WINTER WEATHER CLOSES SCHOOLS

Dallas ISD and all of the school district’s in the DFW metroplex are closed due to very cold weather from up North, ice, and snow. School is planning on reopening on Thursday January 29, 2026. On Friday, January 23, 2026 we all went to school. It rained and throughout the day the temperature really dropped. We had no idea that it was about to get extremely cold and over 1 inch of snow and ice was about to fall throughout the metroplex. All in all we are glad to have been out of school but we are prepared and ready to go back. We are not sure if we will be out again during this winter season but if we are we will be sure to keep all of our classmates current with the student newspaper.

BACK TO SCHOOL

After being out of school for several days due to a snow storm how do you get back into the game? Well number one, realize that a break from school is just that - a break from school School is not out and college classes are still in session. To keep focused students must find a way to stay connected, read assignments, and catch up on work. Snow days are great ways to make up work.

DAVID W. CARTER COLLEGIATE ACADEMY CONTINUES TO PROVIDE INSTRUCTION THROUGH POD CAST AND OTHER METHODS. COLLEGE STUDENTS CONTINUE TO WORK ON MODULES AND COMPLETE THEIR COLLEGE ASSIGNMENTS WHILE SCHOOLS ARE CLOSED. EVEN THOUGH SCHOOLS ARE CLOSED THE STUDENTS PREPARE FOR RETURNING BACK TO SCHOOL.

KEEP WORKING WHEN SCHOOL IS OUT!

A great way to keep working when school is out is to stay connected with classmates, and teachers. Check you google classroom, and or website that you use in class Next, connect with classmates through student led podcast and other media outlets. Students sometimes continue to post content during breaks. College students be sure to log into your college classes and work on modules Getting caught up with all your work is a great strategy to implement prior to returning back to school Remember, that school is not out and it is very important to do your best to keep current with the learning. Also, know that when school reopens a lot of school work is on the way.

STAAR TEST

One of the most important test in the State of Texas is the STAAR test. This exam starts in grade 3 and ultimately is required before students are able to graduate from High School To graduate from High School, students must take and pass English I, English II, Algebra I, Biology, and US History. This test is administered during the Spring Semester.

THIS SEMESTER STUDENTS WILL TAKE AND COMPLETE THE STAAR TEST FOR BIOLOGY, ENGLISH 1, ALGEBRA 1, ENGLISH II, AND US HISTORY.

RETURNING BACK TO SCHOOL WITH A FOCUS ON STAAR

As we return to school, we are encouraging all students to focus on Mastering the STAAR test. Mastering the STAAR test simply requires us to master the TEKS To master STAAR let’s all commit to coming to school daily, doing our work, listening to the teacher, not disrupting the class, asking questions, and participate in class. The STAAR test is a very important exam and as a campus we must really take this test serious and prepare As a campus we did a really good job on ACPs and as a campus we will do a really good job on the STAAR test. Tutoring is offered Be sure to get with your teacher for more details regarding tutoring.

SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS

We have missed the State Title over the last few years by only a few games That will not be the case this year. The entire team is focused and prepared for whatever challenge is thrown their way The varsity team is outstanding and we also have a great junior varsity team up and coming Expect great basketball from David W. Carter for the next few years. Oh yes, you want to know about the most recent game? We won Join us for the next basketball game in our new gym I hope to see you there Go Carter Cowboys.

David W. Carter has the best basketball team in Dallas. Our team specializes in team work and moving the ball. We have great guards and students that can score baskets. Coach Love and staff do a really great job preparing the team for the game. James states that Coach Love always gets us to focus on the game of basketball and let everything else simply melt away. For a brief moment we are able to escape school work, work, and other responsibilities and simply ball.

MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR

Growing up in the 21 Century has its benefits. One of those benefits is that I get a chance to attend the David W Carter High School. If you look at the pictures on the wall you will clearly see that the demographics of our school has changed over time. I am glad to be able to attend school, eat at different restaurants, and walk through the front door.

MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR AND MANY OF CIVIL RIGHTS ACTIVISTS MADE IT POSSIBLE FOR MANY OF USE TODAY TO ENJOY THE FREEDOMS THAT WE HAVE TODAY. I HAVE THE FREEDOM TO ATTEND DAVID W. CARTER HIGH SCHOOL AND ATTEND COLLEGE WHILE IN HIGH SCHOOL. THANK YOU TO ALL THOSE THAT HELPED TO MAKE IT POSSIBLE.

WHAT MLK DAY MEANS

I plan to continue to make a difference in the community. As I reflect on what Martin Luther King, Jr means to me - I am reminded of the DNA molecule. You cannot see the DNA molecule It is inside the nucleus. It is directing the cell to function and the cell helps my body to body. Everyone has DNA This tells me that each and every last one of us matter and can make a difference If we stay positive, and continue to develop our talents and gifts - we too will be able to change the world for the best. When you think about MLK Day, remember the DNA. You cannot see it but it is working on your behalf just like many of us did not meet MLK but the work that he did makes it possible for us to enjoy some of our privileges today

DALLAS POLICE VISIT

DALLAS POLICE DEPARTMENT ASSISTANT

It is not often that you get the opportunity to meet with and talk to a police officer

Have you ever had the opportunity to speak with an officer? If you have not met with an officer, what types of questions do you think you would ask? Maybe, why did you take on this job? What are some of your responsibilities as an officer? How do you handle people that commit crimes and must be taken to jail? These questions are all tough questions but fortunately the group that attended the meeting with the Dallas Police Department were able to hear the answers and received opportunities for mentorships We want to thank you Officer Shead and team for taking the time to meet with us here at David W Carter High School.

One of the pathways for the David W Carter Collegiate Academy is Criminal Justice. This pathway prepares you to enter the law enforcement field Students have the opportunity to become police officers, private investigators, and other job opportunities in the criminal justice field.

The Dallas Police Department has an ongoing partnership with David W Carter High School and provide education, workshops, and mentoring opportunities

DOWNTOWN FT. WORTH

What’s really cool about Fort Worth? It is friendly, and fun. These pictures were taken in Sundance Square prior to the ice and snow storm Fort Worth is a very beautiful place. If you want something a little different to do then I will recommend that you visit Fort Worth, Texas. Travel downtown and look around. Visit some of the historic buildings and sites Be sure to eat some good food down town as well. There are plenty of restaurants If you like pizza, burgers, or a sit down meal - it doesn’t matter. All of the food is very good. We are encouraging all students to get to know your city and its surrounding. Find out an interesting fact about your city and its surroundings and share with your teacher and class. Let’s explore DFW. Note, be sure to explore after the snow and ice

The DFW Metroplex includes Dallas, Fort Worth, Arlington, and many of smaller communities. Millions of people live in DFW. Each city in DFW has its own claim to fame. This newspaper will focus on the city of Fort Worth Fort Worth reminds me of a country town. In the stock yards you will still find cattle and very old restaurants. The buildings also look like something you would see in a western movie.
