UNIFORM POLICY 2026-2027
Uniform Rationale Our development of a uniform policy is driven by a desire to create and promote an environment of learning where dress is not a distraction to the educational process based on the following principles: Our goal is to honor God in all we do, acknowledging the Lordship of Jesus Christ in our choices. All human actions, including outward manifestations such as clothing, reveal and communicate the disposition of the heart at some level. It is our desire to address these heart issues in one uniform policy rather than seeking to anticipate and curb the numerous manifestations of it that surface throughout the year with a looser dress code. Clothing represents the vocational calling of a person, and inherent in the uniform policy is a desire to create an environment where undue attention is not drawn to specific students. The neat appearance created by a uniform enhances a ready-to-learn atmosphere. Uniforms help engender a cohesive presentation of the students in our school. When our students are in uniform, it communicates, aesthetically, that they are part of the same team, working toward the same goals. The student is part of a group identity that strives for excellence, and the code establishes a tradition toward that end. The uniform code should save parents money. The uniform code deemphasizes the social impact of dress and helps focus the students on character and academic issues. The uniform code addresses security. On field trips, students in uniform aid the teachers in keeping track of everyone. On the playground or in the school, teachers and staff can clearly identify students from outsiders. Students are expected to be in uniform while on campus unless specified otherwise by the administration. The administration is responsible for the interpretation of the policy, and the enforcement of the policy is the responsibility of parents, administration, and staff. If a student comes to school out of uniform five times in a year, it will result in an office visit.
School Uniform Details Tuesday and Wednesday are regular school uniform days. Thursdays are Formal Chapel Days. (Some exceptions may occur depending on school-wide events. Families will be notified in advance.) Outerwear Optional navy sweaters, cardigans, vests from Lands' End. The only permitted jackets are navy zip-up fleece jackets or navy zip-up fleece-lined rain jackets purchased from Lands' End with the school logo. Spiritwear Spiritwear Clothes may only be worn for special events (e.g. school-wide Olympics), specified in email from the Head of School. Spiritwear Clothes may not be worn as school uniform. General Appearance Students are expected to look neat, clean, and modest at all times. Skirts and jumpers must be at least knee-length. Shirts must be tucked in for all students. Exclusions: embroidery (other than The Terra Nova School emblem), flip flops, corduroy, denim, capris, cargo pants/shorts, leggings (as pants), hooded sweaters, sweatshirts, hats, scarves, bandanas, lace, ruffles or distracting styles (e.g. dyed or unkempt hair, boys' earrings, no-show socks, torn or soiled clothes, overdone makeup or jewelry, tattoos, immodesty, visible undergarments or camisoles, over or undersized clothing, etc.). Shorts must reach the middle of the thigh (no short shorts, please). Jackets and non-uniform sweaters may not be worn in the classroom. Men's hair should well maintained and not long enough to touch their shoulders.
Uniform Violations Discipline for Uniform Violations Teachers that notice a dress code violation will submit a ClassReach form to the Head of School. The Head of School will make a violation determination and a note will go home to parents if a violation has been determined.
