THE MAZE OF CYBERBULLY

Type: Exhibition

Location: Padang, Singapore Area:1006m²

PROJECT BRIEF:

The project is an immersive exhibition that explores the issue of Internet cyberbullying.

While the Internet brings numerous benefits, it also poses dangers. The abundance of information often leads people into a web of misinformation and fake news. Consequently, individuals may lose the ability to distinguish between true and false information and to think independently. The Internet frequently becomes a platform where people amplify their emotions and express their opinions freely.

Through this exhibition, we aim to showcase how cyberbullying occurs. Our hope is that the exhibition will inspire visitors to approach the truth with caution and to be mindful of their words in this era of frequent cyberbullying. We want to emphasize that anyone, including you and me, can become victims or perpetrators.

Cyberbullying occures on every social platforms . Especially with national stay-at-home orders due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as people spend more time online, they’re more likely to fall victim or perpetrator to cyberbullying .

STUDENT

“I saw that they verbally abused me on our unofficial school Facebook page, and many idiots (schoolmates) didn’t know the truth, and then, they clicked the ‘Like’ button on that post. I felt angry that they agreed with the perpetrators.”

PUBLICITY ANONYMITY

GROUPIES

I received numerous private messages filled with curses, labeling me as stupid and annoying. These messages came from fans who judged me solely based on appearances, referring to me as a bitch and criticizing shallow people. As an introverted person, it was a frightening experience

TEACHER

“II was criticized for being a preschool teacher who paid too much attention to my appearance instead of focusing on my professional image. This criticism made me question myself and contemplate whether I should heed their opinions”

PERMANENCY

- EU Kids Online Study (2020): The study found that, on average, 9% of children aged 9-16 in the UK reported being cyberbullied. This places the UK below the European average of 11%.

- Annual Bullying Survey by Ditch the Label (2020): The survey found that 21% of young people aged 12-20 in the UK reported being cyberbullied. This suggests a higher prevalence compared to some other studies.

- Cyberbullying Research Center (2020): The research center reported that around 26% of middle and high school students in the US have experienced cyberbullying at some point.

From the research, 67% of interviewees claimed that they have experienced cyber bully.

DEVELOPMENT

The exhibition’s shape is derived from the hexahedron, which is inspired by the structure of a honeycomb. This shape conveys a sense of enclosure and organization, suggesting that everyone on the internet exists within an information cocoon. As a result, people are unable to obtain a comprehensive view of others and their surroundings.

Zone 3: Truth exploration

MIRROR LABYRINTH:

This area is inspired by the phenomenon of information fragmentation on the internet, where people can only showcase certain aspects of themselves and gain limited knowledge about others. This often leads to misunderstandings and also creates an environment conducive to cyberbullying. People always have limited view of a person before judging them.

PEEKING DIGITAL TRAP:

This design concept is inspired by the behavior of cyberbullying. It aims to shed light on the issue of privacy violations and the subsequent judgment that victims often endure. The objective is to create a horror immersive experience that mimics the real-life scenarios, utilizing projection and digital screens to enhance the technological aspect.

TRUE HEART:

This design concept is inspired by the notion of an “information cocoon.” It explores the idea that a person’s true personality is often concealed beneath layers of protective covers. The victims find themselves trapped within these covers, as they struggle to maintain a facade to protect themselves from external judgments.

Project Brief:

Type: Retail

Location: Shaw House, 350 Orchard Rd Singapore 238868

Further to the schematic proposals that were designed for the pop-up store, I was tasked with developing and refining an interim concept store proposal in line with the idea of ‘future retail’. The design proposal also incorporates future-forward strategies. The store aims to present a cohesive representation of the brand and showcase the innovative ideas and imagination of the futuristic retail industry. It also reflects the clear application of dialectics and strategies.

Ofelia’s Allegory(9-Grid Square Project )

Project Brief:

Group needs to research and conceptualise on the given aspect of experimentation with considerations for ergonomic interactivity between person and proposed body-displacement devicebased on the provided narrative – Pan’s Labyrinth (film.2007).

The movie is about during the Allied invasion of Nazi-held Europe in 1944, a troop of soldiers led by the sadistic Capitan Vidal is sent to a remote forest in Spain to eliminate rebels. Ofelia, the 11-year-old daughter of Vidal’s new wife, witnesses his cruel actions and seeks refuge in Pan’s Labyrinth, a mystical realm inhabited by mythical creatures

Design Intent

The character of Ofelia in the film undergoes a captivating adventure, navigating between the wonderous world and the harsh reality.

Based on extensive research, our focus was to highlight how Ofelia’s child-like wonder enables her to perceive the existence of fantastical underworld creatures juxtaposed with the cruelty of reality. The surrounding darkness and banality attempt to suppress her imagination, while hardships pose obstacles in her path. However, she triumphs, ultimately proving that her vivid imagination holds immense significance and is far from being mere nonsense.

MODEL MAKING PROCESS

Introduction

The mechanism represents the process of Ofelia stepping on the staircase and entering the wonderland. To reconstruct the scene, we decided to create a mechanism that would achieve this process. It involves pulling the outer wall out, causing the steps to automatically fall down and create a staircase leading to the second storey. However, when Ofelia steps on the last step, the foldable step will shorten and drag the movable outer wall back, preventing Ofelia from going back.

During the construction process, we utilized laser cutting and a handicraft workshop to create the necessary components of the mechanism and assemble them. For the large-scale model, we initially cut pieces of wood and employed nails and a drill to join them together. Then, the inner movable walls were crafted along with the sliding tracks on the sides. Finally, we installed the steps and adjusted the details to ensure smooth movement.

FADE

The collage is based on the principle of contrast. The shapes display a gradient as they change in size from big to small, and the patterns of the pieces change from consistent to sparse. This indicates contrast and simultaneously demonstrates a gradient.

I learned that deciding on a theme before beginning work will help in finding a clearer direction in the process. It encourages me to think about what kind of work I want and concentrate on it. This approach can also save a lot of time.

n my case, I wanted to make the gradient of the work more prominent. Therefore, the left part should be more eye-catching. To achieve this, I chose to elevate most of the pieces and slanted some small pieces to create variation and depth. On the other hand, the right side features more depressed and slanted pieces to create a flatter appearance, resulting in a visual contrast between the two parts. I elevated some pieces in the right part to make the contrast more obvious. The outcome of the multiple layers effectively showcase the contrast. Through the process of creating the model, I learned that incorporating pieces of different heights makes the work more visually expressive and distinguishes it from a 2D drawing.
