The FPRA’s Bigbelly Smart Waste Receptacle pilot project was completed July 6–8, with all 93 new receptacles installed throughout Downtown, the River Walk, and Jetty Park. As part of the installation, 86 existing Stanley trash cans were removed, including concrete receptacles and rolling household-styletrashcansatJettyPark.
Despite working tirelessly under Florida’s intense summer heat, the installation team completed the project before schedule. During the removal of the existing receptacles, crews encountered a significant accumulationoftrashanddebrisbeneathmanyoftheoldtrashcans.The new Bigbelly receptacles feature an enclosed, solar-powered compaction system that helps contain waste, reduce litter, prevent trash from blowing into surrounding areas, and minimize access by wildlife and rodents, resultingincleanerandmoreattractivepublicspaces.
Staff will monitor the effectiveness of this pilot project to evaluate improvementsincleanliness,maintenance,andoperationalefficiency.The results will help determine the potential expansion of Bigbelly receptacles intoadditionalFPRAredevelopmentdistricts.

TheGatewaySignProjectcontinuestomoveforward,markingasignificant milestone in this long-anticipated initiative. Four Community Aesthetic Feature Agreements (CAFAs) will be presented to the FPRA Board at the June meeting for approval, allowing the project to proceed with the installationofgatewaysignsatthefollowinglocations:

Approval of these agreements will bring the project one step closer to implementationafteryearsofplanning,coordination,andFDOTpermitting. These gateway signs are intended to enhance community identity, create a stronger sense of arrival, and improve the visual appeal of key entry corridorsintotheFPRAdistrictsandtheCityofFortPierce.
