WASHING MACHINE MAINTENANCE

It is also important to clean the washing machine itself. Running an empty cleaning cycle according to the manufacturer’s instructions can remove detergent residue, mineral deposits and other buildup. Avoid using more detergent than recommended, since excess soap can leave residue on both clothing and the machine.

A washing machine is one of the hardest‑working appliances in a home, handling loads of laundry week after week. Regular maintenance can help keep it working efficiently, reduce unpleasant odors, prevent damage and extend its useful life. Fortunately, many washing machine maintenance tasks are simple and can be incorporated into your regular cleaning routine. One of the easiest ways to maintain a washing machine is to keep the door or lid open after each load, when appropriate. This allows moisture inside the drum to evaporate and helps prevent mildew and musty odors. Front‑loading machines can be particularly susceptible to moisture buildup around the door seal, so wiping the rubber gasket regularly can also help keep mold and residue from accumulating. The detergent dispenser should be cleaned periodically as well. Soap, fabric softener and other laundry products can leave behind sticky residue that may eventually interfere with proper dispensing. Remove the dispenser if possible and rinse it thoroughly with warm

Licensed

Keeping the washing machine level is another useful maintenance step. An unbalanced machine may vibrate, shake or make excessive noise during the spin cycle. Check that the appliance sits firmly on the floor and adjust the leveling feet if necessary. Finally, avoid overloading the washer. Packing too many clothes into a single load can put additional strain on the motor and other components while also preventing clothing from being cleaned properly. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for load size and cycle settings.

water. A small brush can help remove buildup from corners and openings.

Check the hoses periodically for cracks, bulges, leaks or other signs of wear. The water supply hoses are especially important because a damaged hose can eventually cause a significant leak. Make sure connections are secure, but avoid overtightening them.

A SMOOTH ROAD AHEAD A driveway probably isn’t something most homeowners think about every day—until cracks appear, potholes develop or that once-smooth surface starts looking a little worse for wear. That’s where Got Paving comes in. Serving Ellicott City and communities throughout Central Maryland, Got Paving tackles projects ranging from residential driveways to commercial parking lots and roadways. The company works throughout Howard, Carroll and Montgomery counties, bringing its paving expertise to homeowners, businesses and property managers across the region. While fresh blacktop may be the most noticeable result, there’s considerably more to paving than simply putting down asphalt. Proper preparation, grading and drainage all play important roles in creating a surface designed to handle vehicles, changing temperatures and Maryland’s unpredictable weather. Got Paving’s services include new asphalt installation, resurfacing and overlays, pothole and crack repair, sealcoating, grading and excavation. The company also handles commercial needs such as parking lot striping and ADA-compliance projects. And asphalt isn’t the only material on the menu. Got Paving also works with concrete, providing flatwork for driveways and slabs along with patios, walkways, pavers and stamped-concrete projects. For properties with long drives or a more rustic setting, chip sealing—often called tar and chip— provides another option. The company serves both residential and commercial customers, so projects can vary dramatically in size. One day’s work might involve refreshing a neighborhood driveway; another could mean resurfacing a business parking lot or tackling grading and site preparation. It may not be the flashiest home improvement, but a smooth, well-maintained driveway can make a surprisingly big difference in a property’s appearance—and make every trip home a little less bumpy. Because when it comes to potholes, cracks and crumbling pavement, sometimes the best road forward is simply a smoother one.

5 COMMON MISTAKES HOMEOWNERS MAKE REFINISHING HARDWOOD FLOORS work together to get the job done right the first time, saving homeowners added stress, time and expense. 2. Hiring a contractor at random

Hardwood floors have an enduring appeal few other flooring materials can match. Beautiful, durable and unique, each floor brings the warmth and character of natural wood into a home, creating a surface that evolves and lasts for generations. In fact, a 2026 Bona survey found that 87% of homeowners rank flooring among the home features they’re most willing to invest in. Over time, even well‑maintained hardwood floors can begin to show signs of everyday wear. Scratches, fading, worn areas or a dull finish that regular cleaning can’t address may signal that it’s time to consider refinishing. More than a cosmetic refresh, refinishing restores the floor’s appearance and protective finish, while bringing new life to the natural beauty of the wood and helping it stand up to years of use. “By refinishing floors, you’re preserving their durability and restoring their beauty, which is an investment in the long‑term value of this vital part of your home,” said Bona’s “Floor Doctor,” Zack Clavin. “You can even use Bona waterborne finishes to adjust the color and sheen of the floor while helping them wear better.” Where to start when thinking of refinishing your hardwood floors Ready to bring your worn hardwood floors back to life, but not sure where to start? You’re not alone. Bona found that nearly two‑thirds (62%) of homeowners experience at least moderate anxiety about floor refinishing projects. With autumn being an ideal time to refresh hardwood floors, Clavin shares five common refinishing mistakes homeowners make ‑ and how to avoid them. Refinishing helps preserve the durability of your hardwood floors while restoring their natural beauty, protecting an investment that can add value to your home for years to come. 1. Thinking refinishing is a DIY job

Deciding to hire a professional is just the first step. Finding the right one matters just as much. Not every contractor brings the same level of skill and expertise to a refinishing project, so Clavin recommends looking beyond a quick online search for a flooring professional with proven experience, proper training and a track record you can trust. Bona Certified Craftsmen, for example, are hand‑selected, highly skilled professionals trained in the latest refinishing techniques, giving homeowners confidence that their floors are in experienced hands from start to finish.

3. Selecting the wrong products The products used to refinish your hardwood floors can make all the difference in how they look, perform and hold up over time. Rather than selecting a stain, sealer or finish in isolation, Clavin recommends using a complete system designed to work together throughout the refinishing process. 4. Choosing the cheapest materials Selecting the least expensive refinishing option may save money upfront, but it can come at the expense of durability, and lead to refinishing again sooner than expected. Homeowners recognize that tradeoff: Bona found that 60% prioritize balancing cost and durability when making home improvement decisions, while 55% are willing to spend more upfront for long‑term quality. Investing in high‑quality products can help that investment go further. Bona’s waterborne finishes can provide durable protection for well over a decade with proper care, helping extend the time between refinishing projects. “A waterborne finish may cost more upfront, but is better for your home and the environment,” Clavin said. “The investment you put into refinishing your hardwood floors today will pay off in the long run.” 5. Forgetting about drying and cure times A refinishing project doesn’t end when the final coat goes down. Dry and cure times determine when you can safely walk on your floors, move furniture back and return to everyday life. On top of that, temperature, humidity and the type of finish can all impact timing, which is one reason fall’s typically the best season to refinish floors.

You can find countless TikTok and YouTube videos on how to refinish your floors, but this is one home improvement project where going the DIY route can quickly become a costly mistake. Improper sanding, uneven stain application or rushing drying times can lead to disappointing results that take even more time and money to correct.

The products you choose can also make a significant difference. Oil‑modified and acid‑cured finishes can take two to three times longer to dry and cure than waterborne options. Bona Traffic HD, for example, dries within two to three hours before floors can be walked on in socks and fully cures in just three days, helping homeowners get back to enjoying their space sooner.

For your floor refinishing project, work with a trained flooring professional who understands the precision and craftsmanship it requires, as well as how the right products and techniques

Understanding these timelines upfront can help you plan around furniture, family, pets and guests while giving the floor time to properly cure.

CHILDREN’S CORNER

Halloween is one of the most exciting nights of the year for children and families. Costumes, decorations, candy, parties, and trick‑or‑treating make it a memorable tradition, but a little preparation can help everyone enjoy the holiday safely. From choosing the right costume to staying visible while walking through the neighborhood, simple precautions can prevent many common Halloween accidents. One of the most important Halloween safety considerations is visibility. Many children will be walking around after dark, when it can be difficult for drivers to see pedestrians. Choose costumes that are bright and easy to see, and consider adding reflective tape or reflective accessories. Children can also carry flashlights or glow sticks to help illuminate their path. Parents and adults should remind children to stay on sidewalks whenever possible and to cross streets at designated crosswalks. Costumes should also be comfortable and practical. Avoid clothing that is so long that a child could trip over it, and make sure masks do not interfere with vision. Face paint can be a good alternative to a mask as long as products are intended for use on the skin. Props such as swords, knives, or other accessories should be soft, flexible, and age appropriate. Children should be able to walk, see, and move comfortably while wearing their costumes. Drivers have an important role in Halloween safety as well. Motorists should slow down and remain especially alert in residential neighborhoods. Children may be excited and distracted, and they can unexpectedly move into the street. Drivers should watch carefully for pedestrians, especially at intersections, driveways, and areas with heavy trick‑or‑treating

Rt.108 Monthly Advertiser

Before children head out for trick‑or‑treating, establish some basic ground rules. Younger children should always be accompanied by a responsible adult. Older children who are allowed to go with friends should have a planned route and a specific time to return home. Make sure they understand not to enter strangers’ homes or vehicles and to stay with their group. A charged cell phone can also provide an additional way to communicate if plans change or an unexpected situation occurs. Candy safety is another important part of Halloween. Children are often eager to dig into their treats as soon as they return home, but it is best to have an adult inspect the candy first. Throw away anything that appears opened, damaged, or suspicious. Children with food allergies should be particularly careful about checking labels and avoiding treats that may contain allergens. Parents can also set aside safe alternatives for children with dietary restrictions. Homeowners should take precautions if they are welcoming trick‑or‑treaters. Keep walkways, steps, and porches clear of decorations, cords, toys, and other objects that could create a tripping hazard. Outdoor areas should be adequately lit. Candles and open flames should be kept away from costumes, paper decorations, and other flammable materials. Battery‑powered lights can provide a safer alternative for many Halloween decorations. Pets need attention on Halloween, too. Constant doorbell ringing, unfamiliar visitors, and unusual costumes can make even friendly pets anxious or frightened. Keeping pets in a quiet, secure room during peak trick‑or‑treating hours can help prevent them from escaping or reacting unexpectedly to visitors. With a little planning, Halloween can be both exciting and safe. Bright costumes, careful street habits, responsible supervision, safe decorations, and a quick candy inspection can go a long way toward protecting children and families. Taking a few extra minutes to prepare allows everyone to focus on what Halloween is really about: having fun, making memories, and enjoying the community together.

A SECOND LIFE FOR GREAT FINDS There’s a certain satisfaction that comes with finding something no one else has. A colorful piece of glassware, a perfectly worn-in jacket or a quirky piece of décor can have a personality— and a history—all its own. At Twin Thrift Vintage, that sense of discovery is part of the fun. Twin sisters Jordan Virden Menefee and Ali Virden Mitchell turned their shared enthusiasm for thrifting, vintage style and design into a business in 2020, initially selling their finds online. Four years later, they opened Big TTV, their first brick-and-mortar shop inside the Shops at Westwood on Triadelphia Road in Ellicott City. Since then, the business has grown beyond its current 350-square-foot space. Big TTV has outgrown Westwood and will be moving on at the end of 2026 and the sisters will share more about the next chapter in 2027. Until then, the shop remains open, regularly restocked and full of the colorful, unexpected finds customers have come to know. Rather than the traditional thrift-store experience, the sisters take a curated approach. Their everchanging collection brings together vintage home décor, glassware, barware, clothing, accessories, small furniture and unexpected treasures spanning a variety of decades and styles. Mid-Century Modern might share space with Art Deco, Grandmillennial favorites and nostalgic finds from the ’80s and ’90s. And that’s exactly what makes vintage shopping interesting: there’s no guarantee of what will be waiting. With new pieces arriving regularly, a visit can feel a little like a treasure hunt. Something overlooked by one shopper may be exactly what another has been searching for—a reminder that style doesn’t necessarily have an expiration date. There’s an environmental benefit, too. Choosing vintage keeps usable furniture, clothing and household goods in circulation while giving shoppers an alternative to mass-produced décor and fast fashion. What was once someone else’s possession gets another opportunity to be appreciated. For the sisters behind Twin Thrift Vintage, it’s about finding interesting pieces and connecting them with people who will enjoy them next. And perhaps that’s the real appeal of vintage: the best things don’t always have to be new—they just need someone new to love them.

Clarksville has a history that stretches back well before its modern suburban development. The community takes its name from William Clark, an early landowner in the area. For much of its history, Clarksville was a rural farming community, with farms, country roads, and large properties shaping the landscape. Over time, the area evolved as Howard County grew, but Clarksville has retained many reminders of its agricultural past. One of Clarksville’s most appealing features is its natural setting. The area is surrounded by rolling hills, wooded landscapes, streams, and parks, providing opportunities for residents to enjoy the outdoors. Nearby parks and recreational areas offer places for walking, exercising, playing sports, and spending time with family. The community’s proximity to the Middle Patuxent Environmental Area also gives residents access to protected natural surroundings and trails. Built in 1893 in response to the need for a school within walking distance of farms located in the Little Bennett Creek Valley, the Kingsley Schoolhouse served the local, rural farming community until it closed in 1935. Each year, around 20 children ranging in age from 6‑12 years old attended the school. Since the immediate area was known locally as Froggy Hollow, due to the large number of frogs that could be heard peeping in the low‑lying area, the school acquired the nickname of Froggy Hollow School.
