waltham’s research explores the human–animal bond, showing how pets positively influence emotional and physical wellbeing—especially in children. All studies undertaken by Waltham meet rigorous animal welfare, ethical, regulatory, and legal standards.
To bring Waltham’s work to life, I’ve summarised three recent research projects that demonstrate how cuttingedge science is advancing knowledge in nutrition, genetics, and the human–animal bond.
1. Real-world diagnostic potential of bacterial biomarkers of canine periodontitis
Periodontal disease is common in dogs but often underdiagnosed, as early stages show few visible signs. Accurate diagnosis typically requires general anaesthesia for dental probing and radiographs.
In this study, researchers investigated the use of specific bacterial biomarkers—bacteria present in the mouth—as diagnostic tools for periodontitis. By analysing saliva or oral swabs, they aimed to detect these biomarkers non-invasively, providing a quicker and less stressful alternative to traditional methods. The findings showed that certain bacterial profiles correlate with both the presence and severity of periodontal disease.
The team analysed plaque samples from 127 dogs undergoing dental procedures, both conscious and anaesthetised. The qPCR assay achieved an accuracy of 77.7–80.9%.
This molecular screening tool could enable earlier detection of periodontal disease in conscious dogs, helping veterinarians identify cases that require further investigation or treatment. By enabling earlier intervention, such tools have the potential to improve both oral health and overall quality of life for dogs.

2. A splice donor variant in SLAMF1 is associated with canine atopic dermatitis
Canine atopic dermatitis (CAD) is a lifelong inflammatory skin disease causing itching, irritation, and secondary infections. Affecting up to 30% of dogs, CAD arises from a complex interaction between genetics and environment. Using data from more than 28,000 dogs, Waltham scientists conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) to uncover genetic risk factors.
Their work revealed a significant variant in the SLAMF1 gene, located on chromosome 38. SLAMF1 encodes an immune system protein involved in cell signalling, and a splice donor mutation was found to disrupt its normal function—potentially doubling the risk of CAD. This variant appeared frequently in French Bulldogs (71%), Boxers (40%), and Labrador Retrievers.
The discovery identifies SLAMF1 as a promising target for future treatments and a potential biomarker for genetic testing. Breeders may eventually use this insight to make informed breeding decisions that reduce CAD prevalence, while maintaining genetic diversity across breeds.

3. Effects of human-animal interaction on salivary and urinary oxytocin in children and dogs
This study looks at how spending time with dogs affects oxytocin levels, a hormone linked to bonding and social connections, in both children and dogs. Researchers measured oxytocin in saliva and urine during three activities: playing with their pet dog, playing with an unfamiliar dog, and playing alone (control). They also studied how genetic factors, like oxytocin receptor gene methylation (OXTRm), influence behaviour and oxytocin responses.
Key Findings:
• Children’s Oxytocin Levels: Oxytocin was higher when children interacted with dogs compared to playing alone. Looking into their pet dog’s eyes (shared gaze) boosted oxytocin, showing the importance of a close bond.
• Dogs’ Oxytocin Levels: Pet dogs had increased oxytocin during play, while unfamiliar dogs showed a decrease. This suggests familiarity plays a role in oxytocin release.
• Genetic Influence: Children with higher OXTRm levels released more oxytocin when playing with their pet dog but less during solitary play.
Together, these results show how meaningful human–animal interactions can foster emotional wellbeing and strengthen the human–dog bond. The findings may also have implications for the use of therapy dogs in supporting children’s social and emotional development.

Wisdom DNA testing, developed by Wisdom Health™, unlocks the secrets of a pet’s genetic blueprint, offering invaluable insights into their breed, traits, and potential health risks. For breeders, it’s a game-changer — enabling informed decisions to promote healthier, happier future generations.

As we enter into a new year it’s a time that many people pause to reflect on the year they have had and the year they want to have ahead. It’s also a perfect time to make small positive changes that improve your dogs wellbeing.
Here are some New Year’s resolutions worth making on behalf of your dog with a focus on health, happiness, and connection.
1. MOVE MORE
Look at different ways to exercise your dog that fits its health, age and mobility (and yours).
• Short, frequent walks instead of one long outing
• Incorporating sniffing time rather than constant marching (1 sniff can equal 10 minutes of exercise)
• Trying low impact activities such as swimming
The goal isn’t to get your dog exhausted – it’s fitness, confidence, and mental wellbeing.
2. FOCUS ON MENTAL ENRICHMENT
Mental stimulation is just as important as physical exercise. Dogs that are mentally engaged are often calmer, more settled, and less prone to nuisance behaviours.
Some mental enrichment may include:
• Rotate toys rather than leaving them all out
• Introduce food puzzles or scatter feeding

• Teach a new trick or refine a basic skill
• Let your dog “read the newspaper” by sniffing on walks
Five minutes of thinking can be as satisfying as a long run.
3. REVISIT THE BASICS OF TRAINING
Training isn’t just for puppies. Even well trained adult dogs benefit from revisiting foundations like sitting, recalls, calm greetings or learning a new trick.
A New Year’s goal might be:
• Polite lead manners
• A reliable recall in real world settings
• Calm behaviour around visitors
• Confidence building for shy or sensitive dogs
• Teaching a shake or wave

Short, positive sessions build trust – and remind your dog that learning is fun.
4. PRIORITISE PREVENTIVE HEALTH
Reviewing your dogs health status at the beginning of each year ensures nothing has been missed.
Consider:
• Booking routine veterinary and dental checks, especially for breeding dogs
• Reviewing parasite prevention
• Monitoring body condition and weight
• Paying attention to breathing, mobility, and stamina
Small observations at home can make a big difference long term.
5. IMPROVE DAILY NUTRITION
Whether your dog eats dry food, raw, or home prepared meals, consistency and balance matter.
A realistic resolution could be:
• Measuring meals accurately
• Reducing high calorie treats
• Using part of daily rations for training
Healthy nutrition supports joints, digestion, coat condition, and overall vitality.
In busy households, dogs can sometimes fade into the background of daily life. This year spend intentional time with your dog – without distractions.
That might look like:
• A quiet grooming session
• A solo walk without phones
• Sitting together at the end of the day

For dogs, being included often matters more than being entertained.
The best resolutions aren’t dramatic – they’re sustainable. You don’t need a brand new routine or expensive equipment. Small, thoughtful changes made consistently will have the greatest impact on your dog’s quality of life.
As we welcome a new year, perhaps the most important resolution is this:
To have a happy dog that is healthy in both mind and body and companionship is reciprocated.

I consider myself to be a long term resident of Boonah now and enjoy being a part of this community that embraces a very positive canine culture in the town. Most of the cafes along the street have water bowls outside the entrance for dogs to have a drink as they're walking past or if they're sitting down with their family to a meal. On any day, you will see a diversity of dogs sitting with their families at tables in the street.
Our town is well known for welcoming all members of the family. The town cat is accepting and will often walk around ignoring the presence of the dogs. Not too long ago, the town cat called Gerald, walked bravely along the street amongst the passing by of dogs, allowing them onto his patch. It's a shared space, with boundaries respected by all.
After watching the parade from the sidelines for several years now, I really wanted to be a part of it with my friends that I spend so much time with. I'd decided that it would be great to walk down
the street with my sporting dog and show dog fraternity, promoting who we are and what we like to do. It's not an easy task to organise, especially when the event was held on the Thursday evening which is probably not the easiest time for many that work. After putting out a call to the local community, several people and groups responded and we formed a small nucleus of people and their dogs to participate in the evening. Scooby Doo led the way carrying the Dogs Queensland flag followed by a Santa sleigh with a combination of sled dog breeds, show dogs and sporting dogs. What a wonderful group of people to walk “the magic mile” with so to speak.
The looks on the faces of the families and children as we walked down the street was priceless. So many smiles and sheepish grins could be seen as we strutted our stuff down “High Street” (yes, that’s the name of our main street). As we approached the centre of town where the main stage was set up, we were welcomed by the announcer and the cheers and applause from the community could be heard.

Photographers were stationed in all parts of the town recording the event and documenting the moments.
Our dogs were AMAZING! They were rock solid and confident amongst all the different noises, sounds and sights going on around them without hesitation. I have to thank all of the people involved for bringing along their beautiful 4 legged family members!
We were fortunate enough to have booth space allocated to us and given the opportunity to talk with a cross section of people from our local community. Some of my observations from the evening are as follows:
• When I talk about “Dogs Queensland”, no one knows who we are as a collective group.
• People in the community are not aware of the amazing range of activities that we participate in. I would love to give them the opportunity to grow in different ways with their dogs.
• There is a need for activities and spaces for families to recreate with their dogs. In my town, one of the local community service groups promotes a “Dog Day Out” extravaganza at the Leash Free Park that they built for the community. It is a big day of activities and well supported. I sincerely hope Dogs Queensland can be a part of this in 2026!
We need to be getting out into all of our communities with our dogs and selling ourselves and the Dogs Queensland brand!
My request to you all! We need your help to use your knowledge of your local community.
Have a look around your local area and find out if they have a major event/s that you think Dogs Queensland could be a part of. Make an enquiry for us about who we can contact, and then let us know the details. Maybe Dogs Queensland could support one of our local dog clubs in your area to help foster a positive presence in the community? We would be happy to help if we can. We prefer to be proactive and plan well ahead so the event can be appropriately resourced (a much easier process than the one that we went through this time!). What are the major festivals that you have around you that you think we might be able to tap into? Share them with us please. We value your knowledge.
On behalf of the the Marketing and P.R. Committee, I would like to thank everyone that helped and supported us in our first endeavour to share Dogs Queensland with the broader community. We are very excited to launch our next big event on Sunday 18 April 2026 at Durack: “Dogapalooza”.
We are looking for more breeds clubs to put their hats in the ring and bring your dogs along for the day! We want as many breeds represented on the day as possible so please consider coming along and supporting us.
As a side liner, we will also be looking for people to help us run it on the day – so consider sparing a couple of hours to help out, please please pretty please!!!!
Hope to see you all at Dogaplooza!!!!!!!

Dear Club Secretaries,
Dogs Queensland is excited to invite your club to be part of Dogapalooza Queensland, our biggest celebration of all things canine! This inaugural event will be held on Sunday, 19 April 2026, at the DQ Sports Grounds, 247 King Ave, Durack and promises to be an incredible day for dog enthusiasts, families, and the broader community.
We’re bringing together dog breed and sporting clubs, vendors, and demonstrations for a full day of fun, education, and inspiration. We’d love for your club to take part by choosing one (or both!) of the following options:
1. HAVE A STAND: Showcase your breed or sport, connect with potential new members, and share your knowledge and passion with the public.
2. HOST A “COME AND TRY” DEMONSTRATION: Give attendees a hands-on experience of your sport or activity! These demos are always a crowd favourite and a fantastic way to encourage newcomers to get involved.
This event is a wonderful opportunity to promote your club, attract new members, and celebrate the joy of dogs with the wider community. We’ll provide plenty of support to help make your participation easy and enjoyable.
If your club would like to take part, please contact: Khylie Wood at khylie.wood@gmail.com by 1 February 2026 to secure your spot.
We can’t wait to see your club at Dogapalooza 2026 and make this the best year yet!

The Beagle Club of Queensland held its annual Christmas Walk on Sunday, 30 November 2025, with a highly successful event that brought together owners and their Beagles in a celebration of the year. Set against the picturesque backdrop of the Gold Coast Broadwater, the walk attracted an impressive attendance of 118 Beagles, reflecting the continued growth and engagement of the club’s membership.
All the Beagles assembled at the end of North Street before commencing the walk along the foreshore toward the Broadwater Bridge. The route provided a safe and scenic environment for both dogs and handlers, while also drawing positive attention from members of the public. The large number of Beagles in attendance created a memorable visual display and highlighted the strong presence of the Beagle Club of Queensland within the broader canine community.
Following the walk, there were various activities for the Beagles and their owners to enjoy. Mini markets catering specifically to Beagles were a popular feature, offering a variety of products including treats, accessories, and specialty items.
A sausage sizzle is always a popular spot especially for the Beagles and this didn’t disappoint. In addition, the famous Christmas Hampers were well supported, with proceeds contributing to the club’s ongoing initiatives and future events.

A key highlight of the day was the appearance of Santa Claus, who was available for photographs with the Beagles. The Santa selfies proved extremely popular, providing owners with lasting keepsakes and adding a festive spirit.
The Christmas Walk also included a significant and reflective component with the club’s annual Rainbow Bridge display. This tribute honoured Beagles who had passed away during the previous twelve months. The display offered members a respectful space to remember and acknowledge the lives of their beloved companions and underscored the strong emotional bonds shared within the Beagle community.
We also had the added surprise of Channel 9 Gold Coast choosing to cover our Christmas event which was a great way to spread the event and also the purebred Beagle and our Club.
Overall, the 2025 Christmas Walk was a highly successful event that combined celebration, remembrance, and community engagement. The Beagle Club of Queensland extends its sincere appreciation to all members, volunteers, sponsors, and attendees whose support ensured the smooth running of the day. The event once again demonstrated the club’s commitment to fostering connection among Beagle owners while celebrating the breed in a positive and inclusive environment.

Tonka the Portuguese Podengo (Small Smooth Haired) might be small in stature, but he is certainly BIG in accomplishments! Together with his owner Wendy Casey, Tonka has attained not one, but TWO sporting Championships within the space of a month. Across multiple sports, Tonka is recognised as a tough, tenacious competitor who refuses to give up and has now achieved recognition for his tireless work ethic.

“small” dog to attain the Scent Work Champion title. Scent work can be especially challenging for small dogs, as the target “hides” in Scent work Masters and Ultimate classes may be located up to 1.5m from the ground!
Introducing Tonka, LP.Ch SW.Ch Alarves Heart On My Sleeve LPM2 RN SPRD.A!
While Wendy and Tonka are not only the first Portuguese Podengo in Australia to gain their Scent Work Championship title, Tonka is also the first

To be awarded the title of Scent Work Champion, teams must have achieved their Scent Work Master title in addition to all four Element Titles (44 Qualifications in total) and then achieve their Scent Work Ultimate title – 5 Qualifications under a minimum of three different judges. This title is a huge undertaking, and Tonka is amongst the elite few Australia wide whom have gained this championship.
"It's
not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog." – Mark Twain
Just a few weeks later, Tonka ran his heart out on the lure coursing field at the American Staffordshire Terrier Club of Qld veteran trial to gain the final qualification for his Lure Pursuit Champion title, also gaining his Lure Pursuit Master 2 title (16 passes at Masters level).
Tonka’s breeder – Jenni McKernan – who first introduced Wendy and Tonka to Lure Coursing in 2019, was also there on the day to witness Tonka become the first Portuguese Podengo to attain the Lure Pursuit Championship title.
To be awarded the title of Lure Pursuit Champion, teams must have gained an additional 4 masters level qualifications of a minimum of 140 points, under 4 different judges and at least 2 different courses.
The Portuguese Podengo is an ancient multi sensory hound (sight and scent) originating in Portugal. As a breed, the Podengo is divided into three size categories that are not interbred: small (Pequeno), medium (Médio) and large (Grande). Their coats are either short and ‘smooth’, or longer and ‘wired’. Each variety is suited to different climates, terrain, type of prey and hunting style.

Keen hunting dogs, the Podengo is a versatile hunter and companion that uses all its senses combined with agility, speed and endurance. Each size category traditionally hunts game appropriate to their size and temperament.

15/07/1930 – 8/07/2025
Dot grew up on a dairy farm and was raised by her grandparents in the town of Widgee, Queensland. Her grandfather was instrumental in educating Dot in animal husbandry, and her interest in dogs and breeding was due to growing up with Cattle Dogs and Border Collies that were used on the farm; her favourite one being a bitch called Flossie. She also owned German Shepherds and Pomeranians before she became involved in Basenjis.
Dot was competitive and took on challenges in her life. Before gaining an interest in breed conformation, Dot was a champion quarter horse rider, cyclist and competitive squash player. Dot had also told people close to her that for quite a while in her life she could not read and write. But again she took on that challenge and taught herself these important life skills.
Dot’s involvement with Basenjis was really started by her son Karl who had seen a Basenji in a book. Karl encouraged Dot to buy a Basenji, which she bought from Delma Clatsworthy of Brisbane. The Basenji was called Koorabar Makala born April 1967. As there was no specialist breed club in Queensland at the time Dot joined the newly formed Basenji Club of Victoria, which was established in 1966 and held its first show in 1967. Dot remained a member of the Basenji Club of Victoria for some years, and then joined the Basenji Club of New South Wales shortly after its inception in 1968.

Petersen with Ch Nailah Facing The Firebird, and Group Judge Alan Hunt NSW at the presentation of the Dot Oestreich BIS trophy for the inaugural BBNQ Championship show Durack 2015.
Life handed Dot a hard road to follow with successive personal losses, beginning with the
passing of her son Karl, daughter Marilyn, her ex husband Clyde, and her close friend Sheila Corbett who died in a tragic accident. The dog world kept Dot going.
Dot took her dog club membership seriously, using every opportunity to support the Basenji Club of NSW. She donated trophies to the Club for their Easter Ribbon Parades, and she also donated her Makala trophies for their championship shows in the memory of her late children Karl and Marilyn.
Whenever possible, Dot made the long trek to Sydney to participate at Sydney Royals, PAL Internationals, Spring Fairs and Championship Shows. Dot was successful at the Sydney Royal winning Challenge Dog 1976 and 1977. Also Challenge Bitch in 1974, 1975, and Challenge Bitch and Best of Breed in 1979 and 1980.

She also participated at the Basenji Club of NSW specialities winning Dog Challenge in 1976, and Dog Challenge and Best In Show in 1978 with Champion Makala Eagle Hawk. In 1985 she won Reserve Bitch under the prestigious judge Miss Damara Bolte (USA) at the 1st Australian National Basenji Championship Show. Dot served as Patroness of the Basenji Club of NSW circa 1993.
In Queensland Dot won Challenge Dog at the Brisbane Royal in 1970, 1992, and Best of Breed in 1984, Bitch Challenge in 1973 and 1982. Ch. Makala Eagle Hawk was the first Basenji to win a Best in Show (BIS) in the metropolitan area in 1976
at Sunshine Coast All Breeds Kennel Club and in 1977 at Beenleigh Kennel. Dot’s Basenjis won many other awards in Group and BIS over the years.
Later in Queensland she co bred with Angela Brown and had great success with Gr Ch. Sudanka Dream Machine aka as Sonny. Dot and Sonny were a great team. Dot’s enthusiasm and knowledge of Basenjis led her to present Basenji breed lectures for Dogs Queensland (DQ) aspiring judges. Dot continued to do breed lectures for 20 years.

Dot joined the DQ breed social club Basenji Hound Association Queensland (BHAQ) in 1992. Then many years later she held the position of Patroness for the breed club, Basenji Breed Network Queensland (BBNQ) established in 2013 as a social club, and later in 2015 BBNQ held its first Open and Championship Specialities on 27 and 28 November 2015. Dot’s legacy to BBNQ is the Dot Oestreich Best in Show trophy, which was first presented at the BBNQ championship show in 2015.
There are a lot of charming anecdotes that have been shared about Dot.
During those years it had been said that no one could stack a Basenji like Dot. Given Dot and her daughter Marilyn’s success in the show ring this comment would not be challenged. Both mother and daughter were excellent handlers.
Anyone could approach Dot and question her on the breed she loved. This is what Dot had to say on type and movement of a Basenji. A person who was new to showing Basenjis asked Dot what is more important, type or movement for a Basenji. Dot’s opinion on this was that a Basenji needs to have a good breed type, because otherwise all you have is a dog with good movement. She also often told the story that she learnt from her grandfather who bred champion cattle. Her grandfather use to say, you only need one good bull in your paddock. But Dot said for dog breeding Bitch is King. Keep more excellent bitches in your yard than dogs.

Breed Network Queensland 2013 – 2015.
Angela Brown related a story about Dot when she was awarded Canine Control Council Queensland (CCCQ) Life Membership in 2000. Lt. Colonel Ray Underwood president of the CCCQ asked Angela to make sure Dot was in the dog pavilion at lunch break as he was going to award her Life Membership. Well Angela got an endless interrogation from Dot as to why they had to go back to the pavilion. Angela said to Dot that Ray needs your help in the ring. After Dot was presented with a Life Membership badge she was speechless, and for those who knew Dot, it wasn’t often she was speechless.
In Queensland Dot held committee member positions in the Hound Club of QLD, Patroness of the Beagle Club of QLD, Committee member and Vice President of the Maree Kennel Club, Vice President of the Brisbane Ladies Kennel Club, and a committee member of the CCCQ, and one of her final official positions was Patroness of Basenji
In later years Dot became very involved in Lure Coursing with her Basenjis Bobi and Edge. Edge was the last Basenji that lived with Dot as a companion.
Dot was a very strong woman who loved her Basenjis and loved the dog world. She will be remembered for showcasing and establishing recognition for the Basenji Breed in Queensland.
Dot may you rest in peace in that green paradise you dreamed of for your Basenjis.
