In the spirit of fostering leadership skills and co-educational collaborative growth, the Year 4 and 5 students from Scotch College and St Hilda’s Anglican School for Girls embark on an exciting two-year journey together.
In Year 4 the programme focuses on building teamwork, communication, and collaborative skills. Through shared activities across both Scotch and St Hilda’s campuses, students have the opportunity to get to know one another while learning to listen, express ideas clearly and work effectively with a wider range of peers. The programme encourages students to appreciate different perspectives, strengths, and ways of thinking, supporting balanced teamwork and creative problem-solving. In doing so, it helps break down assumptions, promotes confidence and inclusion, fostering positive relationships and friendships.
In Year 5 the Compass formal component commences. Students work towards earning their first Compass Award and badge, with a formal ceremony held at the end of the year to present the awards.
The Compass Award is a non-competitive, personal development programme for children between the ages of 10 and 18. Throughout the year, students work collaboratively to plan and complete a personalised range of meaningful activities across four key areas:
Health
Building Resilience, health and wellbeing through activities that strengthen mental and physical fitness
Skills
Supporting personal growth by developing skills, knowledge and interests for both academic and real-world settings
Citizenship
Inspiring awareness, compassion and leadership through meaningful social and environmental engagement, locally and globally
Adventure
Encouraging curiosity, initiative, adaptability and teamwork through challenges beyond comfort zones, including outdoor, cultural and group experiences
Total Hours (Ex Adventure)
Year 5s will be working towards obtaining Level 1 throughout the year. Level’s 2-6 can be pursued independently.
As students progress through the programme they develop lifelong skills, resilience and selfconfidence, supporting their growth both in and beyond the classroom. Along the way, they are encouraged to contribute positively to their community while recognising and celebrating their individual growth and achievements.
