Keynote: Stop Killing Your Best Ideas By Grant Morgan Innovation doesn’t necessarily require more money, more people, or more resources. Sometimes it just requires companies to stop getting in their own way. That was the message from Duncan Wardle, former head of innovation and creativity at Disney, during his Wednesday morning keynote, “Embed Innovation into Everyone’s DNA,” at Expo. Wardle spent 30 years at Disney, working with Disney Parks, Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm, and Imagineering. Wardle challenged the familiar corporate response to new ideas: “We don’t have the resources.” As an example, he described a pro bono project in Mumbai’s Dharavi slum, where he was tasked with finding a way to provide light to homes without electricity and without a budget. The solution came from experimenting with a plastic water bottle, sunlight, water, and chlorine. Eventually, the approach was used to provide daylight illumination to roughly 1 million huts. The lesson, he said, was curiosity.
Duncan Wardle
Children, he argued, are among the most creative people because they constantly ask questions, experiment, play, and use their imaginations. Adults, meanwhile, become increasingly constrained by experience and expertise.

Visitors to JVC’s projector gaming demonstration have the opportunity to enter for a chance to win a classic 1992–94-inspired retro Arsenal Adidas Home Jersey. The winner will be drawn on the last day of the show at 2:30 p.m. Winner does not need to be present to win.
OPEN FOR BUSINESS The CEDIA Expo Show Team cuts the ribbon with representatives from exhibiting companies: Just Video Walls, Kaleidescape, Lutron, Origin Acoustics, Paradigm, Sonos, Sony, URC, and WAC.
“The more expertise we have, the more experience we have, the more reasons we know why the new idea won’t work,” he said. “Don’t let the words ‘no, because’ be the first two words out of your mouth.” Wardle also encouraged integrators to make room for play at the right moments. When asked to identify places where they typically get their best ideas, attendees replied with locations such as the shower, gym, car, and bed. Almost nobody said they get them at work. According to Wardle, constant meetings, deadlines, and administrative tasks can prevent employees from accessing the relaxed state of mind where unexpected connections occur. For custom integrators facing rapidly changing technology, AI, and consumer expectations, Wardle’s message was that creativity shouldn’t be treated as the responsibility of a select group. Instead, companies need to make innovation accessible to everyone.

BOOTH 2923 Skyworth USA has named Performance Plus Marketing the winner of its inaugural 2026 Manufacturer’s Representative of the Year Award. This new annual award recognizes the independent manufacturer’s representative who best exemplifies leadership, sales performance, and dedication to supporting Skyworth’s dealer and integrator network across the region. “Performance Plus Marketing not only had a banner year in sales in 2026, but they went way beyond what a typical sales rep does. They bought a trailer and drove around their territory with an Michael Gleason (l) and Performance Plus 86-inch Canvas Elite, demonstrating what Skyworth can offer. That Marketing’s Jason Felix effort was like adding fuel to an already blazing fire. They symbolize what it takes to build a brand, and they richly deserve this award,” said Michael Gleason, director of sales, Skyworth USA. EXECUTIVE INSIGHT
Time to Prioritize Backyards By Anthony Savona Coastal Source is easy to spot at the Expo; they have a booth inside and are a founding and driving force behind the Destination Outdoors, which they continue to produce and host in front of the convention center. With the rise in interest in both outdoor lighting and audio, two booths are necessary to show all that can be done. Here, Coastal Source founder and CEO Franco D’Ascanio discusses the company’s exhibits and why dealers should break out into backyards. What are Coastal Source’s priorities and goals for this year’s show? FRANCO D’ASCANIO: Our priority is building on the introductions we made last year, now that those products are available and shipping. We are introducing, demoing, and displaying our 1000 Series Bollards, which bring our high-performance outdoor audio into a refined, landscape-friendly form factor, and our VIA partnership with Lutron, which is using the Ketra and Rania modules that
are custom-built specifically for our fixtures, with both the modules and fixtures designed from the ground up to work seamlessly together. VIA is an extension of Lutron’s intelligent lighting system. For people who have Ketra or Rania in their homes, the story until now has focused on intelligent interior lighting and shading. Now, that experience extends outdoors to the patio and landscape—one seamless integration, one seamless look, all working together. We are demonstrating that whole setup in our lighting tent at Destination Outdoors. Speaking of VIA, it was introduced at last year’s CEDIA Expo. What has been the feedback that you’ve gotten from it? FD: Lutron dealers have been looking for ways to extend the intelligent lighting experience they’re already delivering inside the home, and VIA gives them a natural way to bring that same experience outdoors. It also creates an additional revenue opportunity with existing customers and offers real differentiation because no other solution brings intelligent indoor lighting, shading, and intelligent
outdoor lighting together in this way. For customers who want that complete experience, Lutron and Coastal Source provide a unique path to deliver it. For dealers who are looking to enter the outdoor market, what will they learn at the Coastal Source booth? FD: One of the cornerstones of our products is making it easy for dealers to enter the outdoor market. The CI channel is already made up of experts, and while outdoor lighting is available through a lot of channels and much of it is distributed, we are strictly dealer-direct. Our Plug+Play approach keeps the required skill set and installation time low across both audio and lighting, while the way everything connects makes the installation incredibly reliable.

CEDIA Research Finds Continued Demand Despite Economic Pressures By Grant Morgan CEDIA’s latest Professional Smart Home Market Analysis report values the residential integration market at nearly $34 billion and finds that integrators remain optimistic about growth despite economic pressures on homeowners. The findings were presented at Monday’s CEDIA Town Hall. The study, conducted with the Farnsworth Group, collected 287 responses from residential technology professionals, compared with 65 responses for CEDIA’s previous study. The research found that larger integration firms account for a disproportionate share of the market. Networking was among the largest categories, representing about 15% of the overall market. There’s also a challenging housing backdrop. Single-family housing starts declined last year and are expected to fall again this year, while declining permits suggest continued pressure on new construction. Existing homes offer a better opportunity. The average U.S. home is about 44 years old, supporting continued demand for repair, maintenance, and
remodeling. At the same time, homeowners are reluctant to move. About half of mortgage holders have rates below 4%, while home values have increased significantly, giving homeowners substantial equity but little incentive to sell. Economic concerns remain a major obstacle. Declining disposable income, higher debt, and weak consumer confidence are affecting spending on discretionary projects. “The money didn’t leave, but it is certainly concentrated,” said Farnsworth Group’s Grant Farnsworth. Additionally, the research found that the top 20% of U.S. households by income account for roughly half of all home improvement spending, making affluent homeowners an important market for custom integrators. Despite economic uncertainty, about eight in 10 respondents said they expect their businesses to grow over the next 12 months, citing increased demand as the primary reason. About 75% of projects originate directly with the homeowner, rather than through a general contractor, designer, or architect. Lighting ranked
Grant Farnsworth as the leading growth opportunity, followed by AI integration, new products and diversification, shades, and home automation. Networking was the most widely installed technology, with 88% of respondents reporting a networking installation during the past year. However, project cancellations and postponements have increased during the past two quarters, suggesting that even affluent homeowners are becoming more cautious. The CEDIA Professional Smart Home Market Analysis will be released on Sept. 16 and is free for CEDIA members.

BOOTH 2120 The Leon Studio Frame for Sony BRAVIA 9 II and BRAVIA 7 II RGB TVs announced in May is designed to integrate highperformance display technology into a cohesive architectural element within the home. By framing the television as a finished design feature, the solution minimizes the visual distinction between technology and the surrounding environment, allowing the display to complement the room’s materials, layout, and overall aesthetic. The frame is precision-crafted with a modern profile and a range of premium finish options, enabling it to align with a variety of interior styles. Beyond installation, the Leon Studio Frame extends the function of the display by allowing it to transition into a curated visual element when not in use, supporting both performance and design within the same solution. This dual-purpose approach enables the display to serve as both an entertainment centerpiece and a design-integrated feature within the space.

Phoenix House Makes the Case for Early Integration By Grant Morgan Performance homes offer unlimited potential for all trades to elevate the built environment, and the Phoenix House in Vancouver, British Columbia, offers a good example of what can happen when a technology professional is treated as part of the design team rather than someone brought in after the plans are finished. The multi-generational home was rebuilt after the homeowners lost their previous house to a fire. From the beginning, the project brought together architect Roger Lafreniere, Best Builders; interior designer Josephina Serra, partner at Form Collective; and Elisabeth Baudinaud, founder and principal of CarbonWise, who joined Technology Designer Magazine’s editor-in-chief, Douglas Weinstein, on stage for a panel presentation at Wednesday’s Technology Designer Magazine Luncheon at CEDIA Expo 2026. That early involvement became one of the project’s biggest advantages. Lafreniere said Friedman was one of the first calls
From left: Douglas Weinstein, Josephina Serra, Elisabeth Baudinaud, and Roger Lafreniere made after Best Builders became involved, because builders and homeowners don’t necessarily know what questions to ask about technology. Friedman’s approach was notably different from a traditional technology sales presentation. Rather than starting with products, he invited the homeowners and members of the design team to his home and
demonstrated how technology could support their daily routines. The homeowners quickly understood what was possible—but perhaps more importantly, so did the rest of the design team. For integrators, that approach is significant. Much of the value of early involvement isn’t necessarily in deciding which products will be installed. It’s influencing the infrastructure and design decisions that become increasingly difficult and expensive to change once construction begins. The home’s controls make it possible to manage lighting and shades across three generations of occupants, while the infrastructure provides flexibility for future systems. Even seemingly small decisions, such as how controls are presented, had to work for an aging family member as well as younger occupants. For the custom integration industry, the lesson is straightforward: Early involvement isn’t just an opportunity to sell more technology. It’s an opportunity to influence the home before technology becomes constrained by architecture, construction, and budget.
EXECUTIVE INSIGHT
Lutron Goes All In on Intelligent Lighting By Anthony Savona BOOTH 2111 While at first Lutron’s larger-than-life presence at CEDIA Expo may seem typical for the company—large booth space, a substantial manufacturer training offering, and sponsorship of events throughout the show—here are some changes. “We have a whole new booth experience this year,” said Melissa Andresko, chief corporate brand ambassador, Lutron. “Lutron’s booth at ISE was a single-room experience and it was very successful. Now we have replicated that experience here for the U.S.” Lutron’s manufacturer product sessions have returned, but this year the company has invested in two training rooms, hosting 22 sessions—which is four times more than anything they’ve offered in the past. Also returning for the third consecutive year is the Lutron Lab. “It’s a great place for our customers to meet the engineers behind the products, ask super-technical questions, and discuss challenging installation conditions,” said Andresko. “The customers enjoy sharing feedback on the products and
our team appreciates hearing what our customers would love to see from Lutron.” The big focus at the show, however, is Lutron’s new Intelligent Lighting Platform, which is making its U.S. debut here at Expo. “With Lutron’s acquisition of Orluna last year, it provided us an opportunity to help fill out some of the gaps in our portfolio,” said Dan Vander Valk, director, luxury residential business at Lutron. “At CEDIA Expo, we have brought a subset of the Orluna offering to North America. This a great architectural design-forward solution that’s going to help broaden our portfolio and fit an even wider number of applications and needs in the home. “It will have a tunable color temperature range of 1800-4000K, smooth and continuous dimming to 0.1%, and use Clear Connect Type X wireless communication like our other Intelligent Light Sources. It will also be compatible with both RadioRA 3 and HomeWorks QSX.” Orluna will offer a selection of downlights, cylinders, and path lights as part of this portfolio. All versions are on display at the Lutron booth. In addition to the new Intelligent Lighting
products, Lutron will be showing the new Palladiom Drapery System and the latest additions to its Native by Design program. “Last year, Lutron had a big announcement with Coastal Source that kicked off our Native by Design program,” said Andresko. “This year we have expanded the program with three new partners: MerlinLight, run by Glenn Johnson, is using Ketra in his art framing projector, and Matthew McCormick Studio and Ted Bradley Studio are both integrating our Intelligent Lighting Solutions into their decorative fixtures. They are in our booth, along with our other partners such as Cerno, Coastal Source, and Hartmann&Forbes.”

SpecOp Secure Steps In Where Wi-Fi Calling Falters BOOTH 3038 As Wi-Fi calling increasingly fails to deliver reliable indoor voice, SpecOp Secure is helping integrators solve the problem at its source with engineered cellular amplification systems. Much of the failure traces back to congestion on the carrier’s own network, which struggles to handle call volume and often can’t get calls through cleanly. Modern construction, like Low-E glass, steel framing, and concrete, compounds the problem by blocking signal before it reaches a phone, dropping calls and complicating emergency routing that depends on the carrier network. SpecOp’s cellular amplification systems keep phones on the carrier network throughout a property instead of relying on Wi-Fi. Every system starts with a survey and design from SpecOp’s FCC-licensed RF engineers, tailored to construction, layout, and carrier mix. Integrators can sell it outright or offer it as a subscription with built-in recurring revenue, backed by unlimited remote support either way. “This isn’t the stick-on repeater kit integrators remember from ten years ago,” said Ted Bremekamp, VP of Channel at SpecOp Secure. “Every system starts with an engineer-designed layout, and we stay on the account to guide the install and commission it to make sure it’s functioning at 100 percent.”

IWALLET 2.0 Collecting overdue invoices is one of the most time-consuming jobs for contractors. At CEDIA iWallet introduces an AI-powered Accounts Receivable Assistant that automates the entire process. The workflow engine tracks invoice aging, sends reminders by email, text message, or voice call, and adjusts each step based on how long an invoice has been outstanding. When a payment dispute or another situation needs human judgment, the system pauses and hands the account back to staff. The result is faster collections, more consistent communication, improved cash flow, and less time spent chasing customers for payment. iwallet.com | Booth #C915

Panelists Emphasize Early Involvement with Lighting Designers By Nina Snyder Integrators should partner with lighting designers early in the process for best results, according to the panel of experts from the “From Subcontractor to Collaborator: Partnering with Designers on Intelligent Living” Wednesday afternoon session at Expo. Cecilia Ramos, VP of architectural markets for Lutron, emphasized the importance of involving lighting designers in the concept design phase or schematic design phase. Sometimes lighting designers are brought in at later phases of a project, then struggle to bring their designs to life. Ramos also said she likes to receive a furniture design to properly illuminate a space, a step which some integrators overlook. “Without a furniture design, I can give you a grid of downlights, but that’s not a great lighting design,” she said. Viewing lighting designers as collaborators rather
than subcontractors is also vital to a flourishing relationship, said Carley Knobloch, a technology advisor for AUDIOVISIONS, a California-based integrator. “It takes time,” Knoblach said. “It’s not all going to happen in one conversation or one project.” Carley Knobloch (left) and Cecilia Ramos Sometimes integrators and designers struggle to communicate during a project. designers and integrators, Knobloch offered a cheat Knoblach encourages both sides to find “a middle sheet to translate. For example, when designers talk ground so we can all speak to each other more about warm or cool lighting, integrators should effectively.” translate that to color temperature. Trinnov Audio Updates WaveForming, Teases AI By John Sciacca MR 204 Trinnov Audio is showcasing the latest version of its WaveForming technology at Expo, with an update that will bring bass improvement to a much larger group of Altitude owners. WaveForming is Trinnov’s term for advanced room correction that can correct for standing waves in a room, producing cleaner, tighter bass response across a wider range of seats. Previously, the system required a minimum of four subwoofers, two up front and two in back, with these arrays acting as “emitters” and “absorbers.” Jon Herron shows off the company’s latest software. With this latest software update, WaveForming can now be done with just two subwoofto the room’s physics, resulting in more natural ers located in the front of the room. sounding bass. Improvements have also been made to the Arnaud Destinay, Trinnov’s managing director, WaveForming optimizations with “more approprialso demonstrated how AI might be implemented ate windowing of the measurements and correcin the future to perform real-time “tone control” tions.” This is said to yield more reliable and stable adjustments. “Calibration is a conversation, not a performance by focusing correction where it is preset,” Destinay said. needed and applying filters that are more faithful For example, by using an external AI LLM
(Claude in this case), Destinay was able to enter commands like, “The bass is a little muddy” or “I can’t hear the dialogue clearly,” and the AI would send changes to the Trinnov Altitude processor to make real-time corrections to processing EQ, gain, delay, and filters to adjust audio per the input request. Once the LLM performed the requested audio tweaks, it could respond with answers like, “That boosted the upper-mid range on the center channel only, which is right where speech intelligibility lives. Dialogue should now be noticeably easier to follow.” Stressing the sustainability and longevity of Trinnov’s products, the company also announced a new “Care Plan” that extends the Altitude’s original five-year warranty to 10 years from date of purchase. This plan also includes an annual remote health check (software, logs, storage), and priority dealer support. The new WaveForming software update will launch on Sept. 9 and will be free to all Altitude owners.

Outdoor Living on the Big Screen By Wayne Cavadi Outdoor TVs are a booming business right now. Michael Buratto, senior director, product management-entertainment, ADI Global, sees the outdoor TV market growing by up to 25% year over year, depending on screen size, performance, and feature set. Michael Gleason, director of sales, Skyworth USA, reported the company’s Clarus outdoor TVs have seen 600% growth year over year and “a huge increase” in partial sun sales. Industry research puts the CAGR at around 9.2%, according to Fiona Qin, sales director, Sylvox. “That said, Sylvox has been significantly outpacing the market,” Qin added. “Our retail channel performance has been exceptionally strong, and we see that momentum continuing.” The accelerated growth in outdoor AV installations is not a new concept. According to Jason McGraw, group VP and show director of CEDIA Expo, the shift began during the pandemic. “With people spending so much time at home,” he said, “the backyard became one of the few places to go, and homeowners started investing accordingly: outdoor kitchens, outdoor living spaces, and, increasingly, outdoor entertainment like distributed audio and large-format, weatherproof outdoor displays and LED screens.” With outdoor areas now essentially viewed as an additional room, outdoor TV installation is creating big opportunities for integrators and manufacturers. Knowing the features that best suit all customers is imperative. Gleason feels that brightness is still the most important feature people look for, noting that the Clarus Outdoor TV line features some of the brightest in the industry. Beyond brightness, Buratto said anti-glare performance is especially important, along with weather resistance that can withstand heat, humidity, and
the elements. Qin said customers want a “worry-free experience,” which is why reliability should be atop the feature list. “They want a TV they can count on to turn on at the start of the season and perform year after year,” Buratto added. “Beyond durability, they expect the same experience they get indoors: a sharp, bright picture, fast and intuitive navigation, and built-in access to their favorite streaming services.” Longevity should not be a concern for customers. Per Buratto, a properly designed outdoor TV should have a lifespan comparable to, or potentially longer than, a typical indoor TV. “The key is using a display specifically engineered to withstand outdoor conditions, including temperature fluctuations, moisture, and UV exposure,” he added, noting that SunBrite TVs are built for just that. Can the outdoors perform inside? Could a sports bar potentially go all-in on outdoor displays for both the interior and exterior of their space? A commercial space could use a consumer model, but Buratto cautioned the customer may be paying extra for features it doesn’t need. Take the sports bar, for example. Most sports bars have external streaming or cable devices, so paying for built-in streaming services is an unnecessary cost. Conversely, said Buratto, commercial models are typically designed for more demanding environments, with higher brightness for challenging lighting conditions and added durability features, such as protective glass and more robust connectivity and control options, making a commercial display a better longterm investment for a sports bar environment. Gleason agreed, stating that indoor TVs are not designed to compete with the sun, much like your smartphone is difficult to read on a bright day. “Commercial-grade displays are typically built for longer daily run times, higher brightness for spaces with lots of ambient light, and features geared toward business
SunBrite TVs are specifically engineered to withstand outdoor conditions, including temperature fluctuations, moisture, and UV exposure. use, like remote content management across multiple screens,” Gleason added. “Consumer models are optimized more for picture quality and streaming, since they’re designed with a residential viewing experience in mind. Having said that, we have seen our outdoor TVs being used for commercial use in Texas and other areas with great success.” An outdoor entertainment space should sound as good as it looks, and Buratto feels audio is also becoming a critical feature. While some customers prefer the built-in audio, Buratto notes that a soundbar does make for a more immersive experience. “ADI offers a wide range of audio solutions from Episode and other brands that integrate easily with outdoor TV systems,” Buratto offered. Skyworth features a built-in soundbar with all its outdoor TVs. However, for larger outdoor spaces and commercial applications, Gleason said customers often connect the TV to a distributed audio system with outdoor or landscape speakers, allowing sound to be heard throughout the viewing area. You can see for yourself at CEDIA Expo’s Destination Outdoors, presented by Coastal Source in collaboration with Lutron. Per McGraw, the experience brings the connected home to life, including a covered outdoor entertaining area, where outdoor TVs are paired with lighting, audio, and more for an immersive, high-tech experience.
