The Splendid and the Vile While fighting off a bout of flu or some malady, I prayed was not (it wasn’t), I had time to listen to the latest from Devil in the White City author Erik Larson. Its title, noted in the headline, couldn’t better summarize the content of this issue and year: The Splendid—our Product Innovation Awards/the results of the annual Readers’ Choice—our review of the products and trends that captured our editors’ and readers’ imaginations; and, of course, The Vile— the aforementioned pandemic that has changed our lives indelibly, not the least being our work and living practices, but also our sense of well-being, mentally, as well as physically. Indeed, it has been a struggle to endure, and resulted in many dark days for this observer. But as challenging as the situation has been, hearing the story of Winston Churchill and the British peoples’

trial to endure the Blitz and threat of occupation prior to America’s engagement in , has given me perspective. I am not optimistic that the pandemic, and all the collateral damage that has resulted, will be over soon. However, this quarantine has opened our eyes to wounds that have been festering too long, and provided us direction on issues we must act—just as the British had to up the manufacture of Spitfires if they wished to survive. To that point of unpreparedness, a lesson communicated in the book, is the disaster which can result from incorrectly reading events and signs, including history itself. With that in mind, we began this year’s exercise by reviewing where things were a year ago, at least as far as what we projected as the big trends that would affect the world. Most of those drivers—at least the desire to see them implemented—rang true: addressing 2030; wellness; delivering experiences; and doing things faster, cheaper, better. Given the disastrous impact of , however, the question now becomes how to do so—at the least, prioritizing which of these desires, in a general absence of work, matter most. A Churchill quote offers a plan: “It is a mistake to try to look too far ahead. The chain of destiny can only be grasped one link at a time.” Case in point: As far as 2030/addressing carbon emissions, the goal may be to be zero carbon—and kudos to companies like Velux and Neolith, who announced

such goals this year—but maybe not-so-complex, or costly, initiatives can be implemented today, as declared in this 2020 quote: “Through our naturebased design approach we have transformed 30,000 sq. ft. of asphalt into new nature.” Speaking is S.L. Andersson, design director of SLA. He’s referencing the Sankt Kjelds Square “cloudburst protection” project in Copenhagen, which won a prestigious Danish architecture prize for the firm’s reimagining of a congested intersection into a traffic circle filled and surrounded by greenery. “In the design, we use ecosystem services to not only protect the city from flooding after cloudbursts, purify polluted air, improve microclimate and provide a social foundation for the neighborhood, we also created a new experience of what it means to live in a city.” Amen. Another quote in my preparations that hit home, was one from the jury of the World Architecture Festival that referenced a project featured in 2019’s review—the recreated London Bridge station by Nick Grimshaw. “It’s a major repair of the city’s fabric.” Given all the -related turmoil imposed on our cities from the exile of business, to protests and violence and social unrest erupting in the face of police shootings and all the ill will that has festered for some time—it is essential we come together to figure out triage means, alone, to “repair the fabric” of our cities and citizens. Figuring all this out is on us. For what it’s worth, following is a compendium of products and thoughts that, at least, offer ammunition for the fight. Keep this last Churchill quote in mind, and try to smile: “If you’re going through hell, keep going.”

The Brick Industry Assn. (BIA) announces that clay brick can now contribute towards the fulfillment of the Materials and Resources requirements in LEED v4.0 and v4.1. A new U.S.-Canada Industrywide Clay Brick Environmental Product Declaration (Brick Industrywide EPD) has also been completed, third-party certified and published, reflecting data associated with the manufacture of units that comply with nearly every currently active ASTM clay brick specification. The Brick Industrywide EPD also qualifies
for use in the Building Product Disclosure and Optimization–Environmental Product Declarations credit as a Type III EPD, conforming to ISO 14025 and ISO 21930 with a cradle to gate scope. “The new EPD provides evidence of clay brick’s sustainable benefits and allows designers to further recognize clay brick’s role as a major element in sustainable design and construction,” said BIA President Ray Leonhard. Products from an industry-wide EPD are valued by LEED v4.1 as one whole product for the purposes of the credit achievement calculation, whereas LEED v4.0
awards a value of one-half for these products. A total of 20 products are required on a project to receive this credit. The Brick Industry-wide EPD represents the average environmental impact of clay brick production in the U.S. and Canada. The data for the EPD captures 32% of 2018 brick production submitted by 13 different manufacturers from plants in 14 states and provinces in the U.S. and Canada. Collaborative Delivery Solutions
Prefabrication and Collaboration Help Meet Aggressive Schedule Too often traditional delivery methods result in siloed workflows that create conflicts and costly change orders. However, collaborative project delivery systems produce more reliable outcomes, promote team integration and group cohesion. By incorporating progressive solutions such as Trade Management Partners (TMPs) and prefabrication, design and construction goals are aligned, budgets are met and schedules are often accelerated. The coordination and design input from contractors as well as designers prior to the start of construction are proving to be a strong fit, especially in the healthcare industry with the need to reduce escalating costs. An aggressive schedule in a busy labor market drove CG Schmidt, Advocate Aurora Health, Cobalt Partners, and design partner HGA to incorporate TMPs and to prefabricate building components offsite for the recently completed Advocate Aurora Health (AAH) Center-84South.
Collaborative delivery solutions, including prefab, help reduce costs and meet aggressive schedules. Project Overview Located in the 40-acre 84South mixed-use development in Greenfield, Wis., this five-story, 146,200-sq.ft., new Ambulatory Health Center is the central location for Advocate Aurora Children’s Health services. The building is home to eight surgical suites, two pain management procedure rooms, four GI suites and two outpatient interventional radiology suites— the first of their kind in Wisconsin. With the health center’s recent opening, Advocate Aurora Children’s Health will be able to offer more comprehensive pediatric services to the area. The facility also houses Advocate Aurora’s Sports Health services, along with a pediatric sports health gym and classroom space. This space brings increased availability for outpatient orthopedic surgery to AAH’s patients. The health center is home to midwifery services with a variety of women’s health services provided, ranging from general health education to family planning and obstetrical care. Based on a patient-centered, collaborative care model, the new outpatient center co-locates orthopedic exam, office and imaging conveniently at the retail-inspired main entry with surgical, recovery and pain management services on the floors above. Additionally, the new facility included construction of a 400 stall, four-story parking structure.

Project goals were met through the use of 80 multi-trade prefabricated MEP racks that included 20 ft. of ductwork in the corridors as well as the prefabrication of duct, piping and conduit/cable. Once on-site and verified, the racks were lifted to each floor to be connected and attached.
Rethinking Subcontractor Roles in Design + Planning As opposed to a traditional contractor-subcontractor relationship, in which architects and engineers draw plans without trade partner input, TMP exemplifies collaboration between team members. Through this, skilled trade contractors and suppliers are engaged early in a project and integrated into the design process. This upfront collaboration allows for design input, reduction of redundancies, value engineered solutions for cost and design challenges, constructability issue resolution and identification of potential speed-to-market strategies such as prefab. The Health Center-84South team included Staff Electric and J.F. Ahern as TMPs for design development and prefabricated mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP). Instead of the typical workflow, in which each firm would create their own drawings and 3D models, the team members worked in tandem on a single 3D BIM model, eliminating miscommunication and the need for re-drawings. By removing silos, the TMP collaborative delivery method resulted in lower overall costs, improved safety and faster speed to market: The community received local access to healthcare one month earlier, compared to a traditional delivery method; 0% rework was achieved vs. 15% rework in traditional delivery methods; and, there were zero injuries building and installing the prefabricated racks. Senior Construction Project Manager, EJ Herr
commented, “I think the TMP process is one that we will utilize for most projects moving forward. I can’t really imagine doing it any other way.”
Prefabrication Although not a new concept in construction, the team set an incredibly high goal to have as much as 40% of the MEP systems prefabricated off-site. Through the use of 80 multi-trade prefabricated MEP racks that included 20-ft. of ductwork in the corridors as well as the prefabrication of each individual utility—duct, piping and conduit/cable that filled in between the racks—the project team was able to meet this goal with substantial benefits to the schedule, quality and safety. To reduce the risk of design errors, the team used state-of-the-art fabrication software with each component barcoded and shipped to the jobsite along with an installation plan. Using their mobile devices, workers scanned the barcodes to verify the location for each installation. Once on-site and verified, the prefabricated racks were lifted to each floor to be connected and attached, a task completed within a mere hour of each delivery. The just-in-time prefabrication and delivery process had a tremendous impact on expediting the schedule and lowering costs. By removing silos, TMP collaboration resulted in lower overall costs and, faster speed to market.

Cool Ideas to Improve Energy Efficiency in Roofing Roofing materials are among the most scrutinized materials architects and designers select when deciding on the proper design components, especially for enhanced energy efficiency. There are, however, many other factors that impact the material selection process. Insurance requirements, foot traffic, weather patterns, and perhaps most importantly, building codes, all impact the choices that are made in determining roofing materials on a project. Additional insulation helps energy efficiency, to an extent, but too much—and too little—can lead to unintended consequences and significant structural problems. Some insulation is also incompatible with certain roof types. Therefore, energy-efficient roofing comes down to total system evaluation. “It’s not a product question, really, it’s a system question,” said James Kirby, a Building and Roofing Science Architect for GAF.
The transition toward more energy efficiency will play an important part in reducing carbon footprints. Some Cool Numbers Americans spend about $40 billion annually to air condition buildings. Approximately 90% of homes in the United States rely on air conditioning; AC costs account for 12% of total household energy costs and 17% of electricity expenditures. Japan, where 91% of households have air conditioning, is the only nation with a larger percentage than U.S. homes with AC. In China, only 60% have AC. Heating and cooling costs are significant for building owners; the number that draws the most attention, in terms of energy efficiency, is R-value, which is the ability of a material to resist movement of heat through it. The higher the R-value, the more insulation the material provides by limiting heat flow between the outside of the building. “We are seeing a trend toward increased R-value requirements,” said Glen Clapper, , Director of Technical Services for the National Roofing Contractors Association. “That generally means thicker insulation. “We’ve seen some new materials, such as vacuum-sealed insulated panels and fasteners with thermal breaks that are helping to improve energy efficiency.” Seven climate zones in the United States for commercial and industrial buildings and homeowners recommend insulation levels. Energy codes for

commercial buildings are also established by the International Energy Conservation Code. “There’s not a one-size-fits-all approach for commercial construction,” Clapper said. “Requirements vary based upon climate zone and building type. R-value and solar reflectance are also factors that have to be determined.”
Reducing Energy Costs A building’s energy efficiency is directly impacted by the integration of materials in the building’s design and the quality of the construction. Some materials, however, can help keep a rein on energy costs. Consider thermally broken roof hatches. The product can feature 3 in. of polyisocyanurate insulation with an R-value of 20.3 in both the cover and curb. Such an R-value meets code requirements and standards currently in line with today’s commercial roofing systems. An important consideration about thermally broken roof hatches is that they reduce harmful condensation, which means interior and exterior metal surfaces are separated by non-conductive material to eliminate heat transfer. It is particularly beneficial in buildings in which there is a wide fluctuation in temperature. The hatch helps keep heat inside the building when a roof is covered by snow and on cold, dreary winter days but helps air-conditioned buildings keep cool as the sun beats down on sweltering summer months. Air barriers and vapor retarders can also reduce costs. Air barriers are systems of materials designed and constructed to control airflow between a conditioned space and an unconditioned space. The air barrier system is the primary air enclosure boundary that separates indoor (conditioned) air and outdoor
(unconditioned) air. Vapor retarders are made from one of a variety of materials that are designed to impede the moisture flow through the wall assembly and protect the building envelope from condensation. Vapor barriers can also act as an interior barrier, minimizing the flow of air into insulated cavities during cold weather. “The R-value of insulation hasn’t increased on a product-by-product basis, but recognizing that attachment methods for insulation, the inclusion of air barriers and vapor retarders into roof designs will improve energy efficiency,” said Kirby.
Worldwide Commitment The trend toward improving energy efficiency is not only occurring in the United States. In India, for example, 40% of the population is expected to live in cities by 2030. More than 60% of the roofs are made of concrete, metal and asbestos, which can trap heat. “Buildings account for more than 30% of India’s electricity consumption and a significant share of annual carbon dioxide emissions,” Arvind Kumar and Rajkiran V. Biloikar wrote in The Indian Express. “It is thus imperative that any effort towards energy conservation must include a focused approach to urban areas and more specifically on buildings and built-up areas.” A report by The United Nations Environment Programme International Resource Panel issued a report earlier this year that said emission from the material cycle of residential buildings in G7 countries and China could be reduced by at least 80% in 2050 through a series of material efficiency strategies. With the current focus on protecting the planet’s natural resources, the building and construction industry is not immune from playing its part.

For one, in the early months of isolation, many Angelinos reported they could see the sky in ways they had never before, due to the almost instant removal of cars from the streets and highways. It’s a valid question to consider moving forward—can cities recover with our current transportation systems and priorities? It was among the questions the group Meeting of the Minds recently asked in a webinar—specifically, what do recent transportation trends indicate for urban recovery? Certain cities, it noted, are using this crisis to “center” residents, noting equity, safety and access, will allow them to be more successful compared to other

Par for the course in a COVID world is eating and drinking outside. Already a hot trend coming into 2020, proprietors hustled to create accommodations where they could. Well Being Requires Peace; Sleep
One of the casualties of has been sound sleep, as this observer will attest. Its impact ranges from exhaustion and fatigue, to an inability to focus—to outright depression. According to the University of California Davis, it’s called “coronasomnia.” “It’s a problem everywhere, across all age groups,” said Angela Drake, a UC Davis Health clinical professor in the Dept. of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Her recommendations include keeping a daily routine, and laying off alcohol and sleep aids; instead, she says, exercise, meditate and get plenty of sun. Pictured at the right is one way to hit on a number of these tips in one shot—the space is Männistö Church, in Kuopio, Finland, created by Finnish architect Juhai Leiviskä, Velux’ 2020 Daylight Award laureate. Besides being a place of serenity, the church shows a product trend we’ve observed in both our Architectural SSL and Architectural Products’ PIA awards—that of clusters of long, hanging and adjustable LED pendants, that not only provide just the right amount of light, but act almost as sculpture, subtly helping break up the volume of high-ceiling spaces without detracting from the more sublime aspects of these spaces.

Double Take 2: Residential/Commercial Cross-Over Residential accents have become de rigueur in offices, but as homes become workplaces, more commercial techniques come to bear. As demonstrated by the project to the right, metal, as an envelope solution, is growing for both new levels of performance and aesthetics, particularly as Passive House standards continue to gain strength, especially in delivering more sustainable and affordable multifamily housing. In the case the structure on the right, the home is set on nine acres of preserved woodlands, near Old Tappan, N.J. Architectura, a New Jersey/New York-based architectural firm, wanted to highlight the home’s unique surroundings. The design relies on dozens of anodized aluminum panels in two different finishes, by Lorin Industries, and manufactured into exterior wall panels by ATAS International. The thin vertical panels reflect the abundance of trees and sky. Given that the reflective nature of the panels is key to the façade’s design, durability was also a major concern. The coil anodizing process, in this case, which protects the aluminum from chipping, flaking and peeling, ensures the latter, while still enabling a variety of finishes for design flexibility.

Sited within a New Urbanist neighborhood of traditionalstyle homes–and across the street from Memphis’ Mississippi River shoreline–Civitas house makes a strong statement in its looks and performance.
In the Civitas home in Memphis, metal panels were a key part of the passive strategy of the structure, as they not only support the passive cooling of the interior, but also created a hidden channel along the most exposed façade to enable rainwater harvesting. Designed by Memphis-based firm archimania, principal Barry Alan Yoakum was his own client. The materials he chose were selected for their durability, with the goal of creating a home that would remain standing two centuries. To this end, structural insulated panels (SIPs) and cross-laminated timbers were used for the structural system. Petersen was the supplier for almost all the aluminum used in the project, supplying 15,200 sq. ft. of panels and sheet metal. Regarding the rainwater capture system, Yoakum didn’t want visible guttering to mar its clean lines. Instead, he designed a rainscreen that allows water to pass behind the exterior wall to guttering that channels it to a cistern. The home features roofs at two levels, which appear flat, but feature Petersen’s Tite-Loc Plus panels installed at a 1/2:12 pitch to provide an attachment for PV.

Places to Escape While budgets remain tight, “broadcast selling”—delivering very personal shopping experiences—is crucial for survival. The definition of stir crazy has been perhaps crystallized during this time of . With access to gathering and entertainment places extremely limited, shopping has become one place where many can escape the captivity of home. In response, it’s more critical than ever to deliver spaces that deliver experience. Unquestionably, retail is in turmoil. At a larger level, some funding is being earmarked for sustainability upgrades but smaller operations are holding on to the funds they would otherwise allocate to upgrading and renovations to keep their doors open. T HE 2020 PRODUCT INNOVATION AWARDS:
Now in our tenth iteration, this year’s award winners demonstrate the response of the manufacturing community to hot trends developing in the design community. “Come tomorrow, will I be older?” asked the band the Yardbirds in their 1966 classic “Shapes of Things.” The young men of the group, facing the turbulence of the 1960s, including the Vietnam War, certainly had reason to wonder. Some 50 years later, given the horrors of , and street violence that marked the year, we might ask the same question. 2020 has been a difficult year, and it’s hard to find the silver lining amid the clouds. That being said, one thing that gives me hope rolling into 2021, is what I’ve seen on the pages before you— those items presented here in our 10th Product Innovation Awards. As I flipped through the section, seeking the right words to summarize this year’s batch, shapes and forms immediately came to mind, as did another verse of the British Invasion song noted above: “Come tomorrow, may I be bolder than today.” It sure seems the innovators behind this year’s entries took up that gauntlet. At the fore was the lighting category with exciting shapes and forms that not only complement the spaces they accent,
but in many ways, create signature elements—I just love both the decorative hanging pendants on pages 50-51 of the section. But it’s just not lighting. Textures, too, titillate, be it in metal weaves and surfaces, to ceiling systems, to concrete pavers and the architectural structures that rise above them. Case in point, just look at the harmony of the really cool pavilion in San Antonio’s Confluence Park on p. 46, by Lake Flato Architects, and the organically shaped Keystone Pentagon pavers before it. It even caught the attention of my snarky son, who is critical of everything. Let me highlight some of the insider material on another entry, which to me, crystallizes the yin and yang of great partnership between architects and manufacturers to create something wonderful. On p. 40—and you are only seeing one of a bevy of photos submitted—are the offices of Expensify, by , which occupy the atrium of an Art Deco building. Cladding those cantilevered, and mind-blowing offices off the stairs, is a skin/ surface material from Pure + FreeForm that
respects the grandeur of the interiors, while providing a modern look that reflected the company’s tech nature, and the realities of its finite lease. The lightweight metal allowed ZGF to keep costs down, while the brass finish was a connecting detail. “P&FF was the perfect fit for our project. It met our desire to find a bespoke finish for our client, and was delivered within a very aggressive time frame,” says Franco Rosete , Principal, ZGF Portland. “Pure + FreeForm allowed us to maintain our values and not sacrifice aesthetics. The use of the recycled aluminum panel, in this case, allowed us to use a less substantial structure, while allowing us to use the same material for other uses to maintain continuity,” adds Alan Gerencer +, Principal, ZGF. “Working with Pure + Freeform to develop this specific finish was a true partnership in mock-ups and on-site testing.” Good hunting. Working in partnership with the industry, and through its NEW IKON innovation center, and its “Planet Passionate 2030 Vision,” the company is moving to a clean energy future; managing the earth’s resources more sustainably; and protecting the natural environment. Their targets include increasing direct use of renewable energy to 60% by 2030; to be carbon— net zero manufacturing by 2030; and to increase circularity with a goal of upcycling one billion PET bottles into its manufacturing processes by 2025. Stacked for Success While public schools may not be known for their forward-thinking designs, The Heights Building in Arlington, Va., is the exception. Merging two existing secondary schools—the H-B Woodlawn Program and the Eunice Kennedy Shriver Program—into a new 180,000-sq.-ft. building housing 775 students. The building exemplifies modern architecture, energy efficiency and a sense of community that connects students with the surrounding neighborhood as well as a focus on indoor-outdoor learning. Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), in connection with Leo A. Daly, designed the school with a bold, energetic vision to support both schools’ unique student bodies—H-B Woodlawn’s visual and performing arts-focused curricula, and Shriver’s extensive resources for students with specialized educational needs. The school now consists of a stack of five rectangular levels that rotate around the main atrium.
Common areas, such as the school’s auditorium, gymnasium, library and cafeteria, are connected to the atrium, creating a range of spaces where students can engage, socialize and study. Each level has a direct connection to exterior terraces, creating a sense of openness and opportunities for indooroutdoor learning that set it apart from traditional school settings. The glazing systems provided by YKK AP America were integral to providing a highperformance façade with multiple sightlines from the interior and exterior. Its enerGfaçade YUW 750 TU XT unitized curtainwall system was used to curb the building’s energy appetite in areas where large spans of glass were needed, while YKK AP’s high performance YCW 750 SplineTech curtainwall was customized for use in areas where the design was more intricate. In 2019, it acquired high-performance façades solutions provider, Erie Architectural Products Group, to meet this demand for unitized products. Looking to the future of its business, its parent company launched a joint effort with Carnegie Mellon University this year to research technology to install windows, curtainwalls, doors and products using robots and software to improve construction productivity and quality. YKK is investigating virtual reality, augmented reality, mixed reality technologies and researching new methods of installation. JUDGE’S COMMENT: “R&D investment truly represents putting one’s money where its mouth is. The company is also heavily investing in minimizing its carbon footprint— a leadership example the industry needs to better follow.”

Curved Windows Add Aesthetic Touch Fenex provided beautiful curved windows for a renovation project for a high-end retailer in the Miami Design District, Bottega Veneta, a luxury fashion house from Milan, Italy. The district is home to many flagship international luxury stores, art galleries and award-winning restaurants, so meeting the look and feel for this project was key. Fenex worked with the design team to create this unique one-of-a kind window system, that was impact-rated, but also met the client’s aesthetic desires. Due to Miami’s strict standards for wind and impact protection, this window system had a custom configuration of structural interlayer along with its unique frame that would protect this storefront from anything Mother Nature could throw at it. Dovetailing the Benefits A long-span, “thin slab” floor structure, the Dovetail composite floor deck was used by Iott Architecture & Engineering to build the new Aloft Hotel in Ocean City, Md. Dovetail long-span composite floor deck helped the architect of this hotel project save millions in construction costs and shorten the project timeline by months. The project took 14 months from foundation to certificate of occupancy—2.5 to 3 months quicker than what would have been possible using post-tensioned concrete. Compressing the schedule was important in order for the hotel to book the entire summer tourist season. Along with meeting the opening date, crucial to the project was containing costs and retaining Aloft’s open-air style with common spaces uninterrupted by columns and guest rooms with maximum floor-to-ceiling heights. To complete those objectives, the building design is comprised of a steel podium frame for the ground floor while the guest rooms above feature load-bearing cold-formed steel (CFS) demising walls with a 3.5-in. dovetail long-span composite floor deck with a 2-in. lightweight concrete cover. The firm leveraged the unique attributes of the Dovetail Composite Floor Deck to achieve multiple benefits, which included: the structure’s decreased
weight eliminated the need for foundation piles; quick-curing 2-in. concrete cover over the 3.5-in. dovetail composite floor slab; and minimal shoring required during installation of the dovetail composite floor deck, which resulted in faster construction, reduced costs, lighter weight, reduced floor slab thickness, increased ceiling height and smaller column footprints expanded the amenity level floor area. The combination of dovetail composite floor deck and CFS panelized walls is a first-of-its kind framing system for Ocean City, where post-tensioned concrete is the prevailing construction method. This project might not have even proceeded without the cost and time savings associated with the dovetail deck-CFS combo. JUDGE’S COMMENT:

The Commons at Tulane University opened its doors to more than 14,000 students at the beginning of the Fall 2019 semester. The Commons features a variety of multi-functional spaces, including dining and serving spaces, event space, offices, a library and an open-air courtyard. The ultra-modern design of this building gives the university’s student body a place to connect. Driven by a desire to connect the sleek indoor spaces with the foliage-rich landscape, the all-glass design includes bold exterior angles and varying sightlines created by utilizing oversized glass panels, differential movement at curtainwall folds, and varied elevations throughout the building. Inside, inhabitants are treated to sweeping views. Along with the desire for a sleek, clean façade, the tight building site on an active campus meant prefabricated materials requiring minimal on-site storage would best suit the project. The coastal location of the campus also meant that designers had to focus on the building’s ability to resist hurricane-force winds and impact. These key requirements led the team to select YKK AP America’s YHC 300 SSG Cassette Curtain Wall for the exterior of the building, making Tulane Commons the first in the U.S. to feature this hurricaneresistant four-side SSG cassette curtainwall. To address the challenge of various elevation sections and the multiple unique angles involved with the design, YKK AP was able to customize the YHC 300 SSG system to use two mullions pivoting at a common point. This created a visual effect so when looking at the wall, it appears as one line. JUDGE’S COMMENT:

Waterfront Magic The idea for The Wharf light display began with the desire to create floating circles of light for The Wharf, a waterfront development in Washington, D.C. Debra Gilmore, president and Principal of Gilmore Lighting Design, utilized layers of light to establish a visual hierarchy relating to activity within the locations. One challenge was selecting entry plaza lighting. Functional light with a minimal energy footprint was needed and Gilmore wanted a more unique solution than typical festoon string lighting. The team developed an innovative entry solution comprised of an angled catenary system using
suspended, glowing custom LED rings that provide functional egress illumination while adding an artistic moment and a memorable site location. iLight’s Plexineon would be bent to form the circles and suspended from aircraft wire. With the cables angled, rather than horizontal, a custom mounting was needed. Gilmore and her team also worked with iLight to determine electrical component sizes and how the connections would work. The result is a stunning feature that helped the designer win a DC, IES Illumination Award of Merit, and delighted all on the project.

Getting in Tune When it made the decision to relocate its Washington D.C. office, Michael Best LLC mapped out a laundry list of both critical and aspirational items it wanted to incorporate into the design of its new space. Being a firm that was growing its intellectual property book of business, it had first-hand knowledge of new and emerging technologies that could make the new space one of the most innovative, comfortable and appealing in the entire city. LED lighting controlled by color temperature tuning capabilities was at the top of the list. 3 I’M YELLIN’ TIMBER A beautiful and high-performance modified timber, the LIGNIA Fire is sourced from FSC-certified softwoods. Together with the manufacturer’s modification process, fire meets the flame spread requirements for Class A fire-rated buildings. Door Lock Assurance Critical In Crisis During an active assailant crisis, every second is crucial. According to testimony presented by the Sandy Hook Advisory Commission, an active shooter has never breached a locked classroom door by defeating the lock. The Mortise Lock Status Indicator by ASSA ABLOY helps occupants easily determine whether a door is locked or unlocked and whether a space is occupied or vacant. The viewing window is 25% larger than the industry standard and can be customized with text, color and symbols. The viewing window includes a patient-pending curved design that provides 180-degree, all-angle visibility. An optional reflective coating improves visibility in low light conditions. Ideal for facilities where privacy and security are essential.
Such functionality was crucial at the Burton Blatt Institute (BBI) at Syracuse University. Housed in Dineen Hall, the latter underwent renovations, which included the need to change its aluminum frame doors with glass transoms, which could not handle the weight of standard power door operators. BBI selected the Norton 6300 Series operators, which can accommodate doors up to 48 in. wide. These were installed to span the entire opening of the existing aluminum doors, and attach securely to both sides of the frame and header—enabling the university to retain the many existing door frames. In addition, because the 6300 Series have one of the slimmest profiles available, they blend seamlessly with BBI’s existing door frames. Chris Stewart, Syracuse University’s associate director of administration and technical services, highlights another benefit. “Because 6300 operators have built-in relay boards, we avoided the expense of third-party relays to integrate the openers with our access control system.”
A newly designed Gothic Arch roller system borrows design ideas from bullet trains with only the sides of the roller touching the track. This allows for extremely smooth and easy operation regardless of panel size or weight. The patented TwinX enables the system to meet higher wind loads but also conceals the hinges. The panels can move in stacks of 4 or 6, enabling unlimited widths. It offers three sill options with a high-heel resistant feature. JUDGE’S COMMENTS:

Welcome Radiant Climate Mat delivers the advantages of radiant heating and/or cooling within a package that increases affordability and labor-efficiency for mid- and large-scale jobs. Unlike typical radiant tubing installations, which require that individual lengths of tubing be extended and attached to a sub-base, it is a tubing module which permits the installer to simply roll out as many as six equivalent lengths of tubing simultaneously. Advantages over typical installations include reduced installation time, tubing securement method guarantees desired tubing spacing, pre-pressurized tubing eliminates downtime, pre-engineered design taking the guesswork out of installation and no balancing needed due to same circuit lengths. Case in point, the system is having a significant impact on a large job near Sacramento. There, the California Military Dept. is building a 232,000-sq.—ft. facility that when completed, will bring together a variety of demilitarized departments under one roof. A total of 344 Climate Mats, ranging from 20 ft. to 200 ft. in length, are being used. Each mat is 5-ft. wide, so a single roll can cover as much as 1,000 sq. ft. Because of the massive size of the project, it was split into nine sections, some larger than others, depending on the shape and location. In all, 198,022 sq. ft. of Climate Mat will be installed for heating and cooling.

A Yawning Gap Already a soft market prior to COVID’s outbreak, K-12 education has been disrupted beyond any “gap year,” not only in terms of new construction, but also in physical operation, as remote learning is the new norm for now. What lies ahead? by Jim Crockett, editorial director
Over the past 50 years, education construction starts have accounted for an average of one in every five dollars invested in nonresidential buildings. Since 1991, in fact, it’s been the largest dollar value component of nonresidential building in every year but one. However, according to a new report from Dodge Data & Analytics, education starts—which were already showing signs of softness in 2019, as volume of square feet dropped 2%, and dollar value declined 1% from 2018—but now with weakened state and local budget conditions and smaller enrollment numbers due to -19, the repercussions will only continue in 2020 and beyond. Key data points from the Dodge K-12 forecast report for 2021 is as follows:
The economic/fiscal repercussions of -19 will bring square footage down another 7% in 2020 to 130 msf (thousand sq. ft.) and dollar value down 8% to $58 billion. This negative impact will continue into 2021 as education starts dip 2% in both square feet (127 m sq. ft.) and dollars ($57 billion). In 2020, K-12 education construction will decline, but the decline will be milder than other sectors. K-12 construction starts are expected to pull back 8% in both square footage and dollar value in 2020, then essentially flatten. Construction starts for colleges and universities are expected to drop 10% to 13.7 m sq. ft. ,and the dollar value of starts is expected to pull back 16% to $8.9 billion.
Declines in this area will continue through 2021 due to budget issues and construction will dip to a low of 12 million sq. ft. and $7.9 billion in 2021. What‘s clear is that 2020 has been the year of disruption—and the education industry is one that has been heavily affected. Disruption comes in many ways, including ever-changing trends amid generational preferences and ideas. New ways to teach and interact with students drive change in how spaces are designed, and how the next generation is educated. Armstrong Flooring, in its continuing partnership with research firm , offers good, pre- and post-, insight as to identify how and why disruptions are impacting education. On the following pages are ideas to consider that will disrupt and change the education industry.
NEW LIFE “Conversion” may become the buzzword that defines construction in 2020. It certainly did here at the Elementary School Vřesovice in the Czech Republic, which involved the reconstruction of a Baroque rectory. The church wished that the village should not let the whole premises deteriorate, but use it for a purpose—it did, becoming a school and daycare center. To give it new life, the designers, Public Atelier and FUUZE, emphasized the interconnection of individual parts so that their historical value as a complex could be preserved, while the users of the converted facility could feel comfortable and free to use all its parts. Simple cubic shapes, smooth surfaces and distinctive colors characterize the new parts, while simultaneously joining separated parts of the older facility, bringing playfulness and new possibilities of operation and movement. Adaptive Reuse Perhaps the first reality of COVID is that various commercial properties will foreclose. According to Forbes, a silver lining, is that as time goes on, many sellers should be more willing to accept a lower price for their assets. This could lead to redevelopments in the not-so-distant future. This could also be an opportunity for more public projects, such as schools, to come to bear. While not exactly the case of the project above, when a local church property in Czechia became available due to decaying roof trusses and other issues, the church offered the rectory and parish estate to the village of Vřesovice, so long as it was used for a purpose. The municipality found a good one—a school. According to Jiří Markevič with architect Public Atelier, the challenge lied in connecting the dots, literally, in creating a

functional facility. Passages and interconnections of the buildings, which were separated in the past, are now connected and accentuated in color. “It brings playfulness to the complex not only with its colors, but also with new possibilities of operation and movement,” says the architect. New and original historical elements are intertwined. The historical parts are united by a classic plaster façade, a red roof of plain tiles and copper plumbing elements. On the other hand, the simple cubic shapes, smooth surfaces and distinctive colors characterize new parts. According to Gensler, this kind of project hits on two trends: first, capitalizing on legacy buildings; and second, renewing the focus on community, which they say is perhaps the most critical aspect in
rethinking post-COVID schools, as student life has been hit hard by physical distancing. In the new normal, spaces designated for socializing will still serve as critical outlets for enriching campus life. What will change is finding ways to incorporate virtual communities and cultures into physical environments. That said, there are issues in dealing with legacy properties. Gensler’s Todd Heiser notes they don’t have the appropriate amenities, such as modern elevators, and they often don’t separate function in an appropriate way. Still adaptive reuse has a very positive environmental story. Studies, notes the firm, show that the additional operating efficiency, even of a high-performance building, can take up to 80 years to make up for the impact of having built it in the first place.

REWILDING: A WALKING TRACK
Children are spending less and less time outdoors. With excessive screen time and a lack of physical activity becoming a major concern for Generation Alpha (born 2010-2025), parents are encouraging their kids to play outdoors and reconnect with nature. Active adventurers are often immersed in stress-free environments, engaging in child-led outdoor play that can foster risk-taking and independence. It can also future-proof mental health—a 2019 study from Aarhus University revealed that children who spend more time in nature have up to a 55% lower risk of developing psychiatric disorders as an adult. This push to reconnect with nature, coupled with the positive impact of outdoor learning, will see more and more schools opt to implement open air and the outdoors in favor of a traditional classroom. This trend is beginning to emerge with courtyards being added centrally within schools. One project the company has been involved with, features exterior rooms that have garage doors for easy access to the outdoors. And where learning must remain indoors, hardwood visuals are implemented to achieve biophilic design. More schools will continue this design trend, where education spaces prioritize freedom and fun as a design concept, and not just as a nice-to-have.
‘GREENING’ PLAY SPACE In adding outdoor amenities, including walking tracks, San Antonio, Texas’ North East Independent School District opted away from asphalt and other nonpermeable surfaces, and instead employed Porous Pave XL to install ADA-compliant tracks at 44 schools. A highly porous and durable material made, with 50% recycled rubber chips and 50% aggregate mixed on site, the material delivers a more sustainable surface for outdoor recreation resource. Additionally, the project required a surface with superior flexibility so that serviceability cracks, caused by horizontal or vertical movements of the underlying soils due to expansion and contraction, would not create problems. Next Generation Schools Generation Z (born between 1996-2010) are entering the university age with progressive ideals, most notably that 75% of the generation believe there are ways of attaining an education other than by going to college. To respond to this generation demanding a flexible learning environment that’s more tailored to what they want, education spaces, according to Armstrong and its research, will need to be adaptable, flexible, and immerse students in learning experiences. Take the East Baton Rouge Career and Technology Education Center, for example (below). Its focus on a vocational curriculum allows students in the to have a great hands-on experience and learn beyond a traditional classroom. Since best practices for learning environments are rapidly changing, the school was designed to allow flexibility in terms of how rooms are utilized. Spaces can easily be adjusted as curriculum and teaching requirements change, granting the school a unique ability to continually assess and make changes to the learning environment.

Designing for Distance
Making Calm Contagious
COVID-19 has heavily affected the education industry, immediately changing what day-to-day education looks like. Maintaining appropriate distance is a priority in the short term, and may certainly be on the minds of many for quite some time. According to Armstrong’s research, schools are shifting away from completely open plans and using zoning to create separate spaces for different types of work, such as creative collaboration or quiet writing. The consensus has been to reduce low value-add spaces such as those used for only a short period each day or that take up a disproportionate amount of teaching space, and increase high value-add spaces such as specialist, hands-on facilities like labs and music rooms, or agile teaching spaces with flexible and movable furniture and walls. In addition to designing for distance, infection control, notes the manufacturer, is a priority in education spaces and will continue to be a priority for the foreseeable future. Installing quality flooring that is both affordable and easy to clean, will be vital in education settings moving forward.
Nearly half of U.S. departments of education incorporate SEL (social emotional learning) in some way. Despite this, a 2018 study by Allstate Foundation found 51% of U.S. high school students don’t believe their schools do enough to help them deal with stress, with 49% claiming their schools don’t help them understand their emotions. Designing spaces that evoke a sense of calm and wellbeing has been a rising trend, and will continue. Designing biophilic spaces that bring the natural world indoors has a proven ability to improve well-being, and flooring, with a broad color palette of soothing textures and colors, can plays a role in designing these types of calming spaces. More than ever, students are in touch with their senses and concerned with personal wellbeing, and designs will need to follow suit providing additional spaces for solitude and reflection.

HEALTH RESILIENCY According to the engineering team of KAI Enterprises, HVAC upgrades may prove key in combating highly infectious diseases moving forward. Studies suggest that the most unfavorable environment for microorganisms to survive in is when the Relative Humidity (RH) of a space is between 40%-60%. Decreasing the temperature and moisture in an environment, note the consultants, creates a less hospitable environment for microorganisms to grow, as the majority thrive in an RH of 60% or more.

IAQ Considerations As more businesses and facilities across the country begin to reopen following the pandemic shutdown, facility owners and managers are being forced to rethink the indoor air quality of their buildings to minimize the spread of airborne infectious diseases. The experts at St. Louis design-builder KAI Enterprises say making simple modifications, combined with other prevention strategies, will go a long way toward minimizing the virus’ spread and protecting a building’s occupants. “Currently, there isn’t a single strategy recommendation, but there are various control strategies available that can be combined to fight an airborne infectious disease,” said KAI Director of Mechanical Engineering Aleksandar Milenkov, , . The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and have made several recommendations for improving air quality and eradicating potential airborne viruses within building environments. Milenkov says there are several simple upgrades that building owners can make to their systems to accommodate these safety recommendations:
1) Improve Ventilation Increasing outside air and improving ventilation throughout a building will help reduce infection rates. KAI recommends the following modifications: Increase the ventilation rate for the restroom exhaust fans. Increase outside air by 100% to isolation rooms. Increase outside air by adding dedicated outdoor air systems (DOAS). This is the most expensive option, especially for retrofitting existing facilities. The DOAS will decrease the infection rate, improve air quality in the space and provide better control of the temperature and humidity. However, the downside to this is increased energy consumption. Modify the unoccupied operation mode for outside air units to run two hours before occupied times and two hours after occupied times at 100% capacity.

KAI recommends using as high a setting as possible for air filtration and ventilation of the restroom exhaust fans. The filter housing and racks should also be inspected regularly to ensure an appropriate filter fit and to minimize filter bypass. Use highly efficient particle filtration in centralized systems to reduce airborne particles, as well as a filter with a MERV13 or higher rating, if the existing system can support it. Install room-level filtration portable air cleaners equipped with HEPA filters, or portable units with MERV13 filtration, a carbon filter, UV lights and Bipolar Ionization. This will isolate airflow from the rest of the facility and help minimize the virus’ spread.

3) Improve Air Distribution Patterns Controlling the airflow between zones in a building is a viable way to protect building occupants from airborne pathogens. This can be achieved by reevaluating the positioning of supply and exhaust air diffusers and/or dampers and adjusting flow rates to establish measurable pressure differentials. Building owners should also have people occupy “clean” ventilation zones that do not include higherrisk areas such as visitor reception or exercise facilities, if they are open.
4) Improve Temperature and Humidity Studies suggest that the most unfavorable environment for microorganisms to survive in is when the Relative Humidity (RH) is between 40-60%. Decreasing the temperature and moisture in an environment creates a less hospitable environment for microorganisms to grow. The majority thrive in an RH of 60% or more.
5) Utilize Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation (UVGI) Light or Bipolar Ionization (BPI) Using a UVGI light as a supplemental technique to inactivate potential airborne viruses in the upperroom air of common occupied spaces is recommended. The entire ultraviolet (UV) spectrum can kill or inactivate microorganisms, but UV-C energy from 200-280 nm provides the most germicidal effect, with 265 nm recommended as the optimum wavelength. Food for Thought and Dialogue Much of the future of schools in 2021, and the near future, is obscure; what is clear, is that things are changing, and as Gensler notes, in a recent “Dialogue” blog, dependence on community and face-toface interaction is a basic human need. In the “new normal,” they note spaces designated for gathering will still be critical. What will change is finding ways to incorporate virtual communities and cultures into physical environments.
Adaptive reuse remains an exciting option, as again, Gensler notes businesses and tenants are thinking differently than they have before about adaptive reuse spaces, as older buildings have become more attractive as they tend to carry a certain “authenticity.” Challenges remain, notably the fact that these buildings were not designed for the desired function. Still, according to the EPA, the built environment creates over half a billion tons of debris annually—90% of this from demolition. Good reason to rethink the tried-and-true equation.
The Athens retrofit provided the school the opportunity to create a new main entrance that was clearly visible, and gave the entire school a modern façade.

METAL ADDS MODERN LOOK Façade retrofit is an effective option to consider as buildings are upgraded or converted to continue their service. Such was the case at Athens High School in Athens, Texas, which required a mix of renovation and new construction to bridge old and new buildings. To create a modern design, metal was chosen. Installed on the school were 10,800 sq. ft. of 24-gauge 12-in. PAC-CLAD Flush Panels in White and Silver finish, 17,500 sq. ft. of 24-gauge 12-in. Flush Soffit panels in White finish, and 5,500 sq. ft. of PAC-3000CS Composite Panel finished in a custom maroon school color. Cost was an issue, but ultimately the school felt the investment was made for the metal’s ability to create a different look and to signify something special. The MFI System uses unique thermally isolated intermittent clips–called Thermabrackets–that can be spaced all the way up to 32-in. O.C. Rails may be attached to the ThermaBracket in a vertical or horizontal orientation. Lowell Justice Center Lowell, Mass. Illuminated isn’t usually what comes to mind when thinking about a highly secure courthouse. But a daylight-filled space was the exact goal here. “Interior glazing, combined with glazed public staircases, and a glass curtainwall, all work in concert to create a sense of openness, letting ample daylight permeate the interior spaces of the courtrooms, public areas and even judge’s chambers and deliberation rooms, which typically rely on artificial lighting,” notes project architect Clair Colburn, , +, Senior Associate, Finegold Alexander Architects. The 265,000-sq.-ft. facility is located adjacent to the Lowell National Historical Park and within the Hamilton Canal Innovation District. In fact, it is the cornerstone of the area’s redevelopment master plan. The seven-story building houses 17 courthouses servicing the state’s Superior, District, Housing, Juvenile and Probate and Family courts, as well as a variety of non-court functions. Designed to use 40% less energy than the local code, the center’s chilled-beam technology, displacement air ventilation, raised floors in the courtrooms, lighting controls, high-performance glass, and rainscreen all contributed to Platinum certification—the first Massachusetts state courthouse in the United States to achieve this. Wheaton Library and Community Recreation Center, Silver Spring, Md. Co-locating a library, park, recreation center and bookstore in one property was a valuable solution to the limited land resources problem. A first in Montgomery County, the 92,000-sq.-ft. multi-use facility offers a variety of services in one location.

How does a 21stcentury library engage a diverse population in a meaningful way and provide robust amenities for a county with a shortage of available land on which to build? The challenge was to deliver a facility to help solve the inequities of outdated facilities and, more importantly, help create a community hub

that fosters inclusion, equity and diversity. The solution shaped itself into the co-location of a library, a recreation center, a bookstore and underground parking under one roof—leaving green areas for outdoor recreation. Flexibility, durability and low maintenance were the key guiding
principles for this project. “The concept celebrates the multiculturalism of the district through the use of vivid colored panels, reminiscent of African, Hispanic and Caribbean art. This direct request from the community is rich in symbolism and meaning, acting as a metaphor for the ‘melting pot’ that is Wheaton,” says
Amy Upton , Fellow, Principal, Grimm + Parker Architects. This LEED Gold facility fosters mind and body health by the cross-pollination of the various program spaces. Design elements encourage staff to get up and move throughout the day to “walk the talk” of health and wellness initiatives.
Communication and collaboration was critical. “Collaboration started way before a single line was drawn,” says Upton. “Starting with a collaborative spirit in mind gave everyone a chance to be a part of creating the story with the community, ” says Upton. Due to COVID, as schools in the area resumed with virtual learning,
the community has taken advantage of the library’s free WIFI and set up tables and chairs in the below-grade parking garage—forming micro pods. “We have seen the building adapt to serve the needs of the community above and beyond what it was originally designed and intended to do,” says Upton.

ONSITE POWER
The building meets the county’s goal for resiliency in a couple of ways: 1) a generator provides backup power for two-thirds of the building; 2) the building is photovoltaic-ready for 25,000 sq. ft. of roof set aside for future on-site PV leasing. In preparation for that eventuality, the design team created conduit pathways from the inverter locations on the roof, to the expanded panel locations in the garage electric room. Provisions were also made in the switchgear specs, and rough-ins for a combined heat and power engine system were installed to allow the building to be energized as a microgrid when the PV arrays are put in place. PV will not only save energy daily, it will allow the facility to be 100% functional during times of black out or “islanding” mode.

Through the articulation of volumes and color both on the exterior and interior, the building embraces and celebrates the great diversity of the community. The massing and character of the building helps break down the scale and engage the neighborhood and surrounding context. Brightly-colored phenolic resin panels line the primary façades to add interest and color to the exterior. The exterior materials for this building are durable, low maintenance and vandal resistant. High-density masonry units in Bowie Blend provide a natural feel to the exterior of the library and recreation spaces. On the interior, ground faced masonry units bring this masonry feel inside to the lobby, corridors and into the gymnasium. The variety of hues on the masonry walls helps to break down the scale of the large facility and relate to the residential context surrounding the site. Careful consideration was paid to optimizing acoustics and improving productivity and occupant health.

LOOKING FORWARD AS A SUSTAINABILITY PARTNER
The compact footprint of the co-located facility offers the community a large green space, playground and park area that successfully conserved several beloved historic trees. In this way, the new library facility is a sustainability partner; it fosters community resilience and a culture of sharing, a true sustainable example of a future to which to look forward.
Water Management The collection and treatment of stormwater was important, with 95% of precipitation managed onsite. The design team worked with the county to assess and improve downstream storm water management (SWM) facilities. There are 23 environmentally sensitive devices—bioswales, micro-bioretention facilities, rain gardens and stormwater quality and quantity control devices— surrounding the building and park site to slow down stormwater and rainfall, filter and treat, and slowly recharge the aquifer underground. Ten of these are
constructed SWM quantity devices cast out of concrete adjacent to the building to collect stormwater from internal roof leaders, slow the water down and filter it. They are planted with native and drought-resistant grasses and shrubs and give a soft, natural buffer around the building’s south side and along the pedestrian ramp from the park to the plaza. Two, 1,500-sq.-ft. intensive vegetative roofs are planted on a portion of the library and game room roofs. These living quilts are visible from the second floor, giving visitors dynamic views of nature from the central bridge of the building.

HVAC Predicted energy cost savings is 21% over baseline with a predicted energy usage index of 69 kBTU/sf/year. The total predicted annual energy consumption for the project is 1,058,181 kWh/year of electricity and 27,674 therms/year of natural gas. This building is not able to get an Energy Star Target Finder score because the tool does not support the primary building type of the project building. Reduced energy consumption was accomplished by adopting a four-pipe high efficiency variable air volume system with heat recovery and free cooling outdoor air economizer cycle, with the chilled water system utilizing two magnetic bearing, variable speed and water cooled chillers. Heating and cooling systems and their associated controls were designed and zoned to enable the building to operate at less than full occupancy without conditioning the entire building. The mechanical system is designed to exceed the International Energy Conservation Code-2015 and the ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2013. LED lighting accounts for approximately 95% of the fixtures in this facility and onsite. Lowvelocity, high-volume ceiling fans in the gymnasium provide thermal comfort and supplement conditioned air supply. A centralized BAS system manages the HVAC system, and radiant flooring is featured in the children’s area, along with snowmelt in the exterior entry plaza.

Optimizing natural daylight and thermal comfort were two fundamental design strategies influencing the process. The southern exposure of the library and tall ceilings of the adult and children’s library provide ample natural daylight. Glare is controlled with large horizontal roof overhangs and sunshades on the south, deep vertical fins and angled panels on the west and electrically-operated translucent roller shades on the interior. Daylight harvesting controls help to dim the interior lights and three, large circular skylights evoke the sun in a playful way in the children’s area, and bring daylight deeper into the space. Large expanses of insulated, low-E glazing walls are fritted with ceramic patterns to diffuse the light and in one corner of the children’s room a multicolored acrylic panel sculpture creates colorful shadow play. Glassy areas not only provide daylighting, but invite the public in, as well as monitor activities. Through the use of glass, the building will be easier to supervise, secure and provide natural light for the users and staff.

CHALLENGE: Established in 1970 on traditional Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc territory, Thompson Rivers
University (TRU) in Kamloops, Canada has dedicated its efforts to empowering their student body to achieve academic excellence in a diverse, inclusive environment. The Kamloops, BC campus offers both hands-on and digital learning options as well as individualized student services designed to complement its 200 available study programs. The university’s Old Main building, housing multiple classrooms and faculty offices, scheduled a multi-million dollar renovation to begin in 2018. This project centered on optimizing the facility’s layout to create two new classrooms while upgrading the existing technology, lighting, acoustics and air quality. It was also crucial the rooms were modified to support different teaching and learning styles, with ample space to reconfigure desk and seating arrangements if necessary. INFLUENCE: TRU collaborated with Stantec Architecture, Erv Parent and Jordans Flooring Outlet to ensure
the Old Main renovation would be able to accommodate the needs of its students and staff. A key part of the update involved selecting new flooring that could endure the stress of consistent foot traffic and could be installed quickly and efficiently to conserve time. SOLUTION: “Altro Cantata was chosen mostly because the construction schedule was so tight and there was
little time to remove huge amounts of existing VCT tile,” explained Crystal Schock, Architectural Technologist at Stantec. “This flooring could be applied directly over existing flooring with no adhesive.” Creating maximum impact with minimal downtime, Altro Cantata was installed using Altro’s revolutionary tape system, allowing it to be welded and walked on the same day over blank substrates as well as existing flooring products. This range utilizes Altro’s advanced cleaning technology to reduce dirt pick-up and staining, improving the floor’s scuff resistance while making it easy to clean. In addition to using Altro Cantata throughout the Old Main’s corridors and stairways, the firm also chose Altro Walkway 20 to provide essential slip resistance in the facility’s restrooms. This versatile, hardwearing slip-resistant flooring utilizes the same heatwelded seams as Altro Cantata, which prevent bacteria and moisture from accumulating below the surface during routine cleaning and disinfecting.

CHALLENGE: A former hotel, Residence Palace (Europa) in Brussels, is
being renovated to serve as the headquarters of the European Parliament. The significant renovations to the facility include a redesign of the old building, as well as a facility expansion to add offices, meeting rooms and washrooms, all of which must uphold the historical architecture of the space. INFLUENCE: As the center of the European Union (EU) community, its where
dignitaries meet to collaborate and work on challenges and opportunities impacting EU countries. SOLUTION: To preserve the sophistication of the facility, Alpaco and ASI
created elegant washroom cubicles designed without pedestals rather than walled-off as individual restrooms. With so many visitors to facility, the goal was to make the cubicles as appealing, as they are functional, and easy to clean. To meet these needs, Alpaco installed 350 custom cubicles that create the illusion of an individual environment with guaranteed privacy. Unique to this project, the lighting within each cubicle is behind the structural cross bracing. Additionally, the cubicles feature a duct paneling system that hides the plumbing in each individual stall. American Specialties, Inc. provided the stainless-steel accessories, including toilet tissue and paper towel dispensers. The new washrooms showcase elegance, privacy and functionality without compromise. By partitioning an open space, Alpaco provided a cost-effective solution with the opportunity to expand upon the washrooms in the future.

Warm, Inviting Look of Wood Draws Students to University Library The new Charles Library at Temple University serves as a central point of intersection between students, faculty, staff and the surrounding community.
CHALLENGE
“An early goal of the library design was for it to be an organizing element and a way to pull students to the library from multiple parts of the campus,” says Chad Carpenter, project manager, Snohetta. “The goal was also for the physical space of the library to be a collector and a warm, comforting place that everybody would understand as the center of campus.” INFLUENCE
Between the exterior and interior ceiling and wall applications, over 50,000 sq. ft. of western red cedar panels were installed. Western red cedar was chosen because of its inherent flexibility. “Western red cedar has three qualities that made a big difference in the domes,” Carpenter explains. “It’s suitable for use outside, so the inside and outside can be the same wood. It’s flexible, so it’s not particularly hard to bend, and it has an incredible variation in color tone.”
CURVED
The central dome in the atrium features a curved oculus that allows light to filter into the lobby from the uppermost floor. The lobby was designed to be a warm, comforting space that would draw students to the library from multiple parts of the campus. An arched entrance lined with linear western red cedar panels extends into the lobby from the exterior.
SOLUTION
To impart an inviting, natural, the design team chose custom WoodWorks Panelized Linear Systems from Armstrong Ceiling & Wall Solutions. Three arched entrances lined with linear western red cedar panels extend into the lobby from the exterior and form a three-story domed atrium featuring a variety of different curves and intersections. The central dome in the atrium features a curved oculus that allows light to filter into the lobby from the uppermost floor. The unique geometry that characterizes each of the domes was achieved by gently bending the wood panels and installing them in a custom curved framing system. “The primary dome is a revolved ellipsoid which allowed it to be made out of a limited number of different panels,” the architect said. “The rest of the system was made out of single-curvature geometries, which allowed them to be made using the same shaped panel.” The oculus is the only area of the ceiling where the panels are not bent. “The oculus is the place where the curvature is the tightest in one direction but the planks themselves are all straight,” he added. “The curvature is only in the backer.” According to Carpenter, the key to the clarity of the ceiling design was the precision Armstrong was able to bring to the panel manufacturing process and the digital coordination with the framing contractor.

Medical Center Becomes Signature Building on Hospital Campus Architects chose several building envelope solutions during the planning phase so that owners could achieve several key objectives: creating a signature building for the entire campus and contributing to LEED certification for green buildings.
CHALLENGE
Mercy Health Muskegon Medical Center in Muskegon, Mich., a $271-million, 10-story health care facility, doubles the amount of floor space for medical staff to treat patients. The facility boasts nearly 300 private patient rooms, serves as the new home for the emergency department, and houses stateof-the-art surgical units. For the building’s exterior, designers sought to create visual interest while also delivering versatility and optimal performance. SOLUTION
Intercept from , a modular metal wall panel, became the face of the building, covering almost all of the outer walls. The design team used a customized program to create a random pattern of colors for the exterior wall, which contributed dramatically to the building’s curb appeal. “We ended up going with three different colors [for Intercept],” said Mike Andric, associate vice president and healthcare architect at HGA Architects. “They looked the same when you’re looking at small samples, but in the field, you can really detect the difference between the colors of the panels.” “Intercept enables designers to create architecturally pleasing exterior façades along with the protection afforded by a rainscreen,” said Julie Schessler, product manager, . “The solid metal substrate is non-combustible and is compliant with NFPA 285, a test to determine the fire propagation characteristics of an exterior wall unit.”

Contractors installed nearly 100,000 sq. ft. of CENTRIA’S MetalWrap behind the Intercept panels. It provides thermal, air, water and vapor barriers in a composite assembly.
Intercept also carries the Declare Label, a designation it achieved in 2020. Developed by the International Living Future Institute, a Declare Label serves as third-party certification, demonstrating how the product can contribute to a building that boasts sustainability credentials. Contractors also installed nearly 100,000 sq. ft. of CENTRIA’s MetalWrap behind the Intercept panels. The team consulted with experts from Walker Glass, Vitro Glass and the American Bird Conservancy to consider a range of glass options to reduce bird collisions while enhancing the bright, open aesthetic of the new space. “The National Aviary’s bird experts were integral to designing a façade that meets bird-safe standards,” said Pitassi. “Given the desire for transparency in the building envelope and the need to complement the site’s natural environment, maximizing the use of glass was an imperative.”

Merging Community and Privacy at the University of Minnesota Located on the east bank of the Mississippi River, the second oldest residence hall at the University of Minnesota recently became its second largest. The 90-year-old Pioneer Hall opened its doors to the 2019 freshman and sophomore class after completing $104.5 million in renovations. A BEAUTIFUL BLEND

CHALLENGE
Now more than 40% larger than its original size, Pioneer Hall boasts a historically sensitive, but modern design within a 252,391-sq.-ft. facility supplying 756 beds to students across five floors. This includes preserving the building’s historic Georgian Revivalstyle exterior, while gutting an interior that previously consisted of adjoining townhomes that were exceedingly difficult to navigate and failed to connect on every level. Providing the architectural support, electrical, mechanical and structural design services for the two-year renovation project was , which was also tasked with creating a mixed-gender, engaging atmosphere that would draw students into the community environment. Architects of St Louis, Mo. were the design-architects, developing several options in search of a design that best synchronized the project budget and the needs. CRITERIA
The design of the building’s mixed-use, gender-neutral bathrooms, provide the comforts of a separate bathroom with showers for each group of approximately 30-39 students per community sharing two community bathrooms, supplemented with singleuser bathrooms. Overall, this included the installation and specification of 26 community baths emphasizing privacy on all five coed floors. SOLUTION
Sara Koester, a principal at KWK Architects, knew where to turn for the stylish and private floor-to-

ceiling toilet and shower systems needed for Pioneer Hall. “We worked directly with Scranton Products in 2011 to create partitions for the recently-constructed, 600-bed 17th Avenue Residence Hall,” explains Koester. “It provided the facility with bathrooms and showers that merged striking aesthetics and lowmaintenance with easy-to-clean features, privacy and comfort.” Made of sturdy HDPE for commercial and institutional environments, Aria Partitions were developed by Scranton Products to add an enhanced level of comfort and privacy as well as elegance, warmth, and charm to virtually any enclosed or private room. This includes removing sightlines with a continuous edge-mounted hinge and greatly improving aesthetics with a design that doesn’t use face mounted hardware like traditional partition systems. Since both the toilet and shower doors look alike, TKDA and KWK also worked with a signage shop to develop customized signage that designate use and occupancy, inserted into coordinated recesses in the door panels, and created by Scranton Products. “We were looking for a new architectural language that fit with the old,” adds Brian Morse, a senior architect at TKDA. “The result was a residence filled with communal spaces offering varying scales of privacy, comfort and engagement. The Aria partitions fit perfectly into this design with partitions that ensured the highest level of privacy along with a non-conforming style that really helps Pioneer Hall stand out from the typical, uniform residence halls found on most college campuses.”

Unique Façade Created for Philadelphia Condos Includes Wall Panels Architects, like ISA Architects on the OTTO Brewerytown, are getting very creative with using multiple metal wall panel profiles on their projects, along with combining a variety of colors, panel orientation, and both solid and perforated panels.
CHALLENGE
OTTO Brewerytown is a two-building, two-phase project, with a total of 52 high-end, high-tech condo units. It is located in a rapidly developing neighborhood, just five minutes to Philadelphia’s Center City. Phase one was completed last year, which consisted of 20 units, and in February of this year, ground was broken on phase two, for 32 more units. CRITERIA
OTTO BREWERYTOWN
The building’s name OTTO is in tribute to the architect, Otto Wolf. His innovative designs of breweries, bottling houses, storage facilities, and more, transformed a neighborhood into an iconic area.
“The design concept for OTTO was to organize an existing warehouse plus two new multi-family podium buildings around a courtyard in a way that refers to the site’s adjacency to Fairmount Park— one of Philadelphia’s great natural and recreational assets,” said Gregory W. Hallquist, senior vice president, Development and Construction with Equinox Management and Construction. The outside perimeter façades of the new buildings were conceived as being more neutral with a surprise courtyard experience that refers to the natural dimensions of the context. Pops of green along major entry points and terrace moments help link the two façade conditions and make a coherent whole out of the building. SOLUTION
Interface Studio Architects in Philadelphia collaborated closely with ATAS to select products that would achieve the design and aesthetic goals of the project, while also meeting budget parameters. ATAS’ custom Grand C panels in three colors, Patina Green, Silversmith, and Brilliant Green, in 0.032 aluminum, and Versa-Seam panels in Silversmith in 0.040 aluminum, were used to create an eye-catching design for the building’s exterior.

“Both buildings are five stories and are wood frame over a first-floor podium of steel and concrete. In selecting a façade material, we are extremely focused on the building envelope and achieving a watertight solution. We also consider aesthetics, durability, maintenance requirements and affordability. Over the years, we have analyzed a wide variety of material for use on our façades, and metal siding has become our material of choice. In fact, we just broke ground on a 50-unit apartment building in Brewerytown that also incorporates ATAS’ metal siding products,” says Hallquist.

In need of more space to accommodate its rapid growth, SailPoint’s new workspace nearly doubled the company’s previous Austin office space, which had been spread out across two buildings. According to the Austin Business Journal, the Austin-based staff expanded from 124 people in 2017 to nearly 500 in 2019, representing half of its global employees. On the crossroads of re-engaging in a postpandemic world, charting a new path forward in the wake of this summer’s social justice protests, and continuing in the fight against climate change, the selection of the American Society of Landscape Architects’ new CEO comes at an opportune time. In search of an individual equipped to tackle the major environmental, health and societal issues of the day, seems to have done quite well in recruiting Torey Carter-Conneen. While his first stint in

the design and planning industry, Carter-Conneen brings along 25 years of experience and expertise in strategic organizational development and administrative leadership, and a fresh perspective. “I was drawn to this opportunity because it was clear to me that is a purposedriven organization whose commitment to its members and their craft is fueled by an understanding that the science and art of landscape architecture has broad societal reach and can truly change communities and
people’s lives,” he states in an interview with Architectural Products. With the pandemic and racial protests shining a spotlight on the social injustice and inequality in both the natural and built environment, and society in general, Carter-Conneen believes that is strongly positioned “to lead in this moment as we re-imagine, design and develop environments and public spaces that allow us all to re-engage in our communities safely and equitably with a spirit of uplift and environmental change.” For
example, he is interested in promoting the profession to students who are passionate about giving back to their communities and interested in their professional work aligning with their personal values on issues such as climate change, social equity and public health.
