FRUIT CAKE is a half-baked attempt of a pun, intended to reflect the fruity and sweet nature of the artwork. I don’t even like real fruitcake, but This show started as a spontaneous goal after my 29th birthday, a sort of pre-30’s “mid-life crisis”. My 20s have been spent struggling to take myself more seriously as an artist, and I didn’t want to enter a new decade following those same habits. So, I rented gallery space and compiled a small collection of my favourite pieces from over the past 10 years. Every step of the process of preparing for this event has been so fun, further affirming how work can’t feel like work if you’re doing something you love. FRUIT CAKE explores indulgence and play in queerness, and there is some fruit involved. There isn’t much thought behind some of the pieces – some of them were made for fun. But being in a creative flow state feels as playful and euphoric as exploring gender and sexuality, sharing a core emotion of freedom and satisfaction. I hope you have fun experiencing it! Bryn Beausoleil (they/them) Texan, b. 1996 Bryn is an artist and professional designer based in Brighton, UK. They moved to Brighton in 2021, after growing up in Texas. Bryn works in digital art and traditional mediums such as acrylic and gouache. Most of their work features people, often intimate portraits using bold and limited colour palettes. The expression of queerness has especially become an important subject of their most recent work. Painting trans and queer individuals as desirable and celebrated feels like important work in creating the representation they wish to see more of in the world.
