What is Mips? Mips stands for Multi-directional Impact Protection System and is a Swedish invention. In a helmet equipped with a Mips system, the outer shell and the liner are separated by a Low Friction Layer (LFL). This is a thin layer of low-friction plastic, suspended by elastic attachments. The low friction layer allows a sliding movement of 10–15 mm in all directions and is designed to help reduce rotational motion to the brain during an impact. The low friction layer sits between the EPS foam (expanded polystyrene) and the comfort padding that comes into contact with the rider’s head. If the helmet is subjected to an angled impact – which is the most common type of impact in a fall – the low friction layer allows the helmet to move slightly in relation to the head. This is intended to help reduce the risk of head trauma, such as concussion. Traditional helmets are primarily developed and tested to protect the skull against linear impacts, for example direct impacts from the side or from above.
