A COLLECTION OF STORIES FROM AROUND NEVADA
APRIL 2022
ISSUE 13
VOLUME 1
The Village at the WCC Receives Additional Key Support from the Community! The WestCare development team met with the Vice Chair of the County Commission, Justin C. Jones, at the WestCare Nevada Women and Children’s Campus (WCC) for a tour of the current program and to hear about the proposed transitional living community, The Village at The Women and Children’s Campus, which we are hoping to break ground on this summer. Commissioner Jones is the Vice Chair of District F and served in the Nevada Senate from 2013 to 2014 where he was the Assistant Majority Whip. One of his biggest community issues was homeowners facing foreclosure and the conservation of Red Rock Canyon. He championed issues like economic development and increased access to community parks, trails, and natural spaces.
As a practicing attorney since 2001, Commissioner Jones provided pro bono representation to child victims of domestic abuse and neglect through the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada Children’s Attorney Project. He is an avid runner, cyclist, and hiker and loves his time in Red Rock or traveling to new exotic places. He just completed a marathon through Mt. Charleston and said he ran next to our men’s residential program at Harris Springs Ranch. He thought that the area was beautiful and he is interested in taking a tour soon. He was accompanied with Mike Shannon, town liaison who used to be part of our administration at WestCare Foundation 25 years ago and was excited to see the traction that The Village is making.
If I could title this issue of the Loop, it would be called “Everything Alumni: Part 1.” The reason for this title is the fact that although WestCare Nevada has and continues to remain open during the COVID-19 pandemic, one major area that was impacted was the ability for our alumni teams to do what they do best - actively engage in and participate towards improving the lives of clients in treatment. Now, do not get me wrong, there still exists a modified version of alumni involvement. However, the ability to provide in-person events within our programs was not allowed as a safety precaution. The pandemic also suspended our ability to utilize practicum students, volunteers, and allow for visitation - which is a vital part of developing and/or rebuilding healthy relationships.
WestCare Nevada’s CAC Lays the Groundwork to Upgrade the Women and Children's Campus! By Andrew Moran, Development Director, WestCare Nevada WestCare Nevada’s Community Action Council (CAC) has been hard at working making new upgrades to our WestCare Nevada Women and Children’s Campus (WCC)! Many decades ago, the campus was a convalescent home and in 2000, WestCare transformed it into a beautiful place that provides residential substance use treatment for pregnant and parenting women, transitional living for women, and transitional living for women Veterans who are experiencing homelessness. We are proud to report that we have had 18 drug- free baby births in the last year. The CAC, through a gift from the Higgins Family, are currently making the necessary upgrades to the sports and wellness court by landscaping, planting trees, and fixing the volleyball and basketball courts. They will repaint the entire center and through the Behr Paint Company, have ironed out a few color options. Arnold Stalk and Marilyn Moran on behalf of the CAC, met with senior leadership at the site and went over the upgrades. The hope is to have everything finished by this summer so that the women and children can enjoy the updated outdoor exercise and wellness area! The CAC has been a beacon of light for the programs of WestCare Nevada and will continue their selfless pursuit of helping others!

Since the month of April is Stress Awareness Month, with the theme of raising awareness of the causes and cures for our modern stress epidemic, we testify that the lack of healthy relationships and/or the ability of making healthy connections deprives people of support and in turn, can create additional stress, conflict, and even increase the potential for health issues. The truth is that healthy, supportive relationships help lower stress levels and provide a heightened sense of safety, security, and may even increase energy and provide a greater sense of well-being. That is why this month’s issue highlights our Las Vegas Alumni Group, their countless years of service to the clients of WestCare Nevada, and the impact of the recent modified events that they were able to provide to our residential clients at Harris Springs Ranch and the Women and Children’s Campus after a two-year hiatus. This group has been identified as a strength in each of the accreditation surveys that I have been a part .
of and as their liaison, I have been able to directly witness their overall achievements, comradery, and their impact on clients who partake in their events during their treatment episode. The results are astounding. Next month, the Loop will be related to “Everything Alumni: Part 2”, as it will provide articles and information related to Spiritual Alumni, our newer alumni group that will be celebrating their seventh anniversary. They were also able to, in a similarly smaller scale of activities, conduct two events associated with Easter and a celebration of their anniversary. So, stay tuned for some more great stories related to the impact of social connections and how our alumni groups offer a sense of belonging, learning, help, support, problem solving, and value! Finally, to commemorate National Volunteer Week, I want to thank, from the bottom of my heart, our alumni family, previous practicum students, and our volunteers who have willingly given of themselves toward positively impacting the lives of our WestCare Nevada clients. They demonstrate each day that the spirit of service is alive and well, and that life in and after recovery is extremely promising and worth living. Thank you all for your volunteerism!

Uplifting the Human Spirit THIS MONTH'S SPOTLIGHT: LAS VEGAS ALUMNI GROUP “Alumni on Sunday was so much fun. I felt like I was part of a family. There was and is so much love and support.” - Brandon J.
By Salina Lynds, President, WestCare Las Vegas Alumni Group
By Alex Cortes, WestCare Las Vegas Alumni Group
My name is Salina Lynds and I have been clean since August 18, 2013. When I first entered treatment, it was a huge struggle for me being around a bunch of women to having to clean up after myself. My anger got the best of me on multiple occasions and after seven months, WestCare asked me to leave. Mr. Leo just so happened to be there that day. I still do not know how he talked them into letting me stay, but I would not have made it as far as I have if I had been kicked out that day. After that, my life changed. I finally surrendered and stopped fighting the people that were trying to help me. They used to tell me, “We will believe in you until you learn to believe in yourself,” and I did not believe them because I was used to everyone giving up on me. WestCare, however, did not give up on me.
Hello, my name is Alex C. I am a graduate of WestCare Nevada and an active member of the WestCare Las Vegas Alumni Group. I have been clean since December 12, 2007 and have been a part of the alumni group for 13 years. I want to start by saying that WestCare saved my life. Getting treatment at the Harris Springs Ranch program was good for me and taught me that drugs were not my only problem; it was also my way of thinking. The lesson on behavioral modification changed me. With the help of WestCare, I got my driver’s license and earned my high school diploma. I remember they told me that the sky was the limit now that I was clean and I could do anything that I wanted. I just needed to do the footwork. WestCare helped me enroll in college. I wanted to be a substance abuse counselor and since I’m bilingual, I wanted to help my fellow Latinos. WestCare also helped me with the process of obtaining custody of my daughter once I was clean for five years. WestCare and my 12 Step Program gave me the life of my wildest dreams.
Around my second year of being clean, I became Vice President of the WestCare Las Vegas Alumni Group, but at the time, I was not at the right place to step up for the role of president. Now, six years later, I finally decided to take the president position because I felt like a change needed to be made to make us bigger and brighter. COVID-19 really set us back as a team because we were not allowed in the facility for two years. This past weekend of April 2-3, we were finally able to step back inside the place that saved our lives and give back what was so freely given to us, the WestCare Nevada Women and Children’s Campus (WCC). Not only is it important for the alumni team and our recovery, but it is also important for the clients. They need to know that you can still have fun in recovery without drugs and alcohol. They need to see and hear from people that have been exactly where they are and have not only survived, but are thriving in a normal life. We are their shot at hope. At this last event, we laughed, we cried, and we gave hope to so many hopeless individuals. We were also able to give our kids who were staying with their mothers in treatment an Easter that otherwise would not have had one. Seeing those kids happy while searching for Easter eggs is a feeling you would have to know to understand. Our alumni group is the lifeline when clients get out of residential treatment and we have very high hopes of adding more people to our team this year.
Today, I work as a supervisor at a private pay treatment center and I also work as an outreach specialist to help the homeless community get help with drug and alcohol treatment. WestCare taught me how to give back. As WestCare Las Vegas Alumni members, we live by our WestCare motto of Uplifting the Human Spirit. We work a fireworks booth every 4th of July weekend and like 7-11, we work 24/7 for eight days straight selling fireworks. The money that we earn allows us to put on three events every year: Spring Fling, Beast Feast, and Music on the Mountain. We do these events to show our clients in treatment that they can have fun without the use of drugs.
“I thoroughly enjoyed HSR’s Spring Fling. It was an enlightening opportunity to see the lasting support between clients. All of the alumni were personable and genuine and the food was amazing too! I plan to get involved upon my graduation and I can’t wait.” - Lester W.
“WestCare alumni, staff, and sisters love me ‘till I can love myself. They see in me what is worth saving that I couldn’t see in myself. Thank you endlessly.” - Raven S.
After two years, due to COVID-19, we were able to host our first event the first weekend of April. It was amazing finally giving back what was so freely given to us. Although we were limited to 10 alumni members, it was amazing to attend and see how happy the clients at Harris Springs Ranch were to have such an event. Hopefully for the next event, we will be able to double the number of alumni and give the clients a bigger, better event because that is what we love to do! Thank you, WestCare!
“The day went by pretty well. The people that came by were very outgoing. They interacted with everyone and stayed with very positive attitudes. They did well with trying to make it about us. Overall, it was a pretty good day. They treated us like family and that was pretty cool.” - Josh K.
“I really enjoyed when the Alumni visited Harris Springs Ranch. It was more than just fun and games. It was fun and games with sobriety. They really showed great leadership for recovery. They comforted us as much as possible, cheered us on in our sobriety, showed an eagerness to help, and reassured us that they were willing to help us in any way possible. They were very selfless. They shared their amazing stories with us proving that recovery is possible. The president of the alumni, Selena, took great care of us as well as the rest of the team. They really capitalized on letting us know that we are not alone. I really wish they could come more often than they do because it really gives us hope with our recovery. Seeing them in sobriety really made it hard to believe that they ever needed recovery. I’m so thankful for their visit because it really encouraged and motivated me with my recovery. Thanks to them, I am really looking forward to my sobriety. Thanks, alumni, for paving the way. Much love and respect!” - Derrick J.

It was topped off with very positive testimonies.” - Derrick W. “The alumni event was fun and very cool. I made a lot of amazing new friends, which is my new future alumni group. Thank you, alumni friends, for the thoughtful event that you all brought last Sunday to WestCare.” - Michelle B. “The alumni impacted my life by giving me hope in my recovery. It showed me that with will and determination, my future can still be bright and fun. Recovery is awesome. Thank you, alumni.” - Carmella H.

“I felt appreciated for the first time in a while. The food and beverages were good and it was great to have the games.” - Ernesto D.
“When I heard that we were having an alumni event, I honestly didn’t know what to expect and thought it was just going to be food and people talking about what they went through. The event ended up being amazing! I had a blast ad the food was delicious! I learned that you can still have fun sober. The alumni event was filled with laughter, joy, and love. I can’t wait until the next alumni event.” - Caley M.

“I would like to say that this program has been nothing but a blessing to me and my family. The tools I have gained here are amazing and when the graduates from here come and prove to us that it will work, it is a plus. They showed up and showed out. Great job! They played games, fed us, and gave us hope. They gave us a meeting and their clean dates and how important they are. This was the kind of inspiration that we needed. Their presence made a big difference and we need that often.” - Yancey B.
“I had an amazing time at the alumni event at WestCare. The spiritual energy felt awesome when meeting all of the alumni members. The games were fun and the food was really good.” - Rose S.
