TheName

IntheNewTestament,theword“saint”issimplyanothernameforaChristian.Saintmeans“holy one ”andreferstoallthosewhoareinChrist.Whatmakessomeoneasaintisnottheabsenceofsin, butthepresenceoftheHolySpirit Thismeansitisnotsomethingthatcanbeearned,butisonlytobe receivedbecauseofthegraceofGod.TheNewTestamentextendsthestatusof“saint”tothechildren ofbelievers(1Cor.7:14)whoaretoberaised“intheLord”(Eph.6:1-4).WebelieveallChristian childrenoughttohaveadistinctlyChristianeducation.

TheJerusalemCross

ThecrossisthedefiningeventofhistorywhereJesuswascrucifiedforthesinsoftheworld(1Cor. 15:3,1John2:2).Thisparticularrenderingofthecross(historicallycalledthe“JerusalemCross”)has theaddedbenefitofdepictingthestructureofcreationandredemption.Justasfourriversflowedfrom Edentowatertheworld,sothegospelgoesforwardtothefourcornersoftheearthforitshealing (Gen.1:10;Rev.14:6;22:1-2).

TheShield

TheshieldrepresentstheChristianfaith.ThePsalmistoftensays,“TheLordismystrengthandmy shield.”GodisashieldandiswhereaChristianputstheirconfidence.Furthermore,Paulsaysthata shieldispartofaChristian’sspiritualarmorandrepresentsfaithinGodastheygoforwardinthename ofChrist(Eph 6:10-18)

ClassicalChristianEducation

“Classical”

“Classical”referstoalongtraditionofeducationthatemphasizesseekingaftertruth,goodness,and beauty.ThisisprimarilydonethroughthestudyoftheLiberalArtsandthe"greatbooks"ofWestern civilizationthathaveshapedourmodernsociety. WhatmakesClassicaleducationparticularlydistinct isitsapproachtohowstudentsaretaught.Classicalschoolsdividetheeducationallifeofachildinto threephases(grammar,logic,andrhetoric)knownastheTrivium,whichtakesadvantageofastudent’s naturalcapacityforcertaintypesoflearning.Inthis,Classicaleducationseeksto“cutwiththegrain” oflearningdevelopment.Classicaleducationfocusesonhowtothinkandlearnwithanemphasison virtueandwisdom Itispreciselythiskindofeducationthathasproducedcountlessleaders,inventors, artists,andtheologiansthroughouthistory

“Christian”

Tobe“Christian”isthereminderthateverythingwedohasJesusatthecenter.Weareconvincedthat becauseGodcreatedeverythingandJesusisLord,hehassomethingtosayabouteverything Christian parentshavetheuniqueobligationtoraisetheirchildrenintheeducationoftheLord(Eph.6:1-4;cf. Deut.6).Noeducationsystemisneutral.Asthevaluesofpubliceducationbecomemorediametrically opposedtothevaluesofChristianliving,thecontrastbetweenthekingdomsofthisworldandthe kingdomofGodbecomeallthestarker WeacknowledgeandaffirmthatinChrist“arehiddenallthe treasuresofwisdomandknowledge”(Col2:3)and“thefearofTheLordisthebeginningofknowledge” (Prov.1:7).

“Education”

“Education”isaboutthewholeperson.Educationismorethanheadknowledge,itistheformationof theheart,soul,mind,andstrengthwithChristatthecenter.Webelieveeducationbeginswithwonder andendsinworship Webelieveeducationisdiscipleshipandthatthosewhoteachyourchildren discipleyourchildren.OuraimisthateachstudentwouldlearntocultivatealifethatlivesoutJesus’

1TheGreekwordpaideia(oftentranslated“education”or“upbringing”)connotesmuchmorethan whatistaughtinaclassroom.Paideiareferstoawholewayofpubliclifeandofcitizenship.Inthe Christiancontext,itreferstoadistinctivelyChristianeducationwhichinformsalloflifeunderthe LordshipofChrist(eg,Eph 6:1-4;cf Deut 6:4-9)

visionofthekingdomofGodinallthings.Oneoftheadvantagesofeducationinaninstitutional settingisthatchildrenlearngodlyhabitsandpracticesinthecontextofcommunity.

EightGuidingPrinciples

1. JoyfulEthos:

AllofChristianlife(includingeducation)flowsfromjoy JoyistheethosofChristianliving becauseitisfoundedonthegoodnewsofwhatJesushasaccomplished.Thepurposeof education,therefore,isnottoearnGod’sacceptancebutto“growinthegraceandknowledgeof ourLordandSaviorJesusChrist Tohimbetheglorybothnowandtothedayofeternity”(2 Peter3:18).Educationbeginsinwonderandendsinworship.

2. DisciplinedTraining:

ChristiansarecalledtoworkhardasuntotheLordknowingourlaborisnotinvain(Col.3:23, 1Cor.15:58).TheBiblerepeatedlycallsustotrainingandconstantpracticebecause“ everyone whenheisfullytrainedwillbelikehisteacher”(Luke6:40;cf Heb 5:14,1Tim 4:8;2Tim 3:16).Wedesireourstudentstopursueexcellenceandsubjectmasteryoutofjoyandlovefor Christ.

3. CommunityContext:

AcriticalcomponentofChristianeducationiscommunity.Educationisnotsimply individual,becauseScripturesaysthattohaveknowledgewithoutlove,istohavenothing(1 Cor.13:2).AllSaintsAcademyexistsasaninstitutiontoremindstudentstheyarejointheirs togetherinGod’skingdom,“fellowcitizenswiththesaints”(Eph.2:19). Inthiscontext, studentsarecalledto“looknotonlytohisowninterests,butalsototheinterestsofothers”andto “bearoneanother’sburdensandthereforefulfillthelawofChrist”(Rom 8:17,Phil 2:4-5,Gal 6:2).

4. HistoricalRootedness:

Weseektohonorthepastbyreceivingthebestofwhathasbeenhandeddownfromone generationtoanother.WebelievetheHolySpirithasbeenatworkthroughoutthehistoryof theChurchandwestandinarichlegacywithsaintswhohavecomebeforeus(Ps.145:4-6, Heb 12:1,Jude3) Weintentionallylookbackwardinordertomoveforward,particularlyin areasofbiblicalunderstandingandpedagogy. Excavatingthepastforwisdomhelpstoavoid whatC.S.Lewiscalled“chronologicalsnobbery.”

5. Christ-CenteredIntegration:

WebelieveallthingsweremadethroughJesus,and“andinhimallthingsholdtogether”(Col. 1:15-17).Becauseofthis,webelievethereisanintrinsicorderandbeautytoallthings.Jesus hassomethingtosayabouteverysubjectbecauseeverysubjectisultimatelysubjecttohim Therefore,allsubjectsareintegratedatsomelevelintheunfoldingofcreation.Inthissense, ClassicalChristianeducationcuts“withthegrain”oftheuniverseofhowweweredesignedto learn."InChristarehiddenallthetreasuresofwisdomandknowledge"(Col.2:3).

6. VirtueFormation:

Virtueformationistherecognitionthatwearenoteducatingjusttheminds,butthesoulsof students Educationisfarmorethaninformationforthehead;educationincludesthe formationofone’scharacter AsancientGreeksrecognized,“Knowledgewithoutvirtueis dangerous.”Ouraimisthatthestudentswouldgrowintheir“knowledgeandalldiscernment” andbeabletoapproveofwhateveristrue,honorable,just,pure,lovely,commendable, excellent,orworthyofpraise(Phil 1:9-11;cf Phil 4:8-9,Gal 5:22-23)

7. AccessibleQuality:

WebelieveeveryChristianparenthastheresponsibilitytoprovideadistinctlyChristian educationfortheirchildren(Eph 6:1-4,Deut 6:4-9) Weexisttopartnerwithfamiliesby providingarobust,Christ-centered,andclassicaleducationthatisaccessibletoallChristian

families.Todoso,westriveforatuitionstructurethatisbothfiscallyresponsibleandsensitive tothefinancialcircumstancesofdifferentfamilies.Wearecommittedtofundraisethroughthe generosityofothersinordertoprovideFinancialAssistanceonacase-by-casebasis

8. FortheWorld:

WebelieveGodcreatedtheworld,lovestheworld,andisintheprocessofredeemingthe world WealsobelievetherearepowersandprincipalitiesthatseektodestroyallthatGodhas made.ButwealsobelieveoneofthemeansbywhichGodwillovercometheworldisthrough raisinggodlychildren.Psalm127saysthat“ChildrenareaheritagefromtheLord”andare “arrowsinthehandofawarrior”Webelievechildrenarenottobeprotectedfromtheworld, butpreparedfortheworld.Webelieveeducationformsstudentstobe“wiseasserpentsandas innocentasdoves”(Matt.10:16).Tothatend,educationisnotprimarilyaboutjob-readiness orcollege-placement(thoughgraduatesinClassicalChristianschoolstendtoexcelinboth). Rather,atAllSaintsAcademy,webelieveeducationchieflyexiststoadvancethekingdomof GodforthegloryofGod.

PHILOSOPHYOFEDUCATION

Wedisciplestudentsingospel-centriceducationthatisrobustlyChristianandpedagogicallyclassical. WeequipstudentstoflourishinthisworldbybeingwhatJesusdescribesas“wiseasserpentsandgentle asdoves”(Matt 10:16) Ourdesireistocultivateheartsthatwonder,andworshiptheTriuneGodand therebydiscernwhatisgood,true,andbeautiful. Wepartnerwithparentsinthisendeavorand purposetomaximizetheindividualabilitiesthatGodhasgiveneachchild.Wedesirestudentsto engageinaloveoflearningthroughintegratedfieldsofstudythatpromotemasteryandbuildthe thinkingskillsnecessaryforasuccessfullifeinservingtheLord

PhilosophyofHumanities

Tostudythehumanitiesistostudywhatitmeanstobemade“intheimageofGod.” Weintegratethe variousfieldsofstudy:Literature,History,Theology,Writing,andGrammar. Wejourneythrougheras oftimeasanentireschoolandrotateonafouryearcycle: Ancient,Medieval,Modern,andUS History OurfocusisprimarilyonourWesternheritage,butwebelievethatunderstandingEastern historyisalsoimportanttostudyingtheImageofGodandtherebyweavethisalongsidearobuststudy ofourWesternheritage.

PhilosophyofBible

TostudyScriptureistostudythestoryoftheworld Formuchofchurchhistory,catechismswere developedasawayofaidingthatstudyandasawaytoteachandpassalong(traditioortradition)the faithtoconvertsandchildren.Believersare “tocontendforthefaiththatwasonceforalldeliveredtothe saints”(Jude1:3).Duringtheearlyformativeyears,learningcatechismsoftheChristianfaithis quintessentialtochildren Unfortunately,inourmodernculturetheuseofcatechismhaslargelybeen lost.Catechismsafeguardsfromheresy,teachesthegrammarofthefaith,andbuildsafoundationfor walkinginrighteousness. Wewillmovestudentsfrom“milktomeat”aswestudyGod’sWordandas theygrowintheirmaturity. Application,discerningvariousdoctrinalstancesanddeeply understandingthetruthlaidoutinScriptureisessentialtoaneducationatAllSaints Therebythe Biblewillbeinterwoventhroughouteveryfieldofstudy. Scriptureisfoundationaltohowweseethe worldandistherebythecoretoallwedo.

PhilosophyofHistory

Thevoicesofhistoryhaveavoteinourworldtoday,andbyreadingoriginalsources,storiesfrom variouserasandunderstandingthecontextofhistoryasitwasbeingwritten,wehaveadeeper understandingofthestorythatGodistellingandthewayinwhichheisunfoldingaworldthatis aimedatcommunionwithGodthroughtheredemptiveworkofJesus. Tostudyandknowhistoryis toseekwisdomfromthosewhohavegonebeforeus(theirsuccessesandfailures)andbuilduponthis forfuturedecisions

PhilosophyofLiterature

GodisamasterfulstorytelleraswelearninScriptureandasevidencedbyJesus’useofparablesashe taught. Toreadaboutcharactersandobservetheirlivesunfoldingaidsusinunderstandingboththe imagebearingaspectsandthebrokennessofhumankind. Byreadingthroughaprotagonist’sdecision, wearebroughtface-to-facewithwhatwemightdointhatcircumstance. Byreadingtheoutcomeofa decision,wegainwisdominwhatresultsmaycomefromourdecisions Toreadistoopenthedoorto pondering,andponderingthatisaimedattruthbuildsdiscernment. Wereadthebestandbrightest writersfromboththeChristianandnon-Christianworldwithanintentionaleffortto“takeevery thoughtcaptive”(2Cor 10:5)andusediscernmenttoleavebehindthatwhichisnottrue,good,and beautiful Thisprocessisreferredtoas“plunderingtheEgyptians”whichistotakeandlearnfromthe bestofancientcultures(Ex.12:36).

PhilosophyofArt

ArtispartofarobustChristianeducationbecauseofitsplaceinScripture InGenesis,Godcreates, sees,andevaluatesallthathemakesandcallsitgood.Increation,beautyprecedesutility.Havingbeen madeintheimageofGod,peoplemirrorGodincreatinganddiscerningthatwhichisbeautiful.Art alsohasanethicaldimension(Gen.3:6;Psalm101:3;Matt.6:22;Phil.4:8;1Jn.2:16).Furthermore, artservesasawindowintoothertimesandcultureswhichaidsafullerstudyofanthropology Educationisnotjustaboutthinkingacademically,butalsoappreciatingthatwhichistrue,good,and beautifultothegloryofGod.

PhilosophyofMusic

MusicandsingingarepartofthewarpandwoofofScriptureandscatteredthroughouttheOldand NewTestament.TheBiblecontinuallycallsforsinging(Ex.15;Psalm96;Psalm100;Eph.5:19).God isdescribedasrejoicingoveruswith“loudsinging”(Zeph 3:17) ThebookofPsalmsconsistsof150 songsforthepeopleofGodtosingwhichcovertherangeofemotion.Furthermore,thebenefitsof studyingmusicandsingingincludeandincorporateanalyticthinking,language,breathcontrol,math, socialskills,andconfidence.Inaddition,studyingmusiccultivatespatience,humility,goodness,and self-controlwhicharefruitsoftheSpirit AtAllSaintsAcademy,wewantourstudentstobe well-equippedtoheedthewordsoftheApostlePaul,“LetthewordofChristdwellinyourichly, teachingandadmonishingoneanotherinallwisdom,singingpsalmsandhymnsandspiritualsongs” (Col 3:16)

PhilosophyofLanguage

Godcreatedustocommunicatethroughlanguage.GodhimselfisacommunicativeGodincreation, inScripture,andthroughhisSon whomJohncallsthevery“Word”ofGod.AtAllSaints,weteach Latinbecauseitgivesusafoundationalunderstandingofthemechanicsoflanguagewhichfurther developsourmasteryofEnglish About80%ofEnglishvocabularyisborrowed,mainlyfromLatin Latinisfoundationaltootherlanguages(e.g.,French,Italian,Spanish,Portuguese,andRomanian). Eventheabbreviation“e.g.”standsfortheLatinphraseexempligratia,meaning“forexample.”

DevelopingLatinskills, becausethelanguageiswellstructured,trainsthemindtorecognizelogical ordering What’smore,manyhistoricaldocumentsofWesterncivilizationandofourChristian heritagewerewritteninLatin.Latinalsoformsthebasisformuchofthevocabularyinseveral professionalcareers(e.g.,law,medicine,botany).

PhilosophyofMath

Mathisultimatelyseekingobjectivetruth ItisthewaythatGodformedtheuniverseand understandingmathgivesusagreaterunderstandingoftheGodoforder.Thereareimportantskillsto solvingproblems, andweaffordtimeformasterysothatstudentscanhaveadeepandrobust understanding.Weequipstudentstopuzzlethroughproblemsandultimatelyseektruthinthis importantfieldofstudythatcorrelatestobothpragmaticandtheoreticalstudiesinabroadarrayof areas.

PhilosophyofScience

ToobserveandwonderatGod’screationispreparationforworship. Scienceisafieldofstudythat helpsusinterpretGod’sworld,butitnevertrumpsScripture.Scriptureisourplumblinefortruthand becausealltruthisGod’struth,continuingtodiscovermoreaboutGod’screationthroughScience allowsustoknowmoreaboutitsCreator Wearecalledtotakedominionoftheworld Studentsare betterequippedformasteryofskillinscientificstudythroughstudyingGod’srevelationofthecreated order.

CULTURALISSUES

OnCreation

“Hehasmadeeverythingbeautifulinitstime Also,hehasputeternityintoman’sheart,yetsothathe cannotfindoutwhatGodhasdonefromthebeginningtotheend.” Ecclesiastes3:11

Whenitcomestothetopicofcreationandtheoriginofallthings,AllSaintsAcademyiscommittedto theseriousstudyofGod’srevelation intheformofbothspecialrevelation(2Tim 3:17-17;Heb 4:12;1Thess.2:13;James1:22)andgeneralrevelation(Ps.19,104;Prov.6:6-8;Rom.1:19-20).We seektodothisthroughsubmittingtoGod’sWordandstudyingGod’sworld.Indoingso,studentswill beconfrontedwithGod’scharacter,order,beauty,andgoodness.WebelieveallChristiansarecalledto discerntheworldinsuchawaythatitproducesgratitude,wonder,andworship

Asaresult,AllSaintsAcademydoesnotteachaDarwinianormaterialistictheoryoftheuniversein whichanimalsandhumansevolvedfromasinglebiologicalorigin WeteachwhattheBibleclearly intendsforustounderstandandprioritize:

Throughoutchurchhistory,however,therehasnotbeenaconsensusonhowtodefinecertainwordsor interpretcertainpassagesinthecreationnarrative(asitpertainstotheageoftheEarthandGod’s processofcreation) Fordevelopmentalandacademicreasons,AllSaintsAcademyfindsitmost helpfultoteachyoungstudentsayoung-earthcreationstorywhilechallengingolderstudentsto considerotherhistoricalpositionswithcharityandscrutiny.

OnGender,Marriage,andSexuality

AllSaintsAcademyiscommittedtotheinfallibilityoftheChristianScripturesinallmattersoffaith andlife.OuraimistobealignedwiththetruthoftheBibleevenwhenthatmeansbeingoutof alignmentwithwhatisconsideredpopularorculturallyacceptable Moreover,especiallyasitpertains tothestatementsbelow,AllSaintsAcademystandsincontinuitywithwhattheChurchhastaught, believed,andconfessedforover2000years. Inthesematters,weseektobebothclearand compassionate

Webelievethateveryperson regardlessofsinfulbeliefsoractions mustbeshownlove,kindness, respect,anddignity(Mark12:28-31;Luke6:31).Werepudiatehatefulandharassingwordsorbehavior aboutortowardanyoneasoutofaccordwiththeteachingsoftheBible,thecharacterofourLord,and themissionofAllSaintsAcademy.WebelievethatGodoffersredemptionandrestorationtoallwho confessandforsaketheirsin,sexualorotherwise,seekinghismercyandforgivenessthroughfaithin JesusChrist(Acts3:19–21;Rom.10:9–10;1Cor.6:9–11).

WebelievethatinordertopreserveAllSaintsAcademy’sintegrityandeffectiveness,asabiblically faithfulinstitutionofChristianeducationandasamodeltoourcommunity,itisimperativethatall personsemployedbyAllSaintsinanycapacity,orwhoserveasvolunteers,affirmandabidebythis statement(Matt 5:16;Phil 2:14–16;1Thess 5:22) Wealsoexpectstudentstoupholdthesebiblical valuesregardingsex,gender,andsexualactivityintheirspeech,dress,andconduct.

OnGender

WebelievethatGodwonderfullyandimmutablycreateseachpersonaseithermaleorfemale,bothin biologicalsexandingender Thesetwodistinct,complementarygenderstogetherreflecttheimageof God(Gen.1:26–27).“Torejectone'sbiologicalgenderisanactofrebellionagainstGod'sdesign.”*

OnMarriage

WebelievethataccordingtotheBible,marriagehasonlyoneappropriatemeaning:theunionofone manandonewomaninaholyrelationshipintendedtobeexclusiveandlifelong(Gen.2:18–25).We believethatGodintendssexualintimacytooccuronlybetweenmenandwomenjoinedinmarriage(1 Cor 6:18and7:2-5;Heb 13:4)

OnSexuality

WebelievethatparticipatinginorapprovingofanyformofsexualactivityforbiddenintheBible (includingunmarriedsex,adultery,homosexualorbisexualbehavior,andpornography)issinfuland offensivetoGod(Matt 15:18–20;Rom 1:24–32;1Cor 6:9–10)

*AllSaintsAcademyunderstandsthatduetosin,weareconfrontedwithgeneticbrokennesswhichcould includerealgenderdysphoriaandtherarecaseofachildbornintersex Bothsituations,however,donot constituteade-emphasisonthebiblicalpatternofmale/femalecomplementarity.

OnSanctityofHumanLife

WebelievethatallhumanlifeissacredandcreatedbyGodinhisimage.Humanlifeisofinestimable worthinallitsdimensions,includingpre-bornbabies,theaged,thephysicallyormentallychallenged, andeveryotherstageorconditionfromconceptionthroughnaturaldeath.Wearethereforecalledto defend,protect,andvalueallhumanlife (Ps 139) Webelievethisisthestartingpointforall discussionsrelatedtothesanctityoflife(e.g.,abortion,euthanasia,war).

STATEMENTOFFAITH

AllSaintsAcademybelievesinthefaiththatwasonce“deliveredtoallthesaints”(Jude1:3). Inthis,we believethatalldoctrineisimportant,butnotalldoctrinefunctionsinthesameway. Thereare doctrineswhichareessentialtosavingfaith(Essentialdoctrines)andtherearedoctrineswhichadorn

thegospel(Secondarydoctrines). WebelieveallChristiansoughttohaveunityinEssentialdoctrines, butcharityinSecondarydoctrines(evenwhenaccompaniedwithscrutiny).

Essentialdoctrinesarethosedoctrineswhichthechurchhastaught,believed,andconfessed throughouthistory. Essentialdoctrinesarefoundinthosestatementswhichhavehistoricallydefined basicChrsitianorthodoxy:theApostlesCreed,theNiceneCreed,theChalcedonianDefinition,and theAthanasianCreed AllSaintsAcademyisdistinctlyrootedinthehistoricProtestanttraditionwhile recognizingtheChristianidentityofthoseinotherhistoricalChristiantraditions.Webelievethat whiletheCreedsestablishtheboundariesofhistoricorthodoxy(e.g.,historicChristianidentity),the ProtestantReformationrightlysoughttheclarityandsufficiencyofthegospel–namely,thatsalvation isbyfaithalone(solafide),throughgracealone(solagratia),inChristalone(solusChristus),according toScripturealone(solascriptura),tothegloryofGodalone(soliDeogloria).

Secondarydoctrinesarethosedoctrineswhichreflectdistinctivedenominationaldifferencesin otherwisehistorically-orthodoxChristians Thesedifferencesincludeproperrecipientsofbaptism (paedobaptismorcredobaptism),expressionofspiritualgifts(continuationismorcessationism),views oftheendtimes(pre-millenialism,amillennialism,post-millenialism),etc. Thesearenotunimportant doctrinesandmaybediscussedandevenchallengedasstudentsprogressinmaturity

BasicBeliefs

● WebelievetheBibleconsistsofthe39booksoftheOldTestamentand27booksoftheNew Testament.TheBibleisGod’swrittenrevelationtoman,inspiredbytheHolySpirit,and withouterrorintheoriginalmanuscripts.TheBibleisthewordsofaninfallibleGodandis authoritativeinallmattersoffaithandpractice.
