If you've ever enjoyed one of Roanoke's award-winning festivals, concerts, or holiday celebrations, there's a good chance you've seen the hard work of Collin Knight, our Special Events Supervisor. Collin has been with the City of Roanoke for five years, but his journey started in the Visitors Center and Museum, where he immersed himself in Roanoke's rich history. He spent his days giving museum tours and sharing stories about our community , along with helping with special events—a role that turned out to be a perfect fit.
A 2012 graduate of Stephen F. Austin State University with a degree in Ecology & Environmental Biology, Collin originally envisioned a career outdoors. His dream was to become either a fishing guide or a Texas Game Warden. Unfortunately, when he graduated, Texas Parks and Wildlife was facing significant budget cuts and staffing reductions, forcing him to rethink his plans. That unexpected detour led him to REI, where he met his future wife, Caroline. The two married in 2018 and are now the proud parents of two energetic toddlers, Ezra and Edith. Collin's love of the outdoors began long before college. An avid fly fisherman, he's been fishing since he was 10 years old. Family fishing trips have taken him all over the country, and spending time on the water remains one of his favorite ways to relax. His parents, both geologists in the oil industry, also sparked another lifelong interest. Growing up, Collin learned about gems, rocks, and geodes while exploring their impressive collection.
Today, Collin couldn't imagine doing anything other than special events. "What I love most is that every day is different," he says. "I can't picture myself sitting behind a desk all day."
When asked about his favorite City event, the answer came quickly: July 3 . All American Fireworks Festival. The fireworks are hard to beat, and seeing the community come together makes all the hard work worthwhile.
That hard work certainly hasn't gone unnoticed. The City's Special Events Team has been consistently recognized by the Texas Festivals and Events Association for excellence. Last year alone, the team brought home nine awards, including three Gold Awards—a testament to their creativity, dedication, and teamwork.
When asked what he wishes other City employees knew about special events, Collin didn't talk about the long hours or behind-the-scenes planning. Instead, he focused on gratitude.
"I wish everyone knew how thankful I am for all of the employees who give so much of themselves to make our events successful. We simply couldn't do it without them. So many people consistently go above and beyond what's expected, and that's what makes these events so special."

Behind the Scenes with IT: What We’ve Been Up To!
If it feels like the city has been moving at lightning speed lately, that’s because it has! The IT team has been busy keeping the wheels turning behind the scenes. Here are the big trends we worked on this past month:
Getting Summer-Ready We’ve been out at the community pool prepping the tech for opening day setting up staff accounts, ning the WiFi, and testing credit card readers so operations run smoothly.
The Great Roanoke Shuffle With a huge wave of summer hiring, internal promotions, and office shuffles, we’ve been working hard to get new equipment deployed, phones moved, and software permissions updated for everyone changing roles.
Keys to the City Physical security has been a major focus. We’ve repaired several finicky facility doors to keep our buildings safe and accessible.
Public Safety Tune-Ups We’ve spent a lot of time under the hood with Police and Fire tech, streamlining how emergency data flows from dispatch directly to our first responders' field software to ensure zero delays when it counts.

Congratulations to Detective Mike Sciarrillo!
On June 26, 2026, our own Detective Mike Sciarrillo was honored at the Texas State Capitol in Austin with the 2026 State of Texas Law Enforcement Achievement Award for Public Service. Chief Williams and Captain Arndt were also on hand to attend the ceremony and celebrate this outstanding accomplishment.
Presented annually by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE), the State of Texas Law Enforcement Achievement Awards are among the highest honors in xas law enforcement. The awards recognize peace officers, reserve officers, telecommunicators, and county corrections professionals who go above and beyond the normal expectations of their duties through exceptional professional achievement, public service, or acts of valor.
We are incredibly proud of Detective Sciarrillo and grateful for his dedication to serving our community. Please join us in congratulating him on this well-deserved recognition!
