A message from the Directors of Sport

As the Spring term concludes, we reflect with immense pride on a season defined by determination, commitment and truly outstanding performances from students across the Habs sporting community. Throughout the term, our pupils have embraced every opportunity with enthusiasm, representing the school with grit, teamwork and the unmistakable spirit of ‘Playing the Habs Way’.

Our badminton squad has continued to excel, with the U16 team delivering a superb performance to win the Regional Round of the National Schools Championships and secure their place in the National Finals this March. It has also been a remarkable term for our trampolining and gymnastics teams. The U15 Girls Novice trampolining team achieved an impressive fourth place at the National Final, while in gymnastics our U11, U13 and U19 athletes all qualified for the National Finals in the Floor and Vault competition, a testament to the depth and consistency of the programme.

A particular highlight was our first Football Tour to Valencia. Students embraced high level coaching, trained in world class facilities and enjoyed an unforgettable experience that strengthened team spirit and created memories that will last long into the future.

Our lacrosse squads have also enjoyed notable success, competing with resilience and skill in a series of highly competitive County and National fixtures. All teams finished top 25 nationally and the U14 team celebrated a fantastic achievement by finishing 1st in the Division 1 National Plate. Netball concluded a busy and successful term with a triumphant Habs 7s tournament, where our U13, U15 and U19 teams all finished in first place. Adding to an already impressive season, the U15s were crowned County Plate champions after producing a series of disciplined and confident performances.

We are always striving to be the best that we can be and expect to see excellence everywhere.

We are fiercely competitive but always play and act with respect and sportsmanship.

Focus Article- The importance of sport throughout examinations

Across Habs Elstree, we strongly encourage students to maintain a healthy balance between academic study and participation in sport. While exams are important, research consistently shows that students who stay engaged in physical activity often perform just as well or better academically.

Regular exercise supports concentration, memory and overall cognitive function, while also helping students manage pressure, maintain motivation and support their mental wellbeing during busy periods. It also develops valuable transferable skills such as resilience, teamwork, leadership and time management.

These qualities are increasingly recognised beyond school, with universities and employers valuing the discipline and commitment developed through sport.

At Habs, our own experience reflects this: students who are dedicated to sport frequently achieve excellent academic results and go on to successful pathways beyond school.

Sport is therefore not in competition with academic success, but an important part of helping students reach their full potential.

Working with London Pulse

We have further strengthened our connection with the elite game through our collaboration with London Pulse.

For the first time ever, Habs is now hosting an U13 London Pulse Netball Hub, which runs on Monday evenings. The Hub was established by Mrs Thomas-Goodchild to support the development of not only Habs players but also aspiring netballers from the local community, providing young athletes with opportunities to trial, develop their skills and progress within a high-quality training environment.
