025 is coming to a close. It seems to have gone so fast!!!! So many changes and innovations. If our dog world is to continue to survive, we need to keep moving forward with new ideas. I think now is a good opportunity to dispel some common misunderstandings surrounding our organisation and how things work. A bit of a “fact vs fiction” information. There is a distinct difference between Board members and Staff members.

Our Queensland Representative, Samantha Page, did our State proud by being the overall Runner up National Junior Handler for 2025!!! Huge congratulations to Samantha and her gorgeous Australian Shepherd Twix, and her family and supporters, on such a wonderful achievement!!!

There seems to be a misunderstanding between these roles. Board members are elected by the members of Dogs Queensland. Staff members are appointed via the normal recruitment process. Board members do NOT receive wages, staff do. Board members are able to claim reimbursement for outlays in some circumstances, but a majority do not claim expenses and give of their time and expertise freely. We do not “work out of the Durack office”. We do attend meetings and functions at Durack. The Board members do not “approve or disapprove” breaches decisions. For the most part, the Breaches process is independent from the Board. The Board is the only entity that can terminate membership. Therefore the Board will oversee the most serious of offences which may result in termination of membership. All appeals in relation to suspension and termination of membership are reviewed by a separate independent “Appeal Panel”. These appeals are not heard by the Board of Directors. The Board does review Aggressive Dog appeals. Each appeal is considered carefully to ensure a fair outcome is delivered for all concerned. All these processes are listed in the Dogs Queensland Constitution and Dogs Queensland Rules. I hope this brief explanation helps give

Board Notes – December 2025 /January 2026 DOG, PUPPY & NEUTER OF THE YEAR IN ZONE 2 & 3 IS COMING BACK!

Committee (CJC) to conduct additional Mentored Shows during 2026.

Expressions of Interest (EOI) are sought from Clubs in Zone 2 and Zone 3 (Z2 & Z3) to conduct a Dog, Puppy and Neuter of the Year event in late 2026.

Following detailed discussion, the Board resolved by majority to grant a dispensation to the current rules, allowing the CJC to hold eight (8) mentored shows in 2026. This approval applies for training and educational purposes only and will operate as a trial program to be reviewed in August 2026.

It would be preferrable to conduct this towards the end of the show season in each zone, thus allowing as many winners in each category to compete for the year’s title … or held at the beginning of the new year, so that the winners can then fast track to the overall Dog, Puppy and Neuter of the Year finals in Brisbane in early February. These events are not to take away from any canine competing from any zone in the overall finals night in Brisbane in February, but rather to showcase the local zone achievements and celebrate our successes together. The event could be held in conjunction with shows or as a stand-alone event … that is up to the club in the zone to consider or even make it a Christmas get-together and celebration for the end of the year. Watch this space for the rules and qualifications to compete, but at this stage, interest is sought from clubs to hold the event with assistance from the Dogs Queensland Events Committee which will be discussed more in full with those clubs that wish to place an EOI. In the first instance, clubs are requested to write to Dogs Queensland stating their interest with a location, preferred date, if being held with shows or as a stand-alone event, a proposed budget and what assistance they may request from the Events Committee. The aim of these additional shows is to: • Provide enhanced Judge's training and mentoring opportunities for Trainee Judges; • Strengthen breed knowledge and judging skills; • Improve the overall quality and consistency of conformation judging in Queensland. How the CJC Mentored Shows Will Operate Each mentored show will run like a normal Championship Show. However, the Open Show Judge will be in the ring with the Championship Show Judge and will receive hands-on mentoring throughout the judging process. Exhibitors will enter under the Championship Show Judge, who will make all final decisions. The Open Show Judge will also judge all dogs and be asked questions about the exhibits as part of the mentoring process. To ensure sufficient time for quality mentoring: • Entries will be capped at 50 dogs per Group; • Entry fees will be reduced, offering exhibitors a more affordable opportunity to support Judge's training. This new initiative will allow Trainee Judges to gain valuable practical experience under direct supervision, while maintaining the formality and standards of a Championship Show.

The first mentored shows are scheduled for Saturday 10 January (2 Shows), and Saturday 17 January (2 Shows), both commencing in the evening. Further details, including venues and remaining show dates, will be announced shortly.

Dogs Australia's email of 5 August 2025 confirmed the release of the breed survey for the Affenpinscher via Vero Voting. Please note in accordance with the decision made at the October 2025 Board meeting (Item 6.3.4), the results of this survey will not be endorsed and have been sent to the National Breed Standards Coordination Group together with the history on the survey requesting the Group’s recommendation. ISSUING OF THE RALLY GRAND CHAMPION TITLE (R GD CH) – EFFECTIVE FROM 1 JANUARY 2026

* Regulations Part 2 – Judges, Clause 3.7 It was resolved that Regulations Part 2 – Judges, Clause 3.7 be amended as follows: Currently reads: 3.7 Only All Breeds Judges shall judge General Specials at All Breed Championship Shows. (Amended 10/13 – 5.6.4) Amend to read: 3.7 All Breeds Judges or Judges with a minimum of 6 Groups at Championship Level may judge General Specials at All Breeds Championship Shows. Those Judges that are not all Breeds Judges must also be currently listed as a Trainee Judge within their State This amendment is effective from 1 January 2026.

* Regulations Part 3 – Judges Training & Examination Program, Clause 7.2 It was resolved that Regulations Part 3 – Judges Training & Examination Program, Clause 7.2 be amended as follows: Currently reads: 7.2 Unless otherwise determined, at the discretion of the Member Body, a practical examination for a single breed license shall consist of one (1) class of a minimum of five (5) dogs over the age of six (6) months, and one (1) class of a minimum of five (5) bitches over the age of six (6) months, and the Trainee Judge will be required to place the classes and select a Best of Breed and a Runner Up to Best of Breed. The Trainee must not be examined on dogs they own or co-own. Amend to read: 7.2 Unless otherwise determined, at the discretion of the Member Body, a practical examination for a single breed license shall consist of one (1) class of a minimum of five (5) dogs over the age of six (6) months, and one (1) class of a minimum of five (5) bitches over the age of six (6) months, and the Trainee Judge will be required to place the classes and select a Best of Breed and a Runner Up to Best of Breed. * Regulations Part 3 – Judges Training & Examination Program, Clause 9.8 It was resolved that Regulations Part 3 – Judges Training & Examination Program, Clause 9.8 be amended as follows: Currently the clause reads: 9.8 All Theory Examinations, once passed, are held for life. Amend Clause 9.8 to read: 9.8 All Theory Examinations, once passed, are valid for a period of five (5) years. If a candidate has not attempted to advance to Championship Show level within this time, the examination must be re-sat to ensure continued competency. This amendment is effective from the start of the commencement of each Member Bodies Judges Training Scheme in 2027.

* Regulations Part 3E(a) – Regulations for the Conduct of Tracking Trial Judges Training Scheme It was resolved that Regulations Part 3E(a) – Regulations for the Conduct of Tracking Trial Judges Training Scheme, Clause 8 – Practical Assessment be amended as follows: Currently the rule reads: 8. Practical Assessment 8.2.1 Trainees are required to judge a minimum of 2 dogs. 8.2.1.1 One (1) will be a Tracking Dog Excellent test level and one (1) will be a Tracking Champion test level. Amend the rule to read 8. Practical Assessment 8.2.1 Trainees are required to judge a minimum of 2 dogs. 8.2.1.1 One (1) will be a Tracking Dog Excellent test level and one (1) will be a Tracking Grand Champion test level. This amendment is effective from 1 January 2026.

* Regulations Part 5 – Conformation Show, Clause 2.7.3 It was resolved that Regulations Part 5 – Conformation Show, Clause 2.7.3 be amended as follows: Currently reads: Ramp Breeds 2.7.3 A judge requesting the use of a ramp must give notice to the show representative/show manager prior to judging. Dogs Australia/ member body approval is not required. Designated ramp breeds may be examined on the ground (table if applicable) or on a ramp during breed judging at the sole discretion of the judge and not the exhibitor. The entire entry in that breed is to be examined on the ground (table if applicable) or on a ramp. The ramp will be available at the discretion of the judge for all ramp optional breeds through all levels of competition including group and Best in Show judging. * Regulations Part 5 – Conformation Show – New Clause 9.10 - FCI World Challenge for Top Dogs It was resolved that Regulations Part 5 – Conformation Shows be amended with the addition of new Clause 9.10 for the selection of the Australian representative at the FCI World Challenge for Top Dogs. The new regulations to read as follows: 9.10 Rules for the Selection of the FCI World Challenge Top Dog (Added 10/25, 5.18 – Effective 01/01/26) 9.10.1

Listed below are the rules for the selection of the dog to represent Australia at the FCI World Challenge Top Dog.

9.10.1.1 All dogs competing in a FCI CACIB event in Australia will automatically be entered in the point score. 9.10.1.2 Only FCI CACIB events shall be included in the point score. 9.10.1.3 The point score will run from any FCI CACIB show commencing on or after 01 January and will finish with any show commencing on 31 December of that year. 9.10.1.4 Points will be awarded as follows and shall not be accumulated at any 1 show: a. b. c. d.

9.10.1.5 The dog with the highest points at the end of the period will be declared the Top Dog and will be invited to represent Australia at the FCI World Challenge for Top Dogs the following year. 9.10.1.6 Should there be a tie for the Top Dog then the winner will be decided on a count back as follows: a. b. c. d.

The number of Best in Show, then; The number of Runner up in Show, then; The number of Best in Group, finally; and The number of Runner Best in Group.

9.10.1.7 Should the successful dog not elect to represent Australia then the invitation will be bestowed on the next dog on the list down to placing number 5. Should none of the placegetters down to 5 accept the invitation then Australia would not have a representative. 9.10.1.8 All the expenses related to the dog and owner’s travel and accommodation, are under the responsibility of the relevant owner(s). Effective from 1 January 2026. 8.

* Regulations Part 5 – Conformation Show, Clause 9A.2.1 It was resolved that Regulations Part 5 – Conformation Show, Clause 9A.2.1 be amended as follows: Currently reads: 9A.2.1 A maximum of four A2O shows may be held by each Member (each State or Territory) in a calendar year. Amend to read: 9A.2.1 A maximum of six A2O shows may be held by each Member (each State or Territory) in a calendar year. This amendment is effective from 1 January 2026.

* Dogs Australia Judges Contract It was resolved that effective immediately page 4 (Judging Declaration for Additional Breeds) of the current Dogs Australia Judges Contract be removed.

* Spanish Water Dog – Recognition as a breed for Herding It was resolved that the Spanish Water Dog be permitted to participate in Herding Trials. Effective from 1 January 2026.

Registration of Kennel Names with FCI It was resolved that all members be advised they must register their kennel name with the FCI in accordance with our agreement with the FCI. Dogs Queensland Puppy of the Year Rules 2025 RULES FOR THE CONDUCT OF QUEENSLAND PUPPY OF THE YEAR COMPETITION IN 2025 GENERAL RULES

1. The Queensland Puppy of the Year Competition will be

sponsored, promoted and run by Dogs Queensland, commencing on Wednesday, 1st January 2025 and ending on Wednesday, 31st December 2025. 2. The Puppy of the Year Final will be judged on Friday evening, 6th February 2026. 3. In the event that a cash prize is awarded for the Competition, the prize will be awarded in the name of the Queensland resident owner/s of the winning exhibit. Where an exhibit is held in joint ownership with a current financial member of the ANKC, that member must be financial as of 1st December 2025 up to and including 6th February 2026. 4. Finalists in the competition will receive a memento from the Events Committee. 5. Catalogues for the Competition will be available for a fee. 6. The Committee is authorised to take steps to verify the eligibility of Competition finalists. Should an exhibitor or exhibit not meet all the specific criteria for eligibility, the exhibit in question will not be permitted to compete in the Competition Final. 7. The Events Committee reserves the right to alter any Competition rules should it be deemed necessary. 8. The Dogs Queensland Board of Directors is the final arbiter of disputed issues in respect to this Competition and exhibitors acknowledge that, by entering this Competition, they agree to be bound by the Rules and they further agree to indemnify Dogs Queensland against all claims arising from any actions associated with this Competition. ELIGIBILITY TO COMPETE In order to qualify for Dog of the Year, the exhibit must reside in the State of Queensland from 1st January 2025 or born during 2025 and reside in the State of Queensland and must remain resident in the State until the Competition date, 6th February 2026. The exhibit must be registered to a Dogs Queensland member either solely or in partnership during this period (General Rules 3). To reside means to physically live at the address on the Certificate of Registration. The term ‘exhibitor’ means owner/s, as recorded on the Certificate of Registration. INELIGIBILITY TO COMPETE All Events Committee Members and any other individual closely involved with the Competition or closely associated with persons involved with the Competition shall be excluded from entering at the discretion of the Events Committee. Sponsors are eligible to enter at the discretion of the Events Committee. The decision if any person and/or exhibit should be excluded is to be decided upon the facts of each case with the final arbiter being the Events Committee.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS The following eligibility requirements must be adhered to: 1. If an entrant has ownership transferred during the Competition period, its results remain valid if the ownership of the dog remains valid (Refer to Eligibility to Compete) and providing the exhibit continues to reside in Queensland. 2. Any exhibit leased/transferred out of Queensland during the Competition period, or any exhibitor who moves Interstate or Overseas during the Competition period, automatically loses all entitlements to compete in the Competition. 3. All fees paid by an Exhibitor to enter in the Competition (including fees paid by an Exhibitor who falls under General Requirements 2), will not be refunded. 4. Any exhibitor who transfers to Queensland, permanently, from another Country / State will be eligible to compete: (i) providing they join and/or hold current membership of Dogs Queensland: a) at their permanent address in Queensland; and b) during the eligibility period and is prior to and includes the end date of the eligibility period (Refer to General Rules 1). (ii) providing the exhibit is transferred to that Queensland address and resides there, referred to in (i), for the majority of the eligibility period (majority referring to more than half of the time of the eligibility period).

QUALIFICATION FOR ENTRY AS A FINALIST

1. For the Puppy of the Year Competition an exhibit over

the age of 6 (six) months is required to be awarded a minimum of 1 (one) Best Minor Puppy or Puppy in Show at any All Breeds Championship Show, Agricultural Show, Group / Multi Breed Championship Show where a Best Minor Puppy or Puppy in Show is awarded, or a Breed / Multi Breed Specialty Championship Show held in Queensland during the qualifying period (Refer General Rules 1). 2. To enter the Final, exhibitors will register their exhibit for a fee of $50 per exhibit through Show Manager prior to the advertised closing date, 14th January 2026. 3. All rules under the General Rules apply. 4. For cataloguing purposes, the following is required of the qualifying exhibit by 14th January 2026: (i) Photocopy of the Exhibits registration to be emailed to the Events Committee (ii) Owners Name (iii) Breed of exhibit (iv) Date of birth of exhibit (v) Name and date of the qualifying show. – Raelene Campbell There is something very endearing about an Irish Terrier. They have a naturally cheeky outlook on life and enjoy human attention. When you step out with an Irish Terrier on your lead, people often watch them intently, smile at their antics, and some eventually ask “What breed is your dog?”. As a rare heritage breed, here in Australia and internationally, it is not often that someone recognises that the bearded, fiery red dog on your lead is actually an Irish Terrier. However, for those that do, they are so delighted to meet another and typically reminisce warmly about the dogs they have owned or met previously. Many times, I am told they are the most underrated breed or that it’s a pity they are not more popular. Perhaps being a breed that are known to be a lively dog with plenty of pluck and daring puts people off. However, these are dogs that are devoted to their people, that look deep into your soul (especially if you have a tasty morsel) and love fiercely. They have character, energy and enthusiasm, but equally love a chance to curl up beside you on the couch and snooze the day away – at least until they need to go bark at a possible intrusion.

repellent coat. Regular stripping means they rarely (if ever) need bathing. As adults their coats should be largely uniform in colour, but individual dogs can vary in shade, from a dark red through to a more gold-wheaten colouring. That is not to say that each hair shaft is a single colour. As the coat grows and lengthens, the colour also changes. Some puppy buyers will choose to have their dogs’ coats clipped off. However, this will soften the coat and often results in the coat lightening in colour. Dogs that are being shown are regularly stripped to create what is referred to as a ‘rolled’ coat (essentially, many layers of coat growing through at different shorter lengths). Pets who are stripped less frequently, will be shaggier in appearance, and need only to be stripped back two to three times a year. As a medium sized, long-legged terrier, Irish Terriers should stand 46cm (18 inches) tall at the shoulder, and weigh between 11 and 15kg. Males

APPEARANCE, SIZE & CHARACTER Irish Terriers are a wiry-coated, medium-sized dog known for its red, gold, or wheaten coat, their beards and perky V-shaped ears. Some have a small white patch on their chests, which is entirely acceptable, and for some a desired feature. At birth, Irish Terrier puppies have soft black or darkcoloured coats – making them look just about as delicious as a packet of dark chocolate caramel Tim Tams. This dark puppy coat will eventually be shed and be replaced with the wiry, red-toned adult coat. Their faces at birth can also be dark but again this fades out as they grow. Adults have a coarse coat that is dense and wiry in texture, with a softer undercoat that lies flat. Irish Terrier coats are considered to be hypo-allergenic (meaning low allergy, not no allergy) and may suit some who have allergies to dog hair. Irish Terriers don’t shed a lot as their coats are maintained by pulling or stripping the hair (ie. not clipping or cutting it). Pulling the older coat out helps them maintain good skin condition and creates a water-

may be a little taller, and bitches slightly smaller, but the ideal is 46cm. Irish Terriers should have a racy outline and appear light on their feet. Historically, Irish Terriers were bred as a farmer’s companion. Their size reflects their purpose – that of an ‘all-purpose terrier’ that was sturdy and strong enough to ‘protect the potato patch’ but unlikely to eat you out of house and home. If they were hurt in the field, they needed to be a size that could be carried home for care. They also needed to be swift enough to catch small game, but to be a good-sized family dog that was friendly and playful with children. Irish Terriers are often described as daredevils, with a heedless, reckless pluck. This is an essential part of their character, although some may be quieter in nature and some be more boisterous or ‘game’. Irish Terriers epitomise everything a terrier should be – energetic, tenacious, intelligent, and fearless, with a feisty and confident personality. They will use their sharp intelligence to think for themselves and often will try and outwit you to achieve their own ends. However, they will do this with a quick backward glance over their shoulder

at you, knowing they might not be doing what you wanted, so will act the larrikin while doing it and make you laugh. They love nothing better for you to join in on their lark and so chasing them at this point can cement a lesson you’d rather they not learn (and this one they will learn with a single repetition). As stated by Edna Howard Jones, a muchrespected breeder of Irish in her time, “of their characteristics I do not think it can be too strongly emphasised that they are essentially happy-natured dogs with a great sense of humour”. They do have an uncanny knack of appearing to smile at you, which if they are engaged in some mischief, makes it very hard to stay annoyed with them. In her book on Irish Terriers, Edna also says “anyone in need of a psychiatrist would do well to purchase an Irish Terrier without delay – they are so in sympathy with all our moods”. Personally, I don’t ever want to be without one. Once you have had an Irish Terrier, the breed will own your heart. HISTORY OF THE BREED The Irish Terrier is considered one of the oldest

existing terrier breeds. Unfortunately, the early origins of the breed are largely unknown. Evidence points to Irish Terriers having descended from the black and tan terriers of Britain and Ireland, much like the Welsh and Scottish Terrier. As stated, these small, red, rough-coated terriers were bred for purpose and formed an essential part of life for humbler Irish families living precariously off a few acres of land. Over time they have been described as the ‘poor man’s sentinel, the ‘farmer’s friend’, and later the ‘gentleman’s favourite’. The Dublin Dog Show of 1873 was the first to provide a separate class for Irish Terriers. While there was considerable variation in size and colour of the dogs presented back in the day, the unifying features were their wiry, water-resistant coats, their length of body (their outline being more rectangular than square), and their characteristic ‘bonny, sensitive and courageous temperaments’. By 1879 the first Irish Terrier Club had formed, and a breed standard published, although it is accepted that the breed existed well before this (at least 50 years). Irish Terriers grew in popularity

briefly after this and served a prominent role in the trenches during the first World War – ratting, acting as sentries, guarding/patrolling, and reportedly endeared themselves to the soldiers for their sheer conviviality. As messengers, there are mixed reports on their usefulness, as being a social creature, they were prone to stopping for a ‘chat’ while out on a mission. There are letters from the war that tell a story of a wife writing to her husband to share sad news that their Irish had gone missing after he left, and his letters to her sharing that their Irish (who had travelled hundreds of miles to find him) was safe and now serving beside him. Following the second World War, with increasing urbanisation and more exotic dog breeds coming into popularity, Irish Terriers soon became a rarer breed. They are now considered a vulnerable breed, due to small number of litters raised each year. Often people make a connection between an Irish Terrier and the dog featured in the Disney story of ‘Lady and the Tramp’. While the Tramp in the story was likely a mixed breed terrier, it

is reported that the illustrations for the film’s animations were drawn with an Irish Terrier as a model, although the coat was greyed and mottled a little to make him more tramp-like. HEALTH Irish Terriers are a generally healthy breed for whom there are few known issues. A major historical issue in the breed was Hereditary Footpad Hyperkeratosis, a disease that causes thorny, painful cracked pads of the feet. However, this has largely been eliminated in many countries through genetic testing and careful, selective breeding. Breeders in Australia have not seen any cases of this in the lines here for 40 plus years and continue to be diligent in their genetic testing of imported dogs/semen to ensure they are not bringing in a dog who is a carrier of this disease. One issue for the breed remains that cannot be identified by genetic testing is Type III Cystinuria (causing bladder stones in male dogs). Unfortunately, decades of diligent research has not found a single gene that causes the issue (it is presumed that its inheritance is poly-genetic). Testing that is available in the UK and Europe for male dogs to identify the disease before it progresses or to assist with diagnosis does not exist

in Australia (although breeders overseas report that the reliability of those tests is not always accurate). Desexing well before the age of onset (3 years) eliminates the issue but unfortunately hampers the efforts of research scientists in tracking the genetic inheritance of Cystinuria in Irish Terriers. SUITABILITY Irish Terriers are active dogs that do best with mental stimulation, good exercise and opportunities to run off some of their restless energy. They will while away the day snoozing but generally remain watchful. They make excellent watch dogs as they are alert to anything happening in their surrounds. The arrival of the postie may spark a volley of barks but they are generally keen to greet visitors after the initial excitement. They are social dogs that love human attention. Given half a chance they will have their front paws on you, wagging their tail and saying “Adore me”. The breed standard states that Irish Terriers are sometimes “perhaps a little too ready to resent interference on the part of other dogs”. This is true, particularly of males. Therefore, they are a breed

that needs to be carefully socialised with other dogs from a young age and well into adulthood. Irish Terriers often do best in single dog households where they get to be the centre of all the attention. Some will co-habit well with other pets (like cats) if introduced carefully; however, Irish do possess a strong prey-drive so this is not a given. Irish Terriers are extremely well suited to all manner or dog sports, if you are willing to put the time into training. They will be less biddable than a working dog breed, but their enthusiasm for a ‘job’ and the energy they will bring to a sport has its own rewards. Irish Terriers can excel in many sports, like Lure Coursing, Agility, Scent Work, Tricks and Obedience – with diligent training. It would be great to see more people exhibiting and engaging in sports with Irish Terriers into the future. They are such joyful dogs and well worth the effort. F.M Jowett (a breeder of Irish in the late 1800’s) in Irish his book ‘The Irish Terrier’ says the following: “He’s very hardy, and able to stand more wet, cold and fatigue than most other terriers, and the right kind of coat is so hard and dense on the body that wet cannot penetrate it, and not being too long it does not hinder them in cover work. I know no breed

of dog that repays careful training better”. A LAST WORD ON SUITABILITY & TRAINING Lucy Jackson, a well-recognised devotee of the breed in Britain, says in her book that “…those that love dogs are divided into ‘terrier people’ and other ranks, and before buying any terrier you need to decide whether you’re ‘one of us’…”. Irish Terriers have minds of their own (which reflects the purpose they were bred for). They are not naturally obedient. Persuading them to do something is sometimes more effective than stern disapproval. They are loyal dogs that enjoy being talked to and loved as much as any other family member. They don’t like to be left out of things (but can cope on their own for extended periods of the day). You will need to see training as ongoing as they don’t really mature out of a puppy stage till they are at least 3 years old. They need space to run. Digging may need to be discouraged. High sturdy fences are also a must. It is worth thinking about what kind of life you want to live with your dog/s. If you want a quiet obedient dog that never fires up at another dog, then an Irish Terrier may not be for you. If you want a challenge, to laugh (at your own folly as much as theirs), to have a dog that is full of life and as much a part of your family as anyone else,

then seek out a breeder and meet an Irish. They are extraordinary dogs.

Australian Dog Breeders Conference: A Resounding Success

The Australian Dog Breeders Conference was held at Sea World on the Gold Coast in October 2025 and I had the privilege of being the MC for the event. The conference brought together breeders, veterinarians, geneticists, behaviourists, and welfare professionals from across Australia to share knowledge, challenge ideas, and celebrate the future of ethical dog breeding. It was great to see Dogs Queensland Members in attendance to expand their knowledge and make connections to the dog breeding community. From the opening address to the closing applause, the atmosphere was charged with passion, collaboration, and purpose. Over two

days, delegates explored a diverse range of topics spanning genetics, reproduction, welfare, behaviour, and breeder wellbeing — all centred on the theme of “Preserving Purpose, Advancing Welfare.” The program featured an impressive line-up of speakers, including: • Kerry Nichols – sharing insights into early development and enrichment for puppies. •

Dr Xavier Schneider – presenting the latest research in reproductive health and neonatal care.

One of the strongest recurring themes was collaboration – between breeders, veterinarians, welfare advocates, and policy bodies – to ensure that animal welfare and breed preservation continue side by side.

With overwhelmingly positive feedback, planning is already underway for next year’s conference, which promises to build on this momentum with interactive workshops, expert panels, and practical takeaways for breeders at every level of experience. The Australian Dog Breeders Conference proved that when passion meets professionalism, the results speak for themselves. It was more than an event — it was a reaffirmation of why ethical breeding matters, and how united effort can shape a stronger, healthier, and more sustainable future for our dogs. We hope to see you there next year.

After all, Australia is a big country, and it takes days to drive from one side of the country to the other.

But if you’re travelling with a dog, is it possible for them to also fly? What’s involved when travelling with a dog and on what flights are they allowed? And what about the new option to fly with pets in the cabin on Virgin flights? Find out more about all the options available and everything you need to know for a smooth flight. FLYING WITH PETS IN THE CABIN IN AUSTRALIA Up until recently, dogs were not allowed to fly in the cabin on flights within Australia (as well as flights to and from Australia), unless they were a recognised service dog. However, in December 2021 the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (or CASA) changed the rules so that pets can now fly in the cabin, but only if individual airlines allow it. For the first few years, none of the Australia airlines

The first airline to allow pets to fly in the cabin on domestic flights in Australia was Virgin Australia. From 16 October 2025, they are trialling pets in the cabin on selected flights, currently between Melbourne Airport and both the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast airports.

Note that it’s not a free for all for all dogs. Like when flying with a pet in the cabin in Europe, pet dogs (and cats for some routes) are restricted to a maximum weight of 8kg, including their airlineapproved carrier. They will need to stay in their carrier at all times, underneath the seat in front. To minimise disruptions, pets can only fly in certain seats on the aircraft, with a maximum number of pets allowed on a single flight. All of these seats are in economy class – it’s not possible to fly with your dog in business class. To book your pet on one of these flights, you’ll need to call up the Virgin Call Centre. An introductory fee of $149 will apply per flight. PETS IN THE CABIN ON INTERNATIONAL FLIGHTS The rule change to allow pets in the cabin in Australia didn’t only apply to domestic flights, it also applied to international flights. Unfortunately, there are biosecurity reasons that mean that pets cannot travel in the cabin on flights to Australia, at least on regular commercial flights. However, there are a small number of foreign airlines that allow pets in the cabin on flights out of Australia. FLYING WITH PETS IN THE HOLD IN AUSTRALIA While pets can fly in the cabin on some flights, on most flights in Australia and for all but the smallest dogs, the only option is to fly in the hold of airplanes, generally as cargo. This means that you need to make a booking with the freight division of the airline (or a pet transport company) and drop them off at the cargo terminal. They’re loaded along with cargo into the hold (but with extra care) and then you pick them up at the cargo terminal.

PET-FRIENDLY FLIGHTS TO TASMANIA I’ve also come across another instance where pets are allowed to travel in the cabin on domestic flights in Australia – the pet-friendly flights to Tasmania operated by Pawmobile. Since early 2021, Pawmobile has offered weekly chartered flights from Melbourne (Essendon Airport) to Devonport, along with occasional flights to Hobart. Pets fly in the cabin of the small plane, in their crates, accompanied by an experienced handler.

There is also a third way that dogs can fly, as “checked baggage”. This means that they fly in the hold but you drop them off and pick them up inside the terminal, like oversized items. This is generally not possible in Australia, except with Regional Express (REX) on selected routes.

Note however that human passengers are not accepted at this time, unless you charter the entire plane. Additionally, this is a premium service with prices higher than those for flying pets in the hold – but in return your pet is treated as a passenger, rather than luggage.

WHAT AIRLINES FLY PETS IN THE HOLD IN AUSTRALIA? When flying your dog domestically in Australia, there are three main options: Qantas (including Qantaslink), Virgin Australia and Regional Express (or REX). Jetstar, the low-cost airline operated by

Qantas, does’t allow pets to fly on its flights. This is the same as many other discount airlines overseas, like Ryanair and Easyjet. This also extends to Qantas codeshare flights operated by Jetstar.

be made through their animal transport partners or directly with Virgin Australia Cargo over the phone or through email. (There is no online option.)

There are also a number of small regional airlines that operate in Australia, often just from one airport. Check directly with the airline whether they transport pets (this is not always listed on their websites). Some of the airlines transport pets through Qantas freight or a pet transport company.

Unlike Qantas, Virgin Australia have a maximum weight limit for flying pets. This is 65kg including your dog’s crate. Additionally, depending on the aircraft operating the flight, larger crates may not be accepted on some flights. See the fleet compatibility guide.

FLYING PETS IN THE HOLD WITH QANTAS Pets are allowed to fly on most Qantas flights within Australia. On Qantas flights, pets fly through Qantas Freight, the cargo division of Qantas.

There are also some Virgin flights that can’t accept pets on board. In particular, they have a couple of A320s they seem to mainly fly within Western Australia, that don’t have the temperature control necessary for flying pets. They also only fly pets to and from the airports listed here. FLYING PETS WITH REGIONAL EXPRESS (REX) Regional Express, or REX for short, is a smaller airline that mainly operates flights from capitals and major cities to regional airports. They also fly pets within Australia. As REX does not have a freight division, they either accept pets as “checked baggage” on some flights, or require other flights to be booked either through Qantas Freight or through a pet transport company.

Note that pets may not be permitted on some Qantas flights. In particular, there may be some regional airports that don’t have the necessary facilities, or some flights may arrive or depart outside of freight terminal hours. One other issue that you may encounter if you are flying a larger dog is that some of the smaller planes cannot accommodate the larger size crates. This is unlikely to be an issue if you are flying between the state capitals, but could be the case if you are flying on a Qantaslink flight in or out of a regional area. It’s possible to make bookings directly with Qantas Freight or pets flying accompanied (on the same flight as you) or unaccompanied (such as a puppy flying to its new home). FLYING PETS IN THE HOLD WITH VIRGIN AUSTRALIA Virgin also flies pets in the hold within Australia, through their cargo division. Bookings can either

At the moment, the only pet bookings that can be made directly with REX for carriage as “checked baggage” are regional flights within NSW and Victoria operated by Saab 340 turbo-prop aircraft. For these flights, pets are dropped off at the checkin in their crate and they fly as excess baggage, similar to flying a golf bag. However, like for all excess baggage, there is a size limit, otherwise your pet must fly as freight. The maximum crate size is restricted to 85cm high x 77cm wide x 131cm long. (And crates often need to be larger than you expect, to meet the IATA guidelines.) Excess baggage also generally has a weight limit of 32kg. For regional flights in South Australia and Western Australia, you will need to book and lodge your pet with Qantas Freight. This is because both Adelaide and Perth Airports don’t allow animals other than assistance dogs in the terminal. For regional flights in Queensland, dogs are similarly not allowed in the terminals of Brisbane,

Cairns and Townsville Airports. For pets flying on these flights, you need to book and lodge your pet with Dogtainers, a pet transport company.

FLYING DANGEROUS AND STRONG DOG BREEDS There are a short list of dangerous dog breeds, which are prohibited from being imported into Australia, and are also not allowed to fly at all in Australia (if they are already in the country): • Fila Brasilerio • Japanese Tosa • Dogo Argentino • American Pit Bull and other Pit Bull Breeds • Perro de Presa Canario Other strong dog breeds are permitted to travel as long as they travel in a special non-plastic crates, such as the CR-82 crate or an airline approved guard dog cage. Qantas singles out American Staffordshire Terriers as requiring these crates. Qantas also doesn’t fly active racing greyhounds, although retired greyhounds can be transported with special conditions. FLYING SNUB-NOSED OR BRACHYCEPHALIC BREEDS The second main category with special caveats for flying in the hold are snub-nosed or brachycephalic breeds, as these breeds are more likely to experience breathing difficulties and heat stress. Some overseas airlines forbid these breeds from flying in the hold, but both Virgin Australia and Qantas permit them to fly, subject to extra conditions. (REX does not permit brachycephalic breeds to fly.) With both Qantas and Virgin Australia, short-nosed breeds can only be booked through an approved pet transport company. The transport companies are aware of the additional regulations that may apply, including being restricted to early morning or evening flights, plus larger crate requirements. Both Qantas and Virgin have their own list of the

affected breeds. Check the airline specific list. You may need to sign extra forms to fly brachycephalic breeds or cross-breads. FLYING LARGE DOGS If your dog is large, whether in height or weight, they may have additional limitations. For starters pets over 65kg cannot be booked with Virgin Australia. There are also restrictions on the maximum size crates accommodated by different Virgin aircraft. With online bookings through Qantas, the maximum size crate you can book online is 131cm x 77cm x 85cm (an Extra Large PP90 crate). If the combined weight of your pet and crate exceeds 50kg, Qantas recommends calling up to confirm compatibility of your crate and aircraft type. For pets flying as excess baggage on Rex flights, there is a maximum crate size of 85cm x 77cm x 131cm. Excess baggage also generally has a weight limit of 32kg. FLYING PUPPIES AND SENIOR DOGS Qantas will not fly puppies under the age of 12 weeks, due to the risk of dehydration. For Virgin Australia the cut-off is 8 weeks, with puppies between 8 and 12 weeks requiring a vet health certificate. A vet health certificate is also usually required for pets over 12 years old. BOOKING YOUR PET TO FLY IN THE HOLD IN AUSTRALIA If you’re flying together with your pet, it’s best to book their flight before making your own flights. There are two main reasons for this: the number of pets that can be accommodated on most flights

are limited (sometimes only one or two on smaller planes), plus as detailed above there are some occasions where pets are not permitted at all (such as specific planes, airports and hours of the day). Cancellation and change conditions are also usually quite generous for pet bookings, compared to many human bookings. Bookings through Qantas can be cancelled online up to 24 hours in advance with no penalty. Additionally, there is no variation in the cost of flying pets, even if you are booking last minute. Note that before you book your pet, you will need to know the size of the crate and the combined weight, as this is used to determine if your pet will fit on the flight plus their ticket cost. BOOKING PETS TO FLY WITH QANTAS Qantas is the easiest airline to make a booking for your pet, thanks to their online booking portal, as long as your pet plus their crate is no larger than 131cm x 77cm x 85cm (and doesn’t weight more than 50kg combined), and you don’t have a snubnosed pet. When I’ve flown with Qantas and my dog in the past, after booking our dog’s flight online, we then booked our own tickets online on the regular booking site. Currently, you can only make bookings on the Qantas online booking portal up to around three months out. BOOKING PETS TO FLY WITH VIRGIN AUSTRALIA With Virgin Australia, there are two options available to make a booking. Firstly, you can book directly with the Virgin Australia Cargo team, either by phone (13 82 87) or by sending an email to cargo@virginaustralia.com. Alternatively, you can book through one of their pet transport partners. When I booked with Virgin back in 2019, I made a booking through their main call centre. We booked both our own tickets and our pet’s flight together on the same call, without the usual charge for booking through a call centre. I believe you now need to book separately. BOOKING PETS TO FLY WITH REX If flying with REX and your pet is flying as excess baggage, call up the call centre (13 17 13). There is no option to add pets to your booking online and

it’s not clear if advanced bookings are required, but it’s best to at least call and check there is room for your pet on your preferred flight. For flights outside of NSW and Victoria, bookings are required to be made in advance through either Qantas Freight or Dogtainers. COST OF FLYING YOUR PET IN THE HOLD IN AUSTRALIA Just as the cost of your own ticket varies depending on how much baggage your choose to purchase, the cost of flying a pet in Australia varies depending on the size or weight of your pet, or more accurately, the size of their crate or the combined weight of your pet and their crate. Additionally, if your pet is flying unaccompanied (you are not on the same flight), the rate is typically higher. In recent years, the cost to fly with pets within Australia have substantially increased. This is particularly the case if you need to make a booking through a pet transport company, who typically charge a premium (though may include extra services such as pick-up and delivery). COST TO FLY PETS WITH QANTAS With Qantas, the cost to fly a pet is based on their crate size. The cheapest fares are for pets in a XS crate no larger than 57 x 37 x 37 cm. The most expensive fares are for pet in an XL crate up to 131 x 77 x 85 cm. When we flew our dog with us from Adelaide to Sydney in late 2019, his crate fit in the current S category, the second smallest size. His ticket was $137.50, compared to about $140 each for our tickets. However, as of October 2025, the latest price for a similar flight is $265.32, almost double the price from six years ago. COST TO FLY PETS WITH VIRGIN AUSTRALIA With Virgin Australia, the ticket price is based on the combined weight of your pet and their crate. Previously the smallest weight category was 1 to 10kg, followed by 11 to 20kg, etc. When we flew our dog with us from Sydney to Melbourne in late 2019, the total weight was around 10kg. Our dog’s ticket was $95, compared to our tickets which were $117 each.

At the moment, Virgin doesn’t list the prices to book dogs to fly in the hold. However, they have likely increased, similarly to flying dogs with Qantas. COST TO FLY PETS WITH REX With REX, if your pet is flying as excess baggage, the price of flying your pet is based on the combined weight of your pet and their crate. The fee charged is the regular excess baggage charge, which has been $5.50 per kilo for years. So, if you are flying a small 5kg pet in a 5kg crate, the charge will be $55.00. Rates for pets flying as cargo with REX likely differ. BUYING A FLIGHT CRATE FOR YOUR DOG The biggest step to prepare your pet for their flight in the hold is choosing a crate. As I mentioned above, you need to find out the size crate your pet will fly in, plus often its weight, before booking your pet on their flight. CRATE REQUIREMENTS There are international guidelines on what size crate your animal should fly in when flying in the hold. To determine the ideal size, check out this handy guide on the Qantas website. There is also a similar guide on the Virgin website. However, I also feel it is best to test out the size of a crate in person, before making the final decision. The guidelines stipulate that there needs to be enough room for your dog to stand, sit and turn around in the crate. BUYING OR HIRING A CRATE For this reason, it’s best to visit a large pet store with crates out on display, along with your dog. Qantas also have crates for purchase from selected domestic terminals, that they recommend picking up a few days in advance. The other alternative to purchasing a crate, especially if you’re just flying a single time with your dog, is to hire a crate. This is possible through some of the pet transport companies that operate in Australia (but only for domestic, not international, flights). It is also possible to purchase a pet crate from these companies. FAMILIARISING YOUR DOG WITH THEIR CRATE As soon as you get a crate for your dog, familiarise them with the crate. Ideally, they will have been 42

crate trained while a puppy, even if they are now flying in a different crate. Our dog Schnitzel was readily comfortable in his flight crate for this reason. Encourage them to spend time in their crate, including sleeping. One of the best training methods is to put their bowl at mealtimes in their crate. PREPARING YOUR DOG FOR THEIR FLIGHT IN THE HOLD The biggest step to prepare your pet for their flight in the hold is to familiarise them with their crate, as mentioned above. This helps them to be comfortable in it, without stressing, while waiting for and on their flight. Other steps that you should complete on the day of your pets flight include: •

Take them for a walk, to help tire them out and increase the likelihood that they sleep on the flight.

• Only feed them a small meal or snack in the lead-up to their flight, ideally well before the flight.

•

Plus toilet them, as close to their flight at possible. I usually do this when dropping off my dog at the freight terminal – most have some nearby grass or gardens.

•

Put a water dish in their crate, that can be filled from outside – this is a requirement of air travel. Purchase this at the time you purchase their crate. Fill this up only when dropping off your pet, to minimise spillage. Or consider filling it with ice cubes, that will gradually melt during the flight.

•

Put something absorbent in their crate, such as a puppy pee-pad. I usually tape this to the bottom of the crate.

•

There are varying recommendations on whether to put anything else in your dog’s crate, but I usually like to add my dog’s favourite blanket, at the back of the crate away from the water dish.

•

On the top of your pet’s crate, attach a sheet of paper with key details: your pet’s name, your own name and contact phone number, the Airway bill number.

•

Don’t leave your pet’s collar, harness or leash attached when they are in the crate, as there is a risk these could be snagged and cause an injury (or worse) to your pet, while they are unattended in the plane’s hold. (Virgin Australia actually recommends pets wear their collar, while their leash is attached to the outside by zip-ties.)

Note that while many people consider sedating their pets, this is not recommended, unless your vet has specifically recommended it and has supplied a vet certificate (check with the airline first). The reason for this is that pets are more likely to experience breathing difficulties or other issues when they have been sedated, and actually are at greater risk. DROPPING OFF YOUR PET BEFORE THEIR FLIGHT IN THE HOLD If you are making a booking through a pet transport company, you will likely drop off your pet at the transport company’s office. They can advise you on where to go, the timings required and what they require you to bring along.

Otherwise, pets flying in cargo with a direct booking, generally need to be dropped off between 120 minutes and 90 minutes before your flight is scheduled to depart, although this can vary at some airports and for early morning flights. You drop off your pet yourself at the relevant cargo office, which can be a fair distant from the passenger terminal (1km or more away), with their location varying between airport and airline. When we dropped off our pet to fly with Virgin when booking directly, we were required to already be checked-in online (and present our boarding pass), plus present the Airway bill number and the completed and printed AVI acceptance checklist (as provided with the booking confirmation). Qantas has a similar list of requirements. You need to have a copy of your pet’s booking confirmation, photo ID, the completed shipper’s statement and acknowledgement form, and your flight details (e-ticket or boarding pass), if you are flying on the same flight. When we flew with Qantas, it was okay to have the shipper’s statement on our phone, although we ended up completing the paperwork on a tablet at the terminal instead. At the freight terminal, they will generally check over your paperwork, get you to sign any extra forms and weigh your pet in their container. Cable ties and stickers will generally be attached to your pet’s crate. If your pet is flying with excess baggage with REX, the process is simpler. Instead you simply head to the regular check-in counter. However, REX does recommend that you arrive earlier than usual.

exited the Qantas domestic terminal. In contrast, at Melbourne Airport when picking up my dog after flying with Virgin I had to proceed to the Menzies Aviation building, about 1km away. I was even required to put on a high-vis vest to enter. Expect it to take at least 30-40 minutes after the flight arrives before your pet is ready for pick up. Virgin state that it can take up to 30 minutes for your pet to be ready for pick-up. Qantas advise that it generally takes about 60 minutes, and even longer at Brisbane Airport, but just 10-30 minutes at regional airports. Note that you don’t want to leave it too late after the flight’s arrival to pick up your pet. Virgin state that they will only hold your pet for 90 minutes after your flight’s arrival (and Qantas for 3 hours), after which they will contact a local pet care company (at your own expense), to minimise the period your pet spends in their crate. If you are worried about running late, have the phone number of the freight terminal where you are picking up your pet handy.

PICKING UP YOUR PET AFTER THEIR FLIGHT IN THE HOLD After your flight, for pets flying as freight and when you have made a direct booking, you pick up your pet at the freight terminal yourself. If you have booked your pet to fly through a pet transport company, check whether you will pick up your pet from their office afterwards or whether you can pick up your pet at the freight terminal yourself. If flying your pet as excess baggage with REX, you will generally claim your pet from the oversized luggage area, although check with the airport staff if uncertain. PICKING UP YOUR PET FROM A FREIGHT TERMINAL Generally, most freight terminals are at a distance from the passenger terminal, although this differs between airports and airlines. For instance, the old Qantas domestic freight building at Sydney Airport was only a few hundred metres from where you

WHAT ABOUT USING A PET TRANSPORT COMPANY? Currently, it is a requirement for flying snub-nosed pets, some large pets and on selected REX flights to book through a pet transport company. But even once this temporary policy is reversed, you may still want to consider using a pet transport company to fly your pet within Australia. There are a number of reasons why you may want to consider this, including if you are unable to pick up or drop off your pet yourself before or after their flight, or if you’d prefer someone experienced in pet transport to handle the arrangements. RULE 21 – OBLIGATION TO REGISTER 21.1

A member who breeds a litter of dogs, the parents of which are registered or eligible for registration with the CCCQ Ltd or other recognised canine controlling body must:

(1)

Register such litter, including all of the living progeny in such litter at one (1) and the same time within eighteen (18) calendar months of the date of whelping or prior to sale or rehoming (see Rule 28). No litter will be registered after twelve (12) months of age without the approval of the CCCQ Ltd;

(2) Comply with CCCQ Ltd Rules and correctly complete all forms required by the CCCQ Ltd; (3)

Pay such fees as are determined from time to time by the CCCQ Ltd. A standard fee will be set for registrations received by the office on a date within four (4) months of the date of whelping and a higher fee for registrations received by the office on a date between four (4) and six (6) months or between six (6) and twelve (12) months of the date of whelping;

Where the breeder wishes to register a puppy with the breeder’s name as part owner, an Agreement signed by the purchaser of the puppy is to be attached to the application to register the litter. Only official CCCQ Ltd Partnership Agreement forms are to be used;

(5)

Where the breeder wishes to register a puppy on the Limited Register, an Official CCCQ Ltd Limited Register Agreement statement from the purchaser stating that the implications of the Limited Register are understood is to be attached to the application; and

(6) A breeder may, at time of registration on the General Register, endorse registration ”Not to be exported”.

DOGS 10,000 YEARS AGO ROAMED WITH BANDS OF HUMANS AND CAME IN ALL SHAPES AND SIZES

Cairns, Research Fellow in Canid and Wildlife Genomics, UNSW Sydney – Melanie Fillios, Professor, Department of Archaeology and Palaeoanthropology, University of New England – Republished courtesy of The Conversation From village dogs to toy poodles to mastiffs, dogs come in an astonishing array of shapes, colours and sizes. Today there are estimated to be about 700 million dogs living with or around humans. To many of us, dogs are loyal companions, working partners, and beloved family members – and the histories of our species are deeply woven together. But how did this incredible diversity come to be – and how far back does this relationship with humans go? Two new studies published today in Science provide some answers. One, led by Allowen

Evin from the University of Montpelier, draws on ancient skeletal remains. The other, led by ShaoJie Zhang from the Kunming Institute of Zoology, draws on the study of DNA from ancient Eastern Eurasian dogs. Together, these studies suggest the story of dogs and their relationship with humans is older and more complex than once thought. THE ORIGINS OF MODERN DOG DIVERSITY The study by Evin and her colleagues used 643 dog and wolf skulls spanning the past 50,000 years to address the origins of modern dog diversity. Her team’s analysis suggests the distinctive “doglike” skull shape first arose around 11,000 years ago, during the Holocene epoch, the time since the most recent ice age. They also found substantial physical diversity in dog skulls from the same period.

TRAVELLING COMPANIONS Earlier genomic studies have uncovered four major dog lineages that likely originated about 20,000 years ago: Eastern (East Asian and Arctic) and Western (Europe and Near East) dogs. The origins of these ancient dog lineages are still being untangled. However, studying shifts in the ancestry of dogs through time and between different regions can help us better understand both the origins of dogs and the movement of Neolithic (new stone-age) humans. The new study by Zhang and his colleagues used 73 ancient dog genomes spanning the last 10,000 years to explore how humans and dogs moved across Eastern Eurasia through time.

Ameen/University of Exeter This means the wide range of shapes and sizes dogs have today isn’t solely a product of the intense selective breeding programs that became popular in the last few centuries. Some of that variation emerged millennia earlier. The team re-analysed the skull shapes of all 17 known dog or wolf skulls from the Late Pleistocene, a geological period from 129,000 to 11,700 years ago. Some skulls were 50,000 years old. They found all of these Pleistocene skulls were essentially wolf-like in shape, including some previously identified as early dogs. Importantly, this suggests that while the split between wolves and dogs likely occurred during the Pleistocene, the skull shape of early dogs didn’t start to change until closer to the Holocene – that is, 11,000 years ago. However, some Holocene dog skulls still retained wolf-like features. This research suggests early dogs were much more diverse than previously thought. This diversity may have laid the groundwork for the extreme variations in size and shape of the dogs we have today.

Analysis of these ancient dogs identified multiple shifts in the ancestry of dogs in Eastern Eurasia at times that correlate with the movement of specific human groups (hunter-gatherers, farmers and pastoralists). This suggests that as different human cultural groups moved across Eurasia, their dogs often moved with them, carrying their unique genetic signatures. There was some discrepancy between human and dog population ancestry in some parts of Asia. For example, Eastern hunter-gatherers from Veretye and Botai, who were more closely related to Western Eurasian humans, had largely Eastern (Arctic) dogs rather than the Western dogs observed with other Western Eurasian cultures at the time. This means dogs may have been a key part of cultural exchange or trade between different human cultures or communities. It may also illustrate complexities in the evolution of dogs that we are yet to understand. The work by Zhang and his team presents compelling evidence that in Eastern Eurasia thousands of years ago dogs played an indispensable role in human societies as crucial “biocultural packages” that moved with humans. In other words, humans took their companions with them on their journeys (and perhaps traded them), rather than simply acquiring new dogs after moving. These findings highlight the long-term, complex

and intertwined relationship between dogs and humans that spans more than 10,000 years.

The genetic ancestry of dogs can act as a living record of ancient human migrations, trade networks and cultural exchanges. Studies on ancient dogs may also help us understand the environmental factors that contributed to the evolution of dogs, and their relationship with humans.

Both studies underscore that the incredible diversity in modern dogs is not an entirely recent phenomenon. The genetic and morphological foundations for this variation were laid thousands of years ago, shaped by natural selection, human selection and diverse environments, long before the structured breeding of the past few centuries. Future studies investigating the physical diversity and ancestry of dogs through time could deepen our understanding of the complex origins and spread of dogs across the globe. Whatever their origins, this research deepens our appreciation for the unique and ancient bond between humans and dogs that was almost as diverse as canines themselves.

An example of a typical scam is: • A Dogs Queensland Membership number is lifted from current advertising on the internet. • The scammer researches and obtains personal details of the breeder including name, suburb, prefix. • A domain name similar to the Kennel prefix is registered on an offshore registry. • Once the breeder has ceased advertising the litter of puppies a new website is published. • No physical address or phone numbers are advertised on the website. • The seller avoids permitting you to physically see the cyber puppy and only sends non genuine pictures. • The seller insists on only accepting payment by a crypto currency or a funds transfer.

As a breeder what can you do to avoid being an unknowing victim of a Puppy Scam: •

Regularly Google search the internet for websites using a similar Domain Name as your Prefix.

• Put a warning notification in your online advertising to alert buyers to check any website they are looking at is legitimate. • Encourage puppy buyers to verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland and make direct in person contact with you. •

Ensure puppy buyers check communications are made with verified contact details.

•

Encourage puppy buyers to meet the puppy and breeder before handing over payments.

As a buyer what can you do to avoid being a victim of a Puppy Scam: •

If paying online, use a credit card or PayPal where you have a degree of buyer protection.

Dogs, Shows, Storms and Fun at Maryborough

– Katrina Santas, Show Secretary MKC Well! There certainly was action all round at Maryborough Kennel Club Inc’s four show weekend on 31 October to 2 November 2025. From those great SE storms that are becoming more common these days, at this time of year, to fun and frivolity in the adult handler competition … there was certainly no rest for the committee to keep the show in full swing.

Prior to the show, the judges enjoyed visiting some of the local highlights in Maryborough, including the Mary Poppins statue and Book Bank. If you have never been yourself, it certainly is a great visit, showcasing Mary Poppins and the birth place of PL Travers. Friday evening saw some pretty crazy storms roll through and showing was suspended immediately after sweepstakes. The later start time from previous years allowed for more exhibitors to be at the show on Friday night, but what was not planned when lodging the schedule was the storms that raised their fury on our site.

Thank you to all the exhibitors for your entries and sportsmanship through the weekend. The judges all have commented on the great shows, the exhibitor’s wonderful friendly atmosphere they create and the beautiful dogs they enjoyed judging. Congrats to the exhibitors for your sensibility in taking shelter and to the club for following the A huge congrats to all the winners, you certainly regulations and suspending the show until it was showcased your dogs under the conditions with safe to restart. There was a little water laying great resilience and true professionalism … it was around, but this did drain very quickly thanks to wonderful to see everyone smiling, congratulating great ground preparation from the committee, and the combination of competent and experienced each other and enjoying their wins.

The lunch break saw the huge 'Trash and Treasure Raffle' that is held annually by the club. Thanks to all those that donated prizes to the raffle, usually unwanted and regifted show wins, but also to the sponsors that supported the raffle with extra prizes too … there was a huge array of food and toys provided by Hervey Bay PetStock Country … many thanks. There was close to 150 prize draws and loads of laughter as people chose their winnings …. It truly was one person’s trash was another’s treasure! These fun raffles certainly do help raise funds for the club to put on a great event. stewards and judges. This ensured the show moved forward in a very timely manner and with no further hiccups. Saturday saw the possibility of the storms returning in the early evening, so the committee, together with the show manager, made the call to start the second show half hour after the conclusion of the morning show … which proved a Godsend as the heavens did open again half hour after all general specials were completed that night. It’s great to see a team work together and communicate as best as possible with the exhibitors about the changes and ensuring as many people as possible were reached with the information. Notices were placed on the MKC FB page as well as on the Z2 and DQ pages, information placed on the Show Manager page as well as the team at Show Manager emailing all exhibitors with the changes as soon as requested for assistance. Of course, there were announcements too and the committee walking through exhibitor camps to advise of the information … and in return, there was a very happy and thankful bunch of exhibitors. Thank you for working with us exhibitors and a huge thanks to all involved in managing the changes.

Now, if you weren’t having enough fun just showing your dogs and dodging the weather, there was plenty of action and more than enough antics in the adult handler competition held in the luncheon break on Saturday. This was a first for the club to try and let exhibitors have some well deserved fun as the year quickly comes to an end. The twist on this event, was the senior class of Junior Handlers came and requested if they could put the adults through their paces for a change … well, what could we say, but … YES! I have to say, I haven’t seen adults not know what a letter of the alphabet looks like before when asked to perform their tasks in the ring by the “judges”. “S’s” that looked liked a snake running through the ring, “T’s” that looked more like number 5’s and as for an “I” … including the dot … let’s just say I

This year has seen some great shows and trials conducted in our zone with many a new title awarded. The committees of all our clubs across our zone work tirelessly to ensure we have a great calendar of dog sports and shows for our locals to participate in. This work means many volunteers work ever so hard, so at this time of year, it’s a huge thank you to all those volunteers for making this a great zone to be a part of ensuring we all have a great time doing what we love best – having fun with our dogs and friends! Congratulations to the exhibitors and triallers for your support of these events and great sportsmanship … without you there are no events and your dedication to your training and breeding programs ensure we have a competitive and sound framework of healthy canines in this zone that can mix it with any in the state for top awards. Well done to those clubs for securing these shows and supporting our locals, providing them with access to those events and titles. It is hoped to have SprintDogTM trials and an Endurance test conducted in the zone in 2026. To those clubs pursuing these activities, let’s get behind them and support these when they come up later in the year. Also returning in 2026 with be a Dog, Puppy and Neuter of the Year for Zone 2 (and Zone 3) for our local dogs to not only be recognised but fast tracked through the rounds in the state finals in Brisbane – watch this space for more information to come.

New tablets for clubs to access for their shows and trials Through the support of Dogs Queensland, Zone 2 will be purchasing new tablets to use for trials and shows conducted in the zone allowing access to Show Manager for the smooth running of your on the day events. Maryborough Kennel Club Inc will be the custodian of the tablets, but for now there will not be any rental charge to access these (unless mailed to the club). It is envisaged these will be available for the start of the 2026 season. Dancing Fever in the Far North

– Tayla Arnett On the 18 October 2025, Tableland Dog Obedience Club proudly hosted the first ever Dances with Dogs Trial in the Far North. The dream of bringing the sport to our area started with one of our juniors, Mia Cavanagh, who is now successfully competing down south while studying for Uni. Mia shared her passion for the sport and shared her knowledge with other members of the club so when she moved away, the dream of bringing the sport north remained. It wasn’t an easy job to introduce a new sport, that required a panel of judges and had very few competitors currently ready to compete however after years of planning and thanks to a dedicated Tricks community, an encouraging judging panel and hardworking volunteers it went perfectly.

Saturday morning started off with some super entertaining Freestyle Starters and Novice routines followed by a couple of really clever Heelwork To Music routines. Most of the competitors had never competed in the sport before but had all done an amazing job with choreographing routines, preparing their dogs and creating beautiful costumes. We were proud to have two juniors competing in Freestyle, with the youngest competitor just 10 years old. Our three lovely judges, Marie Field, Niccola Hardaker and Coral Pethers were so helpful and encouraging and we really appreciated all their support. After a short break we backed it up with a second trial, again with some incredible performances. We hope this is the beginning of many more Dances with Dogs Trials in the North.

The excitable, golden-hearted dog owned by Penny and Aaron Parker has become famous for “announcing” his runs before flying down the track — and now he’s made history as Dogs Australia’s very first SprintDog™ Champion (SPRD.CH.). Chewie’s journey began in Lure Coursing, where he ran alongside his sister Maggie and earned his Coursing Ability Master (CAM) title in 2024. But when the brand-new sport of SprintDog™ launched on 1 July 2024, Chewie was ready for a new challenge – and he wasted no time chasing it down.

HISTORY IN THE MAKING Just one day after the sport’s debut, Chewie made headlines by earning the very first Novice SprintDog™ (N.SPRD) title in Australia on 2 July 2024 at Dogs Queensland. From that moment on, there was no stopping him. Over the next 14 months, Chewie and his devoted humans travelled thousands of kilometres, competing in 29 SprintDog™ Trials across four states – from Burdekin in North Queensland all the way to KCC Park in Skye, Victoria. By 23 September 2025, at Hillsborough, NSW, Chewie had amassed a staggering 1,536 points, officially earning his place in history as Australia’s first SprintDog™ Champion – SPRD.Ch. CHEWIE CAM.

A JOURNEY FUELLED BY LOVE (AND A LOVE OF DRIVING) “For his blissful eight-second run, you’d probably call me crazy knowing I’ve driven all the way to Victoria – a 19-hour non-stop trip one way – just for those eight seconds each run,” laughs Penny. “But every single time, I’ve driven home with the biggest grin, heart full, and ready to do it all again.” The more Chewie ran, the more he turned it into his own game. He started sidestepping Penny when she tried to catch him, testing the boundaries of the bunting, and doing everything possible to squeeze in just a few more seconds of fun.

– Kim Dawson On the weekend of 23-26 October 2025, a recordbreaking number of teams from throughout Queensland and interstate gathered at the Maleny Showgrounds on the Sunshine Coast to participate in the Dogs Queensland Scent Work State Titles competition. Although very hot on the first day of competition, the weather obligingly cooled off for the remainder of the weekend and the beautiful venue provided many novel and exciting search areas. In what was the largest Scent Work Trial held to date, judges from Queensland and Interstate officiated approximately 1300 searches across the four days of competition. Searches were conducted across all four elements – Containers, Interior, Exterior and Vehicles – and from Novice class up to Masters, and two offerings of Ultimate Class. Showcasing the high level of skill and teamwork amongst those at the highest level of competition, there were 64 entries in the Ultimate class, which is the largest entry in Australia to date. ltimate class requires teams to find an unknown number of hides and target odours between four (4) and ten (10); the search will include a minimum of three (3) elements in a search area between 200m2 and 500m2 and with search times between seven (7) and fifteen (15) minutes. Teams must ignore a variety of distractions in challenging search configurations including “blank” areas, and areas containing challenging scent puzzles within the allocated

search time. The high level of teamwork and training was on display, and consequently there were many qualifiers amongst the competitors in the fun and challenging searches set by Queensland judges Kimw Dawson and Stephanie Yoon during sweltering conditions. Many teams achieved Element Titles in Container, Interior, Exterior and Vehicle elements, in addition to Scent Work Novice, Advanced, Excellent, Master Class and Ultimate titles. Congratulations to everyone who competed over the massive weekend of Scent Work fun! Excitingly, there were four teams who qualified for the Title of Scent Work Champion title over the weekend of searching. Huge Congratulations to Natalie Kirkwood & “Torch”, Vicki Hogan & “Tilly”, Becc Johnson & “Zara” and Blanka Krotilova & “Yogi” on your success at the very highest level of our sport. TEAM CHALLENGE Wholeheartedly supported by the competitors, the extremely light-hearted “Merry People Team Challenge” provided an amazing display of inventiveness, enthusiastic teamwork and community spirit. The Team Challenge encouraged competitors to form groups with themed Team names, costumes and activities. Team scores were calculated on performance at a class and placement level, construction challenges, scavenger hunt performance, trivia quizzes, team spirit, inclusiveness, inventiveness, dedication to theme and just good old-fashioned “bribery” to the event officials. It was wonderful to see the community spirit and the way that seasoned competitors ensured newcomers to the sport were included. The very hotly contested Scent Work Subcommittee Team Challenge was won by the interstate team “FluoreSCENTs” (Team Captain Ann-Maree Best), by the narrowest of margins over the fiercely competitive “Boo Crew” and “Sniffsplorers”. A huge thank you to everyone who

participated in the Team Challenge and made the trial such an incredibly fun experience! 1st – FluoreSCENTS Team NSW 2nd – The Boo Crew 3rd – Sniffsplorers ABOUT SCENT WORK Scent Work is a sport that is based on the task of working detection dogs to locate an odour and communicate to the handler that the odour has been found. Detection is done in a variety of environments and often during changing weather or environmental conditions. Scent Work is a positive, challenging activity that allows dogs the opportunity to use their strongest natural sense in a way that is fun, engaging, and builds and strengthens a foundation of trust between the handler and dog. Dogs are trained to recognise specific odours, and to alert their handlers when the odours are detected. The dog and handler must work together as a team, using body language and verbal encouragement to ensure all sections of the search area are covered, directing the dog’s search only when necessary and indicating to the Judge when the dog has found the odour. Communication with and praise of the dog during the search are encouraged. Please note that schedule advertising must appear in the Dog World magazine 2 months prior to the event (a total of 5 months). Late schedules will appear in the following edition of DQ’s Dog World magazine. All schedules up to and including July 2026 Shows and Trials should be submitted to the Dogs Queensland office by 1 February 2026. This allows for the 3 months prior to the schedule being published in the May 2026 Dog World magazine, which is the required 2 months prior to the date of the show.
