Habs Boys Sporting Success Newsletter Summer Term 2026

Page 1

A Message from the Director of Sport

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the Habs Boys Summer Sporting Success Newsletter. As you read through this edition, I hope it provides not only a snapshot of the achievements, performances and opportunities that have characterised another busy term, but also a sense of the profound impact that sport and physical activity continue to have on the lives of our students.

While success on the scoreboard will always have its place, what gives me the greatest sense of pride is witnessing the personal journeys that so many young people undertake through sport. Some of the most rewarding moments this year have not come from victories, records or silverware, but from seeing students transform their relationship with physical activity itself. Whether overcoming a lack of confidence, discovering a sense of belonging within a team, or simply finding the courage to step outside their comfort zone, countless students have embraced opportunities that may once have seemed beyond their reach. There is something particularly special about watching a young person move from reluctant participation to genuine enthusiasm; from seeing sport as a challenge to be endured, to recognising it as a source of enjoyment, wellbeing and personal fulfilment. These moments serve as a powerful reminder of why so many of us choose to dedicate our time to school sport. Our ambition extends far beyond developing talented athletes. We want every student to leave Habs with a lifelong appreciation of physical activity and a positive relationship with their health and wellbeing. If we achieve that, we will have succeeded in something far more important than any result

Alongside these individual stories, this term has once again showcased the extraordinary breadth of opportunity available across Habs sport. Cricket has rightly taken centre stage throughout both the Prep and Senior Schools, with an impressive 25 teams representing the school across 136 fixtures. Given the challenges posed by an 11-week term punctuated by both persistent rain and periods of intense heat, this is a remarkable achievement and a reflection of our commitment to ensuring that as many students as possible can train, compete and represent their school.

Our athletics programme has similarly flourished, with students attending 14 competitions ranging from district championships to regional finals. These events have enabled athletes of all abilities to challenge themselves, pursue personal excellence and proudly wear the Habs colours. Tennis continues its upward trajectory as one of our fastest-growing sports, with thriving open sessions, increasing participation and outstanding performances from our representative squads. Together, these programmes reflect a sporting culture that values participation as highly as performance and recognises that every student's journey matters.

As we look ahead to September and the beginning of the football and rugby seasons, there is much to be excited about. I would also like to acknowledge the success of the recent water polo tour to Belgium. Beyond the competition itself, such experiences create friendships, memories and life lessons that endure long after the final whistle.

More broadly, this year marks the beginning of an important period of reflection and development across sport within the Habs Elstree Schools. A comprehensive review of our provision is currently underway, and while there will be more to share in the months ahead, I am confident that the work being undertaken will help shape an ambitious and exciting future for sport and physical activity across our community. The successes celebrated in these pages provide a strong foundation upon which to build.

Finally, my sincere thanks go to the staff, coaches, parents and guardians whose unwavering support makes so much of what we do possible. Together, we continue to encourage our students to be brave, to challenge themselves, to dream big and, above all, to discover the joy that sport can bring.

I hope you enjoy reading about the many achievements and experiences that have defined another memorable Summer Term at Habs.

With best wishes,

Scholarship at Habs

Sports scholarships are awarded to candidates in recognition of sustained sporting excellence, talent and future potential.

Candidates will be active members of their top ranked school sports teams and are likely to be involved in sporting clubs outside of school with representative experience or its equivalent at county level or above.

Outstanding skill, expertise or potential in any one or several sporting fields will be considered, but candidates are encouraged to show their potential in at least one of the focus sports at Habs.

Award holders will be ambassadors for sport who will make a full contribution to the sporting life of the school. Scholars will be allocated a mentor, who will encourage their sporting participation - in time, sports scholars will become mentors for younger award holders.

The value of a scholarship is usually between 10% to 15% of school fees (but can be up to a maximum of 25% in very exceptional circumstances). Scholarships are held for the duration of a student’s time at the school, subject to sustained levels of progress, participation and performance.

Cricket Season Review

Director of Cricket, Mr Jamie Hewitt, gives an outline of a very successful cricket season

As another cricket season draws to a close, I would like to reflect on what has been a highly successful and memorable year for Habs Cricket. The continued growth of the programme, the commitment shown by our pupils and staff, and the support we receive from parents have enabled another outstanding season both on and off the field. We fielded over 24 teams from Year 7 through to the 1st XI, with more than 500 boys and girls representing the school across more than 260 fixtures, including our popular internal T20 programme. This breadth of participation remains one of the great strengths of cricket at Habs.

Competitive Cricket at Every Level

Throughout the summer, our teams competed against some of the strongest cricket schools in the country, including Abingdon, Berkhamsted, Brentwood and Haileybury. These challenging block fixtures provide our players with invaluable opportunities to develop their skills, resilience and game awareness against high-quality opposition. While results are important, our primary aim remains the development of well-rounded cricketers who enjoy the game, embrace challenge and continue to improve throughout their school career. The continued enthusiasm for cricket across all age groups has been particularly pleasing, and the culture of hard work, enjoyment and excellence continues to underpin everything we do.

1st XI Highlights

The 1st XI built upon the experience gained in previous seasons and enjoyed an excellent year, particularly within the Saturday fixture programme.

Standout Performances

• Atharv (11R2) scored an outstanding 1,013 runs across the season, including two centuries and several match-winning innings.

• Luca (L6H1) claimed 20 wickets, consistently leading the attack during key fixtures. Both players demonstrated exceptional consistency and commitment throughout the season and were instrumental in many of the team's successes.

Representative Honours

We are delighted to celebrate the achievements of several pupils who earned county representative honours this year:

• Luca (L6H1) – Middlesex U18

• Atharv (11R2) – Middlesex U16 & U18, Middlesex Academy and Middlesex 2nd XI

• Krish (11R2) – Middlesex U16

• Elliott (10R2) – Middlesex U15

• Dhruv (8M) – Middlesex U13

• Harivansh (7R) – Middlesex U12

• Kabir (7C) – Middlesex U12

These selections reflect the dedication and hard work shown by the boys throughout the year and demonstrate the strength of the pathway available to players at Habs.

Tours and Festivals

India Tour

During February half-term, the 1st XI embarked on a memorable 12-day tour of India, visiting Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. The squad played six competitive fixtures whilst experiencing some of India's most iconic cultural landmarks, including the Taj Mahal. A particular highlight was attending an international fixture between Afghanistan and the UAE, providing a unique insight into the passion and scale of cricket on the world stage. The tour was an outstanding success, creating memories and experiences that will remain with the boys for many years to come.

Habs T10 and T20 Festival

In June, we were delighted to host a two-day cricket festival featuring Blundell's School, Reigate Grammar School and Pocklington School. Played across both T10 and T20 formats in extremely challenging temperatures, the event showcased excellent school cricket and provided outstanding competition for all involved. My sincere thanks go to Mr Coleman for his support throughout the event.

Girls' Cricket

This year has been a landmark season for girls' cricket at Habs

For the first time, we delivered a comprehensive winter training programme, which transitioned seamlessly into a full summer programme and included the launch of our own Emerging Player Programme (EPP). Participation has grown significantly, with over 100 girls involved throughout the year. The girls competed in three national cup competitions and played more hardball and softball cricket than ever before. It has been particularly pleasing to witness the continued growth in confidence, skill levels and enjoyment across all age groups. The introduction of regular fixtures has provided valuable playing opportunities, and we look forward to continuing the growth of girls' cricket through an expanded fixture programme in the years ahead. A huge thank you must go to Miss Horley and Mr McIntosh, whose energy, commitment and passion have been instrumental in the success of the programme.

Cricket Season Review

Looking Ahead

The future of Habs Cricket is incredibly exciting. Our scholarship cricket programme will continue to grow. Harivansh (7R), Kabir (7C) and Dhruv (8M) will be joined by a further group of talented scholars entering our cricket community next year. These players will benefit from increased one-to-one coaching support and will begin our High-Performance Programme (HPP), designed to accelerate their development both on and off the field.

We will continue to invest in both our boys' and girls' programmes, providing opportunities for players of all abilities to develop and enjoy the game while maintaining our commitment to excellence and inclusion. A key part of this vision is our expanding overseas touring programme. During the 2026–27 academic year, we are excited to announce that the U16A boys will tour South Africa, providing players with the opportunity to experience world-class facilities and highly competitive cricket in one of the game's most respected cricketing nations.

We are also hopeful that our U15A boys and U16A girls will embark on a joint tour to Malaysia, combining competitive cricket with cultural experiences that will broaden horizons, strengthen friendships and create lifelong memories.

These tours represent an important part of our commitment to providing exceptional opportunities beyond the classroom and boundary rope, helping to develop confident, resilient and well-rounded young people.

Thank You

Finally, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all staff who have given their time and energy to support cricket throughout the year. The scale and success of our programme would simply not be possible without their dedication.

Special thanks must go to Mr Kemmett and the ground staff for preparing and maintaining outstanding wickets and training facilities throughout the season. Their work plays a vital role in the development of our players and consistently provides an environment in which cricket can flourish.

We also extend our thanks to the catering team for their continued support throughout the summer. Most importantly, thank you to all parents for your encouragement, transport, support from the boundary edge and unwavering commitment to Habs Cricket throughout the year. Your support enables our pupils to enjoy so many outstanding opportunities and experiences through the game.

As always, I would like to thank our coaching and teaching staff, whose dedication allows us to provide such a wide-ranging and ambitious cricket programme. The success of Habs Cricket is very much a collective effort. We look forward to building on another fantastic season and welcoming even more success in 2027.

Junior Cricket Review

Mr Jamie Hewitt provides a Year 7-9 Cricket Review for the 2026 Season

The 2026 cricket season will be remembered as one of the most successful and rewarding in recent years, reflecting not only the strength of cricket at Habs but also the enthusiasm, commitment, and character displayed by our pupils throughout the summer. Across Years 7 to 9, an outstanding 136 fixtures were played, ranging from A teams through to E teams, providing every boy with regular opportunities to compete, develop, and represent the School with pride. Year 7 completed 42 fixtures, Year 8 played 46 fixtures, and Year 9 contested an impressive 48 fixtures, illustrating the breadth and depth of a flourishing cricket programme.

Year 7

For our Year 7 pupils, the season represented an exciting introduction to senior school cricket. The boys embraced the challenges of a demanding fixture programme with energy and determination, making impressive strides in both their technical skills and tactical understanding of the game. Their willingness to learn, train with purpose, and support one another resulted in numerous excellent performances and memorable victories. Whilst the A team's impressive County Cup campaign concluded with a quarter-final defeat, the experience gained will provide an invaluable foundation as they continue their cricketing journey through the school.

Equally pleasing was the progress made across the B, C, D and E teams. For many boys, this was their first experience of representing Habs in regular competitive cricket, and they responded with tremendous enthusiasm. Week by week, improvements were evident in the fundamentals of batting, bowling and fielding, while a growing understanding of match situations, game management and tactical decision-making enabled the boys to compete with increasing confidence. The willingness to challenge themselves, support teammates and embrace coaching ensured that every fixture became a valuable learning opportunity.

Year 8

The Year 8 squads built impressively on the successes of the previous season, demonstrating increasing confidence, resilience and maturity in their performances. On multiple occasions, excellent victories were secured against strong opposition, highlighting the boys' growing tactical awareness and technical consistency. The annual visit to Bedford School for the prestigious T10 Festival was once again a particular highlight of the summer. Competing against excellent schools, the boys produced a series of outstanding performances to finish as runners-up, an achievement of which they should be immensely proud.

The development of the Year 8 B, C and D teams was equally impressive. The increased volume of fixtures provided boys with regular opportunities to refine their skills under match pressure, while encouraging greater independence and ownership of their performances. Throughout the season, batting partnerships became more assured, bowling attacks displayed greater control and variation, and fielding standards improved significantly. The confidence gained from competing against strong opposition will undoubtedly benefit these boys as they move into the upper school.

Junior Cricket Review

Year 9

Year 9 enjoyed a truly exceptional season. The A team lost just four of their nineteen fixtures, consistently demonstrating a high standard of cricket characterised by disciplined bowling, intelligent captaincy and increasingly assured batting performances. Their efforts were deservedly rewarded with a second successive County Cup title under the guidance of Mr Haring, a fitting recognition of the group's sustained excellence and commitment. The opportunity to compete at the Epsom Festival provided another memorable experience, allowing the boys to test themselves against outstanding opposition in an exceptional cricketing environment. These occasions continue to broaden the pupils' cricketing education, challenging them both tactically and technically whilst creating lifelong memories with teammates and staff alike.

Across the remaining Year 9 sides, the standard of cricket continued to rise throughout the term. The B, C and D teams demonstrated remarkable progress, not only in their technical execution but also in their understanding of how to build innings, manage pressure and work collectively as teams. Many boys took on leadership responsibilities for the first time, supporting younger teammates, captaining sides and setting standards on and off the field. It was particularly pleasing to see the depth of talent emerging across the year group, reflecting the strength of the cricket pathway and the commitment shown by players throughout the programme.

Across all three-year groups, the boys demonstrated an outstanding commitment to their own development. The extensive fixture programme, complemented by purposeful coaching sessions and an unwavering desire to improve, enabled every pupil to make significant progress throughout the summer. Whether representing the A team or the E team, every boy played an important role in the success of the season. It has been particularly pleasing to witness not only their growing technical ability and tactical understanding, but also the resilience, humility, integrity and sportsmanship with which they represented Habs. Cricket has always been about far more than results alone. It is a game that develops character, resilience, leadership and teamwork, and this season provided countless opportunities for those qualities to flourish.

Fortunate to enjoy excellent weather for much of the term, the boys experienced a summer filled with competitive cricket, shared success and moments that will undoubtedly become lifelong memories. My sincere thanks go to the staff, coaches, parents, grounds team and officials whose unwavering support made another outstanding season possible. With such enthusiasm, depth of talent and commitment throughout the lower school, the future of cricket at Habs remains exceptionally bright.

Team captains/teachers give an insight into their individual team performances over the season

U15A – Elliot (10R2)

This season proved to be a real mixed bag, with the team winning 6 of its 11 matches in what was a very up-anddown campaign. While there were plenty of positive performances, the squad will be disappointed not to have progressed further in the County Cup. There were, however, several standout individual contributions. Darsh (10C1) enjoyed an excellent season with the bat, scoring over 200 runs, including a superb 68 against Berkhamsted. Elliot (10R2) led the team exceptionally well as captain throughout the season and impressed with a fine innings of 56 in the Saturday fixture against STAHS. With the ball, George (10S1) was the team's leading wicket-taker, finishing the season with 12 wickets, while Mikhail produced one of the bowling performances of the year with a brilliant fourwicket haul against STAHS.

One of the highlights of the campaign was the memorable victory over the cricket juggernaut, Haileybury, a result that demonstrated the quality and potential within the group. Looking ahead, there are so many encouraging signs. The squad has shown tremendous character and development throughout the season, and there are certainly a few players who will be pushing to play First XI cricket consistently next year. With continued hard work and progression, the future looks very bright for this talented group.

U15B – Mr Alastair Metcalfe

The U15B cricket season has been a curate’s egg if ever there was one. Oscillating freely between the exceptional and the abysmal (and sometimes in the same week), we struggled to gather any genuine momentum throughout the campaign. That said there were signs of improvement in July, but these were dashed by a calamitous performance with the bat against Brentwood, losing the last 6 wickets for 13 runs having been 86 for 4, chasing 102.

The season began with a chastening defeat against John Lyon, losing by 91 runs. It was a typical early season performance and the team improved quickly thereafter to record two notable wins against Chigwell and Haileybury with Captain and wicketkeeper, Rishi (10C2) hitting a rich seam of form with the bat (combined aggregate score of 101 over these two matches, being dismissed only once). We then succumbed to our second defeat against a very accomplished QE Barnet outfit. The pattern of two victories followed by a loss then emerged again: wins against Forest and St Albans were followed by defeat at Berkhamsted. There were some excellent individual performances during this period of the season, however. Shailen (10S2) made 61 against St Abans, Rishi again made 43 against Berkhamsted and some of the bowlers really began to hit their straps. Adi (10R2), Shailen and Matthew all put in notable performances with the ball. As the season draws to a close, I must make mention of the group as a whole unit. Despite the obvious frustrations, the squad stuck together and they really enjoyed their cricket. The behaviour of the group was exemplary; never giving into the temptations of schoolboy sledging and acting in a fashion befitting that of true sportsmen. I really enjoyed coaching the team and I wish the boys every success in the future.

U15C – Nimay (10S2)

This year, the Habs Cricket C team have had a very eventful year, playing six matches in total. However, the year didn’t start well, with two losses against Haileybury and QE Boys putting the team in a difficult position. Luckily, a strong 10-wicket win against St Albans got us back on track, with Rian’s strong batting skills greatly helping us.

Our next game was a battle against Berkhamsted School. Despite Shaurya taking an impressive 4 wickets, our joy was cut short due to a close loss. We still pushed through however and managed to win our next three games! First against Watford Grammar (where Om hit an astonishing 85 runs!) and then Brentwood School, where Nimay scored a half century and shared a 100 partnership with Saish to keep the run rate high. We then managed to end the season with a final victory thanks to a whopping 4 catches from Shaurya and a final wicket from Jagrit. Overall, these fixtures have been extremely enjoyable and thrilling for all of us, and our hard work has bee clearly been demonstrated by these positive outcomes, which we hope to continue to secure for the future!

Team captains give an insight into their individual team performances over the season

2nd XI – Mr Samuel Coleman

It has been a frustrating season for the school second team with far too many games cancelled (6) for reasons too numerous to list. The end of year 12 exams straight after Easter is an unhelpful piece of scheduling but also, most boys’ commitment to playing is just not what it used to be.

To date, we have played 9, won 3 and lost 6 with one remaining tough away fixture. Away wins against Chigwell and Watford showed that when everyone plays their part, we can compete, but home has not been a happy hunting ground with just the one win coming against Brentwood. Most losses have been disappointingly onesided affairs, and I know that we are a lot better cricketers than we have shown at times this season.

With the ball, Ahren (11J1), Aarav (U6J2) , Tasir (U6C2), Roshan (U6J1) and Rohan (L6R2) have taken regular wickets but we have struggled for runs. Madhav (U6C1) had a very good run of scores before his first team promotion and Pavi (L6H1) has been a reliable opener. However, lots of 20 odds just don’t add up to enough and we really need to bat in partnerships. Aryaveer (L6R2) did hit a half-century in the one game that Pavi didn’t run him out and Ben (U6H2) hit 42* in his last game for the school. In the field, there have been moments of brilliance as well as some to forget but not a lot in-between! If we practised and performed more consistently than we would be so much more competitive.

I would like to say special thanks to the year 13s for their commitment (Suri, AV, Aarav, Roshan, Taz, BK, Anahad, Rudra, Harman!) and I look forward to again trying to bring on more year 11s and year 12s next season in what is always a big step up from As and Bs cricket.

1st XI – Luca (L6H1)

The 2026 Habs cricket season compromised of 14 games, including 8 wins and 6 losses. For a young team consisting of mostly Year 10/11/12 it was a really promising, exciting season filled with some exceptional individual and team performances. Most notably, were wins away at Magdalen College, a school Habs had not beaten in 7 years and Forest School where Habs chased down 280 runs in 40 overs, completing one of the team's best-ever chases.

Before the season, the team had toured India in February and were looking to implement many of the learnings they had developed whilst away on tour. This not only included on pitch skills but also off pitch disciplines, focusing particularly on the mental side of the game, with mental character, resilience and confidence being crucial for any first team environment. These qualities were notable in both games against Magdalen and Forest, but also in wins against Brentwood and Fraser Bird were crucial when having to chase big totals.

Some notable individual performances of the season included Atharv (11R2) scoring over 1000 runs for the season with 7 fifties and 2 hundreds, a quite outstanding achievement. Luca (L6H1) ended the season with 20 wickets including best figures of 5-21 in the win against Forest. Ishaan (10R1) provided the ultimate entertainment to finish the season off with a stunning 48-ball century in the Four Corners Festival in the opening T20 game.

A final thank you must go to all the groundsmen and coaches for their efforts this year in helping the team and we look forward to what the future holds next season.

Athletics Season Overview

Mr Peter Pickford shares a summary of this year's Athletics season

It has been an exciting and highly successful year for athletics at Habs. Throughout the season, we have seen an outstanding range of students involved in the sport, from those taking their first steps and learning the fundamentals of events such as discus, to athletes competing on the national and international stage, including representing Great Britain.

What has been most pleasing has been the breadth of participation across the programme. Students of all ages and abilities have embraced the opportunities available to them, whether through training, school competitions or representative athletics. The enthusiasm, commitment and willingness to challenge themselves shown by our athletes has been exceptional, and the season has been packed with memorable performances, personal bests and experiences that will stay with them for years to come.

Junior Team (Years 7 and 8)

Our Junior team has enjoyed a fantastic season and should be immensely proud of everything they have achieved. The squad competed regularly in the weekly Hertfordshire League fixtures, ultimately securing a place in the prestigious Overall Cup Final. They also represented the school in the English Schools Athletics Association Track and Field Cup, the Inter-Habs Athletics Competition in Oxford and the District Championships.

The group has been characterised by its enthusiasm, dedication and willingness to step up whenever called upon. Whether competing in their specialist events or trying something completely new for the benefit of the team, the Juniors consistently demonstrated the values that make school sport so rewarding.

A special mention must go to Seth (8J), whose season has been nothing short of remarkable. Returning from a serious injury is never easy, yet Seth showed tremendous determination to work his way back and went on to dominate the hurdles throughout the season. His resilience and perseverance have been an inspiration to teammates and coaches alike.

Another highlight has been the emergence of Harry (7H). Despite competing against older athletes for much of the season, Harry regularly challenged and often surpassed many of his Year 8 counterparts in the 800m, marking himself out as one to watch in the years ahead.

Misha (8C) also deserves recognition for the energy and enthusiasm he has brought to his discus training. His commitment to improvement and positive approach to every session have been genuinely inspirational and a wonderful example of how hard work and attitude can drive progress.

Overall, the Junior squad has been exceptional. They have shown courage in the face of challenges, supported one another throughout the season and represented the school with distinction at every opportunity.

Inter Team (Years 9 and 10)

The Inter team has enjoyed an equally successful campaign, competing in all the same major competitions as the Junior squad, as well as the Hertfordshire Indoor Athletics Championships. Consisting of a talented core of Year 10 students alongside a number of highly promising Year 9 athletes, the group has delivered excellent performances throughout the year.

One athlete who has consistently stood out has been Max (10M2). His dominant displays over 400m have been among the highlights of the season, with quite a few emphatic victories demonstrating both his talent and competitive maturity.

Athletics Season Overview

Kitan (9M1) also deserves special recognition. His commitment to training and determination to continually improve have been a pleasure to witness. The progress he has made through hard work and dedication embodies everything that we seek to promote within the athletics programme.

For many of our Year 10 athletes, this season marks the end of an important chapter in their Habs athletics journey. It has been a privilege to watch you compete, develop and contribute to the success of the team. Thank you for your commitment, leadership and everything you have given to Habs Athletics over the years.

Individual Successes

Alongside our team achievements, the season has delivered some outstanding individual performances. Several athletes have earned district and county titles, reflecting both the strength and depth of athletics across the school.

We are also delighted that multiple students have been selected to represent Hertfordshire at the English Schools Championships later this month. Competing at such a prestigious event is a tremendous achievement and will undoubtedly be a valuable experience.

A high level of recognition must go to Chu (11C2) and Josh (L6C2), both of whom earned their first England vests this season.

Josh enjoyed another outstanding year over 400m, narrowly missing out on qualification for the European Championships while successfully retaining his title as Welsh National Champion. His consistency and commitment continue to place him among the country's leading athletes in his age group.

Meanwhile, Chu produced a series of dominant performances in the discus, culminating in selection to represent Great Britain at this summer's European Championships. This is a truly exceptional achievement and a fitting reward for the countless hours of dedication he has invested in his sport.

Summary

Overall, the 2026 athletics season has been a tremendous success. From beginners discovering a new passion for the sport to athletes competing on the international stage, the year has showcased everything that makes athletics such a special part of life at Habs. Above all, it has been wonderful to see so many students challenging themselves, supporting one another and taking full advantage of the opportunities available to them.

This season also marks my final year as Head of Athletics at Habs as I move to focus more fully on my role as Director of Sport. It has been a privilege to lead the programme and to work with so many dedicated students, staff and families over the years.

Next year, Miss Amy Godsave will take on the role of Head of Athletics. Having already played an instrumental part in the success of the programme, I know she will bring tremendous enthusiasm, expertise and energy to the position. Exciting discussions are already underway regarding a potential Lanzarote training tour next Easter, and there is much to look forward to in the future.

Finally, I would like to thank all the students, parents and staff who have supported athletics throughout the year. Your encouragement, commitment and passion have helped make this such a rewarding and successful season. I am incredibly proud of everything that has been achieved, and I look forward to seeing Habs Athletics continue to go from strength to strength in the years ahead.

Tennis Season Overview

Mr James Lee highlights the exceptional performances from our Habs Boys on the tennis court

U18 TENNIS TEAM WIN THE COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS

At the start of May, Kaaviyan (L6J3) and Kian (L6H3) won the U18 Hertfordshire Schools County Doubles Championships held at Welwyn Tennis Club.

They fought off competition from 20 other teams in the draw with fine victories against Haileybury, Sandringham, Chancellor’s and Verulam before easing to a 6-3 win in the final.

In the U14 event, Riyan (8S) and Joe (7H) won comfortably against Berkhamsted, Haileybury and St Columba’s but then lost out to a strong Parmiters pairing in a close encounter in the final.

HERTFORDSHIRE U12 TENNIS CHAMPIONS

On Wednesday 20 May Habs hosted the Hertfordshire Schools U12 Doubles Tournament, with over 70 boys from a mix of 10 state and independent schools competing in the evening sunshine.

After fine performances to overcome Richard Hale, Aldwickbury and Berkhamsted in the group stage and then Aldenham in the semi-final, Habs 1st pair, James (7J) and Joe (7H), reached the final. With a large crowd of parents, teachers and participants watching on, they took an early lead against a talented Verulam team before being pegged back. They then raised their level superbly to secure a 6-3 win!

In the ‘less experienced’ tournament which ran alongside the main draw, Ishaan (7J) and Nik (7R) saw off challenges from Chancellors, Parmiters, St Columba’s and Beaumont to finish in 8th place out of 20 pairings. Most importantly all the boys acted impeccably both on and off the court, showing great sportsmanship throughout the event.

Tennis Season Overview

U19 ENGLAND INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS SEMI-FINALISTS

At the end of June our best tennis players competed in the Independent Schools Tennis Championships. The top 50 tennis teams from all over the country converged on Eton to compete in the 4-day annual event – the most prestigious national tournament in the school tennis calendar. The experienced team of Sam (L6S2), Kaaviyan (L6J3), Xander (10C2) and Kian (L6H3) performed superbly to reach the semi-finals for the second year in a row!

After a first-round bye courtesy of being seeded 4th, our opening match on Sunday saw both pairs ease to straight sets wins against St Albans, before taking on a talented Hampton team on the Monday in the round of 16. With the tie poised at 1-1 after the opening matches, Sam and Xander teamed up for a oneset shoot-out to decide who would progress. Raising their level on key points, they secured a place in the quarter-finals with a 6-1 scoreline.

KCS Wimbledon provided another tough test on the Tuesday, proving too strong for Xander and Kian in the 2nd pair match. Facing an exit from the tournament Sam and Kaaviyan had to win to keep the tie alive. After some superb shot-making and real grit they came through 4-6, 6-1, 10-7 to set up another one-set shoot-out to decide who would progress to the semi-finals. Sam and Xander teamed up again and showed great composure in racing to a 6-2 win.

In the semi-finals Ewell Castle, currently the most successful tennis academy in the country, stood in our way of a place in the final. Xander and Kian battled hard in 7-6, 6-2 loss before Sam and Kaaviyan gave their all to turn the tie around but went down 7-5, 6-4 in an epic encounter. Although overcoming such strong opposition proved to be a bridge too far again, the team are certainly getting closer and look forward to the challenge of trying to win the title next year!

Tennis Season Overview

U13 ENGLAND INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS RUNNERS-UP

At the start of July in the climax of the season two of our star U13 tennis players, Rafi (8R) and James (7J) were runners-up at the Independent Schools Tennis Championships!

In the preliminary rounds the team topped their groups with wins against strong tennis schools such as RGS Newcastle, Bristol Grammar, Whitgift, Abingdon and Dulwich. This set up an exciting quarter-final against specialist tennis academy, Reeds, which Tim Henman and Jack Draper attended. After falling behind Rafi and James showed immense resilience to come back and seal an epic win on a tie-break with a 9-7 scoreline!

In the semi-finals the team eased past former champions Hampton to reach the final against Ewell Castle, another top tennis academy. The final was full of intensity and drama as Rafi and James took a commanding lead before being pegged back. The match went to another deciding tie-break which Ewell Castle edged 7-3. To finish runners-up in the ISTA John Barrett Cup is still a remarkable achievement!

Also in the U13 event Riyan (8S) and Joe (7H) performed well with 7 wins out of the 9 matches they played, including fine victories against KCS Wimbledon, Warwick, Eltham College and Epsom. They gave it their all but narrowly missed out on reaching the quarter-finals after an agonising defeat against Dulwich on a match deciding final point.

In the U15 Phillips Cup Konstantinos (10M1) and Priyan (9M1) fought hard to come from a set down against Warwick. They secured a memorable 2-6, 7-6 (8-6),10-6 win in one of the most exciting matches of the tournament to reach the semi-finals where their run ended against Radley.

Water Polo

The 2025–26 Water Polo season has been one of the strongest to date, with participation growing across all age groups from Prep through to Senior School, and close to 100 boys involved in the programme. The U18 squad led the way, competing in both the London League and National Cup competitions, playing over 20 fixtures across the season. They achieved numerous notable victories, including strong league performances and progression to the latter stages of the National Cup, reaching the semi-finals and narrowly missing out on a place in the final. The U16s also had a competitive season in the London League, finishing an impressive 3rd overall and reaching the London Schools League A Final. The U15 team enjoyed outstanding success at national level, finishing runners-up in the English Schools’ National Championships, demonstrating excellent consistency and resilience across multiple rounds of competition.

Further down the school, the U14s delivered a dominant London League campaign, winning all of their fixtures and establishing themselves as one of the strongest sides in the region. The U13s continued this success at national level, finishing 3rd in the country at the National Finals, alongside strong performances in earlier rounds and tournaments. In the Prep School, the U12s began their competitive journey with great enthusiasm, finishing 2nd in the U13B regional competition, while also fielding, for the first time, a U12B team in friendly fixtures an important milestone reflecting the strength and depth of the programme. Across all age groups, the season featured a wide range of fixtures, including league matches, national competitions, tournaments, and friendly games, providing a rich and competitive experience for all players.

Year 8 Water Polo Tour – Arras, France

A highlight of the season was the Year 8 water polo tour to Arras, France, where 13 students took part in a memorable end-of-season trip. Over the course of less than 72 hours, the group travelled from Habs Boys via Folkestone to Arras. The tour combined cultural experiences, team bonding, and competitive water polo. After arriving on Friday, the team enjoyed an Italian dinner before relaxing in the hotel watching World Cup action. On Saturday, the group visited Lille, spending the day exploring the cobbled streets, celebrating Rahul M’s 13th birthday with burgers and crepes, and enjoying time together at an amusement park. That evening, the boys returned to Arras to play a friendly match against the local team in a closely contested game lasting over 90 minutes, with Habs emerging victorious by three goals. The day concluded with dinner in the beautiful Arras piazza. On the final day, the team visited Plopsaland Aqua Park in De Panne, Belgium, followed by the traditional Year 8 photo stop in Dunkirk, before returning home via Calais. The tour was a fantastic success, highlighting the strong camaraderie and enthusiasm within the group.

Swimming

The 2025–26 swimming season has been equally busy and successful, with a comprehensive programme of fixtures and competitions spanning all year groups from Year 7 through to senior swimmers. Across the season, the squad competed in over 15 major events, including the ESSA Regional Championships, London Swimming League galas, Herts League fixtures, Super League competitions, and multiple district-level meets. This provided swimmers with consistent racing opportunities across a wide range of competitive levels. At senior level (Years 11–13), swimmers competed regularly in the London Swimming League and Herts League, delivering strong and consistent performances across multiple galas hosted at venues such as Highgate, Haileybury, and Habs. The team achieved particularly notable success in progressing to the Herts League Final 8, highlighting their competitiveness across the county. In addition, several swimmers represented the school at district competitions and the ESSA Regionals, showcasing strong individual and relay performances against high-quality opposition.

The middle school swimmers (Years 9–10) formed the backbone of the squad, competing across nearly all fixtures, including Herts League rounds, Super League events, and district galas. Their depth and reliability allowed the school to field competitive teams across multiple age groups simultaneously. Consistent participation across November and December fixtures, as well as into the spring term, ensured strong team scoring positions and contributed significantly to overall league standings.

At the lower school level, Year 7 swimmers were heavily involved in a structured and progressive competition pathway, including dedicated Herts League Year 7 events and fixtures for both boys and girls. These events, hosted at venues such as Berkhamsted, St Albans, and St Helen’s, provided an excellent introduction to competitive school swimming. The enthusiasm and commitment shown by this group has laid a strong foundation for future development within the programme.

Across all age groups, swimmers demonstrated excellent commitment, regularly competing in back-to-back weekly fixtures throughout the autumn and spring terms. The programme also successfully balanced performance and participation, ensuring opportunities for both experienced swimmers and those new to competition. Overall, the swimming season has been characterised by high engagement, strong league performances, and continued development across all year groups, reinforcing the strength and depth of aquatics at Habs.

Inter House competitions

As usual, internal competitions played an important role in the programme, with both Inter-House Swimming and Inter-House Water Polo proving to be a huge success. These events saw many students taking part, providing an inclusive opportunity for boys of all abilities to represent their houses, try something new, and engage in aquatics. The enthusiasm, participation levels, and competitive spirit on display highlighted the continued growth of both swimming and water polo within the school.

Prep School Sport

Mr Darren Miller, Mr Jamie Doolan, Mr Ed Lowe and Mr Greg Hedger illustrate the various sporting achievements from the Prep School

The Summer Term has been another successful one for sport at the Prep School. Pupils have represented Habs with pride across a wide range of sports, enjoying opportunities to compete locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. Alongside some outstanding results, it has been particularly pleasing to see the commitment, teamwork and sportsmanship shown by pupils across all year groups. The breadth of opportunity on offer continues to grow, allowing more pupils than ever to experience the enjoyment and challenge of representing the school.

Barbados Cricket and Football Tour

During the Easter break, our Year 5 and 6 boys travelled to Barbados for a memorable cricket and football tour. Across eight fixtures, they competed against strong local opposition, playing with determination, skill and excellent sportsmanship. The boys embraced every challenge and represented the school superbly throughout the tour, winning three of their four cricket fixtures and producing some excellent football performances. Beyond the sport, the tour provided invaluable opportunities to develop confidence, independence and friendships, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Cricket

Cricket has enjoyed another excellent season across the Prep School. The U11A team reached the ESCA National Finals after progressing through the East Regional Festival before winning the U11 County Cup following a thrilling last-ball victory over Merchant Taylors'. Strong performances throughout the fixture programme against schools including St Martin's, Merchant Taylors' and The Beacon reflected the continued progress made across the season.

Following the successful Barbados tour, our Year 5 and 6 pupils continued to play an excellent standard of cricket while developing their tactical understanding of the game. A combined Year 5 and 6 boys' and girls' team also qualified for the School Games Dynamos County Final, highlighting the strength of cricket across both the Prep and Junior Schools.

Our Year 3 and 4 pupils made excellent progress throughout the term, growing in confidence with both bat and ball through regular fixtures and co-curricular training. It was also pleasing to see several Year 2 boys represent the school for the first time at the Hertsmere Rapid Fire Cricket Festival, where they impressed with their enthusiasm, teamwork and sportsmanship.

Overall, the season reflected the continued growth of cricket throughout the Prep School, with strong participation, competitive success and a genuine enjoyment of the game.

National Schools Biathlon Finals

Congratulations to Noah and Felix, who qualified for the National Schools Biathlon Finals following excellent performances earlier in the year. Noah finished 19th nationally in the Year 5 competition, while Felix placed 20th in the Year 6 event. The Year 5 team also secured an impressive 8th-place finish in the team competition, a fantastic achievement at national level and reward for their hard work throughout the season.

Golf

It has been another successful year for golf, with pupils competing at a very high standard throughout the term. At the ISGA Junior Finals held at Radley College, Habs finished 10th out of 17 finalist schools, with both Avni and Krishan performing well against a strong field

A particular highlight was Avni's victory in the IAPS Girls' Championship at Minchinhampton Golf Club. Competing against over 170 golfers from 40 schools, she produced an excellent round of consistent golf to claim the title by a single Stableford point.

The ISGA Junior Golf League also proved successful, with Avni and Krishan leading the standings after the opening round against Westbrook Hay and Gayhurst, giving themselves the opportunity to compete for a place in the National Finals. It was equally pleasing to see Prep and Junior School pupils playing together at the IAPS Golf event, demonstrating excellent teamwork throughout the competition.

Prep School Sport

Swimming

Swimming continued to be a real strength of the Prep School this year, with pupils qualifying for both the IAPS National Finals at the London Aquatics Centre and the English Schools' Swimming Championships in Sheffield.

At the IAPS National Finals, our swimmers competed against some of the strongest school swimmers in the country and produced several outstanding performances, including a 14th-place national finish, a swimmer reaching the final to place 9th overall, and a convincing heat victory by more than two seconds.

Another highlight came at the English Schools' Swimming Championships in Sheffield. Simply qualifying for this prestigious event was an excellent achievement and provided the team with a memorable experience competing at the highest level of school swimming. The pupils also qualified for the B Final of the freestyle relay, an impressive accomplishment that reflected the quality and depth of swimming across the Prep School.

Tennis

The IAPS National Tennis Finals at Clifton College provided another excellent opportunity for our pupils to compete against the strongest schools in the country. The boys performed superbly throughout the competition, losing just one set on their way to becoming champions. The girls also enjoyed an excellent day, producing some outstanding singles and doubles performances against strong opposition. Both teams demonstrated great resilience, teamwork and sportsmanship throughout the tournament.

NFL Flag Football

Our U11 team enjoyed a fantastic experience at the NFL Flag Football South East Regional Finals. The event marked the culmination of a successful collaborative Prep and Junior School co-curricular programme, and it was rewarding to see the progress made by all the pupils involved. The team played with energy, enthusiasm and excellent teamwork, representing the school superbly throughout the competition.

Ski Racing

The Habs Prep and Junior School Ski Team enjoyed another successful season. At the UK Independent Schools Indoor Ski Championships, pupils produced several impressive performances, with numerous top-10 finishes within their respective age groups, demonstrating the depth of talent within the squad

Earlier in the year, the team also competed at the SATIPS Ski Racing Competition at Hemel Snow Centre, where strong individual performances helped Habs secure an excellent thirdplace team finish. Across both events, pupils showed resilience, determination and outstanding support for one another.

Table Tennis

IAPS National Finals

Our Under 11 table tennis squad produced a fantastic performance at the IAPS National Finals, with all four players progressing through to the knockout stages – an outstanding achievement.

Riaan was the standout performer, displaying exceptional determination and skill as he battled his way to the final, finishing as IAPS National Runner-Up after a superb campaign.

Butterfly National Schools Championships

Hab enjoyed another excellent weekend of table tennis at the Butterfly National Schools Championships, with impressive performances across several age groups.

Under 11 Boys – National Runners-Up

The Under 11 boys delivered a superb team performance, reaching the national final before narrowly losing to London Academy. Their resilience, teamwork and competitive spirit were evident throughout the competition, earning them a well-deserved National Runners-Up finish.

These results reflect the tremendous commitment and hard work of our players, who continue to establish Habs as one of the country's leading school table tennis programmes.

Looking Back

The Summer Term has provided another excellent range of sporting opportunities for our pupils. From first experiences representing the school to competing at national level and touring overseas, pupils have embraced every opportunity with enthusiasm and commitment. While the successes listed here are worthy of celebration, it has been equally pleasing to see the continued growth in participation, the willingness to learn and improve, and the pride with which pupils have represented Habs throughout the term.

My thanks go to all the staff, parents and supporters who have given their time and encouragement throughout another successful summer of Prep School sport. We look forward to building on these achievements in the year ahead.

Chu (11C2)

My first international competition felt quite special, mainly because it came after a quite disappointing season the year before; it felt quite validating to know that the team selectors saw potential even when I hadn’t necessarily performed at the standard that I normally would have.

Getting the experience to not only compete abroad for the first time, but for England as well was on one hand exciting, but also quite daunting as I was surrounded by other athletes who in some cases held national records or were some of the best in Europe or the world. This, as well as the fact that it was my season opener, made it a stressful experience. I managed to achieve a throw of 51.27m which at the time placed me 11th in Europe.

My next international competition came much later in the year and took place in Loughborough but carried much higher stakes than my previous international competition, as it was my last opportunity before the GB European U18 trials in June to achieve the qualifying standard for the European Championships. Despite what felt like a good warm-up, I wasn’t able to perform in the actual competition and finished with a final distance of 53.12m which was just over a metre away from the European standard of 54.50m. I recently competed at the GB European U18 trials, which was my last chance to throw the European standard to secure a place on team GB for the European U18 Championships. I threw a distance of 57.49m which was not only 2nd place, but also above the European standard, which increases the likelihood that I will be selected for the European Championships.

Josh (L6C2)

On 17 May, I was selected to represent the England Development 4x400m relay team at the Loughborough International Athletics Meet, where I competed against senior teams representing England, Scotland, Wales, and GB and NI U20s.

Prior to my selection, I attended a relay camp at Brunel University, where I was invited by England Athletics. During this camp, I developed valuable skills in relay changeovers and baton handling. Following this, I was selected for the England Development team –comprised of U18 athletes – through a committee process that considered both season-best performances and performance at the camp.

Going into the race, we were by far the youngest team and did not carry high expectations. Instead, we viewed it as a valuable opportunity to gain experience competing against some of the best athletes in the country and internationally. I was selected to run the first leg, and what truly put the experience into perspective was lining up in the blocks next to an Olympian. It was surreal to compete alongside such accomplished and experienced athletes, and it proved to be incredibly inspiring.

I felt extremely honoured and grateful to represent my country for the first time, while also gaining a real insight into elite-level athletics. This experience has motivated me to train harder and continue improving, with the goal of one day reaching the level of the athletes I competed alongside.

Student Focus: Sam (L6S2)

Over the past 12 months, I have competed across a wide range of tennis tournaments, both nationally and internationally. This period has been particularly important for my development, as it has allowed me to consistently test myself against high-level opposition and gain valuable competitive experience. As a result of these performances, I am currently ranked 12th in the UK at U18 level and approximately 650 in the world rankings, reflecting steady progress within both the national and international game. During this period, I have made significant progress in both performance and ranking, and I am currently positioned 12th in the UK at U18 level and approximately 650 in the world rankings.

One of the highlights of my recent competitive season was winning a Junior International tournament in Lithuania. This achievement demonstrated my ability to compete and succeed in an international environment against a strong and diverse field of players. Alongside this, I secured a UK National title in the Men’s category, an important milestone in my development as it required me to perform against older and more experienced opponents. I have also begun transitioning into the professional level of the sport. Recently, I competed in my first professional tournament at the University of Stirling, where I played six high-intensity matches against strong opposition. I finished the tournament with £500 in prize money, an experience that strengthened my confidence competing at this higher standard and provided valuable exposure to the demands of professional competition.

In addition to my individual success, I take pride in my performances within team environments. I was selected to represent Middlesex in both the U18 and Men’s teams at the County Cup, the most prestigious national team competition in Britain. In the U18 event, I competed at the number one position and remained undefeated throughout the tournament, playing a key role in helping the team achieve promotion to Division 1. Competing across both age groups has helped develop my adaptability, resilience, and consistency.

Looking ahead, I will be competing in the U19 Independent School Championships at Eton, where I will aim to win the title for the third consecutive year – an achievement that would reflect both consistency and sustained performance at the highest level of school competition.

Beyond this season, I have committed to continuing my sporting and academic development at a Division 1 university in the United States. This opportunity will provide access to world-class facilities, structured training, and high-level competition, alongside a strong academic pathway. I am excited to take this next step as I continue to push towards my long-term goals within the sport.

Balancing Cricket and Exams

Tom (U6H1) gives his personal experiences of juggling both First XI Cricket and his A Level studies

Balancing the demands of A Level studies while representing the school cricket team has been one of the most challenging yet rewarding experiences of my time at school. Both commitments require a high level of discipline, resilience, and dedication, and learning to manage them side by side has pushed me to grow not only as a student, but also as a teammate.

At first, combining the pressures of academic work with the responsibility of playing school cricket seemed daunting. However, I quickly realised that cricket became one of my most valuable outlets. Stepping onto the field after a long day of revision provides a welcome break from textbooks and exams, allowing me to reset mentally and return to my studies feeling refreshed and more focused. In many ways, cricket has helped me stay motivated during what can be an intense and stressful period.

Being part of the school team also brings a strong sense of camaraderie. Training sessions and match days provide the chance to spend time with friends, work together towards shared goals, and enjoy the simple pleasure of being active outdoors. These moments have been crucial in maintaining a healthy balance, reminding me that success at school is not only about academic achievement, but also about wellbeing and enjoying the journey.

Juggling cricket commitments alongside revision has required careful planning and strong time management. With matches, training, and coursework all competing for attention, I have learned the importance of staying organised and keeping on top of my workload. Rather than relying on last-minute cramming, I have focused on consistent, structured revision, ensuring that I can meet both my academic responsibilities and my role in the team. This approach has helped me develop a proactive mindset and strengthened my ability to stay disciplined and focused.

Of course, it has not always been easy. There have been busy weeks where deadlines and fixtures overlap, and moments where maintaining balance has been a real challenge. However, these experiences have taught me how to cope under pressure, prioritise effectively, and remain committed even when things become demanding.

Looking back, continuing to play cricket during A Levels has been one of the best decisions I have made. It has supported my mental wellbeing, strengthened friendships, and taught me essential life skills that will be invaluable in the future whether at university, in the workplace, or beyond.

This experience has shown that with determination, organisation, and a positive mindset, it is absolutely possible to succeed both in the classroom and on the field.
