Can happiness truly be designed, regulated, or controlled by human intention?

Little Joe: Can We Design Happiness?

Stage Design Project “Little Joe” is an immersive theatre work reinterpreted from the film Little Joe, questioning the nature of true happiness. The project explores ethical questions surrounding the human desire for control, portraying individuals who oscillate between a state of artificially induced, “perfect” happiness and an imperfect happiness that exists beyond control, accompanied by uncertainty and vulnerability. Through this tension, the work raises fundamental questions about the origins of human anxiety toward losing control and ultimately asks:

Participatory display

In post-theatrical stage design, the audience is no longer a passive observer but becomes part of the performance itself. Drawing from this approach, the project applies theatrical immersion to display design, creating an immersive experience in which viewers enter and engage with the space—though not at a 1:1 scale—as active participants within the narrative.

Prologue

The Paradox of Change, begins with the insight that the opposing concepts of perfection and imperfection are deeply intertwined with human growth. Change is essential to development, yet it is rarely linear or predictable. While change often opens new possibilities and sheds what is outdated, it also brings with it uncertainty and unexpected outcomes.

The Cocoon

At the heart of this work is an amorphous cocoon, symbolizing limitless possibilities for transformation. Ultrasonic sensors trigger random shifts as visitors approach, making the cocoon unpredictably morph.

Net

The mesh space nonlinearly reveals the accumulated traces of change.

As the audience approaches the sensor, its response varies randomly depending on the distance.

a

Ultrasonic sensors

When a visitor approaches, the ultrasonic sensor detects the person.

bTransforming Coccon

In response to human movement, the cocoon changes shape in an amorphous way, questioning the viewer's expectations of change.
