STATEMENT

Maya Bansal plays on the societal superficiality of ‘beauty’ to capture audiences and bring attentiontothehousethatisonfire.

Using data and facts in her artwork to present information clearly, she aims to make her works as accessible as possible, enabling her messages to reach further and be more easily deciphered. She works with various media, including ceramics, metal, and glass, as well as media that ignite a more visceral reaction - such as sound and olfactory elements. Bansal captures the essence of a fairytale, embedding grave subject matters within enchanting visualnarratives.

She positions her work to raise important issues as one would in conversation to whisper ratherthanshout easingintomoretensesubjectsvigilantly.Todoso, sheblendsmodernist and postmodernist ideologies in her artworks to create debates between optimism and scepticism. Interpretations of works grow and evolve through engagement and begin to informoneanother actingascatalystsforsimilarconversations.

Arranging her work with the golden ratio and chaos theory in mind, she reflects its universal structure back at those who already possess it. Being foundational, its structure reverberates through consciousness. Harnessing this, she creates an unconscious alignment between the work and the viewer using that alignment to tap into an empathetic muscle, almost recreating elements of an experience regarding the subject matter, enabling audiences to empathise. Aiming to snowball and help promote change and extinguish the fire.

An Essence of Chaos

An Essence of Chaos is conceived through the lens of chaos theory - a space where the spiritual and the scientific converge

Bansal proposes that beneath apparent disorder lies a hidden structure, and it is within this structure that the work situates itself By echoing fractal geometries (patterns embedded in both nature and human cognition) the sculpture aligns with the viewer's own ingrained chaotic framework. This familiarity operates instinctively, engaging something primal and intuitive.

As an evolving theory in material form, the work explores transformation: biological, social, and ideological. Created during 2020-2021 amid the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement, the sculpture engages with ideas of diversity, multiplicity, and coexistence

Chaos here is not destruction, but abundance.

The sculpture embodies a tension between brutalism and delicacy, exploring femininity through contrast. An exposed industrial metal armature asserts strength and structural resilience, while porcelain forms cascade across its surface in an organic wave. These porcelain elements are shaped through a process akin to direct carving, translated into sculptural porcelain practice.

Their forms resist singular definition - viewers often recognise flowers, marcescent leaves, coral, fungi - natural entities that exist in cycles of growth, decay, and regeneration. Material transformation is central to the work's lifespan The steel structure is designed to age; oxidation gradually produces red and orange rusts, staining and colouring the sculpture over time. This corrosion is not deterioration but evolution a visible record of time passing. Just as identities, societies, and ecosystems continuously shift, the sculpture refuses stasis.

By revealing the industrial armature beneath a wave of organic forms, An Essence of Chaos presents strength and beauty not as opposites, but as interdependent forces, where chaos is generated to a site of continual becoming
