THE ALPHA PHI ALPHA GENERAL PRESIDENT My Dear Brothers, Family Members and Guests, It is my great pleasure to welcome you to our 102nd Anniversary Celebration and 88th General Convention. I invite each of you to experience the outstanding time awaiting in the “City of Fountains.” A tremendous amount of work has taken place to ensure that our convention is informative, inspiring and enjoyable.
The agenda of this year’s convention is in alignment with our Strategic Planning, it takes a holistic approach to equipping us with the tools, tips and techniques necessary to ascertain and maintain the next level of leadership and service. As such, a series of workshops have been designed around important concepts to stimulate dialogue within the brotherhood. Inside the exhibition hall, brothers and their guests will be able to partake of the information provided by our College Life to Corporate Life Initiative (C2C), National Alliance Partners and Health Initiative partners. During our business sessions, we will make critical decisions that will shape the leadership and direction of our fraternity. We will pause to enjoy the programs and events that are designed to provide quality time with our families. As part of our civic duty, we will partake in one of our national programs entitled “Project Alpha.”
This year’s theme “Developing Leaders for Service and Advocacy,” is taken from our Mission Statement, “Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., develops leaders, promotes brotherhood and academic excellence, while providing service and advocacy for our communities”, it emphasizes that we as a fraternity become the change in the enrichment of bettering our communities. It is imperative that we continue to be the exemplary model which we have been for the past 102 years. I am proud of the way this brotherhood has embraced our new mission statement and supported the mandate for greater involvement in our national programs and with our strategic alliance partners. Within our communities there is a vital need for the service and leadership we provide through the deliberate execution of our national programs. Brothers, let us always keep in mind that we have been charged to be servant leaders that impact the lives of all those that surround us. I charge you to take full advantage of these opportunities available during this convention. Remember from whence we came and look forward to continuing our destiny. May God bless this great fraternity of extraordinary men and all that we represent.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR My Brothers Beloved, Welcome to Kansas City Missouri and the 88th General Convention. As we convene under the leadership of General President Matthews, we are reminded by our mission statement: Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., develops leaders, promotes brotherhood and academic excellence, while providing service and advocacy to our communities; of the reason for our gathering. We are here to sharpen the sword of continuous improvement as we review past practices and make needed modifications for future action. We are also gathered to celebrate the 102nd Anniversary of our Noble House!! We do so in an historic time; Senator Barack Obama has secured the required delegate strength to be the Democratic Party Nominee for President of the United States - a first time occurrence in the history of the nation. Regardless of your political party affiliation, as an Alpha Man it should make you proud! This is the ripened fruit of our historic "A Voteless People is a Hopeless People" national Program, it is the realization in this the 45th anniversary year of the March on Washington of aspects of Brother King's dream. MISSOURI DISTRICT DIRECTOR My Brothers in Alpha,
On the occasion of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.’s 102nd
Anniversary Convention, it is my great privilege and honor to extend
on behalf of the Brothers of the Mighty Missouri District greetings to all who will witness and participate in the activities surrounding this
momentous occasion. During your visit to the “Show Me State” you will encounter one of the most memorable experiences in
brotherhood in your lifetime. The standard set by the Brothers of Kansas City will be talked about for years to come.
One Hundred and Two years ago at Cornell University in Ithaca, New
York, seven visionary giants, steadfast in their beliefs and ideals took a courageous step and
founded an organization dedicated to the plight of African-American males: Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. This organization has become a beacon of light for all those who have followed.
This year’s theme “Developing Leaders for Service and Advocacy” is relevant and necessary
not only from a fraternal perspective, but more importantly applies to the global community.
These are dark times in America and the world, which have seen: the erosion of the family
structure, the growing inaccessibility of health care, the decline in our educational system, lack of employment and an increase in crime involving African American youth. These critical
concerns are the sparks that have served to rekindle the flame of leadership and community
service, which is forever held high by the torch of Alpha Phi Alpha.
As we continue to move onward and upward in the 21 century, the men of Alpha Phi Alpha remain vibrant, relevant and a major contributor to the global community.
Again, welcome to the “Show Me State” and may God’s blessings be with each of you. Sincerely,
James A. McNairy James A. McNairy

“A Voteless People is a Hopeless People” was initiated as a National Program of Alpha during the 1930's when many AfricanAmericans had the right to vote but were prevented from voting because of poll taxes, threats of reprisal, and lack of education about the voting process. Voter education and registration has remained a dominant focus of this outreach activity for over 65 years. In the 1990's, the focus has shifted to include political awareness and empowerment.

You will almost never be the sole candidate for any promotion or new job. So reach out for whatever you desire and deserve, recognizing
that others will be desirous and deserving too. The outcome will depend on your skills as a player. Don’t hesitate to become skillful and
play to win. This is a 60 minute workshop with a 30 minute Q&A on

"To Reach the Top......Good is NOT Enough!":
C2C (Workshop #13) Presenter: Keith Wyche, President, US Operations, Pitney Bowes Many minorities enter the corporate workplace energized and
anticipating a successful, enjoyable career. Unfortunately, after initially
seeing their careers progress, many of these same professionals find
themselves frustrated with their inability to break through the "glass ceiling" and into executive level positions.
In this message, I share with the audience the importance of a
concept I call P.E.P. (Performance, Exposure, Perception) and the impact it can have on an your career, if properly understood and
managed. The argument is, most workers and companies focus almost
exclusively on Performance. However, to succeed in the workplace requires both the worker and the employer to understand the impact
of Exposure and Perception on career development. Ladies Workshops

shall not walk in darkness, But shall have the light of life. For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness hath
shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God, in the face of Jesus Christ. Ye are the light of the
world. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven. I am

THE ALPHA AWARDS OF HONOR & MERIT A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE ALPHA AWARD MERIT & HONOR In 1952 the General Convention established the Alpha Award of Honor and the Alpha Award of Merit. (History-334) These have become by tradition and practice our greatest awards. Initially the awardees were chosen by a committee headed by the venerable Brother Taliaferro (Tolly) Harris. At some point in our history the selection became a function of the office of the General President. In recent years the Award of Honor has been presented to non-members and the Award of Merit to members.
QUALIFICATIONS On account of the difficulty of appraising the full value of leadership and attainment in a democracy, and in order to determine some standards of selection, the following conditions, in general, for these awards must be met. The recipients and successful candidates shall have(a.) The courage, vision, wisdom and independence of thought and action which characterizes the best leadership in American life; (b.) They shall be representative of the intellectual and spiritual attainments and loyalties to the high ideals of liberal culture for which loyalty Alpha Phi Alpha has stood through the years; (c.)They shall have attained a distinctive place in productive scholarship and professional activity in their chosen field; (d.) They shall have carried in their heart and life the welfare of the descendants of Africa; and have made life for them fuller of opportunity and richer with dignity and inspiration through their ideas, ideals, and work.

THE ALPHA AWARDS OF HONOR RECIPIENT
SYL LORENZO SHANNON, Ph.D.
For over 55 years, Brother Sylvester Lorenzo Shannon has served Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. at the chapter, district, regional, and national level always rendering unparalleled service. He has traveled more miles than any Alpha since Brother Mal Goode delivering Chartering and Anniversary Addresses, leading Memorial Services and bringing inspiration and insight on Founders Days. In 1999, he was candidate for 31st General President. For almost thirty years, the first voice heard at the Ecumenical Service of the General Convention is that of Life Member 545, Brother Syl Lorenzo Shannon.
Brother Shannon was initiated on November 22, 1952 at Beta Nu Chapter, Florida A&M University. He attended his first General Convention on December 27, 1952 with Brother Rev. M. G. Miles and has seldom missed a General or National Meeting since! His participation in the national life of Alpha has been consistent and active since the General Presidency of A. Maceo Smith.
Brother Shannon’s first major assignment after college was Fort Benning, Georgia where he worked hard to raise $3000 for scholarships at Delta Iota Lambda, Columbus, Georgia with the Morehouse College Glee Club performing at the new civic center in 1959.
Brother Shannon paid his Life Membership in $25 increments from Cu Chi, South Vietnam and each month Brother Laurence Young would send a hand-written thank-you note. With the help of Brother James O. Heyward, Brother Shannon sought and established a charter for a chapter in South Vietnam. Meetings occurred at noon on Saturdays and seven to twenty brothers gathered in Saigon when travel, combat operations and mortar attacks permitted. General President Lionel H. Newsom, the first International President named Brother Shannon the first International District Director in November 1968. In 1969, with the help of Brother Hobart S. Jarrett, he wrote and edited the Public Policy Statement which was decidedly proAmerican while decrying the War in Southeast Asia.
Immediately after Vietnam, Brother Shannon went to Colorado Springs and established a Club Scout Pack and a Boy Scout Troop. Alpha Brothers began to gather, too. Iota Omicron Lambda was chartered in 1969 and today boasts being one of the strongest chapters in Alpha. Brother Syl Shannon has enhanced his belief that chapters are the life blood of the fraternity, and after becoming Chapter President of Theta Theta Lambda, Frankfort Germany (1974-1976) four or more brothers attended General Conventions.
Shortly after the death of Brother Martin Luther King, Jr. Brother Shannon joined hands with two other clergy and organized Laconia Associates with “Few Words---and Many Deeds” as their motto, 83 young people have been helped with college tuition and sometimes travel to campuses. Nine of these students have earned doctoral dregres. In January 1973, Brother Shannon wrote a military regulation that outlines how the
Army should hold memorial ceremonies for non-military persons like Dag Hammarskjoid and Martin Luther King, Jr. the success of ceremonies at the United States Army Infantry School brought Brother Shannon to Department of Defense attention and he was invited to speak for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday

In 1979 Eastern Region Vice President Gray Gilliam and General President James A. Williams invited Brother Shannon to serve the fraternity as chaplain. This Alpha Brother has lifted our spirits through prayers and inspirational meditations ever since. Brother Edward Brooks declared at the Centennial Convention, “Brother Shannon takes us near the heart of God, and I feel God’s presence when this chaplain speaks or prays.”
After 24 years of active military duty, Brother Shannon served congregations in Virginia; Washington, DC; New York; New Jersey and Indiana. His three principal areas of interest have been higher education, real estate management and consulting, and spiritual direction. He was adjunct professor at Carroll College, Duke University Divinity School, United Theological Seminary in Poona, India and several military schools and institutions. He was an early promoter of Shared Equality purchasing opportunities for retired educators and military personnel to assist low income families and individuals in becoming homeowners. Today seventeen single parents enjoy home ownership because Brother Shannon’s prowess. As chairman of the board, Living Water Ministries (International), this brother’s leadership in spiritual direction and his untiring efforts reaches graduate students and congregations in Korea, India, Kenya, Zimbabwe, and the Cameroons and in various communities throughout the United States.
Brother Shannon is an Eagle Scout, an hour graduate of Florida A&M University where he earned two bachelor degrees; University of Colorado where he earned a third Master degree. He holds a Doctor of Ministry degree from McCormick Theological Seminary and a Doctor of Philosophy degree from University of Kansas. He is also a graduate of US Army Infantry School, US Army Airborne School, US Army Chaplain School, Command and General Staff College and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces.
