Looking back at 2025, we reflect on the amazing year for our BC Junior Hereford Association. We started the year with a West Coast Seeds Fundraiser and then our youth were busy prepping their cattle for many of the BC youth cattle shows. Our members started showing in April 2025 until late into the fall.
Bonanza 2025
In the summer the Alberta Junior Hereford Association put on Bonanza 2025 in Olds, Alberta at the Olds Exhibition Centre from July 21st to 26th. We had 10 youth with 13 head of cattle from across B.C. attend who did very well in all of competitions during the week. We arrived in Olds, AB by Sunday evening and settled our cattle into the tie-outs. Bonanza started on Monday with cattle processing, handing in the art, literature and photography projects and then the public speaking competition. Tuesday was opening ceremonies, judging, little league grooming and the inaugural costume class! Three of our BC juniors placed in the top ten of their age division for individual judging and advanced to the team judging competition which took place on Wednesday. Our pee wee member helped to judge the costume class along with some other mini herf and pee wee members while our province cheered from the stands. Wednesday's shows were: the bred & owned, semen donation, heifer lottery, and commercial show s We then followed the afternoon with team grooming, team judging and fun games to end the day. We were all up early on Thursday prepping for grooming and showmanship. We finished off the day with our province winning the Team Marketing competition! Our BC team also had lots of fun cooking hamburgers for the judges in the return of the Great Griller Competition. The final day of the week was the open show with a
fun supreme show! To top off an amazing week, we gathered for supper, awards and a dance on Friday evening. We all headed home on Saturday morning with lots of memories and new friendships! The week wouldn ’t have been possible without all the assistance and support from our families. Our parents were there to support our province in every way possible! Some of our BC Junior Hereford members are already planning for 2026, as Bonanza will be at the Richmond Fairgrounds in Quebec from July 20th to 25th.
2025 BCJHA Hereford Buckle Award
The BC Junior Hereford Association would like to thank you for all the entries into the first year of the BCJHA Hereford Buckle Award. BC youth had a successful year of showing Hereford and Hereford influence cattle at many shows across the province. Thank you to Richardson Ranch for sponsoring our 1st Hereford Influence Steer buckle. The winner was Tyson Thiele with his steer Mr Mime. Mr Mime was a home raised, black brockle faced steer. Tyson showed at four eligible shows this year. The runner up was Presli Schalles with her black baldie steer. Thank you to Kootenay Polled Herefords for sponsoring our 1st Registered Hereford Heifer buckle! The winner was William Dundass with CBB Shar-Lo 38G Cora 319M. Cora was purchased from Cayley Brown as a calf alongside her mother. William enjoyed showing her at four eligible shows. Runner up was Hazel Krause with PF Ms Digby RLP 37M .
Golden Opportunities
Three of our BC Junior Hereford members were fortunate to receive some funding from the Golden Opportunities education initiative. Bailey O is going to use the funding for taking an artificial insemination course and Caden F and Tyson T used the funding for the Kirk Stierwalt clinic that occurred in October at the Fraser Valley Showdown.
We are excited to have welcomed some new members into our Association this year! We are
also starting to plan for Bonanza 2027 which will be in Barriere, BC at the North Thompson Agriplex. Be sure to watch for details on the 2026 Hereford Buckle award and Bonanza 2026 in Richmond, Quebec.

West Coast Hereford Club Report
The West Coast Club held their annual MOE show at the WestGen facilities in Abbotsford again this year. The judging of the show was done in a pen format where the classes were broken down into smaller age groups with the animals off halter. The WestGen facility is a perfect venue for the event as it has many pens where exhibitors can display their cattle
An AGM was held after the show, although attendance at the meeting was down from previous years.
Murray Gore, West Coast Rep
Yellowhead Hereford Breeders’ Association Report
The Yellowhead Hereford Breeders’ held a successful show at the Lakes District Fall Fair in Burns Lake in September. Numbers were down slightly from last year but the cattle shown were excellent. Thank you to all our members who attended the show and to the Lakes District volunteers who work so hard to host this show year after year. We appreciate you! Memberships are due. Help us continue to support our Juniors and activities.

CHA Report
January 202 6
Submitted by
Michael Latimer Exec Director
As we roll into 2026, we look forward to strong cattle markets that will continue strengthening our industry and provide a strong platform for the next generation of Hereford breeders to build from. This market strength can be attributed to low cattle numbers in the primary beef producing countries around the world along with strong consumer demand for healthy natural products which includes beef. The Hereford breed remains one of the largest breeds in Canada and we are seeing a resurgence in the demand for the white face on red and black cattle. The Baldy is the most popular crossbred cow and there is only one real way to have it and that is with Hereford genetics. Initiatives such as the Heifer Select Program that we are collaborating on with other breeds will serve to strengthen the Hereford influence in the commercial cowherd.
The new Hereford Inventory Genotyping Project is now available for Canadian Hereford Members who participate in the THE program. This new initiative is available for a limited time and will allow for breeders to genomically test their complete female inventory at the reduced rate of $40 per animal. The test is our regular CHA Standard Test that includes the same add-ons, just at a lower price. The addons include parentage, genetic conditions (except MD), horned/polled, and genomically enhanced EPDs. By completing the testing on your female inventory, you will alleviate many future parentage issues as your herd will have increased pedigree accuracy and this will be an additional attribute to differentiate your program to prospective customers. The concept for this initiative was a result of a presentation on the PACE evaluation at the World Hereford Conference in Kansas City where it was shown that Canadian Herefords had a proportionately low percentage of our herd genotyped as compared to most Hereford associations around the world or other Canadian breed associations.
We took this personally and set out to develop a program that didn’t mandate additional testing through policies but encouraged additional testing through added value and price breaks. This program achieves this and within only a few days of the program being available we have had a tremendous response from several herds, both Horned and Polled. If you are interested in participating contact the CHA office for more information.
The Canadian Hereford Foundation National Select Sale that was held at the Red Coat Reception during Agribition was a success. The sale raised just over $36,000, which exceeded expectations, and on behalf of the Foundation I would like to thank the donors, buyers, service providers, sale committee members and the Saskatchewan Hereford Association for making room for the auction during their reception. The Foundation is new and is finding its way and this is a great start. The proceeds will be used for youth development and education programs that will benefit the Hereford breed and beef industry.
We are excited that this year Bonanza will be hosted in Richmond Quebec from July 21-25, 2026. The CHA Annual General Meeting will be held at Bonanza on July 24, 2026. I look forward to seeing everyone there whether you bring cattle or participate in other ways.

Canadian Junior
Hereford Assn. Review 2025
Submitted by Libby Laycraft, Breed Program Co-ordinator
The CJHA National Council had a successful year in 2025. All the regular CJHA projects were delivered on schedule and/or by year's end. We should have all invoicing complete before December 31st.
The National Council is comprised of 14 delegates from across Canada with an Executive of 4. Emma Lees (SK) served as President, Matthew Charlton (SK) as Vice-President, Sophie Liebrecht (QC) was Communications Officer and Jack Raymond (NB) was Secretary. This group did a fantastic job of leading the council throughout the year and working together with all delegates in the project teams.
Supplemental to the National Council is the CJHA Advisor group consisting of dedicated adults that are the in-province support for both the National delegates and the Provincial junior boards and associations. Kari-Lynn Turner (BC), Kim Davis (AB), Arden Charlton & Lorraine Serhienko (SK), Steven Manns (MB, Jennifer Hess (ON), Amanda Bushey (QC) and Allyson Raymond (NB) have contributed monumentally to the grass roots success of the Hereford youth program across Canada. I must say, the quality and commitment of the youth within the Hereford Community continues to impress! These young adults come to National Council at many different stages of their academic, community, professional and personal development considering their ages range between 18 and 22. It is a privilege to see them lead, learn and take the initiative to become integral parts of the CJHA and beyond.
2025 Project Review
Heifer Lottery (HL)
We had 65 breeders sign up for the 2025 Heifer Lottery Project. This represented an increase of 8 breeders from the 2024 project. This project continues to grow each year in terms of breeder participation and junior involvement. We measure junior involvement by the number of animals entered in designated HL classes at provincial events and at the Bonanza Heifer Lottery Show. We cannot track the number of juniors that are buying females from HL sales, but given most
vouchers were used last year and the increases of females that are being shown, we are confident that the project is a continued success.
The HL project runs from Bonanza to Bonanza, and the HL vouchers expire at the beginning of the following Bonanza.
In Project 2025, the National Council invested additional funds to the HL Voucher total. This allowed for $16,500 in vouchers to be disbursed across Canada including the Grand and Reserve champion prizes at Bonanza.
Bonanza
Bonanza was held in Olds, Alberta. It was a big show and the first time that the show was separated into polled and horned shows with a Supreme Class representing the Champions from the Bred & Owned, Heifer Lottery, Semen Donation and Open Polled and Open Horned shows.
There were 256 registered, including adults and family members. Junior exhibitors totalled 167 participating and 277 head entered.
The CJHA held their AGM and 2026 Executive Elections at the event.
Calendar
The 2025 Calendar project is completed, and calendars are mailed and delivered to active CHA and CJHA members.
We had 12 Full page and 71 business card ads purchased. We have capacity to sell 85 business cards, so there is work to do on reaching that target. This is the CJHA’s largest fund-raising activity.
Facebook Auction
The National Council ran a Facebook Auction held a few weeks before Agribition so that delivery of most items occurred during that event.
Semen Donation Project (SDP)
The SDP accepted female entries until Dec 15. The draw took place shortly afterwards and all the winners and breeders notified before year end.
Special Projects:
Golden Opportunities
The National Council received a donation from Golden Oak Livestock and decided to use these funds as an opportunity to lower the cost of education opportunities for CJHA members. The Golden Opportunities project was developed for this purpose as a one-off
project. CJHA members applied to access the funds and were evaluated based on merit and value to the individual’s growth in skills useful to the cattle industry. We had 6 successful candidates that will be reimbursed $333 each after completion of the educational event and submission of the required paperwork. Of interest, there were candidates that undertook A.I. courses and fitting/showmanship clinics.

§ World Hereford Conference -Young Breeder Competition (YBC)
We had two current delegates participate on the YBC teams (Emma Lees- President 2025 and Matthew Charlton- CJHA VicePresident 2025, 2026 President). The National Councils of 2024 and 2025 were involved in the discussions and development of the CHA’s decision to move forward with team sponsorship and selection.
