■ A Moonee Valley City Council grant is empowering a local community organisation to keep family violence survivors connected with their much-loved pets. Second Chance Animal Rescue received a four-year Partnerships Grant in 0222 for its Safe House for Pets Program, which assists people fleeing violence to continue caring for their pets. The supports are also available to people experiencing homelessness or senior community members undergoing medical care. The organisation also runs a free, monthly pet food collection centre at Westfield Airport West. In just the past 12 months, the grant funding has made it possible for the organisation to assist more than 1000 pets in the Moonee Valley Council area, primarily cats and dogs Some 253 pets have acceeesed access to emergency boarding, and 430 pet owners in need have benefited from free pet supplies such as collars, leads, bedding, kennels, food, enrichment items, jackets and toys.

Enoch Chan is Chef Hat winner
● Enoch Chan
■ Enoch Chan, 24, has been named the 2025 Nestlé Golden Chef’s Hat Award Victoria Cook-Off Winner. This achievement secures him a spot in the Grand Final of Australia’s longest-running culinary competition for young chefs. Held at William Angliss Institute in Melbourne, the Victorian cook-off saw 24 young chefs compete. Enoch, who currently works at Juni Melbourne, impressed the judges with his bold two-course menu and refined technique, earning him a gold medal on the day. Chef Enoch said: “This competition has allowed me to connect with mentors from across the country and hone my skills… My goal is to travel the world to experience different food cultures firsthand to build my skills and creativity and reflect this in my cooking.” In the competition’s 60th year, Enoch will now represent Victoria at the Nestlé Golden Chef’s Hat Award Grand Final this September at Fine Food Australia in Sydney. There, he will compete against top young chefs from across Australia and New Zealand for the prestigious title of Golden Chef of the Year.
Hume acts on dumped rubbish ● Tarneit Grand Central.
■ Hume City Council is reminding residents of steps they can take to manage and prevent illegal dumping. A Council representative said: “If you’ve found dumped waste on your property, especially when it has spread from neighbouring land, here’s what you can do: ■ Report the dumped rubbish to Council online or by phone. ■ If the rubbish appears to come from a nearby private block, and you know the landowner, try to notify them directly. ■ Take photos and note the location and date of the dumping. ■ Vacant block owners can act by fencing or securing their property to discourage illegal dumping. ■ Consider security cameras or lighting. ■ Before installing any fences, bollards or retaining walls, check Council’s guidelines and building requirements Hume Council offers free waste disposal options including: ■ Hard waste collections ■ Access to the Resource Recovery Centres
