Desk report:

The number of young people who are not in education, employment or training (Neet) has risen, edging closer to one million.

Official estimates are that 957,000 people aged 16 to 24 in the UK were Neet in October to December 2025, or 12.8% of that age group.

The UK is experiencing a weak jobs market, with young people particularly affected by cuts in hospitality and graduate schemes.

The figures show a slight increase from the previous quarter, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said, adding more young people were actively looking for work in the last three months of 2025. However, the total number of Neets is slightly lower - down 0.4 percentage points - than the same period last year.

The ONS said the increase in Neets was driven by a growing number of young women who are out of work.

Young men are more likely to be Neet than young women,

Nearly a million 16-24 year-olds not working or in education

but the gap is narrowing: some 12.2% of women aged 16 to 24 were Neet at the end of 2025, which is higher than the previous quarter.

The number of young male Neets dropped slightly in the same period, to 13.3% of all men aged in that age group.

A young person is considered

Neet if they are unemployed (looking for work) or economically inactive (not actively looking for work and not waiting to start a job or caring for family).

The number of Neets who were seeking work rose by 12.3% from the previous quarter, while the number of

those not actively looking for a job fell 6%.

Someone in formal education, such as school or university, doing an apprenticeship or vocational course, is not considered to be Neet.

A rise in long-term sickness, mental illness and

Spain to check Gibraltar arrivals under post-Brexit deal

neurodivergence in young people has been one of the main causes of economic inactivity over the past three years, according to research by the Youth Futures Foundation, external.

Joseph, who is autistic, has been unemployed for three years.

The 24-year-old, who lives in Solihull, told BBC Newsbeat that there was "a real taboo" around needing experience to get a job, but only being able to gain experience through a job.

"Confidence can definitely be an issue. I've only ever worked one job that's in person," they said.

"I didn't know how things worked, the commute into work, that sort of thing. They also said autism "can be a barrier but it can also be a strength" but many employers do not understand this.

Joseph is currently being helped by a King's Trust youth support worker to help them find paid work.

British travellers to Gibraltar would have to show their passports to Spanish border guards, under a deal with the EU to remove checks at its land border with Spain.

Details of a new system of dual checks at the Rock's airport and port have been confirmed in a 1,000-page draft treaty published on Thursday, external.

The agreement is designed to bring certainty to the British overseas territory nearly a decade after the Brexit vote threw its status into doubt.

Pressure to reach a deal had been mounting ahead of the full application of new checks on passengers entering the passport-free Schengen zone in April.

Under the deal, Gibraltar will not officially join the zone, made up of 29 mainly EU countries including Spain. Instead, Spanish authorities will carry out "second line" Schengen-style border checks in a special zone, after border checks conducted by Gibraltarian officials.

Spanish guards will have powers to arrest, search and interview travellers "where it

is justified in the course of border control," according to the treaty.

The system should eventually allow for the removal of 'La Verja', the 1.2km (0.7 mile) chain link fence along Gibraltar's land border with Spain, which is crossed every day by around half of the Rock's workforce.

It would mean the disappearance of "the last wall in continental Europe," said Spanish Foreign

Minister José Manuel Albares in a video clip welcoming the deal, external.

The UK government is likening the new system to that in operation at London's St Pancras station, where Eurostar passengers are checked by both British and French border officials.

British nationals make up a huge share of visitors travelling to Gibraltar for tourism, representing 86.5% of all departures from its

airport in 2024, according to the territory's most recent tourism survey, external.

'Operational overreach'

Since Brexit, Spain has allowed Gibraltar residents to cross the border without having their passports stamped, but there have been periodic complaints from Gibraltar about Spanish police tightening checks.

From April, Spain had been due to apply the EU's new automated border

system, including biometric checks, at the border with Gibraltar, which the UK says would "devastate" Gibraltar's economy.Fabian Picardo, the territory's chief minister, has welcomed the agreement, adding it delivers "the certainty our people and businesses need".

Gibraltar's government says it is hoping to provisionally apply the deal from 10 April, the date when the EU's new border system is scheduled to become fully operational after several previous setbacks.

Speaking in the Commons, Foreign Office minister Stephen Doughty said the deal was evidence of a "new era of co-operation" with the EU since Labour took office. His Conservative shadow Wendy Morton said the treaty required "proper scrutiny" and questioned how "operational overreach" from Spanish police could be avoided.

The government also says a majority of goods destined for Gibraltar will be cleared by EU customs offices in Spain, in a deal designed to avoid the need for customs checks at the land border.

UK asylum claims drop slightly in 2025 as small boat arrivals rise by 13%

The number of people claiming asylum in the UK fell by 4% in 2025, according to new Home Office figures, despite the number of people arriving on small boats rising by 13%.

Some 100,625 people claimed asylum in the year to December and about 40% of these arrived by small boats, the figures show.

But while the number of small boat arrivals increased to 41,262, the figure still remains lower than the peak of 45,774 in 2022.

Small boats made up the majority (89%) of those who came to the UK via illegal routes, with other methods including lorries and shipping containers.

Meanwhile, the number of asylum seekers housed in hotels has fallen by 19% to 30,657, as more people are moved into longer-term accommodation.

In the past year, more than 72,000 asylum seekers were housed in longer-term accommodation, which

includes houses in multiple occupation (HMOs), as opposed to hotels.

The government had previously expressed its commitment to closing all asylum hotels by the end of this Parliament, which would be in 2029, explaining that this would see a move to the use of 'larger sites' such as military sites.

According to the figures, the most common nationalities of asylum seekers arriving by small boat were Eritrea (19%), Afghanistan (12%), Iran (11%), Sudan (11%), and Somalia (9%).

It comes as the warmer weather has seen more people attempt to cross the Channel over the past few days. Statistics from earlier

this week show that 74 migrants arrived in the UK on Tuesday.

In Ramsgate on Wednesday, the BBC witnessed dozens of people being retrieved from small boats in the Channel by Border Force and RNLI lifeboats. A large number of women and children were among those seen disembarking from the vessels.

Corbyn set to become Your Party parliamentary leader

Desk report: Jeremy Corbyn is expected to become the parliamentary leader of Your Party after his supporters won control of the left-wing party's leadership committee.

The former Labour leader's supporters, dubbed "The Many", won 14 of the 24 seats on the party's central executive committee (CEC) compared to seven seats for "Grassroots Left" supporters endorsed by former Labour MP Zarah Sultana.

Corbyn said party members had voted for a "mass, socialist party that takes the fight" to Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and Reform UK leader Nigel Farage. Grassroots Left said Your Party must "work together to become a party of and for the whole left, with no more witch-hunts or stitch-ups".

"The Many" stated that they would elect Corbyn as parliamentary leader if they won the CEC election.

Your Party members previously chose to adopt a collective leadership model

rather than a single leader, which avoided a direct leadership contest between Corbyn and Sultana. The two MPs launched the party last year to "take on the rich and powerful".

Its opening months were overshadowed by splits in the party, including over money, leadership and its name.

Both Corbyn and Sultana were elected to the CEC.

Corbyn, in a statement released after the results were announced, said: "We have a precious opportunity to unite our movement around a bold vision for this country - one that believes in a more caring, equal and peaceful society for all. "I look forward to working with all members to make this vision a reality."

The Islington North MP said he wanted to "build a

The figures show there have been falls in claims from people arriving via all other routes.

Slightly fewer people came via other illegal routes last year, such as in lorries or shipping containers.

There were also falls in the number of people claiming asylum after having previously come into the UK with a visa. Some people arrive in the UK on work, study or visitor visas and then claim asylum while they're here.

That accounts for nearly as many asylum claims as small boats - this figure had been rising steadily since the end of 2021.

However, over the last 18 months that number has started to fall, mainly because of fewer students claiming asylum. This, in turn, has contributed to the drop we are now seeing in asylum claims.

positive and inclusive party where all members feel empowered to share their ideas".

In November, Your Party's conference approved allowing members to have dual membership in future. Coventry South MP Sultana did not attend the opening day of the conference in protest of the expulsion of some members who had retained their membership

of other left-wing groups, such as the Socialist Workers Party.

Grassroots Left, responding to the election results, said: "All those who have been expelled should be reinstated.

"We now need a culture of mutual respect, open debate, and a shared focus on the real issues facing us: inequality, insecure work, crumbling public services, fascism, and a political establishment that keeps letting working people down."

Sultana said members have sent a "clear message", including about the need for "greater transparency and accountability" and for party branches to be "properly recognised and respected".

She said "now is the time to work together", adding: "I remain committed to building a socialist, anti-imperialist, anti-Zionist party that is democratic, member-led, and focused on delivering real material change for our communities."

There are now more ways than ever to take control of your health and access NHS services quickly, easily, and on your terms. For example, visiting your local Pharmacy for a minor illness, using NHS 111 for urgent advice or contacting your GP surgery online. One of the simplest ways to access essential health services is by using the NHS App.

Krishnam Panchamatla is one of the NHS’s national team of ‘App Ambassadors’, helping people in his local area to understand how to use the NHS App to save time and to access the help they need.

‘I’m a Quality Assurance Manager at a GP practice in Leigh, Manchester, and I love helping people in our community to feel more confident using the NHS App. It saves so much time when you’re trying to manage your health as part of a busy life; and it’s so simple to use.

What I like best about the

Tap the NHS App and take control of your health

App is that it puts important services at your fingertips and gives patients the opportunity to take control of their health. You can request repeat prescriptions, receive reminders, access test results and even view your GP health records – all from your phone. It’s easy,

it’s quick and it means that there are lots of aspects of your health that you can manage with just a ‘tap’. I use the NHS App to check my own medical records too.

If you don’t already have the NHS App, you can download it on your phone. You’ll be

asked to set up a login, you’ll just need your NHS number, and a few personal details. Once you have the App, it’s time to discover all its helpful features.

For example, for anyone who has an existing repeat prescription, you can

request this through the NHS App – without needing to call your GP surgery –and pick up your medicines at the Pharmacy of your choice in a few days. It’s so convenient and it saves a trip to the surgery. You could be sitting on your sofa or on the bus and just get it done. I also encourage people to turn on notifications on the App, so that you’ll get things like reminders about appointments. You can trust that your personal health information is confidential and secure, so there’s no need to worry.

We know that some people can be nervous about using technology – that’s what I’m here for – but it’s also great when younger relatives can help someone get familiar with using the NHS App. So many of the people I’ve supported are amazed at how easy it is to use once you get the hang of it. It really does make life feel easier.’

Typical household energy bills will fall by 7% in April, regulator Ofgem has announced, following a shake-up in charges by the government.

Nearly everyone in England, Wales and Scotland will benefit from a cut irrespective of their tariff, although the amounts will vary between households. For millions of households on variable tariffs governed by the price cap, the drop will be about £10 a month for those using a typical amount of gas and electricity. However, prices are still about a third higher than before the war in Ukraine, debts have ballooned, and billpayers are being urged to shop around for further savings.

The 7% fall in the price cap is the biggest drop since last summer. While the government promised a £150 a year reduction in April, the cost of running the energy network is up, leading to a lesser saving of £117 for a household using a typical amount of energy.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves told the BBC "we're

beginning to turn a corner," saying the government was "putting more money in people's pockets," and improving public services.

But Conservative shadow energy secretary Claire Coutinho said Labour was "pulling the wool over people's eyes by moving some costs off of your energy bill and putting them

straight onto your tax bill". How bills work

Domestic gas and electricity bills are a complicated mix of charges for energy policy, costs to run the network, and the price of gas and electricity to run a home.

In November's Budget, Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced changes to policy costs.

She said the typical annual household energy bill would fall by £150, by scrapping the Energy Company Obligation (Eco) scheme introduced by the Conservatives, and moving some charges onto general taxation. However, the cost of maintaining and strengthening energy networks - including power lines, cables and gas pipes -

is rising by about £6 a month for a typical household, diluting the saving.

For a household governed by Ofgem's price cap, using a typical amount of energy, the annual bill will fall by £117 to £1,641. Without the government intervention, the price cap would have risen in April.

The cap is based on a "typical household" using 11,500 kWh of gas and 2,700 kWh of electricity a year with a single bill for gas and electricity, settled by direct debit. Savings will vary

Crucially, the discount on each household's individual energy bill will depend on the size and type of household and how much energy it uses. It will be primarily applied through a lower price per unit of electricity used. This means high electricity users, which may include vulnerable households with medical equipment, are likely to see the biggest benefit. Those who use little electricity and a lot of gas will benefit the least.

Jersey approves assisted dying law

A law to allow terminally ill adults the right to choose to end their own lives has been approved in Jersey.

It marks the final legislative stage for the landmark proposals before they get Royal Assent in the UKand once approved the first legal assisted deaths could happen as early as next summer.

Those eligible are people with terminal illnesses causing unbearable suffering where they are expected to die within six months, or 12 months for those with neurodegenerative conditions such as Parkinson's and motor neurone disease (MND).

It means Jersey is now the second part of the British Isles where assisted dying has been fully approvedthe Isle of Man was the first. Westminster and Scotland are debating assisted dying, with the draft law in England and Wales making slow progress in the House of Lords.

A UK government spokesperson said the length of processing time "depends on the complexities

and sensitivities of a bill, as well as any legal and constitutional issues".

The various proposals across the UK have generated huge controversy, with passionate arguments for and against the changes.

Jersey Minister for Health and Social Services, Tom Binet, said: "Jersey would have one of the safest and most transparent assisted dying laws in the world."

Lorna Pirozzolo, from Jersey, who has terminal breast cancer, said the reform to law was "badly needed".

"Like so many terminally ill people I've spoken with, I'm not scared of dying, but I am terrified of suffering as I go. That's why this law is so badly needed.

"Today brings enormous relief, not just for me, but for future generations of islanders who deserve

compassion, choice and dignity at the end of life."

Humanists UK chief executive Andrew Copson said it was a "momentous vote of confidence for compassion, dignity, and choice at the end of life".

"For far too long, terminally ill people were denied the right to decide the manner and timing of their own deaths. Today, Jersey has changed that," he said.

Valdo Calocane broke into the woman's flat in 2020, three years before he killed Barnaby Webber, Grace O'MalleyKumar and Ian Coates and injured three others in the Nottingham attacks on 13 June 2023.

The woman, who required surgery to her spine, said a police officer told her Calocane could not be prosecuted at the time because of his mental health.

On Thursday, the inquiry heard the same officer told her if she had not escaped, Calocane "could have killed" her.

The Nottingham Inquiry, external - led by retired judge Deborah Taylor, has been hearing evidence from a number of witnesses about events leading up to the attacks.

More than 100 witnesses, including police officers, NHS workers and former flatmates, are expected to give evidence to the inquiry over nine weeks. Calocane was a student at the University of Nottingham when

he experienced his first episode of psychosis in May 2020, the inquiry has heard.

On the night of 24 May, he broke into a woman's flat in Brook Court, Radford, in the city.

The 22-year-old woman, who gave evidence anonymously through an Italian interpreter, said she had moved to Nottingham from Italy in January 2020 and was working as a cleaner at the time. She told the inquiry she had returned home from work at 20:00 BST and was showering when she heard repeated knocking at the door.

"I saw that this knocking was becoming louder and louder with kicks so I asked who it is," she said.

"The person replied 'it's me, open, open'.

"At first this was said quietly but then it became louder and the person on the other side asked, insisted on asking, to open the door and that's when I panicked."

Before she could use the spyhole in the door to find out who was there, the woman said the door began to shake.

"I could see the door was shaking, I could feel it was coming off," she said. The

"The proposals contain strong safeguards and reflect the clear wishes of the public, who have spoken through citizens' juries and repeated surveys."

'Very deep ethical issues' Jersey politician, Deputy Sir Philip Bailhache voted against the law and said he was "disappointed" by the result."I'm all in favour of compassion, I'm in favour of people having deaths which are good deaths, but I'm not in favour of the law which has just been passed.

"Life is a precious thing and I don't think really that it's for people to remove life in the way in which the assisted dying law is now going to authorise. "I think there are very deep ethical issues involved in this subject and I'm not sure what the outcome is going to be."I fear that it will change the community of Jersey in a way in which we may not yet be able to foresee."

Labour peer Lord Charlie Falconer, sponsor of the assisted dying bill currently being debated in the House of Lords, said the Jersey legislation was "quite similar".

woman said she put on her pyjamas and leaned out of the window to call for help, but she said - due to the ongoing Covid-19 lockdown - nobody was there.

"I thought that someone wanted to hurt me. I didn't know what to do. I was by myself. I was alone. I felt like someone was going to hurt me.

"First, I was holding on to the window and I tried to jump when I slipped and fell on to the ground. I was scared, I was very scared," she said.

The woman suffered serious back injuries when she fell 10ft to 12ft, and was unable to talk

or move, she said.

In her statement to the inquiry, the woman said when Calocane was brought into the courtyard of the complex by police, he tried to run towards her.

"He was looking at me with his eyes wide open and he tried to come to me but the officers had pinned him down," she said.

Recalling giving a statement to police in hospital, the woman said: "I was very worried. I was angry.

"Also I thought what was going to happen with the person who had tried to attack me, how was this going to end?"

Following her surgery and subsequent discharge from hospital, the woman said she was visited by an officer, who told her Calocane could not be prosecuted.

"They said they tried doing anything they could but because of his mental health problemthey mentioned schizophrenia - this person could not be jailed and he was therefore taken to a mental health institution.

"I was very angry, I was very upset because the damage he had caused is going to be forever, and I was so young, and I thought this was not enough.

"The psychiatric hospital was not enough but because there were no other possibilities, I accepted it," she said.

Shameless police

Bangla Sanglap Report: Allegations have emerged that the police are beating university students, journalists and pedestrians in Dhaka in the name of an anti-drug campaign. Bangladeshi law does not give the police the right to search or beat anyone "at will". The constitution guarantees the right to life and liberty, and the Torture and Custodial Death (Prevention) Act of 2013 considers physical torture as a crime. But there have been allegations that the police are using force without respecting the law. In particular, the police are targeting students with batons.

Although there are multiple allegations of use of force or illegal acts against the police, they are never tried in Bangladesh. Because the ruling government uses the police as a tool to suppress the opposition. It has been alleged that the police's uniforms have changed, but their character has not changed. The police are still maintaining the oppressive character that they had before the uprising. Recent police actions have been reported to have been violent towards the revolutionary students of the mass uprising.

Under the Criminal Procedure Code of 1898, the police must have a valid reason for arrest. Although they can arrest without a warrant in certain circumstances (enforceable offences), they must follow legal procedures. Section 50 of the Criminal Procedure Code of 1898 strictly prohibits the use of "more restraint than is necessary to prevent the escape" of an arrested person.

The Torture and Custodial Death (Prevention) Act, 2013, makes it illegal for the police to use torture or excessive force. Constitutionally, individuals cannot be deprived of life or liberty without due process and have the right to know the reason for their arrest. Despite these legal protections, Bangladesh's police do not care. They often act with impunity, and are not prosecuted for torture or custodial death.

The allegations have been made against Deputy Commissioner of Police Masud Alam. During an anti-drug drive in Dhaka's Suhrawardy Udyan, police members led by Masud attacked Naeem Uddin, a student of the Anthropology Department of Dhaka University. In this incident, students have been protesting and besieging Shahbagh Police Station for the past two days demanding the removal of Deputy Police Commissioner Masud. There has been no response from the Home Ministry on this incident. It is worth noting that Deputy Police Commissioner Masud Alam's recent activities have sparked quite a controversy. Heavy lathi-charge on Inquilab Mancha activists in Shahbagh, targeted attacks on students, lathi-charge on pedestrians, and lathi-charge on journalists were led by Deputy Police

Commissioner Masud Alam. He has already received the blessings of the new Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. Tarique Rahman indicated his blessing by placing his hand on Masud's forehead. With this, questions have arisen as to whether he is playing the role of DB Harun during the fascist era.

There is a lot of discussion and criticism surrounding the incidents of beatings and arrests during police raids in various parts of the country, including Suhrawardy Udyan, Dhanmondi Lake and Chandpur in Dhaka. Questions are also coming to the fore as to whether the police used excessive force during the raids.

It has been alleged that two journalists, Dhaka University students and passersby were beaten up during the police's anti-drug raid in Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka.

Several videos have even shown some of them being handcuffed and detained. However, they were later released, according to the police.

Many of the victims claim that the police beat them up even though they did not find anything illegal. However, the police say that such a situation arose due to obstruction during the raid.

Masud Alam, Deputy Police Commissioner of Ramna Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, also claims that the beatings were due to a 'misunderstanding'.

Apart from the incident of the anti-drug operation in Suhrawardy Udyan, there is a lot of discussion about the arrest of young people and teenagers in multiple police operations in several districts including Dhaka.

While many have questioned the excessive use of force by the police in these operations, some have also spoken in favor of improving the law and order situation, especially to reduce robbery and drug use.

Analysts say that through this, the allegations of abuse of law against the police that the general public has been making against them have come to the fore once again.

They also believe that although such steps are necessary for the police to maintain law and order, these operations should be conducted within the law. Meanwhile, it is reported that action has been taken against four police members in the Suhrawardy Udyan incident. Although nothing more than closing or removing the member as a departmental punishment is done. In practice, no action is taken against the police for any illegal act.

In addition, the police headquarters has said that legal action will be taken against the criminals if the law is violated during the operation after reviewing the videos circulated on social media. What is known about the incident

Although the police have conducted anti-drug operations

in different parts of the country, the incident in Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka is being discussed the most.

It has been alleged that two multimedia journalists, Dhaka University students and pedestrians were beaten during this operation.

Several videos that have gone viral on social media show a man arguing with the police. At one point in the altercation, the police resorted to baton charges.

Two people are also seen being led away in handcuffs in a video that has gone viral on social media. One of them is seen identifying himself as a Dhaka University student.

In the video, a police officer claims that a drug addict attacked police officers during an anti-drug drive in Suhrawardy Udyan while being questioned. He also claims that a police officer was injured in the incident.

In another video, a man is seen arguing with Deputy Police Commissioner (DC) Masud Alam of the Ramna Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police. At one point in the altercation, a police officer suddenly dragged him from behind, threw him to the ground, and started beating him with a baton.

Several people, including Dhaka University student Nayeem Uddin and BanglaNews multimedia reporter Tofail Ahmed, were injured in the Suhrawardy Udyan incident. Nayeem Uddin, a student of the Anthropology Department of Dhaka University, said that he had gone to Suhrawardy Udyan with his colleagues to discuss a program called 'Multilingual Evening'.

"The police beat us up on the charge of arguing even though they did not find anything illegal with us. They also beat up another friend of mine," said Mr. Uddin.

Another media worker named Tofail Ahmed, who was injured in the incident, alleged that he had gone to Suhrawardy Udyan to gather news about the police's anti-drug operation.

Meanwhile, DMP Ramna Division Deputy Police Commissioner Masud Alam, who was present at the scene at the time, is claiming that the entire matter was a 'misunderstanding'.

He claims that this undesirable situation arose when a policeman was injured in an attack by a drug addict during the operation. He said that some journalists were also beaten up by mistake during this time.

Regarding the beating of some students, Mr. Alam said that at one stage of the search of the suspects as part of the operation, some people got into an argument and obstructed the search.

The police officer also claimed that he himself intervened and stopped the police members when the situation became heated.

Mr. Alam said, “Two or three of our members beat up the

university student from behind during the discussion, this incident is undesirable. Action has also been taken against those who did this.”

In addition to Suhrawardy Udyan, the police arrested several young people and teenagers in raids at various places in Dhanmondi Lake and Chandpur city of Dhaka on Sunday and Monday. The police have been accused of beating them, making them sit up by holding their ears or releasing them on bail.

The police have made various allegations against those arrested in these incidents, such as being drug addicts or members of juvenile gangs.

Police say these raids were conducted based on specific information and complaints.

They also claim that some underage teenagers and young people were regularly using drugs in these areas late at night.

But many have raised the question on social media whether the police have the authority to beat, make people sit up or insult them while conducting such raids.

How much force can the police use?

Allegations of violating the law or using excessive force are not new. Although it is said to be public-friendly policing, the activities of many members of the force have been questioned at various times.

Experts say that the legal frameworks such as the CrPC, Penal Code, PRB and the Constitution determine the nature and extent of the work of the police. Where the police are also told what action to take in a given situation.

Advocate Manzil Morshed, a senior lawyer of the Supreme Court, says that what the police can and cannot do is clearly stipulated in the legal framework. The use of force must be necessary, proportionate and as limited as possible.

He also believes that the police are bound by international law.

The appropriateness of the use of force by the police according to the situation is important. International standards, especially the Basic Principles of the United Nations, say that force will be used in situations where it is 'absolutely necessary'. That is, where there is no other way.

Mr. Morshed says, “The police’s decision may vary depending on the situation. The situation in Suhrawardy Udyan has not been good for a long time. The area has become a drug den.”

He also believes that it is necessary to see whether the emerging situation legitimizes the role of the police. It is difficult to say without an investigation why the police attacked, because both sides are explaining it in their own way.

“If someone does something excessive, even if they are police, they will have to come under the law. However, in recent times, there has been a tendency among many to break the law, which is also not right,”

believes Mr. Morshed. Regular police operations and patrols are needed to control crime, but the police are resorting to violence while doing these, which is unacceptable, believes social and crime expert Touhidul Haque. He says that many police officers are trying to control such situations by resorting to violence, just as many police officers used to resort to violence in the past.

“The government is talking about establishing the rule of law, but the role of law enforcement agencies on the ground is different,” said Mr. Haque.

He believes that just as the police, as a trained force, have to work within the law and regulations, it is also unacceptable to obstruct the work of the police or behave disrespectfully towards them.

Why do police wear masks?

During the fascist era, during the repression of students, the police used to attack the protesters wearing masks in addition to their personal protection. In continuation of which, the police still attack the protesters wearing masks. At the same time, they cover the name plates worn by the police on their chests. In this case, the attacking police cannot be identified. That is why it has been alleged that the police are using the wearing of masks as a tactic. Although police officers wear all the PPE for personal protection.

Legal basis of conducting police searches: In Bangladesh, the procedure for the police to search a citizen or their personal belongings is primarily governed by the Code of Criminal Procedure and the Police Regulations of Bengal (PRB). While the law empowers police to conduct searches, it imposes clear procedures and restrictions.

The authority to conduct searches rests mainly with officers of the rank of subinspector (SI) and above.

Constables cannot conduct searches independently and may only assist in the presence of higher-ranking officers.

Under Sections 94 and 96 of the CrPC, police may carry out searches to recover specific documents or objects only with a magistrate’s authorisation or a search warrant.

Sections 102 and 103 further require that searches of enclosed spaces, such as homes or bags, must be conducted in the presence of at least two respectable witnesses from the locality.

However, Section 165 provides limited exceptions. If an officer believes waiting for a warrant could result in the loss or destruction of evidence, a search may be conducted without a warrant. In such cases, the officer must record the reasons and promptly inform a magistrate.
