The Colorado Golf Association (CGA) and the Colorado Golf Foundation (CGF) have awarded $119,750 in grants to programs and organizations that are expected to positively impact more than 39,000 young people throughout Colorado in 2026. The annual investment reflects their ongoing commitment to making golf more accessible while creating opportunities that extend well beyond the golf course. The grants support a diverse network of organizations dedicated to youth development, player education, caddie programs and community engagement, helping introduce new participants to golf while fostering leadership, confidence and lifelong connections to the game. "Golf has the power to positively influence lives far beyond the fairways," said Ed Mate, CEO of the Colorado Golf Association. "Through our grantmaking program, we're proud to invest in organizations that are creating opportunities for young people to learn valuable life skills, build confidence and discover all that this game can offer." More than two-thirds of this year's grant funding, $83,250, was awarded to community organizations throughout Colorado, while the remaining $36,500 supports CGA programs that directly serve junior golfers and youth caddies. Collectively, the grants are projected to reach more than 39,000

participants, demonstrating meaningful statewide impact through strategic partnerships. Among the organizations and initiatives receiving support in 2026 are: • CGA Caddie Summit Club Grants, which strengthen youth caddie programs and create additional opportunities for young people to develop leadership, work ethic and life skills through caddying. • CGA Junior Player Development, expanding opportunities for aspiring competitive golfers through instruction, player development and tournament

preparation. • First Tee – Colorado Rocky Mountains, First Tee – Green Valley Ranch, First Tee Southern Colorado and First Tee Four Corners, which use golf as a vehicle to teach character, resilience and personal growth while introducing thousands of young people to the game. • Colorado PGA REACH, whose programs make golf more accessible while positively impacting youth, military veterans and diverse communities. • Gold Crown Foundation, which provides sports-based youth development programming that encourages healthy lifestyles, leadership and academic

The investments reflect a commitment to ensuring golf welcomes participants from every background. Among the projected youth served through this year's grants, 37% are girls, nearly half are under the age of 12 and the programs collectively reach communities representing a broad range of racial and ethnic backgrounds across Colorado. Community partnerships continue to represent the largest area of impact, accounting for approximately 65% of all youth served through its grantmaking efforts in 2026. "Every grant represents an investment in the future of golf and, more importantly, in the future of Colorado's young people," added Mate. "Whether a child picks up a golf club for the first time, develops into a competitive player or discovers new opportunities through caddying, these partnerships help ensure golf remains a game that changes lives for generations to come." Wellshire Golf Course Celebrates 100 Years of Golfing Legacy in 2026

In 2026, Wellshire Golf Course will mark a milestone—a full century of golf history, community, and tradition. This centennial celebration comes during a year of remarkable anniversaries: Colorado’s 150th and America’s 250th. To say this is a special year would be an understatement. Wellshire stands as one of the rare Donald Ross designs west of the Mississippi. Ross, the Scottish-born architect revered for shaping courses like The Old Course at St. Andrews and American classics such as Pinehurst No. 2 and Oakmont, brought his

genius to the West with The Broadmoor and Denver’s own Wellshire Golf Course. His signature style—natural landscapes, “turtle-back” greens, bold bunkering, and strategic fairways—has made his courses timeless, challenging, and playable for all skill levels. The story began in 1924 when Ross was commissioned to design Wellshire Country Club on the historic Skeel Family Farm. On August 28, 1926, the first nine holes opened with a celebratory tournament. A year later, the Tudor-style clubhouse—still standing today—welcomed golfers and guests. The Great Depression brought hardship, and the club closed in 1928. In 1936, the City of Denver purchased the property for $60,000, reopening it as Wellshire Golf Course—a public treasure ever since. Over the decades, Wellshire has hosted prestigious events, including the 21st USGA Amateur Public Links Champi-

Wellshire Original Clubhouse. onship in 1946 and the Denver Open in 1948, where Ben Hogan claimed his sixth consecutive tour victory with Dwight D. Eisenhower watching from the gallery. The Denver Open returned in 1958, featuring Arnold Palmer tying for third. In 1959, history was made when Bill Wright became the first African American to win a major national tournament at Wellshire during the 34th USGA Public Links.

Today, Wellshire continues its tradition with the annual Four-Ball Championship, entering its 83rd year in 2026. Back in Play: Southern Colorado Golf Course Recovers After Wildfire A fire that came within two miles forced an evacuation and left the course without water for eight days. Now the course and its surrounding community are working their way back. June began with about as much optimism as anyone at the golf course could have hoped for. Play and profits were reaching record levels, course conditions were exceptional, and mornings routinely began with a full tee sheet or preparations for another tournament. Summer had arrived in Southern Colorado, and the course was heading into its busiest time of year. Everything changed on June 29. Staff arrived at 6:30 a.m. preparing for another full day, including the final camp session for a large group of junior golfers from First Tee of Southern Colorado. A small plume of smoke was visible high on the mountain. By 8:30 a.m., it had grown into a massive cloud as the fire moved down the mountain. evacuated, some with nowhere to go. Others were fighting to protect the community, and some had lost everything. Meanwhile, the golf course sat without power, water or maintenance. Emergency briefings, evacuation orders and National Guard checkpoints became part of daily life. A property requiring constant attention was left at the mercy of the fire and elements. After eight days, a small group of department heads and managers received permission to return. They found a bone-dry course, with areas covered in ash and pieces of charred trees and vegetation. Without golfers, employees and the normal activity of summer, the familiar property felt like a ghost town. The work of saving the course began immediately. Eight days without water or maintenance can be catastrophic to turf, so staff hand-watered from fire hydrants and hauled water to the greens. As the fire became more contained and evacuation restrictions eased, the course slowly began coming back to life.

On July 11, it officially reopened. Four golfers played that day. Reopening brought new challenges. Tournaments had to be rescheduled, including the annual 2-Man Tournament, the biggest event of the season. Stage 4 water restrictions complicated maintenance, while triple-digit afternoon temperatures kept many golfers away. Making matters worse, many golfers outside the Greenhorn Valley simply didn’t realize the course was open again. Today, there are encouraging signs of recovery. The rescheduled 2-Man Tournament sold out, with additional tournaments planned into the fall, including two high school boys events featuring the Rye T-Bolts golf team. Members and longtime regulars are once again walking through the doors. There is still work ahead, but the message to golfers throughout Colorado is simple: the course survived, it is open, and tee times are available seven days a week. After coming within two miles of the flames, golf is back in Greenhorn Valley. D

Howe Inducted into Sportswomen of Colorado Hall of Fame Continuing a Legacy of Excellence On and Off the Course

Lauren Howe This year Lauren Howe added another remarkable chapter to her story at the 52nd Annual Sportswomen of Colorado Awards Celebration, held at the Hyatt Regency Denver Tech Center, where she was officially inducted into the Sportswomen of Colorado Hall of Fame. The evening’s theme, “Pace Setters: Colorado Women Leading the Way,” proved especially fitting. A three-time award winner, Howe’s career is defined by elite performance spanning dominant junior play, national amateur success, and a

sustained run on the LPGA Tour. A standout from an early age, Howe quickly established herself as one of Colorado’s top young players, winning major state titles as a teenager, including both junior and open divisions. She played No. 1 on her high school boys team and qualified for the U.S. Women’s Open at just 16, and she made the cut! Her amateur career reached a national peak in 1977 with a victory at the prestigious Women’s Western Amateur. That same year, she earned Colorado Sports Hall of Fame Woman Athlete of the Year honors, signaling her arrival as one of the top players in the country. In 1978, she won LPGA Qualifying School, becoming the youngest medalist at the time and setting a scoring record that stood for more than two decades. She went on to compete for 13 years on the LPGA Tour, earning a victory at the 1983 Mayflower Classic and recording 16 career top-10 finishes. Her 1986 season included a runner-up finish at the Mazda LPGA Championship along with multiple top-10 performances against the best players in the world. Following her playing career, Howe continued to influence the game as a respected instructor and mentor. A Colorado
