Did You Know This About the BCHA?

In 2025:

BC had 55 regular members who paid their Annual membership fee.

When you pay your CHA membership, you are automatically become a member of the BCHA & the BCHA receives $50 of your CHA membership fee.

Members registered 425 animals & transferred 100 animals .

BCHA receives $10 of every transfer completed.

There were 45 members on the Total Herd Enrollment (THE) program.

These members are eligible for the Genotyping Project see the CHA report on p.4. Thanks to those who are already having their herds genotyped. Please consider enrolling in THE and taking part if you haven't already.

Your BCHA received about $4000 last year from the membership and transfer fees. All of this money plus more went to donations to Juniors/4H members through support of events or award certificates. So please transfer the registered animals you sell and help us continue to support our young people.

Ads in the newsletter and our new 2027-2029 Directory and Handbook (which we will be putting together this summer & fall) help cover: advertising in publications, signs in Auction yards, promotions at events to keep marketing Herefords. Please support your Association .

Our Mark of Excellence Show will be held at the 80th Lakes District Fall Fair, Burns Lake, BC, September 11-13, 2026. Show day will be on Saturday the 12th.

BCJHA Report – Spring 2026

The BC Junior Hereford Association have had a busy and exciting start to the 2026. Juniors across the province are actively preparing cattle and gearing up for their first youth shows of the year, with a stronger Hereford presence already being seen in the barns.

One of the highlights, early this season, was Prospect 2000 in Kamloops, held at the beginning of April. It was great to see a number of Hereford and Hereford-influence cattle in the barn, along with enthusiastic junior participation. Looking ahead, many of our members are preparing to attend the Cariboo Classic in Williams Lake from June 5–7, which will be another key opportunity for juniors to showcase their projects.

Bonanza 2026 & 2027

We are excited for Bonanza 2026, which will take place July 20–25 in Richmond, Quebec. Entries will be opening soon, and our delegates are looking forward to connecting with other juniors from across the country.

At the same time, planning is already underway for Bonanza 2027, which will be hosted in Barriere, British Columbia. We are looking forward to welcoming juniors from across Canada to our province next summer.

BCJHA Fundraisers

We started the year with a successful West Coast Seeds fundraiser in January. Thank you to everyone who placed orders and good luck with your gardens this year!

We couldn’t be more grateful to work with Jayden at Ranch Life Wild Rags for a wild rag fundraiser. She did an outstanding job creating some special edition prints. Please send Delaney a message at (250) 241-5635 if you would like to order.

The BCJHA will be hosting an online Facebook auction from May 18–23, 2026. Currently, our members are collecting items to include in the sale. If you are interested in supporting the juniors through a donation, please contact Delaney Ferguson or Evan Warkentin to have your items added to the auction list. To help reduce shipping costs, our goal is to distribute as many purchased items as possible at Cariboo Classic in Williams Lake.

We greatly appreciate the continued support from our community in making this fundraiser a success.

2026 BCJHA Hereford Buckle Award

Our members are once again excited to participate in the BCJHA Hereford Buckle Award. Juniors can accumulate points at designated BC shows throughout the season toward the Top Hereford Influence Steer and the Top Registered Hereford Heifer. Entries are due by October 1, 2026.

In addition to the champion buckles, there will be runner-up awards and random draw prizes. We would like to extend a sincere thank you to our generous sponsors:

CJHA Programs

BC Hereford breeders will be hearing from Evan or Delaney soon regarding participation in the CJHA Heifer Lottery and CJHA Calendar Project. If you are a new breeder or have not previously participated in these programs and would like more information about the Heifer Lottery or advertising in the 2027 calendar, please reach out. These initiatives are important to the success of the Canadian Junior Hereford Association, and we sincerely appreciate the ongoing support from our breeders.

Cattle Markets

The cattle markets continue to break new records which is long overdue. We all watched the bull sales earlier this year smash the records that were set last year. The cattle markets continue to climb as we approach the midpoint of the year which gives optimism that there will be records set again this fall when the calves are sold. The enthusiasm in the industry hasn’t been this high for a long time. It was encouraging to see a higher number of Hereford bulls and replacement heifers being sold into the commercial cattle sector than as recent as two years ago. There has been signs of herd rebuilding, but it is projected that it will be a slow process and take several years to do so.

Hereford Inventory Genotyping Project

The new Hereford Inventory Genotyping Project (HIGP) is now available for Canadian Hereford Members who participate in the THE program. This program has been very well received by Hereford breeders across Canada. The pricing is available for a limited time and will allow breeders to genomically test at the reduced rate of $40 per animal (regular $60) when they test their complete female inventory. The test is our regular CHA Standard Test, just at a lower price. It comes with all the same add-ons which include parentage, genetic conditions (except MD), horned/polled, and genomically enhanced EPDs. By testing on your female inventory, you will alleviate many future parentage issues and take advantage of genomically enhanced EPDs. Canadian Hereford Foundation:

The Canadian Hereford Foundation’s National Select Sale is being planned once again for the Red Coat Reception this year during Agribition. We are currently in the planning stages and looking for auction items. There will be two feature lots with proceeds going toward the Keith Gilmore Foundation which has a long history of supporting Hereford youth. The proceeds of the National Select

Sale will go toward supporting existing events such as Bonanza and to supporting a youth team to compete at the 2028 World Hereford Conference in the UK. There has been strong interest in developing a youth leadership program and other Hereford based education opportunities for people of all ages which will be developed in the near future.

Annual General Meeting

We are excited that Bonanza will be hosted in Richmond Quebec from July 21-25, 2026. The CHA Annual General Meeting will be held at Bonanza on July 23, 2026 (new date). I look forward to seeing everyone there whether you bring cattle or participate in other ways, and of course we are all excited about BC hosting Bonanza 2027.

This new sale was held after the regular BC Livestock sale at the Auction yards in Williams Lake. Twenty-two bulls were consigned including 8 Herefords and 14 Angus. Prices were good and bidding was brisk. Thanks to the consigners, bidders and buyers.
